[New 7 song EP from Katy Guillen & The Drive, the latest project dedicated to Guillen’s songwriting that is founded on the creative spark and chemistry between Katy Guillen & Stephanie Williams. With Guillen on guitar & vocals and Williams on drums, the two sculpt a sound that recalls bands like Led Zeppelin, The Bangles, and Band of Skulls. In 2012, Guillen & Williams formed Katy Guillen and The Girls, and began to build a foundation of touring and recording that carried them through six years and produced three full-length albums: Katy Guillen & the Girls, Heavy Days, and Remember What You Knew Before. Between 2012 and 2018, they traveled the United States extensively, performed at the International Montreal Jazz Festival, toured Sweden, and supported major acts like The Doobie Brothers, Robin Trower, and Heartless Bastards. In these 6 years playing together, Guillen & Williams created a dynamic, sound informed by Guillen’s mesmerizing, emotive guitar style and poignant arrangements, and an equally captivating live show that showcased Williams’ technical, melodic style, resulting in a powerful on-stage chemistry. In addition to the compelling synergy formed by years of playing together, the two developed a method of working together on Guillen’s songs that only deepened their artistic connection, propelling them to forge a path to a new plateau in their music. KG & The Drive push ahead with a melodic, heavy, and soulful sound while maintaining the edge of the artist’s rock ‘n’ roll and blues roots. Guillen calls their genre-bending style “indie soul-rock.”]

Betse Ellis is originally from Fayetteville, Arkansas. She received her Bachelors of Arts in Music and a Bachelors of Arts in English, from the University of Missouri – Kansas City. She has been playing the Violin for over 40 years, with over 20 years playing fiddle and also working as a teacher of music. Betse was one of the founding members of the critically acclaimed and internationally known band, The Wilders. Betse has released two solo records, and for the last several years is recording and performing with her partner, multi-instrumentalist Clarke Wyatt, as Betse & Clarke. Betse Ellis is also part of the Short Round Stringband, the 5-piece band that last year released a 14-track album called, Ain’t No Part of Nothin’ that is a musical tribute to Bill Monroe.

Marion Merritt is our most frequent contributor to WMM, She grew up in Los Angeles, and St. Louis. She went to college in Columbia, Missouri. She studied art and musical engineering, and is a avid lover of classic films and punk rock music. She saw Talking Heads on their first U.S. tour when they played One Block West in 1978. For 16 years she has been sharing her musical discoveries and information from her musically-encyclopedic brain on Wednesday MidDay Medley. Marion has joined us for every on-air fund drive to help raise funds for the MidCoast Radio Project. With her partner Ann Stewart, Marion is the proprietor of Records With Merritt, at 1614 Westport Rd. in Kansas City, Missouri. Records With Merritt features new vinyl releases, in-store performances from young and upcoming bands, holds meetings for a vinyl listening club, and was once the location for a wedding, and a 30th birthday party. Ian Dobyns plays drums and Chase Horseman plays bass. Nan Turner is one half of the critically acclaimed band Schwervon! Nan has been called the “Lucy Ricardo of Indie Rock.” She also performs as Nan & The One Night Stands. Nan wrote on Facebook about her new EP: “This whole thing started out as an experiment, but I have to say I’m proud as hell with how it turned out. I was just going to record one or maybe two songs. Welcome to my FIVE SONGER!!! Some songs were written out of heartbreak and some just made me laugh. Just doing this was transformative, it was cathartic. I allowed myself to “write bad songs”. I highly recommend doing that because there’s bound to be a gold nugget somewhere in the bunch if you give yourself permission. My guitar and I got reacquainted. We were “dancing in the dark.” I’ve never quoted Bruce Springsteen before, but also I didn’t know I was going to record this EP, so you know. I had the luxury of working with Chase Horseman every week or two, giving myself time to add and rework stuff. I took the slow road and enjoyed the process. Chase has great ears and is ubertalented in his own right. 7. The Roseline – “Better to the Bone”
from: GOOD / GRIEF / King Forward Records / to be released April 3, 2020
[From the 6th album of the Lawrence, KS, based alt-country, Americana, rock band, formed by Colin Halliburton with friends in 2005. The songs were born, largely, in response to the death of Halliburton’s best friend (and keyboardist in The Roseline), as well as the loss of his mother-in-law to suicide. Additionally, the album explores themes of love & marriage, the grieving process, elder millennial existential dread, politicized rage, drugs, and mortality. Beyond simply the lyrics, they have added sonic textures that have not previously been explored, thanks to the addition of guitarist Bradley McKellip, bassist Colin Jones, and keyboardist and vocalist Heidi Gluck. Drummer Jim Piller and guitarist Kris Losure have returned as solid mainstays of the band. Guest appearances from lap steel player Mike Stover, pianist Dan Loftus, and vocalist Chase Horseman widen the sonic spectrum even further. The album was recorded, engineered and produced by Joel Nanos at Element Recording Studios in KCMO. The new album follows the September 29, 2017 release “Blood,” and the June 19, 2015 album, “Townie.” The band has toured the US and Halliburton has completed two European solo tours thus far, taking him through Poland, Germany, Belgium, and The Netherlands. 8. Krystle Warren & The Faculty – “Tuesday Mornings”

[Originally from KC, Krystle learned to play the guitar by listening to Rubber Soul & Revolver from The Beatles. Krystle graduated from Paseo Arts Academy in 2001 and began her musical career in collaborating with area jazz and pop musicians. After living in San Francisco and NYC, Krystle was signed to a French label, Because Music, and moved to Paris to release “Circles” in 2009. Krystle played French and British television programs, including Later with Jools Holland, garnering critical acclaim and traveling all over the world with Rufus Wainwright, Nick Cave, Norah Jones, and Joan As Police Woman. Krystle created, Parlour Door Music, to release “Love Songs: A Time You May Embrace” a recording from a 13-day session in Brooklyn, where she recorded 24 songs live with 28 musicians including her band, The Faculty, alongside choirs, horn and string sections.]

9. Thighmaster – “Dick Simmons”

[Thighmaster is a Lawrence, Kansas based band formed by Maxfield Yoder (formerly of the bands: Dean Monkey & the Dropouts, Plains) on guitar & vocals, Max Lock on vocals, Max Smith on tambourine & vocals, Esteban Gomez –on bass, Jennifer Graham on drums, and Jake Little on guitar. Thighmaster recently signed with KC based label High Dive Records. The band is resurrecting the song-writing demons that have long haunted Mayfield Yoder. Thighmaster truly is garage pop for cool grandparents. Now you too can have shapely thighs in minutes a day. Tracked, Mixed and Mastered by Ross Williams and written by Thighmaster.]

Though the Pedaljets core trio of Allmayer, bassist Matt Kesler, and drummer Rob Morrow has remained a constant throughout their tenure as a band, they’ve worked with multiple lead guitarists throughout the years, with Twist The Lens being the first record to showcase their newest addition, Cody Wyoming. Bringing in Wyoming, and working alongside Malinowski, allowed the new songs to benefit from a fresh and outside perspective, while still keeping the album within the Pedaljets family. It also lent itself to a more utilitarian process where, as Allmayer describes, “We would constantly listen back and ask ourselves, ‘Are you hearing something this song needs?’ We were really focused on pushing ourselves to make the best music we can and being extra critical.” To round out the team, the band brought in veteran producer John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., Kurt Vile) to mix the record and reunited with Archer Prewitt (The Sea and Cake) whose artwork has adorned the last three Pedaljets album covers.]

Mike Allmayer, Matt Kesler, & Cody Wyoming thanks for being with us on Wednesday MidDay Medley

Studio legend John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, Kurt Vile) mixed the album, and Archer Prewitt (The Sea And Cake and The Cocktails) provided the artwork.

Once hailed as “Kansas City’s answer to The Replacements,” the Pedaljets formed in the mid-80s and immediately began touring the United States nonstop, gaining critical acclaim and support slots with some of the decade’s biggest acts, but never becoming a household name on their own.

After releasing two LPs, 1988’s “Today Today” and 1989’s “Pedaljets,” the band split up.

After laying low for a few years, Allmayer and Morrow formed the band Grither and signed with MCA before Morrow decided to go back to school and relocate to Scotland.

Kesler owned and operated the KC vintage music shop Midwestern Musical Company, selling gear to artists including St. Vincent, The Arcade Fire, Jason Isbell and more.

The Pedaljets couldn’t stay apart forever though, and returned in 2008 with a re-recorded version of their self-titled album and a rekindled hunger to perform..

20 years later, the band came back together in 2008, to give that album a proper, remastered release. Working with producer Paul Malinowski playing lead guitar, the band’s reunion led to “What’s In Between” in 2013, the band’s first album of new material in 23 years.

6 years later, “Twist The Lens” their 4th full-length, is the first to feature new guitarist Cody Wyoming (The Philistines), while previous guitarist Paul Malinowski served as producer.

13. The Black Mariah Theater – “Patron Saint”

[Follow up to their November 2019 single “Got No Luck.” The Black Mariah Theatre released their debut EP “Black Hearts” On July 22, 2017. The Black Mariah Theater is made up of twin sisters Sophia Motta on vocals and guitar, and Analiese Motta on drums. Their genre-bending funky drum beats, jazzy guitar tones, and tell-it-like-it-is lyrics create a rock n roll show perfect for anyone who’s had a bad day, a lonely night or a broken heart. A Kansas City-based duo, The Black Mariah Theater’s sound has been described as “eclectic.” Mixing jazzy guitar tones with funky drum beats and angsty lyrics, old jazz comes into the modern world. 14. Millage Gilbert w/ The Creighton Organization – “Nothin’ I Can Do” (CD #14) (5:02)

[Living legend, Millage Gilbert in 77 years old and has deep roots in Kansas City and Mississippi. Born in Jackson, MS, he grew up watching such legends as John Lee Hooker, Little Milton, and Howlin Wolf. At 17, he joined Elmore James’ band. A KC resident since 1962, Gilbert has performed with Little Hatch and Sonny Kenner, and has performed in Europe. He told an interviewer: “I was born in Madison County, Mississippi, near Tougaloo, south of Ridgeland, north of the city of Jackson, Mississippi, May 24, 1938 [Ed. Note – His birth certificate states May 25, 1938, but Gilbert insists he was born on May 24, 1938.] My mother was born Dora Scott in Clarksdale, Mississippi. I was grown up from a family of 14. 15. Gang of Four – “Natural’s Not In It”

[Debut album from Gang of Four, an English post-punk band, formed in 1976 in Leeds. The original members were singer Jon King, guitarist Andy Gill, bass guitarist Dave Allen and drummer Hugo Burnham. There have been many different line-ups including, among other notable musicians, Sara Lee, Mark Heaney and Gail Ann Dorsey. After a brief lull in the 1980s, different constellations of the band recorded two studio albums in the 1990s. Between 2004 and 2006 the original line-up was reunited; Gill was the only remaining original member prior to his death on 1 February 2020. The band plays a stripped-down mix of punk rock, funk and dub, with a lyrical emphasis on the social and political ills of society. Gang of Four are widely considered one of the leading bands of the late 1970s/early 1980s post-punk movement. Their debut album, Entertainment!, was ranked as fifth greatest punk album of all time and at Number 483 in Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. The album was listed by Pitchfork Media as the 8th best album of the 1970s. Their early 80s albums (Songs of the Free and Hard) found them softening some of their more jarring qualities, and drifting towards dance-punk and disco. David Fricke of Rolling Stone described Gang of Four as “probably the best politically motivated band in rock & roll.” In 2011 we played from “Content” Gang Of Four’s 7th full-length album released January 25, 2011 on Yep Roc and their first studio record in 16 years from the punk-funk, post-punk agitators, formed in 1977. They went on to release more: What Happens Next (Metropolis/Membran, 2015) and Happy Now (Gill Music Ltd, 2019).] [Andrew James Dalrymple Gill was born January 1, 1956 and died February 1, 2020. He was a British musician and record producer. He was the lead guitarist for the British rock band Gang of Four, which he co-founded in 1976. Gill was known for his jagged style of guitar on albums such as Entertainment! (1979) and Solid Gold (1981) and hit singles such as “At Home He’s a Tourist,” “Damaged Goods,” “Anthrax,” “What We All Want” and “I Love a Man in a Uniform”. In addition to his work with Gang of Four, Gill was also a record producer, and produced or co-produced all of the band’s albums. He also produced albums for artists such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Jesus Lizard, the Stranglers, the Futureheads, Michael Hutchence, Killing Joke, Polysics, Fight Like Apes, Therapy? and the Young Knives. Gill was born in Manchester, England, UK, on 1 January 1956. Gill was married to Catherine Mayer, a journalist and the co-founder of the Women’s Equality Party. Gill was often confused with The Independent’s music critic, also named Andy Gill. Gill’s death was announced by Gang of Four on February 1, 2020. He was 64. A band’s spokesperson told the New York Times the cause of death was pneumonia.]
