Vanessa Severo, Thanks for being with us on Wednesday MidDay Medley
We could probably do an entire hour just on Vanessa and her life, and only scratch the surface, but her family is from Brazil, she spent formative years growing up in Germany, and ended up studying theatre at UMKC. Vanessa shared with us how she fell in love with Kansas City.
On SHIPWRECKED! AN ENTERTAINMENT
The Los Angeles Times called this “vaudevillian romp with radio theatre overtones”
New York Times wrote that this play “springs to life like a theatrical pop-up book”
Playwright Margulies, says the play is “about the very nature of artifice and storytelling.”
‘The adventures of Louis de Rougemont – as told by himself’ was the publishing phenomenon of the 1890s. In his autobiography, which was serialized in Wide World magazine, Englishman de Rougemont described his incredible thirty-year adventure lost in the vast, unexplored Australian outback. He sailed the high seas and met exotic islanders, flying wombats, giant sea turtles and an enormous man-eating octopus. Or did he?
Charles Fugate stars as Louis de Rougemont with Bob Linebarger and Megan Herrera playing all other roles in Donald Margulies’ SHIPWRECKED! AN ENTERTAINMENT – THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF LOUIS DE ROUGEMONT (AS TOLD BY HIMSELF).
Lighting design is by Nicole Jaja. Sound effects are created and performed onstage by Linebarger and Herrera. Gary Campbell designs costumes and props, the latter inspired by found objects.
SHIPWRECKED! premiered in 2007 at South Coast Repertory, with productions at Long Wharf Theatre, Geffen Playhouse in L.A. and Primary Stages in NYC.
SHIPWRECKED! AN ENTERTAINMENT, a Spinning Tree Theatre production, plays January 19 – February 5, 2017 at Just Off Broadway, 3051 Penn Valley Drive in Kansas City, Missouri Tickets and performance schedule available by calling Central Ticket Office (816) 235-6222 or at http://www.spinningtreetheatre.com.

11:00 – Station ID & Presidential Inauguration Alternatives
11:00 – Interview with Amy Farrand & Judy Mills
In our second hour, we offer information about Presidential Inauguration Alternatives. Starting tomorrow on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, members of the Kansas City progressive and arts communities have created events for anyone wishing to turn off their corporate TV news, and instead be engaged by local gatherings designed to create community and give a voice to the opposition and fear of the oncoming Trump Presidency. Most of these events are benefits for area not-for-profit organizations that need our help, especially in these times.
Getting us started are our next guests, Amy Farrand, a veteran of the Kansas City music scene, is the lead singer and songwriter for her critically acclaimed new band, Amy Farrand and The Like, who are currently in the recording studio, working on their first record to be released this Spring. Also with us is, Judy Mills who made that leap of faith from a very successful career in corporate retail opened Mills Record Company, three and a half years ago to sell new vinyl records. Last July Mills record Company settled into their new home at 4045 Broadway, just a few blocks away from our studios here at 90.1 FM.
Amy Farrand and Judy Mills are here to share the details about a special benefit for the Rose Brooks Center (a refuge for domestic violence victims) this Friday, January 20 starting at 6:30 PM, at Mills Record Company, 4045 Broadway Blvd, with Katy Guillen & the Girls, members of Bohemian Cult Revival and Sister Mary Rotten Crotch. This is a feminine product drive. All donations go to the Rose Brooks Center.
Amy Farrand & Judy Mills thanks for being with us again on Wednesday MidDay Medley.
I love the whole idea about this benefit show. Can you talk about how this got started?
We talked about how there is a certain amount of justice in the Kansas City music scene. When disaster falls upon us, it is almost certain that someone in the music community will rise up and organize a benefit show.
Friday night’s event is a feminine product drive to help those at the Rose Brooks Center (refuge for domestic violence victims). $10 suggested donation at the door, or $5 with an unopened feminine product. All donations go to the Rose Brooks Center.
Katy Guillen & the Girls at 6:30 pm

This is a feminine product drive. All donations go to the Rose Brooks Center.
We talked with Judy Mills about the state of vinyl. Since Mills opened on May 3, 2013, several other record stores have opened including: Revolution Records, Josey Records, Records With Merritt, Brothers Music, along with Vinyl Underground at Seventh Heaven, It’s A Beautiful Day and Renaissance Records in Overland Park. And retail outlets like Half priced Books and Barnes & Noble are now selling new vinyl, it would appear that our community of music lovers is able to support all of these outlets, where just 9 years ago all of our record store were dying. It was a good holiday season for vinyl records.
Rose Brooks Center provides emergency shelter to women and children escaping life-threatening abuse. Once they are safe, these families receive the tools and resources they need to begin rebuilding their life – a life built on respect, love and compassion.
If this is an emergency, please call 911. If you are in a crisis, please call us at 816-861-6100. http://www.rosebrooks.org
