Wednesday MidDay Medley plays music from the 29th Annual Folk Alliance International. Today we feature music from artists participating in the 29th Annual Folk Alliance International Conference, in Kansas City at the Westin Crown Center, starting today and going throughout the weekend ending with The Kansas City Folk Fest on Sunday, February 19. 2. Ani DiFranco – “Play God”

[“Play God” is the first single and one of only three confirmed songs on the including “Deferred Gratification”, and “Binary” to be part of DiFranco’s twentieth studio album that will be released in May 2017. Ani DiFranco was born Angela Maria DiFranco on September 23, 1970. She is an American singer, multi-instrumentalist, poet, songwriter and businesswoman. She has released more than 20 albums and is a feminist icon. Although DiFranco’s music has been classified as folk rock and alternative rock she has added punk, funk, hip hop and jazz influences. DiFranco created her own record label, Righteous Babe, giving her significant creative freedom. DiFranco supports many social and political movements by performing benefit concerts, appearing on benefit albums and speaking at rallies. Through the Righteous Babe Foundation DiFranco has backed grassroots cultural and political organizations supporting causes including abortion rights to gay visibility. She counts famed American folk singer and songwriter Pete Seeger among her mentors.]

We have one exception to our Folk Alliance International themed show today, and that is our next song from, Nick Carswell & Katlyn Conroy.

Nick Carswell is in the bands: Carswell and Hope, and Pink Royal. Katlyn Conroy is the genius behind La Guerre, one of our most played and favorite musical entities of the Lawrence – Kansas City music scene. Last year in November, Katlyn and Nick and friends were part of a musical tribute to Damien Rice, called And So It Is… which included a performance of the 2002 album”O” in it’s entirety. This was a benefit for the Kansas City Irish Center at Drexel Hall. Nick shared this track with us to play today.

The Jellyman’s Daughter, are from Edinburgh, Scotland. Graham Coe on cello & vocals, and Emily Kelly on vocals, mandolin, & guitar join us to play LIVE in our 90.1 FM Studios. The Jellyman’s Daughter released their critically acclaimed debut full length on September 24, 2014. Since then they’ve toured Germany, The Netherlands, and Denmark and played last year’s Folk Alliance International Conference. The duo toured Canada last September, while also working on new songs for their second album they will be releasing this year. Calvin Arsenia premiered these songs in a live show at recordbar last November. Since Calvin Arsenia came home to KC after living in Edinburgh, Scotland, he has released his EP, Moments, in 2014, and his EP Prose in 2015, and his Folk Alliance exclusive EP Catastrophe in 2016.

Emily and Graham strive for originality in their songwriting, incorporating cello, guitar and mandolin in their songs. The duo share a unique affinity in their vocal harmonies, while Graham’s cello is “percussive as a drum, grounded as a bass or sweet as a fiddle” (Alan Morrison, The Herald)

After meeting in the inspiring setting of Edinburgh, Emily & Graham found a love for playing music with each other, staying up into the wee hours making home recordings.

Busking in the streets of their home city during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, they created quite an impact when they made their debut at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections festival. When in-demand playing partners Emily Kelly and Graham Coe released their full-length album, it won a huge amount of radio exposure, and reviewers unanimously agreed that something totally appealing had come on to the scene. The Sunday Herald (Scotland) made it one of their Top Albums of The Year while Maverick magazine described them as “fascinating” and said they demonstrated “originality by the bucket-load”. “Heartily recommended” by Folking.com, Acoustic magazine told readers they “kick up a heck of a storm,” while The Daily Express called the duo “a match made in heaven”.

The Jellyman’s Daughter started 2015 as they meant to go on, winning even more praise following bigger­-exposure live performances, including a nomination for Best Acoustic Act in the Scottish Alternative Music Awards, and spreading their wings much further afield, spending a month gigging around Germany, The Netherlands and Denmark. After a successful appearance at Folk Alliance International in Kansas City early in the year, Emily and Graham spent 2016 gigging extensively, including a tour of Canada in September, while working away at new songs for their second album. In 2017 they are focusing on putting the finishing touches on the substance of the second album.

[Robyn Rowan Hitchcock was born March 3, 1953. He is an English singer-songwriter and guitarist. While primarily a vocalist and guitarist, he also plays harmonica, piano, and bass guitar. After reaching prominence in the late 1970s with The Soft Boys, Hitchcock launched a prolific solo career. His musical and lyrical styles have been influenced by the likes of Bob Dylan, John Lennon, and Syd Barrett. Hitchcock’s lyrics tend to include surrealism, comedic elements, characterizations of English eccentrics, and melancholy depictions of everyday life.
