10:15 – Interview with Rolf Petermann and artists from Whatever Forever

Rolf Petermann is the co-founder of Whatever Forever, a Post-Post, Pre-Reality Tape Label and Music Collective in Lawrence, Kansas. Rolf joined us to share information about The Seedco Harvest Festival, this Saturday, September 13, 4:00 pm to 11:00 pm, in East Lawrence at the 800 Block of Delaware. Whatever Forever musicians also joined us and performed songs live in our 90.1 FM Studios.

Whatever Forever, is a Tape Label and Music Collective in Lawrence, Kansas.

SeedCo Harvest is a music and arts based festival highlighting the new SeedCo Studio space and their resident artists. The Seedco Harvest Festival will also feature 16 local food, retail, beer and activity vendors.

SeedCo Studios: is a visual arts and music space ideal for making, showing and engaging in all aspects of contemporary fine art. SeedCo will be moving their space from Pennsylvania St to Delware St where the Festival will be held

Nicholas Stahl plays drums in the band Your Friend. He is also in the band, Dean Monkey & the Dropouts. Nicholas talked about how he became a member of Your Friend, about how he approached Taryn Blake Miller about being her drummer and she brought him on board 6 months later. He talked about the band’s recent tour, the the interchangeable players collaborating in each other’s bands as part of the Whatever Forever family.

Many of the Whatever Forever musicians are involved with local food production, farming, the Merc, and the environment.

Sean Starowitz is a 2010 graduate of the Interdisciplinary Arts program at the Kansas City Art Institute. He is the co-founder of Bread! KC, with classmate Andrew Erdrich that since 2010 has fed thousands of attendees and raised thousands of dollars in micro grants i for art and community projects. Sean and Andrew created The Speakeasy a six-week temporary cultural center at the La Esquina Gallery, for the Charlotte Street Foundation. He also launched Byproduct: The Laundromat, a project he organized and received a Rocket Grant through the Andy Warhol Foundation to produce gatherings, discussions and performances during the wash and dryer cycles at Walnut Place Laundromat in KCMO. This year he has been actively involved in Lots of Love, a community art project that repurposes abandoned lots in the Ivanhoe neighborhood. Sean Starowitz is also a 2014 Charlotte St. Foundation Visual Art Award Fellow.

Sean joins us today to discuss The Talk Shop, a temporary, experimental cultural center that will open in Midtown Kansas City for one year at an store front art space located at 3936 Main, next to Oddly Correct. It will be a vehicle for dialogue by hosting public events at which people will gather to discuss topics that matter in Kansas City, like education, transit or food issues. Sean Starowitz talked about The Talk Shop, an “experimental cultural center” located at just across the street from our studios here on Main.

Starowitz and his team are currently in the midst of an Indiegogo campaign to help get the Talk Shop funded and off the ground. Indiegogo goal of $10,000, and the campaign runs until the September 17, 2014.

The Talk Shop Team:

John Helling – is a public librarian with a strong interest in bringing information to people and vice versa. He once had a pig butchered in a library just to prove a point.

Charlie Huette – is a public school teacher, instructional designer, and filmmaker. He currently teaches visual journalism and digital storytelling, and he advises a student-run media production studio. He enjoys thoughtful and honest public conversations about the causes and consequences of our current educational system.

Andrew Lyles – operated an artist run gallery, Spray Booth, in the Crossroads Art District of Kansas City, MO that was noted for bringing in 15 exhibitions that showcased over 300 Kansas City and visiting artists in a 2 year period. Lyles is an avid cyclist, adjunct drawing professor at Kansas City Art Institute, substitute teacher k-12, and recent projects include Lots of Love. Lyles is a graduate from KCAI 2010 Painting Department.

Taylor Pruitt – is a Graphic Designer/Art Director interested in community initiatives, identity systems and embracing the unexpected. A graduate of the 2012 graphic design program from KCAI. She is currently the Director of Programming on the Kansas City AIGA board focusing on organizing events for the local design community. She has previously worked in advertising and is currently a graphic designer at MindMixer, a startup focused on building better communities.

Lauren Tweedie – is a storefront artist and a clothing designer. She is interested in the way design can create a relationship between a public space and a community.

Sean Starowitz’s work is executed in a variety of social, political, and community engaged contexts. Notable projects include Lots of Love, BREAD! KC and Byproduct: The Laundromat. He is a 2010 graduate of the Interdisciplinary Arts program at the Kansas City Art Institute and a 2012 Rocket Grant recipient with support from the Charlotte St. Foundation, Spencer Museum of Art and the Andy Warhol Foundation. More recently, he is a 2014 Charlotte St. Foundation Visual Art Award Fellow.

Sean told The Pitch, “It is a diverse team, and for me that’s about bringing a variety of different people together to create something that’s bigger than themselves. To have a documentarian and a journalist is really important because of what we’re trying to explore for ourselves. ”

Starowitz told the Pitch: “There’s always been a rich history of artists running spaces in Kansas City, and I’ve always been interested in these storefront spaces as a format for artistic exploration. Gordon Matta-Clark is one of my biggest inspirations, and he did a project called Food in SoHo, and that’s one of the ideas we used to inform the Talk Shop. Also, in Chicago, there was a format called Mess Hall, and they were open for 10 years and run by 13 artists. It was an open format for a space, and that’s what the Talk Shop is really based off of.”

The Talk Shop will be open Sunday through Thursday, 6:00 pm. – 9:00 pm.

Artists onboard: Christina Kim, who created Dosa Inc., an eco-fashion line, among a ton of other things. She’s based in L.A. and has an international profile, and this will be her first project in the U.S. outside of L.A. She’ll do a community workshop that will be a large-scale installation in the neighborhood.

And we’re also working with Alex Elmestad, who I know from Bread for Work in St. Louis and my work with the Laundromat.
