[Organ-led psych-pop band from Los Angeles with a trippy, lo-fi sound. Mr. Elevator and the Brain Hotel take their name from a Donovan lyric, and their melding of ’60s psych-pop and contemporary lo-fi underground made them a natural fit for California D.I.Y. empire Burger Records, who signed them in 2013. Their debut album, Nico and Her Psychedelic Subconscious, pitted trippy organ-led jams against tuneful pop in a way similar to ’60s-referencing West Coast acts like Foxygen and the Allah-Las.][Mr. Elevator & The Brain Hotel play Riot Room, 4048 Broadway at 11:30 pm for MOTM.]

5. Strand of Oaks – “Heal”
from: Goshen ’97 / Dead Oceans / June 24, 2014
[Strand of Oaks, is a project by songwriter and producer Timothy Showalter. Originally from Indiana, he currently resides in Philadelphia. His music classifies with the genres rock and folk music, or folk rock. After high school, Showalter moved from Indiana to Pennsylvania. While Showalter was on tour, his wife had an affair. Escaping his detrimental relationship, he moved back to Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania in 2003. A couple months later, he came home to find his house burned down. Showalter spent his nights in hotels and on park benches with a borrowed guitar while working at an orthodox Jewish day school. Despite the turmoil, he was able to find inspiration to continue writing music that would later be released. Showalter’s first album Leave Ruin was released in 2009 on the Pennsylvania label La Société Expéditionnaire while touring and collaborating with Lou Rogai (Lewis & Clarke). Pope Killdragon is a self-released album by Showalter. The album was produced by audio engineer, Ben Vehorn. While holding onto Strand of Oak’s folky sound, Vehorn added in synthesizers and effects pedals to create an album with a sound that was unexplored territory for Showalter. In between tours, Showalter wrote music for what would become Dark Shores. He recorded this album with John Vanderslice who produced the songs. “Dark Shores” (2012) is the 2nd album self-released by Showalter. Once Showalter returned from tour, he got to work recording about 30 demos in three weeks. He wrote and recorded songs in his home studio which led to his last album, HEAL (2014). This was the first album Showalter released on Dead Oceans. On Christmas Day in 2013, Showalter and Sue were driving back to Philadelphia from Indiana when they hit a patch of ice and crashed into two semi trucks. Showalter suffered a concussion and broke every rib on his right side. The near-death experience gave Showalter a boldness during mixing sessions while creating HEAL with John Congleton, just days after the crash. Since being released, “HEAL” has received much acclaim being named one of the best albums released in 2014. Showalter has toured extensively in support of the album and opened for Jason Isbell, Iron and Wine, and Ryan Adams. Strand of Oaks made their television debut in 2014 appearing on Late Night with Seth Meyers][Strand of Oaks play the 7th annual Middle of the Map Fest, Friday, May 5, at The Uptown Theatre, at 8:00 PM, opening for Grammy Award winner, Jason Isbell.]

6. Jason Isbell – “Stockholm”
from: Southeastern / Southeastern Records / June 11, 2013
[4th studio album by singer-songwriter Jason Isbell. Produced by David Cobb, the album was released to widespread critical acclaim. Initially set to be produced by Isbell’s friend and touring companion Ryan Adams, the album was recorded following a stint in rehab, with Isbell noting, “This time I want to remember it all.” The album was recorded without the full participation of Jason Isbell’s regular backing band The 400 Unit, with Isbell noting: “It really came to the nature of the songs more than anything else. It’s a very personal record for me. And I had gone into the studio with the intention of making more of a solo, acoustic album. But Dave [Cobb], the producer, and I both sort of got bored with that idea and we decided to bring a band in for some things.” The 400 Unit band members Chad Gamble and Derry deBorja appear on drums and keyboards, respectively.][Jason Isbell plays Middle of the Map, Friday, May 5, at The Uptown Theatre, at 9:15 PM.]
