[Formed in Lawrence, Kansas in 1997 by Josh Berwanger, James David, Christian Jankowski, Adrianne Verhoeven and Justin Roelofs. The Anniversary was the solidification of a line-up that had been in flux for a year. After two years of playing shows across with the Midwest with bands that included The Get Up Kids, Braid and Superchunk, The Anniversary signed to Vagrant Records. Originally perceived as a poppy, keyboard-driven emo band with the release of their debut album Designing a Nervous Breakdown in 2000, they developed a stronger, classic rock-influenced sound with the release of a split CD with Superdrag in 2001 and their second full length, 2002’s Your Majesty. After touring heavily throughout 2002 and 2003, The Anniversary began demoing tracks for what would be their third full length. But four years of constant touring and personal strains within the group led to the band’s demise in early 2004.

“CONCERT AGAINST CAMPUS CARRY” at Liberty Hall in Lawrence, Kansas, on September 25, 2016, at 7:30 PM is Part of National “Concert Across America” Against Gun Violence

On Sunday, September 25, 2016, Kansans Against Campus Carry will be hosting a “Concert Against Campus Carry” at Liberty Hall in Lawrence. This concert is a kickoff to our statewide campaign to prevent “campus carry” (the conceal carry of firearms on public college and university campuses in Kansas) from coming into effect, as scheduled, on July 1, 2017.

This concert is also part of a national Concert Across America to End Gun Violence on that same day, which is the Congressionally designated day of Remembrance of Murder Victims. There are over 600 concert events scheduled, and you can see them (and ours) listed at concertacrossamerica.org.

The Lawrence Concert Against Campus Carry is intended to raise awareness of the issue of campus carry, and of our campaign against it. It is also a benefit concert, with proceeds to go for the #failcampuscarry efforts throughout the state.

The concert will feature three musical performers:

Victor & Penny—since 2010, this ukulele-and-guitar duo have been delighting audiences nationally with their deft blend of originals, hot jazz and offbeat pop standards. V&P infuse their music with a strong sense of swing rooted in the riff-driven style of Kansas City jazz to create their own distinctive style.

Barclay Martin Ensemble— A blend of singer/songwriter folk, pop, and world music, Barclay Martin’s songs are a celebration of culture that could only come through traveling the world. Through his love of music and the gift of travel, Martin realized the role that music has to play in celebrating work that uplifts us all. Music can serve as photographs of who we are as people—it can also serve as a reminder of how connected we are.

Minimal Animal—Minimal Animal is a local Lawrence band with a strong student following. Folksy, bluesy, indie rock rich with harmonies – their music is familiar enough to feel comfortable but with enough turns to keep the listener engaged.
