   [By Mark Redfern for Under the Radar: Courtney Barnett has announced a new album, Creature of Habit, and shared a new song from it, “Site Unseen,” which features Waxahatchee. // In 2023 Barnett released a new instrumental album, End of the Day. Barnett’s last album of regular songs, Things Take Time, Take Time, came out in 2021 via Mom + Pop Music/Marathon Artists. // Creature of Habit was written after Barnett relocated from her native Australia to Los Angeles and also closed down her label, Milk! Records. // Of “Site Unseen” and working with Waxahatchee (aka Katie Crutchfield), Barnett says in a press release: “I tried three separate times over two years to track this song, and each time it either wasn’t finished or didn’t sound right and each time we had to start again. I kept hearing this really high harmony in my head, so for the fourth and final version, I asked Katie if she’d be into singing it with me. I’m a big Waxahatchee fan. I really love Katie’s songwriting and her voice, so it was an honor to have her sing on ‘Site Unseen.’”]

3. The Swallowtails – “One of These Days”

In 2024, the band wrote, produced, and self recorded their 5-song EP Lucky Penny (2024). The duo received the award Best Local Band in Kansas City by The Pitch Awards. In 2025 The Swallowtails were featured at Ozark Mountain Music Fest, Smoky Hill River Festival, and Boulevardia. They collaborated on a re-release of their single “Lucky Penny” with acclaimed Nashville-based fiddle player John Mailander, and they completed writing and recording their third full length album, PERSPECTIVE, backed and funded for over $21,000 by a Kickstarter campaign, and produced in collab-oration with Heidi Gluck. 4. Allison Russell & Norah Jones – “Really Real”

To mark the occasion she has shared her single “Cold April” featuring her tourmate Kara Jackson, Denitia and the Explore! Pop Choir. // Allison Russell just completed her second run on Broadway as Persephone in the 8x Tony Award winning musical Hadestown. She took over the role in November 2024 initially, after spending much of that year opening for Hozier on his Unreal Unearth Tour supporting his arena run on all US dates and throughout Europe.    [Amy Speace writes, “I wrote it quickly one January night soon after Renee Goode was killed, feeling like, as a poet, a songwriter and a mother, I needed to respond. But I didn’t know what to say. At all. So I wrote that. May we all take care of each other and our neighbors.” // Heralded by Rolling Stone, The New York Times, Billboard Magazine and NPR’s “Weekend Edition,” singer/songwriter Amy Speace is one of contemporary folk music’s leading voices and widely considered one of the best songwriters in Folk and Americana. 7. Duncan Burnett – “Cuddle Up”

   [Olathe, KS based hip hop artist, singer, songwriter, producer, musician, drummer. // Duncan Burnett s the drummer and member of Making Movies. He also has produced music for Lava Dreams. // From Tim Finn’s Back To Rockville (KC Star) Blog Sept. 9, 2015 – When he settled on hip-hop as his music genre, Duncan Burnett had two missions in mind: Keep the messages positive. “I’m big on spirituality and being a positive influence,” he said. “When I started, my goal was to have my nieces & nephews be able to listen to their uncle’s music and love it and be able to repeat every line & lyric but also to have people my age relate to it.” His second mission was to provide live music during his performances. Burnett has been performing live since he was 7. Live music, he said, is in his blood. Just Angel has performed with My Brothers & Sisters. Just Angel and her band, The Wades (which include T.A. Rell) can be found rocking stages with her original songs from her recordings and eclectic takes on popular music. She released her debut EP, JUST ANGEL, PART 1 on December 24, 2020. She released her follow up EP, JUST ANGEL, PART 2 on December 25, 2021. She also contributed vocals to the amazing Sisterbot record. Just Angel has performed in multiple theatre theatre productions., and has been working on her musical degree at UMKC. Last year Just Angel released the single “Dumb” which was part of WMM’s favorite 50 Singles of 2024.

Just Angel collaborates with T.A. Rell who plays keyboards and sings background with Just Angel in their band The Wades. Arick “T.A. Rell” Ridgell is a 24 year old musician has been writing and producing music since the age of 18. The Kansas City, Missouri native was born August 29, 1990. He’s an alumni of Center High School (Kansas City, MO), and a current student at Longview Community College (Lee’s Summit, MO), where he’s currently looking to obtain a degree in Audio Engineering.

Just Angel has been studying at UMKC and recently graduated with a degree in Psychology.

Clarence Copridge went to Raytown South Senior High (2012 – 2013) and graduated from Fort Osage High School in 2016. Clarence studied at Johnson County Community College. Clarence is a multi instrumentalist who has collaborated with many musicians and performers in Kansas City including Jass. He works in Music Production for Copridge Media Group based in Raytown, Missouri since 2009.

Rosie O’Brien is a musician and organizer originally from Lawrence, KS. She studied Political Science, Studio Art, and Mandarin Chinese at Grinnell College in Iowa and pursued a career in political and environmental activism before transitioning into music full-time. Rosie returned to Kansas in 2017, where she studied traditional drumming with Prof. Dylan Bassett via the KU West African Drumming Ensemble; she also joined Lawrence’s annual Mardi Gras parade community as a trombonist, simultaneously founding her own Mardi Gras-style street parade brass ensemble, Sass-a-Brass. Rosie moved to Kansas City in 2021 to expand the project, which has received grants from both the Charlotte Street Foundation and ArtsKC to increase accessibility within community brass bands for women and queer musicians. Sass-a-Brass Kansas City’s only queer street parade brass band, bringing the party with a mix of street activism, street band energy, and New Orleans Mardi Gras and second-line tradition. Sass-A-Brass came together in 2018 to lead the first-ever Pride parade in downtown Lawrence. Co-leaders Kimberly (snare) and Rosie (trombone & Sousaphone) first connected at Lawrence’s annual Mardi Gras parade and were called upon by Lawrence journalist and organizer Fally Afani to form a femme-fronted, queer & nonbinary-inclusive band to play second-line and funk tunes for the community.

During her undergraduate studies, Rosie sang and toured annually with the Grinnell Singers, where she debuted and recorded the original compositions of her mentor and director, Dr. John Rommereim, in both Iowa and Taiwan.

Rosie returned to Kansas in 2017, where she studied traditional djembe & dunun with Prof. Dylan Bassett via the KU West African Drumming Ensemble; she also joined Lawrence’s annual Mardi Gras parade community as a trombonist, simultaneously founding her own Mardi Gras-style street parade brass ensemble, Sass-a-Brass. Rosie moved to KC in 2021 to expand the project, eceiving grants from Charlotte Street Foundation & ArtsKC to increase accessibility within community brass bands for women and queer musicians.

Rosie joined the KC Ballet School as an accompanist in 2023 and plays traditional djembe for modern dance classes and the ROAD program. In 2025, Rosie will enter her second season as a soprano with professional choral ensemble Te Deum; she is in her third season as a Choral Associate with Country Club Christian Church, and enjoys performing locally as a vocalist and percussionist with her 8-piece free-improvisation band Apricot Glow.

Sass-a-Brass is KC’s only queer street parade brass band, bringing the party with a mix of HONK-style activist street band energy and borrowing from the New Orleans Mardi Gras and second-line tradition. Our mission is to bring queer musical joy to the public, and provide a welcoming space where underrepresented groups experience a sense of belonging and sustained growth as musicians. As a community-minded band, we intentionally recruit amateur, multi-generational and non-traditional players to join. Since its inception in 2018, Sass-a-Brass has involved a variety of instrumentalists, of many genders and sexualities.

Over the years, Sass-A-Brass has benefited from the participation of many incredible musicians from the Lawrence and KC area; has involved wide-ranging instrumentation including keytar, amplified flute, and washboard; and has led musical celebrations for a diverse range of events (most notably an underground cave party and a Solstice parade ending in a public fountain).

Now split between Lawrence and Kansas City, the band continues to bring a bright and colorful vibe to Pride events, public parties and private gatherings alike. Through the sheer joy of community-based street parade culture, Sass-A-Brass spreads the good news: music is the key to liberation for all.

Sass-a-brass is raising funds to attend the Honk Fest in Summerville, Massachusetts, October 9 through 11, 2026.

Recently my friend Amy Britain had to say goodbye to her sweet Wesley, after he suffered a stroke. My friend Beth Barden had to say goodbye to her 20 year old Marcel, who was an amazingly strong survivor and rescue puppy. And my sister Julie Grabill had to say goodbye to her beloved Jack after he was killed in an automobile accident near their farm.

With love we dedicate our next two songs to Wesley & Amy, Marcel & Beth, and Jack & Julie!

There is a larger Dog Spirit where all dogs run together, and in my dreams and own dogs Maggie and Jack come to me with their wet noses pressed against my face, reminding me of their love.

Ken Pomeroy had her music featured in FX/Hulu television show Reservation Dogs. // Ken Pomeroy spoke on Indigenous Leadership & Advocacy panel at AmericanaFest 2024 . // Anchored in Pomeroy’s Native Cherokee heritage, Cruel Joke is a powerful collection that showcases her raw songwriting and engaging voice. 16. The Creek Rocks – “Happy Hopping Hoedown”

    [TAs The Creek Rocks, Springfield musicians Cindy Woolf and Mark Bilyeu have found their niche and an enthusiastic audience by seeking out, arranging, and performing the folk music of the Ozarks region. Their debut album, Wolf Hunter, for example, consisted of folk songs found in the collections of Max Hunter of Springfield, Missouri, and John Quincy Wolf of Batesville, Arkansas. The audio recordings from these collections are accessible online, just as they were for The Creek Rocks, so that anyone can listen. Note that both Hunter and Wolf began recording in the late 1950’s. For this latest project, The Creek Rocks have gone back further in time, to a collection that represents a largely forgotten musical history of Springfield, Missouri, and her surrounding communities – a collection, unlike those of Hunter’s and Wolf’s, that is not housed nearby or readily available for listening. When Sidney Robertson Cowell visited the Ozarks in December of 1936 and January of 1937, it was the first time that the musical folklore of the people of Springfield was recorded and preserved for future generations as audio artifacts. Once made, the recordings were sent to the Library of Congress. As the first recipients of the American Folklife Center’s “Artist in Resonance Fellowship,” The Creek Rocks were given the opportunity to travel to Washington to listen to and research Cowell’s collection. The fellowship came with the understanding that once home, they would then create a new musical project inspired by the music they had heard. And so it is with this new album, and the concert celebrating its release, that The Creek Rocks wants to give back to Springfield the music that Springfield itself gave to the nation 90 years ago.
