  1. Iris DeMent – “Working on A World”
    from: Working On A World – Single / FlariElla / January 10.2023
[This is the second single and title track from Iris DeMent’s upcoming 7th full length album, WORKING ON A WORLD to be released March 24, 2023. Stalled partway through by the pandemic, the record took six years to make with the help of three friends and co-producers: Richard Bennett, Pieta Brown, and Jim Rooney. It was Pieta Brown who gave the record its final push. “Pieta asked me what had come of the recordings I’d done with Jim and Richard in 2019 and 2020. I told her I’d pretty much given up on trying to make a record. She asked would I mind if she had a listen. So, I had everything we’d done sent over to her, and not long after that I got a text, bouncing with exclamation marks: ‘You have a record and it’s called Workin’ On A World!’” With Bennett back in the studio with them, Brown and DeMent recorded several more songs and put the final touches on the record in Nashville in April of 2022. // DeMent sets the stage for the album with the title track in which she moves from a sense of despair towards a place of promise. “Now I’m workin’ on a world I may never see ‘ Joinin’ forces with the warriors of love / Who came before and will follow you and me.” “Goin’ Down To Sing in Texas” is an ode not only to gun control, but also to the brave folks who speak out against tyranny and endure the consequences in an unjust world. // On October 6, 2020 iris DeMent released her single “Going Down To Sing In Texas.” Stereogum on October 13, 2020 wrote: Other than a handful of guest appearances, Americana legend Iris DeMent hasn’t released new music since her 2015 album The Trackless Woods, a collection of Anna Akhmatova poems set to original music. But DeMent is back today in a big way with “Going Down To Sing In Texas,” a lengthy rambler that’s a lot more serious than its casual, jazzy piano groove lets on. Over the course of nine minutes, DeMent addresses police brutality, George W. Bush (“What’s the deal with all these war criminals who get to walk around free?”), Islamophobia, progressive protesters (“I’m so proud of all of these young people for taking it to the streets”), gun control, Jeff Bezos (“Ain’t we all just a little bit tired of greedy people getting a free pass?”), the Chicks, the Squad, and Jesus Christ (“He spoke truth to power, he stood up for the poor/ The church today wouldn’t even let him through the door”) among other things. It’s a hell of a song, clear and direct yet artful in its conversational ease. Never forget that DeMent can go toe to toe with songwriting legends like her old duet partner John Prine. In his review for WHYY’s Fresh Air, Entertainment Weekly Music Editor – Ken Tucker wrote: “Iris DeMent possesses one of the great voices in contemporary popular music: powerfully, ringingly clear, capable of both heartbreaking fragility and blow-your-ears-back power. Had she been making country albums in the ’70s and ’80s and had more commercial ambition, she’d probably now be considered right up there with Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette. Instead, she’s lived a contemporary life, a somewhat private life. As she recently told an interviewer, “There’s a lot that goes into life besides songwriting.” And she’s taken her time in composing songs that fit into no genre easily.”]

[Iris DeMent plays Knuckleheads 2715 Rochester Street, KCMO on Thursday, March 23, 2023 at 7:30 PM with guest Ana Egge opening the show.] [Iris DeMent joins us LIVE on WMM on March 22.]

  1. Hadiza. – “Y2K”
    from: “Y2K” – Single / Hadiza. / December 31, 2022
[Music/lyrics: Hadiza. // Production: Bath Consolidated // Mixing/Mastering: HXXS // With the new single Hadiza released a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUV7wbN8obs Hadiza sent us this note: “Happy new year! I wanted to inform you of a new song I’ve just released as Hadiza….I’m quite proud of it! Hopefully you’ll enjoy the song and video (featuring choreography by me). I received notification that it’s now live on Spotify, but let me know if you’d like or need a .wav file if you wish to share over the airwaves.”” // “The song is a club song called Y2K and has actually been in the making more or less for about 2 years. My friend who wishes to be a ghostwriter (she doesn’t want people to identify her on the track), sent me the original beat, a house beat with a vocal sample of Chantal repeating “It’s the point of greatest intensity, pleasures of the highest sense”. // “Once she sent me the beat I immediately got to work adding some extra production and writing the words/melody and recording it into a full song. And as I was listening to it over and over, I began to move…which then turned into the full blown development of a routine to the song. “ // Lucky for me, I applied for and got the Charlotte Street studio residency as a performing artist with access to the dance and music rehearsal studios. That has allowed me more consistency with being able to rehearse and refine the choreography and I was also fortunate enough to be able to shoot the video inside the Black Box at Charlotte Street!” // “I worked with videographer, Lauren Schrader (just the two of us) to get the video footage. I then spent the month of December editing the footage into the above linked video. And last but not certainly not least, Gavin Neves of the noise duo HXXS mixed and mastered the track! “ // “It’s certainly not “mainstream” (have I ever sent you anything remotely “mainstream”? will I ever?) but it might make you want to move!” // Hadiza also plays in the bad Collidescope and Arquesta Del SoulSol // “Hadiza released her acclaimed album SHADOW WEIGHT on November 22, 2019. It was part of WMM’s 119 Best Recordings of 2019. Hadiza released her EP GONE on December 29, 2018 with Madi Monroe on bass & guitar, JL Bolinger on drums, and Hadiza Sa-Aadu on keyboards & vocals. Recording & Engineering: JL Bolinger & Madi Mclaughlin. Mixing & Mastering: Madi Mclaughlin. Hadiza. is a sKansas City based singer-songwriter. Previously based in her hometown of Iowa City, she has spent the 2018 slowly but surely carving out her place in the Kansas City scene both as a solo performer (as Hadiza.) and as lead vocalist and songwriter of experimental electronic group Collidescope. Blessed to have had parents who are very much NOT students of music, but recognized the importance of music education, Hadiza spent her childhood and adolescence in part as a student of piano. Vocally, Hadiza takes her cues from American artists including Fiona Apple, Tracey Chapman, and Billie Holiday and African artists including Angelique Kidjo,. Her sound/genre is best described as an eclectic blend of blues, soul, folk, jazz and classical. Her songwriting is a process of release and acceptance of life events navigating an often brutal bleak and harsh world and is a form of therapy. If you don’t relate to the content, you just don’t relate. Oh well. The most amazing experience however is when a stranger in the audience connects with a song in their own way and is courageous enough to share that with her. Aside from the therapeutic aspect of creating music, this is why she continues to write and perform. Collidescope released their new 7-track album, DEEP TAPE, on December 31, 2020. Collidescope is essentially a duo that includes: Hadiza. on vocals, beats, & synthesizers; and Madison Monroe on guitar, bass, beats, synthesizers, mixing and vocals. DEEP TAPE includes Victoria Falls Stillwater on addition sound production and vocals, and was mixed and mastered by J.Ashley Miller aka Jametatone. DEEP TAPE is a follow up the the band’s debut EP Systemic released December 16, 2017. Hadiza also is part of the band Arquesta Del SolSoul. 1. Jass – “Lifetime”
    from: “Liftetime” – Single / JASS / January 6, 2023
[Jass is Jasmine “Jass” Couch. Jass and The Boys released the single “Love U Like I Love U” on December 2, 2022. Jass released the EP, OFF KEY: TOO HIGH on September 23, 2022. Jass released the single “Higher Ground” on August 16, 2022. It was #1 on WMM’s 50 Favorite Singles of 2022. Jass released her single, “Him” on February 23, 2022. Jass released At the Close of a Decade on November 26, 2022. It was part of WMM’s 121 Best Recordings of 2021. She wrote, “After years of writing and recording in voice memos .. I decided to grab my iPad and began recording something that I am very proud of. I named it, At the Close of A Decade, and released it in November 2019. With my iPhone/iPad, some apple headphones, I created this project. The amazing people around me told me it was worth it, even when I didn’t believe it myself. I convinced myself I would be the only one that liked my songs. If you decide to listen you’ll hear sound clips of shows and movies that made a difference in the way I saw the world, the way I saw myself, and the way I overcame my experiences. I remember asking my grandma and my son if I should release what I’ve been writing and they both said very simply to do it, so I’ve done it. I want to thank all of my wonderful friends who have been my soundboards during this process, all of the people that have asked me when it’s coming, the people that have kept me accountable, and believed that this time it was for real. My story is so very triumphant and beautiful because I have overcome experiences and shunned the fear I had to do what I love. It’s crazy how you can talk your way out of some amazing things and also how you can talk yourself into making some amazing things happen. If you partake, I hope you enjoy.” // Jass has opened for Thundercat sat GRINDERS, headlined a show at The Bottleneck in Lawrence with my boys! (Colby Bales and Brande Moser), and she opened up for The New Respects at The Uptown, and sang the Negro National Anthem at BLAQUE to School Night at the KC Monarchs game.More info at: http://www.jassrcouch.com]

10:36 – Interview with Aaron Mitchum and Devon Teran of Timbers

Aaron Mitchum has one foot in the world of mental health and one foot in music. As a licensed counselor he is working daily with people to make a positive change. As a solo singer-songwriter and the lead person for the band Timbers he writes & performs regularly in KC and the surrounding area. Aaron sees a lot of overlap between his two passions: both embrace the struggle to find what is true in the human experience & coax it to the surface so it can be felt and shared. For him, there’s no better way to spend his time.

Aaron Mitchum Thank you for being with us on WMM.

Devon Teran is a founding member of Timbers for 9 years, he applies his craft to  pedal steel in addition to electric guitar. Always one to serve the song, he is a trusted sideman for artists such as Marty Bush, AM Merker, Kristin Hamilton as well as an in-demand session player. Devon Teran’s career is defined by slow but steady progress of putting in the work to hone his craft. On his journey he has served as a High School Teacher, Instructional Coach, School Principal and Community Advocate. His experience as a career educator informs his songcraft, giving him the mindset and skills to ensure that everytime he picks up a guitar he elevates and spotlights the unique gifts of his fellow musicians in each song, and on each stage.

Devon Teran Thank you for being with us on WMM.

Devon Teran & Aaron Mitchum are co-founders of the band Timbers, formed in 2013, who will premiere a new song today and play LIVE in our 90.1 FM Studios. The Timbers are made up of: Aaron Mitchum on vocals & guitars, Devon Teran on guitar & pedal steel, Riley Taylor on bass & BGV, Nathan Lewis on drums, and Jiliann De Jong on vocals.

Timbers formed 9 years ago and have release three EP releases, Devon Teran & Aaron Mitchum how did you all meet and why did you form a band?

Timbers are: Aaron Mitchum on vocals & guitars, Devon Teran on guitar & pedal steel, Riley Taylor on bass & BGV, Nathan Lewis on drums, cover art, Jilliann De Jong on vocals.

Over the course of this band the two of you have started families, became fathers, have balanced family life and your careers in music with your careers in the 9 to five workplace. Music has remained a constant passion for you both.

Devon write’s about growing up in Wichita, Kansas. The son of a Cuban refugee father and an Appalachian German mother. Teran was always aware that he didn’t fit into the easy boxes. He would flatpick Guantanamera for his Abuela while she half harmonized memories of home. The spirit of mournful nostalgia and a dash of Appalachian ingenuity infuse his sound with both a quivering longing and ephemeral immediacy.

New Timbers new single was this recorded with Duane Trower at Weights and Measures Sound Lab.

  1. David Bowie – “You’re aware of a deeper existence…”
    from: Moonage Daydream – A Brett Morgen Film / Parlophone / September 16, 2022
[Moonage Daydream – A Brett Morgen Film is the soundtrack to the 2022 documentary film Moonage Daydream based on the life of English singer-songwriter David Bowie. It was released digitally on September 16, 2022 by Rhino Entertainment and Parlophone Records, preceded by a two-disc CD release on November 18, 2022 and a three-disc vinyl edition, set for later release in 2023. // The album was announced on August 25 2022, to accompany the film, that contained previously unreleased live singles, tracks cut from the album, film-specific remixes of Bowie’s tracks, orchestral performances and interview excerpts and monologues from Bowie himself. A single from the album – the remixed version of the song “Modern Love” – released on the same date. Bowie’s official website, stated it as “This version is a unique mix starting with the isolated piano motif from the track, building up into the chorus before ending on the a cappella backing vocals offering an insight into the individual elements that create the classic we all know and love”. The film-specific remix of the song “D.J.” was released as the second single on September 9, 2022 // Brett Morgan worked for nearly 18 months to design the accompanying soundtrack, with the sound design team — re-recording mixers Paul Massey and David Giammarco, sound and music editor John Warhurst, supervising sound editor Nina Hartstone — working with him. On designing the film’s music, Massey mashed up “a lot of music that wasn’t designed to go together into some amazing pieces of work. And the sound design is fully integrated into that. The soundtrack is like a huge dissolve, from the very beginning of the film until the end.” // At the Cannes Film Festival premiere on May 2022, Carey Matthew of Deadline Hollywood called it as “thundering soundtrack that literally shakes the seats”. Kenji Fujishima of Slant Magazine wrote “Though Bowie’s music dominates the soundtrack (with his songs remixed for maximum heart-thumping arena-rock impact), the documentary also includes music inspired by the man’s art, including snippets from the Philip Glass symphonies based on Bowie’s Low and Heroes albums.” Max Bell of Classic Rock wrote “If it’s axiomatic that great artistic careers build to a form of crescendo then this double CD, the official soundtrack to Brett Morgen’s anticipated documentary on the musical odyssey of David Bowie, meets that criterion. Morgen’s work on Crossfire Hurricane, for the Rolling Stones, and Kurt Cobain: Montage Of Heck, persuaded Bowie’s estate to give him carte blanche on over fifty years of material, utilising sonic enhancement, mixes that veer from the sublime to the ridiculously sublime, and a spoken word narrative of sorts that threads the meaning of time, death and faith.” The album received a nomination for Best Soundtrack at the St. Louis Gateway Film Critics Association Awards 2022.]

  1. David Bowie – “Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide (Live Moonage Daydream Edit)”
    from: Moonage Daydream – A Brett Morgen Film / Parlophone / September 16, 2022
[“Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide” is a song by English singer-songwriter David Bowie, originally released as the closing track on the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars on June 16, 1972. Co-produced by Ken Scott, Bowie recorded it with his backing band the Spiders from Mars – comprising Mick Ronson, Trevor Bolder and Mick Woodmansey. It detailed Ziggy’s final collapse like an old, washed-up rock star and, as such, was also the closing number of the Ziggy Stardust live show. In April 1974 RCA issued it as a single. // Bowie saw the song in terms of the French chanson tradition, while biographer David Buckley has described both “Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide” and the album’s opening track “Five Years” as “more like avant-garde show songs than actual rock songs”. Critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine similarly found it to have “a grand sense of staged drama previously unheard of in rock & roll”. // Although Bowie has suggested Baudelaire as his source, the lyrics “Time takes a cigarette…” are somewhat similar to the poem “Chants Andalous” by Manuel Machado: “Life is a cigarette / Cinder, ash and fire / Some smoke it in a hurry / Others savour it”.[1] The exhortation “Oh no, love, you’re not alone” references the Jacques Brel song “You’re Not Alone” (“Jef”) that appeared in the musical Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris. Bowie performed Brel’s “My Death” during some Ziggy Stardust live shows, and performed “Amsterdam” live on the BBC. // In 2003 Bowie described the James Brown songs ‘Try Me’ and ‘Lost Someone’ as “loose inspiration” for the song. // “Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide”, recorded on February 4, 1972, was one of the last songs recorded for Ziggy Stardust, along with “Suffragette City”, which would immediately precede it in the album track listing, and “Starman”, soon to be issued as a single. As the final song on the album and climax to the Ziggy Stardust live shows throughout 1972–73, it soon became a slogan, appearing on many fans’ jackets. // In April 1974 RCA, impatient for new material and having already rush-released “Rebel Rebel” from the Diamond Dogs sessions, arbitrarily picked the song for single release. Two years old, and already in the possession of most Bowie fans through Ziggy Stardust, its release has been labelled simply a “dosh-catching exercise”. It stalled at No. 22 in the UK charts – Bowie’s first RCA single to miss the British Top 20 since “Changes” in January 1972. According to Acclaimed Music, it is the 2,141st most celebrated song in popular music history. //Bob Dylan played the song on the “Death and Taxes” episode of Season 1 of his Theme Time Radio Hour show in 2007. Afterwards Dylan recalled how Bowie “told everyone he was going to retire after the Ziggy Stardust Tour” then added, “I remember that. I told him not to do it”.]

Michelle Bacon, thanks for being with us on Wednesday MidDay Medley

Also joining us is… Calvin Arsenia one of our most frequent guests, who first appeared on WMM on July 25, 2012. Today marks his 20th appearance! KC Magazine has hailed Calvin as ‘equal parts opera, symphony, musical theatre, rock show, all built around its creator: a charismatic 6-foot-7-inch harpist with a 3 and ½ octave range, natural stage command and knack for gilding gold and painting lilies.’ Born in Orlando, Florida, Calvin’s creative journey began when he moved to Olathe, Kansas, teaching himself the guitar, piano, banjo. He learned his signature instrument, the harp, at the age of 20. His passion for stretching the boundaries of musical expression saw him transform a trip to Edinburgh, Scotland’s Fringe Festival early in his career into a life-changing music mission, with an Edinburgh church offering him a role as musical liaison between the church and the city that would change his life. Two years and 300 shows later, Calvin returned to KC reborn as a humanistic songwriter / performer where at 24 he released his EP, Moments, in 2014, and his EP Prose in 2015, and his Folk Alliance exclusive EP Catastrophe in 2016. On February 14, 2017 Calvin released his critically acclaimed full length debut, Catastrophe, with a live show at recordBar in November 2016 that involved a company of 50 people, dancers, stilt walkers. [Soundtrack by Calvin Arsenia and Mike Dillon for The West 18th Street Fashion Show’s 20th year as a feature-length film. Honig wrote, “We did this during a pandemic and a cultural revolution. I am not sure where else or how else this could happen at this moment in history.” Calvin Arsenia had recently been emotionally and greatly moved by the area and national Black Lives Matter Movement. His own research into his own family revealed that Calvin’s great, great, great grandmother Alice Gilliam Scott, was a former slave who lived to observe her 100th birthday as noted by a regional newspaper. In the summer of 2020 Calvin wrote “Revelation” an unreleased track inspired by Black Lives Matter. Calvin premiered the song on WMM on August 12, 2020. 1. David Bowie – “Let me tell you one thing…”
    from: Moonage Daydream – A Brett Morgen Film / Parlophone / September 16, 2022
The soundtrack is like a huge dissolve, from the very beginning of the film until the end.”]
  1. David Bowie – “Starman (Original Single Mix) [2015 Remaster]
    from: Moonage Daydream – A Brett Morgen Film / Parlophone / September 16, 2022
[Moonage Daydream – A Brett Morgen Film is the soundtrack to the 2022 documentary film Moonage Daydream based on the life of English singer-songwriter David Bowie. It was released digitally on September 16, 2022 by Rhino Entertainment and Parlophone Records, preceded by a two-disc CD release on November 18, 2022 and a three-disc vinyl edition, set for later release in 2023. // “Starman” is a song by English musician David Bowie. It was released on 28 April 1972 by RCA Records as the lead single of his fifth studio album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Co-produced by Ken Scott, Bowie recorded the song on 4 February 1972 at Trident Studios in London with his backing band known as the Spiders from Mars – comprising guitarist Mick Ronson, bassist Trevor Bolder and drummer Mick Woodmansey. The song was a late addition to the album, written as a direct response to RCA’s request for a single; it replaced the Chuck Berry cover “Round and Round” on the album. The lyrics describe Ziggy Stardust bringing a message of hope to Earth’s youth through the radio, salvation by an alien ‘Starman’. The chorus is inspired by “Over the Rainbow”, sung by Judy Garland, while other influences include T. Rex and the Supremes.// Upon release, “Starman” sold favorably and earned positive reviews. Following Bowie’s performance of the song on the BBC television program Top of the Pops, the song reached number 10 on the UK Singles Chart and helped propel the album to number five. It was his first major hit since “Space Oddity” three years earlier. The performance made Bowie a star and was watched by a large audience, including many future musicians, who were all impacted by it; these included Boy George, Bono, Robert Smith and Ian McCulloch. Retrospectively, the song is considered by music critics as one of Bowie’s finest. // “Starman” was released as the lead single of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars on 28 April 1972 by RCA Records (as RCA 2199) with “Suffragette City” as the B-side. According to Cann, the single was released in the US on 20 May with a slight variant from the UK single: Bowie’s spoken intro was edited out and “to comply with the preferred duration among American radio stations,” the song was shortened by ten seconds. The US single was released in both mono and stereo formats. The single originally featured a “loud mix” of the “morse-code” piano-and-guitar section between the verse and the chorus. This single mix appeared on the original UK album, but not on other vinyl editions of the album internationally, in which the “morse-code” section was lower in the mix. The single mix appeared on the 1980 compilation album The Best of Bowie, but ChangesTwoBowie (1981) and subsequent compilations featured the more subdued mix, until the “loud mix” finally reappeared on Nothing Has Changed (2014) and on Re:Call 1 as part of the 2015 box set Five Years (1969–1973). // “Starman” was sequenced as the fourth track on the album, between “Moonage Daydream” and “It Ain’t Easy”, released on 16 June 1972. It was a late addition to the album, replacing a cover of American singer-songwriter Chuck Berry’s “Round and Round”. According to Rob Sheffield, “Round and Round” would have fit the concept of the album but it was excessive, as side two featured multiple Berry-style tracks. Pegg also commented: “It’s extraordinary to consider that one of Bowie’s definitive songs replaced a Chuck Berry cover almost as an afterthought.” // From a commercial point of view, “Starman” was a milestone in Bowie’s career: it was his first hit since “Space Oddity” three years before. NME critics Roy Carr and Charles Shaar Murray reported that “many thought it was his first record since ‘Space Oddity'”, and assumed that it was a sequel to the earlier single. Pegg states that due to this assumption, the title and acoustic intro might have given the suggestion that Bowie had “only one song in his playbook”, but the first lyric changes that. While “Space Oddity” was a pure “science-fiction story”, “Starman” is less that and more of a “self-aggrandizing announcement that there’s a new star in town.” // The single initially sold steadily rather than spectacularly but earned many positive reviews. BBC broadcaster John Peel, in his Disc & Music Echo column wrote: “Now this is magnificent – quite superb. “David Bowie is, with Kevin Ayers, the most important, under-acknowledged innovator in contemporary popular music in Britain and if this record is overlooked it will be nothing less than stark tragedy.” Chris Welch of Melody Maker predicted: “[Bowie] is taking longer than most to become a superstar, but he should catch up with Rod and Marc soon.” On 15 June, Bowie and the Spiders from Mars performed “Starman” on the Granada children’s music programme Lift Off with Ayshea, which was presented by Ayshea Brough, whom Bowie had met as a performer in 1969. Joined by Nicky Graham on keyboards, according to Pegg, they performed against a “backdrop of coloured stars”; Woodmansey had at this point not “peroxided” his hair. The performance was broadcast on 21 June in a “post-school” time slot, where it was witnessed by thousands of British children. On 24 June, “Starman” rose to number 49 on the UK Singles Chart and by 1 July, number 41, earning Bowie an invitation to perform on the BBC television programme Top of the Pops. // A man with red hair singing into a microphone and pointing directly at the camera During his performance of “Starman” on Top of the Pops, Bowie pointed directly at the camera when singing the lyric “I had to phone someone so I picked on you ooh ooh”. David Hepworth of The Guardian calls this the exact moment in which Bowie became a star. // On July 5. 1972, Bowie, the Spiders and Graham recorded a performance of “Starman” for Top of the Pops, which was broadcast on BBC One the next night. The group mimed to a pre-recorded backing track, four takes of which were recorded on 29 June, and sang live as per Musicians Union rules. Bowie appeared in a brightly-coloured rainbow jumpsuit, “shocking” red hair and astronaut boots while the Spiders wore blue, pink, scarlet and gold velvet attire. During the performance, Bowie was relaxed and confident and wrapped his arm around Ronson’s shoulder, revealing his white-coloured fingernails and, in Cann’s words, “driving home the ambiguous glamour of the Ziggy persona.” He altered the line “Some cat was laying down some rock ‘n’ roll” to “Some cat was laying down some get-it-on rock ‘n’ roll” as a tribute to Bolan. Upon singing the line “I had to phone someone so I picked on you ooh ooh”, Bowie pointed at the camera, engaging the audience directly, which one fan recalled, “It was as if Bowie actually singled me out…a chosen one…it was almost a religious experience.”Transmitted the following day, the three minute performance launched Bowie to stardom.According to author David Buckley, “Many fans date their conversion to all things Bowie to this Top of the Pops appearance”. It embedded Ziggy Stardust in the nation’s consciousness, helping push “Starman” to number 10 and the album, released the previous month, to number five. The “Starman” single remained in the UK charts for 11 weeks. In the United States, the single peaked at number 65 on the Billboard Hot 100 in August 1972. // There’s no doubt that Bowie’s appearance on Top of the Pops was a pivotal moment in British musical history. Like the Sex Pistols at the Lesser Free Trade Hall in Manchester in ’76, his performance lit the touchpaper for thousands of kids who up till then had struggled to find a catalyst in their lives. – BBC radio broadcaster Marc Riley, reflecting on the performance’s impact. // The performance was watched by a large audience, including many English musicians before they became famous, including Boy George, Adam Ant, Mick Jones of the Clash, Gary Kemp of Spandau Ballet, Morrissey and Johnny Marr of the Smiths, Siouxsie Sioux of Siouxsie and the Banshees, John Taylor and Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran, Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode, and Noel Gallagher of Oasis. Many musicians and groups have recalled seeing the performance and reflected on how it affected their lives. The English gothic rock band Bauhaus recalled that seeing Bowie’s performance on Top of the Pops was “a significant and profound turning point in their lives”. The band thereafter idolised Bowie and subsequently covered “Ziggy Stardust” in 1982. Reflecting on Bowie’s impact on music in 2003, Robert Smith of the Cure said: “He was blatantly different, and everyone of my age remembers the time he played ‘Starman’ on Top of the Pops.” Bono of the Irish rock band U2 told Rolling Stone in 2010: “The first time I saw [Bowie] was singing ‘Starman’ on television. It was like a creature falling from the sky. Americans put a man on the moon. We had our own British guy from space – with an Irish mother.” English singer-songwriter Gary Numan, who saw the performance when he was 15 years old, said: “I think it stands as one of the pivotal moments of modern music, or, if not music, certainly a pivotal moment in show business. It must have taken extraordinary courage and/or a monumental amount of self-belief. To say it stood out is an epic understatement. Even as a hardcore T. Rex fan I knew it was special.” Ian McCulloch of the English rock band Echo & the Bunnymen said in 2007: “As soon as I heard ‘Starman’ and saw him on Top of the Pops, I was hooked. I seem to remember me being the first to say it, and then there was a host of other people saying how the Top of the Pops performance changed their lives.” Elton John said: “It was so different, it was like Wow. No one had ever seen anything like that before”. // The Top of the Pops performance was included on the DVD version of Best of Bowie in 2002. In addition to the TV performances, Bowie played the song for radio listeners on the BBC’s Johnny Walker Lunchtime Show on 22 May 1972. This performance was broadcast in early June 1972 and eventually released on Bowie at the Beeb in 2000.]

10:42 – Interview with Jaclyn Bell with Josh Bell, Jaclyn Bell, Dillon Whitney, Justyn Renkoski, and Marshall Taylor,

Jaclyn Bell joins us, with her band, to premiere the single “Run This Town” on KKFI 90.1.

Jaclyn Bell has been in music her whole life. From singing competitions in things like 4H when she was younger, to singing in churches, and singing background vocals on a few albums. She has been writing songs ever since I was in my teens. She attended a music recording internship with Josh and we got a lot of really good experience from everything to song composition to audio engineering. During the lockdowns she added being a vocal for hire to my portfolio. She was working with a lot of DJ’s and producers in Europe and being featured on quite a few of their singles. Jaclyn has known most of the guys in her band for most of her life and has been playing music with all of them in different capacities for over ten years! Jaclyn loves songwriting and doing this with the most amazing musicians she knows. You can find Jaclyn @jaclynbellmusic

Jaclyn Ball thanks for being with us on Wednesday MidDay Medley

Also joining us, are members of Jaclyn’s band: Marshall Taylor, Justyn Renkoski, Dillon Whitney, Josh Bell

Jaclyn has trained in the studio and on stages across the nation. Her first EP, MEMORIES was recorded on Music Row in Nashville in 2018. Wanting to return to her roots, she recorded her first studio album, WANNA BE MINE in Kansas City and released it in 2019. Her original songs, “Am I the One,” “History,” and “Wanna Be Mine” hav been played on radio stations across the U.S. and the U.K. In her songwriting, she draws from unique experiences, relationships, and life events that have impacted her deeply. Jaclyn Bell’s stage experience and authentic style is captivating audiences around the region.

In an interview with Johnson County Library Jaclyn explained the she has “been a songwriter since I was about 17.” She also say, “For my songwriting process it’s a bit different. It’s like I catch a writing bug I could go months without writing songs and then once I feel inspired, I could write seven songs in three days. With editing, each song is different. Some songs I write once and don’t change anything about it. Others […] take four or five different editing sessions to get it perfect. Each song is a different art piece so doing it all the same doesn’t really make sense to me. I think that each one deserves its own unique attention and style.”

Jaclyn Bell, Marshall Taylor, Justyn Renkoski, Dillon Whitney, Josh Bell, thanks for being with on WMM.

  1. Christena Graves – “Give Me A Minute”
from: Finding My Footing / Christena Graves / February 11, 2021
[Christena Graves writes songs in order to make sense of her world. Her lyrics are a mixture of a heartfelt acknowledgment of the pain and suffering in life, balanced by the steadying force of committed relationships. Growing up in a coastal area of western Michigan, Christena draws from her deep connection with the natural world to help frame the difficulty of the human emotional landscape. “Nature brings focus for me. I rely on it to color my lyrics.” She found her musical beginning learning to sing harmonies with her older brothers and sisters. Music was an important part of her family and they would often sing hymns together. She fondly remembers the day her oldest brother sat her on the kitchen counter and taught her to sing harmony to Jingle Bells. It was a moment that gave fuel to her love of singing. // After leaving Michigan to attend college in Missouri, she met her husband Brandon and joined the band Waterdeep as the keyboard player. After touring for several years, she stepped away from the band to raise their children. Songwriting became a release to help process the struggles of life. Eventually, she was writing songs for her church community and helping lead music on Sunday mornings. Once the kids were old enough, Christena and Brandon decided to form a new project and return to making music in a bigger way. // 2019 marked the beginning of the Christena Graves Band and the ground work being laid for her return to the music industry. In mid 2020 Greg Lafollette, a long time musical friend, moved back to KC from Nashville where he had built a successful career as an artist and producer. Greg offered his help to record a collections of songs that have become her new record. The album is titled, Finding My Footing. A nod to the difficulty of reengaging in a music business that has changed dramatically over the last 20 years but also a humble acceptance that life can be hard at times but it is important to keep moving forward. // The release of Finding My Footing marks her first full length solo album since 1996 and her first project ever as a band leader. The songs are stories of loss, fear, struggle, and joy. “This project ended up being much more than just making a good record. I spent a lot of time in self reflection—maybe I should call it a mid-life moment. I questioned my ability and worth as an artist, as a woman, and a human. It has been difficult to go through but I am learning so much about myself. I am happy with where I am and I am proud of what I’ve said with this album.” More info at: http://www.christenagravesmusic.com] [Christena Graves was guest on WMM on February 10, and on July 7, 2021.]
