[28 year old Meilyr Jones is originally from Aberystwyth, Wales. He was part of the Welsh band, Race Horses. He went to the Royal Academy of Music where he studied the tuba, dropped out after three years. His solo career was born from an impromptu but transformative trip to Rome after the end of both his band Race Horses, and his relationship. When Meilyr returned to London he began recording solo, exploring new ways of working. Incredibly, he managed to assemble a 30-strong orchestra “out of friends, and friends of friends of friends. In the same way that if you were to start a pop band.” The idea was to do it like a Frank Sinatra session with everyone in the same room and record it all live, so for a single day they all gathered at a recording studio in South London, with the producer Iwan Morgan and the engineer Jimmy Robertson.]

[Previously-unreleased music with new production by Mavis Staples and Jeff Tweedy of Wilco. The album features 10 songs, originally recorded and produced by Pops in 1999, but left unfinished at the time of his death in 2000. The album, which also features newly recorded vocals by Mavis Staples, takes its title directly from the instruction Pops gave to his daughter as the two listened to the unfinished recording before his death: “Don’t lose this.” Mavis didn’t, and in 2014 brought the tapes of her father’s last work to her recent collaborator, Tweedy, for completion. The two had teamed up on Mavis’ recent solo releases, One True Vine and the Grammy-winning You Are Not Alone.]

[12th solo album from musician Bob Mould who was born in Malone, New York, October 16, 1960) is an American musician, principally known for his work as guitarist, vocalist and songwriter for alternative rock bands Hüsker Dü in the 1980s and Sugar in the 1990s. Mould lived in several places, including the Minneapolis-St. Paul area where he then attended Macalester College. There, he formed Hüsker Dü in the late 1979, with drummer/singer Grant Hart and bass guitarist Greg Norton. Hüsker Dü first gained notice as a punk rock group with a series of recordings on the independent label SST Records. In 1986, they signed with a major record label (Warner Bros. Records), but found only modest commercial success. However, they were later often cited as one of the key influences on 1990s alternative rock, including bands such as Nirvana and the Pixies. In the late 1980s, Hüsker Dü broke up acrimoniously amid members’ drug abuse, personal problems, disputes over songwriting credits, musical direction, and the suicide of the band’s manager, David Savoy. After Hüsker Dü broke up in 1988, Mould sequestered himself in a remote farmhouse in Pine City, Minnesota,[11] having quit drinking and drugs, and wrote the songs that would make up his first solo album. Though Mould’s sexual orientation had previously been something of an open secret, he was outed in the early 1990s in an interview in the music magazine Spin; he came to terms with being openly gay, even appearing in the movie Bear Nation, self-identifying as a bear.]

8. Rick Malsick – “Philodendron”

Kansas City based singer songwriter Rick Malsick joins us to share music from his new 10-song release, Philodendron, that he recorded with area musician Evan Smalley. Rick has accumulated a repertoire of more than 100 songs – half of them his own. His previous recordings include: Bottom Feeders Jamboree (2007) and Athena (2009), and We Are the People (2010) by the Herrmannators. His song “Closes Her Eyes” was a medalist in the New Song Showcase at the Walnut Valley Festival, Winfield, KS, in 2007 and “The Christmas Tumbleweed (Ford County, 1935)” was a medalist at Winfield in 2008. For over 5 years Rick has served as host of: Music + Poetry + Art, at the Downtown Neon Gallery, 1921 Truman Road, KCMO.

Philodendron was recorded with area musician Evan Smalley.

Rick Malsick calls himself a singing grant-writer. As he writes in his bio “part of a long, long, line of singers who have day jobs. After all, Jimmy Rodgers was the Singing Brakeman. Gene Autry was the Singing Cowboy. Mario Lanza was the Singing Truck Driver.”

Rick writes that he tries “to bring an artist’s creativity to my consulting business and a businessman’s customer service to my music.”

When not writing grants, Rick likes to play guitar. “I’m a fingerpicker, working for years (still working) to develop a jazzy/bluesy/folkie finger style approach to guitar, based on the styles of Merle Travis, Mississippi John Hurt, Chet Atkins, Big Bill Broonzy, Blind Willie McTell and a host of others.”

Rick has accumulated a repertoire of more than 100 songs – half of them his own – that extends back to the Civil War. Lots of American Songbook – Duke, Rodgers & Hart, Gershwins – he loves that stuff. Also some really old songs, Ragtime Cowboy Joe, Carolina in the Morning, Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight .

For the past five years Rick Malsick has hosted a magical gathering of poets and musicians at the Downtown Neon Gallery. These events bring together the most creative voices in Kansas City including the River Cow Orchestra, area poetsm musicians, artists. Over the years 35 bands and solo artists, as well as 62 poets, have crossed the stage.

Martha Gershun, organizes Music + Poetry + Art. Maryfrances Wagner recruits the poets, and Thomas Cobian, is the Neon Warrior, owner of the Downtown Neon Gallery.

Rick Malsick is finishing up work on a new album of songs in the public domain.

The next Music + Poetry + Art, at the Downtown Neon Gallery, 1921 Truman Road, KCMO will be April 29 , featuring spoken word artist Sara Missconception Glass.

[7th album from Piney Gir, also known as Angela Penhaligon, an American musician and singer, born and raised in the Bible Belt of the midwest and the state of Kansas. Growing up, secular music was forbidden to her. As a teenager, she rebelled against this upbringing and went to university where she majored in music with drums then voice as her instruments. In 1998 she relocated to London, England and joined the synth pop band Vic Twenty and released a single on Mute records label Credible Sexy Units and toured the UK and Europe with Erasure. As a solo artist, Piney’s musical style is predominately edgy indie-pop, although she has been described both as a musical “chameleon” and as “the indie Dolly Parton”. Piney is an established figure on the London music scene, and has toured extensively including appearances at Glastonbury festival, South by Southwest and CMJ music festival. She has collaborated with artists including Andy Ramsay of Stereolab, Rob Campanella from The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Eamon Hamilton from the band Brakes and British Sea Power and Simple Kid, and was a member of cult all-girl band The Schla La Las. Her songs have appeared on Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, Hit & Miss, Made in Chelsea, Misfits, Drifters, Waterloo Road, Being Human, Fried, Talking to the Dead, What Remains, Switch and in feature films: Nina Forever, You’re Not You, C’e Chi Dice No and American Girl.]

13. The Dandy Warhols – “Styggo”

[9th studio album by American alternative rock band The Dandy Warholsformed in Portland, Oregon, in 1994 by singer-guitarist Courtney Taylor-Taylor and guitarist Peter Holmström. Keyboardist Zia McCabe and drummer Eric Hedford joined them. Hedford left in 1998 and was replaced by Taylor-Taylor’s cousin Brent DeBoer. The band’s name is a play on the name of American pop artist Andy Warhol.The band gained recognition after they were signed to Capitol Records and released their major label album debut, …The Dandy Warhols Come Down, in 1997. In 2001, the band rose to new levels of fame after their song “Bohemian Like You” enjoyed extensive exposure thanks to its being featured in a Vodafone advertisement. Along with The Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Dandy Warhols were the subjects of the 2004 documentary film Dig!. The film captured a love–hate relationship between both bands, highlighting the interaction of Taylor-Taylor and BJM frontman Anton Newcombe. It was recorded over the course of seven years by filmmaker Ondi Timoner, and won the Documentary Grand Jury Prize at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival.]

14. The Greeting Committee – “Hands Down”

[The Greeting Committee are a KC based indie pop group, formed in 2014 by high school students Addison Sartino on vocals, Brandon Yangmi on guitar, Pierce Turcotte on bass, and Austin Fraser on drums. The quartet attracted the attention of local radio personality Lazlo Geiger who agreed to manage them. Following the release of their debut EP, It’s Not All That Bad, things began to move quickly for the young group and a deal was soon struck with Los Angeles-based label Harvest Records who re-released the EP in October 2015. ~ Timothy Monger]

Andrew Foshee, is an alternative singer-songwriter from Kansas City, MO. He has been writing, recording and performing various incarnations of his ‘bedroom folk’ for over fifteen years now, quietly self-releasing a handful of low key albums that were mostly forged in the confines of a sleepy home studio and have been featured in various TV shows and commercials worldwide. His latest release, “Corvair”, is an ethereal ride through a psychedelic, Americana sunset, with hues of contemporary pop and acute self-reflection that warp and fade into a trash-talking, booze-fueled skyline. It’s also a huge step outside of the home studio, this time (alongside his Gosh Darn Band) leaving Foshee to entrust a handful of talented auxiliary musicians, as well as the expertise of producer and engineer Joel Nanos at his Element Recording Studio.

Andrew Foshee’s music has been described as an “Unholy union between 70’s crooner folk, post-modern country & psychedelic blues-rock.”

Andrew Foshee says of his songs on Corvair, “Most of the lyrics are tongue-in-cheek. You could very well just call it ‘pop music’, however this EP certainly falls within the vein of ‘alt-country’ or simply ‘country music’, which stylistically is how I’ve always kind of imagined both my songs and vocal timbre.”

Andrew has said about his music for Corsair the he “made a conscious decision to really open things up lyrically and start saying, in a more direct way, what’s on my mind, instead of always worrying if it’s ‘poetic’ or if it rhymes. Sometimes I’m lucky though and I achieve both. I am somewhat of a crass, honest, and eternally sarcastic person, so this all bleeds into my most current writings.”
