I met Anne Winter in February 1989. I asked her for items from her window that I could use as props at The Unicorn Theatre, she gladly started handing me things. My path crossed with Anne’s on the issues of censorship and free speech. The Greater Kansas City Coalition Against Censorship, sprang from Anne’s relationship with Richard & Linda Rostenberg, and so many others, and Anne created Culture Under Fire usually in April, lasting 10 days or so, involving lots of bands and music venues and performance artists and writers and teen poets, and zine editors, and activists and artists, all celebrating culture and free speech.

Anne Winter made a BIG difference, in my life, and in so many lives, and in our community. She connected people, cultivated events, nudged her friends closer to their dreams, making realities happen. I remember when she picked me up in her van, and drove me to Sandstone, put a wrist band on my arm and pushed me into the Spoken Word tent at Lolapalooza, or when she asked me to be Stage Manager for a show at The Uptown featuring Michael Moore, Iris DeMent and The Wilders. Anne was so staggering in her service to humankind, that it feels like she is still conducting her work, even after passing from this physical world. Is she collaborating with the higher frequencies?

I know I’m not alone, when I confess, that there are times when I feel her gentle encouragement or her beneficial honesty offered during a difficult decision. I hear her suggestion on the playlist, “can you include Calexico?” I see the relationships and connections she fostered, and all of us, who love her, are connected. I witness the meaningfulness of her beautiful life, in a world where it all goes… really fast.

I recently saw her son Max at YJ’s. David said, “look, there’s Max.” He has grown taller. He and his sister Eva, they love their mother so very much. And they have a beautiful father… Kurt von Schlemmer we love you, and send our best wishes to you and your family.

Today we start our show by remembering Anne Winter, with six songs from: The Pixies, Talking Heads, Calexico, The Flaming Lips, Loose Cannon Brass Band, and Iris DeMent, and intermingled with the music, are words from four friends: Lisa Cordes, Tim Kearns, Billy Smith, and Iris DeMent, and even a little bit of Anne herself.

These are excerpts from our 100th show, March 22, 2006 – a Tribute to Recycled Sounds.

We observe that on this day, in this moment, it has been five years.

24 year old Calvin Arsenia balances his classical training with his love of the avant-garde. His mutiple collaborative projects have taken him on many adventures and Calvin recently returned home to Kansas City after living and performing in Edinburgh, Scotland. Standing at 6 foot 5 inches, Arsenia strikes a commanding presence complimented by his equally powerful vocal capacity and his abilities playing piano, guitar and harp. He also works as a songwriter, composer, lyricist, producer, and engineer. Calvin Arsenia made his debut as a performer in early 2010 and since then he has written, arranged and produced 5 EPs. Earlier this year in April, he release a 7-song EP called “Moments” and now is set to release a new EP “Prose,”a collection of new songs inspired by his own personal revival. Calvin Arsenia performs his acoustic show in pubs and local venues around the city, sharing his soaring and soulful vocal range.

Calvin Arsenia plays Thursdays, 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Simply Reinspired in Olathe, KS.

[Singer-songwriter and guitarist from Melbourne, Australia. In 2012 Barnett started her own label, Milk! Records, and released her first EP I’ve Got A Friend Called Emily Ferris to glowing reviews around Australia. From 2011 – 2013 Barnett was a member of Australian psych/country band Immigrant Union, a musical project founded by Brent DeBoer of The Dandy Warhols and Bob Harrow. Along with sharing vocal duties Barnett predominantly played slide guitar and features on their second studio album ‘Anyway’. DeBoer also played drums on her first EP ‘I’ve Got A Friend Called Emily Ferris’. Barnett received international critical acclaim in 2013 with her second EP How To Carve A Carrot Into A Rose. Barnett combined these two releases into one and called it The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas.]

90.1 FM Station Manager – Barry Lee is a busy guy, in just the past 9 months, he has produced benefit shows in tribute to Pete Seeger, another in tribute the The Byrds,. Barry Lee helped foster 90.1 FM’s collaborations with Folk Alliance International, the creating a Kickstarter campaign to fund remote broadcasting equipment to allow KKFI the ability to broadcast live from the Conference, and from fundraisers, and other events. Barry Lee also helped to bring Bill Sundahl on board as a new staff member, and foster 90.1 FM’s bigger role in the Crossroads Music Fest (CMFKC). He also helped cultivate the development of two of 90.1 FM’s newest and very popular radio programs: River Trade Radio, and The Boogie Bridge.

The song “Does Your Hometown Care?” was on the soundtrack to the 1997 film Suburbia.]

from: Stage [Live] / RCA / September 8, 1978
[Stage is David Bowie’s second live album, recorded on the Isolar II world tour, and released by RCA Records in 1978. First UK pressings were on translucent yellow vinyl and some European pressings were also available on blue vinyl. Though it was rumored at the time that this would be his final outing with the label, following dissatisfaction over the promotion of Low and “Heroes”, Bowie would in fact remain with RCA until 1982. The recording was culled from concerts in Philadelphia, Providence and Boston, USA. It primarily included material from Bowie’s most recent studio albums to that date, Station to Station, Low and “Heroes” but, in a surprise show of nostalgia, also featured five songs from The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Aside from Bowie’s core team of Carlos Alomar, Dennis Davis and George Murray, band members included ex-Frank Zappa sideman Adrian Belew on guitar, Simon House from Hawkwind on electric violin, Roger Powell, best known for his work with Todd Rundgren in the group Utopia, on keyboards and Sean Mayes on piano, string ensemble and backup vocals. All would reunite the following year on Bowie’s next studio LP, Lodger. Generally considered more relaxed than Bowie’s previous live album, David Live (1974), Stage was praised on its initial vinyl release for the fidelity with which the band was able to emulate in concert the electronic and effects-filled numbers from Low and “Heroes”, as well as for the singer’s vocal performance. However, it was criticized for lacking a ‘live’ atmosphere, thanks to the recording being largely taken from direct instrument and microphone feeds which increased sound quality but minimized crowd noise. The original concert running order was also changed, with fades between tracks similar to a studio album.]

Formed in 2005, the band self-released several EPs between 2007 and 2011. In 2012 the group was signed to Jagjaguwar Records.]

5. Scott Hrabko – “Blurry Marie”

[Kansas City based, singer-songwriter Scott Hrabko has played with Kansas City’s oldest garage band, The Original Sinners, as well as various incarnations of the 1980s bands: The Splinters, and The Andersons. In the 1990s he performed with Iris Dement and Howard Eisberg. Said to be 30 years in the making, Scott Hrabko released his new album, “Gone Places” in November of 2013. For nearly 5 years Amy has served as host/curator/producer for Weirdo Wednesday Supper Club, a monthly showcase you can find on stage – TONIGHT, October 15, at Davy’s Uptown Ramblers Club. Tonight’s show features special guests: The Silver Maggies, a critically acclaimed “super group” of musicians, where Amy plays theremin, percussion, guitar, & sings. Amy Farrand also performs and records as a solo artist, she plays drums & sings with Sister Mary Rotten Crotch, and she plays guitar & sings with Amy Farrand and the Gospel Sensation. Amy Farrand talked about setting up for tonight’s Weirdo Wednesday Supper Club, the work involved, and how after 5 years she was ready to move on to new experiments.

Originally Amy did the Weirdo Wednesday show every week, and then after a hiatus she brought it back as a monthly event, and now after nearly 5 years she is getting ready to end the series.

Davey’s Uptown Ramblers Club is a venue where Amy has played live music since she was 15 years old, in her first bands.

Tonight’s Weirdo Wednesday Supper Club features The Silver Maggies fronted by lead singer/songwriters – Patrick Deveny and Terrence Moore (American Catastrophe, The Black Water). Founding members include Felix Dukes on electric guitar, Jonathan Knecht on drums and Steve Tubbert (Zoom) on bass. Amy Farrand (American Catastrophe, Atlantic Fadeout, EIO) on vocals and additional instrumentation.

In 2012 Amy released her solo EP, “Amy Farrand (Loves) You,” to critical acclaim. It was on our list of The 112 Best Recordings of 2012. One of our favorite songs from that release is “How You Feelin'” a song that features Ernie Locke on harmonica.

[Fronted by lead singer/songwriters – Patrick Deveny and Terrence Moore (American Catastrophe, The Black Water). Founding members include Felix Dukes on electric guitar, Jonathan Knecht on drums and Steve Tubbert (Zoom) on bass. Terrence joined The Silver Maggies in 2010 after performing with them that year at the Murder Ballad Ball. He brought several original songs to add to the repertoire and splits singing and songwriting duties. This spring the band added Amy Farrand (American Catastrophe, Atlantic Fadeout, EIO) on vocals and additional instrumentation, as well as Samon Rajabnik on B3 organ. Both artists performed on “My Pale Horse” and joined the band for a raucous set at the 2012 Murder Ballad Ball in Kansas City. The album was recorded over the last year by Chris Cosgrove at Black Lodge, Cosgrove Audio, WaveLab and Element Recording. Mixing was done in Tuscon, AZ at WaveLab by veteran producer/engineer Craig Schumacher (Calexico, Neko Case, DeVotchKa).]

10. Goat – “Hide From The Sun”

[Goat is a Swedish alternative and experimental fusion music group. Currently based out of Gothenburg, they claim to hail from Korpilombolo in Sweden which, according to the band’s own publicity, has a history of voodoo worship after a witch doctor came and lived there. Supposedly, when Christian crusaders came and destroyed the village the surviving people fled and placed a curse on the town. This has been described as “a lovely story, if possibly not entirely rooted in reality.” The band started playing music when they were children, as part of a local community tradition, and there have been many incarnations of Goat who have recorded over the last “30 or 40 years”. There are now three original “core” members of the band, from Korpilombolo, but in live concerts they are augmented by four other performers from Gothenburg.]

Fela Kuti was born October 15, 1938 and died August 2, 1997. He was a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, musician, composer, pioneer of the Afrobeat music genre, human rights activist, and political maverick.

Fela Kuti was born October 15, 1938 and died August 2, 1997. He was a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, musician, composer, pioneer of the Afrobeat music genre, human rights activist, and political maverick. Afrobeat, a style he largely created is a complex fusion of Jazz, Funk, Ghanaian/Nigerian High-life, psychedelic rock, and traditional West African chants and rhythms. Afrobeat also borrows heavily from the native “tinker pan” African-style percussion that Kuti acquired while studying in Ghana with Hugh Masekela. The importance of the input of Tony Allen (Fela’s drummer of twenty years) in the creation of Afrobeat cannot be overstated. Fela once famously stated that “without Tony Allen, there would be no Afrobeat”. Afrobeat is characterized by a fairly large band with many instruments, vocals, and a musical structure featuring jazzy, funky horn sections. A riff-based “endless groove” is used, in which a base rhythm of drums, muted West African-style guitar, and melodic bass guitar riffs are repeated throughout the song.

Created out of a cross-breeding of Funk, Jazz, Salsa and Calypso with Juju, Highlife and African percussive patterns, it was to him a political weapon. [Critically acclaimed singer songwriter Sara Swenson has released some of our most played and favorite recordings of the last 7 years. Her self titled debut recording was originally released in 2008 and was at the top of our list of The 100 Best Recordings of 2009. In 2010 Sara Swenson released her second full length recording, “All Things Big and Small” again working with Don Chaffer in Nashville who added new layers to Sara’s great songs and voice. In November of 2011, Sara released her 5 song EP called “Never Left My Mind,” featuring her band, The Pearl Snaps. In that time frame, she also had picked up two Kansas City Singer-Songwriter of the Year awards, performed with Sarah McLachlan’s Lilith Fair, and placed a song on the season finale of ABC’s “Private Practice.” Then after the school year ended in 2012, Sara Swenson left her job as a High School English and Journalism Teacher in Platte County High School, and flew off to the United Kingdom, where she ended up getting married to her husband. This spring, Sara returned to Kansas City and performed for the Folk Alliance International Conference. This summer she released her fourth studio album that captures snapshots of her 18-month experience of living abroad, moving from dating to marriage and sorting through the accompanying transitions and emotions. Terrie Johnson, is a senior editor at Sullivan Higdon & Sink, and she is also a well-known blogger, filmmaker and gay rights activist. Terrie was raised in a conservative faith in the deep South. Terrie spent her life in hiding, consumed by guilt and shame because of her sexuality. Terrie’s plan to commit suicide was interrupted, and she eventually came out to her children, family and friends. With her son Brad Johnson, Terrie is creating a documentary about the life of Nate Phelps, the son of Fred Phelps, Jr., former leader of the notorious Westboro Baptist Church. Terrie and Nate will both be speaking at “God and Gays – Isn’t it time for a different conversation?” – a special Coming Out Day Event, this Saturday, Oct. 11, at 1:00, at The Center For Spiritual Living, 1014 West 39th Street, Kansas City, MO. Terrie will share her story of coming out at age 52 and her work to promote acceptance of self and others. Nate Phelps will share his story of leaving home at 18, escaping the persecution of his family, and his new role as a gay rights activist.

The forum will be led by Dr. Chris Michaels, Senior Minister at CSL, with special guest Nate Phelps, son of Fred Phelps, Jr., former leader of the notorious Westboro Baptist Church. Nate Phelps will share his story of leaving home, escaping the persecution of his family, and his new role as a gay rights activist.

Terrie Johnson talked about the persecution she received from her church when she “came out” at 52. She talked about meeting Nate Phelps, and how she and her son Brad became motivated you to make a documentary film about his life.

The film is “Not My Father’s Son,” 40 to 50% of the filming is completed, and that Terrie has been funding the film from her own resources.

October 11 is National Coming Out Day. Terrie Johnson, “came out” in August 2012 to your close friends and family, and then she wrote a “coming out” blog on January 1, 2013. “Coming Out” was a very brave thing for her to do. She was immediately asked to leave her church. Her national speaking engagements were cancelled, and she was denounced from the pulpit and called an “abomination.” Her courageous story and clear honesty has made a big difference to so many, and in some cases has made a life and death difference for some of the people she has touched with her story.

Terrie described how she has navigated the waters of this amazing adventure she has been on in these past two years.

Terrie talked why “Coming Out” is so important for all of us.

Judy Mills is a native of Pittsburg, Kansas. She attended Kansas State, where she earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English. Judy Mills worked as a teaching assistant, and an adjunct professor, teaching writing and English. She worked at Johnson County Community College. She worked as an account executive for Clinique, and then worked for several years at Restoration Hardware, until the Leawood store closed and she took a hiatus. Judy Mills left the world of corporate retail to focus on her new vision, and in early May, 2013, she opened, Mills Record Company, at 314 Westport Rd, KCMO. This Saturday the store reveals it’s new expansion with the addition of the nextdoor space which will double the size of the store and provide a space for the giant collection of used vinyl Mills Records has been hoarding in their secret storage facilities.

Judy Mills joined us to discuss Mills Record’s new expansion, and the opening of their new space on October 11.

“Broken Teeth is the third release on the label and will be the first in the newly created Home-Fi Series on Haymaker. The Home-Fi Series provides an official release for special home recordings, demos, long-lost rarities and one-offs.

Schwervon! is a two-piece indie-pop rock group consisting of guitarist Matt Roth and drummer Nan Turner. They share vocal duties and also are a couple. After two years of whirlwind touring and Matt’s father Harry’s lung cancer diagnosis, Schwervon! found themselves moving from their Lower East Side apartment in New York City to a basement in a Kansas City suburb. Frustrated with the process of writing new material, Matt and Nan started reworking songs off of their third album, 2006’s I Dream of Teeth, giving it new life through a raw acoustic treatment. The result defies logic: a more vulnerable sound and yet somehow more kinetic.

Schwervon! worked out six songs from I Dream of Teeth, as well as two cover songs, including one by The Vaselines, a group they toured with in 2011, and another by one of their favorite NYC artists, The Purple Organ. The songs for the new stripped down project, dubbed Broken Teeth, were recorded in Schwervon!’s basement practice space in Shawnee, Kansas. The project is an evolution in sound that stands as a symbol for the rebirth Matt and Nan experienced joining Kansas City’s burgeoning art and music scene. It’s also a celebration of renewal, as Matt’s father is now in remission.

Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear consist of Madisen Ward and his mother, Ruth Ward. Madisen was born in Oklahoma, and grew up in the outskirts of Kansas City, Missouri. He graduated from William Chrisman High School in 2007. Madisen’s journey to become a musician, was “melodically passed down” through the songs of his mother. In 2012 the duo released their EP, “We Burned The Cane Field.” They first played LIVE our show on July 10, 2013, and returned later, to help us celebrate our 500th show. With aspects of folk, blues, spiritual, soul, their music overflows from category because it is so heartfelt, rich, and incredibly special. They were the buzz of the Crossroads Music Festival in early september and have caught the attention of the local music scene with stellar performances this past spring and summer at Unity Temple, Davey’s Uptown, recordBar, Coda, Westport Saloon, and The Buffalo Room.

But people across the country are also taking notice of Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear, with the duo’s recent shows in: St. Louis, Joplin, and Muscle Shoals, Alabama, opening for Phosphorescent. Last week they played the Americana Music Festival in Nashville, in a special “invite only” showcase in the Blue Room at Third Man Records where Adam Gold of Rollingstone.com wrote, “The duo’s raw, inscrutable chemistry was in full effect as they handily made a case as an inevitable force to be reconed with in the days to come.”

Next week Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear will open for BB King, on Wednesday, October 1, at The Midland Theatre, in Kansas City.

Two weeks ago we were writing about how Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear were the buzz of the Crossroads Music Festival, but since then they’ve also become the buzz of the Americana Music Festival in Nashville where they’ve captured the attention of the national music press. Madisen AND Ruth told us about the Third Man Records / New Port Folk showcase, and about how they weren’t aware that the room was packed with industry insiders, they just wanted to give the people a good show.

Adam Gold of rollingstone.com who was present in the room wrote, “Watching mother-and-son duo Ruth and Madisen Ward bring a-hundred-or-so tastemakers and industry insiders to collective awe-struck silence with a stunning set of soulful coffeehouse folk at an invite-only showcase in the Blue Room at Third Man Records, it was hard to believe this was one of the virtually unknown group’s first gigs outside its native Kansas City. Drawing on influences ranging from Tom Waits to Tracy Chapman for fully realized, stellar songs marked by tranquil acoustic guitar interplay and singer Madisen Ward’s otherworldly tenor — a sundry palette of colors with which the 26-year-old painted character-driven scenes of small-town Midwestern life, emoting like a young, falsetto-capable Paul Robeson — the duo’s raw, inscrutable chemistry was in full effect as they handily made a case as an inevitable force to be reckoned with in the days to come.”

Madisen and the Mama Bear just recently signed on with the William Morris Endeavor Agency. They now have a national agent who will represent them and guide them with touring and recording projects.

Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear are doing a lot more touring, getting out on the road, and have written enough new songs that they are ready to get into the recording studio.

The Duo’s recent show at the Americana Music Festival was a return trip for Madisen and Ruth because back in August they traveled through Nashville on their way to Muscle Shoals, Alabama, to perform for a showcase, and open for Phosphorescent.

Next week Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear will open for BB King, on Wednesday, October 1, at The Midland Theatre, in Kansas City.

Madisen Ward grew up listening to his mother play in coffee houses around the country. He started playing guitar in his later teen years and then started singing.

Madisen talked about how after high school he started writing songs for he and his mother to perform together.

Ruth you told the Deli KC that you were “learning a lot from my son while enjoying the process as well. I feel like we’re tackling music in ways I never have before.”

Ruth told us during the interview that on her way into the studio this morning she told Madisen that she trusted him, and that she hasn’t always been able to say that about other musical collaborators in her life.

The Kansas City based band, The Sexy Accident, led by guitarist and singer/songwriter Jesse Kates, decided to release their fifth LP, Lavender 3, as a 48-page, 9-inch square silver cloth-covered hardback book featuring fourteen works of visual art, complete lyrics, interviews with the band, and exclusive photographs. There will be a Book/Album release show on October 4, at 7:00 pm , at the Buffalo Room. Tulsa’s Kalyn Barnoski and Rachel La Vonne will opening the show at 8:00 pm, followed by The Sexy Accident at 9:00 pm. Animator Galadriel Thompson of DarkHeart Girlfriends Club will project her visions on unfurled bolts of muslin. Paintings by Steph Toth Kates Art will also be displayed.

Joining us from the band were: Jesse Kates, Camry Ivory, Kristin Smith with artist Galadriel Thompson.

Jesse, talked about why the band decided to release The Sexy Accident’s 5th full length release as a 48 page hardback book.

This is the band’s 3rd full length release working with famed Seattle producer Steve Fisk.

Camry Ivory joined the band in 2010 and has now worked on 2 EPs and 2 full length recordings with The Sexy Accident and also with producer Steve Fisk. Camry talked about working with Steve.

Camry has been performing a lot as a solo artist and is also as part of the group, I Found A Job, playing the music of Talking Heads, as well as Anna Cole and the Other Lovers, and several other bands. Camry talked about how she had a chance to grow in the band and is now singing lead vocals on several tracks.

Jesse talked about how Kristin Smith brought a lot to the record. How Kristin really helped steer a lot of the suspensions, and sevenths, and things like that. “We’ve got a lot more harmony, and the chords are richer than they were on the last record. A lot of that was Kristin’s influence. That was what she brought.”

Kristin talked about how, like Camry, this was her first band.

In the interview in the book Steve talks about “The weaving of the keyboards, all of the keyboard arrangements that went down live, in most of the situations, which for me is always going to be musically superior. They’re all metric and rhythm related, and locked with the guitar parts. You could certainly overdub them to make them right, but if you get all of that going in a room with live drums, it makes it one step closer to Memphis.”

Galadriel Thompson is an animation artist and who will be projecting her images throughout the room the night of the album/book release show.

Laura Diggs, Guest DJ – Joey Grimm, and Jules Slutsky

Joey Grimm was born in Kansas City, Missouri and raised in De Soto, Kansas. He became interested in making moving sculptures as a result of tinkering with cars and learning how engines operate. For over ten years, Grimm worked with kinetic sculptors Jim Woodfill, Graham Lane, and Mac MacClanahan on projects ranging from small kinetic sculptures to producing high speed art cars. After receiving his BFA from the Kansas City Art institute in 2010, he attended the Masters of Fine Arts program at the University of Delaware where he is researched and producing kinectic sculpture. After completing his studies, Grimm moved to Brooklyn in New York City, where Joey has started his own business with artist Jordan Johnsoin called Made In Americana, a custom building company, creating various objects and funiture. Jules Slutsky is a native of Brooklyn, her parents were artists and she is a photographer.

Laura Diggs is an artist now based in Sante Fe, New Mexico.

11. Talking Heads – “Nothing But Flowers”

[Talking Heads were an American rock band formed in 1975 in NYC and active until 1991. The band was comprised of David Byrne (lead vocals and guitar), Chris Frantz (drums and backing vocals), Tina Weymouth (bass and backing vocals) and Jerry Harrison (keyboards, guitar, and backing vocals). Other musicians also regularly made appearances in concert and on the group’s albums. The new wave style of Talking Heads combined elements of punk rock, art rock, avant-garde, pop, funk, world music, and Americana. Frontman and songwriter David Byrne contributed whimsical, esoteric lyrics to the band’s songs, and emphasized their showmanship through various multimedia projects and performances. Critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine described Talking Heads as being “one of the most critically acclaimed bands of the ’80s, while managing to earn several pop hits.” In 2002, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Four of the band’s albums appeared on Rolling Stone magazine’s 2003 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.]

12. The Clash – “Lost In The Supermarket”

[Produced by Guy Stevens, it is credited to the Strummer/Jones songwriting partnership. It was released on their third studio album. Although it features Mick Jones on lead vocals, the song was written by Joe Strummer. The supermarket in question was The International, located at 471-473 Kings Road, beneath the World’s End Estate. 31 Whistler Walk was where Joe lived at the time with his girlfriend Gaby Salter, her two younger brothers and her mother.]

13. Neil Young – “Unknown Legend”

[20th studio album by Neil Young. Many of the musicians appearing on it also appeared on his 1972 album Harvest, and it is considered by many to be like a “sequel” to Harvest. Recovering from a case of tinnitus that had come about after the recording of 1990’s Ragged Glory and its subsequent tour (which produced 1991’s Weld and Arc), Young was determined to return to the studio. Returning to Nashville and joining up with compatriots like Ben Keith, Young put down the electric guitar, returning to the acoustic guitar, piano and banjo that had dominated albums such as Harvest, Comes a Time and Old Ways.The album earned the 1994 Juno Award for album of the year.]

14. David Bowie – “Space Oddity”

[released as a music single in July 1969. It is about the launch of Major Tom, a fictional astronaut. Besides its title, which clearly alludes to the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, the introduction to the song is a barely audible instrumental build-up that is analogous to the deep bass tone in Also Sprach Zarathustra that is prominently used in the film. The lyrics have also been seen to lampoon the British space programme. The song appears on the album David Bowie (also known as Space Oddity). The song was awarded the 1969 Ivor Novello Award, together with Peter Sarstedt’s “Where Do You Go To (My Lovely)?”. “Space Oddity” became so well known that Bowie’s second album, originally released as David Bowie in the UK (like his first album), was renamed after the track for its 1972 reissue by RCA Records, and has since become known by this name. It was used by U2 during their 360° Tour (2009-2011). It was played over the public address system preceding the band’s arrival on stage. In 2013, the song gained renewed popularity after it was covered by Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, who performed the song while aboard the International Space Station, and therefore became the first music video shot in space. This video was removed from YouTube on May 13, 2014: despite Bowie’s explicit wishes that Hadfield be fully licensed to record the song and produce the video, the song is owned — and its copyright controlled — by Bowie’s publisher, who granted Hadfield license to the song for only one year. Bowie would later revisit his Major Tom character in the songs “Ashes to Ashes” and “Hallo Spaceboy”. German singer Peter Schilling’s 1983 hit “Major Tom (Coming Home)” is written as a retelling of the song.]
