   [From Spoon’s bandcamp page: Lucifer on the Moon is the anti-gravity companion to Spoon’s LUCIFER ON THE SOFA. (Feb. 11, 2022). A top-to-bottom rework of the Austin band’s tenth album, it was created by On-U Sound founder and UK dub icon, Adrian Sherwood. // Moon first took shape as a few heady remixes for the singles from LUCIFER ON THE SOFA. Frontman Britt Daniel offered Sherwood two suggestions: “Avoid things that would not be possible on tape” and “Add whatever you want to add, the less modern the better.” The collaboration shouldn’t come as a surprise: dub-inspired production is wound through Spoon’s classic tracks, from “Finer Feelings” to “Inside Out.” Sherwood is a proven collaborator whose resume includes partnerships with seminal artists like The Fall, Jah Wobble, and Mark Stewart. The initial results pleased both parties and Sherwood was invited to work on additional songs. And then a few more. “I got into the melody and the thoughts it evoked in me,” the producer explains. “It just evolved and we eventually found ourselves with a whole album.” // Moon flips Lucifer on the Sofa’s rhythm tracks inside-out, and often rebuilds them wholesale. Sherwood supplied extensive additional instrumentation via On-U’s extended family of session players, including bassist Doug Wimbish and drummer Keith LeBlanc (both of whom performed in Sugarhill Records’ early ’80s in-house rhythm section). He dug deep into the album’s multi-tracks, surfacing forgotten details and elements not present in the final album mixes. The result airlifts Spoon’s trademark melodies into lush alien terrain, replete with vibrant echo and rumbling low-end. “It wasn’t just a thing where you pick apart this and that and you stay on the grid and you add a delay,” explains Daniel. “He added so much more instrumentation to the tracks that they became different completely versions of the songs. Not just remixes, but companion pieces. A ‘Part II.’”]

Colin Halliburton writes: “Hot Dice is a self-deprecating exploration of my tendency to ruin otherwise joyful moments with polarizing political conversation pieces or fatalistic and rambling soliloquies. By the end of the song, I learn to be less of a vibe killer and just tell “a gross joke instead”. Musically, it’s jangly heartland folk-rock that’s been elevated with super chorus-y guitar, great multiple harmony bgvs, and an altered arrangement toward the end of the song that really makes it shine. Obviously I’m biased. In terms of its release, I couldn’t let an entire calendar year go by without releasing some new jams into the world so we’re closing out 2022 with a couple stand alone singles we’re extremely proud of. This is Birdies’ second full-length album release of 2022. On May 27, 2022 Birdie’s released the 8-song album WHY DO YOU HAVE TO BE SO COOL?. Power pop, punk, and echoes of the girl groups of our time intersect in Kansas City-based band Birdie. This energetic collaboration of local talent brings a fresh take on classic sounds. EXOTICAFREEJAZZMIDDLEASTERN is a mix between free jazz group (Annie Ellicot vocals, Mark Southerland Sax, Clarke Wyatt Grand Piano, Arny Young Drums) and Extoica Band (Amado Espinoza- Charango, Tina Billberry- Violin, Chris Fugitt- drums, Mark Southerland-Sax, Chris Tady- Guitar). With guest artists: Mike Dillon-Vibraphone, Beau Bledsoe- Guitar and Oud, Christine Brebes- violin. It’s a masterpiece that finishes the GAV7D album collection in the most beautiful and bizarre way combining new sonic concepts with ancient. He likes to say he’d rather do this than compose a symphony as it relates more to his bass musical life. The first album is vocals 15 songs composed by Johnny or collaborated with 27 different KC music scene vocalists. Then the idea was to re-imagine what the album would sound like with different group of V7 musicians. Johnny has always written for his band Mr. Marco’s V7. Many of the early members of the band moved back into town so it was on. The first album Cartoonoirjazz is a instrumental homage to Mancini, Ellington, Mingus, and Monk. Features Johnny’s great composing of Jazz melodies and improvisations with his amazIng band members. The second lineup is Punkfunkpolka which is like if a 90s alternative rock band was driven by accordions and theremins. The third version of the band is Exoticamiddleasternfreejazz and is an homage to Martin Deny, Sun Ra, and oud music. It is a magic romp of both improvisations and compositions. Then we have the solo bass video game music album. This album is both electric and upright playing and is breaking new ground for what the bass can do. An. homage to all the great sound tracks of video game music as well as just Johnny’s unique voice on the instrument. // KC based musician, composer, and teacher Johnny Hamil plays in the band Pamper The Madman. Johnny Hamil also plays bass for Mikal Shapiro, and Julia Othmer, and can be heard on the recordings of many KC and Lawrence based artists including Stephonne Singelton. Johnny Hamil collaborates with jazz combos, theatre productions, and is also known for his work with The Malachy Papers. As a teacher of the bass, Johnny Hamil was recently featured on Queer Eye on Netflix. Johnny is a founding member of Mr. Marco’s V7, a band that has been reinvented with each new release, changed and evolved with different line-ups. Known for experimental, instrumental music, Johnny told us the music he composes for the band came to him in his dreams. In 2011 the bassist noticed something revolutionary for his creative process when his dreams included lyrics for the first time This set him on a new path to create GAV7D, which is not Mr. Marco’s V7 proper, but members from the long history of the the band. The concept was to collaborate a vocal version of the compositions with friends and then have various lineups of the V7 family interpret the material in different ways, CartoonNoirJazz, PunkFunkPolka, and FreeeExoticaMiddleEastern. GAV7D premiered at the Folk Alliance International. Sondra Freeman is Director of Promotions & Artist Relations for Midwest Music Foundation, a nonprofit created to support music and musicians in Kansas City and the surrounding areas, founded in 2008 by a collective of musicians and music lovers. The Midwest Music Foundation (MMF) unites and empowers the greater KC music community by providing programs and resources to area musicians through outreach, support, education, and health care opportunities. Sondra is instrumental in MMF’s annual events: Apocalypse Meow, MidCoast Takeover and the MidCoast Takeover fundraiser shows, and other collaborative musical events and fundraisers.

The Midwest Music Foundation is proud to present the 15th Annual Apocalypse Meow.

The history of Apocalypse Meow started in 2008, when local musician Abigail Henderson faced daunting financial hurdles after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Friends and fellow musicians rallied to her side, holding the first Apocalypse Meow concert to cover her medical expenses. To pay this forward to her local community, Abigail co-founded MMF. After she passed away in 2013, MMF established Abby’s Fund For Musicians’ Health Care, which has given out over $350,000 in health care assistance grants to musicians. We have also provided much needed preventative care services through our health clinic events and partnerships with local providers. // The Rock Docs will be on site from 6 to 10 pm with free flu shots, screenings, health care and insurance information. This live event will also feature an online auction from local vendors and artists, and lots of fun raising money to support the health of the music industry members of Kansas City.

The event features live performances by notable Kansas City-area bands as a donation of their time and talents to their community; local businesses and artisans donate products and services to the event for auction. All monies raised during Apocalypse Meow go directly to Abby’s Fund for Musician’s Health Care and the production costs of Apocalypse Meow. Performances, business donations, and services are purely voluntary.

Abby’s Fund for Musicians’ Health Care was named for Abigail Henderson (1977-2013).

Death Notice from St. Louis Post Dispatch: Abigail Hope Henderson the Kansas City vocalist who started a nonprofit organization to help musicians pay health-care costs, died on Tuesday, August 27, 2013 of cancer at her home. She was 35. For more than a decade, Abigail was the lead singler of several area bands: Trouble Junction, The Gaslights, Atlantic Fadeout, and Tiny Horse. In 2008 she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had health insurance, but the cost of the treatments prompted her and husband Christopher Meck, to start the Midwest Music Foundation which raised funds to help area musicians pay health care costs. “Medical bills can throw you into poverty in a week – in one day,” she said. “There’s nothing like standing in your kitchen opening a hospital bill for $63,000.00 in one day and $47,000.00 the next. After a while you don’t want to open them anymore. Who can pay that?”

Rhonda Lyne is Executive Director of Midwest Music Foundation. She is a scientist by day and avid supporter of the arts by night. Rhonda has had an active role with the MMF since the inaugural fundraiser, Apocalypse Meow, in 2008. Inspired by MMF founder, Abigail Henderson, Rhonda is dedicated to the mission of the MMF a nonprofit created to support music & musicians in KC and the surrounding areas, founded in 2008 by a collective of musicians & music lovers. Rhonda is instrumental in MMF’s fundraising, volunteer, event coordination, overseeing the health care fund, and day to day activities of the organization.

When your favorite Kansas City dance company decides to collaborate with your favorite Kansas City band, the result is one of the most moving, beautiful, and important works of art created in Kansas City this year! Xavier Martin and Jade Green prove why they are proud recipients of the 2022 Charlotte Street Generative Performing Artist Award Fellows. And they make it look and sound so good. These are two of the hardest working artists in Kansas City, and they are both incredibly unassuming and human in their journey. Their music continues to tell the story of the world we are living in with social and political lyrics delivered by two young, incredibly gifted musical artists, who mirror each other so very beautifully. There is no equivalent to this band. The Black Creatures are a true original. The Owen/Cox Dance Company has brought their music to new levels with Christian A. The Black Creatures recently were the recipients of the Charlotte Street Foundation 2022 Generative Performing Artist Fellowship Grant and Award.

The Black Creatures are a multifaceted music duo from Kansas City. Gleefully playing with elements of soul, hip-hop, and EDM, they’re here to tell inter-dimensional stories – through all-original, lyric-heavy songs and live performances. They share real stories from a less-explored perspective, while others are spun from fantastical vantage points. Influenced by neo-soul sirens like Erykah Badu and Alicia Keys, wordsmiths like Da Brat and Tech N9ne, and composers a la Daft Punk and Robert Glasper, they make music that defies genre and tradition in an effort to break generational curses. The idea is that society’s hexes, long bound up by the threads of anti-black repression, insincerity, and envy, can be uncrossed by doing what has not been done before. They aim to honor the past, celebrate the present, and transcend the expectations of the future by creating consistently unique songs, videos, images, and interactive live performances.

Jade Green performs with: Arquesta Del SolSoul. a Kansas City-based music collective featuring 3 musicians who worked together in Hearts of Darkness. They call themselves: African Futurist Genre Killerz from the Middle of the Map bringing an innovative multidimensional sound inspired by our founding musical ancestors to decolonize and time bend indigenous sounds of the Caribbean, Latin America, West, Central, and Southern Africa.” Members include Les Izmore, Jessica Ayala, Brad Williams, Jade Green, Chalis O’Neal, Irving Graham, Ernest Melton, Andres Ramirez, Fabian Prado.

Second, CONGRATULATIONS on the publishing of your brand new book of poetry THE WEIGHT OF RECOGNITION published by Spartan Press in September 2022.

THE WEIGHT OF RECOGNITION contains 60 of her poems and has forewords by Missouri Poet Laureate Maryfrances Wagner and Kansas Poet Laureate Huascar Medina, among others. “I am really, really honored by this,” she says. “I never expected something like this to happen.”

Boyd stopped writing temporarily in 2021, when she learned she had a serious heart condition that would require open-heart surgery. “I used to write almost every day,” she says, “but last year was such a strange journey for me. I started giving things away; I stopped writing. Ultimately, I made peace with things.”

Recently, however, Boyd found out that her heart functionality has gone from 20% to 55% and she will not need a transplant after all. “I believe in prayer and healing and good support,” she said.

Boyd grew up in South Kansas City, the youngest of three sisters, with one younger brother who died years ago. Although both Boyd’s parents were children of Mexican immigrants, she did not grow up speaking Spanish, nor knowing much about her ancestral culture. Determined to change that, she made it a point that her daughter Whitney learn Spanish and become immersed in such customs as Mexican folkloric dance, which she learned to perform professionally.

The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art presented a Day of The Dead Festival, over the weekend and has a Day of The Dead Altar Installation in Kirkwood Hall, on view through November 7, 2022. Miguel Morales is a award winning poet and journalist who grew up in Texas working as a migrant and seasonal farmworker. He is a Lambda Literary Fellow, a member of the Macondo Writers Workshop, and a VONA/Voices alum, and The Latino Writers Collective. Miguel is the winner of the Society of Professional Journalists’ First Amendment Award. Miguel is one of the editors and contributors to: Fat & Queer: An Anthology of Queer and Trans Bodies and Lives. Miguel has also bravely worked as an activist for equality.

Your Miguelito adores you and on this soon-to-be national holiday, I just wanted to send you the most sincere blessings and mostly good wishes.

You are a terrific friend & I recognize the value of our friendship more & more each year.

I thank you for all the times you had me on your show, more times than I can remember and probably more times than I deserve.

Our on the air conversations are real and they mirror our real-life conversations – except without all the cussing and the delicious tacos.

Your work as an artist and as an art-letic supporter knows no bounds. You’ve touched many in our community, at least that’s the rumor.

You’re always so generous with your time. You’re not the kind of artist who keeps opportunities to themselves, you share them with others letting them know where and how to apply. You have an understanding of an artist’s work, and you connect them with people and organizations that can offer resources and other opportunities. You see partnerships and make them happen.

I’m also grateful for the work we do with the migrant farmworker students in Waverly, Missouri. It’s a project we’ve been doing for probably 10-15 years. It’s a cause that’s dear to my heart and I’m so happy that we do it together.

Our friendship is effortless, and honest, and like no other.

I say all these things because I love you, I respect you, and I know that if I don’t give you credit, you’ll cut me. She’ll do it, dear listeners, I swear she will.

Whitney Boyd is an elementary education teacher, she also helps rescue dogs for Chain of Hope. Whitney is the daughter of Maria Vasquez Boyd and the mother of Maria’s two-year old grand daughter Luna. Whitney is in the classroom right now, but she pre-recorded a special message, for her mom.
