It was part of WMM’s 121 Best Recordings of 2021. She wrote, “After years of writing and recording in voice memos .. I decided to grab my iPad and began recording something that I am very proud of. I named it, At the Close of A Decade, and released it in November 2019. With my iPhone/iPad, some apple headphones, I created this project. The amazing people around me told me it was worth it, even when I didn’t believe it myself. I convinced myself I would be the only one that liked my songs. If you decide to listen you’ll hear sound clips of shows and movies that made a difference in the way I saw the world, the way I saw myself, and the way I overcame my experiences. I remember asking my grandma and my son if I should release what I’ve been writing and they both said very simply to do it, so I’ve done it. I want to thank all of my wonderful friends who have been my soundboards during this process, all of the people that have asked me when it’s coming, the people that have kept me accountable, and believed that this time it was for real. My story is so very triumphant and beautiful because I have overcome experiences and shunned the fear I had to do what I love. It’s crazy how you can talk your way out of some amazing things and also how you can talk yourself into making some amazing things happen.    [Satchel of Songs cover artwork by Gabriela Goraczko. // On Diane Patterson’s seventh solo recording Satchel of Songs (Release date: March 8th, 2022), Patterson’s trademark mystic-acoustic-Americana, music-as-activism, and love-as-revolution are ever-present, buoyed and inspired by years of touring in the US, Europe, and her beloved Scandinavia, where she has spent extensive heartfelt time. The embrace of Patterson’s musical path by the Swedes and Danes led to her write the title track in Sweden in 2019. That was the catalyst that sparked and flavored the collection of songs that comprise the album. // All tracks were produced by Mike Napolitano (Ani DiFranco, Squirrel Nut Zippers) in New Orleans, except for two songs: One Part Corn, by Pedro Vadhar in Mexico; and Turn Toward the Sun, produced by Roman Morykit (Gypsy Soul). Musicians include Diane Patterson vocals, guitar, bass, drum Terence Higgins (Ani DiFranco, Dirty Dozen Brass Band) drums, Joe Craven (Jerry Garcia and David Grisman) percussion and mandolin, Barbara Higbie (Bonnie Raitt) fiddle, Al Torre (Tina Malia) guitar, Rick Nelson (Rickie Lee Jones) upright bass, violin, viola and cello, Todd Sickafoose bass, keys, Janelle Burdell percussion, Mia Pixley cello, Robert Comeaux pedal steel, Alex Smith bass, Elin Telius yoik vocals, Ani DiFranco vocals, Alice DiMicele vocals, and Gordon Hellegers (Simrit Kaur) Kora. // The album kicks off with Diane’s reggae-tinged theme song, Roots Heart Rhythm, an invocation for the earth, and an invitation to “Come sit beside me by this fire.” Prayerful offerings are interwoven throughout with the native nuanced One Part Corn, and spirit moving groove and positivity of Cookfire. Silk and Honest Pay stems from an ancient Viking song from which one line remains “I dreamed a dream tonight of silk and honest pay.” The song slowly builds from the nostalgic to the bliss of the dance, with ethereal whispers on the intro and outro of the track by Bodil Jørgensen of Denmark, and Anna-Elvira Cederholm from Sweden. The title track Satchel of Songs was written and offered as an apology song for the unspeakable wrongs committed by the dominant culture on indigenous people, after meeting Elin Teilus, a Swedish woman whose father descends from the reindeer-herding Sami ethnic indigenous people of northern Scandinavia and Russia. “Can the people stand back and pray?” is a plea for guidance amidst painful realities in the refrain of Steady the Hand, written for child soldiers everywhere, while Maybe Easy ponders how love and beauty exist side by side with grief and sorrow. The story of the water protectors at Standing Rock and their resiliency to stop the pipeline unfolds on Turn Towards The Sun. The album closes out with the joyous Somewhere There’s a Song Still Singing that celebrates the tradition of ancient migrating people who, when approaching a place would listen for the song, the ‘lay’, of the land, and Where Are We, a poem written by Coleman Barks, inspired by the 13th- Century mystic Persian poet Rumi, set to a Jimmy Cox-style shuffle by Patterson. // Satchel of Songs is music for the movement. These songs honor ancient people and the land, and speak of reconciliation and peace, while being ever hopeful for a bright future. 5. Believers – “Precious Decade”

   [Oakland, California based band. If you plopped Arthur Russell into early 90s Manchester among The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, and the like, you might end up with something like Believers. Wesley Powell, the artist behind the name, throws a myriad of influences from ambient to krautrock to jock jams into a pot and boils them down into some version of pop. Languid vocals drift atop layers of plinky guitars and synth swells, all of it undergirded by heavy bass riffs and drum machinery. // Piecemeal, Believers’ third release, is a transitional record that both marks the end of the collaborative era with brother Tyler Powell and welcomes the next with Wesley going it alone, this time with a few more studio toys. Believers features the voice and lyrics of Wesley Powell, the artist behind the name, Believers now based in Oakland California.

This weekend’s Lemonade Social on Friday and Saturday Nights is a celebration of The Record Machine’s 19 year Anniversary

The Record Machine started as a homegrown, pioneering independent record label and expanded to events in Kansas City, MO. We initially established the label to promote and release music from our hometown, but as time went on, we began releasing records from all across the country. We aim to work with a diverse group of hardworking, dedicated, and stand out on their own accord. Our catalog is an eclectic mix; we are proud that we don’t fit into any single genre and a unifying, uplifting quality to our releases. We hope to nurture musicians and connect them with a broader audience. Tim Finn of The Kansas City Star remarked about The Record Machine’s output “[They] have assembled a stable of diverse artists who are making music that deserves national attention.”

In 2011 The Record Machine founded Middle of the Map Fest as a joint venture between KC’s Ink magazine(Part of the KC Star) and The Record Machine. In the years since, the festival has grown to encompass Music, Speakers, and Film. Bands that we love like Spoon, Grizzly Bear, Iron and Wine, Fred Armisen, OK Go, Lord Huron, Vince Staples, Cold War Kids, Charles Bradley, Aimee Mann, Atmosphere, The Get Up Kids, Daniel Johnston, Of Montreal, Kate Nash, The Joy Formidable, Two Door Cinema Club and many more have shared the same stage as Record Machine artists.

“It’s a great way for KC to show off and, more specifically, showcase our flourishing arts and culture scene,” KC Mayor Sly James said in a KC Biz Journal article earlier that year. “Events like Middle of the Map Fest bring crowds of people to our city who oftentimes leave in awe of everything Kansas City has to offer.”

Blonde Bones has release two singles this year on The Record Machine in anticipation to their album, Hotel Swimming Pool. The band’s first single to be released since 2020 is “New Animals.” Blonde Bones breaks the mold of Music City. Comprised of Nashville natives Christian Barnett, Joe Reb, Daniel Ryan, and Portland, OR transplant Jacob Carey, the up-and-coming indie rock group, is hitting its stride and developing a well-deserved reputation as a tour-de-force live band with a growing fan base all across the South.

6. Bathe Alone – “Decades and Dreams”

   [One of 4 new singles released this year by The Record Machine fro Bathe Alone, “Once More” (July 8, 2022), “Animals and Times” (May 13, 2022), “Waste It” (April 1, 2022), Bathe Alone’s devastatingly melancholic dream-pop pairs moody arrangements with hefty layers of reverb and delay. Led by front woman and multi-instrumentalist Bailey Crone, Bathe Alone began sharing her buzzworthy singles in 2019, culminating in her self-released enchanting full-length Last Looks. // After growing up with a formal background in classical music, Crone first found her way to becoming a multi-instrumentalist from behind the drum set. With a newfound fascination and desire to find a voice on drums, Crone picked up guitar and bass only to create material so that she could play drums. However, she soon realized she had a distinct identity on the other instruments. With a drumming vocabulary more akin to the punk world, and her ambient guitar drenched in delay rather than distortion, Crone was discovering a sound with an emphasis on mood. After several years of developing skill and hashing out ideas, it became apparent that Crone had unlocked a gift for melody and arrangement, but there was no clear path in showing her music to the world. It was only after cutting her teeth in several bands local to her hometown, Atlanta, that she turned her focus to a new project – Bathe Alone. She enlisted help from producer Damon Moon, who immediately recognized an untapped potential in Crone, and within months they had completed what would become Bathe Alone’s debut LP “Last Looks.” With a totally DIY rollout, the new project developed quite a bit of traction, creating a noticeable following on streaming platforms, which has been multiplied by the release of Bathe Alone’s take on the Madonna classic, “Take A Bow.” // Bathe Alone will release their second album, Fall With The Lights Down (via The Record Machine). It takes its sonic inspirations from experimenting with sound design technology and from Crone’s condition of synesthesia, which is when you experience one of your senses through another. Her love of genre-defying sound creates an immersive world throughout the album. Co-written with producer Damon Moon (Lunar Vacation, Dinner Time, Bandanna), the duo collaborated throughout the COVID-19 lockdown at Standard Electric Recorders Co. in Atlanta. Crone would book studio days with song demos, and the pair would follow each other down creative rabbit holes. // Fall With The Lights Down isn’t afraid to take a look at life’s big questions, like the passing of time, moving on after loss, and processing childhood memories. Its lead single “Decades & Dreams” celebrates friendship and fearlessly looks toward the future. Complete with propulsive new-wave a-la reverb chamber energy, Crone toasts “to memories and dreams / to our decades and dreams.” // The hypnotic guitar swells of “Missionary Ridge” conjure the laidback energy of summer. Crone reflects on her grandparent’s house in Chattanooga, and that kind of comfortable melancholy that feels like a soft childhood blanket. Meanwhile, the lyrics of “Missionary Ridge” shuffle between wistful and weary with evocative lyrics about “pictures from the 70s / sick of watching Dad’s TV”. // Songs like “Animals & Trees,” “Waste It,” and “Childhood” are all haunted with epiphanies about animal rights, problematic friendships, and growing up. Of “Animals & Trees”, Crone says “Damon and I really hit a magic groove on this one.” The song even uses whole reversed sections from an earlier demo to create hypnotic instrumentals that are perfect for “laying on the floor and staring at the ceiling.” // Fall With The Lights Down all comes to a head with its closer, “4u” — a gripping six-minute cut where Crone wrestles with those big questions about life. She adds, “I like to end my records with a tug at your heartstring – emotional, dead dog songs. I’m joking, but I’m not.” At times “4u” seems like it will collapse under its existential weight. Before ultimately shapeshifting into an all-out heart-in-your-throat showstopper, dense with layers of who-knows-what. // Throughout Fall With The Lights Down, Bailey Crone walks a spectacular tightrope between genre and convention, at times dreamy and others jarring, and always skirting between the two. She will be releasing Fall With The Lights Down on the Kansas City based label The Record Machine in the summer of 2022.]

7. Blonde Bones – “New Animals”

   [Blonde Bones breaks the mold of Music City. Comprised of Nashville natives Christian Barnett, Joe Reb, Daniel Ryan, and Portland, OR transplant Jacob Carey, the up-and-coming indie rock group, is hitting its stride and developing a well-deserved reputation as a tour-de-force live band with a growing fan base all across the South. // Barnett studied jazz guitar at the University of Tennessee, where he met Reb, studying acting – and the two began playing as a duo around town. Ryan, also studying music at UT – soon joined, and the group eventually met guitarist Carey in Nashville. The band has grown from its folky roots into a riotous indie quartet, with Barnett’s quirky lyricism and memorable melodies leading the way. // For their first full-length record, Hiding Out, the band worked with frequent producer and collaborator Damon Moon (Dinner Time, Bathe Alone, Sydney Eloise & the Palms) at his Atlanta studio Standard Electric Recording Co. The result was a trippy homage to maximalist psych/pop imbued with heart-wrenching loneliness and the occasional sideways glance toward good-hearted self-deprecation. Barnett’s dreamy vocals share the spotlight with chorus-laden guitars, swirling keys, woody bass lines, and urgent and clever percussion. // Hiding Out was released in February 2020… we all know what happened next. Suffice it to say, the album didn’t get its due. Not to be defeated, the band continued to book recording dates with Moon resulting in their latest release – the Swimming Pool EP – set to drop this summer. It is their first effort after signing with Midwest indie stalwarts The Record Machine. // The band’s first single to be released since 2020 is “New Animals.” Just in time for the weather to warm up, this earworm has an unforgettably catchy chorus, guitar licks that sound like they were pulled straight from a Gram Parsons record, lush rolling synths, and a deep-pocket rhythm section that will pull even the most discerning audience member out on to the dance floor. // The band has performed with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, opened for Nashville darlings Bully, were slated to play supporting dates with Florida-based Flipturn (thanks covid), and Barnett recently performed an acoustic set for Paste Studio On The Road when they stopped through Nashville. Festival appearances include Tomato Fest in Nashville, Rhythm n’ Blooms in Knoxville, and a wild mosaic of local and regional musical festivals.]

   [The first release on Bullseye Records. Calvin Arsenia who came home to KC in 2014 after living in Edinburgh, Scotland, and has released the EPs, Moments, Prose, and last year’s full length debut, Catastrophe. This year he released the EP Caviar to special guests who attended his Wickstock West show in West Bottoms. Standing at 6 foot 6 inches, Arsenia’s powerful vocals span a 3.5 octave range, while playing piano, banjo, guitar & harp. Calvin has played Folk Alliance International, KC Fringe Fest, Apocalypse Meow, The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, The Kauffman Center For The Performing Arts, Middle of the Map Fest., The Folly Theatre. In 2017 Calvin undertook a three month US/European Outlyre Tour where he has played San Francisco, Portland, Vancouver, NYC, Boston, Edinburgh, Sweden, Denmark, Holland, Switzerland, Lyon and Paris. Born in Orlando, Florida, his creative journey really began when he moved to the KC suburb of Olathe, teaching himself the guitar, and eventually the harp. He learned his signature instrument at the age of 20 after he couldn’t find a harpist as determined as him to meld folk, rock, classical, rap and R&B into the irresistible fusion which has become his calling card in the Kansas City music scene and beyond. His passion for stretching the boundaries of musical expression saw him transform a trip to Edinburgh, Scotland’s Fringe Festival early in his career into a life-changing music mission, with an Edinburgh church offering him a role as musical liaison between the church and the city that would change his life. Two years and 300 shows later, Calvin returned to Kansas City reborn as a humanistic songwriter/performer whose impassioned and conceptual stage shows are collaborative, costumed-culture-bridging spectacles which In KC Magazine has hailed as ‘equal parts opera, symphony, musical theatre, rock show, all built around its creator: a charismatic 6-foot-7-inch harpist with a natural stage command and knack for gilding gold and painting lilies.’ Calvin’s 2018 national debut, Cantaloupe (Center Cut Records), has been acclaimed for melding diverse textures into an alluring signature sound for the adventurous artist. Calvin performed live at L.A.’s The Mint, showcasing the songs on LA Sessions with the musicians who collaborated with him on the album. Says Calvin: “It’s such a special experience to play with them. To be able to perform these songs in front of an audience and do this for a living – to have made a career out of something I love is so amazing – it is an honor that I never take for granted.” Since Calvin Arsenia came home to KC after living in Edinburgh, Scotland, he has released his EP, Moments, in 2014, and his EP Prose in 2015, and his Folk Alliance exclusive EP Catastrophe in 2016. His full-length album Catastrophe on February 14, 2017, His EP Caviar in November 2017. Calvin’s 2018 national debut, Cantaloupe, on September 15, 2018 on Center Cut Records. 14. The Get Up Kids – “Better Half”

    [Matt Pryor on vocals & guitars, Jim Suptic on guitar, Rob Pope on bass, James Dewees on keyboards, Ryan Pope on drums. On June 8, 2018 The Get Up Kids released their KICKER EP on Polyvinyl Records. Polyvinyl announced on their Instagram account that they had signed the band and that new music will be coming soon. The Get Up Kids are an American rock band from Kansas City, Missouri. Formed in 1995, the band was a major player in the mid-1990s emo scene, otherwise known as the “second wave” of emo music. As they gained prominence, they began touring with bands such as Green Day and Weezer before becoming headliners themselves, eventually embarking on international tours of Japan and Europe. They founded Heroes & Villains Records, an imprint of the successful indie rock label Vagrant Records. While the imprint was started to release albums by The Get Up Kids, it served as a launching pad for several side-projects such as The New Amsterdams and Reggie and the Full Effect. The Get Up Kids were viewed throughout their existence as a prototypical emo band, having been major players in the Midwest emo movement of the mid-1990s. Their second album Something to Write Home About remains their most widely acclaimed album, and is considered to be one of the quintessential albums of the second-wave emo movement. However, like many early emo bands, The Get Up Kids sought to dissociate themselves with the term, as it was considered dismissive to be seen as an “emo band.”[8] The band departed heavily from their established style with the release of their 2002 album On a Wire, which saw the band take on a much more layered, alternative rock sound. Years later, guitarist Jim Suptic even apologized for having the influence they did on many of the modern third-wave emo bands, commenting that “[t]he punk scene we came out of and the punk scene now are completely different. It’s like glam rock now … If this is the world we helped create, then I apologize.” Due to internal conflicts, the band broke up in 2005. Three years later, the band reunited to support the tenth anniversary re-release of Something to Write Home About, and soon afterward entered the studio to write new material. In early 2010, the band released Simple Science, their first release in six years, followed in 2011 by the full-length There Are Rules. The Get Up Kids Members Rob Pope is also in the band Spoon; Jim Suptic is in the bands: Blackpool Lights, and Radar State; James Dewees is in the band Reggie and the Full Effect; and Matt Pryor performs often as a solo artists, and in the bands: Radar State, and The New Amsterdams.]

15. Ezmerelda – “I’m So Nervous”

    [Ezmerelda is the diy collaboration between indie veterans Kianna Alarid White (Tilly & the Wall, Yes You Are) and Cale Parks (Yeasayer, Aloha). The duo formed in the final months of 2021, drawing on influences like Fever Ray, Budgie-era Siouxsie and the Banshees and early M.I.A. Combining elements of their high intensity live shows with art-rock improvisation, Kianna and Cale took to the basement to self produce their brand of industrial, drum heavy electro-pop in October 2021. The result was a collection of immediately realized dance tracks that will make up the duo’s debut EP. Produced, mixed, and recorded by Kianna White & Cale Parks. Mastered by TJ Lipple. // Many of us were first introduced to Kianna Alarid White as part of the critically-acclaimed indie band, Tilly and the Wall, touring through the mid to late 2000s with bands such as She and Him, Bright Eyes, Rilo Kiley, and Of Montreal, playing venues around the world and major festivals like Coachella, Japan’s Summersonic, Reading, as well as performing on Late Night with David Letterman and Sesame Street before going on hiatus in 2013. Kianna has also performed guest vocals on Rilo Kiley’s “The Absence of God”, “In the Sun” by She & Him and co-wrote and sang on Tiësto’s song “You Are My Diamond”. In 2017, Kianna launched her band, Yes You Are, with husband and co-writer Jared White, with many song placements in movies, television and commercials, including a Pepsi Super Bowl 51 commercial. Known for their electrifying live performances, Yes You Are shared the stage with the likes of K. Flay, Young the Giant and Fitz and the Tantrums, and toured the US with Neon Trees. On November 15, 2019 they released one of our favorite albums of that year, “HERE’S TO THE GREAT UNKOWNS. In mid 2020 Kianna announced the band’s break up when unexpected and major changes in the lineup served as a clear sign it was time to move on. Kianna and Jared decided to start a new band behind Kianna as a solo artist Kianna White, releasing the single, “Homecoming Queen “ on September 25, 2020, along with an incredible video that Kianna herself filmed, starred in and edited alone in her bedroom using an iPhone, a Snapchat filter, a flashlight and iMovie). On April 30, 2021 Kianna released the single “All Alone With Everything.” // Cale Parks is best known for decades of drumming in the bands: Aloha, and Yeasayer, and in high profile side hustles such as: Passion Pit, Chet Faker, and Joan of Arc. Cale released the albums, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT on Sept. 26, 2009, and SPARKFACE on November 3, 2008, and the EP TO SWIFT MARS on August 3, 2004. But On May 18, 2015, Cale released his 4-track solo EP, LAGOON FOOL giving his fans the first sign of becoming a more of a “mood-altering” electronic producer with his multi-faceted record featuring interlocking melodies and everything from acid techno asides to piano-laced synth progressions. Cale followed LAGOON FOOL with his most recent solo EP, BOARDS, released on January 24, 2020 on Whirling Wolf Records. Boards ventures even further into the ether, piling on the sort of polychromatic chords, artful hooks, and mood-altering melodies one might find on an old Air or Durutti Column album. 16. Belle & The Vertigo Waves – “Love In Remission”

    [Belle & The Vertigo Waves is the sonic brainchild of Belle Loux. She resides in KCMO, and is slowly attempting world domination. Members include Belle Loux on lead vocals, John Loux on guitar. This new single is a follow up to “Stand Down” released Jan. 21, 2022. Belle & The Vertigo Waves released their debut album, ALIGNED on Drop Out Records on Oct. 6, 2017. “About the album, Belle told Michelle Bacon at The Bridge, “Many of the tunes had been written around five years prior, when I was just 15 or 16.” Belle had only played them as a solo artist with occasional accompaniment from her dad, guitarist John Loux, & keyboardist Charlie Hibberd. In 2017, she hired the two musicians and a couple other friends to track “Aligned,” dubbing the project Belle and the Vertigo Waves, in the hopes that she’d eventually assemble a live band. “Recording was a surreal and emotional experience. Playing the songs with a band was like seeing them come to life,” she said. “I knew there was no way I could be a solo artist anymore, because I fell in love with the full band sound so much.” The music of Belle & The Vertigo Waves have been described as having an “1980s pop-laden sound.” which drew local attention in 2018. Belle has said that in the past 4 years the band has grown to have more of a darker, glam rock sound, grittier and grungier. Their sound is influenced by three generations of musicians in the band, Belle’s growth as a songwriter and singer, and through the band’s work with engineer and producer Paul Malinowski. Belle & The Vertigo Waves released their single, “Fear or Faith” on June 7, 2019 on Drop Out Records. Belle & The Vertigo Waves released their single, “Pulse” on April 17, 2020 on Drop Out Records. Belle & The Vertigo Waves released their single, “Beat Me To The Punch” on Drop Out Records on Oct. 29, 2021. Belle & The Vertigo Waves joined us on WMM on Feb 5, 2020 and June 26, 2019.
