Nick we started the show today with Bandits on The Run

The Pitch is celebrating 43 years as Kansas City publication.

The Pitch started as The Penny Pitch as part of Penny Lane Records. The original editor was Dwight Frizzell. The original owner was Hal Brody. The Pitch has survived the difficult print media landscape, multiple owners, multiple generations of some of Kansas City’s very best writers and journalists, and remains an essential publication, continuing to break important stories about working conditions in area restaurants and theaters, that some of our older news papers have bungled. The Pitch has been the very first to break news that has had international reverberations .

The “Best Of” issue has been part of The Pitch for as long as I can remember, celebrating all things Kansas City.

Brock Wilbur picked up a Pitch “Best of” issue during a visit to KC and it was a big part of his wife and his decision to move to Kansas City from Los Angeles.

The Pitch “Best of” Issue is divided between The “Our Picks” section from The Pitch writers & staff, and the “Your Picks” section, where people of Kansas City cast 679,500 votes in 505 categories, selecting their favorite people, restaurants, creators, businesses, and places. The second half of the issue is fully hands-off from our internal team, and no weight was placed on any of the scales. The winners and runners-up in these categories were 1000% picked by the city after rounds of nomination and voting. http://www.thepitchkc.com

As Brock Wilbur writes in his “Letter from The Editor”: “Does this magazine include every local hero and all that they did? Absolutely not. Is this the definitive list of the only people and businesses that are making a difference? Absolutely not. Is this a parade that we get to throw to celebrate the hard work and unyielding dedication of more people than there is space for naming them? Absolutely yes.”

Brock continues: “This year’s arcade-based theme is that we look at this write-up a bit like the disco cyberspace of a mall games emporium. There’s a marketplace of ideas here, with hundreds of machines to play and so many worlds to see. In each of those spaces, this is a chance for the champions of 2023 to input their initials next to their high score—to be looked upon and adored by all those who step up to try their hand next. But what’s most important here is that these high scores are transitional. This is a city full of new players on the come-up, with quarters stacked next to the screen to indicate that they’ve got next. If your name isn’t sitting at No. 1 in the category where you regularly compete, well, we cannot wait to see what new techniques you bring to the battle in 2024.”

  1. The Whiffs – “Satellites”
    from: Scratch ‘N’ Sniff / DIG! / March 3, 2023
[The Whiffs are: Rory Cameron on vocals & guitar, Zach Campbell on vocals & bass, Joey Rubbish on vocals & guitar, and Jake Cardwell on drums. Recording produced by The Whiffs // Mixed by Steve Squire & Rob Pope at The Green Lodge in Lawrence, KS // Mastered by Steve Squire // Photography by Shawn Brackbill. // On August 4, 2023, The Whiffs released the single “Satellites.” // The Whiffs released the 13 track album Scratch ‘N’ Sniff on March 3, 2023. // The Whiffs released the 14 track album, Another Whiff on December 6, 2019. The Whiffs released their 8-track debut release on March 10, 2017. // The Whiffs are a band from Kansas City, Missouri. “…one of the most accomplished examples of the genre I’ve heard in some time.” — SORRY STATE RECORDS. “This album just feels like America. It transports me to some mythical dive bar where The Replacements, Tom Petty, and Cheap Trick still rule the jukebox. ” — FASTER AND LOUDER // Scratch ‘N’ Sniff by The Whiffs — the second album by Kansas City’s foremost power pop foursome is upon us via Dig! Record Co (US) & Bachelor Records (EU). Not unlike their first album (Another Whiff), and as rock critic Jon Harrison heralds in the album’s liner notes: “this sophomoric offering provides all of the things you love about The Whiffs.” … Now, if you’re asking yourself ‘what do I love about the Whiffs’? Here’s a clue: SONGS. You love The Whiffs’ songs! And now Scratch ‘N’ Sniff’s got 13 new boffo numbers brimming with the hook-laden, never-far-from-the-bar pub-rock snarl The Whiffs nail every time. // The Whiffs are less recording artists than a band of journeymen, from the drums Jake Cardwell (C&C Drum Co.) built-by-hand, to Joey Rubbish’s home recording studio (Club Sandwich). It’s only natural Scratch ‘N’ Sniff is a homegrown production from the floor (tom) up, and was recorded in the band’s living room. The songs are all their own too. Whether penned by Cameron (Rory), Campbell (Zach) or Rubbish (Joey), they all stink of The Whiffs broken-in power pop confectionery. A close listen will reveal the cracks of many-a-can and roommates laughing at vocal takes. As such, everyone’s invited to Scratch ‘N’ Sniff and dive in!

[The Whiffs play the Union Pool, in New York City on Thursday, November 2, 2023]

  1. Glitter Wizard – “She’s A Star”
from: Kiss The Boot / Kitten Robot / Released March 7, 2023
[San Francisco, Califronia based band with Lorfin Terrafor on guitars & vocals, Wendy Stonehenge on lead vocals, Kandi Moon on bass & vocals, Doug Graves on synthesizers & sequinser, Fancy Cymballs on drums & vocals, Screamin’ Lord Duff on vocals, and Geoff Yeaton on saxophone. Recorded by Paul Roessler at Kitten Robot Studios. Additional engineering and mixing by Screamin’ Lord Duff at Toneduff Studios. Mastering by Mark Chalecki at Little Red Book. Pre-production engineering by Kwame Korkor. Photos by Rob Williamson. Set styling by Audrey Taylor. Makeup and hair by Audra Angeli-Morse. Layout by Roy G. Biv. All songs written by Glitter Wizard except “Suffragette City” by D. Bowie. // The EP is something of a departure for the band, as they lace up their platforms and head straight for the jugular of early ‘70s glitter rock and junkshop glam. // Julian Cope once described Glitter Wizard’s unique brand of freak rock as “unashamedly glamorous hard rock,” and he’s not wrong. These San Francisco longhairs from another dimension were raised on punk and mix screaming riffs with a high-octane stage show full of sequins, headbanging and a sonic attack that’ll leave you dazed and ready for the next hit. Imagine the Stooges stole the outfits from the Spiders from Mars, synth man Dik Mik from Hawkwind and hit the stage on a speed bender.]

Yet, as of late, places like Oklahoma City, Louisville and Kansas City have become hubs of creativity spawning new bands and thriving scenes. The latter being home to Perfume USA, a band that has become a staple in their region opening for bands like Candy, Heart Attack Man and Greet Death, each of which Perfume USA somehow fit perfectly on the bill with.”” // “”From their heavy and punchy riffs, to their pop hooks and droning fuzz scattered throughout their songs, listeners can’t help but get lost in their music, which is sure to resonate with fans of Nothing, Narrow Head, Far, Deftones, and Smashing Pumpkins. 1. A Giant Dog – “I Believe”
    from: Bite / Merge Records / August 25, 2023
[Austin Texas, based A Giant Dog is Andy Bauer on guitar; Andrew Cashen on guitar, keyboards, vocals; Daniel Blanchard on drums, percussion, vocals, and one guitar note; Graham Low on bass, and Sabrina Ellis on vocals, & keyboards. All songs by A Giant Dog. Recorded at LA CUVE STUDIO, Angers (FR). Engineered by ELLIOT ASCHARD & STW. Mixed by John Congleton. Mastered by Dan Coutant, Sunroom Audio. Produced by A Giant Dog. Backing Vocals by: Maxime Dobosz, Océane Rémy, Emilia Richman, and Geena Spigarelli. Strings by: Liz À la Ligne, Abraham Quivooij, and Graham Low. Keyboards, Knobs by: Shaun Dickerson. Guitar solo on “Different Than”: STW // The moment the needle drops on Bite, one’s conception of what an A Giant Dog record sounds like bends like space and time around a starship running at lightspeed. // The biggest point of departure is that Bite is a concept album, concerning characters who find themselves moving in and out of a virtual reality called Avalonia. You’re thrown into it quickly, as a calm, robotic voice says, “Welcome to Avalonia, happiness awaits inside” over a crushing synth line that segues into an opulent string arrangement. // The songs on Bite are full of bombast, at turns calling to mind the spacefaring operatic rock of Electric Light Orchestra and the high drama of an Ennio Morricone film score. The album’s narrative sweep is epic in scope, its characters facing impossible odds and certain doom, existing as comfortably with the sci-fi grandiosity of Thin Lizzy’s Jailbreak as it does with the high fantasy of Dio and Iron Maiden. A Giant Dog is raucous ear candy culled from the hook-driven melodies of Slade, the glammy swagger of Marc Bolan, the morbidfantasy of Killer-era Alice Cooper, and the unpredictable wit of Sparks. These songs are by, for, and about the losers, freaks, and outcasts. The lonely. The terminally horny. Boozehounds and party animals. More info at: http://www.agiantdog.com]

MMF has provided needed preventative care services through their health clinic events & partnerships with local providers. 11:44 – More Interview with Sondra Freeman

We are talking with Sondra Freeman about Apocalypse Meow 16, Saturday, November 4, at 7:00 PM at recordBar, 1520 Grand Blvd., KCMO, with The Phantastics, Nathan Corsi & My Atomic Daydream, The Philistines, and True Lions. Apocalypse Meow started in 2008, when musician Abigail Henderson faced daunting financial hurdles after being diagnosed with breast cancer. The event features live performances by notable Kansas City-area bands as a donation of their time and talents to their community; local businesses and artisans donate products and services to the event for auction. All monies raised during Apocalypse Meow go directly to Abby’s Fund for Musician’s Health Care and the production costs of Apocalypse Meow. Performances, business donations, and services are purely voluntary.

“Abby believed that music can take you to where you need to be and that it’s important, and the people that do that need to be taken care of.” – Sondra Freeman

Abby’s Fund for Musicians’ Health Care was named for Abigail Henderson (1977-2013).

Death Notice from St. Louis Post Dispatch: Abigail Hope Henderson the Kansas City vocalist who started a nonprofit organization to help musicians pay health-care costs, died on Tuesday, August 27, 2013 of cancer at her home. She was 35. For more than a decade, Abigail was the lead singler of several area bands: Trouble Junction, The Gaslights, Atlantic Fadeout, and Tiny Horse. In 2008 she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had health insurance, but the cost of the treatments prompted her and husband Christopher Meck, to start the Midwest Music Foundation which raised funds to help area musicians pay health care costs. “Medical bills can throw you into poverty in a week – in one day,” she said. “There’s nothing like standing in your kitchen opening a hospital bill for $63,000.00 in one day and $47,000.00 the next. After a while you don’t want to open them anymore. Who can pay that?”
