Ordinary Elephant won the 2017 International Folk Music Awards – Artist of the Year – right here in Kansas City at The Folly Theatre, (February 14, 2018).
Folk Alliance International held the their annual conference in Kansas City that year.
Pete & Crystal Damore quit their jobs to go full time on their music. Crystal and Pete had to set aside the work they’d done previously, as a veterinary cardiologist and a computer programmer, respectively. The two met at an open mic in College Station, Texas, in 2009 and soon moved to Houston together. With her on acoustic guitar/lead vocals and him on clawhammer banjo/harmony vocals, the work of music continued on the side as both had full-time jobs, until they threw all caution to the wind and hit the road in an RV.
The choices we make are not always easy or safe, but they are important. The songs on Honest speak, again and again, to being our truest, best selves, no matter who we are or where we come from. Indeed, every of us has a heritage, a legacy, a story, of which we are a part, for better and for worse. Each moment and memory a lesson leading us to who we will be.
“Honest” was funded with a Kickstarter campaign.
“Honest” is being called ” one of the best Americana albums of the year.”
One review said that their name Ordinary Elephant “sounds like a ’90s jangle-pop band that never broke through. If that’s your expectation, prepare to be surprised.”

Pete grew up in Austin, Texas, in a big Italian family who gathered for big Italian meals, and he’s quick to admit that we all live in bubbles of our own making or choosing. “I can only imagine growing up in a toxic environment,” he offers. “Without the perspective gained from travel and experiencing other cultures, it’s nearly impossible to realize how toxic your world actually is. I can’t fault anybody not overcoming. I’m not in their shoes. I know I can’t change them by telling them they’re wrong, but I do know that people can change when they see new things.”

5. Clairo – “Bags”

[Claire Cottrill was born August 18, 1998. She is known professionally as Clairo, and is from Carlisle, Massachusetts. Her fame escalated after releasing “Pretty Girl” in 2017, a lo-fi-produced song that attracted over 35 million views on YouTube. She credited her sudden popularity to the website’s algorithm system. Claire was born in Atlanta, Georgia, the daughter of marketing executive Geoff Cottrill. According to her, “Pretty Girl” was inspired by 1980s pop music, and that although she was tagged with the “bedroom pop” label, it was not her intention to make that style of music. After the popularity of “Pretty Girl”, Clairo signed a record contract with Fader. Clairo’s father, Geoff Cottrill, formerly held top positions at Procter & Gamble, Coca-Cola, Starbucks, Converse, and MusiCares a philanthropic organization associated with the Grammy Awards. Between 2015 and 2017, he was president of American operations at MullenLowe Lintas Group. Claire began recording covers at the age of 13 and taught herself guitar from Internet tutorials. During this time, MTV contacted her to record a song to be used as background music for one of their shows, but the song was never used. Under the names Clairo and DJ Baby Benz, she began posting music to Bandcamp while in high school before beginning to post covers and songs in addition to DJ mixes of rap music on SoundCloud. She also maintained a YouTube channel where she would post covers and short films. In 2017, she began attending Syracuse University. Clairo’s “Pretty Girl” was recorded for an indie rock compilation benefiting the Transgender Law Center. According to her, she recorded the track “using the resources around me which were pretty shitty. I used like a little keyboard that I had and I was really into ’80s pop music — my mom is obsessed with it — so it kind of inspired me to do something like that.” The video also became popular on vaporwave-centric Facebook groups. Another video that was uploaded to YouTube a month earlier, “Flamin Hot Cheetos”, garnered 3 million views by July 2018. The success of “Pretty Girl” led to interest from major labels such as Capitol, RCA, and Columbia. Clairo signed a 12-song record contract with Fader Label. According to The New York Times, this was made possible by her father’s connection to Jon Cohen, co-founder of The Fader and an executive at the publication’s marketing agency, Cornerstone. He signed Clairo to the magazine’s associated record label. Clairo is managed by Mike Ahern and Jimmy Bui. “The whole ‘do-it-yourself’ attitude is everything that I’m about. […] I think it’s really important to be genuine and authentic with everything you do.” —Claire Cottrill, 2017 interview with Fader. In October 2017, an article about Clairo was published by Fader, in which she stated that she was most inspired by Brockhampton, and cited their “do-it-yourself ‘attitude'” as her ethos. Some online communities criticized her comments as disingenuous, arguing that her professional career was borne from nepotism, and thus she should not be considered a true DIY musician. They accused her of being an “industry plant”, in other words, an artist who has backing from the music industry to advance or kick-start their careers, but are deceptively presented as an independent start-up. Such discussion appeared mostly on Reddit. One of the widely shared posts lamented that, although the user enjoyed her music and thought she was an “inspiring” songwriter, they could not fathom why none of her articles and interviews acknowledged her father’s significant industry connections. Clairo described the “industry plant” accusation as sexist and denied that there was “a man behind my success”. The Ringer contributor Lindsay Zoladz commented that it would have likely been more difficult for Clairo to get a record contract without her father’s connections, and that “it is impossible to imagine Clairo’s success in a Gen X world, so vital is the internet to her appeal.” On May 25, 2018, Fader Label released Clairo’s debut record, titled Diary 001. In her review for Pitchfork, Fader contributor Sasha Geffen wrote that the EP ought to subside the “legions of naysayers who dismissed her as a one-hit fluke or an industry plant.” By then, “Pretty Girl” had amassed more than 15 million views on YouTube. A piece written by Joe Coscarelli of The New York Times said that the work: “bridges both worlds, building on the coy, understated bedroom pop of ‘Pretty Girl’ and ‘Flamin Hot Cheetos’ toward sturdier numbers like ‘4EVER’ and ‘B.O.M.D.'”. That same month, she announced a headlining tour throughout North America, opening for Dua Lipa on multiple dates. Her July performance at the Bowery Ballroom in New York was a sold-out show. In October 2018, she performed at Lollapalooza. She is scheduled to perform at Coachella 2019.]

Beabadoobee released her first song ‘Coffee’ and a cover of Karen O’s ‘The Moon Song’ on September 17, 2017. This was followed by the release of her debut EP Lice on March 1, 2018. Her second EP, titled Patched up was released on December 7, 2018. In early 2019, Beabadoobee released an EP titled Loveworm. 13. Pala Zolo– “Up Northern”

[Pala Zolo is the instrumental electronic project of Lawrence, KS musician Eric Davis. In Pala Zolo, Davis blends synthesizers and drum machines with live instruments to create his blend of cinematic pop music. He chose the name to pay homage to his Sicilian heritage by naming the project after a small Sicilian village he spent time in while studying abroad in Italy. Pala Zolo allows Davis the full freedom to experiment in ways that are a departure from his main gig as the keyboard player in buzzy up-and-coming rock band Hembree (Thirty Tigers, Oread Records). // The inspiration for Pala Zolo came from a chance meeting with fellow electronic musician, Tycho’s Scott Hansen. One day while working at The Granada Theater in Lawrence, Davis was given the job of being Hansen’s driver. For years Davis had been writing and recording his own demos and was completely unsure of what to do with them. After spending the entire day with Hansen and seeing him perform, Davis realized he could bring his incomplete ideas to life in his own unique way. Seeing an instrumental band perform such an emotionally charged set inspired Davis to finish his songs without traditional vocals and to begin creating his own sound in that genre. // Soon after, Davis set forth to finalize the recordings with his good friend and producer Joel Martin (Y god Y). The two of them spent countless hours experimenting with synthetic and acoustic textures to create perfect soundscapes to compliment Davis’ intricately arranged compositions. In 2018, Davis self-released singles House Plant & 40K, and continued to take Pala Zolo to another level by performing live with drummer Gerardo Rojas. The duo brings the songs to life with live synths, guitars and drums and has been resonating with audiences. // In the summer of 2019, Pala Zolo is releasing their debut EP on Kansas City label The Record Machine and looks to take Pala Zolo to new heights.]

[NuBlvckCity is a KC-based music collective with Kartez Marcel (Addison), a native of Kansas City, Missouri, a Hip-Hop artist, and community program developer, sound engineer, entrepreneur, recording artist, musician, and songwriter. He provides resources to artists and assists with bringing their artistic visions to life, he also serves as the Director of A/V at a large faith-based organization. With Royce “Sauce” Handy he founded We Are Rap a hip hop program for youth. VP3 (Vernon Percy Howard III) is a Music Producer, Songwriter, Singer, Pianist, & Saxophonist. He recently gradualted from the University of Central Missouri where he studied digital media production. Mae C is a singer/songwriter who’s one of KC’s go-to voices and performer’s. Mae C is a KC based singer songwriter who we’ve played several times on the show. Her single “Anxious” was preceeded by her EP, Warning Sign of True Love. Influenced by Hip Hop, Rock, Jazz, Soul & R&B, Mae C is making her mark as an artist in the KC music scene. Royce “Sauce” Handy is a rapper, a songwriter, a beat maker, a designer, a teacher, an MC, a business owner, a social media manager, a husband, a father., a community organizer. He has worked with the AdHoc Group Against Crime, Teens in Transition, Storytellers Inc., Arts Tech, Mid-America Regional Council, UMKC, Representative Brandon Ellington, Mayor Sly James. He is co-owner of The Rap Asylum, We are RAP, and owner of Melanin Connoisseur.]

17. The Arsonists – “Alex (Radio Edit)”

[Notes excerted from The Unversity Daily Kansan: The Arsonists sparked a fire with their new music video featuring commentary on school shootings. Hailing from Lawrence High School, The Arsonists is a band composed of a group of sophomores. The current band is Aden Smith on the drums, Jaxon Ray on the keys and accordion, Giovanni Ventello on guitar and vocals, and Giovanni Lule-Paredes on bass. For the band’s most recent song, “Alex,” which also features fellow student Sadie Capps, the music video is filmed in black-and-white and features a school undergoing a lockdown situation during a lyrically implied school shooting. While the band plays in the gym, students hide under desks in classrooms and bathroom stalls, following procedure. Lyrically, “Alex” is a politically-charged song, commenting on politicians and older generations attacking students when they speak out about gun violence. The story behind the title of the song has a message hidden behind it. Alex Schachter was a victim in the Parkland school shooting. The fourteen-year-old played baritone in the school marching band and trombone in the orchestra. The Arsonists said they named the song after the late student musician to remember him and other victims of gun violence.]

18. Michigander – “Nineties”

[Michigander is Jason Singer, a Midland, Michigan based musician. Adopted at three-weeks-old, Jason gravitated towards music at a young age. He found an old classical guitar in the closet and taught himself how to play with a chord chart “from a guy at church.” In between piano lessons, he listened to everyone from James Taylor, The White Stripes, and Rush to Britpop a la Oasis, Coldplay, and Arctic Monkeys. Opting to forego college, he snuck off to play cover sets for 400 bucks a pop at night in bars and coffee shops alone. Relocating to Kalamazoo, he brought Michigander to life during 2014. The independent single “Nineties” took off, claiming real estate on Spotify playlists such as Indie All Stars, Viral Hits, and Indie 2017 and cracking 1 million streams on the platform. Between releasing the 2018 Midland EP, the group shared the stage with the likes of Ra Ra Ra Riot, Tokyo Police Club, Twin Peaks, and JR JR in addition to gracing the stages of festivals with alt-j, Solange, Foster The People, and Run The Jewels, to name a few. Signed to C3 Records, he recorded Where Do We Go From Here and expanded the sound in 2019. Jason wrote everything in his bedroom over the course of six months and followed a thematic thread inspired by his recent move back to Kalamazoo from Midland. Co-producing alongside Jake Rye, he emphasized the prominence of solos—in every song—making what he aptly describes as, “big pop songs disguised with guitars.]
