WMM presents: Cheyenne Jackson + HuDost + She Speaks in Tongues

Mark spins more New & MidCoastal releases from: True Lions, Malek Azrael and Sisterbot, She Said, Saving Miles Lemon, Be/Non, HuDost, Stereolab, Cheyenne Jackson, and Valerie June.

At 10:30 we welcome Kate McCandless who performs as SHE SPEAKS IN TONGUES. Kate writes: “My work is about reclaiming agency. It is about giving voice and liberation to what was repressed and silenced.” Described by Sasha Geffen as “Best Feminist Rock n’ Roll Exorcism”. Armed with body, voice, and a fierce, shamanic energy, SHE SPEAKS IN TONGUES often lures with nostalgia – simultaneously embracing and questioning its comfort and authority with a dark, feminist bent. McCandless creates and performs her work solo, and in collaboration with other musicians. The effect is jarring, haunting, and a cathartic call to healing. A transplant from Chicago since 2020, McCandless now calls Kansas City her creative home base. SHE SPEAKS IN TONGUES shows coming up: The Benefit for Amplify Lawrence Saturday, May 31, at 8:00pm at The Bottleneck, 737 New Hampshire St., Lawrence, KS. with Sisterbot, Lauren Lovelle, True Lions, and Cheery. // And – TQ Headquarters House Show, May 10, 6:30pm, KCMO with: Drew Black, Fenwa Teryen, Emily Davis. // And – SHE SPEAKS IN TONGUES submits: SUPPOSED FORMER INFATUATION JUNKIE//Alanis Morissette, May 13, at The Black Box, 1060 Union Ave, KCMO with Katie Gilchrist and Project1994 performing JAGGED LITTLE PILL. At 11:00 Mark welcomes Moksha Sommer & Jemal Wade Hines of the band HuDost, who join us in our 90.1 FM Studios just before their show at Greenwood Social Hall. We will feature songs from their new album THE MONKEY AND THE CROWN, that marks the band’s 20th Anniversary. Many years before receiving praise from NPR, ranking on the Billboard charts, or winning prestigious awards, something magical happened; a teenaged Moksha Sommer was reading the lush words of the Persian poet Rumi in her Montreal apartment and wildly decided to join friends for a spur of the moment trip to North Carolina for a Rumi Festival put on by Turkish Sufis. It was there that, from across a room of dancers, Jemal Wade Hines was playing frame drum and heard Sommer’s voice cutting through the crowd and jolting his heart awake. That moment was the beginning of HuDost. HuDost play Greenwood Social Hall, Thursday, May 29 at 7:00pm. More information at: http://www.hudost.com
