[Cayucas is Zach Yudin and his twin brother Ben Yudin on bass. Cayucas: Pronounced “ky-yook-us”, is the monikered homage to a sleepy little seaside town in San Luis Obispo County, California. That town, Cayucos, has hardly changed in the last 50 years, a far cry from the gentrified tourist traps parading showily down the nearby coastline. In the early 1960s, the surfing craze hit. There was one bar around which local kids congregated back then, the site of helpless crushes and fights and games of pool, a place whose jukebox soundtracked innumerable teenage years as breezy summers rolled into mild winters and back around again. The bar has since disappeared, but as Zach Yudin, the man behind the name, will tell you, the place still holds on tight to its propensity for dreamy, lazy, bonfire-lit nights worth getting moony-eyed about.]

3. Morrissey – “Wedding Bell Blues”

[Morrissey’s new covers album, his 18th solo studio album has him “putting his own spin on classics by Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Jobriath, and Laura Nyro. The golden state has become Morrissey’s adopted home and he’s made some great California friends to join him on the new record. For the 12-track effort, Morrissey enlisted contributions from a handful of special guests, including Ed Droste of Grizzly Bear, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, and Broken Social Scene member Ariel Engle. Additionally, Petra Haden, Sameer Gadhia of Young the Giant, and LP appear. Roy Orbison, Jr has already given the cover of his dad’s song the seal of approval “We love Morrissey! Morrissey’s hair, and melancholy and poetic lyrics always reminded me of my Dad. His version of “It’s Over” is great.” The album was produced by Joe Chiccarelli. Steven Patrick Morrissey was born May 22, 1959, and is professionally known as Morrissey, is an English singer, songwriter and author. He rose to prominence as the lead singer of the indie rock band the Smiths, which was active from 1982 to 1987. Since then, Morrissey has had a solo career, making the top ten of the UK Singles Chart on ten occasions. Born in Davyhulme, Lancashire, to a working-class Irish family, Morrissey grew up in Manchester. As a child he developed a love of literature, kitchen sink realism and popular music. Involved in Manchester’s punk rock scene during the late 1970s, he fronted the Nosebleeds, with little success. Beginning a career in music journalism, he authored a number of books on music and film in the early 1980s. With Johnny Marr he established the Smiths in 1982, soon attracting national recognition for their self-titled debut album. As the band’s frontman, Morrissey attracted attention both for his witty and sardonic lyrics and his idiosyncratic appearance; deliberately avoiding rock machismo, he cultivated the aesthetic of a social outsider who eschewed drugs and embraced celibacy. He was also noted for his unusual baritone vocal style (though he sometimes uses falsetto). The Smiths released 5 further albums – including the critically acclaimed Meat is Murder and The Queen is Dead – and a string of hit singles. Personal differences between Morrissey and Marr resulted in the Smiths’ separation in 1987. Since The Smiths disbanded in 1987.]

4. Middle Kids – “Real Thing”

[Middle Kids are an alternative indie rock band from Sydney, Australia led by lead singer/guitarist Hannah Joy and her husband, Tim Fitz. Drummer Harry Day fills out the trio. They have released one self-titled EP and an album entitled ‘Lost Friends’, released in Australia on EMI, and Domino Records in the US. They have performed as openers for Ryan Adams, Bloc Party, Cold War Kids and their 2017 tour stops at LouFest, Austin City Limits Fest among others.]

5. Amyl and The Sniffers – “Got You”

[Debut album from Melbourne, Australia based, 4-piece punk band fronted by singer Amy Taylor who explains of the song, “‘Got You’ is about that feeling you get when you first start seeing someone and you’re excited to see them, no matter what shit they got. You just see them at the pub and it feels like the most exciting thing in the world, like you’re so lucky they’re even there. It’s definitely one of the “sweetest” songs on the album, and less punky. It was kind of inspired by Split Enz.”]

Betse Ellis is originally from Fayetteville, Arkansas. She received her Bachelors of Arts in Music and a Bachelors of Arts in English, from the University of Missouri – Kansas City. She has been playing the Violin for over 40 years, with over 20 years playing fiddle and also working as a teacher of music. Betse was one of the founding members of the critically acclaimed and internationally known band, The Wilders. Betse has released two solo records, and for the last several years is recording and performing with her partner, multi-instrumentalist Clarke Wyatt, as Betse & Clarke.

Clarke Wyatt is a finger-style banjo player, drawing inspiration from great traditional and inventive banjoists of earlier decades such as Mike Seeger & John Hartford. His melodies match the fiddle, and also build rhythmic interest to embrace the music’s character. He also plays finger-style guitar, when it suits the musical style & texture.

Betse Ellis joins us to share details about a new project she is involved with as part of the Short Round Stringband! The 5-piece band is in the process of releasing a new 14-track Tribute To Bill Monroe record. They’re also releasing a new video of the song we just heard, “Rocky Road Blues” TODAY! Inspiration – Short Round Stringband is a band born of friendship, inspiration, and passion for our musical heroes. Our very first concert together was a tribute to the great John Hartford, an artist who inspired each of us in our musical journeys. When we get together, we listen to music, we examine music, we debate music, and we participate in musical evolution as we pay homage to our heroes and add our own dose of Short Round Stringband to the music they created and perpetuated.

In all this milieu of musical traditions, we didn’t count Bill Monroe as a direct hero for our band. We appreciated his musical contributions to bluegrass, early country, and hillbilly music. We knew the music he played evolved from the musical traditions he experienced from the people around him. We knew he had a knack for innovation and we knew that perhaps his greatest contribution was leading a new generation of musicians to innovate for themselves.

As an old-time band, we don’t think of ourselves as playing bluegrass music (even though those lines are often so blurry). So, as we sat in the campground at Bill Monroe’s Music Park in Bean Blossom, IN in the spring of 2017, we laughed and laughed when Clarke “Wildcard” Wyatt said, “You know what we should do? We should record a Bill Monroe tribute album.” As this idea took root, we started to realize how much Monroe’s innovation had trickled down to our individual styles and even band approach.

We headed into the project thinking what we would produce would be so different from Bill Monroe’s own music: an old-time band covering the father of bluegrass. And it was different. And then it wasn’t. In the end, we did just what we think Bill Monroe would have wanted us to do: we followed his lead and then we made it our own. We hope that somewhere out there, Bill’s just shaking his head, smiling knowingly and saying, “That ain’t no part of nothin’.”

Intention – As artists, we often feel compelled to produce music, not so much because we NEED to, but because we HAVE to. We have these songs, these stories, that we are driven to tell, to perpetuate, to share. For the sharing of these stories and songs to be meaningful, we rely on the people that want to hear them, the people that are willing to enter into a musical partnership with us. This partnership is as old as time. This partnership makes art happen. It makes art significant and relevant.

Tribute to Bill Monroe, “Ain’t No Part of Nothin’ – Earlier this year, the band recorded 14 tracks of their favorite Bill Monroe songs and tunes complete with banjos, fiddles, guitars, mandolin, upright bass, two-part harmonies, three-part harmonies, four-part harmonies, sad songs, happy tunes, and a gospel number or two.

With support, the band will be able to finish the mixing and mastering of the album tracks, hire a graphic designer to design the packaging, pay licensing fees so the estate of Bill Monroe gets its due, and pay to have the album manufactured. Also, as a companion to this album, we’ll have our very first Short Round Stringband comic zine.

An Old Time Session: Betse & Clarke – with “Ampersand” Brett Hodges – have a nearly limitless catalogue of old time, bluegrass, and early country music, which they perform with an easy sense of being in the moment. These three have developed an intuitive approach to presenting music they love, and this will be their first time to share their music at The Ship.

Betse & Clarke take an audience on a musical field trip. Betse Ellis plays powerful and beautiful old time fiddle tunes, sings traditional Ozark songs, and shares her own songs with themes relating to human experience. Expect her to tell some stories along the way, featuring personal moments with her fiddle mentor Violet Hensley. Long known for her energetic style in her former band The Wilders, Betse’s earned a level of maturity while maintaining her contagious enthusiasm. 7. HuDost – “Rise Together”

[8th studio album from Husband-wife-fronted retro-pop art-rock group HUDOST recently partnered with STEREO EMBERS to premiere “Rise Together,” the lead single from their forthcoming full-length album OF WATER + MERCY (due April 05, 2019). The song features an anthemic chorus and finds HUDOST’s Moksha Sommer and Jemal Wade co-writing with Jars of Clay lead vocalist Dan Haseltine. Additionally, all the Jars of Clay band members were involved on the single—which was recorded at Grey Matters Studio in Nashville, TN, and mixed by Vance Powell (Jack White/White Stripes, Pearl Jam, Brandi Carlile).]

The music of HuDost weaves a seamless tapestry of Folk, World, and Rock that renders tears and laughter in listeners, cultivating the nameless longing that abides somewhere in all our hearts and invoking total celebration. HuDost’s core musicians are Moksha Sommer, from Montréal, and Jemal Wade Hines from Kentucky. Having toured the U.S., Canada, and Europe constantly since April 2006, HuDost has grown and expanded, travelled rocky and glorious terrain and marveled at all they can learn and explore. Moksha and Jemal Wade in this time have grown as artists, as seekers, as a couple and as a family. “We met Dan Haseltine of Jars of Clay not through music but through our shared work in political advocacy acting on behalf of people living in extreme poverty,” says Moksha Sommer. “Through music and advocacy we have witnessed incredible and real change and know the astonishing power of collective voices on behalf of those who do not have the ability, and sometimes even the rights, to be heard. Songwriting with Dan was a wonderful process of the three of us contributing all that we could and being attached to nothing. I think the result is quite remarkable and reflects the very thing the song is about; rising together through shared vision and action.”

Throughout the eight tracks on OF WATER + MERCY–the eighth full-length studio album from HUDOST–there’s a rich, eclectic blending of pop and rock with a sound that crosses all borders and barriers, taking the listener on a journey.

[Founded in 1990 by Mike McCoy who grew up in Hutchinson, Kansas. Cher U.K. filled venues in Kansas City playing punk rock music. Mike McCoy, now lives in Austin Texas and fronts his band Mike McCoy’s Trompe-l’œil. Mike is the founder of The North vs. South Music Festival. Cher UK reunited to play the Middle of the Map Festival in April 2012. While in KC Mike McCoy gathered up several musicians to record a new Cher UK EP. Mike McCoy Guitar & Vox, Mark Reynolds – Bass, Bernie Dugan – Drums. Mike McCoy grew up in Hutchinson, Kansas. In the early 1990s his band Cher U.K. filled venues in Kansas City with their their music playing with popular themes in punk rock music. Mike McCoy, now lives in Austin Texas and plays in his band Mike McCoy’s Trompe-l’œil. Mike has also played in the bands The Service Industry and The American People.

Amy Farrand plays over a dozen instruments, bass, drums, lap steel, guitar, she has hosted variety shows, and radio shows, and has been a a member of the bands: American Catastrophe, Experimental Instrument Orchestra, Shotgun Idols, Sister Mary Rotten Crotch, Atlantic Fadeout, The Silver Maggies. One reviewer wrote of her, “Amy Farrand is a tough-as-nails vocalist making her an invaluable asset to any live act.” Last year Amy’s band Amy Farrand & The Like released their 11-song debut album in April and were nominated for a Pitch “Best of Kansas City” Award.

Garrett Nordstrom is one of the founding members of the critically acclaimed band Maria The Mexican, where he plays guitar. Garrett grew up in Saint Joseph, Missouri and studied political science at Missouri Western University. Garrett serves on the Board of Directors for Midwest Music Foundation, where he is treasurer of the board.

Mikes new band is called: Mike McCoy’s Trompe-l’œil

Mike talked about how impressed he was with Brianne’s bravery in light of her health issues, and how musicians help each other in times of need. He also talked about his love for the KC Music community.

Mike told us that there would be 5 different drummers playing with Cher UK and the only way audiences could know who’ll be playing in Cher UK is to support this fundraiser.

The last time Cher UK played in Kansas City the band consisted of: Mike McCoy Guitar & Vox, Mark Reynolds – Bass, Bernie Dugan – Drums

The band was originally called Cher. You released many of your first recordings on cassette, the band went through several line-up changes and the band’s name changed to Cher UK and got a record deal with Red Decible Records from Minneapolis.

In 2004 Mike founded the North vs. South Music Festival, as a bi-annual, bi-polar music festival designed to showcase independent rock along the I-35 corridor.

The last time Amy Farrand was with us in the radio was the day you opened for Melissa Etheridge at Crossroads KC.

Amy Farrand and The Like includes: Amy Farrand on lead vocals & guitar, Steve Tubbert on bass, Felix Dukes on drums, Kyle Dahlquist on keyboards & backing vocals, Stephan Jean-Francois on trumpet, and Katie Gilchrist on backing vocals.

One was recorded with Duane Trower at Weights and Measures Soundlab.

Amy Farrand is a true veteran of the KC music communities, playing in band since the 1980s early 1990s.

Amy listed some of the bands that Brianne has been a part of including: Never Ready, Main Street Saints, No Man’s Band, Fifteen Minutes Fast, and Sugar Britches.

[Momma’s Boy, is an Indie Surf Pop 4-piece band from KCMO, formed December 2015, and made up of former members of Rev Gusto: Peter Beatty on guitar & vocals, Shaun Crowley on guitar & vocals, Quinn Hernandez on drums, and Jared Bajkowski on bass & vocals. Their debut EP Liquid Courage was released February 25, 2017. Self-recorded in the Momma’s Boy band practice attic. Mixed by Jared Bajkowski, and mastered by Ross Brown. This track was released as part of a series of singles the band has put out over the year. including “Want Me Back” released January 19, 2018 (part of Dead Summer Single Series), and “Asleep On The Floor” on October 12, 2018 (part of Demo Singles Series).]

11:35 – Interview with Shaun Crowley & Patrick Keizer

Shaun Crowley is a classically trained guitarist, and has studied at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory. Shaun is part of the band Momma’s Boy and is a co-founder of Manor Records, a music label that grew out of Manor Fest, the first festival sized “house show” Shaun and friends produced in their basement featuring 12 bands. Shaun is also organizing the live music at Voltaire, 1617 Genessee, in the West Bottoms.

Patrick Keizer is from Lawrence, Kansas. He graduated from Blue Valley North High School and studied Special Education at University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. He joined us on Wednesday MidDay Medley Josiah Hunter, Davy Langerak, and Bennett Jones on August 23, 2017 when his band at that time, Shortsweather was on the eve of playing Crossroads Music Fest. Shortsweather ended and Patrick is now in the band Mild Cats on guitar & vocals & keyboards, with Christina Silvius on viola, Wade Conyers on bass, Quinn Hernandez on drums, and Josiah Hunter on guitar.

15. Alice Merton – “Funny Business”

[Born on September 13, 1993 in Frankfurt, Germany to a German mother and a British father. Merton’s family moved frequently due to her father’s job as a mining consultant. When she was three months old, Merton moved to Connecticut. Shortly thereafter, they relocated to Oakville, Ontario, Canada where she was raised until the age of thirteen, learning classical piano and singing. Her family then relocated to Munich. Merton’s return to Germany prompted her to learn German which enabled her to speak with her German grandmother whom she had only seen once annually growing up. While in Germany, Merton wrote her first song and attended a German-language high school before graduating and moving to England. Merton moved frequently in her early life, living in Oakville, Ontario, Connecticut, New York, Munich, Bournemouth, London, and Berlin, among other cities. Through her upbringing, Merton has stated she has felt connected to Canada, England, Germany, and France where her mother lived. In 2013, she started her studies at the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg in Mannheim, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in composition and song writing, and met the members of her future band.]
