[Tituss Burgess was born February 21, 1979. He is an American actor and singer. He has appeared in numerous Broadway musicals. He is best known for starring as Titus Andromedon on the Netflix comedy series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (2015–2019), for which he has received four consecutive Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series nominations. Born and raised in Athens, Georgia, he attended Cedar Shoals High School where he was active in the theatre program. He graduated from the University of Georgia with a BA in music. He is openly gay. Burgess made his Broadway debut in the musical Good Vibrations as Eddie in 2005, and then appeared in Jersey Boys in 2005 as Hal Miller. He originated the role of “Sebastian the Crab” in the musical The Little Mermaid in 2007 and went on to the role of Nicely-Nicely Johnson, traditionally played by a white actor, in the revival of Guys and Dolls in 2009. He has also performed in several regional theater productions, including The Wiz and Jesus Christ Superstar. Burgess performed at the “Broadway for Obama” benefit concert held at the State Theatre Center for the Arts in Easton, Pennsylvania on October 20, 2008. He appeared in Season 5 of 30 Rock as D’Fwan, a member of Tracy Jordan’s wife’s entourage. He reprised the role in Season 6. “45” is the first track off Burgess’ first album in seven years, Saint Tituss. Described by the artist as his “deepest and most soul-searching” work to date. He told them.us “… given the political climate, I think it’s time to speak out. I fear for our country. I fear for how our country treats its citizens and I fear for how our citizens treat each other. It’s a larger problem than just legislation. I didn’t know how to respond, so I just started with art.”]

Nan wrote on Facebook about her new EP: “This whole thing started out as an experiment, but I have to say I’m proud as hell with how it turned out. I was just going to record one or maybe two songs. HA HA Welcome to my FIVE SONGER!!! Some songs were written out of heartbreak and some just made me laugh. Just doing this was transformative…stuff was moving around, it was cathartic. I allowed myself to “write bad songs”. I highly recommend doing that because there’s bound to be a gold nugget somewhere in the bunch if you give yourself permission. 3. John Moreland – “Lies I Chose To Believe”

[Tulsa, Oklahoma based singer-songwriter John Moreland was born June 22, 1985 in Longview, Texas. The son of Robert Lloyd Moreland and Connie May, Moreland’s father worked for Sunoco as an electrical engineer, and because of this job the family moved a lot. When he was a baby they moved to Northern Kentucky, across the river from Cincinnati, Ohio. Moreland credits his love for Cincinnati Reds to this time in Kentucky. When Moreland was 10 years old Moreland’s family moved from Boone County, Kentucky to Tulsa, Oklahoma and with the help of his father, started playing the guitar. When he was 12 he played with a kid he went to church with who wrote songs and inspired him to start writing songs “that made sense.” John grew up in a conservative Southern Baptist family. “From the time I was born up until about age 16, my entire worldview and all my opinions were pretty much solely influenced by the evangelical church. All the years since then have sort of been this slow process of figuring out where I stand now that I’m not an impressionable kid anymore. I feel like I’m done with that at this point, but it keeps showing up in songs. I guess that stuff stays in your psyche forever.” His “High on Tulsa Heat” was in our 115 Best Recordings of 2015.]

[A few weeks ago I participated in an LGBTQ Storytelling Night at InterUrban ArtHouse in OP. Along with the stories was music from The Black Creatures, Hadiza., and Isaac Walker of No Such Beast.]

5. Miki P & The Swallowtails – “I Get Lost”

[1st single of new EP from Miki P, with The swallowtails, a follow up to her debut full length album Dome of Swallows from last year. Labeled: “Introspective pop music with lyric-driven folk influences, mixed with collaborative energy & an odd pairing of instruments, Miki P locked in with the Swallowtails create a moment with music written and arranged from the heart.” Miki P started playing guitar in middle school. She taught herself to play the drums, while listening to Mitch Mitchell, Keith Moon and Ringo Starr. As a teen she played drums for various groups including the band American Slim. She wrote songs for their full-length album Irreplaceable released in 2017, followed by a single “Queen of Hearts” released April 11, 2018. She also plays ukulele & piano, teaching herself how to play both the instruments and using them frequently in all projects she is involved in. She was a featured vocalist with The Band That Fel to Earth – Bowie Tribute in January. She has played Boulevardia, Middle of the Map Fest, Royal’s Kaufman Stadium, recordBar, Uptown Theater, Arrowhead Stadium, Nelson Atkins Museum, the Crossroads Music Festival and the SXSW Music Fest.]

He released his debut album, “Caged Bird Sings Songs About Red Beard.” The album was one of WMM’s 118 Best Recordings of 2018. Stephonnewas born and raised in Wyandotte County, Kansas. He has performed in mutiple shows for Late Night Theatre. Stephonne told John Long of Camp Magazine “I was surrounded by records, and my parents always had music on.” He expects to move more toward releasing singles rather than entire albums.]

7. The War and Treaty – “Healing Tide”

[Full Length album debut from Michael Trotter Jr & Tanya Blount-Trotter are from Albion, Michigan. For Michael Trotter Jr., the journey began in 2004, when he arrived in Iraq, an untested soldier stricken by fear and self-doubt. His captain made it his personal mission to see to Trotter’s survival. The unit was encamped in one of Saddam Hussein’s private palaces, and in a forgotten corner in its basement, they found a black upright piano that once belonged to the dictator himself. When Trotter shared the fact he could sing, he was encouraged to teach himself to play piano on that confiscated keyboard. “I wrote my first song after that captain was killed,” Trotter recalls. “I sang it for his memorial in Iraq.” Soon after it became his mission to sing at the memorial services for those that had fallen. For the next three years, he sang songs that brought solace and comfort to the members of his unit. His efforts eventually garnered wider recognition as well. He came in first place in “Military Idol,” the army’s version of “American Idol,” during a competition held in Baumholder, Germany. Following his discharge, he was featured on the Hope Channel program “My Story, My Song.” Then he met Tanya Blount. Blount’s musically influences include Mahalia Jackson, Sister Odette and Aretha Franklin. The two fell in love, got married and used the experiences they had gained to create a new musical collaboration. The couple then secured the services of musicians whose skills add a distinctive sound to The War and Treaty’s blend of roots music, blue grass, folk, gospel and soul. The band’s 2017 EP Down to the River was released July 21, 2017. Recorded in Albion, Michigan, Down to the River boasts a sound that’s both stirring and sensual, driven by joy, determination and an unceasing upward gaze. The music is visceral but never morose, flush with emotion but void of despair… a style that touches on a variety of genres, but never finds itself confined to anyone. The arrangements are uncluttered– harmonies, basslines, guitar and mandolin licks, settle drum patterns and keyboards create an immensely moving soundscape — but the sentiments and emotions are fully realized and soar with a steady, chilling assurance. “The recording process wasn’t like anything I ever experienced,” Tanya recalls. “This EP has allowed me to breathe musically. I feel like all I have wanted to express for the past ten years has come forth with what we’ve done. The combination of heart, soul and the overwhelming amount of love that Michael and I have for one another comes across in this record.“ “I was sitting on the banks of the Euphrates River in Baghdad dreaming about one day being able to play and sing professionally for people all around the world,” Michael reflects. “As we recorded our music, I constantly had flashbacks of those desert dreams. The mission of the Black Archives of Mid-America in Kansas City, Inc. is to collect, preserve and make available to the public materials documenting the social, economic, political and cultural histories of persons of African American descent in the central United States, with particular emphasis in the Kansas City, Missouri region. Black Archives of Mid-America is an educational resource and provides access to its collections for research, exhibition and publication to honor our community heritage and to catalyze public awareness.

History & Founder of the Black Archives

The Black Archives of Mid America, Inc. was founded May 8th, 1974 by Horace M. Peterson III and initially located at 1821 Paseo in the old Paseo Y.M.C.A. building. In 1976, the Black Archives moved to 2033 Vine, old Firehouse No.11. The firehouse, located in Kansas City’s Historic 18th and Vine District, itself is representative of African American history in this region as it was home to the first Black fire company in Kansas City. It was built in 1931 as part of the Work’s Progress Administration period under President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The Black Archives is a non-profit organization that serves the community by offering itself as an educational resource as well as a repository of every facet in African American culture; music, art , theater, education, military, medicine, sports, religion and community affairs. The Black Archives was expressly created to collect and preserve the history of African Americans in the Midwest. Beyond our original emphasis of research and critical examination, the Archives’ traveling exhibits personify the roles of African Americans and their plight to dispel negative images. Our interpretive and educational programs, research services and special projects have received overwhelming community support.

It was Peterson’s dream to see an invigorated 18th & Vine District that showcased the contributions of African Americans. His efforts became reality with the anticipated move of the Black Archives to a larger facility located in the heart of this Historic District. Other projects envisioned by Peterson include the KC Jazz Museum, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and the Gem Theater; all landmarks in the 18th & Vine District.

Events at Black Archives: Law 101 – Legal classes sponsored by Jackson County Bar Association and taught by judges & licensed attorneys. Classes are open to the public with light refreshments.

William & Doris Martin live in Joplin, MO. They wrote a book called Dreams and Adventures The Edwin Hubble Story.

They have created a George Washington Carver Kansas City Spirit Exhibit consisting of 30 giant storyboards detailing Carver’s life when he lived in Kansas City around 1885.

(Mark Manning Full Disclosure: “For 20 years I have served as the coordinator of the KCK Organic Teaching Gardens, a program completely grant funded that serves 1500 students in 4 elementary schools and 3 middle schools in the KCK school district. Included in the exhibit are many many photographs from our KCK Organic Teaching Gardens Doris and William have asked permission to include. With the Teaching Gardens program we conduct over 400 workshops each school year in 24 different classrooms. We are attempting to continue the teaching and legacy of George Washington Carver in our curriculum and workshops.”)

William and Doris discovered our program and our connections to Carver. I was thrilled to see how much of our program is featured in their wonderful and educational exhibit, which will be on display at the George Washington Carver National Monument. This exhibit will also be on display at the Black Archives of Mid America, in August of 2019.

George Washington Carver (1860s – January 5, 1943), was an agricultural scientist & inventor. He promoted alternative crops to cotton and methods to prevent soil depletion.

While a professor at Tuskegee Institute, Carver developed techniques to improve soils depleted by repeated plantings of cotton. He wanted poor farmers to grow alternative crops, such as peanuts and sweet potatoes, as a source of their own food and to improve their quality of life. The most popular of his 44 practical bulletins for farmers contained 105 food recipes using peanuts. Although he spent years developing and promoting numerous products made from peanuts, none became commercially successful.

Apart from his work to improve the lives of farmers, Carver was also a leader in promoting environmentalism. He received numerous honors for his work, including the Spingarn Medal of the NAACP. In an era of very high racial polarization, his fame reached beyond the black community. He was widely praised in the white community for his achievements & talents. In 1941, Time magazine dubbed Carver a “[b]lack Leonardo”.

In 1896, Booker T. Washington, the first principal and president of the Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University), invited Carver to head its Agriculture Department. Carver taught there for 47 years, developing the department into a strong research center and working with two additional college presidents during his tenure. He taught methods of crop rotation, introduced several alternative cash crops for farmers that would also improve the soil of areas heavily cultivated in cotton, initiated research into crop products, and taught generations of black students farming techniques for self-sufficiency.

Carver designed a mobile classroom to take education out to farmers. He called it a “Jesup wagon” after the New York financier and philanthropist Morris Ketchum Jesup, who provided funding to support the program.

To recruit Carver to Tuskegee, Washington gave him an above average salary and two rooms for his personal use, although both concessions were resented by some other faculty. Because he had earned a master’s in a scientific field from a “white” institution, some faculty perceived him as arrogant. Unmarried faculty members normally had to share rooms, with two to a room, in the spartan early days of the institute.

From 1915 to 1923, Carver concentrated on researching and experimenting with new uses for peanuts, sweet potatoes, soybeans, pecans, and other crops, as well as having his assistants research and compile existing uses. This work, and especially his speaking to a national conference of the Peanut Growers Association in 1920 and in testimony before Congress in 1921 to support passage of a tariff on imported peanuts, brought him wide publicity and increasing renown. In these years, he became one of the most well-known African Americans of his time.

3. Ivory Blue – “Midas Touch”

[Singer, songwriter, rock & roller, Ivory Blue was born in 1986 in Peoria Illinois, as Devin James Miclettet. Ivory’s birth mother put them up for adoption at the age of four. Ivory speaks about how it was difficult to find trust in people offering their home to someone denied of it for so long, Ivory had lived with eight different families, before running away at 15, moving from Indiana to Oklahoma and eventually ending up in Seattle. In 2011, after a friend sent a plane ticket, Ivory landed in the Kansas City area, and became a part of new family where they were able to have solid ground and over the past several years has been performing in singer-songwriter showcases and in June 2015 Ivory released their debut EP, Ready Get Set.]

Shaun Crowley is a classically trained guitarist, and has studied at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory. Shaun is part of the band Momma’s Boy and is a co-founder of Manor Records, a music label that grew out of Manor Fest, the first festival sized “house show” Shaun and friends produced in their basement featuring 12 bands.

Peter Beatty is Shaun’s bandmate in Momma’s Boy. They have been playing together since they were in Rev Gusto with Quinn Hernandez and Jerry & Sam Frederick. All were friends while they were in high school at Saint James Academy. Peter studied at University of Kansas and along with Momma’s Boy Peter has also recently recently release his solo project R.I.Peter.

[Paul Cherewick, aka Paul Cherry, came up during Chicago’s garage rock golden age in 2014. Despite being in the thick of the DIY scene with bands such as Twin Peaks and The Lemons, Paul has abandoned the all too familiar lo-fi rock sound of his first EP, “On Top”. The Cherry has completely reinvented himself and spent the last 2 years returning to his jazz roots on this upcoming LP, “Flavour”. Paul Cherry crafts melodies on Flavour that sit at the intersection of 1970s yacht rock and Ariel Pink’s lo-fi dream pop. Lyrically, Paul touches on millennial culture with references to texting and social media, giving a modern light-hearted twist to age old old themes of love lost, missed connections and polar political climates.]

[Fayetteville, Arkansas based band The Phlegms is one of the most exciting bands to emerge from the local punk scene in the last few years. The band (Avery Lee, Grant Williams, Ethan Nash, and Peter McKitrick) is everything you want a punk band to be: sonically dynamic, lyrically powerful, and impossible to ignore. They’ve been the band to see at Backspace for a while now, and have shared the stage with heavyweights Protomartyr, and Shame. The band recently released a 6-song EP called Smile – available on Bandcamp, Spotify, and on cassette via Tape Dad. They were also awarded free recording time at East Hall Recording as part of the studio’s 15th Anniversary celebration.]

17. Shy Boys – “Dim The Light”

[New single release and follow up to the band’s second album and Polyvinyl debut, Bell House. Shy Boys line-up consists of brothers Collin Rausch and Kyle Rausch, Konnor Ervin, Kyle Little and Ross Brown. The group formed shortly after the trio became roommates in 2012. Kyle Rausch and Konnor Ervin were already band mates in the indie-pop band The ACBs and Collin had been playing for years in the Kansas City area in various bands. The three shared a love for 1960s era pop rock and soon started writing their own music. In 2014 they released the self-titled Shy Boys on High Dive Records. The album received generally positive reviews and the single “Bully Fight” was featured on Spin.com. In June 2014 the band recorded and released two more singles and one of them, “Life Is Peachy,” was featured on Stereogum. On April 4th, 2018, it was announced that the band had signed to Polyvinyl Record Co.]

[Momma’s Boy, is an Indie Surf Pop 4-piece band from KCMO, formed December 2015, and made up of former members of Rev Gusto: Peter Beatty on guitar & vocals, Shaun Crowley on guitar & vocals, Quinn Hernandez on drums, and Jared Bajkowski on bass & vocals. Their debut EP Liquid Courage was released February 25, 2017. Self-recorded in the Momma’s Boy band practice attic. Mixed by Jared Bajkowski, and mastered by Ross Brown.
