He first started writing poetry and music in middle school and after high school he began apprenticeships in film and photography. He recorded and released his debut record Blk Flanl, with area producer and hip hop artist D/Will, (Denzil Williams). She organizes bands and shows and tours, including Summer Kamp Fest, Britt works at Josey Records, she is an artist and filmmaker and huge nurturer of Kansas City Punk Music Scene. Britt joins us to discuss Josey Records KC – Record Store Day.

[Chris Meck and The Guilty Birds are releasing their debut full-length album, “It’s 4 A.M. Somewhere!” Friday, April 8, at The Tank Room, 1813 Grand Blvd, with special guests Westerners, and Claire & the Crowded Stage. Doors at 8:30, show starts at 9:30.]

Chris Meck is one of Kansas City’s premiere lead guitarists. He was the co-founder guitarist and co-composer of songs from three of my favorite KC bands: of The Gaslights, Atlantic Fadeout, and Tiny Horse with his late wife Abigail Henderson. The two are co-founders of the Midwest Music Foundation and The MidCoast Takeover. I first heard his work as lead guitarist on the records and tours of Kristie Stremel’s first two solo releases. Chris also has contributed his guitar work to recordings of The Hearts of Darkness and The Architects. Chris Meck can make his guitar sing, and now with his trio, Chris Meck and The Guilty Birds he is not only in the role of lead guitarist, but also a lead singer, finding new songs, new words, singing with his guitar and with Calandra Ysquierdo on bass & vocals, and Michelle Bacon on drums & vocals.

Chris Meck talked about how these songs were created around the time of Abigail Henderson’s final days and through the time of his father’s death months later.

Musical history footnote: Abigail Hope Henderson Meck, died August 27, 2013, at her home in Kansas City after a five-year battle with cancer. She was 36 years old. Abigail attended the UMKC. She graduated in 2002 with a bachelor of arts in English. After college, she also helped organize “Beauty Slays the Beast,” a benefit for political-activism and voter awareness. While in college, Abigail started playing guitar. In 2001, she started her first band, Trouble Junction with Mike Stover, John Bersuch, and Calandra Ysquierdo. In the fall of 2003, singer/songwriter Abigail Henderson and guitarist Chris Meck got together and started writing songs. They confessed that their first songs were “pretty country…pretty… cow-punkish.” Mike Stover wrote on facebook that, “Trouble Junction had to end so that Abigail could start the next chapters.” In 2003, Abigail started the band The Gaslights with Chris Meck, who would later become her husband. The Gaslights recorded five albums, releasing three of them.

Chris Meck and Abigail Henderson started their second band Atlantic Fadeout in 2010 in an effort to do songs that were not country sounding, but more rock. The band included Abigail Henderson on vocals & guitars, Chris Meck on guitar & vocals, Dutch Humphrey on bass & vocals, and Amy Farrand on drums.

Chris Meck and Abigail Henderson formed Tiny Horse in an effort to perform their slower songs and new songs for Abigail after chemotherapy had taken a big part of her powerful voice.

Abigail Henderson and Chris Meck are co-founders of Midwest Music Foundation.

Chris Meck is also a sound engineer who works for many music venues all over Kansas City. He also runs sound for The MidCoast Takeover, an huge annual project of Midwest Music Foundation. The MidCoast Takeover, is a four day showcase of over 100 bands. The MidCoast Takeover is presented in Austin, Texas, during the SXSW Music Festival. The MidCoast Takeover gives opportunity and a spot light to hundreds of area musicians and their bands, on two stages at the Shangri La in Austin. Chris Meck discussed how he has also worked a lot as a bartender and in this line of work you are many times getting home at 4:00 in the morning, when everything outside is quiet, except for those early birds chirping, the birds are up to see you coming home so late, they’re “the guilty birds.” This also explains the name of their new recording.
