10:15 – Interview with Robert Gibby Brand & Michael Reiser

Robert Gibby Brand & Michael Reiser for Spinning Tree Theatre's production of Amadeus (May 4, 2016 on Wednesday MidDay Medley)

Robert Gibby Brand & Michael Reiser for Spinning Tree Theatre’s production of Amadeus (May 4, 2016 on Wednesday MidDay Medley)

Kansas City based actor, Michael Reiser is making his professional theatre debut, in the role of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, for Spinning Tree Theatre‘s production of Amadeus, by Peter Shaffer. This Tony Award-winning play, which became an Oscar-winning movie, opened last weekend and is running Wednesdays through Sundays, through May 15, at The Arts Asylum, 1000 East 9th Street, (9th and Harrison), Kansas City, Missouri.

Joining us is Michael Reiser who plays Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Michael recently returned to KC after completing his BFA in Acting at Missouri State University.

Also with us is acclaimed actor, Robert Gibby Brand who plays, Antonio Salieri in the play, Amadeus. He was recently seen in “A Soldier’s Tale” with Owen/Cox Dance Ensemble, and in “The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail” for Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre. He has worked at the Kansas City Repertory Theatre, The Unicorn, The Coterie, Heart of America Shakespeare Festival, Bach Aria Soloists, The KC Public Library, The Lyric Opera, Quality Hill Playhouse and New Theatre Restaurant. And will be seen in I Do, I Do at the Chestnut Fine Arts Theatre and in The Pirates of Penzance at the Lyric Opera of KC.

Robert Gibby Brand, was with us, in August 2014, to discuss “Ghost-Writer,” with Spinning Tree, and now he is in the celebrated role of Antonio Salieri for Spinning Tree Theatre’s Amadeus. Sir Ian McKellen won a Tony Award for his portrayal pf this character, and F. Murray Abraham won and Oscar for his interpretation of this role, Robert talked about the adventure of playing Salieri.

Mozart continues to influence popular music today. One of our local record labels The Record Machine just put out a compilation of area bands that include a new song from the Milwaukee band, Light Music called, “Amadeus.” In the way that Peter Shaffer tells the story you could almost say that to Salieri, Amadeus Mozart looked and lived like punk rocker. The composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart died on Dec 5, 1791 at the age of 35.

Antonio Salieri was born Aug 18, 1750 and died May 7, 1825. He was an Italian classical composer, conductor, and teacher. 18th century Vienna, court composer Antonio Salieri is highly admired…until Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart arrives. This play pits blazing human ambition against heavenly genius.

Amadeus is a play by Peter Shaffer, which gives a highly fictionalized account of the lives of the composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri. First performed in 1979. Significant use is made of the music of Mozart, Salieri and composers of the period. The premieres of Mozart’s operas The Abduction from the Seraglio, The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, and The Magic Flute are each the setting for key scenes of the play. Amadeus won 1981 Tony Award for Best Play & 1984 Academy Award for Best Film.

Since original run, Shaffer has extensively revised play, including changes to plot details. At the opening, Salieri is an old man, having long outlived his fame. Speaking directly to the audience, he claims to have used poison to assassinate Mozart, and promises to explain himself.
