  1. Katy Guillen & The Drive – “Set In Stone”
from: “Set InStone” / Katy Guillen / May 24, 2022
[Produced by Kevin Ratterman (My Morning Jacket, Heartless Bastards, Ray LaMontagne) at Invisible Creature Studio in Los Angeles, “Set In Stone” is brimming with vibrant textures, fuzzy electric guitars, and warm vocals. “Set In Stone” marks the beginning of a major life transition for Katy Guillen (pronounced Ghee-En). Written shortly after her longtime band announced their final show, she was struggling to find the next step in her career and personal life, while longing for a past sense of stability. “The song’s vigorous structure and deliberate rhythms convey that feeling of defeat and darkness, but with a sense of resolution and surrender through the guitar solo – a favorite moment on the record for me,” explains Katy. “While it started on shaky ground, coming out on the other side meant starting over and building something new.”It is a taste of what’s to come on their full-length debut album ANOTHER ONE GAINED (due August 19, 2022), a memoir of growth and reawakening by way of heart-wrenching transition and change – loss of her long-time band, end of a romantic relationship and finding herself amidst it all. “Set In Stone” premiered earlier this week on Guitar Girl Magazine. Katy Guillen & The Drive – Katy Gillen (drums) and Stephanie William (drums) – dropped their first EP, Dream Girl, right before the 2020 lockdown, leaving them without opportunities to perform live. In their basement rehearsal space, they spent the year learning home recording and pre-production techniques, gradually crafting a collection of songs from the ground up. The following April, they took the demos to producer/engineer Kevin Ratterman (My Morning Jacket, Heartless Bastards, Ray LaMontagne) at Invisible Creature Studio in Los Angeles. From their work with Ratterman emerged a batch of 15 songs. At the end of 2021, the band released the four-track Battles EP, offering listeners a darker, more simmering edge to their impelling indie-rock sound. Ten more would comprise Another One Gained, the full-length debut due August 19, 2022. Previously Katy Guillen & The Drive released BATTLES EP on December 17, 2021, Recorded at Invisible Creature Studio in Los Angeles, CA. Engineered and mixed by Kevin Ratterman. Produced by Kevin Ratterman, Katy Guillen, and Stephanie Williams. Mastered by Shelley Anderson at Black Lab Mastering in Louisville, KY. All songs written by Katy Guillen and Stephanie Williams. Katy Guillen on vocals, guitar, bass, & keyboarda. Stephanie Williams on drums & percussion. Additional keys and programming by Kevin Ratterman. Album design and photography by Morgan Jones. This is a follow up to Katy Guillen & The Drive’s 7-song EP DREAM GIRL, released March 20, 2020. Katy Guillen & The Drive, is a project dedicated to Guillen’s songwriting that is founded on the creative spark and chemistry between Katy Guillen & Stephanie Williams. With Guillen on guitar & vocals and Williams on drums, the two sculpt a sound that recalls bands like Led Zeppelin, The Bangles, and Band of Skulls. In 2012, Guillen & Williams formed Katy Guillen and The Girls, and began to build a foundation of touring and recording that carried them through six years and produced three full-length albums: Katy Guillen & the Girls, Heavy Days, and Remember What You Knew Before. Between 2012 and 2018, they traveled the United States extensively, performed at the International Montreal Jazz Festival, toured Sweden, and supported major acts like The Doobie Brothers, Robin Trower, and Heartless Bastards. In these 6 years playing together, Guillen & Williams created a dynamic, sound informed by Guillen’s mesmerizing, emotive guitar style and poignant arrangements, and an equally captivating live show that showcased Williams’ technical, melodic style, resulting in a powerful on-stage chemistry. In addition to the compelling synergy formed by years of playing together, the two developed a method of working together on Guillen’s songs that only deepened their artistic connection, propelling them to forge a path to a new plateau in their music. KG & The Drive push ahead with a melodic, heavy, and soulful sound while maintaining the edge of the artist’s rock ‘n’ roll and blues roots. Katy Guillen joined us on WMM on March 18, 2020. Folk Alliance Spotlight
(Each week, Mark will feature an artist we talked with and heard play live at the 2022 Folk Alliance International Conference held in Kansas City May 18, 19, 20, 21, and 22.)

Crys Matthews
  1. Crys Matthews – “Changemakers”
    from: CHANGEMAKERS / Crys Matthews / May 26, 2021
[Winner of the 2022 Folk Alliance International Folk Muaic Award for Song of the Year. Crys Matthews was also an Official Showcase Artist for the 34th Annual Folk Alliance International Conference, May 18, 19, 21, 21, and 22 in Kansas City, at Westin Crown Center Hotel, More info at http://www.folk.org. Already being hailed as “the next Woody Guthrie,” Crys Matthews is among the brightest stars of the new generation of social justice music-makers. A powerful lyricist whose songs of compassionate dissent reflect her lived experience as what she lightheartedly calls “the poster-child for intersectionality,” Justin Hiltner of Bluegrass Situation called Matthews’s gift “a reminder of what beauty can occur when we bridge those divides.” She is made for these times and, with the release of her new, hope-fueled, love-filled social justice album Changemakers, Matthews hopes to take her place alongside some of her heroes in the world of social-justice music like Sweet Honey in the Rock and Holly Near. Of Matthews, ASCAP VP & Creative Director Eric Philbrook says, “By wrapping honest emotions around her socially conscious messages and dynamically delivering them with a warm heart and a strong voice, she lifts our spirits just when we need it most in these troubled times. // ”Matthews began performing in 2010, but cemented her acclaim at Lincoln Center as the 2017 New Song Music and Performance Competition grand prize winner. That year she also released two new projects—her album of thoughtful songs on love and life called The Imagineers, and her EP called Battle Hymn for an Army of Lovers, which tackles social justice themes. Matthews also won the People’s Music Network’s Social Justice Songs contest at the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance. Loyal fans quickly followed as Matthews racked up performances at large music festivals and prestigious venues across the country including the Sundance Film Festival, Kerrville Folk Festival, and locally at venues like The Birchmere, TheHamilton, Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center, and Jammin’ Java. In her TedTalk about difficult conversations called “Sing, Don’t Shout—An Alternative Approach” Matthews spoke about being born and raised in a small town in southeastern NorthCarolina by an A.M.E.preacher, and how she witnessed the power of music from an early age. A former drum major and classically-trained clarinetist turned folk singer, Matthews is using her voice to answer Dr. Martin Luther King’s call to be “a drum major for justice.” // “I believe in hope,” Matthews said. “As a social-justice songwriter, it is my duty to keep breathing that hope and encouragement into the people who listen to my music.” And, from the title track to the last track, Changemakers does just that all while tackling some heavy topics like immigration, the opioid crisis, Black Lives Matter, and gun safety to name a few.“ Ani DiFranco said, “People used to make records as in a record of an event,” said Matthews, “so I hope that these songs will serve as a time capsule, a record of the events of the last four years and what it was like to live through them.” Crys Matthews’s thoughtful, realistic and emotional songs speak to the voice of our generation and remind us why music indeed soothes the soul. 10:35 – Interview with Amy Farrand

Amy Farrand plays over a dozen instruments, bass, drums, lap steel, guitar, she has hosted variety shows, and radio shows, and she is licsensed to has been a a member of the bands: American Catastrophe, Experimental Instrument Orchestra, Shotgun Idols, Sister Mary Rotten Crotch, Atlantic Fadeout, The Silver Maggies. One reviewer wrote of her, “Amy Farrand is a tough-as-nails vocalist making her an invaluable asset to any live act.” In April 2018, Amy’s band Amy Farrand & The Like released their 11-song debut album and were nominated for a Pitch “Best of Kansas City” Award.

The last time we talked with Amy on the radio, was April 1, 2020, while she was stranded in Italy after traveling there to help a friend move back to the U.S. In her second week of visiting her friend, the Coronavirus hit hard and citizens were ordered to quarantine themselves at home. Amy was stuck in Italy for 4 months, and when it was time to come home her friend ended up staying Europe.

On April 1, 2020 in the U.S. there were 4085 deaths due to Covid 19, and 189,785 confirmed cases. As of today there have been over 1 million deaths in the United States due to Covid.

Amy came back to her home town that was shuttered, venues were closed, friends out of work, Davey’s Uptown lost to a fire. Amy decided to turn her efforts in ward, and as she put it, “do the work, on myself, to work out those things that have been haunting me my whole life.” She says that she is happier now than she has ever been in her whole life. She is 70 pounds lighter. Amy says as she did the work, the weight just went away, gradually over the last year and a half. Amy’s hair is naturally curly, her smile as big as ever. Amy Farrand is real. One of the most real people you will ever meet. She is honest and hardworking and a walking history of the last 25 years of the Kansas City Music Community.

Amy talked with us about how she left home at the age a fifteen, and got her own apartment in midtown. She talked about going to Recycled Sounds to buy posters to decorate her new, self-made home. Recycled Sounds owner, Anne Winter asked Amy if this was for her bedroom, Amy replied that it was for her new apartment. Anne asked, “How old are you?” When Amy replied “15” Anne’s mouth fell open, and that is when Amy felt Anne’s maternal energy, looking after her, even though as Amy mentioned, “she wouldn’t hire me to work at the store.” Amy said, “I would slip my application in while Billy Smith was working there, but Anne didn’t want to hire me, and it’s probably just as well, because I probably would have just spent my entire paycheck on records.”

One of Amy’s first band’s was My Childhood Hero, the reformation and new identity of the previous band, The Young Johnny Carson Story, a band formed by Eve Sheldon, Tom Livesay, and Jeff Brown in 1991. In 1994, after receiving a “deceased and desist” letter from Carson Productions, the band changed their name and added drummer Amy Farrand to the group.

Amy talked with us about picking up a guitar and playing for the first time in years. She talked about finding her voice again. Amy Farrand and The Like play their first show in almost three years on Friday, June 3, at 8:00 PM at The Black Box, 1060 Union Ave., KCMO, in West Bottoms with The Utilitarians.

from: “Love In Remission” – Single / Drop Out Records / March 25, 2022
[Belle & The Vertigo Waves is the sonic brainchild of Belle Loux. She resides in KCMO, and is slowly attempting world domination. Members include Belle Loux on lead vocals, John Loux on guitar. This new single is a follow up to “Stand Down” released Jan. 21, 2022. Belle & The Vertigo Waves released their debut album, ALIGNED on Drop Out Records on Oct. 6, 2017. “About the album, Belle told Michelle Bacon at The Bridge, “Many of the tunes had been written around five years prior, when I was just 15 or 16.” Belle had only played them as a solo artist with occasional accompaniment from her dad, guitarist John Loux, & keyboardist Charlie Hibberd. In 2017, she hired the two musicians and a couple other friends to track “Aligned,” dubbing the project Belle and the Vertigo Waves, in the hopes that she’d eventually assemble a live band. “Recording was a surreal and emotional experience. Playing the songs with a band was like seeing them come to life,” she said. “I knew there was no way I could be a solo artist anymore, because I fell in love with the full band sound so much.” The music of Belle & The Vertigo Waves have been described as having an “1980s pop-laden sound.” which drew local attention in 2018. Belle has said that in the past 4 years the band has grown to have more of a darker, glam rock sound, grittier and grungier. Their sound is influenced by three generations of musicians in the band, Belle’s growth as a songwriter and singer, and through the band’s work with engineer and producer Paul Malinowski. Belle & The Vertigo Waves released their single, “Fear or Faith” on June 7, 2019 on Drop Out Records. Belle & The Vertigo Waves released their single, “Pulse” on April 17, 2020 on Drop Out Records. Ondist is a recording project created by Corbin Dooley with singer songwriter Maya Coppola (Imani’s sister) and Nick Poortman.

Corbin Dooley signed Nine Inch nails to TVT Records in 1990. He managed Blur, and Tekronic.

Kansas City based drummer, producer and engineer Sam Platt told us about how he grew up in Carthage Missouri where Corbin Dooley would visit during summers, staying with is grandparents. Sam explained that recently Corbin with Ondist has been traveling around the country, recording songs. Corbin asked Sam to put a band together for some Kansas City sessions. It was such a success that Corbin has been back twice to record. Corbin flew in producer Nadir Omawale from Detroit and Luke John from Memphis. Recordings took place at Weights and Measures with Duane Trower.

For this track: Claire Adams on lead vocals, Sam Platt on drums, Eddie Moore on keyboards, DeAndre Manning on bass, Jamie Anderson on guitar.

Sam Platt told us that over 20 songs were recorded, 14 originals, 6 covers. Corbin Dooley narrowed down a few for Claire Adams to sing. From these recordings and others 14 songs ended up on No Coincidence. Sam Platt flew to LA to record and played on tracks with Nick Gaffeney a drummer from New Zealand. Sam said the rest of the albums sounds like it mostly features the Kansas City musicians, or played/programmed by Corbin, Nick and Maya.

  1. Jackie Myers Angel – “I’ve got A Plan (Live)”
    from: Clementine (Live) / Jackie Myers / April8. 2020
[Jackie Myers may have the Midas touch for groove, conjuring up musical styles ranging from soul, jazz and modern R&B each time the talented pianist places her hands on the keys. Daytrotter’s Pat Stolley says of Jackie’s music “It reminds me of Joni Mitchell’s jazz period.” The finesse on her chosen instrument plays complement to what the Austin Chronicle describes as “her earthy lungs” – beautiful, captivating, complex, and always with an edge.// 017 saw Myers featured on a Daytrotter session which was lauded as one of the best of that week’s releases by the site. She also produced and composed for the project “Silent Films Out Loud,” A Buster Keaton tribute that commissioned new scores for several short films, which were played live in tandem with a screening of the films at Austin’s premier theater – The Stateside at the Paramount. Myers also produced and performed in a live recreation of Carole King’s Tapestry at Stubb’s. Last but not least, Myers released her album Third which has enjoyed a fair amount of airplay and success throughout the year. // hird! was recorded in Austin at 5th Street Studios (White Denim, Leon Bridges) and features guitarist Michael Brinley (Black Joe Lewis) and Eduardo Torres (Black Joe Lewis, La Mafia) on drums. The album was meticulously crafted by Myers, with its arrangements and orchestrations of original compositions and unique covers planned track by track. “We’d start the sessions with me handing out sheet music. It wasn’t a ‘This is in Bb minor, go!’ type thing at all,” explains Myers. The 11 tracks on Third! range from “the answer to the Doo-wop era” to the “uncharted territory of synths,” exploring a wide array of subject matter from notorious criminals and existential perils to childhood nostalgia. The album saw airplay on several radio stations including KXCI, KMUZ, KAFM, KHUM, NPR affiliate stations: KCUR and KGOU and is the regular rotation on KLOI even a year later. // The Instrumental One, Myers most recent release is a live album she was invited to record at the prestigious venue The Green Lady in Kansas City, MO. The album was featured in KC’s music Magazine The Jam; and received a positive review by music columnist Roger Atkinson. // NEW LIVE ALBUM – The Myers Swingset – The State of This City – Out Now!!
