Guest Producer – Major Matt Mason USA

We welcome back to the show, Major Matt Mason USA as our special “Guest Producer.” Major Matt Mason USA is the performing name for musician, writer, and producer Matt Roth. Originally from Shawnee, Kansas, Matt is a member of the bands Schwervon!, Broken Heart Syndrome, and Kansas State Flower. In 1994 Matt moved to New York City where he became active in the anti-folk and DIY music scene of New York’s East Village. Centering around the infamous Monday night, open mic, Antihoots at the Sidewalk Cafe, the scene was an early stomping ground for an array of artists including Beck, Regina Spektor, Kimya Dawson, The Moldy Peaches, Langhorne Slim, John S. Hall (King Missile), Jeffrey Lewis, and many more.

   [Al-Qasar is an Arabian fuzz band with a vision that’s brazenly electric and deeply connected to its roots. The band was started in the Barbès neighborhood of Paris by producer Thomas Attar Bellier. The musicians came together, from France, Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, and the United States. Earlier on July 20, 2020 Major Matt Mason USA released the single “Victims Of The Storm.” Major Matt Mason USA is the performing name for musician, poet, and producer Matt Roth. Originally from Shawnee, Kansas, Matt cut his teeth playing guitar for local Lawrence, KS freak out and math rock bands Magic Nose and Dracomagnet in the early 1990s. // In 1994 Matt moved to New York City where he became active in the anti-folk and DIY music scene of New York’s East Village. Centering around the infamous Monday night, open mic, Antihoots at the Sidewalk Cafe, the scene was an early stomping ground for an array of artists including Beck, Regina Spektor, The Moldy Peaches, Langhorne Slim, John S. Hall (King Missile), Jeffrey Lewis, Shilpa Ray, Kimya Dawson, Diane Cluck, and many more. // In 1998 MMM released his debut solo album Me Me Me in the US. The album was licensed for the UK and Europe on Teenage Fanclub drummer Francis MacDonald’s label, Shoeshine Records. He would continue to release two more albums with Shoeshine: 2002’s Honey Are you Ready for the Ballet and 2004’s Bad People Rule The World. In 2005 Matt released a one-off project under the moniker of Kansas State Flower and in 2007 he returned as Major Matt Mason USA with the album Senile Pie Strive Pip Melancholy. // In 2001 he formed the band Schwervon! with Nan Turner. Schwervon! would go on to release five albums and a handful of singles, including a 7” on, Pavement member, Bob Nastanovich’s label Broker’s Tip Records. // During his time in New York, he established Olive Juice Music, a recording studio, independent record label, and online record distro headquartered in his apartment in the Lower East Side. Olive Juice Music would go on to host the OJ All Day Music Fest, for three years, as well as the OJ Distro, a hub for over three hundred independent releases in the early days of online mailorder. OJ Studios has produced recordings for many notable artists including: Kimya Dawson, Daniel Johnston, Jeffrey Louis, Adam Green (Moldy Peaches), Toby Goodshank, The Lovely Eggs, L.D. Beghtol (Magnetic Fields), Dan Fishback, Paleface, Phoebe Kreutz, Elastic No No Band and more. // In 2012 Matt moved back to Shawnee, Kansas and re-inserted himself into the Kansas City Music/ Poetry Scene. In 2015 he started a poetry blog entitled Beef Jerky Clouds and in 2017 formed a side project, Broken Heart Syndrome, featuring Pat Tomek of The Rainmakers on drums. // [Major Matt Mason USA continues to perform as a solo act and as a band. Through his combined projects he has shared the stage, opening, for luminaries such as Belle and Sebastian, Guided By Voices, Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), The Vaselines, The Wedding Present, Daniel Johnston, Lucy Dacus and many more. // As of the fall of 2019 Major Matt Mason USA has been performing with Brian Hurtgen on drums and more recently Dane Bridges on Bass. 5. Hello Mary – “Sink In”

   [Hello Mary is new band from Brooklyn NY. Stella Branstool the drummer is the daughter of Christy Davis who played drums for me in a project I did in NY called Kansas State Flower. They’re getting a lot of attention and have already opened for bands like Luna and are slated to to do a tour opening for the band Bully. ]

6. El Shirota – “Tibio (feat. Alo)”
   from: Niebla (3-track) EP / Devil in the Woods / February 18, 2022
   [El Shirota were formed in 2013 in a suburb of Mexico City. The Guitar-heavy quartet calls on the influence of ’90s alt-rock songwriting and high-volume shoegaze production, resulting in a sound that quickly turns from dreamy textures to noisy chaos.]

   [Skull Snaps was an enigmatic funk group active between 1963 and 1973. The group is known for their mysterious origins and the anonymity of their members, with the identities of their members being unknown for most of their career and long afterward.The album contains drum breaks that have been sampled numerous times on various hip hop records.Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Das EFX, DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, Eric B. & Rakim, Digable Planets, DJ Shadow, Stabbing Westward, the Prodigy, Panjabi MC, Suprême NTM, Linkin Park and others.]

8. Orgone – “Wicked Karma”
   from: Lost Knights / 3 Palm Records / May 27, 2022
   [Orgone is an American band from Los Angeles, California. The group’s sound draws from 1960s and 1970s-era funk and soul. While several members of the band played together from the early 1990s, Orgone did not coalesce into a regular band until around 1999. Many of their early gigs were as a backing band for hip-hop musicians. After a 2001 debut release, the band added vocalist Fanny Franklin to do a cover of “Funky Nassau” by the Beginning of the End; she remained as a full-time member, although much of their music is instrumental. The group released its second album The Killion Floor in 2007,[3] which featured “Funky Nassau” as well as covers of “Do Your Thing” by Isaac Hayes and “I Get Lifted” by Harry Wayne Casey of K.C. and the Sunshine Band. In 2010 the band opened for Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings on tour. They have also performed at festivals like Bonnaroo and New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.]

9. Lady Wray – “Through It All”

   [Lady Wray’s 2022 album Piece Of Me is one of my favorite releases for the year. Incredible vintage, sounding heartfelt R&B/ Soul music. With modernized takes on classic love songs. / Virginia-born singer/songwriter Nicole Wray has everything you’d want in a singer: an infectious Jackson-5-family-member flare, a range like Aretha’s, and a church upbringing that’s brought a pure, healing texture to her voice.]

10. The Dip – “Real Contender”
    from: Sticking With It / Dualtone Music Group / March 4, 2022
    [The Dip is another new old sounding R&B band made up of University of Washington in Seattle music school grads. I love this album for the melodies and the old soul sounds of longing.]

11. Theon Cross – “Epistrophy”

    [Theon Cross is a London based jazz tuba player who is taking that very marginalized instrument to all sorts of new heights. He’s also a member of one of my favorite new Jazz ensembles, Son’s of Kemet, led by sax player Shabaka Hutchins.]

13. Ibibio Sound Machine – “Protection From Evil”

    [Ibibio Sound Machine is an English electronic afro-funk band from London. Formed in 2013, the band currently consists of vocalist Eno Williams. Their latest album Electricity was produced by English syth pop collaboration Hot Chip.The name of the band itself finds influence from Eno Williams’ Nigerian mother, whose native tongue was Ibibio.]

14. Kevin Morby – “This is a Photograph”

    [KC’s own Kevin Morby’s latest albums explores the city of Memphis as a metaphor for a certain kind of under appreciated American city. The album was also inspired by a box of photos he found at his fathers home in Kansas while visiting him during a health crisis. // Kevin Morby’s 7th album. From http://www.rollingstone.com: “In January 2020, songwriter Kevin Morby witnessed his father collapse from a medical event while visiting his childhood home in Kansas. In a state of shock, the singer spent the evening looking at old family photos and fixated on an image of his father as a young man, looking, as Morby states, ‘full of confidence.’ The experience forced Morby to confront both the idea of mortality and the passage of time — and, after an extended sojourn in Tennessee, these reflections came together in the form of his upcoming album, This Is a Photograph. To mark the announcement, the singer released the record’s eponymous single, accompanied by a music video directed by Chantal Anderson. Produced by frequent Morby collaborator Sam Cohen, This Is a Photograph was primarily written in Memphis’ historic Peabody Hotel, where the singer-songwriter holed up in search of inspiration and self-realization amongst the city’s dark past.” Morby will also embark on a 65 City tour of Europe and North America through the majority of 2022, which starts May 20 in Madrid, Spain and wraps Nov. 12 in Vancouver, BC. On Oct 16, 2020 Kevin Morby released SUNDOWNER, ranked #20 on WMM’s 120 Best recordings of 2020 and was the 6th release from Kevin Robert Morby born April 2, 1988. SUNDOWNER was the follow up to his 2019 release OH MY GOD. Kevin Morby released CITY MUSIC in 2017. Kevin learned to play guitar when he was 10. In his teens he formed the band Creepy Aliens. 17-year-old Morby dropped out of Blue Valley Northwest High School, got his GED, and moved from his native Kansas City to Brooklyn in the mid-2000s, supporting himself by working bike delivery and café jobs. He later joined the noise-folk group Woods on bass. While living in Brooklyn, he became close friends and roommates with Cassie Ramone of the punk trio Vivian Girls, and the two formed a side project together called The Babies, who released albums in 2011 & 2012. He began a solo career in 2013 releasing his debut album HARLEM RIVER. His 2nd album STILL LIFE was released in 2014. SINGING SAW was in WMM’s 116 Best Recordings of 2016. His album CITY MUSIC was in WMM’s The 118 Best Recordings of 2018.]

15. Aldous Harding – “Lawn”

    [Aldous Harding is New Zealand based singer songwriter. He Lyrics are brilliantly expressive and surreal. Her minimalist Indie rock 2022 album Warm Chris is one of my favorites of the year. // Hannah Sian Topp was born in 1990. She is known professionally as Aldous Harding, is based in Cardiff, Wales. // Topp comes from a musical family in Lyttelton, New Zealand: her mother is folk singer Lorina Harding. One of the first musicians who came across her was New Zealand folk-pop singer/songwriter Anika Moa. Moa asked Harding to play support for her that night after finding her busking outside the venue she was about to play at. // She has released music through independent record labels Flying Nun, Spunk, and 4AD. She has collaborated with Marlon Williams, John Parish, Mike Hadreas and Fenne Lily. // 4AD announced Harding as a new signing in early 2017 just prior to the release of her second album, Party. Party was nominated for IMPALA’s European Album of the Year Award. Singer-songwriter Aldous Harding, released Designer is the third studio album on April 26, 2019 by 4AD. The song “The Barrel” won the 2019 APRA Silver Scroll award. // As of 2020, she is based in Cardiff, Wales, where she had previously lived with partner and collaborator H. Hawkline.]

16. Toro Y Moi – “The Loop”

    [Chaz Bear (born Chazwick Bradley Bundick; November 7, 1986), known professionally as Toro y Moi, is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, and graphic designer. He is often recognized as a spearhead of the chillwave genre in the 2010s, alongside contemporaries Washed Out and Neon Indian, although his music has explored various styles since. His stage name is a multilingual expression consisting of the Spanish words toro and y (meaning “bull” and “and”, respectively) and the French word moi (meaning “me”).]

    [Lou Barlow is the bass for Dinosaur Jr. as well as half of the indie rock band Sebadoh. His latest album Reason To Live was written and recorded in his home during covid. He has a very amusing Instagram where he reflects upon what its like for a touring musician to be held up in his house with his wife and preschool aged daughter.]

    [Nan Turner is a KC based singer songwriter and half of the band Schwervon!. Her five song EP was released in 2019. // All songs by Nan Turner. Ian Dobyns plays drums and Chase Horseman plays bass. Nan Turner is one half of the critically acclaimed band Schwervon! Nan has been called the “Lucy Ricardo of Indie Rock.” She also performs as Nan & The One Night Stands. Nan wrote on Facebook about her new EP: “This whole thing started out as an experiment, but I have to say I’m proud as hell with how it turned out. I was just going to record one or maybe two songs. HA HA Welcome to my FIVE SONGER!!! Some songs were written out of heartbreak and some just made me laugh. Just doing this was transformative…stuff was moving around, it was cathartic. I allowed myself to “write bad songs”. I highly recommend doing that because there’s bound to be a gold nugget somewhere in the bunch if you give yourself permission. Me and my guitar got reacquainted. We were “dancing in the dark.” I’ve never quoted Bruce Springsteen before,. but also I didn’t know I was going to record this EP, so you know. I’m rolling with shit. I had the luxury of working with Chase Horseman every week or two…giving myself ample time to add/rework stuff. I took the slow road and enjoyed the process. Chase has great ears and is uber talented in his own right.
