4. Holy Ghost! – “Changing of The Guard”

[The brainchild of childhood friends Alex Frankel and Nick Millhiser, the Brooklyn-based band Holy Ghost! recently transformed from a duo into a 4-piece. The band has toured with LCD Soundsystem and Chromeo Holy Ghost uses a lot of vintage synths.]

5. The Dead Girls – “Naysayer”

[Formerly Dead Girls Ruin Everything. Formed in 2004 from the ashes of two bands that were staples of the Lawrence / KC power-pop sound. Guitarists / singers JoJo Longbottom and Cameron Hawk, of Podstar, combine their dual-guitar attack and vocal harmonies with the rhythmic assault of drummer Eric Melin and bassist Nick Colby, of Ultimate Fakebook. Produced by Chris Cosgrove who produced their 2010 album “Out Of Earshot.”]

6. Josh Berwanger – “I Can Feel The Moon”

[From Berwangermusic.com: Josh Berwanger made a name for himself as a member of The Anniversary, a Kansas band that released two albums (2000’s Designing a Nervous Breakdown & 2002’s Your Majesty) selling over 100,000 records before imploding in a breakup of Fleetwood Mac-style proportions while attempting to tour Japan. Undeterred, Berwanger put together a country-rock outfit called The Only Children–and released (2004’s Change of Living and 2007’s Keeper of Youth) before pulling the plug on that project and taking a job doing the next most logical thing possible– coaching high school basketball in Lawrence, Kansas. For Strange Stains, Berwanger joined forces with (original drummer for The Anniversary) Michael Hutcherson, who brought brought the rhythm to the record. “Josh and I met in 1996 while playing in local KC pop punk bands,” recalls Hutcherson, “I am honored to be making music with Josh again. For all that’s changed in our lives over the years, we’ve still got a symbiotic musical relationship. No questions, no egos, just rock and roll. The album also features additional playing from The Breeders’ Jim Macpherson.]

7. Maria The Mexican – “El Cascabel”

[Influenced by traditional Mariachi music, a hybrid of Mexican folklore and Rock. For 10 years, Teresa & Maria Elena Cuevas performed w/ Marachi Estrella founded by their grandmother Teresa Cuevas in 1970. One of the first all female mariachi bands in the country, Maria Teresa Alonzo Cuevas is a pioneer in the community. Her band flourished in the 80s but was struck by tragedy when 4 of the 7 members were killed in the Hyatt Skywalk collapse in 1981. Once Teresa recovered she began teaching her grand-children Mariachi music. In 2000, Teresa & Maria began exploring other genres of music while simultaneously co-directing Mariachi Estrella. The band’s fusion is mixed with blues, soul, funk, rock, enhanced by the musical knowledge and sounds of Garrett Nordstrom.]

Synergy Services is a not-for profit service organization that started in 1979 as Synergy House, the only shelter for runaway & homeless youth in western Missouri. Today, 35 years later, Synergy works to overcome violence in our community. Synergy provides extensive care for individuals & families. It’s Youth Crisis Shelter & Synergy Youth Resiliency Center provides: housing, mental health, social services, medical and dental care, as well as free art and music workshops to any metro area youth. This Sunday, Feb 23, 4 to 8:00 pm, at 2001 NE Parvin Road, KCMO. Synergy Services presents “Art Soup” an open house to event benefits the broad services that Synergy provides. Elizabeth Suh Lane, was acclaimed, “…among the finest chamber musicians in America today” by San Francisco Symphony’s Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas. She’s performed across the globe as a chamber, solo & orchestral musician in the finest concert halls. Elizabeth is founder-Executive-Artistic Director & violinist for Bach Aria Soloists. Her leadership has brought world-class collaborations to KC to partner with the ensemble.

Jeff Harshbarger, was voted KC’s Best Musician by Pitch Magazine, he has recorded and performed across the globe with such varied groups as Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Bobby Watson, Curtis Fuller, Forever Tango, Eugene Chadborne, Mitt Abel, and dozens more. He is the curator of Jeff Harshbarger Presents: An Alternative Jazz Series, at the recordBar.

Also joining us is Mark Lowry a co-founder of newEar Contemporary Chamber Ensemble. An orchestral musician, he has over 25 years experience with the Kansas City Symphony, Kansas City Ballet, and Lyric Opera of Kansas City. He is also a founding member of the Kansas City Chamber Orchestra. In the theater, he has performed with the national touring companies of Wicked, The Producers, Little Shop of Horrors, Spamalot, A Chorus Line, Young Frankenstein, and several others. Mark is a native of St. Louis and holds the Master of Music degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

The Bach Aria Soloist and newEar join together to present music by Johann Sebastian Bach and Igor Stravinsky on Feb. 22 at Community Christian Church. The concert will begin with Bach’s Sonata for Violin and Continuo in E minor. It will be performed by violinist Elizabeth Suh Lane, harpsichordist Elisa Bickers and double bassist Jeff Harshbarger. Money Wolf Music is presenting several musical showcases, the first being tonight at 8:00.

Folk Alliance International (FAI) is a membership-based industry group that advocates for folk music and dance, and provides support services for musicians. Defining “folk” as art which is “indigenous to one’s region or culture,” FAI welcomes artists from a wide variety of genres – blues, rock, country and alt-country, singer/songwriter, world music, zydeco, and many more – and styles both traditional and contemporary.

Money Wolf Music is sponsoring a Kansas City Showcase at the conference which will present live performances by over 30 local professional artists. The artists are a cross-section of the huge pool of talent we have here, and represent many musical genres. The showcase will highlight the quality and diversity of our music scene. It will also put local musicians in direct contact with an international audience of music.

This is a busy week for Money Wolf Music, last night John Statz & Josh Harty just released their collaborative recording with a special show at Czar bar. The two artists were recently signed to KC Recording label, Money Wolf Music.

John Statz & Josh Harty, recorded their new album unrehearsed, live, with no edits, at Silo Sounds on the south side of Denver, on a free day between shows. John and Josh had played Denver the night before, and only had to drive as far as Fort Collins the next.

Josh Harty is originally from North Dakota and John Statz is from Wisconsin.

[Fronted by lead singer/songwriters – Patrick Deveny and Terrence Moore (American Catastrophe, The Black Water). Founding members include Felix Dukes on electric guitar, Jonathan Knecht on drums, Steve Tubbert (Zoom) on bass. Terrence joined The Silver Maggies in 2010 after performing with band at the Murder Ballad Ball. He brought several original songs to add to the repertoire and splits singing and songwriting duties. The band added Amy Farrand (American Catastrophe, Atlantic Fadeout, EIO) on vocals and instrumentation, and Samon Rajabnik on B3 organ. Both artists performed a raucous set at the 2012 Murder Ballad Ball. The album was recorded by Chris Cosgrove at Black Lodge, Cosgrove Audio, WaveLab and Element Recording. Mixing was done in Tuscon, AZ at WaveLab by veteran producer/engineer Craig Schumacher (Calexico, Neko Case, DeVotchKa).]
