[The complete soundtrack recording of Laurie Anderson’s newest film, Heart of a Dog. Anderson was recently commissioned by the European TV network Arte to create a feature film — her first in 30 years. Her response was a personal essay entitled Heart of a Dog, a work encompassing joy and heartbreak and remembering and forgetting, at the heart of which is a lament for her late beloved piano-playing and finger-painting dog Lolabelle. Scenes range from realistic footage from the animal’s life to imagined scenes of Lolabelle’s passage through the bardo. It also includes other reflections on life and death including Anderson’s experiences in life in downtown New York after 9/11. The Nonesuch album is the full audio recording of the film, including all music and spoken text. Heart of a Dog has been shown at the Telluride, Venice, and Toronto Film Festivals to critical praise, with the New York Times calling it a “philosophically astute, emotionally charged meditation on death, love, art and dogs.” The movie will be screened at the New York Film Festival on October 8, before opening theatrically at New York’s Film Forum October 21. It also will be shown on HBO in early 2016. ]

11:30 – Interview with Jerry Harrington

Jerry Harrington is the man behind the local treasure known as The Tivoli Theatres, established in 1983 as Kansas City’s original, art house, bringing audiences the best in independent cinema, now at 4050 Pennsylvania, KCMO. Jerry Harrington joined us on Wednesday MidDay Medley to talk about the critically acclaimed new film, written, directed, produced and scored, by Laurie Anderson, HEART OF A DOG opens at The Tivoli Theatres on Friday, November 13. More information at: http://www.tivolikc.com

Laurie Anderson was our guest for a live interview on Wednesday MidDay Medley on October 5, 2011, prior to her October 9, 2011, performance at The Kauffman Center For The Performing Arts. In that show she performed “In The Air” one of the stories featured in HEART OF A DOG that deals with her beloved rat terrier, Lolabelle. The story related to hawks flying from the sky, attempting to take Lolabelle as prey, but in this story it is clear that Laurie Anderson is exploring several themes, including the event of 9-11 in New York City with the Twin Towers coming down, and our post 911 world. This beautiful film is not just about Laurie’s dog Lolabelle.

Lolabelle, dogs, death, family, mother, government surveillance,

68 year old Laurie Anderson is know as a pioneer in electronic music, and in multimedia performance art, however show began he career as a film maker.

In 2010 Laurie Anderson released her First studio recording in over 10 years Homeland on Nonesuch Records. Most of the songs had been road tested over the past two years while on tour. Co-Produced by Roma Baran and husband Lou Reed who plays electric guitar on a few songs.

When we lost Lou Reed on October 27, 2013, his wife Laurie Anderson, wrote eloquently about the final moments of Lou’s life. One of the things many of us learned, if we hadn’t already, was that Laurie and Lou were/are practicing buddhists. HEART OF A DOG deals with many elements of buddhism including “the bardo” where after death according to the Tibethan Book of The Dead, all creatures spend 49 day in the bardo, which is not really a place but rather a process.

“Acclaimed musician & performance artist Laurie Anderson presents her meditation on love and death in this playful, lucid and heartbreaking nonfiction feature dedicated to Anderson’s late husband Lou Reed. Anderson draws upon her childhood experiences, Buddhist principles and her political beliefs as she lovingly tries to help her beloved terrier Lolabelle.”

We are playing selected tracks from the complete soundtrack recording of HEART OF A DOG available from Nonesuch Records.

The Tivoli and Records With Merritt, 1614 Westport Road, are teaming up to give one lucky Laurie Anderson fan the opportunity to win an autographed film poster of HEART OF A DOG.

The Tivoli Theatres, Kansas City’s original, art house, bringing audiences the best in independent cinema, at 4050 Pennsylvania, KCMO, as been simulcasting live broadcasts, and presenting films about Art Museums and Art Exhibits, as well as special Opera performances, concerts, and plays.

The Tivoli is also the home of several film festivals, including Out Here Now – The Kansas City Lesbian & Gay Film Festival.
