Joseph Arthur for the most part writes songs from guitar, however for this recording the whole album was written at a piano, a Steinway Vertegrande from 1912, that Joseph had recently acquired. The instrument was so full of character and history, and owned by just one family until it ended up in his industrial studio space in Red Hook, Brooklyn, it became a potent source of inspiration.]

[Since Calvin Arsenia came home to KC after living in Edinburgh, Scotland, he has released his EP, Moments, in 2014, and his EP Prose in 2015, and his Folk Alliance exclusive EP Catastrophe in 2016. He has played all over town, including showcases at Folk Alliance International, Kansas City Fringe Fest, The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, and collaborations with bands like My Brothers and Sisters. Standing at 6 foot 5 inches, Arsenia’s powerful vocals span a 3.5 octave range, while playing piano, bango, guitar and harp. Calvin Arsenia is getting ready to release a new album in the fall. Calvin teaches music to elementary students. Calvin is also a graduate of Artist INC professional development program for artists in the Kansas City metro area and across the Mid-America Arts Alliance five state region. ]

Yes You Are lead singer Kianna Alarid was also lead singer and bassist for the critical acclaimed band, Tilly and the Wall, who released 4 albums on Saddle Creek Records, toured the world, and appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman. After Tilly and the Wall ended, Yes You Are was formed in 2014. This past summer they toured nationally with Neon Trees and released their first music video. 10:30 – Interview with Crystal Clayton

Kansas City based singer/songwriter, Crystal Clayton has been performing since she was 7 years old. She wrote her first song when she was 15. Versatile in multiple genres of music Crystal has performed in Musical Theatre for The New Theatre in Overland Park and for The Lyric Opera of Kansas City, as well as singing on tracks for hip hop artists Prozak and Ces Cru who are part of Tech N9ne’s label, Strange Music. Finding her own sound in an evergrowing pool of area singer songwriters, Crystal Clayton has just released her debut EP on June 3. She reports that has a new band that will make their live performance debut together at The Plaza Art Fair, INK Live! Stage, on Saturday, September 24, at 11:00 am.

Crystal originally recorded her songs using protools and then the songs were recorded and mastered at Chapman Recording Studios.

Crystal grew up in Blue Springs, and graduated from Blue Springs High School in 2011.

Justin Curry runs a company called Vimwave, and he will be serving as technical director and band leader of Crystal’s live shows.

Legendary Kansas City Singer Songwriter – Howard Iceberg is one of the most prolific and poetic songwriters of the Kansas City music scene. He has written hundreds, possibly thousands of songs. Howard has done all of this while also leading a distinguished career as an immigration attorney, and he has donated much of his time and music to valuable projects that serve our community. Howard Iceberg began performing in coffeehouses in the late 1970s with fellow area independent songwriters Scott Hrabko and Iris DeMent. Over the past three to four decades he has released countless CDs, and recorded multiple collections of songs. In 2011, Howard Iceberg & The Titanics released a seven CD, box set, of 106 new songs, all instant classics. In 2014 he shared with us 13 songs in a collection called Spring 2014, and last year on his birthday May 9, 2015 he released, Smooth Sailing which included 13 new songs, captured on CD, from the many songs he has written and recorded in his ongoing recording project with musician and producer Pat Tomek.

Howard Iceberg joined us to talk about his new double album (2 CD Set) recording of 26 new tracks called, “Kansas City Songs.” Howard Iceberg will play a CD Release Show at The Brick, 1727 McGee, KCMO, on Monday, September 26, at 6:00 to 9:00, with the Rural Grit Happy Hour show. All proceeds from Howard’s release will benefit Rural Grit for upgrades to their equipment.

The 26 new songs written by Howard Iceberg. 17 of these songs were recorded by Phil Wade (of The Wilders) at his Alluvial Fan Studios, over a three day period, with a core group of musicians that included: Howard Iceberg, Betse Ellis, Clarke Wyatt, Chad Brothers, Brett Hodges, Chad Rex, and Phil Wade. The group ate together and spent 3 intense days recording these songs

Nine other songs were recorded by Pat Tomek at Largely Studios.

All songs were mixed by Pat Tomek at Largely Studios.

Pat Tomek, is a longtime member of The Titanics, drummer and member of legendary band The Rainmakers, and drummer in the band Deco Auto. Pat Tomek is also a recording engineer and producer who has worked with countless area bands and musicians and has been a primary partner and caretaker in the recording and production of Howard’s recording project of songs.

The Rural Grit Happy Hour is a weekly show that begins with an opn mic and then features an individual performer.

Howard first started performing at open mic shows. He first played open mic events at The Point.

For his new album, Kansas City Songs, Howard was inspired to create songs in the style of old country songs, honky tonk, country waltzes.

Howard Iceberg, has lived in The West Side neighborhood, and worked as an immigration attorney for 30+ years. We talked with Howard about the neighborhood’s history as a home for immigrant workers and their families, from Latino Americans, to the earlier years of Irish Americans. We talked with Howard about the current political presidential race and how some candidates are appealing to the absolute worst fears in voters.

We also talked with Howard about his 30+ year perspective on KC’s music scene and his observations of the changes in the scene. Howard said that he has observed the biggest changes starting 8 years ago, with a new energy in the music community. Howard said that if Kansas City was located in Brooklyn, everybody would know about these bands. We talked with Howard about the diversity in genre and styles that exist in Kansas City.
