[Eddie Moore plays The Hey Hay Club at J. Rieger & Co. Brewery, 2700 Guinotte Ave, KCMO, on Thursday, August 31. 7:00 to 10:00 PM.]

[The original Hey Hay Club was located in downtown KC at 4th & Cherry. It lasted for 7 years, 1931 – 1938, but in that time it played host to jazz musicians the likes of Count Basie, Lester Young, and countless others. True to its name, patrons sat on real hay bales (which were later used to feed livestock) and the stages were made of old hay wagons. // The Hey Hay Club was owned and operated by Milton Morris, a well-known entrepreneur and saloon owner throughout the 1930’s. Milton went on to own several other taverns such as The Novelty Club and Milton’s Tap Room, as referenced in Pee Wee Hunt’s recording, “Meet Me Tonight At Milton’s.” // In 1996, filmmaker Robert Altman memorialized the Hey Hay Club in his film, Kansas City. He changed the spelling slightly for his fictionalized version, and our sign at the entrance is the movie prop used in the film. “The Hey! Hey! Club” is our tribute to KC’s rebellious past, weaving another vital element of iconic KC history into the J. Rieger & Co. story.]

  1. Katy Guillen & The Drive – “Batallas (feat. Mireya Ramos)”
from: ANOTHER ONE GAINED (DELUXE)) / Katy Guillen / August 4, 2023
[From http://www.glidemagazine.com: Upon its August 19, 2022 release, Katy Guillen & The Drive’s debut album, Another One Gained, was met with critical praise, with Uncut Magazine noting that they “hit the sweet spot with a mix of spiky garage rock and soulful country torch songs.” As lauded by Under the Radar Magazine, the duo evokes a “simple and timeless indie rock sound carried by Guillen’s chugging guitar and [Stephanie] Williams’ driving drums, yet they also show off effortless instrumental chemistry, locking into an easygoing groove that gives both members a chance to shine.” Since its release the band has toured on the record across the country and shows no signs of slowing down. // 2023 will see them playing club dates and festivals, including Mile of Music, Boulevardia, and Treeline, in support of their summer release of a deluxe edition of the album. Another One Gained Deluxe features three previously unreleased songs, including “Batallas,” the highly anticipated remixed Spanish version of the bands’ fan-favorite “Battles.” Spotlighting special guest Latin Grammy-winner Mireya Ramos (Flor De Toloache) on violin and backing vocals, Guillen and Williams stripped away select layers of the original recording and tracked a rewritten Spanish vocal, as well as a rich array of percussive elements like palmas, timpani, cajon, and claves. An abiding rallying cry to never succumb to the darkness; “No dejes que te controle. No dejes que te traiga abajo. (Don’t let it rule you. No, don’t let it pull you down.),” “Batallas” takes the listener on an adventurous and vulnerable journey, culminating in a triumphant and stirring violin solo by Ramos. Another One Gained Deluxe will be released digitally on August 4th. // Today Glide is premiering the previously unreleased track “Batallas,” which finds the group offering up a remixed version of their tune “Battles.” With the kind of triumphant guitar and orchestration that would make Jimmy Page Smile, the song is a dramatic work of pop-laden rock that showcases the sheer power that this group can produce. We get intricately suspenseful violin, sonically expansive orchestration, and heavy guitar work that balances the sinister with triumphant to make for a song that feels like a true journey. // What is the story behind this song? How did you come to write it? What is it about? Katy Guillen: The original English version of the song came together in the middle of the pandemic when we weren’t able to tour or perform live, so we spent our time at home writing and working on demos. The song sprouted from a flamenco guitar flourish I was playing around on, and Steph noted that the time signature of the flourish was in seven. We jammed on it for a while, and the other sections came together over time. Sidenote – we’d gotten really into recording split screen video songs during the thick of covid and covered Pink Floyd’s “Money,” and it really got us interested in writing our own song in seven. “Battles” is a song about staying strong through the dark, slow days of the pandemic, as it was a massive mental and emotional challenge for both of us, like it was for so many. The rewritten Spanish lyrics express this same message. // This is a Spanish language version of a previous song of yours. What made you want to record the song in Spanish? Besides the obvious language difference, what else do you feel is different about this version? Katie Guillen: I’ve always wanted to record a song in Spanish. I’m half Mexican – my dad is from Cuernavaca, Mexico – and have been wanting to explore this side of my heritage through my music for years, but for some reason I felt too intimidated to try. This song felt right for my first attempt since it was born out of a flamenco guitar riff and lyrically reflected the mental hurdle I faced when I thought about writing and releasing my first Spanish song. In high school, I loved listening to Latino rock bands like Mana, Juanes, and Shakira’s first record (“Donde Estan Los Ladrones?” was a favorite.). I also became very passionate about flamenco guitar around that time and loved to study and play the style. It has since worked its way into my songwriting and electric guitar playing. My mom was my Spanish teacher for three years in school, so I was fortunate to have her guidance during the rewriting of “Batallas.” It was great to work on a song with her and feel things come full circle since she introduced me to so much of the Latino music I listened to growing up; she used music to teach the language, which I always thought was so unique and effective. The seeds for Spanish to work its way into my music have been there for years, so in a sense it’s been a long time coming. // Katie Guillen: This version is very unique because we were able to have an amazing special guest – Mireya Ramos tracked background vocals and violin, which added a whole new energy to the song and really amplified the mood. On top of that, we tracked a lot of fun, extra percussion like palmas, cajon, timpani, and claves. The musical landscape is very adventurous on this version! // Are there any lyric lines that you are particularly proud of or that really speak to you? What do you feel makes them resonate? Ktie Guillen: The lines that resonate most with me are the chorus lines because I think they help provide a more triumphant and positive overall feel to the song. Since the music is fairly intense, I like that the final message is to stay strong in the face of uncertainty and darkness – “No dejes que te controle / No dejes que te traiga abajo.”// If listeners can take away one thing from having heard this song, what do you hope that is? Katie Guillen: I hope people are able to take away strength and a feeling of being reinvigorated. I’d love for the listener to simply feel something from the musical elements, or relate to a line of the lyrics in their own personal way. // How does this song fit in among the others on the album? How is it similar or different? Katie Guillen: The song fits with the album’s overall theme of change, growth, and starting new chapters. It also fits with the themes of mental health and pulling the positives from a negative situation. The core of “Batallas” was originally tracked in the same session as the rest of the album, so the vibe, mood, and energy feel similar. We recorded the additional tracks in Kansas City to add to the original session, as well as adding Mireya’s strings and vocals. This is the only song on the album that features a special guest collaboration. // The album is a deluxe edition of a past release. What made you want to give this album the deluxe edition treatment? Katie Guillen: We wanted to share the extra songs that we’d recorded during the original recording session, as well as take the opportunity to try something new and long-awaited with the Spanish remix of “Battles.” We’re an independent band, so we poured everything we had into “Another One Gained,” and we just felt like we wanted to give it one more little boost into the world since we had more music to share from that time and felt so proud of what we created.]Produced by Kevin Ratterman (My Morning Jacket, Heartless Bastards, Ray LaMontagne) at Invisible Creature Studio in Los Angeles. This is brimming with vibrant textures, fuzzy electric guitars, and warm vocals. “Set In Stone” marked the beginning of a major life transition for Katy Guillen (pronounced Ghee-En). Written shortly after her longtime band announced their final show, she was struggling to find the next step in her career and personal life, while longing for a past sense of stability. “The song’s vigorous structure and deliberate rhythms convey that feeling of defeat and darkness, but with a sense of resolution and surrender through the guitar solo – a favorite moment on the record for me,” explains Katy. “While it started on shaky ground, coming out on the other side meant starting over and building something new.”] [ANOTHER ONE GAINED is a memoir of growth and reawakening by way of heart-wrenching transition and change – loss of her long-time band, end of a romantic relationship and finding herself amidst it all. “Set In Stone” premiered earlier on Guitar Girl Magazine. Katy Guillen & The Drive – Katy Gillen (drums) and Stephanie William (drums) – dropped their first EP, Dream Girl, right before the 2020 lockdown, leaving them without opportunities to perform live. In their basement rehearsal space, they spent the year learning home recording and pre-production techniques, gradually crafting a collection of songs from the ground up. The following April, they took the demos to producer/engineer Kevin Ratterman (My Morning Jacket, Heartless Bastards, Ray LaMontagne) at Invisible Creature Studio in Los Angeles. From their work with Ratterman emerged a batch of 15 songs. At the end of 2021, the band released the four-track Battles EP, offering listeners a darker, more simmering edge to their impelling indie-rock sound. Ten more would comprise Another One Gained, the full-length debut due August 19, 2022. Previously Katy Guillen & The Drive released BATTLES EP on December 17, 2021, Recorded at Invisible Creature Studio in Los Angeles, CA. Engineered and mixed by Kevin Ratterman. Produced by Kevin Ratterman, Katy Guillen, and Stephanie Williams. Mastered by Shelley Anderson at Black Lab Mastering in Louisville, KY. All songs written by Katy Guillen and Stephanie Williams. Katy Guillen on vocals, guitar, bass, & keyboarda. Stephanie Williams on drums & percussion. Additional keys and programming by Kevin Ratterman. Album design and photography by Morgan Jones. This is a follow up to Katy Guillen & The Drive’s 7-song EP, DREAM GIRL, released March 20, 2020. Katy Guillen & The Drive, is a project dedicated to Guillen’s songwriting that is founded on the creative spark and chemistry between Katy Guillen & Stephanie Williams. With Guillen on guitar & vocals and Williams on drums, the two sculpt a sound that recalls bands like Led Zeppelin, The Bangles, and Band of Skulls. In 2012, Guillen & Williams formed Katy Guillen and The Girls, and began to build a foundation of touring and recording that carried them through six years and produced three full-length albums: Katy Guillen & the Girls, Heavy Days, and Remember What You Knew Before. Between 2012 and 2018, they traveled the United States extensively, performed at the International Montreal Jazz Festival, toured Sweden, and supported major acts like The Doobie Brothers, Robin Trower, and Heartless Bastards. In these 6 years playing together, Guillen & Williams created a dynamic, sound informed by Guillen’s mesmerizing, emotive guitar style and poignant arrangements, and an equally captivating live show that showcased Williams’ technical, melodic style, resulting in a powerful on-stage chemistry. In addition to the compelling synergy formed by years of playing together, the two developed a method of working together on Guillen’s songs that only deepened their artistic connection, propelling them to forge a path to a new plateau in their music. KG & The Drive push ahead with a melodic, heavy, and soulful sound while maintaining the edge of the artist’s rock ‘n’ roll and blues roots. Katy Guillen & The Drive opened for FANNY for their one-night-only reunion concert from Fanny+ (June Millington, Brie Howard-Darling, Patti Quatro, and Mia Huggins) at recordBar, on October 5, 2022. http://www.katyguillenmusic.com]

Nicolette Paige is owner and founder of Soul Child Awakenings. Soul Child Awakenings is a holistic healing business, practice, and way of life for the mind, body, and soul. Soul Child Awakenings focuses on empowering clients spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, and even financially by assisting them on their journey to self-mastery through indigenous spiritual practices, the use of earth medicines, and the scientific teachings of how these practices work. Soul Child Awakenings began its development in 2008, when I professionally started offering tarot readings and began my studies on African Spiritual Sciences. Since I was a child, I have always had the spiritual gift of healing and communicating with the spirit realm. Through all of my services I utilize these gifts to help guide others in discovering their own personal power and finding healing, peace, and purpose in their life. There are several core spiritual practices I often incorporate into my services: Curanderismo, Rastafari, Hoodoo, Vodou, and the religious practices of Ifa. In 2020 I was initiated into the Ifa religion, a way of life where other religions such as Vodou, Lucumi, and Candomble originate from. When I was initiated, I was given my spiritual name, ”Larada Didan Imoleina Aye Balewa”, meaning, “She Whose Healing Shines Light On The World”. Although I am initiated into Ifa and am influenced by other indigenous spiritual practices, the path I walk is led by the wisdom of my ancestors and the light and love that resides in my soul.

The name, “Soul Child Awakenings”, comes from a few profound revelations in my life. Throughout my teenage years I always knew I was a soul living a human experience that had the ability to tap into infinite knowledge and wisdom; I knew that learning new things would be an everlasting journey. I always believed in a higher power, and felt my soul was an extension or child of this higher power. To show my gratitude for this knowing, I began referring to myself as “Soul Child” and even got the name tattooed on my neck. The word, “Awakenings”, comes from the many awakenings one can experience in their life. One of the most important awakenings I believe one must have to attain true happiness is the awakening of their inner child, or what I like to call, their inner soul child. Awakening our inner soul child helps us to heal wounds and learn from our past, it helps us to remember the simple joys in life that many forget as adults, and most importantly, it helps us to live purposefully.

[Chris Hazelton – Hammond B-3 Organ, Brett Jackson – Baritone Saxophone, Jamie Anderson – Guitar, John Kizilarmut – Drums, Pat Conway – Congas. Executive Producer: Cory Weeds. Produced by Chris Hazelton. Recorded at Weights & Measures Soundlab (Kansas City, MO) on February 19th & 20th, 2022. Engineered and mixed by Duane Trower. Mastered by Adam Boose at Cauliflower Audio. Photography by Cory Weeds. // On his Bandcamp page Chris writes: “Dark (noun): a: a place or time of little or no light (ex: night, nightfall) b: absence of light. // I’ve always been somewhat of a night owl. I suppose it comes with the territory of being a jazz musician. We feel at home in dimly lit, hazy settings during the wee small hours of the morning. Something about nighttime has always been enchanting to me. There are endless possibilities, and one never knows what could happen before daybreak. // Towards the end of 2021, however, I found myself in a state of darkness that was truly unfamiliar to me. Like every other musician, the pandemic had brought my career to a grinding halt in the previous year. It seemed like losses were becoming a pattern and grief was becoming more than I could bear. At times, I even questioned whether I still WAS a musician. As the beginning of 2022 approached, I was faced with the reality that three of my greatest musical mentors had passed on, and I suddenly felt a new weight of responsibility for carrying on the tradition of the Hammond B-3 Organ in jazz. Consequently, I found a fresh sense of purpose and inspiration. // So with no real game plan in place, I booked a weekend in the studio and hired friends that I knew could deliver the feeling I was looking for. I have always had an affinity for the sound of a baritone sax in front of the organ trio. Going all the way back to George Benson’s first two albums with Ronnie Cuber and Lonnie Smith, as well as recent releases by my friends Adam Scone and Ian Hendrickson-Smith, the format has a certain grit and heaviness not found in other configurations within the jazz realm. // After dark, there is magic and mystique waiting… and maybe even some true darkness… but AFTER dark, there is always light! // from http://www.chrishazelton.com: Some things in life are just meant to be. The first time Chris Hazelton experienced a real Hammond B-3 organ, he knew instantly that it was the instrument he was destined to play. At the request of his college professor, the then-underage aspiring musician snuck into a dark Kansas City jazz club called Bobby’s Hangout to hear the man behind the console, jazz organ master Everette DeVan. After several weeks of coaxing, Mr. DeVan agreed to take Chris on a student, showing him the ins and outs of the complex machine. With a background in string bass and piano, Chris’ transfer to organ was a natural one. // From 2007 to 2009, Chris called the Big Apple home. New York City provided an education that can only be found by living there. The rhythm of the city and the constant presence of jazz royalty helped sharpen his playing into a potent combination of groove and artistry. During his time there, Chris regularly performed at legendary Harlem jazz clubs such as Minton’s Playhouse, the Lenox Lounge, and Showman’s Jazz Lounge. In 2009, Chris had the honor of studying with the world’s foremost authority in the jazz organ world, Dr. Lonnie Smith! // Upon returning to his native Kansas City, Chris has made a name for himself as one of the premier jazz organists in the midwest and recently made an appearance with the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. // His flagship ensemble, Chris Hazelton’s Boogaloo 7, was assembled in 2013 and held a impressive seven-year Friday night residency at Kansas City’s Green Lady Lounge. This seven piece unit focuses on funky, rhythmic soul-jazz that harkens back to the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, a time when Lou Donaldson, Jimmy McGriff, Charles Earland, Grant Green, Lonnie Smith, and a host of others packed dance floors and venues along the “Chitlin Circuit”. The Boogaloo 7 has released two 45rpm 7-inch vinyl singles and two full-length LPs on Sunflower Soul Records, a label established by Hazelton in 2014 that produces soulful recordings with unashamedly old-school, analog vibe. // For nearly 10 years, Chris served as the organist at “The Historic” Centennial United Methodist Church in the 18th & Vine Jazz District of Kansas City, MO – a church that was once home to Count Basie and Charlie Parker. He plays bass guitar with the popular soul ensemble The Freedom Affair. He is happily married to the love of his life, Erica, and together have a daughter named Evelyn and a son named Jaxon..]

  1. Jaclyn Bell – “Run This Town”
from: “Run This Town” – Single / Jaclyn Bell / January 18, 2023
[Kansas City based singer songwriter Jaclyn Bell. Jaclyn released her first full-length album, “Wanna Be Mine” on March 28, 2019, recorded here in Kansas City. Jaclyn Bell released her EP “Memories” in 2018, that featured her songwriting capabilities combined with the Nashville talent where it was recorded. Jaclyn Bell has been in music her whole life. From singing competitions in things like 4H when she was younger, to singing in churches, and singing background vocals on a few albums. She has been writing songs ever since I was in my teens. She attended a music recording internship with Josh and we got a lot of really good experience from everything to song composition to audio engineering. During the lockdowns she added being a vocal for hire to my portfolio. She was working with a lot of DJ’s and producers in Europe and being featured on quite a few of their singles. Jaclyn has known most of the guys in her band for most of her life and has been playing music with all of them in different capacities for over ten years! Jaclyn loves songwriting and doing this with the most amazing musicians she knows. http://www.jaclynbellmusic.com]
