[Veteran singer songwriter, and rock and roller, Phil Neal’s early eighties band, The Artists, had a video in rotation on MTV, critical acclaim, and national management. When the band fell apart, Phil continued on, writing songs, and playing for over three decades, with several different bands, all while raising a family, and making a home, here in Kansas City. The songwriter has written dozens, of what he calls “Midwestern Rock” numbers. The Wornalls are the band Phil wanted, to bring his songs to life. Doug Gunn on drums, Danko Loftus on bass, Gary Paredes on guitar, Ben Eisiminger on keyboard, and Bruce Sidener on guitar, they are more than a band to Phil, they’re old friends.]

2. Billy Joe Shaver – “If The Trailer’s Rockin’ Don’t Come Knockin’”

[18th release of 22 from Billy Joe Shaver, born August 16, 1939, in Corsicana, Texas. He is a Texas country music singer and songwriter. Shaver’s 1973 album “Old Five and Dimers Like Me” is a classic in the outlaw country genre. Upon his discharge,from the Navy he worked a series of dead-end jobs, including trying to be a rodeo cowboy. About this time, Shaver met and married Brenda Joyce Tindell. They had one son, John Edwin, known as Eddy, who was born in 1962. The two divorced and remarried several times. Shaver took a job at a lumber mill to make ends meet. One day his right hand (his dominant hand) became caught in the machinery, and he lost the better part of two fingers and contracted a serious infection. He eventually recovered, and taught himself to play the guitar without those missing fingers. Shaver set out to hitchhike to LA and ended up just outside of Memphis, Tennessee. and then Nashville, where he found a job as a songwriter for $50 a week. His work came to the attention of Waylon Jennings, who filled most of his album Honky Tonk Heroes with Shaver’s songs. Other artists, including Elvis Presley and Kris Kristofferson, began to record Shaver’s music. This led to his own record deal. After losing his wife, Brenda, and his mother to cancer in 1999, Shaver lost his son and longtime guitarist Eddy, who died at age 38 of a heroin overdose on December 31, 2000. Shaver nearly died himself the following year when he had a heart attack on stage during an Independence Day show in Texas. After successful heart surgery, Shaver came back to release Freedom’s Child in 2002. In 1999, Shaver performed at the Grand Ole Opry. In November 2005, he performed on the CMT Outlaws 2005. In 2006, Shaver was inducted in the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame. He recently served as spiritual advisor to Texas independent gubernatorial candidate Kinky Friedman. For his efforts, the Americana Music Convention awarded him their Lifetime Achievement Award in Songwriting. He currently lives in Waco, Texas. Bob Dylan mentioned Shaver in his song “I Feel a Change Comin’ On” (Bob Dylan and Robert Hunter) on the album, Together Through Life (2009) – “I’m listening to Billy Joe Shaver, And I’m reading James Joyce”. Police in Lorena, Texas, issued arrest warrants for Shaver April 2, 2007 on charges of aggravated assault and possessing a firearm in a prohibited place. This was in connection with an incident outside a tavern, Papa Joe’s Texas Saloon in Lorena on March 31, 2007, in which Shaver shot a man, Billy Bryant Coker, in the face with a handgun. Coker’s injuries were reported as not life-threatening. Witnesses interviewed by police report hearing Shaver saying “where do you want it?” and then, after the shot was fired, “Tell me you are sorry” and “No one tells me to shut up.” Coker told police the attack was unprovoked. Shaver’s attorney declared that Shaver had shot Coker “in self-defense” after Coker threatened Shaver with a knife. After unsuccessfully attempting to surrender to police in Austin, TX, who were unaware of the warrant, Shaver turned himself in at McLennan County Jail in Waco, TX on Tuesday, April 3. He was released after an hour on $50,000 bond and gave his scheduled performance at Waterloo Records in Austin that evening, where he reportedly told fans, “Don’t forget to pray for me, and tell your kids to pray for me, too.” He was acquitted in a Waco court on April 9, 2010 after testifying that he acted in self-defense. The Texas based country musician, Dale Watson, wrote a song about the incident titled “Where Do You Want It?” The song has been recorded by Whitey Morgan and the 78’s and appears on their second album, Whitey Morgan and the 78’s, on Bloodshot Records.]

10:15 – Interview with Valarie Vogel

On June 11, 2001, the Jackson County Sheriff arrested Bryon Case and charged him with the murder of Anastasia WitbolsFeugen, who had been found dead, three years earlier, on October 22, 1997. Byron Case was convicted by jury trial, on May 2, 2002 of Murder in the First Degree and of Armed Criminal Action. He received a sentence of Life in Prison Without Chance of Parole. He exhausted his last appeal in 2010, when the Supreme Court of the United States denied his petition to consider his habeas corpus appeal. Through the trials and 13 years in prison, Byron and his family, have maintained his innocence.

Valarie Vogel is originally from Pittsburgh, PA. She currently lives in LA, and works as a police dispatcher in Southern California. Valarie learned about Byron Case through a friend and began doing research in Byron Case’s Murder trial. Valarie joined us to share information about Byron’s first book, THE PARIAH’S SYNTAX, Notes From An Innocent Man, published by Red Bat Books.

Much of the case rested on the testimony of Byron Case’s ex-girlfriend Kelly Moffett who had started dating the 18 year old Case when she was still in Middle School and 14 years of age. Kelly changed her story from what she reported to the investigating Sheriff immediately after the Anastasia was found dead. Kelly ended up testifying against Byron. She received immunity for her testimony.

The Kansas City based rock and roll band, The Lucky celebrates the release of their furst full length release, Swimming Invisible, with release party and show, Friday, May 23 at 9:00pm, at the recordBar, 1020 Westport Rd, Kansas City, Missouri, with NowHere, and Sextonic Plates. Joining us in the studio are two of the four members of The Lucky, Camilla Camille, and Iason Mac Ai.

Igniting a post-punk-riot explosion, The Lucky combines the intellect, sensuality, and fire-and-powder energy of Camilla Camille and Iason Mac Ai. Together they create dirty garage rock with a literary edge and a beat you can dance to.

Camille and Iason became fast friends over coffee and guitar riffs in the summer of 2011. In the heat of their collaboration, new songs took shape and old songs were reborn.

Sharing vocals, they mixed a punk and riot girl recipe for rock-n-roll. They named the band The Lucky, added a drummer and began performing shows in June 2012.

The Lucky recorded with Paul Malinowski at Massive Sound Studio and released a four-song demo in February 2013.

After going through a Spinal Tap-like procession of drummers, Dustin Mott joined the band with bassist Calandra Rene in July 2013. Camille, who previously played guitar, switched solely to vocals, adding her enthusiastic choreography to the live show.

Camille is sometimes sweet, like Kathleen Hannah, and other times primal, like Donita Sparks. Iason is reminiscent of Iggy Pop and Lou Reed, while his guitar solos weave a haunting melody of divine frosting.

Drawing on musical influences throughout the history of rock-n-roll as well as literary idols such as Lord Byron and Emily Dickinson, The Lucky forges a powerful post-punk-riot fusion that begs to be turned up a little louder.
