2. Perfume Genius – “Slip Away”

[First single from the fourth album from Perfume Genius, the stage name for Seattle-based solo artist Mike Hadreas who was born in the suburbs of Seattle, Washington. Hadreas studied painting in school and took piano lessons as a child.His mother was a special education teacher,and is now an assistant principal at a middle school. His parents divorced when he was a teenager. Growing up, Hadreas was the only openly gay student at his school, and he received death threats which were not addressed by the administration. He dropped out of high school during his senior year. Two years after dropping out, he was attacked by several young men in his neighborhood. He moved to Williamsburg, Brooklyn and worked as a doorman for a club in the East Village. In 2005, Hadreas returned home to Seattle and began recording music. In 2008, Hadreas set up a MySpace page under the name Perfume Genius, and thus began his music career. Hadreas’s music explores topics including sexuality, his personal struggle with Crohn’s disease, domestic abuse, and the dangers faced by gay men in contemporary society. No Shape was produced by Blake Mills (Fiona Apple. John Legend, Alabama Shakes). The album was praised by critics. Pitchfork awarded it an 8.8 and named it “Best New Album”, deeming it “his most realized album yet, a tender and transcendental protest record of love and devotion.” The Guardian commented that “No Shape sounds like a unique talent coming into full bloom.” Hadreas will embark on a headline tour in the U.S. and Canada this spring and summer. He will also be performing at a number of the major European and British music festivals this summer.]

3. Laetitia Sadier Source Ensemble – “Love Captive”

[“Love Capture” features a duet with Alexis Taylor of the band Hot Chip. Lætitia Sadier was born May 6, 1968. She is a French musician best known as the singer of the band Stereolab. One of our mot favorite bands of all-time. Sadier was working as a nanny when she met guitarist Tim Gane at a gig in Paris during the late 1980s. Sadier was disillusioned with the rock scene in France, and soon moved to London to be with Gane and to pursue her career. She contributed vocals to Tim Gane’s band, McCarthy’s final albums and when McCarthy broke up in 1990, she and Gane immediately formed Stereolab. For the first incarnation of the band, they enlisted ex-Chills bassist Martin Kean, drummer Joe Dilworth and Gina Morris on backing vocals. Tim Gane has written the bulk of the music in Stereolab, Sadier is the main contributor of lyrics, written in both English and French. Sadier also plays keyboards, percussion, guitar and trombone. Stereo lab released 10 studio albums between 1992 and 2010 and released 7 special compilation albums. Tim Gane has gone on to release new music under the name Cavern Of Annti-Matter, that we’ve previously played on this radio show. Laetitia Sadier has release several solo albums and with the band Monade.]

5. The Black Angels – “Death March”

[American psychedelic rock band from Austin, Texas. They have released four studio albums and one compilation album. Their name is derived from the Velvet Underground song “The Black Angel’s Death Song.” Current members include: Stephanie Bailey on drums, percussion, bass; Christian Bland on guitar, vocals, bass, drums; Alex Maas on vocals, bass, guitar, keyboards; Kyle Hunt on keyboards, percussion, bass, guitar; Jake Garcia on guitar, bass, vocals.]

7. Karla Lara – “Que Corra El Rio”

[Que Corra el Rio translates: How the River Runs. The song is about Rio Blanco and the struggle of the Lenca people against the Agua Zarca hydroelectric dam which threatened to block the people’s use of the river and destroy their way of life. It’s about the lives that have been lost defending the river, including Berta Caceres.]

[Karla Lara plays live in Kansas City Tonight, when Cross Border Network presents, ”13 Colors of the Honduran Resistance” Wednesday, May 10, at 7:00 PM, at Uptown Arts Bar, 3611 Broadway KCM0, with Afro-indigenous autonomous feminist, poet & writer Melissa Cardoza & Karla Lara, a feminist who voices resistance through song & writing. These two Honduran activists are on a national tour honoring the life of Berta Cáceres. Melissa Cardoza’s book, “13 Colors of the Honduran Resistance” tells thirteen stories of women who joined the resistance to the U.S. backed 2009 coup d’etat. It has just been made available in a bilingual English/Spanish edition. Beloved Honduran jazz/folk protest singer Karla Lara, who appears in one of the book’s stories and has been an icon and sharp voice in the resistance. Melissa and Karla were amongst the closest friends to Berta Cáceres, the Honduran indigenous leader and organizer of COPINH who was assassinated for her work in defense of the Lenca people and against patriarchy, capitalism, and racism. This book and this tour are dedicated to Berta.A post-performance dialogue will examine parallels between current struggles in Honduras and the U.S. A $15.00 donation is requested, but no one will be turned away. 10:30 – Interview with Johnny Hamil, Marco Pascolini, and Chad Meise

The last time we had a mini-reunion of members of the famous long-time Kansas City band Mr. Marco’s V7 on this radio show was on February 16, 2011 when Johnny Hamil, Marco Pascolini, Kent Burnham and Mike Stover joined us on to talk about the band’s new release, Sparkin’ Your Mama. It was later that year, in 2011, that classically trained bassist Johnny Hamil, who dreams his musical compositions in his sleep, noticed something revolutionary for his creative process when Johnny’s dream compositions included lyrics for the first time, and this set him on a new path to create, the GAWD project, which is not Mr. Marco’s V7 proper, but it is members of the Mr.Marco’s V7 from throughout the long history of the the band. The concept was to collaborate a vocal version of a composition with musical friends and then have various lineups of the V7 family interpret the material in different ways: CartoonNoirJazz, PunkFunkPolka, and FreeExoticaMiddleEastern. Add to this a new vinyl release from Mr. Marco’s V7 called, Man Of Action! II Vol. 1 Motion Picture Soundtrack, the band’s first vinyl release in their 20 year history, that includes several songs for their past recordings.

Johnny Hamil’s Mr. Marco’s V7 bandmates, Marco Pascolini and Chad Meise are also with us to discuss the whole Mr. Marcos V7 spectrum and how all these new and different GAV7D recordings fit together.

Mr. Marco’s V7 was titled after Johnny Hamil’s determination to put Marco Pascolini’s name in the title of the band name and Marco’s randomly looking at a hair tonic’s bottle’s secret formula (V7).

Marco Pascolini is one half of The Country Duo, with Kasey Rausch, and off shoot of theor band The Naughty Pines, he also plays with The Dead Voices, Expassionates, The Brannock Device, and more.

Chad Meise is a master of sound and the studio and stage producing and engineering records for Mr. Marco’s V7, Hearts of Darkness, Expassionates, Rex Hobart, Mike Dillon, The Gaslights, Atlantic Fadeout, and The Country Duo, to name a few.

Saturday, August 26, The original Mr. Marco’s V7 quartet will return to Davey’s Uptown Ramblers Club, for a special live show. Mr. Marco’s V7 will also be re-releasing their out-of-print first album that was recorded live at The Cowtown Ballroom. Mr. Marco’s V7 will perform the songs from that first album, along with the premiere of new works by the band.

Man Of Action! II Vol. 1 is the soundtrack album for MK 12 Film. She studied Film History, Film, & Writing at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York, and received her MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago studying Film, Video, New Media, & Animation. Mikal is the creator of the web television project, “Go! Go! Global Girls.” She has also created music videos for herself, Dead Voices and Folkicide. Mikal performs with Chad Brothers as, The Shapiro Brothers, and she is a member of the 6-piece latin based band, Ayllu. Mikal Shapiro’s full length solo releases include: ”The Crow The Lark And The Loon,” (2008), “For Good,” (2010), and “The Musical,” (2015). 11. Frank Black & The Catholics – “The Swimmer”

[Singer, songwriter and guitarist Charles Michael Kittridge Thompson IV was born April 6, 1965. He is best known as the frontman of the influential alternative rock band Pixies, with whom he performs under the stage name Black Francis. Following the band’s breakup in 1993, he embarked on a solo career under the name Frank Black. After releasing two albums with record label 4AD and one with American Recordings, he left the label and formed a new band, Frank Black and the Catholics. He re-adopted the name Black Francis in 2007. Frank Black’s third album with backing group the Catholics, was released by the Cooking Vinyl record label in 2001, and was produced by Nick Vincent. The album was generally met with favorable reviews. Though retaining the live-to-two-track method of recording of the previous two albums, this album found the band branching away from purely electric rock to incorporate acoustic guitar, pedal steel, and Rhodes Piano and Wurlitzer organ into the sonic template. The album was initially released by the What Are Records? label in 2001, and was reissued by SpinART in 2003.]

12. L7 – “Monster”
from: Bricks Are Heavy / Slash Records / April 14, 1992
[Los Angeles, California, based band, active from 1985 to 2001, and reunited in 2014. Due to their sound and image, they are often associated with the grunge movement of the late 1980s and early 1990s. L7 influenced many of the “riot grrrl” bands of the 1990s. L7 were formed by Donita Sparks and Suzi Gardner in 1985. A year prior, Gardner had performed backing vocals on the Black Flag song “Slip It In”. The punk rock duo were joined by Jennifer Finch on bass guitar and Roy Koutsky on drums. Koutsky left shortly after and was briefly replaced by Anne Anderson in 1988. After Anderson quit the band, Demetra “Dee” Plakas became the permanent drummer. The band’s name derives from a 1950s slang phrase meaning “square”. The expression “L7” can be heard in the Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs song “Wooly Bully” (“Let’s not be L7, come and learn to dance…”), in the Rick James song “Bustin’ Out” (“L7- just a little too damn straight…”), in the Paul McCartney song “C Moon” (“I could be L7 and I’ll never get to heaven if I fill my head with glue”) and the Sex Pistols song “I Wanna Be Me” (“Don’t wanna be L7 I’ve had enough of this”).In 1991, the band formed Rock for Choice, a Pro-Choice women’s rights group that was supported by other prominent bands of that era including Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana, and Rage Against the Machine. Their 1992 third album Bricks Are Heavy, produced by Butch Vig, was featured in Rolling Stone’s May 1999 list of ‘Essential recordings of the 1990s’, and was their most successful release.]

13. Eleni Mandel – “Giving Up The Fight”
from: Thrill / Hot Records / January 1, 2000
[Los Angeles, California based singer-songwriter. Since 2000, she has published albums through Zedtone Records in Toronto, Ontario, which in 2012 began licensing her releases to Yep Roc in the United States, and Make My Day in Europe. She is also a member of folk supergroup The Living Sisters with Inara George and Becky Stark. She has released 11 full length records.]

14. Shriekback– “Everything That Rises”
from: Oil & Gold / Island Records / January 1, 1985
[English rock band formed in 1981 in Kentish Town by Barry Andrews, formerly of XTC and League of Gentlemen (keyboards/synthesizers/vocals), and Dave Allen, formerly of the Gang of Four (bass), with Carl Marsh, formerly of Out On Blue Six (guitars/vocals) soon added to the line-up. They were joined by Martyn Barker on drums in 1983. Other members included: Luc Van Acker, Linda Nevill, Emma Burnham, Brian Nevill, Pedro Ortiz, Clare Hirst, Lu Edmunds, Wendy and Sara Partridge (from Electric Guitars), Steve Halliwell, Eve Moon, Ivan Julian, Mike Cozzi, and Jessica Palin/Jose Fina Cupido. Shriekback was originally formed in 1981 by Barry Andrews, and Dave Allen, expanding to a trio with the addition of Carl Marsh. They enjoyed some success on the dance chart on their original Y Records label, and had a string of hits on the UK Indie Chart, while their debut album, Care (1983) was picked up by Warner in the United States. They left Y for Arista Records for 1984’s Jam Science, also recruiting drummer Martyn Barker. The album reached number 85 on the UK Albums Chart, and the single “Hand on my Heart” charted in the Top 60 in the UK. They recorded the 1985 album Oil & Gold on Arista (released on Island Records in the USA). Marsh left Shriekback during the recording of Oil & Gold and was replaced on guitar by Mike Cozzi, with Andrews taking over lead vocals. Shriekback also left Arista and signed to Island Records for whom they recorded the 1986 album Big Night Music, after which Allen left to rejoin Gang of Four, and Shriekback remained a collaborative centred on Andrews. Allen would also go on to play in King Swamp and The Elastic Purejoy. Marsh was also in the band Happyhead. After a further album in 1988, Go Bang!, the band split up. Andrews continued working on other projects before re-forming Shriekback in 1992, although after the single “The Bastard Sons of Enoch” and album Sacred City, there would be no further releases until 2000’s Naked Apes & Pond Life album. Both Allen and Marsh returned to the studio to contribute to the recording of Shriekback’s 2003 release Having a Moment. Since Having a Moment, Andrews has recorded three albums for Malicious Damage (Killing Joke’s original label) under the Shriekback moniker. Film director Michael Mann was a fan of Shriekback, and used several of their songs in his films Manhunter and Band of the Hand, and in his television series Miami Vice. Shriekback are still actively producing music]

15. Suzanne Vega – “Solitude Standing”

[American singer-songwriter and record producer, best known for her eclectic folk-inspired music. Two of Vega’s songs (both from her second studio album Solitude Standing, 1987) reached the Top 10 of various international chart listings: “Luka” and “Tom’s Diner”. The latter was originally an a cappella version on Vega’s album, which was then remade in 1990 as a dance track produced by the British dance production team DNA, and was the song used as a test during the creation of the MP3 format.Vega has released nine studio albums to date, the latest of which is Lover, Beloved: Songs from an Evening with Carson McCullers, released in 2016. Suzanne Nadine Peck was born July 11, 1959, in Santa Monica, California. Her mother, Pat Vega (née Schumacher), is a computer systems analyst of German-Swedish heritage. Her father, Richard Peck, is of Scottish-English-Irish origin. They divorced soon after her birth. Her stepfather, Edgardo Vega Yunqué, also known as Ed Vega, was a writer and teacher from Puerto Rico. When Vega was two and a half, her family moved to New York City. She grew up in Spanish Harlem and the Upper West Side. She was not aware of having a different biological father until she was nine years old. They met for the first time in her late 20s and remain in contact. She attended the High School of Performing Arts where she studied modern dance and graduated in 1977.]

16. Violent Femmes – “Please Don’t Go”
from: Violent Femmes / Slash Records / 1983
[Originally formed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and active from 1980 to 1987 and again from 1988 to 2009. As of 2013, the band is active again. Performing as a trio, with singer, guitarist & songwriter Gordon Gano, bassist Brian Ritchie, and drummers: Victor DeLorenzo (1980–1993, 2002–2009 & 2013), Guy Hoffman (1993–2002), Brian Viglione (2013–2016), John Sparrow (2016-present). Violent Femmes have released nine studio albums and fifteen singles during the course of their career. The band found immediate success with the release of their self-titled debut album in early 1983. Featuring many of their well-known songs, including “Blister in the Sun”, “Kiss Off”, “Add It Up” and “Gone Daddy Gone”, Violent Femmes became the band’s biggest-selling album and was eventually certified platinum by the RIAA. Violent Femmes went on to become one of the most successful alternative rock bands of the 1980s, selling over 9 million albums by 2005. After the release of their third album The Blind Leading the Naked (1986), the band’s future was uncertain and they split up in 1987, when Gano and Ritchie went solo. However, they regrouped a year later, releasing the album 3 (1989). Since then, Violent Femmes’ popularity continued to grow, especially in the United States where the songs “Nightmares” and “American Music” cracked the top five on the Modern Rock Tracks chart.]

17. Eurythmics – “Cool Blue”
from: Touch / RCA / November 26, 1983
[British music duo consisting of members Annie Lennox and David A. Stewart. Stewart and Lennox were both previously in the band The Tourists (originally known as The Catch), who split up in 1980; Eurythmics were formed that year in London. The duo released their first album, In the Garden, in 1981 to little fanfare, but went on to achieve global success with their second album Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This), released in 1983. The title track was a worldwide hit, topping the charts in various countries including the US. The duo went on to release a string of hit singles and albums before they split up in 1990. By this time Stewart was a sought-after record producer, while Lennox began a solo recording career in 1992 with her debut album Diva. After almost a decade apart, Eurythmics reunited to record their ninth album, Peace, released in late 1999. They reunited again in 2005 to release the single “I’ve Got a Life”, as part of a new Eurythmics compilation album, Ultimate Collection. The duo have won an MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist in 1984, the Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1987, the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music in 1999, and in 2005 were inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame. Eurythmics have sold an estimated 75 million records worldwide. Touch was the band’s third album and was the duo’s first UK number-one album, and also reached the top 10 in the US. It has since been certified Platinum in both the UK and the US. The album was listed in Rolling Stone’s The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in 2003, and again in a revised list in 2012. Touch was recorded and mixed in only about three weeks at Eurythmics’ own London studio facility, The Church. Touch was also the first album to be released simultaneously on record and on the then-new CD format in the United States.]

19. Strawberry Switchblade – “Little River”

[Strawberry Switchblade were a Scottish female new wave duo formed in Glasgow in 1981 by Jill Bryson and Rose McDowall, best known for their song “Since Yesterday” from 1985, and their flamboyant clothing with bows and polka-dots. The punk movement expanded rapidly in the United Kingdom in 1976. At the time, Rose McDowall and Jill Bryson were part of the bohemian art scene who adored the New York Dolls and who followed Scottish punk band Nu-Sonics (aka Orange Juice) during their career, with McDowall playing and recording with Paisley punk band The Poems. Strawberry Switchblade is the only studio album released by the Scottish pop rock band Strawberry Switchblade.]
