  1. Mavis Staples & Levon Helm – “You Got To Move”
from: Carry Me Home / Anti / May 20, 2022 [This follows her 14th studio (solo) album from rhythm & blues and gospel singer, actress and civil rights activist, born in Chicago, Illinois on July 10, 1939. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Mavis Staples, of her family band, The Staple Singers, is a celebrated equal rights activist. She’s performed at inaugural parties for Presidents Kennedy, Carter and Clinton, She began her career with her family group in 1950. Initially singing locally at churches, appearing on a weekly radio show, the Staples scored a hit in 1956 with “Uncloudy Day” for the Vee-Jay label. When Mavis graduated from what is now Paul Robeson High School in 1957, The Staple Singers took their music on the road. Led by patriarch Roebuck “Pops” Staples on guitar and including Mavis and her siblings Cleotha, Yvonne, & Purvis, the Staples were called “God’s Greatest Hitmakers.” With Mavis’ voice and Pops’ songs, singing, & guitar playing, the Staples evolved from enormously popular gospel singers (with recordings on United and Riverside as well as Vee-Jay) to become the most spectacular and influential spirituality-based group in America. By the mid-1960s The Staple Singers, inspired by Pops’ close friendship with Martin Luther King, Jr., became the spiritual and musical voices of the civil rights movement. They covered contemporary pop hits with positive messages, including Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall” and a version of Stephen Stills’ “For What It’s Worth.” Staples was briefly married to Spencer Leak in 1964; they divorced when Staples would not end her music career to stay home. She has no children. In the 2015 documentary Mavis! she reveals that Bob Dylan once proposed to her, and she turned him down. Her initial recordings were as a member of her family group, the Staple Singers. Led by her father Roebuck “Pops” Staples the Staple Singers were major artists in gospel and soul music from 1957 to 1969. Commencing releasing albums as a solo artist in 1969, Mavis Staples has released 13 studio albums, two live albums, three compilations, one soundtrack, one EP, and 51 singles over a career spanning five decades.] [Mavis Staples plays The Lied Center in Lawrence, Kansas on Friday, November 18 at 7:30 PM.]

Video Directed by Dave BrickThe track is modeled after the sweeping, orchestral arrangements akin to the likes of Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazelwood as well as David Axelrod. And in the tradition of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” the song tells the story of the narrator’s plea to a mysterious woman to not steal her lover’s heart. This new single follows the release of Black Light Animals’ full length debut album, Playboys of The Western World released on Groove King Records on July 3, 2020. Black Light Animals played a special Vinyl Release Show at Lemonade Park, Saturday, August 21, with The Freedom Affair. Formed from the ashes of their last band, Instant Karma the new record contains lush pop vocals crooned over spaghetti western riffs, psychedelic synth, and hip hop drums. Playboys of the Western World is a sprawling, decadent examination of what it means to be a human being through the lens of horror movie organs, spaghetti western guitars, hip hop grooves, psychedelic sojourns, and ballads crooned to lovers in the night. 1. Kat King – “With Nothing in My Way”
from: “With Nothing In My Way” – Single / Manor Records / September 30, 2022
[Kat King writes: Written in the peak of lock down after a very necessary break-up, this was one of those songs that kind of “magically” flew out of me. The dichotomy of being locked in my home while also feeling a resounding new freedom was interesting to say the least. It was the first time in a long time that I felt like I could give my whole being into caring about others and prioritizing self-care in a way I hadn’t been able to because I wasn’t caught up in my own afflictions. Musically it became a challenge of how many melodies I could stack on each other without it turning into chaos to really emphasize the feeling of “I can give my energy to whatever I want to.” Any time I play it I try and remind myself to not lose that energy and I hope it does the same for you. Produced by Joel Martin. This new single follows their single “New Sun” released Juy 29, 2022.Led by Kat, on vocals with. Derek Melies on guitar, John Kaul McCain on bass, Daniel Cole on drums, & Kara LePage on keys bring a refreshing dynamism both on and off the stage. Centering on themes of self-care, steadfast friendship, and revitalizing optimism, “New Sun” was a follow up to the June 9, 2021 SAY WHAT YOU MEAN 5-track EP recorded with her band. Co-produced & mixed/mastered by Joel Martin. Lawrence Kansas based singer songwriter Kat King released her last single Song of Spain in 2019 and her single “2017” in, 2018. She released her 5-song EP “Falling Up” on December 1, 2017. Kat King has been creating music since the 2nd grade. She’s produced one 13-song album and three EP’s, the first one released at the age of 14. More info at: http://www.katbking.com]

  1. Elexa Dawson – “Speak Again”
from: “Speak Again” – Single / Lost Cowgirl Records / November 18, 2022
[“Speak Again,” Written by Hon. Jack Markell and Elexa Dawson. This is indigenous Americana songwriter Elexa Dawson’s (Citizen Potawatomi) third single since her debut solo album, Music is Medicine. “Speak Again” is a call to remembering Indigenous languages “near erased.” Somber and driving, the song sparkles with cosmic country depth. Inspired by Robin Wall Kimmerrer’s account of the loss of the Potawatomi language, Braiding Sweetgrass, former Delaware governor Jack Markell composed a poem called “Nine Remain.” He reached out to Kimmerrer seeking a Potawatomi musician to compose and perform the music. The author connected Markell with Dawson, who provided cultural context while putting the lyrics to music. The title evolved to “Speak Again” to offer a vision of a future where the language returns in a meaningful way to Potawatomi communities. Elexa says “In the video three generations of Potawatomi share knowledge across time and space, redefining what it means to truly speak again. The video brings into focus the cycle of giving and receiving between three generations, and includes natural elements of traditional Potawatomi culture and society, and the medicine creatures that bring balance between worlds.” The First Peoples Fund awarded Dawson its 2022 Artist-in-Business Leadership grant to create a video for “Speak Again” in collaboration with Potawatomi animator Nichole Emmons. Emmons combines various forms of stop motion animation to create a rich landscape of Potawatomi imagery for “Speak Again.” The video been selected to premiere on November 18th at the TCL Chinese Theater during LA Skins, Hollywood’s Indigenous Film Festival. Music video releases worldwide Nov 25. Elexa Dawson released her single, “Mother” on October 29, 2021. On April 2, 2021, Elexa Dawson released “New Song” which was #3 on of WMM 15 Favorite Singles of 2021. 1. Brent Windler – “Mr. Sun”
from: New Morning Howl / Brent Windler / August 20. 2021
[Bathed in the warm glow of the sun, Brent Windler’s debut solo record ‘New Morning Howl,’ summons the restrained beauty of his native Midwest. Windler’s pacific harmonies and intricate vocal and instrumental structures capture the polite malaise of Americana as it is lived everyday in mid-sized cities of the heartland. “Leaning out your window, yelling out I need to learn to let go,” Windler sings on the opening track “Around the Bend.” It’s a sentiment that perfectly captures both the sticky sameness of a Midwestern evening and Windler’s own embrace of a sound that is uniquely his own. All Songs Written by Brent Windler. Produced by Brent Windler and Ryan Benton. Recorded and Mixed by Ryan Benton at Courtesy Tone, KCMO. Mastered by Greg Beery, Los Angeles, CA. “Around the Bend” Mastered by Piper Payne, Nashville, TN. Strings arranged by Kaitlin Wolfberg. Horns arranged by Brent Windler and Mark Hamblin. Design and layout by Dallas Gutschenritter and Brent Windler. With Brent Windler on Vocals, Bass, Guitars, Ukulele, Percussion; Ryan Benton on Drums, Percussion, Synths; Nick Siegel on Piano; Joel Pack on Bass; Heidi Gluck on Vocals; Nate Harold on Synths; Joseph Vande Kerk on Guitar,; Kaitlin Wolfberg on Strings; and Mark Hamblin on Horns. From THE DAILY LISTENING – July 9, 2021

Kansas City, MO’s pure xtc – the project from EXNATIONS drummer, Taylor Hughes – is the epitome of lonely night drives. The idea was formed during an extremely isolating time for Hughes during her move to NYC in 2019. As EXNATIONS goes on hiatus, pure xtc allows Hughes to explore darker territories while delving into the highs and lows of adjusting to city life and all that follows.

Debut track, “Ghost,” takes the notion of loneliness, social isolation and anxiety to another level; one the listener can feel if that’s all they’ve known their whole lives. Deliciously haunting as it is relatable, “Ghost” is the perfect introduction to an endeavor that will surely break stigmas surrounding mental health while bringing her community of listeners closer together.

“Have you ever felt alone at a table of friends? Maybe you didn’t even make it to the restaurant because they stopped asking you to hangout, after you’ve said no too many times. Because laying alone in bed with pizza and tequila felt a lot easier than explaining why you ‘look so sad’ all the time. Yeah, I’ve been there. Isolating myself and then wondering where everyone went, turning myself into a literal ghost town.”

“Ghost” was produced and mixed by Walter Kazmier of Silk City Grooves Studio and mastered by Mike Piacentini of Sony Entertainment’s Battery studios.

We are talking with Taylor Hughes about her music project, pure xtc and her new single “Bad Dreams” released September 10, 2021

11:07 – Interview with Eddie Moore & Glenn North

Also with us is our long time friend Glenn North an award-winning poet, activist, educator, and arts executive based in Kansas City. Glenn is Director of Inclusive Learning & Creative Impact at The Kansas City Museum. Glenn North is also regional coordinator of Poetry Out Loud and is an adjunct English instructor and 2006 graduate of Rockhurst University. North is a very active member of the Kansas City community, serving as the poet-in-residence for the American Jazz Museum, executive director of the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Heritage Center, and former director of education and public programs at the Black Archives of Mid-America. Glenn North’s love of language and literature started around his 8th birthday, when his grandmother gave him a copy of “If” by Rudyard Kipling. He remembers his grandmother’s face “radiating with pride” watching him recite the poem from memory, from there he started writing his own poems. North lived in Washington D.C. with friends before going back to school. When he moved back to Kansas City in 1997 he started sharing his poetry and that of others for Verbal Attack at “Mardi Gras” Wednesday nights, once a month, and from there it took off. Glenn earned his M.F.A. from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Glenn has worked for decades teaching poetry to students of all ages, on both sides of State Line. Glenn uses poetry to address issues of social justice, and self-empowerment for disenfranchised students through reflective poetry. Glenn North is a Charlotte Street Generative Performing Artist Awards Fellow. Along with his work at The Kansas City Museum and Rockhurst University, Glenn North has been working in collaboration with the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art on a podcast that talks about community and growth for the future of representation. In addition to presenting poetry. North said he is, “Truly blessed to work as a poet” and that he wants to be a “poet of the people”. For more info: glennnorthpoetry.com

Eddie Moore & Glenn North Thanks for being with us on Wednesday MidDay Medley

Eddie relocated to Kansas City to study under Jazz legend, Bobby Watson at the University of Missouri-Kansas City where Eddie received a M.A. in Jazz Studies.

One of our favorite recordings is CHECK CASHING DAY from Bobby Watson & The I Have A Dream Project (#10 of WMM’s 113 Best Recordings of 2013) where Bobby collaborated with Glenn North. Glenn can you talk about that experience?

Bobby Watson & The I Have a Dream Project released CHECK CASHING DAY on Lafiya Music, Digitally released on – Aug. 28, 2013 / Physically released on Nov. 12, 2013, the recording was in collaboration with Glenn North

From wikipedia.org: “Bobby Watson was born in Lawrence, Kansas, August 23, 1953. he is an American post-bop jazz alto saxophonist, composer, producer, and educator. Watson now has 27 recordings as a leader. He appears on nearly 100 other recordings as either co-leader or in a supporting role. Watson has recorded more than 100 original compositions. Watson grew up in Bonner Springs, Kansas, and Kansas City, Kansas. He attended the University of Miami with fellow students Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius and Bruce Hornsby. After graduating in 1975, he moved to NYC and joined Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. He performed with the Messengers from 1977 to 1981. After the Jazz Messengers, Watson work with many notable musicians, including: drummers Max Roach and Louis Hayes, fellow saxophonists George Coleman and Branford Marsalis, multi-instrumentalist Sam Rivers and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. In addition, Watson has served in a supporting role for a number of vocalists including: Joe Williams, Dianne Reeves, Lou Rawls, Betty Carter, and Carmen Lundy, and has performed as a sideman with Carlos Santana, George Coleman, Rufus and Chaka Khan, Bob Belden and John Hicks. Later, in association with bassist Curtis Lundy and drummer Victor Lewis, Watson started the first edition of Horizon, an acoustic quintet modeled after the Jazz Messengers but with its own slightly more modern twist. In addition to his work as leader of Horizon, Watson also led a group known as the High court of Swing (a tribute to the music of Johnny Hodges), The Tailor-Made Big Band (16 pieces in all) and is a founding member of the 29th Street Saxophone Quartet, an all-horn, four-piece group with alto saxophonist Ed Jackson, tenor saxophonist Rich Rothenberg, and baritone saxophonist Jim Hartog. Watson also composed an original song for the soundtrack of Robert De Niro’s A Bronx Tale (1993). A resident of New York for most of his professional life, Watson served as a member of the adjunct faculty and taught private saxophone at William Patterson University from 1985 to 1986 and the Manhattan School of Music from 1996 to 1999. He is currently involved with the Thelonious Monk Institute’s yearly “Jazz in America” high school outreach program. In 2000, he was approached to return to his native midwestern surroundings on the Kansas-Missouri border. Watson was selected as the first William D. and Mary Grant/Missouri, Distinguished Professorship in Jazz Studies. The past seven years he has served as the director of jazz studies at the University of Missouri–Kansas City Conservatory of Music although he still manages to balance live engagements around the world with his teaching responsibilities. Watson’s ensembles at UMKC have garnered several awards and national recognition.

From DLmediamusic.com: “As Watson reflects, Check Cashing Day serves as “a commentary on where we’ve been, where we are, and where we need to go as a people, as a country, and as a global community.” Watson chose to concentrate on the reason why over 300,000 people, black and white, gathered in Washington, D.C. on August 28, 1963. Dr. King spoke of coming to Washington to cash a 100 year old check, a moral check that the founding fathers wrote into the Declaration of Independence, but to this day, the check keeps coming back marked ‘insufficient funds.’ Introducing poet and spoken word artist Glenn North from KCMO, Check Cashing Day is a concept recording with 15 tracks portrayed in the vein of musical theatre. “I asked Glenn to put some poetry, from his perspective, to several of my compositions, as well as one written by vocalist Pamela Baskin-Watson and two by bassist Curtis Lundy,” comments Watson. “It was my desire with this project to produce poetry that would in some ways cleanse the soul,” notes North. In addition, Watson’s release features trumpeter Hermon Mehari, pianist Richard Johnson, drummer Eric Kennedy, flutist Horace Washington, and trombonist Karita Carter.
