5. Iris DeMent – “Listening to Singing”
from: The Trackless Woods / FlariElla / August 7, 2015
[6th album from Grammy nominated Iris DeMent who NPR said was ”one of the great voices in contemporary popular music.” The Trackless Woods sets 18 poems by acclaimed 20th century Russian poet Anna Akhmatova to life. Hailed as one of Russia’s finest poets, Akhmatova survived the Bolshevik Revolution, both World Wars and Stalin. She lost family, friends & fellow writers to political killings and labor in the gulags. When Iris randomly stumbled upon Akhmatova’s work in a book of poetry a friend sent as a gift, she was immediately taken by the sorrow and burden of the poems, juxtaposed with Akhmatova’s lightness and transcendence in the face of inhumanity. ”Anna’s gift of song is so strong, about alI I had to do was get really quiet and listen,” says Iris. After reading that first poem the melodies began pouring out of her, and before she even fully understood what was driving her, Iris was gathering musicians & friends, including co-producer Richard Bennett (Emmylou Harris, Neil Diamond, Steve Earle), to record ‘The Trackless Woods’ in her living room over 5-days. The result is a pairing of piano and voice in Iris’ style with timeless melodies that are rooted in the American South. On Oct 2, 2012 Iris released Sing The Delta. The album was a return to the roots of her mother, who had recently passed. The album was #1 on WMM’s 112 Best Recordings of 2012.]

[Iris DeMent plays Knuckleheads, 2715 Rochester St, KCMO, Saturday, November 2, at 8:00 PM with Pieta Brown.]

We had tacos to see if we liked each other.”]

10:30 – Interview with Julie Berndsen, Brandon Phillips, Adam Phillips

We just heard Other Americans with their song “Salt Mines’ form their new EP OA2. Other Americans is a Kansas City/Lawrence based 4 piece band made up of: Julie Berndsen on lead vocals, Adam Phillips on drums, Brandon Phillips on guitar, and Michelle Bacon on bass. Other Americans EP OA2, was produced by Brandon Phillips, engineered by Joel Nanos, and recorded at Element Recording Studios in Kansas City. We talk with 3 of the members of the band about their new music

Julie Berndsen, Brandon Phillips, Adam Phillips thanks for being with us on WMM

Brandon Phillips was last on Wednesday MidDay Medley on April 3, 2019 when Too Much Rock released the Brandon Phillips and The Condition single “People Talk.”

Brandon, Zach, & Adam Phillips come from an artistic family. Their father was a jazz musician, playwright, and actor and their mother an art teacher. The brothers started by playing AC/DC covers, but moved on to original songs and a broader range of influences. In 1991 they formed their first band and a 14-year-old Brandon led his younger brothers Zach & Adam into a seedy bar in KC to play their first gig to the small crowd of locals. In 1997 the brother’s a ska and rock & roll band, The Gadjits, released their debut album, Da Gravy on Yo’ Grits, on their own JoCo Ska label. They recorded five full length albums on Hellcat Records, Thick Records and an unreleased album for RCA Records. They played The Vans Warped Tour, and supported the Skatallites, Rancid, Let’s Go Bowling.

In 2004 The Gadjits ended and the brothers formed a new band called The Architects who have released six full length albums and two EPs, including The Border Wars graphic novel/EP series, on which they worked with illustrator Mallory Dorn.

The Phillips brothers found that the music they were making for The Architects was changing and moving in new directions. Rather than disappoint longtime fans of The Architects with new sounds, they instead created new musical projects to explore new musical territory they wanted to play. These new journeys include: Other Americans with Julie Berndsen (formerly of the Latenight Callers) on lead vocals, Brandon Phillips and The Condition with Brandon on vocals, and Radar State where Adam plays drums. The first Other Americans EP included brother Zach Phillips on bass, and former Gadjit member Ehren Starks who was brought in by Brandon to play keyboards with Brandon Phillips and The Condition and ended up helping to write songs for the Other Americans debut EP released last year. Julie Berndsen sings backup vocals in Brandon Phillips and The Condition, an ensemble that changes based on availability of musicians and family.

Other Americans came together when a mutual friend and Kansas City producer Joel Nanos introduced Brandon Phillips to vocalist Julie Berndsen. As Brandon told Nick Spacek of Pitch Kansas City, “We were all looking for something new to do musically. The way I remember it, a mutual friend (Joel) told me that Julie was looking to start something new and I sent her a note about it. We had tacos to see if we liked each other.”

“We had never met,” Phillips says of that first interaction. “So, we had to do the weird, sit-down, getting to know you: ‘What kind of records do you like? Is it okay if I double dip?’”

“I didn’t know that Brandon was into electronic dance stuff as much as he was,” Berndsen says, “so that was really exciting.”

“A big portion for the idea of this band, before it even started, was that it was supposed to be very different from the other stuff that we’ve done,” says drummer Adam Phillips.

Hailing from the musical hotbeds of Kansas City, MO, and Lawrence, KS, the electro-alternative OTHER AMERICANS are comprised of members of such regional luminaries as The Architects, Latenight Callers, The Philistines, Radar State and Brandon Phillips and The Condition.

    12. HMPH! – “40 Tubesteaks”
    from: HMPH! / Haymaker Records / November 15, 2019
[Ryan Lee Toms on guitar, Jonathan Thatch on drums, Kitten Adventure Boggs on bass. HMPH!’s second album, the self-titled “HMPH!” features their signature math-rock sound with a progressive rock and avant-jazz twist. The songs on HMPH! are more sprawling than on 2015’s Headrush, with lots of detours and left turns along the way. Recorded by the band in their home recording studio, the album had time to evolve, and the complicated arrangements materialized through this process. This album also features heavy bass lines provided by Kitten Boggs, a significant addition since their first record. This album is a choose your own adventure of abrupt rhythm changes, dissident chords, or even about-face genre-hops into funk, punk, or samba. “HMPH!” is a different kind of album from a different kind of band.]

    Congratulations on the new album.

We just heard “40 Tubesteaks” the opening track from the new album. Opening tracks are sometimes great introductions to an interview about a new album.

HMPH! was recorded by the band in their home recording studio, so the album had time to evolve, and the complicated arrangements materialized through this process.

One of the biggest differences between the band’s 2015 debut Headrush and the new album is the addition of Kitten Adventure Boggs on bass.

Kitten Adventure Boggs has actually been with the band for several years now.

Kitten Adventure Boggs is also the Creative Director for PLY Magazine (plymagazine.com) a quarterly periodical, and source for spinning knowledge, and technique, going beyond the basics, to reflect a global community, and explore this fiber arts passion.

Ryan Lee Toms, Jonathan Thatch, and Kitten Adventure Boggs thanks for being with us on Wednesday MidDay Medley.

Their debut full-length “Headrush” was released on limited edition cassette and vinyl in April, 2015 by Haymaker Records. Aside from going from a duo to a trio how has the band changed in these last 4 years.

Ryan Lee Toms, Jonathan Thatch, Kitten Adventure Boggs wrote all the music.

Ryan Lee Toms is also known for his musical recordings with FACEFACE a hip hop duo with Paul Nyakatura. Ryan is also as RLT, an experimental / Dance / Electronic Band consisting of Ryan Lee Toms and John Bersuch, recording on RUSTY RECORDS with: Loop heavy electronic psych-rock with intense rhythmic backgrounds. RLT relies heavily on spastic electronic loops and intense drum rhythm. At times it can sound swirly and fun and others dark and gritty, all while driving a complex under rhythm that can change frantically. RLT is a long ever changing project.

Jonathan Thatch is also a drummer, DJ, and farmer at Shade Tree Collective, an urban farm on 33rd Street with his wife Rachel Hogan.

Kitten Adventure Boggs is also the Creative Director for PLY Magazine (plymagazine.com) a quarterly periodical, and source for spinning knowledge, and technique, going beyond the basics, to reflect a global community, and explore this fiber arts passion.

HMPH! is the three-piece math-rock outfit of Ryan Lee Toms (RLT), Jonathan Thatch, and Kitten Boggs. As an instrumental group with guitar, bass, drums, looping pedal and effects, the ingredients are simple but the result is not. Using staples of the math rock genre, such as technical patterned guitar riffs, odd time signatures, and herky-jerky start/stops, the songs greet your ears with a jarring wake up call. A unique sense of melody and structure cement a listening experience filled with unlikely anthems.

HMPH!’s second album, the self-titled “HMPH!” will be released worldwide on November 15, 2019d.

The album features album artwork by Ryan Lee Toms and Kitten Boggs and was pressed on CD and translucent green vinyl with digital download included. The LP includes a bonus re-working of the track “Trudge Dredge” from the first album.

Sondra Freeman thanks for being with us again on WMM.

The Midwest Music Foundation is proud to present the 12th Annual Apocalypse Meow to benefit Abby’s Fund for Musicians’ Health Care.

Abby’s Fund for Musicians’ Health Care was named for Abigail Henderson (1977-2013).

From St. Louis Post Dispatch: Abigail Hope Henderson the Kansas City vocalist who started a nonprofit organization to help musicians pay health-care costs, died on Tuesday, August 27, 2013 of cancer at her home. She was 35. For more than a decade, Abigail was the lead singer of several area bands: Trouble Junction, The Gaslights, Atlantic Fadeout, and Tiny Horse. In 2008 she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had health insurance, but the cost of the treatments prompted her and her husband Christopher Meck, to start the Midwest Music Foundation which raised funds to help area musicians pay health care costs. “Medical bills can throw you into poverty in a week – in one day,” she said. “There’s nothing like standing in your kitchen opening a hospital bill for $63,000.00 in one day and $47,000.00 the next. After a while you don’t want to open them anymore. Who can pay that?”

3. Marvin Gaye – “Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler) [Live at the Kennedy Center Auditorium, Washington, D.C., 1972]”
from: What’s Going On (Live) / Motown / October 18, 2019
[Marvin Gaye What’s Going On Live is the only live performance by Marvin Gaye of his landmark 1971 album What’s Going On — his first concert for four years. Recorded at the Kennedy Center in his home town of Washington DC during the city’s Marvin Gaye Day on May 1, 1972 and then shelved for decades, it was released on CD in 2001 as part of the expanded deluxe edition of the album, but it has never before been issued on vinyl or as a CD in its own right. What’s Going On Live has been newly mixed by John Morales at M+M Mix Studios and mastered by Alex Abrash at AA Mastering. Its vinyl debut is in black 2LP and limited 2LP turquoise editions with deluxe gatefold packaging. The vinyl and CD packages of What’s Going On Live include rare images from Gaye’s performance as well as new liner notes by his biographer, David Ritz, who describes it as “an invaluable and vibrant historical document marking a milestone in the artist’s career.” The album includes the only known live recordings of Gaye performing four songs: ‘That’s The Way Love Is’ and ‘You’ (which opened the Washington concert as part of a meditative 13-minute medley), ‘Right On’ and ‘Wholy Holy.” A delay in switching reel-to-reel tapes during the concert meant that his performance of the What’s Going On hit ‘Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)’ was not successfully recorded. ‘Wholy Holy’ is now available for streaming and immediate download with pre-orders of the album. Marvin Gaye Day began with the Motown idol’s speech to students at Cardozo High, the school he had himself attended. Then a motorcade took Gaye and his parents to various other locations around Washington, including the office of city mayor Walter Washington, who presented Gaye with a key to the city. Then came a VIP reception at the US House of Representatives’ Rayburn House Office Building, before Gaye took to the stage of the Kennedy Centre at around 11pm. It was his first live show since 1968, and he gave only one other brief performance in the year of 1972 the following month, a short set in Chicago on 27 September which was filmed and recorded for the documentary Save the Children. Gaye later told Ritz about the withdrawal from performing that followed the tragic early death of his friend and Motown recording partner Tammi Terrell. “I understood that I’d been punishing myself by staying away so long,” he said. “I’d been denying myself love, and that’s one of the most foolish things a man can do.” Of Marvin Gaye Day, he added: “It was certainly the biggest day of my parents’ life. Here they came to Washington in the thirties without a penny, and their son was being honoured by the mayor as some sort of hero. At least on this one day I felt like I made Father proud.”

This is history. This birthed what you guys listen to today, because you know rap is nothing but the blues’ grandchild.]

8. Joan Shelley – “Coming Down for You”
from: Like The River Loves The Sea / No Quarter Records / August 30, 2019
[Joan Shelley was born in 1985,. She is a songwriter and singer from Louisville, KY. She draws inspiration from traditional and traditionally-minded performers from her native Kentucky, as well as those from Ireland, Scotland, and England, but she’s not a folksinger. Her disposition aligns more closely with that of, say, Roger Miller, Dolly Parton, or her fellow Kentuckian Tom T. Hall, who once explained—simply, succinctly, in a song—“I Witness Life.” Since the 2015 release of her fourth album Over and Even, Shelley has crossed the country and toured Europe several times as a headlining artist, joined by guitarist Nathan Salsburg and sharing shows with the likes of Jake Xerxes Fussell, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Doug Paisley, Daniel Martin Moore, the Other Years, and Michael Hurley. She has opened for Wilco, Chris Smither, Andrew Bird, and Richard Thompson. Jeff Tweedy produced her 2017 record “Joan Shelley” at The Loft in Chicago. She’ll be familiar to readers of guitar-centric magazines for having appeared, in the same season, on the covers of Fretboard Journal and Acoustic Guitar. Her latest album, “Like the River Loves the Sea,” was released to wide acclaim in Uncut magazine, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, Mojo, and Q magazine. Her second album, Ginko, and third album Farthest Field (with Daniel Martin Moore) were released in 2012 on Ol Kentuck. In 2014, Shelley released her fourth album, Electric Ursa, on No Quarter Records. In 2015, Shelley released her fifth album, Over and Even, on No Quarter. In 2017, Shelley released her eponymous sixth album. Her seventh album, Like the River Loves the Sea, was released in 2019. ]

[4th album from Angel Olsen who was born January 22, 1987. She is an American singer-songwriter and musician from St. Louis, Missouri who currently lives in Asheville, North Carolina. At age three, Olsen was adopted by a foster family that had cared for her since shortly after her birth. The difference in years between her and her parents left an impression. “Because there are so many decades of difference between us, I became more interested in what their childhood was like,” she says of her parents, both of whom still live in St. Louis. “I fantasized about what it was like to be young in the ’30s and ’50s, more so than other kids my age.” Olsen explained that “my mother just has this capacity for children.” Despite early adolescent aspirations to be a “pop star”, her interests later shifted in high school. Olsen became more introverted, regularly attending punk rock and noise music shows at the Lemp Neighborhood Arts Center and the Creepy Crawl as well as Christian rock shows throughout the city. She began learning the piano and guitar and writing her own music. Two years after graduating from Tower Grove Christian High School, Olsen moved to Chicago. After releasing her first EP, Strange Cacti, and a debut album, Half Way Home, on Bathetic Records, Olsen signed with Jagjaguwar, ahead of her first full-band record, Burn Your Fire for No Witness, which was released on February 17, 2014. Olsen’s third full-length album, My Woman, was released on September 2, 2016. In addition to her work with Bonnie “Prince” Billy and The Cairo Gang, Olsen has collaborated with a number of other notable figures of American indie rock, including Tim Kinsella of Cap’n Jazz, LeRoy Bach of Wilco and Cass McCombs. Her collaboration with Kinsella and Bach, as well as with Chicago poet Marvin Tate, resulted in the album Tim Kinsella Sings the Songs of Marvin Tate by Leroy Bach Featuring Angel Olsen which the group released on Indianapolis label Joyful Noise Recordings on December 3, 2013. Her song “Windows” was featured in the final episode of the Netflix original series 13 Reasons Why.]

13. J.S. Ondara – “Saying Goodbye”
from: Tales of America / Verve / February 1, 2019
[J.S. Ondara is a Kenyan singer-songwriter whose debut album, Tales of America, was released on February 15, 2019 via Verve Label Group. J.S. Ondara was born in August 1992 in Nairobi, Kenya. As a child, he wrote poems and stories as well as songs despite not having an instrument to play them on because his family couldn’t afford one. He was inspired by Radiohead, Nirvana, Death Cab For Cutie, Jeff Buckley, Pearl Jam, Guns N’ Roses, and Bob Dylan. He grew up listening to rock songs on his older sisters’ battery-powered radio. Having discovered The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan following a dispute with a friend over whether Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door was a Guns N’ Roses song, Ondara resolved to travel to the United States to pursue a career in music. In February 2013, after winning in the green card lottery, he moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota at the age of 20. He taught himself to play guitar and perform during open mic nights. Eventually, he decided to study music therapy in college, but dropped out of school to return to playing small shows at coffee houses after attending a concert. After moving to Minnesota, Ondara tried his hand at making music and performing in small venues. His big break came when Minneapolis radio station KCMP 89.3 The Current played one of his songs on air by pulling audio from his YouTube channel, where he had been uploading covers of his favorite songs. At the time, he was going by the name Jay Smart. Ondara’s debut album, Tales of America, was released in February 2019 by Verve Label Group. Despite only 11 tracks making the final tracklist, Ondara wrote more than 100 songs for the album, all based on an immigrant’s life in America. The album was produced by Mike Viola of the Candy Butchers. In support of the album, Ondara embarked on his first headlining tour in March 2019. After the release of the album, Ondara debuted on Billboard’s Emerging Artist chart at No. 37 in March 2019. The album also landed on the Billboard Heatseekers Album, Americana/Folk Album Sales, and Rock Album Sales charts. He was nominated for Best Emerging Act at the 2019 Americana Music Honors & Awards. Ondara cites Bob Dylan as his musical hero, which is why he chose to live in Minnesota and why he wears his signature fedora. He has toured with the Milk Carton Kids, Lindsey Buckingham and in 2019, he opened for select dates on tour with Neil Young.]

15. Allah-Las – “Roco Ono”
from: Lahs / Mexican Summer / October 11, 2019
[Allah-Las are an American rock band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 2008. The band consists of Miles Michaud (vocals, guitar), Matthew Correia (percussion, vocals), Spencer Dunham (bass, vocals), and Pedrum Siadatian (lead guitar, vocals). The group was founded in 2008, when school friends Matt Correia and Spencer Dunham met Pedrum Siadatian while working together at Amoeba Records in Los Angeles. They began jamming, and together with Correia and Dunham’s fellow school friend, Miles Michaud, formed the band. They released their first 7-inch recording in 2011, “Catamaran/Long Journey”, produced by Nick Waterhouse for his Pres label. In 2012, they released a second single, “Tell Me (What’s on Your Mind)/Sacred Sands”, produced again by Waterhouse but this time for their new label, Innovative Leisure. One reviewer commented that “their sound is steeped in the pop sensibilities of The Zombies, The Kinks and The Yardbirds, laced with Northern Soul, lo-fi funk and the ever-enduring influence of Arthur Lee and Love”. Allah-Las were featured in a Daytrotter session in May 2012 and their performance of Catamaran was named one of the top 200 Daytrotter songs of the year. In September 2012, Allah-Las released their self-titled debut LP, also produced by Waterhouse for Innovative Leisure. The album has been described as “an effortlessly wistful batch of starry-eyed, minor-key beauties that gently ruminate on the usual young-guy subjects: sex, freedom, the ways the former can interfere with the latter and vice versa”. In October 2012, NPR’s World Café featured two songs of Allah-Las, noting that “the music captures the carefree, breezy sounds of California… dreamy romanticism [with] a vibe that can feel both joyous and melancholy”. In October 2019, the album landed at no. 22 on Happy Mag’s list of “The 25 best psychedelic rock albums of the 2010s”, labeled as “a staple in surf-rock and ’60s revival.” Allah-Las completed their first tour in 2011, up the California coast from San Diego to San Francisco. They toured the East Coast and Europe during 2012, where their first show in London, UK was described by The Guardian as “a blissful 45 minutes on a cold night”. In 2014 they released their second album, Worship the Sun. The group released their third album, Calico Review, on September 9, 2016, out on Mexican Summer. The album was recorded in 2016 at the Valentine Recording Studio in Los Angeles.]

Wednesday MidDay Medley Celebrates 15

WMM Celebrates our 15th Anniversary with 15 Special Guests: Iris DeMent, Krystle Warren, Calvin Arsenia, Betse Ellis, Kasey Rausch, Mikal Shapiro, Jake Wells, Marion Merritt, Maria Vasquez Boyd, Necia Gamby, Jen Harris, Nico Gray, Fran Stanton, Barry Lee, and Brenton Cook.

Today’s show is a celebration of 786 weeks, 1572 hours of radio, 15,720 hours of preparation, over 2000 guests, and over 15,000 songs, from thousands of musical artists. We have made it our mission to mix musical genres, playing with themes, diversity, equality, and free speech. We seek to connect listeners with artists and venues and studios and community gathering spaces. Wednesday MidDay Medley has proudly endeavored to help tell the story of our growing Kansas City/Lawrence area music communities, “The Midcoast Sound,” as we like to call it.

To say I’ve been inspired by the KC music scene, is an understatement. The KC music community is fueled by a collaborative and generous heart that is beating in so many of the artists I’ve met while doing this show. I am inspired by the women who created radio on 90.1 FM long before me: my friend April Fletcher who now plays bass professionally in Los Angeles, and my friend Anne Winter, who left us in 2009, and reminded us how we’re all connected. I’m inspired by the diverse , intelligent, motivated, listeners, looking for a place where we can connect to the amazing stories and music of our community.

Today we celebrate the pure idea of community radio, free form radio, radio that tells the story of the people who live here, the artists, the writers, the teachers. Today we celebrate 15 years of Wednesday MidDay Medley, the show that has brought us together, at this time, on this frequency, on these community airwaves. Thanks for listening.

Marion Merritt

10:04 – Introduction of Marion Merritt

Marion Merritt is our most frequent contributor to WMM, She grew up in Los Angeles, and St. Louis. She went to college in Columbia, Missouri. She studied art and musical engineering, and is a avid lover of classic films and punk rock music. She saw Talking Heads on their first U.S. tour when they played One Block West, in 1978. For 15 years she has been sharing her sonic discoveries and information from her musically-encyclopedic brain on Wednesday MidDay Medley. Marion has joined us for every WMM on-air fund drive to help raise funds for the MidCoast Radio Project. Marion is also the proprietor of Records With Merritt, at 1614 Westport Rd. in Kansas City, Missouri, that feature in-store performances from young and upcoming bands.

Marion Merritt thank you for being with us on Wednesday MidDay Medley.

We always wanted someone from a record store to have a regular presence on WMM.

When Mark first met Marion she walked up to him and handed him the Philip Glass recordings of the Low Symphony with David Bowie and Brian Eno, saying, “I think you may be interested in this.”

Mark and Marion really didn’t know each other in the beginning, but throughout these 15 years they’ve become very close friends. Mark has watched Marion’s life transition from corporate retail to owning her own record store in the neighborhood where Mark lives.

For 15 years Marion has had a huge influence on our WMM playlists.

3. Billy Preston – “That’s the Way God Planned It (Live)”
from: The Concert for Bangladesh / Apple Records / December 20, 1971
[The Concert for Bangladesh is a live triple album credited to “George Harrison & Friends” and released on Apple Records in December 1971 in America and January 1972 in Britain. The album followed the two concerts of the same name, held on August 1, 1971 at New York’s Madison Square Garden, featuring Harrison, Bob Dylan, Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan, Ringo Starr, Billy Preston, Leon Russell and Eric Clapton. The shows were a pioneering charity event, in aid of the homeless Bengali refugees of the Bangladesh Liberation War, and set the model for future multi-artist rock benefits such as Live Aid (1985) and the Concert for New York City (2001). The event brought Harrison and Starr together on a concert stage for the first time since 1966, when the Beatles retired from live performance, and represented Dylan’s first major concert appearance in the US in five years. Co-produced by Phil Spector, The Concert for Bangladesh features his Wall of Sound approach in a live setting. Besides the main performers, the musicians and singers include Badfinger, Jim Horn, Klaus Voormann, Alla Rakha, Jim Keltner, Jesse Ed Davis and Claudia Linnear. Minimal post-production was carried out on the recordings, ensuring that the album was a faithful document of the event. The box set’s packaging included a 64-page book containing photos from the concerts; the album cover, designed by Tom Wilkes, consisted of an image of a malnourished child sitting beside an empty food bowl. The album was delayed for three months due to protracted negotiations between Harrison and two record companies keen to protect their business interests, Capitol and Columbia/CBS. On release, The Concert for Bangladesh was a major critical and commercial success. It topped albums charts in several countries and went on to win the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in March 1973. Together with the 1972 Apple concert film directed by Saul Swimmer, the album gained Indian classical music its largest Western audience up until that time. It was reissued in 2005, four years after Harrison’s death, with revised artwork. As of 2011, sales of the album continue to benefit the George Harrison Fund for UNICEF, which raised $1.2 million for children in the Horn of Africa, in a campaign marking the album’s 40th anniversary.] [William Everett Preston (September 2, 1946 – June 6, 2006) was an American musician whose work encompassed R&B, rock, soul, funk, and gospel. Preston was a top session keyboardist in the 1960s, during which he backed artists such as Little Richard, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Rev. James Cleveland and the Beatles. He went on to achieve fame as a solo artist, with hit singles such as “That’s the Way God Planned It”, “Outa-Space”, “Will It Go Round in Circles”, “Space Race”, “Nothing from Nothing” and “With You I’m Born Again”. Additionally, Preston co-wrote “You Are So Beautiful”, which became a number 5 hit for Joe Cocker. Preston was one of five musicians credited on a Beatles recording other than the group’s four members. Preston continued to record and perform with other artists, notably George Harrison after the Beatles’ breakup, and Eric Clapton, and he played keyboards for the Rolling Stones on many of the group’s albums and tours during the 1970s.]

Kasey Rausch thanks for being with us on Wednesday MidDay Medley

Kasey was one of the very first live musical guests on WMM. If you look at our very first playlist from May 14, 2004 you’ll see a diverse mix, and equality between women and men, however there was hardly any “local” music. Mark was learning how to do this radio show, and it was the Kansas City and Lawrence area musicians who came on the show and taught him about the music community. Robert Moore’s Oxblood Records compilation “First Blood” became an early road map to the bands Ghosty, The Architects, Olympic Size, Softee, Roman Numerals, Ssion, The Republic Tiger, Be/Non, American Catastrophe, and others. Midwest Music Foundation and Abigail Henderson helped to shine the light. After the death of Anne Winter, Kasey and mark and Betse Ellis made a pact to be there for each other as friends and to attempt to continue some of of Anne’s work. Mark redirected his focus on the radio show to include even more area releases, and to document the growth of the music in Kansas City. Social media and Facebook became the inter-office memo of the are music community. The birth of festivals: Crossroads Music Fest, Middle of the Map Fest, and Folk Alliance International Conference, the development of more studios and record labels, and the re-birth of record stores.

Iris DeMent

10:57 – Intro for Iris DeMent

In his review for WHYY’s Fresh Air, Entertainment Weekly Music Editor – Ken Tucker wrote: “Iris DeMent possesses one of the great voices in contemporary popular music: powerfully, ringingly clear, capable of both heartbreaking fragility and blow-your-ears-back power. Had she been making country albums in the ’70s and ’80s and had more commercial ambition, she’d probably now be considered right up there with Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette. Instead, she’s lived a contemporary life, a somewhat private life. As she recently told an interviewer, “There’s a lot that goes into life besides songwriting.”

Iris DeMent released her debut album “Infamous Angel” in 1992, on Warner Brothers records, a collection of instant classic songs including “Let The Mystery Be.” These were songs she first wrote and performed in coffeehouses and small clubs here in Kansas City, along with other “up and coming” singer songwriters: Howard Iceberg and Scott Hrabko. Since then Iris has released six full length recordings, was nominated for a Grammy twice, has had her songs used in multiple films and television shows, appeared as an actress in the film, Song Catcher, appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman, Latenight with Conan OBrien, toured all over the world, was a frequent contributor to Prairie Home Companion, collaborated on recordings with John Prine, Emmylou Harris, Nancy Griffith, Steve Earle, and so many others.

On November 21, 2002 Iris married acclaimed singer-songwriter Greg Brown, in a private ceremony in the office of Rev. Sam Mann of St. Mark Church in Kansas City.

After trying to live in both Iowa and Kansas City, Iris ended up moving to Iowa but she still holds on to her love of the 816.

13. Iris DeMent – “Let The Mystery Be”
from: Infamous Angel / Warner Brothers / 1992 / 1993
[Iris DeMent’s first three releases, all on Warner Brothers records, were critically acclaimed, and she received two Grammy nominations during this time, in the “Folk Music” category. Meanwhile country radio completely overlooked her original songs, and amazing voice that has been compared to Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette. For her 1992 debut record, John Prine wrote the liner notes. “One night after receiving a copy of “Let the Mystery Be,” I was listening to the tape while frying a dozen or so pork chops in a skillet. Well Iris DeMent starts singing about “Mama’s Opry,” and being the sentimental fellow I am, I got a lump in my throat and a tear fell from my eyes into the hot oil. Well the oil popped out and burnt my arm as if the pork chops were trying to say, “Shut up, or I’ll really give you something to cry about.” Of course, pork chops can’t talk. But Iris DeMent’s songs can. They talk about isolated memories of life, love and living. And Iris has a voice I like a whole lot, like one you’ve heard before— but not really. So listen to this music, this Iris DeMent. It’s good for you. And if pork chops could talk, they’d probably learn how to sing one of her songs. Then we’d all have something to cry about.” – John Prine, Songwriter, musician & president Oh Boy! Records.]

Krystle Warren

11:08 – Introduction of Krystle Warren

Krystle Warren began her musical career in KC in 2001 collaborating with area jazz and pop musicians. After living in San Francisco and NYC, Krystle was signed to a French label – Because Music, and moved to Paris to release “Circles” in 2009. Krystle played “Later with Jools Holland,” garnering critical acclaim and traveling all over the world with Rufus Wainwright, Nick Cave, Norah Jones, and Joan As Police Woman. Krystle created, Parlour Door Music to release her double album: “Love Songs,” from a 13-day session in Brooklyn, where she recorded 24 songs live with 28 musicians including her band, The Faculty. Most recently Krystle released, Three The Hard Way that she co-produced with Ben Kane (D’Angelo). Three The Hard Way was #1 on WMM’s 117 Best Recordings of 2017.

Krystle Warren thanks for being with us on Wednesday MidDay Medley

We last talked with Krystle on Wednesday MidDay Medley on January 30, 2019 with Brad Cox and Jen Owen just prior to the Owen Cox Dance Group’s show “What Keeps Mankind Alive.”
In late 2018 you were in KC to participate in Calvin Arsenia’s Cantaloupe Premiere at The Gem Theatre, and that same weekend you sand at Mutual Musicians Foundation and did surprise show at The Ship.

Krystle has travelled all over the world and has musical ties in Paris, London, San Francisco, and New York City, but K\C will always hold a special place in her heart.

Krystle was brought to Paris by a record label that sent her a one way ticket. Because Music put our her record “Circles.” Krystle performed on multiple European television shows and then ended up leaving the label.

Krystle’s independently produced, “Love Songs” features 24 songs, on two albums, recorded in New York City, with a 27-piece orchestra. You followed up this double album extravaganza with Three The Hard Way, where you played almost every single instrument and sang lead and harmonized with your own voice in a critically acclaimed work of musical art.

In between all of these projects Krystle has recored with Hercules and The Love Affair, Joon Moon, and tribute concerts and recordings for Kate McGarrigle and Nick Drake.

Krystle has toured extensively with Rufus Wainwright, Joan as Police Woman, Nick Cave, and Norah Jones.

14. Krystle Warren – “Get A Load”
from: Three The Hard Way / Parlour Door Music / August 18, 2017
[Produced by Krystle Warren and Ben Kane (D’Angelo, Emily King, PJ Morton). Recorded, engineered, and mixed by Ben Kane. Written & performed by Krystle Warren. Mixed at The Garden, Brooklyn. Mastered & cut by Alex DeTurk at Masterdisk. Last year in Krystle Warren premiered this song and her other new songs from this album at the Middle of the Map Fest in a packed room at Californos in Westport and later at The Polsky Theatre for the Performing Arts Series of Johnsons County Community College. For this record Krystle decided to play every instrument and vocals & back up vocals, “playing bass, drums, lap steel, piano, guitar, and vocals directly to analog tape. She and Ben Kane recorded in Villetaneuse, France, a small town on the outskirts of Paris in a vintage 70s era studio that offered just the right, rich sound to suggest the musical foundation for the record, and to do justice to the duo’s carefully balanced arrangements.” On the radio show last year Krystle shared inspirations for this record, early gospel recordings, that crossed over into Jazz from Pharoah Sanders, Edwin Hawkins, and The Swan Silvertones. Originally from KC, Krystle learned to play the guitar by listening to Rubber Soul & Revolver from The Beatles. Laurel Morgan Parks & Sascha Groschang of The Wires
+ Molly McLaughlin & Turlach Boylan

1. “It’s Showtime Folks”
from: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to All That Jazz / Casablanca / December 20, 1979
[WMM’s theme song]

2. Marvin Gaye – “Where Are We Going? (Alternate Mix 2)”
from: You’re the Man / Motown – Universal Music / March 29, 2019
[You’re the Man is a posthumous studio album by American singer Marvin Gaye, originally intended to be released in 1972 as the follow-up to What’s Going On. It was released on March 29, 2019 to celebrate what would have been Gaye’s 80th birthday on April 2, 2019. The album includes the single of the same name, as well as the intended original album in full and other songs Gaye recorded at the time. Salaam Remi’s remix of “My Last Chance” was released in promotion of the album on February 8, 2019.You’re the Man was intended as another socially conscious record like What’s Going On (1971), but following the release of its lead single, the title track “You’re the Man”, Gaye cancelled its release. This was in part due to the reception of the song, as well as the fact that Gaye’s political views were different from those of Motown founder Berry Gordy. For these reasons, You’re the Man was long considered a “lost” album. 15 of the 17 songs have not previously been released on vinyl, but most were made available on CD compilations over the years. The album includes a longer take of “I Want to Come Home for Christmas”, which was first made available in 1990 after being recorded in 1972. The physical release of the album includes liner notes written by David Ritz. “Where Are We Going?” was written by Larry Mizell and Larry Gordon.]

3. Mattiel – “Keep The Change”
from: Satis Factory / ATO Records / June 14, 2019
[Bringing a whole new meaning to the term one-(wo)man band, Atlanta-based Mattiel Brown writes her own music, directs her own visuals and even designs her own sets. Oh, and when she’s not busy with her music career you can find her at her side-hustling as a set designer, illustrator and designer. Having grown up in quiet rurality in Georgia working on her mother’s farm, these creative sensibilities offered a young Mattiel endless escapist opportunities. Dreaming of far away lands and wild worlds, it was upon stumbling across her mum’s record collection (the likes of Donovan, Peter Paul and Mary, and The Monkees) that things really began to click and she discovered the transportive power of music.]

4. The Sextet – “Colors of the Wind (feat. Calvin Arsenia)”
from: Blob Castle / The Sextet / October 7, 2017
[After the release of The Sextet’s debut album, In a Natural State from July 2016, bassist and bandleader Robert Castillo moved from the Pacific Northwest back home to Kansas City. Castillo reconnected with high school friends and other musicians to reform the group and continue performing his compositions and arrangements. Blob Castle showcases not only the talent of musicians bred in a jazz city, but also the diversity and growth of Castillo’s writing. From the Latin groove tune “La Mona,” written for Robert’s mother to the somber ballad “Maggie” written in memory of a friend, this album goes beyond genre barriers to explore the paths of improvisational music. The former album was funded through a Kickstarter campaign in which a reward for donating was a Castillo original composition. On this album you’ll hear these commissioned pieces which include “TC,” “be,” and “#notmypresident.” The album flows from one mood/emotion to the next, taking the audience through a journey through Robert’s imagination. Facilitating the flow are band members Teddy Krulewich on trumpet, Max Levy on tenor sax, Trevor Turla on trombone, Peter Marten on guitar, and Fritz Hutchison on drums. Mixed and mastered by Duane Trower at Weights & Measures in KCMO. The current line up includes: Joe Tesoro on soprano sax, Max Levy on tenor sax, Aryana Nemati on baritone sax, Pete Marten on guitar, Nik Douglas on drums, and Robert Castillo on bass, and composer. The Sextet is getting set to release their third album “Among Friends” in the Fall of 2019]

[The Sextet play Jazz Night at The Ship, 1217 Union Ave, West Bottoms, on Sat, May 11, at 10:00 PM]

7. Stereolab – “International Colouring Contest”
from: Mars Audiac Quintet / Elektra / August 8, 1994
[Expanded Edition Reissued May 3, 2019]
[One of several new reissues remastered from original tapes, with a bonus disk of unreleased demos, outtakes and alternate mixes. Co-released by band’s own label Duophonic UHF Disks and Warp Records. In February 2019, the group announced a tour of Europe and North America to coincide with expanded, remastered reissues of several of the albums. Stereolab were an English-French avant-pop band formed in London in 1990. Led by the songwriting team of Tim Gane and Lætitia Sadier, the group’s music combined influences from krautrock, lounge and 1960s pop music, often incorporating a repetitive motorik beat with heavy use of vintage electronic keyboards and female vocals sung in English and French. On stage, they played in a more feedback-driven and guitar-oriented style. The band also drew from funk, jazz and Brazilian music, and were one of the first artists to be dubbed “post-rock”. They are regarded among the most innovative and influential groups of the 1990s. Mars Audiac Quintet is the third studio album by English-French rock band Stereolab. It was released on August 8, 1994 in the United Kingdom by Duophonic Records and in the United States by Elektra Records. During the recording of the album, guitarist Sean O’Hagan left as a full-time member to tour with the High Llamas, while keyboardist Katharine Gifford was added. The song “International Colouring Contest” is a tribute to Lucia Pamela, and samples her voice in the intro. Stereolab: Lætitia Sadier on vocals & guitar, Mint’s organs, & tambourine; Tim Gane on guitar, bass, Vox, Farfisa organs, & Moog synthesiser; Duncan Brown on bass; Katharine Gifford on Vox, Farfisa organs, & Moog synthesiser; Mary Hansen on vocals, guitar, tambourine, & egg shaker; Sean O’Hagan on slide guitar, marimba, & brass arrangements; and Andy Ramsay on drums, percussion.] [The last Stereolab release we remember was 2010’s Not Music on Drag City Records. It was their 12th album, released during the band’s self – imposed hiatus from recording and touring. The tracks were recorded in early 2007. Half of the recordings were released in 2008 on their release “Chemical Chords.” It was reported that the recordings began when band member Tim Gane started messing with ‘a series of about seventy tiny drum loops’ on top of improvised chord sequences using piano and vibraphone. “building them up from there – later slowing the tracks down or speeding them up – it was a totally new way of doing songs for us”. The band createdm all the tracks in their studio, Instant Zero, in Bordeaux, France.]

The Wave (A Reckoning) written by Nick Carswell

Where to start? Where do I begin?
I’ve played my part for all the good it’s been
And the stars grow dim
High above me

We all laughed, what a joke it’s been
I’ve sold my lot, all but given in
But still the din
Is rising
above me
All at once
It overcomes me

But here I am at the end
On the outside looking in
I see a friend
I watch the pendulum swing

My body’s bruised
The air is thin
On my back
I’ve been carrying
the greed and sin
of those before me
But now a reckoning
A wave is forming

So here I am at the end
On the outside looking in
I feel the weight
I watch the world caving in

Here am I, All I’ve lost is what I’ve given in
I feel the end
I’m ready to begin

PRESS RELEASE: Lawrence-based Musician Launches New Multimedia Performance Inspired by his Immigrant Experience. “Changing Shades” is a new electro-acoustic project from Irish immigrant and musician Nick Carswell

LAWRENCE, KS MARCH 20, 2019:
Lawrence-based musician Nick Carswell will debut a new multimedia work inspired by his experience as an immigrant in the United States, with concerts at the Kansas City Irish Center (May 10th) and the Lawrence Arts Center (May 11th). The new project is a departure from the usual genres Carswell has previously released work in and combines his recent experience with multimedia public art and a new body of electro-acoustic music. The Lawrence and Kansas City concerts will be accompanied by guests Maria Cuevas (formerly Maria The Mexican) and Bolivian multi-instrumentalist, Amado Espinoza, respectively. Tickets for both concerts are $10 and performances begin at 7pm.

Changing Shades: An Immigrant’s Story of Confusion & Belonging will consist of 10 songs, each accompanied by lighting, projection and stage design, creating a unique visual canvas to accompany the music. The projected was supported by an ArtsKC Inspiration Grant which funded the purchase of electronic music and lighting equipment to expand the music performance into an immersive multimedia presentation.

“This is definitely new ground for me,” Carswell explains. “The project combines some new tools I’ve been quietly working with over the last several years, with themes that have been kind of weighing heavy recently. This combination called for a different kind of presentation.”

The new works focus on the theme of “belonging” and draw upon Carswell’s experience living as an Irish immigrant for 8 years in the U.S. Songs deal with his own sense of shifting cultural life.

10. MorMor – “Some Place Else”
from: Some Place Else – EP / Don’t Guess – AWAL Records / May 3, 2019
[Artist, Singer-Producer, multi-instrumentalist, born and raised in Toronto. MorMor writes, records, produces most of his own work. He tells pigeons and planes, “A lot of my inspiration stems from wanting to share a perspective of Toronto that I feel hasn’t been represented,” he says. “I’m glad Toronto is getting a lot of attention right now, but my experience of the city that has shaped me isn’t really part of the story yet.” he goes on to say, “I always felt different from the other kids at school. I went through a really hard time because I was the kid who always hung out with a wide variety of people. I kept searching for kids like me, but it never happened. In the end it gave me some good perspective. I was a pretty rebellious person when I was young. I had a problem with authority. I was reluctant to take orders if I didn’t believe in the cause. I might be the only kid who got suspended in the first grade. Music was something that I could escape through.]

1. “It’s Showtime Folks”
from: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to All That Jazz / Casablanca / December 20, 1979
[WMM’s theme song]

2. Mavis Staples – “Can You Get to That (Live)”
from: Live in London / Anti / February 8, 2019
[New Live album released just prior to her 80th birthday, and 10 years after her last live album, Mavis Staples Live: Hope at the Hideout, from 2008. A follow up to her 16th studio solo album, “If All I Was Was Black, from 2017. For Live in London, Mavis recorded with her touring band: Rick Holmstrom on guitar, music direction & backing vocals; Jeff Turmes on bass & backing vocals; Stephen Hodges on drums; Vicki Randle on backing vocals; and Donny Gerrard on backing vocals. This live album celebrates music from her last 5 studio albums, released in the last nine years, with songs written by Jeff Tweedy, M. Ward, Benjamin Booker, Ben Harper, Curtis Mayfield, Talking Heads, Roebuck “Pops” Staples, Justin Vernon. This track was written by George Clinton & Ernie Harris and recorded for “Maggot Brain,” the third studio album by the Funkadelic, released in 1971. Mavis Staples is a legend. She is a gospel R&B singer, actress and civil rights activist, born in Chicago, Illinois on July 10, 1939. She has recorded and performed with her family’s band The Staple Singers. She began her career with her family group in 1950. Initially singing locally at churches, appearing on a weekly radio show, the Staples scored a hit in 1956 with “Uncloudy Day” for the Vee-Jay label. When Mavis graduated from what is now Paul Robeson High School in 1957, The Staple Singers took their music on the road. Led by family patriarch Roebuck “Pops” Staples on guitar and including the voices of Mavis and her siblings Cleotha, Yvonne, and Purvis, the Staples were called “God’s Greatest Hitmakers.” With Mavis’ voice and Pops’ songs, singing, and guitar playing, the Staples evolved from enormously popular gospel singers (with recordings on United and Riverside as well as Vee-Jay) to become the most spectacular and influential spirituality-based group in America. By the mid-1960s The Staple Singers, inspired by Pops’ close friendship with Martin Luther King, Jr., became the spiritual and musical voices of the civil rights movement. They covered contemporary pop hits with positive messages, including Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall” and a version of Stephen Stills’ “For What It’s Worth”. Mavis!, the first feature documentary about Staples and the Staple Singers, directed by Jessica Edwards, had its world premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival in March 2015. Mavis! was screened in theaters and on HBO in February 2016. Staples was briefly married to Spencer Leak in 1964; they divorced when Staples would not end her music career to stay home. She has no children. In the 2015 documentary Mavis! she reveals that Bob Dylan once proposed to her, and she turned him down. This song was oroginally included on Mavis Staples’ 2013 release One True Vine, her 13th studio album, and the second on which she collaborated with record producer and Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy. Tweedy also played most of the instruments on the album, with the exception of the drums, which were played by his son, Spencer Tweedy. The album was recorded at the Wilco Loft in Chicago, and while working on it, Staples commuted back and forth between the Loft (on Chicago’s North Side) and her home on Chicago’s South Side.]

3. Shy Boys – “Dim The Light”
from: Dim The Light / Brick By Brick – Single / Polyvinyl Record Co. / February 15, 2019

Shy Boys line-up consists of brothers Collin Rausch and Kyle Rausch, Konnor Ervin, Kyle Little and Ross Brown. The group formed shortly after the trio became roommates in 2012. Kyle Rausch and Konnor Ervin were already band mates in the indie-pop band The ACBs and Collin had been playing for years in the Kansas City area in various bands. The three shared a love for 1960s era pop rock and soon started writing their own music. In 2014 they released the self-titled Shy Boys on High Dive Records. The album received generally positive reviews and the single “Bully Fight” was featured on Spin.com. In June 2014 the band recorded and released two more singles and one of them, “Life Is Peachy,” was featured on Stereogum. On April 4th, 2018, it was announced that the band had signed to Polyvinyl Record Co.]

4. Kasey Rausch – “City Strangers”
from: Born Near The Waters / Independent / November 24, 2004
[From http://www.kaseyrausch.com: Released on the night of her 30th birthday, “Born Near the Waters…” is the first full album released by Kasey Rausch. It was recorded by Mike West at the 9th Ward Pickin’ Parlor in New Orleans, Louisiana over three hot muggy days – July 3, 4 & 5 2004. Breaks from the studio were spent on top of the now infamous levy broken by the forces of Hurricane Katrina. Kasey’s husband, Travis Huffhines (mandolin) and two of her dear friends, Mikal Shapiro (harmonies, percussion, clarinet) and Joel Kraft (vocals), recorded by day and gigged by night. The result is a raw, un-mastered recording that reflects the once youthful songwriting and vocal styles of Rausch. Guest musicians include Grammy nominee Gina Forsyth on fiddle, Mike West on banjo, mandolin, acoustic guitar and Katie West on upright bass (Truckstop Honeymoon). // Kasey Rausch is a 5th generation songwriter & musician, co-producer/host of roots music radio show River Trade Radio on KKFI 90.1FM Kansas City Community Radio and former host of Campfire on DittyTV (Memphis, TN). Her family and musical roots can be found in Parkville, Kansas City, the Missouri Ozarks, Winfield, Kansas (home of the legendary Walnut Valley Festival) and deep Southeast Texas. She tours nationally with pedal steel and guitar master Marco Pascolini as The Country Duo and plays locally with classic country honky tonkers The Naughty Pines and songwriter Scott Stanton. Rausch’s third album, Guitar in Hand (originally released on MudStomp Records 2014), debuted at #3 on the Roots Music Reporting charts and was voted one of the top three albums of the year by readers of The Pitch, KC’s weekly entertainment guide. She was named 2016 Best of the Northland Artist, 2013’s Female Performer of the Year by The Farmer’s Turnpike on KMXN 92.9 FM and is a four-time Pitch Music Award Nominee.]

[Kasey Rausch plays a Songwriters Serenade with Rex Pryor and John Keck, Thursday, February 21, at 7:00 PM at Madrigall, 1627 Oak St, KCMO. Hosted by John L. Keck, “Songwriters Serenade” is an evening of performance in a listening environment with original music in the round.]

5. Laura Spiegel – “Strand of Life (“Viroid”)”
from: Unseen Worlds / Unseen Worlds / January 18, 2019 Reissue
[Laurie Spiegel’s second full-length album, Unseen Worlds, arrived just over ten years after her debut album. Having realized the pieces found on The Expanding Universe (1980) on an instrument no longer available to her, the GROOVE System at Bell Laboratories, Spiegel moved on to composing and developing for the Alles Machine, alphaSyntauri, McLeyvier and various other instruments before creating an instrument entirely her own. Spiegel created “Music Mouse – An Intelligent Instrument” on a Macintosh 512k so that she could have an instrument that was not general purpose but a small, specialized, and well defined musical instrument for and by her that she did not have to compromise on or risk losing access to it. While it was a very personal instrument for Spiegel, demand among friends and colleagues nevertheless grew until “Music Mouse – An Intelligent Instrument” became a commercial product for the Macintosh, Amiga, and Atari personal computers with a devoted popular following that continues to this day, despite the obsoletion of those platforms. At the time of her Unseen Worlds album’s original release in 1991, the issuing record label turned out to be going out of business, dissolved and disappeared, sending the album immediately into obscurity. Outside of a private CD edition issued by Spiegel on her own Aesthetic Engineering label in 1994, this new edition represents the first proper commercial release of Unseen Worlds. “Unseen Worlds is not so much based on melody and rhythm as it is on textures, pulses, and sonic environments. Sometimes dark, sometimes light, its drama pulls in the adventurous listener who wants to take a musical journey. Using computer software she wrote in order to implement a unique musical vision, Unseen Worlds blends the artistic and the technical, the cerebral and the sensual, and revives the virtually abandoned tradition of electronic music. Unseen Worlds is the work of a sonic explorer whose music can both challenge and caress. Those looking for other worlds of sound can put on headphones and find them here.” – Craig Anderton // All compositions composed, produced, mixed, and coded by Laurie Spiegel. Mastered by Paul Zinman]

7. Mae C – “Anxious”
from: “Anxious” – Single / Mae C / April 10, 2017
[Follow up to her 2016 EP Warning Sign of True Love. Influenced by Hip Hop, Rock, Jazz, Soul & R&B, Mae C is making her mark as an independent artist in the Kansas City music scene. A self-acclaimed black girl nerd, she originally planned on becoming an engineer and studied computer design at Lincoln University of Missouri. After leaving Lincoln to pursue her true passion of singing and songwriting, she finds that her techy side impacts how she writes music. “As a kid, I was always picking things apart and figuring out how to put them back together,” she said. “As an artist, I do the same thing – I pick apart my favorite singers to discover what made them great so I can walk in their footsteps.” With Kansas City becoming a place of movement for arts and entertainment, Mae C says now is the time to reinvent the wheel, break barriers, build bridges, but most of all support each other. “Supporting each other is the secret to rising to the top and putting the town on the map”, says Mae C. She aspires to inspire other artists to capitalize in their craft by not putting themselves in a box. “I’m an African American woman, but I refuse to allow anyone to use that against me. I’m an artist & proud black girl and I deserve a chance at every opportunity just as anyone else,” she said..]

[Mae C. plays The Riot Room, 4048 Broadway, KCMO, Saturday, February 23, at 8:00 PM. with Trxz Jones, They Call Me Sauce, JaySol Music, Guest DJ: DJ G3wizz, and Special Guest: Jo Blaq.]

8. Mercury Rev – “Reunion feat. Rachel Goswell”
from Bobbie Gentry’s the Delta Sweete Revisited / Partisan Records / February 8, 2019
[Rachel Ann Goswell was born May 16, 1971. She is an English singer-songwriter and musician who rose to prominence as vocalist and guitarist of the shoegaze band Slowdive, which formed in 1989. Goswell, along with Neil Halstead, Ian McCutcheon and former Chapterhouse member Simon Rowe became Mojave 3 when Slowdive transitioned to a more country/folk rock style. She released a solo album in 2004, titled Waves Are Universal on 4AD Records. // It slipped out of a Mississippi of hot biscuits, genteel table manners and working-class sense, suddenly overturned by a grave sinning and suicide. Carried on an evening breeze of strings and a supple, foreboding voice like sensually charged breath, “Ode to Bilie Joe”—Bobbie Gentry’s 1967 debut as a singer-songwriter and a Number One single for three weeks in the late Summer of Love—was the most psychedelic record of that year not from San Francisco or London, as if Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Brian Wilson had conspired to make a country-rock Pet Sounds. Except Gentry, just 23 when she wrote the song, got there first, in miniature. // Gentry’s hit was a revolutionary act, a quietly thorough feminism in vision, deed and success amid the strict, paternal order of the country-music industry. And it was her license to thrill again. In October, 1967, while “Billie Joe” was still in the Top Five, Gentry began recording The Delta Sweete, a connected set of a dozen songs that extended the narrative dynamics of that single with personal reflection and set her folk-siren charisma in a richer frame of dream-state orchestration, swamp-rock guitars and big-city-R&B horns. // In her eight original songs for the album, Gentry drew from her childhood and church life on her grandparents’ farm in Chickasaw County, Mississippi: the girl-ish craving for a beautiful dress in “Reunion”; the rise-and-shine of “Mornin’ Glory”; the stern Sunday lessons in “Sermon,” based on a traditional hymn also known as “Run On.” The covers were boldly chosen: Mose Allison’s chain-gang blues “Parchman Farm”; “Tobacco Road”’s litany of trial; the Cajun pride in Doug Kershaw’s “Louisiana Man”. Gentry also turned them to new purpose and even gender. “Gonna get myself a man, one gonna treat me right,” she sang in Jimmy Reed’s “Big Boss Man” with heated assurance. // But The Delta Sweete—released in March, 1968, only three months after Dylan’s John Wesley Harding and right as the Byrds came to Nashville to cut Sweetheart of the Rodeo—was too soon in its precedence. Gentry’s LP, the first country-rock opera, was ignored on arrival, not even cracking Billboard’s Top 100. It was as if Billie Joe had risen out of the Tallahatchie River and thrown that record off the bridge instead. // This Delta Sweete is her long-delayed justice—Mercury Rev’s committed and an affectionate resurrection of an album that anticipated by three decades their own pivotal expedition through transcendental America, 1998’s Deserter’s Songs. From their recording lair in New York’s Catskill Mountains, the founding core of Jonathan Donahue and Grasshopper with Jesse Chandler (previously in the Texas group Midlake) honor Gentry’s foresight and creative triumph with spacious invention and hallucinatory air. And they are not alone. Gentry’s stories and original resolve are brought to new vocal life and empowerment by a vocal cast of women from across modern rock and its alternative paths: among them, Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval; Laetitia Sadier, formerly of Stereolab; Marissa Nadler; Margo Price, the fiery new country star with a punk-rock heart; and Norway’s Susanne Sundfør, who cuts through “Tobacco Road” with arctic-Nico poise. Phoebe Bridgers, whose first record was a softly stunning 2015 single for Ryan Adams’ PAX AM label, hovers through the acid- western suspense of Gentry’s “Jessye’ Lisabeth” with floating calm, like a comforting angel. // On the 1968 LP, Gentry opened with a call to jubilant order, “Okolona River Bottom Band,” like she was leading a barn-dance union of the early Rolling Stones and Louis Armstrong’s Hot Five. Norah Jones takes that entrance here with her own sultry command, like Sarah Vaughan at the head of a slow-blooming choir. In “Sermon,” Price—who has known real struggle up close—sings like a survivor through Mercury Rev’s explosion of color and groove: a specialty throughout the band’s history as recently as 2015’s The Light in You, going back through All Is Dream in 2001, the whirling iridescent soul of 1995’s See You on the Other Side and the sumptuous turbulence of the 1992 single “Car Wash Hair.” // Gentry is still very present in the changes. Her seesaw of pride and hurt in the melancholy blur of “Penduli Pendulum” (“When goodbye serves as/My one amusement”) is even more explicit with the seasoned intimacy of Vashti Bunyan—a once-elusive voice from Britain’s psychedelic-folk boom—set against the younger, brighter arc of Kaela Sinclair, now in the electronic project M83. And in “Courtyard,” a despairing finale of strings and guitar arpeggios on Gentry’s LP, Mercury Rev build a striking Delta Krautrock in which the English singer Beth Orton wanders, like Gentry, through a ruin of profound loss and treasured memory. // “Ode to Billie Joe” was not on the ‘68 Delta Sweete. But Mercury Rev go back to that dinner table with Lucinda Williams of Lake Charles, Louisiana, and it is an inspired bond, calling up the ghosts and questions of a South still very much with us. Indeed, Gentry—who retired from recording and performing in the Seventies—reportedly lives only a couple hours’ drive from the bridge that made her famous, while the spirits she set loose in The Delta Sweete are as restless and compelling as they were 50 years ago. This album is a loving tribute to that achievement, one of the greatest albums you have never heard. It is also a dozen new ways to walk that land. -David Fricke]

15. Lenny Lashley’s Gang Of One – “All Are Welcome”
from: All Are Welcome / Pirates Press Records / February 15, 2019
[Lenny Lashley is a household name in New England. Whether it’s performing on stage or slinging drinks at The Midway Cafe in Jamaica Plains, Massachusettes, Lenny is a star – regaling the world with Boston history and decades of tour stories like no one else can. His voice is as Boston as it gets – and as identifiable as any other frontman out there. Lenny’s even narrated movies and done voiceover gigs to help him sustain being a diehard rock and roller. A longtime fixture in the Boston punk scene, Lenny has been playing and touring for 20 years. After a traumatic run of Europe in ’08 (resulting in a mental breakdown) and a few years of reflection, Lenny has re-emerged onto the scene with more energy and clarity than ever before, playing solo acoustic shows, making cameos with Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and even joining the Boston powerhouse Street Dogs. Lenny Lashley’s Gang Of One and the new album, All Are Welcome is aimed to take Lenny’s prowess and message to a larger audience. The underlying message that this release conveys could not be better timed, as the world is desperately in need of a voice of reason.]

11:33 – Interview with Frank Alvarez

Frank Alvarez on the February 20, 2019 edition of Wednesday MidDay Medley.

I first met Frank Alvarez in the mid 1990s. Frank was working as a manager and music buyer for Recycled Sounds at Westport Road & Main Street. Before that Frank ran his own record store, Abba Zappa. When Recycled Sounds closed in 2006, Frank was part of a special radio show we produced on Wednesday MidDay Medley, featuring testimonials from past and present Recycled Sounds employees, and playlist created by Recycled Sounds Staff reflecting stories of the time Prince came into the store, or the multiple bus trips the store organized to see The Pixies, or the many cultural events that were connected to this special place. The Radio show also included live interviews with Frank, Kasey Rausch, Kurt von Schlemmer, Iris DeMent and Anne Winter herself, who helped to produced and coordinate the show.

It seemed like the end of an era for music. The end of vinyl. The end of brick and morter music stores. Frank went on to work for Vinyl Renaissance, one of the only record stores left in the metro, besides Zebedee’s on 39th, It’s A Beautiful Day, and Vinyl Underground at Seventh Heaven. Seven years passed, and then something happened, vinyl made a comeback. Mills Records Company opened in 2013, Records With Merritt opened in 2014, Zebedee’s closed and reopened as Revolution Records in the Crossroads, Josey Records opened at 19th & Oak St.; FM Music opened on East 18th St; Brothers Records & Music opened on Johnson Drive in Mission; and Gotwhatulike at 11601 Hickman Mills Drive opened in July 2014. Record Stores were opening and thriving again, creating that needed community space for music lovers, bands, and vinyl collectors.

Last Fall, Frank Alvarez and longtime friend James Oshel opened Sister Anne’s – Records and Coffee, at 901 East 31st Street, in Kansas City. Sister Anne’s sells used records, new local releases, posters, stereos, and coffee, and was named after Anne Winter who owned Recycled Sounds, one of Kansas City’s most treasured record stores, where both Frank and James worked. Since then their business is growing. They have welcomed many in-store concerts, and this weekend are presenting, Lenny Lashley’s Gang Of One, on Friday, Feb. 22, at 6:30 PM, with The Uncouth and Red Kate, hosted by Teenage Heart Records.

Frank Alvarez thanks for being with us again on WMM

Frank Alvarez & James Oshel of Sister Anne’s – Records and Coffee, 901 East 31st Street, in KCMO. (Photo by Aaron Rhodes)

Sister Anne’s – Records and Coffee is two blocks west of Troost, at 901 East 31st Street.

James Oshel and Frank Alvarez had talked about starting a record store when they were roommates and working together at Recycled Sounds. When Recycled Sounds closed, in 2006, Frank Alvarez went to work at Vinyl Renaissance, and Jim Oshel at Broadway Cafe.

10 years passed by, and then the owner of Windhorse Tattoo, Mark Galloway, who had worked with Jim Oshel at Mercy Seat Tattoo, let his friend know he was moving and there would be extra space in the building. This was the spark that ignited Oshel and Alvarez moving into action to open their own place.

Frank Alvarez and Jim Oshel decided to open a record store and a coffee house and were motivated to name after Anne Winter, owner of Recycled Sounds, who died in 2009.

Recycled Sounds operated from 1988 to 2006. Anne Winter and husband Kurt Von Schlemmer, were integral to the Kansas City Music scene. Anne Winter was a co-founder of the Kansas City Free Speech Coalition, and the brain child behind the annual Culture Under Fire, a week and sometimes two week festival of music, art, performance, guest speakers and writing and publishing events centered around the 1st Amendment and freedom of speech. Recycled Sounds was home to many bands and a meeting place.

Frank told Aaron Rhodes in a Pitch Kansas City article published on December 26, 2018, “I want to do what Anne taught us to do,” Alvarez says. “She taught us to just be good people, help people find the music they’re looking for, provide a space in Kansas City where they can find out about music, come in and talk about music, and just do what we can for the whole scene.”

Frank ran his own record store, Abba Zappa, three blocks away from Recycled Sounds. As is usually the case record stores are generally friendly with each other, as studies prove that the more record stores in a community the more business for all. Frank and Anne were friends. Frank had been second guessing his decision to run his own store when at one point Anne Winter visited Anna Zappa and offered to buy him out, bringing his inventory , and he himself into Recycled Sounds. Alvarez accepted the offer.

11:44 – More Interview with Frank Alvarez

Frank told Aaron Rhodes of The Pitch Kansas City, (When Anne hired me), “At that point, I was about 10 years in the game already, and I thought, ‘I know everything,’” Alvarez says. “I went to work for her and learned so much more.”

Anne Winter was one of the people who helped start 90.1 FM KKFI. She served on the Board of Directors and hosted Kansas City first ever Punk Rock show on the radio called Little “Orphan Annie.” Alvarez told Aaron Rhodes about the wide variety of music that could be found at Recycled Sounds. “There was someone there that specialized in every kind of music,” he says. “There was the hip-hop person, the punk rock person, there was a person that knew classic rock. Every base was covered.”

Frank Alvarez and Jim Oshel have been working diligently, building up the physical space and inventory, installing turn tables with coffee and espresso machines for their new business of Sister Anne’s – Records and Coffee. They are open from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM.The shop is hosting in-stores. Their opening featured Hipshot Killer and Emmaline Twist. Sister Anne’s – Records and Coffee has a big back room that serves as an all-ages venue.

Aaron Rhodes in his Pitchweekly feature called the Sister Anne’s “Winterlike — warm, friendly, knowledgeable.” “This is the only thing I’ve done since 1985,” Alvarez says. “I get up and come to a record store. That’s what I do.”

Sister Anne’s hosts the SPINE WEST COAST TOUR KICK OFF, presented by Kansas City Hardcore, in an ALL AGES show tonight, Wednesday, February 20 at 6:30 with Spine, Devils Den, Constraint (from Kentucky), Brute Force (from St. Louis), and Crisis Actor.

[WMM’s theme]

2. Greg Brown – “Let The Mystery Be”
from: Freak Flag / Yep Roc / May 10, 2011
[Iris Dement’s song “Let The Mystery Be” from her debut Infamous Angel, from 1992. This song was covered by David Bryne, 10,000 Maniacs, Bun E. Carlos, and many others, it also became the theme song for the 2nd season of The Leftovers. While Greg Brown was recording this album, lighting hit the studio where Greg Brown he was recording songs for his 24th album: Freak Flag, the title track was all that remained of the lost original album. Greg wrote ten new songs, recording them at Memphis, Tennessee’s legendary Ardent Studios. Produced by Bo Ramsey, the album also includes a cover of Pieta Brown’s song ”Remember the Sun.”]

Thanks for tuning into WMM, here on 90.1 FM KKFI – Kansas City Community Radio,
I’m Mark Manning. Today we celebrate the birthday of Iris DeMent, born January 5, 1961, in rural Paragould, Arkansas. She was the youngest of 14 children. At the age of 3, her devoutly religious family moved to California, where she grew up singing gospel music. During her teenage years, Iris was exposed to country, folk, & R&B, drawing influence from Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, & Joni Mitchell.

Iris moved to the midwest, and after a series of jobs as a waitress and typist she wrote her first song at the age of 25. She moved to Kansas City and played Harling’s Upstairs and open-mic nights alongside Scott Hrabko and Howard Iceberg. Iris met producer Jim Rooney in Nashville, in 1988, who helped her land a record contract.

Iris Dement made her recording debut in 1992, with her independently produced album, “Infamous Angel.” The record won critical acclaim and John Prine mentioned Iris in his list of favorite recordings of the year published in Rolling Stone. Despite a complete lack of support from country radio, the word of mouth praise for Iris DeMent’s “Infamous Angel” earned her a deal with Warner Bros Records, which reissued “Infamous Angel” in 1993. The album also included the song, “Let The Mystery Be” a composition that has also been covered by David Bryne, 10,000 Maniacs, Bun E. Carlos of Cheap Trick, Greg Brown, and it was the theme song for the second season of HBO’s The Leftovers.

Today we feature music from Iris DeMent’s six full length albums, her vast collaborative studio work with artists such as: Greg Brown, John Prine, Nancy Griffith, Emmylou Harris, Tom Russell, Steve Earle, and Kansas City’s own, Gary Kirkland.

And we’ll also feature music from Iris DeMent’s inspirations: Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Joni Mitchell, Merle Haggard and Bob Dylan.

Please stay with us.

Full disclosure, I love Iris DeMent. I’ve seen her live in concert over 8 times. I met Iris DeMent when I was working at Kinkos at 39th & Rainbow in 1992. Iris came in to copy press clippings, she was in the process of releasing her debut album. I wasn’t familiar with her music until I saw her on Late Night with Conan O’Brien in 1995, where she performed her song, “My Life.” I was blown away. I had video-taped the show, and I would replay that song for everyone that came to visit. I wanted everyone to know about Iris DeMent.

I ran into Iris at Classic Cup in Westport. By this point I had become a big fan of her music and I was sort of star stuck, but she approached me and asked, “How do I know you?” Our friendship was able to continue because we shared a mutual friend named Anne Winter, who invited me to a holiday party in Iris Dement’s River Market condo where we sang old fashioned hymns, with members of The Wilders. Anne Winter had become a close friend of Iris and even went out “on the road” with her at one point. Because of Anne, I stage managed a show at the Uptown Theatre with Michael Moore, Iris deMent and the Wilders all performing. Anne Winter also helped arranged for Iris to play one of our Big Bang Buffet shows in 1999 at The Hobbs Building. In 2002 Iris agreed to do a benefit show for Friends of Community Radio. At this point she was living in Coleman Heights in Kansas City and invited Linda Wilson and I to a home cooked meal at her house, to talk aver the details of the show. In 2004 Iris and Greg Brown performed together in a show with Amy Goodman of “Democracy Now!” to raise over $10,000.00 for KKFI. Iris never took a penny from any of these shows, and has always been such a generous supporter of 90.1 FM. She recognized as a singer songwriter how important community radio is for independent artists like herself, and she has always given back, to help keep this radio station alive. Because of Iris DeMent’s generosity, and in honor of our dear friend Anne Winter, who we lost in 2009, I vowed to pay tribute to Iris on her birthday, each year, with this radio show.

Influences of Iris DeMent

3. Loretta Lynn & Jack White – “Portland Oregon”
from: Van Lear Rose / Interscope / 2004 [produced by Jack White of The White Stripes and Racontuers. It was initially intended as a musical experiment, blending the styles of country singer-songwriter Lynn and producer White, who performs on the whole album as a musician. At the time, Lynn was 69 and White was 28. The title refers to Lynn’s origins as the daughter of a miner working the Van Lear coal mines. The album was the most successful crossover music album of Lynn’s 45-year career. At the 2005 Grammy Awards, Lynn won: Best Country Album and Best Country Collaboration with Vocals for her duet with White.]

4. Johnny Cash & Joni Mitchell – “Girl From North Country”
from: The Best of The Johnny Cash TV Show / Columbia Legacy / 2007
[a TV music variety show that ran for 58-episodes from June 7, 1969 to March 31, 1971 on ABC. It featured many folk/country musicians of the time: Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Linda Ronstadt, Kris Kristofferson, Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, Merle Haggard, James Taylor and Tammy Wynette. It also featured other musicians such as jazz great, Louis Armstrong, who died 8 months after recording the show. Recorded at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, then home of the Grand Ole Opry. The first show featured Joni Mitchell, Cajun fiddler Doug Kershaw, Fannie Flagg and Bob Dylan. The show included a “Country Gold” segment that featured legends never seen on network TV such as Bill Monroe & his Blue Grass Boys. Cash refused to cut the word “stoned” from Kris Kristofferson’s “Sunday Morning Coming Down”, he stood by his Christian faith “despite network anxieties”, and persisted in bringing on Pete Seeger whose anti-Vietnam song on another network had “caused a firestorm.” He premiered his Man in Black song on an episode filmed at Nashville’s Vanderbilt University’s campus. The show was dumped in 1971 as part of ABC’s so-called “rural purge,” which also claimed that network’s The Lawrence Welk Show.]

5. John Prine w/ Iris Dement – “We’re Not The Jet Set”
from: In Spite Of Ourselves / Oh Boy / 1999
[In 1968 country superstar George Jones witnessed a fight between Tammy Wynette and her husband Don Chapel. At Jones’s urging, Wynette and her daughters drove away with him. Wynette and Jones married Feb. 16, 1969, and Wynette’s 4th daughter, Georgette, was born in 1970. Jones and Wynette, were nicknamed the “President and First Lady” of country music, and they recorded a string of hit duets that seemed drawn directly from their volatile relationship, which resulted in their divorcing in 1975. Their classic recordings included “Two Story House,” “Golden Ring,” and the humorous “(We’re Not) The Jet Set.” ]

6. Loretta Lynn – “You Ain’t Woman Enough To Take My Man”
from: Legends of Country Music / Columbis Legacy / 1997
[Live performance for Austin City Limits taped in 1983. Loretta Webb was the second of 8 children; grew up in Butcher Holler, a section of Van Lear, a mining community in Kentucky. Growing up with such humble roots had a huge effect on Lynn’s life and heavily influenced her music as an adult. Her autobiography describes how, during her childhood, the community had no motor vehicles, paved roads, or flush toilets. She married Oliver Vanetta Lynn, known as “Doo,” on Jan. 10, 1948, at age 13. In an effort to break free of the coal mining industry, at 14, Lynn moved to the logging community Custer, Washington, with her husband. The Lynns had 4 children – Betty Sue, Jack Benny, Cissy and Ernest Ray – by the time Loretta was 18, and in her early 20s she then had twin girls, Peggy & Patsy. No stranger to controversy, Loretta Lynn possibly had more banned songs than any other country music artist, prior to The Dixie Chicks, including “Rated X,” about the double standards divorced women face, “Wings Upon Your Horns,” about the loss of teenage virginity, and “The Pill,” lyrics by T. D. Bayless, about a wife and mother becoming liberated via the birth control pill. Her song “Dear Uncle Sam,” released in 1966 during the Vietnam War, describes a wife’s anguish at the loss of a husband to war. It has been included in live performances during the US – Iraq War.]

Influences of Iris DeMent

Iris DeMent represents that place in the road, where Country and Folk music merged with honest stories, of working class people, not afraid to tell the truth about the times they are living through. Iris DeMent grew up singing gospel music. During her teenage years she was first exposed to country, folk, and R&B, drawing influence from Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, and Joni Mitchell.

8. Johnny Cash – “Ring of Fire”
from: 16 Biggest Hits / Columbia Legacy / 2007
[co-written by June Carter (wife of Johnny Cash) and Merle Kilgore. The song was recorded on March 25, 1963 and became the biggest hit of his career, staying at #1 on the charts for 7 weeks. “Ring of Fire” refers to falling in love – which is what June Carter was experiencing with Johnny Cash at the time. Some sources claim that June had seen the phrase, “Love is like a burning ring of fire,” underlined in one of her uncle A. P. Carter’s Elizabethan books of poetry. She worked with Kilgore on writing a song inspired by this phrase as she had seen her uncle do in the past. In the 2005 film, Walk the Line June is depicted as writing the song while agonizing over her feelings for Cash despite his drug addiction and alcoholism as she was driving home one evening. She had written: “There is no way to be in that kind of hell, no way to extinguish a flame that burns, burns, burns”. Cash claims he had a dream where he heard the song accompanied by “Mexican horns”. Four years after the song was released, Carter and Cash were married which Cash states helped to stop his alcohol and drug addictions. Cash’s daughter, Rosanne has stated, “The song is about the transformative power of love and that’s what it has always meant to me and that’s what it will always mean to the Cash children.]

9. Bob Dylan – “I Shall Be Released”
from: The Essential Bob Dylan / Columbia – Sony / 2000
[Originally recorded October, 1971. ]

10. Joni Mitchell – “For The Roses”
from: For The Roses / Asylumn / 1972
[Released between her 2 biggest commercial and critical successes – “Blue” and “Court & Spark”. In 2007 it was one of 50 recordings chosen that year by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry. The title song “For the Roses” was Mitchell’s farewell to the business; she took an extended break for a year after. The album was critically acclaimed with The New York Times saying “Each of Mitchell’s songs on For the Roses is a gem glistening with her elegant way with language, her pointed splashes of irony and her perfect shaping of images. Never does Mitchell voice a thought or feeling commonly. She’s a songwriter and singer of genius who can’t help but make us feel we are not alone.” A nude photograph of Joni Mitchell was included on the inside cover of the original LP and is included in the CD booklet. The photograph shows the singer from the rear and was taken from a considerable distance; she is shown standing on a rock and staring out at the ocean. This created some controversy at the time.]

Iris DeMent’s first three releases, all on Warner Brothers records, were critically acclaimed, and she received two Grammy nominations during this time, in the “Folk Music” category. Meanwhile country radio completely overlooked her original songs, and amazing voice that has been compared to Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette. For her 1992 debut record, John Prine wrote the liner notes.

[Read the liner notes from John Prine]

Then we’d all have something to cry about.”

Greg Brown

In the 2002 Iris DeMent did a benefit concert for The Friends of Community Radio at Unity Temple on The Plaza. I remember when Iris asked us if it was okay that she have a musician friend open the concert for her, we agreed because Iris was donating her talent to the cause of community radio. And then she told us that this musician friend was Greg Brown, who at this point was known all over the country, but had never before played KC.

Later that year, on November 21, 2002 Greg married Iris DeMent in a private ceremony in the office of Rev. Sam Mann of St. Mark Church in East KC.

Grammy Nominated Greg Brown is one of the most repected singer songwriters working in music today. He started singing professionally at the age of 18 organizing early folk concerts in New York City, Portland, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. In the 1980s, he worked and toured extensively as musical director for Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion radio program. He also founded his own record label, named Red House Records after a home in which he lived in Iowa.

Greg Brown has released over 30 recordings and has allowed much of his music to be used to raise funds and awareness for environmental and social causes. His songs have been performed by Willie Nelson, Jack Johnson, Carlos Santana, Michael Johnson, Ani DiFranco, Shawn Colvin, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Iris DeMent and Joan Baez.

20. Greg Brown – “Wippoorwill”
from: Evening Call / Red House / 2006
[The Washington Post writes, “The singer-songwriter from Iowa has a baritone as rough and chunky as Thanksgiving gravy with the turkey bits still in, and that’s just how his words drip out on his album, “The Evening Call.” on “Whippoorwill” he sing as sweetly as his lover down in Kansas City. That’s his wife, Iris DeMent, and on “Joy Tears,” he tells her, “When you start your singing, honey, the heavens open up with grace.”]

21. Greg Brown – “Bucket”
from: Evening Call / Red House / 2006

In 2004 Iris DeMent independently released her 4th album, and her first in 8 years. It was a collection of protestant gospel hymns that she grew up hearing her mother sing. The album is called “Lifeline” and includes one original song called, “He Reached Down,” a song inspired by a sermon delivered by Rev. Sam Mann at St Mark Church in Kansas City.]

22. Iris DeMent – “He Reached Down”
from: Lifeline / Flariella / November 2, 2004
[Lifeline is the fourth album released by singer-songwriter Iris DeMent, released in 2004, eight years since her previous recording The Way I Should. Lifeline contains many traditional Protestant gospel songs DeMent describes as finding comfort in playing and singing. In her liner notes, DeMent recounts how her mother sang these songs in times of stress looking straight at the sky, “as if she were talking to someone.” DeMent’s rendition of “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms” accompanies the closing credits of the Coen brothers’ True Grit (2010). Thom Jurek of Allmusic writes: “… [DeMent] claims that for her, too, the music contained here became her lifeline through a season of hardship… While this is far from a full return to form for Dement, it is truly good to have her back.” Music critic Robert Christgau wrote “Her heart cherishes Jesus’ memory, but her mind, voice, and soul remain her own.”]

After Lifeline it would be 8 more years before Iris DeMent would release another album.

Iris gave audiences a taste of her new music during a sold out benefit concert at The Folly Theatre with Greg Brown on November 11, 2011. The benefit was organised by friend Rev. Sam Mann for the St. Mark Child and Family and Development Center. Iris and Greg helped Rev Mann raise over $50,000.00 for the center that serves children and families on the east side in Kansas City.

Iris DeMent’s 2012 album “Sing The Delta” received glowing reviews from the UK publication UNcut, The New Yorker, The Boston Globe, The Chicago Tribune, and was in many Top Ten Lists of KC music affictionados, including being #1 on our list of WMM’s The 112 Best Recordings of 2012.

23. Iris DeMent – “Livin’ On The Inside”
from: Sing The Delta / Flariella / October 2, 2012
[Her first full-length release of original songs since 1996. Iris was our special guest on our Oct 10, WMM.]

In 2015 Iris DeMent released her 6th album, with national acclaim, and a #5 spot on WMM’s 115 Best Recordings of 2015. The Trackless Woods sets 18 poems by acclaimed 20th century Russian poet Anna Akhmatova to life. Hailed as one of Russia’s finest poets, Akhmatova survived the Bolshevik Revolution, both World Wars and Stalin. When Iris randomly stumbled upon Akhmatova’s work in a book of poetry a friend sent as a gift, she was immediately taken by the sorrow and burden of the poems. Iris recorded the album with co-producer Richard Bennett in her living room over a five-day period. The project also fulfilled a long yearned-for desire to connect with her adopted daughter’s culture and history. Iris and her husband Greg Brown adopted their daughter from Siberia in 2005, when she was 6, and Iris says ”I’d never have made this record were it not for her.”

After reading that first poem the melodies began pouring out of her, and before she even fully understood what was driving her, Iris was gathering musicians & friends, including co-producer Richard Bennett (Emmylou Harris, Neil Diamond, Steve Earle), to record ‘The Trackless Woods’ in her living room over a 5-days. The result is a pairing of piano and voice in Iris’ style with timeless melodies that are rooted in the American South.]

Like Russian poet Anna Akhmatova, Iris DeMent has never shied away from lending her voice to justice and social causes. On March 2, 2017 in response to the election and policies of current President Donald Trump, Iris released her latest song “We Won’t Keep Quiet” on You Tube. Written and performed by Iris DeMent with members of the Iowa City community who sang with her, and participated in the Lift the Ban Rally in Iowa City, the Women’s March in Des Moines, and the Women’s March in Washington, D.C. The song has not been released anywhere other than You Tube.

As she recently told an interviewer, “There’s a lot that goes into life besides songwriting.” And she’s taken her time in composing songs that fit into no genre easily.”

Happy Birthday Iris DeMent! Thank you for all of the great music and thank you for donating your talents to raise thousands of dollars for non-for-profit charities in Kansas City including 90.1 FM – KKFI. We love you Iris DeMent!

Wednesday MidDay Medley Celebrates Iris DeMent

WMM presents our annual celebration of Iris DeMent, born January 5, 1961, in rural Paragould, Arkansas.

Iris moved to the midwest and after a series of jobs as a waitress and typist, she wrote her first song at the age of 25.

We’ll feature music from Iris DeMent’s six full length albums, her contributions to film, her vast collaborative studio work with artists such as: Greg Brown, John Prine, Nanci Griffith, Emmylou Harris, Tom Russell, Steve Earle, and Kansas City’s own, Gary Kirkland.

We’ll also feature music from Iris DeMent’s inspirations: Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Joni Mitchell, Merle Haggard and Bob Dylan.

Tributes to Iris DeMent & David Bowie
+ Michelle Bacon & Katy Guillen of The Band That Fell To Earth

In our 1st hour, we celebrated the birthday of Iris DeMent, born January 5, 1961, in rural Paragould, Arkansas.

Iris moved to the midwest and after a series of jobs as a waitress and typist, she wrote her first song at the age of 25.

We started the show with a song originally from that album called, “Let The Mystery Be” that was lovingly covered by her husband, the great folk singer songwriter – Greg Brown. “Let The Mystery Be” has also been covered by David Bryne, 10,000 Maniacs, Bun E. Carlos of Cheap Trick, and it was the theme song for the second season of The Leftovers.

Full disclosure, I love Iris DeMent. I’ve seen her live, in-concert, over 8 times.

At this point she was living in Coleman Heights in Kansas City and invited Linda Wilson and I to a home-cooked meal at her house, to talk aver the details of the show.

Records”

[Debut studio album. In 1995, her song “Our Town” was played in the closing moments of the last episode of CBS TV series Northern Exposure. “Let the Mystery Be” became theme for the 2nd season of The Leftovers.]

Iris followed up her debut record with the autobiographical, “My Life,” released in 1994 and quickly followed with her third Warner Brother’s release, “The Way I Should,” released in 1996, which contains some of Iris DeMent’s most political songs.

In the 2002 Iris DeMent did a benefit concert for The Friends of Community Radio at Unity Temple on The Plaza. I remember when Iris asked us if it was okay that she have a musician friend open the concert for her, we agreed because Iris was donated her talent to the cause of community radio. And then she told us that this musician friend was Greg Brown, who at this point was know all over the country, but had never before played KC.

Later that year, on November 21, 2002 Greg married Iris DeMent in a private ceremony in the office of Rev. Sam Mann of St. Mark Church in East KC.

Grammy Nominated Greg Brown is one of the most respected singer songwriters working in music today.

[The Washington Post writes, “The singer-songwriter from Iowa has a baritone as rough and chunky as Thanksgiving gravy with the turkey bits still in, and that’s just how his words drip out on his album, “The Evening Call.” on “Whippoorwill” he sing as sweetly as his lover down in KC. That’s his wife, Iris DeMent, and on “Joy Tears,” he tells her, “When you start your singing, honey, the heavens open up with grace.”]

14. Iris DeMent – “Listening to Singing”
from: The Trackless Woods / FlariElla / August 7, 2015 [6th album from Grammy nominated Iris DeMent who NPR said was ”one of the great voices in contemporary popular music.” The Trackless Woods sets 18 poems by acclaimed 20th century Russian poet Anna Akhmatova to life.

As she recently told an interviewer, “There’s a lot that goes into life besides songwriting.” And she’s taken her time in composing songs that fit into no genre easily.”

Iris released her 5th album, “Sing The Delta” in 2012, to glowing reviews from the UK publication UNcut, The New Yorker, The Boston Globe, The Chicago Tribune, and was #1 on WMM’s 112 Best Recordings of 2012. And Because we have lost so many great folks in 2016, I find it fitting to end this hour long tribute with “Go On Ahead and Go Home” from Iris DeMent’s album, Sing the Delta. Happy Birthday Iris DeMent. We love you!

17. James Murphy – “Golden Years”
rom: While We’re Young (Original Soundtrack) / Power Elite / March 23, 2015
[Born February 4, 1970. James Murphy is a musician, producer, DJ, and co-founder of record label DFA Records. His most well-known musical project is LCD Soundsystem. James Murphy was influenced by Bowie and remixed songs for Bowie’s The Next Day Extras, and is credited as a percussionist on Bowie’s Backstar.] [“Golden Years” was written and recorded by David Bowie in 1975, and originally released in a shortened form as a single in November 1975, and in its full-length version in January the following year on, Station to Station. It was the first track completed during the Station to Station sessions, a period when Bowie’s cocaine addiction was at its peak. “Golden Years” was more similar in style to the Young Americans funk/soul material from earlier in 1975 than the rest of Station to Station, that foreshadowed the Kraftwerk-influenced Euro-centric and electronic music that Bowie would move into with his ‘Berlin Trilogy’.]

David Bowie seemed to be from another world. I thought he was immortal. His art kept coming. His influence so vast. He was a guide. So much of my journey, as a queer kid finding my way in the world, was influenced by Bowie.

David Bowie was born January 8, 1947. In school he studied art, music, and design before embarking on a music career in 1963. Over a span of 5 decades, he sold over 140 million records and released 27 studio albums, if count Tin Machine, which you should. His career is notable for his reinvention, his pushing of the boundaries of gender, art and music. He was the first to create a concert tour that was a big as a broadway touring show. He was also an actor in many influencial films including: The Man Who Fell to Earth, The Hunger, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, Basquiat, and 20 other films. He also played John Merrick in The Elephant Man on Broadway. He influenced multiple generations with his music, films, music videos, and concert tours.

Bowie was a gateway to other discoveries: The Velvet Underground, Lou Reed, T-Rex, Iggy Pop, Andy Warhol, Glam Rock, Electronica, Brian Eno, William S. Burroughs, Kraftwerk, Mick Ronson, Tony Visconti, Klaus Nomi, Bauhaus, Gender Expression, and much more.

A year ago on January 10, 2016, two days after he released his 25th solo album, Blackstar, on his 69th birthday, David Robert Jones passed away at home surrounded by his wife Iman, son Duncan Jones from his marriage to Angela Bowie, and daughter Alexandria from his marriage to Iman. David Bowie’s death sent shock waves of grief across the world.

For his song, “Sweet Thing,” Bowie first used the William S. Burroughs’ “cut-up style” of writing. Sweet Thing was from Diamond Dogs, Bowie’s 8th album, released May 24, 1974.

She began her career playing violin with the Dambuilders. Throughout her career, she has regularly collaborated with other artists as a writer, performer and arranger. Kansas City artist Krystle Warren has toured around the world with her.] [“Sweet Thing” or “Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing (Reprise)” is a suite of songs written by David Bowie for the album Diamond Dogs. Recorded in January 1974, the piece comprises the songs “Sweet Thing” and “Candidate” and a one-verse reprise of “Sweet Thing.” In the opening line, “Sweet Thing” contains the lowest note Bowie had recorded in a studio album (C2) until “I Took a Trip on a Gemini Spacecraft” for the album “Heathen” (2002), where he growled the word “Well” (G1) towards the end of the song. Diamond Dogs was the 8th studio album from Bowie, was released May 24, 1974, after the ‘retirement’ of Bowies’s Ziggy Stardust, character. Diamond Dogs featured a new lead character named Halloween Jack, “a real cool cat,” who lives in the decaying “Hunger City”. Bowie, however, still wore the Ziggy haircut on the cover of Diamond Dogs, and the first single, “Rebel Rebel” continues his glam rock sound. However, with the rest of the album, music writers noticed a new Bowie. For his song “Sweet Thing” / “Candidate”/ “Sweet Thing (Reprise)” Bowie first used the William S. Burroughs’ cut-up style of writing. The song “1984” reflected the “plastic soul” sound of Bowie’s next release, Young Americans, from 1975. The Diamond Dogs Tour of 1974 was one of the first huge Rock and Roll, bus and truck tours. Bowie produced the show with a giant set, like a big Broadway production.]

David Bowie’s song ”Lazarus” was released on December 17, 2015, making it the second single from his twenty-fifth studio album “Blackstar”, as well as his last single released before his death on January 10, 2016. The track is used in Bowie’s off-Broadway musical of the same name. “Lazarus” was Bowie’s first top 40 hit single on the Billboard Hot 100 in more than 28 years. According to Bowie’s producer Tony Visconti, the lyrics and video of “Lazarus” were intended to be a self-epitaph, a commentary on Bowie’s own impending death. In November 2015 during the week of shooting for the Lazarus video, doctors reportedly informed Bowie the cancer was terminal and that they were ending treatment. The video features Bowie, appearing with a bandage and buttons sewn over his eyes, lying on a deathbed and finishes with Bowie retreating into a dark wardrobe. In the scenes featuring the wardrobe, Bowie is wearing a diagonally striped suit referencing the back cover of the 1991 CD reissue of the Station to Station album, where he is pictured sitting on the floor drawing the kabbalistic Tree of Life.

from: Blackstar / ISO Records – Columbia / January 8, 2016
[Lazarus features David Bowie on vocals, acoustic guitar, and Fender guitar; Donny McCaslin on saxophone, flute, and woodwind; Jason Linder on piano, Wurlitzer organ and keyboards; Tim Lefebvre on bass; Mark Guiliana on drums. McCaslin and the rest of the jazz group recorded their parts in the studio over a period of about one week a month from January to March 2015, and until later in recording were unaware of Bowie’s declining health. The song “Lazarus” is part of Bowie’s Off-Broadway musical of the same name. The album has received universal critical acclaim and commercial success, reaching the number one spot in a number of countries in the wake of Bowie’s death and becoming his first album to reach number one on the Billboard 200 album chart in the U.S. Blackstar is the twenty-fifth and final studio album by musician, writer, actor, chameleon, David Bowie. It is the 27th when you count the Tin Machine records, which you should. The album was released worldwide on January 8, 2016, on Bowie’s 69th birthday, and just two days later David Robert Jones passed away at home surrounded by his wife Iman, and his son Duncan Jones from his marriage to Angela Bowie, and daughter Alexandria from his marriage to Iman.]

20. David Bowie – “Boys Keep Swinging”
from: Lodger / RCA / May 18, 1979
[Written by David Bowie. It was released as a single from the album Lodger on April 27, 1979. During the Lodger recording sessions, Bowie had wanted to capture a garage band style for the track, and agreed with Brian Eno that the best way to achieve this sound was to get the band to swap instruments after this was ‘suggested’ by Eno’s deck of ‘Oblique Strategies’ cards which supplied the suggestion “Reverse Roles”. Guitarist Carlos Alomar played drums and drummer Dennis Davis played bass. RCA decided against releasing the single in the US, choosing “Look Back in Anger” instead. Bowie performed the track with a puppet body special effect on Saturday Night Live on December 15, 1979, joined by Klaus Nomi and Joey Arias as backing singers. During the broadcast NBC censors muted the lines “life’s a pop o’the cherry” and “other boys check you out”, but failed to notice the puppet’s bouncing phallus at the close of the song. It was performed only during one tour, the 1995 Outside Tour. Interviewed in 2000, Bowie said the following about the song: “I do not feel that there is anything remotely glorious about being either male or female. I was merely playing on the idea of the colonization of gender.”]

21. David Bowie – “John, I’m Only Dancing”
from: John. I’m Only Dancing – Single / RCA / April , 1973 (sax version)
[“John, I’m Only Dancing” is a single by David Bowie, released in two versions — entirely different recordings, but carrying the same catalogue number — in September 1972 and April 1973. Bowie later re-worked the song into the disco-influenced “John, I’m Only Dancing (Again),” recorded in 1974, but unreleased until 1979. The song is widely believed to be concerned with a gay relationship, the narrator informing his boyfriend not to worry about the girl he’s with because he’s “only dancing” with her. Bowie had been ‘out’ as bisexual since an interview with Melody Maker in January 1972, and the subject matter did not affect the single’s radio airplay in the UK, where it and the earlier “Starman” became his first back-to-back hits. However, the original video directed by Mick Rock, featuring androgynous dancers from Lindsay Kemp’s mime troupe, was banned by Top of the Pops. The single was not released in America, being judged too risqué by RCA and did not officially appear stateside until it was finally issued on the compilation Changesonebowie in 1976. While the hook (“John, I’m only dancing / She turns me on / But I’m only dancing”) has long been considered a gay tease, author Nicholas Pegg asserts that the song’s narrator “could just as easily be a straight man reassuring the girl’s lover”. Alternatively, it has been suggested that Bowie wrote the song in response to a derogatory comment made by John Lennon about Bowie’s cross-dressing. Musically in a light R&B style, the track was recorded on June 26, 1972, released as a single, and then re-recorded on January 20, 1973 during the Aladdin Sane sessions, in a slightly different arrangement featuring Ken Fordham on saxophone. Often called the “sax version”, the second recording was issued as a single in April 1973 with exactly the same catalogue number as the first release, causing difficulties for collectors. Generally held to be superior to the original cut, the sax reworking also appeared on early pressings of Changesonebowie before it was replaced with the original single version. In 1974, a completely reworked funk-influenced version was recorded as “John, I’m Only Dancing (Again)”, made during the sessions for the album Young Americans. Released in December 1979, the re-recording featured a much more funk-influenced take on the track, and has some similarities with the song “Stay” recorded for the Station to Station album in 1976. Originally running at 6:57, the track was cut for a 7″ single release, but the full version was issued on 12″ vinyl – the first Bowie single to have a regular 12″ release in the UK. For the B-side, the original version of “John, I’m Only Dancing” was remixed. After the relative disappointment of the singles from Lodger on the charts, the single gave Bowie some greater degree of mainstream exposure during a period when his work was increasingly being perceived as esoteric and experimental. The long 12″ version was included as a bonus track on the 1991 Rykodisk/EMI remaster CD of Young Americans, on the 2007 collectors edition of the album, and on The Best of David Bowie 1974/1979. The 7″ single version was not released on CD until 2016’s Who Can I Be Now? (1974-1976).]

We end the show with one of my favorite Bowie songs, from one of my favorite Bowie albums, from 1971’s, Hunky Dory, here’s “Kooks.”

The Band That Fell To Earth: A Tribute to David Bowie, Saturday, January 6, at 8:00, at recordBar, 1520 Grand Blvd, KCMO.

For Wednesday MidDay Medley I’m Mark Manning. Thanks for listening!

25. David Bowie – “Kooks”
from: Hunky Dory / RCA / June 11, 2002
[“Kooks” is a song written by David Bowie, which appears on his 1971 album Hunky Dory. Bowie wrote this song to his newborn son Duncan Jones. The song was a pastiche of early 1970s Neil Young because Bowie was listening to a Neil Young record at home on 30 May 1971 when he got the news of the arrival of his son. British indie band The Kooks named themselves after the song. Hunky Dory is the fourth studio album by the English musician David Bowie, released on 17 December 1971 by RCA Records. It was his first release through RCA, which would be his label for the next decade. Hunky Dory has been described by AllMusic’s Stephen Thomas Erlewine as having “a kaleidoscopic array of pop styles, tied together only by Bowie’s sense of vision: a sweeping, cinematic mélange of high and low art, ambiguous sexuality, kitsch, and class”. The album has received critical acclaim since its release, and is regarded as one of Bowie’s best works. Time chose it as part of their “100 best albums of all time” list in January 2010, with journalist Josh Tyrangiel praising Bowie’s “earthbound ambition to be a boho poet with prodigal style”. The style of the album cover, designed by George Underwood, was influenced by a Marlene Dietrich photo book that Bowie took with him to the photo shoot. With new bass player Trevor Bolder replacing Tony Visconti, Hunky Dory was the first production featuring all the members of the band that would become known the following year as Ziggy Stardust’s Spiders From Mars. Also debuting with Bowie, in Visconti’s place as producer, was another key contributor to the Ziggy phase, Ken Scott. The album’s sleeve would bear the credit “Produced by Ken Scott (assisted by the actor)”. The “actor” was Bowie himself, whose “pet conceit”, in the words of NME critics Roy Carr and Charles Shaar Murray, was “to think of himself as an actor”.]
