Their 1967 record Surrealistic Pillow is regarded as one of the key recordings of the “Summer of Love”. Matthew Roth & Nan Turner of Schwervon!, with Brenton Cook of Haymaker Records, and Dedric Moore of Monta At Odds and Gemini Revolution, on the Oct. 1, 2014, Wednesday MidDay Medley.

Schwervon! is a two piece rock band. Nan Turner plays drums and Matthew Roth plays guitar and they both sing. They lived in NYC for 15 years before relocating to Kansas City over a year ago. Matt also performs solo as Major Matt Mason USA and was part of the Anti Folk music scene in NYC, and is also founder of Olive Jusice Music. Nan also performs with the all female group: The One Night Stands. Schwervon has played on stages with The Vaselines, Belle & Sebastian, The Wedding Present, Vampire Weekend, Kimya Dawson, The Thermals, R. Ring (Kelley Deal & Mike Montgomery), Wussy, The Thalia Zedek Band and many more. Schwervon! plays a “Broken Teeth” CD Release Party, Friday, October 3, at FOKL in KCK, at 556 Central Avenue, with The Cave Girls, and Wick & the Tricks. And then Schwervon take of on their FALL FANTASTICO! TOUR 2014 Starting in St. Louis, to Brooklyn, to Scotland, Germany, Switzerland, France, Germany and beyond. More info at: schwervon.com

From Haymaker Record’s Press Release:

“Broken Teeth is the third release on the label and will be the first in the newly created Home-Fi Series on Haymaker. The Home-Fi Series provides an official release for special home recordings, demos, long-lost rarities and one-offs.

Schwervon! is a two-piece indie-pop rock group consisting of guitarist Matt Roth and drummer Nan Turner. They share vocal duties and also are a couple. After two years of whirlwind touring and Matt’s father Harry’s lung cancer diagnosis, Schwervon! found themselves moving from their Lower East Side apartment in New York City to a basement in a Kansas City suburb. Frustrated with the process of writing new material, Matt and Nan started reworking songs off of their third album, 2006’s I Dream of Teeth, giving it new life through a raw acoustic treatment. The result defies logic: a more vulnerable sound and yet somehow more kinetic.

Schwervon! worked out six songs from I Dream of Teeth, as well as two cover songs, including one by The Vaselines, a group they toured with in 2011, and another by one of their favorite NYC artists, The Purple Organ. The songs for the new stripped down project, dubbed Broken Teeth, were recorded in Schwervon!’s basement practice space in Shawnee, Kansas. The project is an evolution in sound that stands as a symbol for the rebirth Matt and Nan experienced joining Kansas City’s burgeoning art and music scene. It’s also a celebration of renewal, as Matt’s father is now in remission.

Schwervon! departs on an extended tour of the UK and Europe over the months of October and November. Discover the band, the label, tour dates, and the album online at haymakerrecords.net. More Schwervon! information is also available at schwervon.com

[The Voices of Unbound: Madagascar CD was created to celebrate the talent and culture of our Unbound community. The songs in this collection are entirely their own, and passed on to us to share with the world. Proceeds from each sale go to support education everywhere Unbound works.]

Barclay Martin recently traveled with musician, drummer, engineer and producer, Giuliano Mingucci. The two spent a month recording music written by the local people of Madagascar. The music was recorded in make-shift studios, field recordings, in people’s homes and villages.

from Unbound.org

“THIS MUSIC WAS BORN IN DUSTY STREETS, AND IN FIELDS THAT ECHO THE SOUND OF LIFE SURROUNDING.

Its beauty is raw and unregimented—it can’t be held captive. Because songs like these have hands. They till the land, reaching closer to the heartbeat of a people. It is a call to feel the vibration of life at ground level.

With borrowed instruments, the environment instills vital breath into each song. Amidst fragile and failing systems, each musician has made their song a celebration, and their once-muted voices represent a new arrival.

This collection is evidence that life is abundant in these humble habitations, and that a response to the questions of our time might lie in these songs and in these places.

The solution has always been there.

And it sounds like music.”
