[6th album from Grammy nominated Iris DeMent who NPR said was ”one of the great voices in contemporary popular music.” The Trackless Woods sets 18 poems by acclaimed 20th century Russian poet Anna Akhmatova to life. Hailed as one of Russia’s finest poets, Akhmatova survived the Bolshevik Revolution, both World Wars and Stalin. She lost family, friends & fellow writers to political killings and labor in the gulags. When Iris randomly stumbled upon Akhmatova’s work in a book of poetry a friend sent as a gift, she was immediately taken by the sorrow and burden of the poems, juxtaposed with Akhmatova’s lightness and transcendence in the face of inhumanity. ”Anna’s gift of song is so strong, about alI I had to do was get really quiet and listen,” says Iris. After reading that first poem the melodies began pouring out of her, and before she even fully understood what was driving her, Iris was gathering musicians & friends, including co-producer Richard Bennett (Emmylou Harris, Neil Diamond, Steve Earle), to record ‘The Trackless Woods’ in her living room over 5-days. The result is a pairing of piano and voice in Iris’ style with timeless melodies that are rooted in the American South. On Oct 2, 2012 Iris released Sing The Delta. The album was a return to the roots of her mother, who had recently passed. The album was #1 on WMM’s 112 Best Recordings of 2012.]

6. Scott Hrabko & The Rabbits – “Pretty Good Day”

[Scott Hrabko’s new single, available online Nov. 3. For this single the Rabbits were Jason Beers, Gary Paredes and Havilah Bruders. On Febrary 14, 2019 Scott Hrabko released the EP Smash Hits From A Parallel Universe with Scott Hrabko on lead vocals, backing vocals, acoustic 6 and 12 string guitar, electric guitar, keyboards, & percussion; Jason Beers on bass guitar; Tim Higgins on drums, Marco Pascolini on junior electric guitar. Scott called this release: 4 songs for the new age of anxiety. Scott Hrako & The Rabbits released “Summer” in 2017, and “Biscuits and Gravity” in 2015. Scott Hrabko’s 2013 critically acclaimed solo release, “Gone Places” was said to be 30 years in the making. Singer-songwriter Scott Hrabko has played with KC’s oldest garage band The Original Sinners, as well as various incarnations of the 1980s bands: The Splinters, and The Andersons. In the early 1990s Scott performed as a solo artist in coffee houses with Iris Dement and Howard Eisberg.]

The band is: Nick Carswell, Jason Slote, Austin Quick, Chris Handley, and Jordan Tucker. Songwriter Nick Carswell is originally from Limerick, Ireland and has found a new home on the plains of Kansas. Nick has been living in Lawrence, KS since 2011. He formed Carswell & Hope in late 2012. The band released their debut album in 2014, coinciding with a two week Irish tour. Nick also plays bass in the electro-pop band Pink Royal and is the force behind Silly Goose Records and the annual MixMaster music conference, now part of the Crossroads Music Festival.]

Julie Berndsen, Brandon Phillips, Adam Phillips thanks for being with us on WMM

Brandon Phillips was last on Wednesday MidDay Medley on April 3, 2019 when Too Much Rock released the Brandon Phillips and The Condition single “People Talk.”

Brandon, Zach, & Adam Phillips come from an artistic family. Their father was a jazz musician, playwright, and actor and their mother an art teacher. The brothers started by playing AC/DC covers, but moved on to original songs and a broader range of influences. In 1991 they formed their first band and a 14-year-old Brandon led his younger brothers Zach & Adam into a seedy bar in KC to play their first gig to the small crowd of locals. In 1997 the brother’s a ska and rock & roll band, The Gadjits, released their debut album, Da Gravy on Yo’ Grits, on their own JoCo Ska label. They recorded five full length albums on Hellcat Records, Thick Records and an unreleased album for RCA Records. They played The Vans Warped Tour, and supported the Skatallites, Rancid, Let’s Go Bowling.

In 2004 The Gadjits ended and the brothers formed a new band called The Architects who have released six full length albums and two EPs, including The Border Wars graphic novel/EP series, on which they worked with illustrator Mallory Dorn.

The Phillips brothers found that the music they were making for The Architects was changing and moving in new directions. Rather than disappoint longtime fans of The Architects with new sounds, they instead created new musical projects to explore new musical territory they wanted to play. These new journeys include: Other Americans with Julie Berndsen (formerly of the Latenight Callers) on lead vocals, Brandon Phillips and The Condition with Brandon on vocals, and Radar State where Adam plays drums. The first Other Americans EP included brother Zach Phillips on bass, and former Gadjit member Ehren Starks who was brought in by Brandon to play keyboards with Brandon Phillips and The Condition and ended up helping to write songs for the Other Americans debut EP released last year. Julie Berndsen sings backup vocals in Brandon Phillips and The Condition, an ensemble that changes based on availability of musicians and family.

Other Americans came together when a mutual friend and Kansas City producer Joel Nanos introduced Brandon Phillips to vocalist Julie Berndsen. As Brandon told Nick Spacek of Pitch Kansas City, “We were all looking for something new to do musically. The way I remember it, a mutual friend (Joel) told me that Julie was looking to start something new and I sent her a note about it. We had tacos to see if we liked each other.”

“We had never met,” Phillips says of that first interaction. “So, we had to do the weird, sit-down, getting to know you: ‘What kind of records do you like? Is it okay if I double dip?’”

“I didn’t know that Brandon was into electronic dance stuff as much as he was,” Berndsen says, “so that was really exciting.”

“A big portion for the idea of this band, before it even started, was that it was supposed to be very different from the other stuff that we’ve done,” says drummer Adam Phillips.

Hailing from the musical hotbeds of Kansas City, MO, and Lawrence, KS, the electro-alternative OTHER AMERICANS are comprised of members of such regional luminaries as The Architects, Latenight Callers, The Philistines, Radar State and Brandon Phillips and The Condition.

HMPH! was recorded by the band in their home recording studio, so the album had time to evolve, and the complicated arrangements materialized through this process.

One of the biggest differences between the band’s 2015 debut Headrush and the new album is the addition of Kitten Adventure Boggs on bass.

Kitten Adventure Boggs has actually been with the band for several years now.

Kitten Adventure Boggs is also the Creative Director for PLY Magazine (plymagazine.com) a quarterly periodical, and source for spinning knowledge, and technique, going beyond the basics, to reflect a global community, and explore this fiber arts passion.

Their debut full-length “Headrush” was released on limited edition cassette and vinyl in April, 2015 by Haymaker Records. Aside from going from a duo to a trio how has the band changed in these last 4 years.

Ryan Lee Toms, Jonathan Thatch, Kitten Adventure Boggs wrote all the music.

Ryan Lee Toms is also known for his musical recordings with FACEFACE a hip hop duo with Paul Nyakatura. Ryan is also as RLT, an experimental / Dance / Electronic Band consisting of Ryan Lee Toms and John Bersuch, recording on RUSTY RECORDS with: Loop heavy electronic psych-rock with intense rhythmic backgrounds. RLT relies heavily on spastic electronic loops and intense drum rhythm. At times it can sound swirly and fun and others dark and gritty, all while driving a complex under rhythm that can change frantically. RLT is a long ever changing project.

Jonathan Thatch is also a drummer, DJ, and farmer at Shade Tree Collective, an urban farm on 33rd Street with his wife Rachel Hogan.

HMPH! is the three-piece math-rock outfit of Ryan Lee Toms (RLT), Jonathan Thatch, and Kitten Boggs. As an instrumental group with guitar, bass, drums, looping pedal and effects, the ingredients are simple but the result is not. Using staples of the math rock genre, such as technical patterned guitar riffs, odd time signatures, and herky-jerky start/stops, the songs greet your ears with a jarring wake up call. A unique sense of melody and structure cement a listening experience filled with unlikely anthems.

HMPH!’s second album, the self-titled “HMPH!” will be released worldwide on November 15, 2019d.

The album features album artwork by Ryan Lee Toms and Kitten Boggs and was pressed on CD and translucent green vinyl with digital download included. The LP includes a bonus re-working of the track “Trudge Dredge” from the first album.

Sondra Freeman is Director of Promotions and Artist Relations for Midwest Music Foundation, a nonprofit created to support music and musicians in Kansas City and the surrounding areas, founded in 2008 by a collective of musicians and music lovers. The Midwest Music Foundation (MMF) unites and empowers the greater Kansas City music community by providing programs and resources to area musicians through outreach, support, education, and health care opportunities. Sondra is instrumental in MMF’s annual events: Apocalypse Meow, MidCoast Takeover and the MidCoast Takeover fundraiser shows, as well as many other collaborative musical events and fundraisers.

The Midwest Music Foundation is proud to present the 12th Annual Apocalypse Meow to benefit Abby’s Fund for Musicians’ Health Care.

Abby’s Fund for Musicians’ Health Care was named for Abigail Henderson (1977-2013).

From St. Louis Post Dispatch: Abigail Hope Henderson the Kansas City vocalist who started a nonprofit organization to help musicians pay health-care costs, died on Tuesday, August 27, 2013 of cancer at her home. She was 35. For more than a decade, Abigail was the lead singer of several area bands: Trouble Junction, The Gaslights, Atlantic Fadeout, and Tiny Horse. In 2008 she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had health insurance, but the cost of the treatments prompted her and her husband Christopher Meck, to start the Midwest Music Foundation which raised funds to help area musicians pay health care costs. “Medical bills can throw you into poverty in a week – in one day,” she said. “There’s nothing like standing in your kitchen opening a hospital bill for $63,000.00 in one day and $47,000.00 the next. After a while you don’t want to open them anymore. Who can pay that?”

[Single release follow up to band’s 2nd album and Polyvinyl debut, Bell House. Shy Boys line-up consists of brothers Collin Rausch and Kyle Rausch, Konnor Ervin, Kyle Little and Ross Brown. Kyle Rausch and Konnor Ervin were already band mates in the indie-pop band The ACBs and Collin had been playing for years in the Kansas City area in various bands. The three shared a love for 1960s era pop rock and soon started writing their own music. In 2014 they released the self-titled Shy Boys on High Dive Records. The album received generally positive reviews and the single “Bully Fight” was featured on Spin.com. In June 2014 the band recorded and released two more singles and one of them, “Life Is Peachy,” was featured on Stereogum. On April 4th, 2018, it was announced that the band had signed to Polyvinyl Record Co.]
