11:15 – Interview with Nate Allen

Nate Allen, with his wife Tessa, perform as the band, Destroy Nate Allen. Fellow singer songwriter Doby Watson wrote in Deli KC that, Destroy Nate Allen is “a force of nature. A performance-based, upbeat and exciting whirlwind of energy that most full bands could aspire to attain.” After lengthy touring, Nate’s wife Tessa told him to start a solo project so she could have a break. In no time Nate wrote an entire album of songs that were different and darker than the colorful, and optimistic songs of Destroy Nate Allen. Recorded in Portland, Oregon before Nate and Tessa moved to KC about a year ago. Nate Allen & The Pac-Away Dots, are releasing the new album, Take Out The Trash on vinyl. A Special release show for Take Out The Trash is, Wednesday, September 16, at recordBar, 1020 Westport Rd. with Von Strantz opening the show.

Nate wrote that something needed to change. He needed to slow down and apologize for the non-stop pace he had dragged his wife/bandmate, Tessa, through. Staying constantly busy going back to college, recording MANY albums and playing over 800 shows since 2007.

Tessa told him to start a solo project so she could have a break. He listened to her, and in short time wrote an entire album in stark contrast to our bubbly Destroy Nate Allen persona.

On “Social Equality” he contrasts his experiences with those of his friends as we share the same streets. “Blinded by innocence, not fearing anyone, walking with great confidence. Chosen by providence, raised with such ignorance, vindication I do seek.”

Nate Allen wrote that “As he focused intensely on looking for work, Portland doors kept shutting but Kansas City seemed to open up. There was work to be found, a cheap place to live and an unknown land. He and Tessa took the jump. Before moving, he dived into recording with a full band, wanting to document what the songs had become. This was a Portland record, and he had no idea how relevant it would be to his new home, or to the rest of the country for that matter.” As Nate wrote: “Written by a workaholic during the throes of unemployment, Take Out The Trash covers the identity struggle between projecting a good image and actually being a kind person.”

Take Out The Trash was funded via Kickstarter pre-orders.
This is Nate’s first non-Destroy Nate Allen since 2006.
The Pac-Away Dots are Nate’s backing band when he has one.
Nate will be touring the album starting in October around the US.

[Major label debut, from folk-blues-Americana band from New Orleans, Louisiana features original songs written or co-written by Alynda Lee Segarra, and featureing fiddler Yosi Perlstein, keyboard player Casey McAllister, and two members of The Deslondes: Sam Doores on guitar and Dan Cutler on bass. Hurray for the Riff Raff is a music collective that was formed by singer-songwriter and banjo player Alynda Lee Segarra who grew up in the Bronx, and is of Puerto Rican descent. She says she was raised by her aunt Nereida. After two self-released albums, 2008’s It Don’t Mean I Don’t Love You and 2010’s Young Blood Blues, Hurray for the Riff Raff released a self-titled CD composed of Segarra’s favorite songs from those records on Loose Music in Europe on March 21, 2011. Tracks from the band’s debut release received airplay on BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6 Music. In February 2011, the band were featured in an article in The Times, based around the HBO TV series, Treme, with their track “Daniella” being listed in their selection of New Orleans’ essential songs]
