3. Sam Wells – “Dear Black People” (Radio Edit)

[Earlier this year on April 21, 2020, Sam Wells released her single “Sugar” produced at the Lawrence Kansas Public Library recording studio. It was only a decade ago, Sam Wells sat in her bedroom learning the Corrine Bailey Ray classic “Put Your Records On”. This was all it took to ignite a lifetime love affair with music. Now based in Lawrence KS, the singer-songwriter brings her Folk-Americana sound to the greater Kansas City area. With her smooth and sultry voice and the warm tones of a baritone ukulele, she shares stories of love, loss and everything in between. Originally from Phoenix, Arizona, Sam Wells is now based in Lawrence, Kansas where she is bringing her music to the greater Kansas City area, in many venues, and now in live stream shows. Folk Americana singer and songwriter Sam Wells joins us to talk about her first two singles, “Lesson Learned” (her debut) and “Sugar” (her latest) that is “full of energy and funk.” These two tracks are leading up to the release of Sam’s first EP, “Not Too Broken,” be released in August, 2020. 4. Crystal Rose – “Not Leaving (Stripped)”

[Earlier this year Crystal Rose released, “Not Leaving (Stripped)” on January 30, 2020. Crystal Rose released her debut single “Come Alive” on May 6, 2016. Crystal is a Kansas City based singer songwriter and UMKC journalism student who has played solo and also with Paige Turner on guitar, Peter Marten on guitar, and Robert Castillo on bass. Crystal Rose is a singer song-writer based in heart of Kansas City. At a young age she was influenced by powerhouse vocals like Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and Christina Aguilera. 6. Curtis Mayfield – “Superfly”

[[We hear in the bridge Curtis singing, “Trying to get over” the theme we hear in so many of Curtis Mayfield’s incredible recordings. Super Fly is the third studio album by American soul musician Curtis Mayfield. It was released as the soundtrack for the Blaxploitation film of the same name. Widely considered a classic of 1970s soul and funk music, Super Fly was a nearly immediate hit. Its sales were bolstered by two million-selling singles, “Freddie’s Dead” (#2 R&B, #4 Pop) and the title track (#5 R&B, #8 Pop). Super Fly is one of the few soundtracks to out-gross the film it accompanied. Super Fly, along with Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On, was one of the pioneering soul concept albums, with its then-unique socially aware lyrics about poverty and drug abuse making the album stand out. The film and the soundtrack may be perceived as dissonant, since the film holds rather ambiguous views on drug dealers, whereas Curtis Mayfield’s position is far more critical. Like What’s Going On, the album was a surprise hit that record executives felt had little chance at significant sales. Due to its success, Mayfield was tapped for several film soundtracks over the course of the decade. Curtis Lee Mayfield was born in Chicago on June 3, 1942, He died on December 26, 1999. An American singer-songwriter, guitarist, and record producer, and one of the most influential musicians behind soul and politically conscious African-American music, he first achieved success and recognition with The Impressions during the civil rights movement of the late 1950s and 1960s, and later worked as a solo artist. Mayfield started his musical career in a gospel choir. Moving to the North Side, he met Jerry Butler in 1956 at the age of 14, and joined the vocal group The Impressions. As a songwriter, Mayfield became noted as one of the first musicians to bring more prevalent themes of social awareness into soul music. In 1965, he wrote “People Get Ready” for the Impressions, which displayed his more politically charged songwriting. Ranked at no. 24 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, the song received numerous other awards, and was included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll, as well as being inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998. After leaving the Impressions in 1970 in the pursuit of a solo career, Mayfield released several albums, including the soundtrack for the blaxploitation film Super Fly in 1972. The soundtrack was noted for its socially conscious themes, mostly addressing problems surrounding inner city minorities such as crime, poverty and drug abuse. The album was ranked at no. 72 on Rolling Stone’s list of 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Mayfield was paralyzed from the neck down after lighting equipment fell on him during a live performance at Wingate Field in Flatbush, Brooklyn, New York, on August 13, 1990. Despite this, he continued his career as a recording artist, releasing his final album New World Order in 1996. Mayfield won a Grammy Legend Award in 1994 and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995, and was a double inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a member of the Impressions in 1991, and again in 1999 as a solo artist. He was also a two-time Grammy Hall of Fame inductee. He died from complications of type 2 diabetes in 1999 at the age of 57. In my tween years my mother’s record collection was changing, her second husband Al drove a van, and listened to 8-track tapes. My mom was in the RCA Music Club where they would automatically send you the new release, that’s how she ended up with the soundtrack to the film “Superfly” from Curtis Mayfield. The movie never played our town. But the soundtrack tells the story, of “Trying to get over.”]

Singer songwriter, & actor, Stephonne Singleton talks about his new EP, SIS: Side A, to be released August 7, and the single “Deep,” released July 14, 2020. Stephonne co-produced his EP with Justin Mantooth who also engineered & mixed, at Westend Studios. Joining Stephonne was Johnny Hamil on bass, Ben Byard on guitar, & Adam McKee on drums. Stephonne describes himself as the lovechild of Prince & Billie Holiday. He grew up in KCK and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Benedictine College, and Masters in Entertainment Business from Full Sail University. His debut album, “Caged Bird Sings Songs About Red Beard” was one of WMM’s 118 Best Recordings of 2018.

Stephonne Singleton, Thank you for being with us on Wednesday MidDay Medley

After 2018’s Caged Bird Sings Songs About Red Beard and the release of two singles, ‘Want Me’ and ‘Dominate’, we finally get our hands on Stephonne’s SIS: Side A EP. “With ‘Want Me’, I finally found a full confidence and strength in myself again. There were a lot of years that passed, where I really felt that I couldn’t do this independently. I stopped listening to the music and instead listened to rejection, doubt and a lot of self-sabotage.” After a 2018 New York showcase, Singleton laid in A friend’s Philadelphia bed and thought about what was next. He had taken a step he hadn’t before and it was that precise step that woke up a sleeping giant. “It all hit me at once! I got so much closer to my dream than ever before and a dream with steps and goals that I’d written down and prayed aloud for since I was 7.” ‘Want Me’ would spawn a very successful Kickstarter for its major music video and an EP that Stephonne had no idea he’d end up writing.

“‘Want Me’ had been written before my debut was released but was just sitting and, honestly, after I decided I needed to go about this alone I remembered that I was broke,” laughs the singer-songwriter. From jobs in corporate America, local theatre and drag Stephonne put his money where his dreams were. After crowdfunding success, the songs just showed up and demanded attention. SIS, in the case of this EP, actually means Summoning Insatiable Spirits.

“That is what I do every time I write a song. The spirits are my emotions, thoughts, traumas, fears and joys.” On Side A and, an upcoming, B we find those spirits. “All of these songs came to me in an instant. They are really from some relationship that I have with the ether that I can’t explain. Whole songs in 10-15 minutes that I hear over and over until I get in with the band (Johnny Hamil, Ben Byard and Adam McKee) finish writing with everyone and then record them. They are literal sprits or ghosts that demand to be heard.”

Side A’s first single, ‘Deep’, came to Stephonne on a return to MCI from SEA. “There I was… crying on the plane like a big ass baby because of some dude I fell in love with and knew it wouldn’t work out with. The melody and lyrics hit me like a brick and after trying to hide my weeping face from the two passengers next to me, I went to that tiny bathroom and got everything on my phone.” Like ‘Want Me’, the pop gem would sit and scream at Stephonne until late 2019. The influence of 90’s and early 00’s radio rock reigns supreme on ‘Deep’ and we find Stephonne in his greatest melodic and lyrical territory yet. “I feel like you are always trying, unsuccessfully, to write a hit and with every single one of these songs there was no trying. I listened to life, wrote it down and got out of my own way.” Each song holds its ground without overproduction and a desperation for chart placement that holds back many industry hopefuls. What is delivered is sincere, raw but refined, pure and honest music that is accessible no matter your love of genre. With that being said, that this is a rock record is undeniable. “The frustrating thing for me about it, is that radio and audiences look at my skin color and automatically label everything as Hip-Hop and R&B. I’d say I did music as a kid and people would ask me if I was a rapper without even a second passing… Music of every genre has BLACK origin and yet where are we on the radio? We continue to carry the industry on our backs and are still having to use the back door!”

The genre jumper doesn’t deny his R&B, Soul and Jazz influences on SIS. It’s quite the opposite. Rock and R&B collide with the sultry, silky and vocal grit of Stephonne. He is an artist who conjures up the spirits of Prince and Billie Holiday (his biggest influences) but that delivers something inimitable, visceral, strange and beautiful. Even on the sugary and hyper sexuality of ‘Sweet Tooth’ and the dark but hopeful beauty of ‘Middle Man’, there is a triumphant transcendence that was a staple of yesteryears Popular music. A time when saturation wasn’t heavy and when artist development was embraced over carbon copying. “I only have interest in being me. Sis, I’m Black, unapologetically Queer, and very sex positive. I’m at a point in my life where I embrace every single part and won’t spend energy on anything but self-love, my music and the things that I can help with to change this world for the better.” SIS: Side A reflects all of the above exclamations of Stephonne but it also puts him in position to step into the world’s radar and officially begins his legacy as one music’s greatest treasures.

Stephonne Singleton slinks and slides into ears with ‘Want Me’. The dark and slickly polished track oozes of sex, confusion and tension. “Those things describe my coming of age as a black gay man. I’ve put my heart and mental health through a lot, trying to find love.” With Stephonne you find a painfully personal style of writing. Here, he delves into the point of view of an ex-lover. “I kept trying to make it work and the outcome was always the same. It was so confusing, that it haunted me. I was with a person who loved me but that didn’t want anything to do with love. I was just a body for sex and a cheerleader when he decided it was game on.” The song was his final straw and a way to make sense of what he’d been through. It also examines the hookup culture of apps like Grindr and Scruff. “The app culture feels like shopping at a butcher shop for meat. It’s a bunch of ghosts, most of the time, who appear and disappear as soon as they cum. Sex can be utility but I suddenly don’t exist after that?!” Being black, becoming fetishized and turned away from members of queer communities has been an often occurrence for the singer-songwriter.

The writing and production comes solely from the Kansas City native, with a huge helping hand from co-producer, Justin Mantooth. Recorded at Westend Recording Studios the track features Johnny Hamil on bass, Ben Byard on guitar and Adam McKee on drums. Singleton continues to defy genre, but instead of dipping his toe into his alternative rock roots he takes a deep dive in. Still marked by breathy vocals, buttery falsetto, gospel rasp and innate jazz sensibilities, the track and brand new music video lift Stephonne to new heights. 

The “Want Me” video transports us into the center of a horror movie. Surrounded by candles and ancient vigil work, Stephonne is painted in a nod to Grace Jones and Kieth Haring. Artist, Ryan Wilks makes Stephonne and the set a canvas, where he resurrects someone he probably shouldn’t. From a mere snap, we travel through a film noire that is equal parts Nosferatu, The Craft and an inescapable heat and sexuality that emit from both the songwriter and featured dancer, Courtney Germany. “I needed black girl magic in this video and what was most important to me was to have someone who could express every bit of agony and yearning in the song with their body.” Courtney is breathtaking. Choreographed by Ashley Personett of Empire Dance Academy and That’s Entertainment KC, Germany turns into a lovelorn golem who will do anything for the attention of its maker. “There is a magic that BIPOC hold within us that comes from a 24/7, 365 day struggle just to survive. On top of that, we also have to live, love and try to find time to heal. We are worthy of so much more than this world gives us.” In this way, Stephonne becomes a symbol for what’s not given and for what doesn’t wish to be given in the video.

The multi-layered and cinematic masterpiece was helmed and directed by Method Media. You may know them from the critically acclaimed and TIME magazine reviewed/featured videos by Kansas City natives, SSION (Inherit, At least The Sky is Blue and Comeback). Every detail is given the utmost attention by director and editor, Jordon Rioux. Every tone, shot and transition contains an edge and sophistication that only heightens this supernatural affair. The video production is an affair of its own. A Kansas City love affair that showcases the talents, locations (filmed at Heidi Van’s Black Box) and savvy of a slept on city that has recently gained new notoriety due to shows like Queer Eye. “We are a city full of so much treasure and promise! Every part of this video was responsible because of Kansas City businesses, costume/jewelry makers, artists and more. I will always rep my city.” Over half of the funding for the musical thriller was given by KC locals through a very successful Kickstarter last year!

‘Want Me’ is currently available on all digital/streaming platforms but will also appear on the upcoming EP, SIS: Side A. SIS means Summoning Insatiable Spirits. “That is what I do every time I write a song. The spirits are my emotions, thoughts, traumas, fears and joys. It is like the ritual in the video but without blood and body paint,” laughs Stephonne. The ‘Want Me’ video ushers us into a slew of Alternative Rock tracks that are witchy, infectious, ready for radio and that bring R&B and Pop in the mix to create something inimitable but richly accessible. “I just want to make my city proud but I’ve got a lot in store for the entire world. It’s time to enter that stage.”

9. Eydie Gorme & Los Panchos -“Piel Canela”

[Recorded In New York February 14, 18 and 19, 1964. Hecho en México ℗1964. Guitar – Alfredo Gil, Chucho Navarro, Johnny Albino The trio became one of the leading exponents of the bolero and the romantic ballad in Latin America. Its current members are Chucho Navarro Jr., Eduardo Beristian and Misael Reyes. A characteristic instrument of Los Panchos and other Mexican tríos románticos since the 1950s is the requinto guitar, which is smaller and tuned higher than a standard guitar and was popularized by Alfredo Gil. Requinto solos found in many bolero recordings by Los Panchos. Los Panchos first met in 1944 in New York City.[1] The three original members were Chucho Navarro, and Alfredo Gil, both from Mexico, and Hernando Avilés from Puerto Rico. All three played guitar and contributed vocally. Los Panchos reached fame with their romantic songs, especially in Latin America where they are still regarded as one of the top trios of all time. They sold millions of records in Latin America and other countries. In the 1940s they collaborated with Alfredo Antonini’s Viva America Orchestra with the orchestral accordionist John Serry Sr. in a recording of “La palma” (a cueca) and “Rosa negra” (a conga) for Pilotone Records (#45 5067, #45 5069). They also appeared in around 50 movies, mostly during the Golden Age of Mexican cinema. Los Panchos began touring internationally in 1946 and would relocate later that same year to Mexico City. They were welcomed with open arms and XEW-AM, the most popular radio station in Mexico City, reserved a time slot for their music. In 1951, Los Panchos launched another international tour across Latin America. Julito Rodríguez joined the group in 1952; he was replaced by Johnny Albino in 1958. Johnny Albino and Chucho Navarro—Miguel Poventud and Yomo Toro were studio musicians for CBS—famously worked with singer Eydie Gorme on a series of bestselling albums in the 1960s. The Albino era was one of the most prosperous ones for Los Panchos whose classic albums are very popular among Los Panchos fans still. His departure in 1968 was a tumultuous one, as he did not leave on good terms with the group’s management. In 1971, Ovidio Hernández joined the band as lead vocalist, a part he would fulfill until his untimely passing of complications of meningitis in 1976. Following him, Rafael Basurto Lara joined as lead singer. A very interesting note, and one that not everyone knows about, is that during the illness of Ovidio Hernández and the integration of Rafael Basurto to the trio, Alfredo Gil (the trio’s director) met the Puerto Rican singer, David Ortiz, in New York City, and amazed by the quality of his voice and style, asked him to come to Mexico and sing with Los Panchos. David Ortiz accepted the invitation and was with the Trio Los Panchos for several months. However, after fulfilling several commitments with the trio, David Ortiz returned to New York. Alfredo Gil played with Los Panchos until his retirement in 1981; he died in 1999. Chucho Navarro played with the group until his death in 1993. Currently the trio using the Los Panchos name is the Trio Los Panchos de Chucho Navarro Fundador (“Trio Los Panchos of Founder Chucho Navarro”) under the direction of Chucho Navarro Jr., the son of original Los Panchos member Chucho Navarro.][Eydie Gormé died in 2013 at age 84. Her groundbreaking career in Latin music, highlighted by the 1964 album “Amor” recorded with Trio Los Panchos. When it comes to Latin-music icons, Las Vegas veteran Eydie Gormé isn’t exactly the first name that leaps to mind. But to generations of Hispanics, Gormé is eternally linked with nostalgic sounds in Spanish. The primary reason is “Amor,” her luminous 1964 collaboration with Mexican vocal group Trio Los Panchos. “Most artists have an album or two that define them,” says Texas journalist Ramiro Burr, author of “The Billboard Guide to Tejano and Regional Mexican Music.” “The Beatles have ‘Sgt. Pepper.’ Nirvana has ‘Nevermind.’ For Eydie Gormé, that timeless album is ‘Amor.'” Since its release more than 40 years ago, the disc has never gone out of print. It’s the biggest-selling album in Gormé’s long career. In the ’90s, Sony repackaged the album along with its 1965 sequel, “More Amor,” and the disc made the Latin charts all over again. Gormé’s career in Spanish may seem surprising until one looks at her background. The New York-born singer is the daughter of Sephardic Jews and grew up speaking mainly Spanish at home. Columbia Records President Goddard Lieberson came up with the concept of recording one of his top female vocalists with Los Panchos, a big-selling trio a few years past their prime.
“He was a really sophisticated, international man,” Lawrence recalls. “He knew of Eydie’s Spanish background. He thought of Los Panchos, and they were aware of Eydie. They all met in the studio, and it was like they were old friends.” Los Panchos chose the songs. Most of them were established tunes, such as “Piel Canela,” “Amor” and “Cuando Vuelva a Tu Lado,” that had been recorded by scores of artists. “They were drinking a lot of wine on those sessions,” she says with a laugh. “They were lovely people. Drunk, but lovely.” Whatever the reason, the artists had a once-in-a-lifetime chemistry.]]

10. Prince – “Gotta Broken Heart Again”

[Dirty Mind is the third album by American recording artist Prince. It was released on October 8, 1980, by Warner Bros. Records as the follow-up to his self-titled second album, Prince, (1979). It was produced, arranged, and composed entirely by Prince in his home studio in Minneapolis, Minnesota during May to June of 1980. Dirty Mind has been considered by critics as Prince’s most creative and boldest album, setting the baseline for his artistic direction in the following years. During the spring of 1980, Prince and his backing band members Dez Dickerson, André Cymone, drummer Bobby Z, and keyboardists Doctor Fink and Gayle Chapman spent nine weeks on the road opening for Rick James, a musical rival of Prince. Following the end of James’ tour, Prince returned to Minnesota and rented a house in Wayzata where he set up a 16-track studio. During the recording of the album, Doctor Fink’s jam-out during a rehearsal provided the basis for the album’s title track. A fusion of post-disco, new wave, funk and dance, Dirty Mind is more prevalent in punk sounds than Prince’s previous albums. Prince’s high and feminine vocals, along with his androgynous image during the Dirty Mind era, has been recognized for bringing attention to gaydar. Controversially, the album’s theme is fueled by explicit topics including oral sex, threesome and ejaculation, which has been credited for opening the doors for sexually explicit albums in the coming years. The first single of Dirty Mind, “Uptown” reached number five on both the Billboard Hot Soul Singles and the Billboard National Disco Action Top 30 charts. Though the album only reached number 45 on the Billboard 200, it earned widespread acclaim from music critics and crossover success. Due to its fusion of genres, critics have hailed it for setting the sound for urban black music of the early 1980s. The album has been ranked by several publications as one of the greatest albums of all time. // Prince Rogers Nelson (June 7, 1958 – April 21, 2016) was an American singer-songwriter, musician, record producer, dancer, actor, and filmmaker. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest musicians of his generation. A multi-instrumentalist who was considered a guitar virtuoso, he was well known for his eclectic work across multiple genres, flamboyant and androgynous persona, and wide vocal range which included a far-reaching falsetto and high-pitched screams. Prince’s innovative music integrated a wide variety of styles, including funk, R&B, rock, new wave, soul, synth-pop, psychedelia, pop, industrial, and hip hop. He pioneered the Minneapolis sound, a funk rock subgenre that emerged in the late 1970s. He was also known for his prolific output, releasing 39 albums during his life, with a vast array of unreleased projects left in a vault at his home after his death; it is believed that the vault contains dozens of fully produced albums and over 50 music videos that have never been released, along with various other media. He released hundreds of songs both under his own name and multiple pseudonyms during his life, as well as writing songs that were made famous by other musicians, such as “Nothing Compares 2 U” and “Manic Monday”. Estimates of the complete number of songs written by Prince range anywhere from 500 to well over 1,000. Born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Prince signed a recording contract with Warner Bros. Records at the age of 19. In 1984, he and his backup band, The Revolution, released his sixth album Purple Rain, which was also the soundtrack to his hugely successful film acting debut of the same name. It quickly became his most commercially successful record, spending 24 consecutive weeks atop the Billboard 200.[5] The film also won the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score, the final film to receive the award. After disbanding The Revolution, Prince released the critically acclaimed double album Sign o’ the Times (1987). In the midst of a contractual dispute with Warner Bros. in 1993, he changed his stage name to the unpronounceable symbol Logo. Notes from Heath Church’s debut EP The Things I’ve Learned: THEMES & CONCEPTS DISCUSSED Coping with Life in Less Than Ideal Ways And Failing Miserably

The EPs main theme is sort of a tragicomic story of trying to find ways to cope with day to day life struggles but feeling trapped by the resulting disappointment that often comes from temporary solutions such as alcoholism and materialism. Below is part of a verse from the title track “The Things I’ve Tried” that reflects this theme.

“I tried drinkin’ alcohol to forget the things I saw, but every drink just brought back memories”

Running to a Place of Comfort

In “Kansas City Train”, I used my hometown to speak to the desire that most people have to leave their regular life behind for a new and brighter future. This track is more than just the desire to jump on the train out of town – It’s about wanting a new life that is free from the stressors we encounter everyday. I have always loved my hometown of Kansas City, Missouri and remember plenty of times when I was away at college longing to return to it and start a new life. The song isn’t just about Kansas City though. It’s really about the hope of a more promising future full of new friends and people who care about you. Below is a line from “Kansas City Train”.

Birthday is Nicole’s response to acknowledging the birthday of a family member removed from her life, is a nuanced recognition of both sorrow & joy, grief & peace, and a sincere hope that happiness rests in the heart of a loved one long gone. Last year The Nicole Springer Band released the EP Willing. On the April 10, 2019 WMM Nicole shared the radio debut of her single, “Hell.” Nicole Springer was the founder and songwriter of: The Clementines, The Good Hearts, Heart Machine, Nikki and the Rooftop Punch, and her solo projects. Nicole has performed at numerous festivals . Nicole Springer has a big amazing voice; once you hear it, you cannot ignore this voice. She defies categories because her voice sounds like so many things; Rock, Pop, Folk, Gospel, Broadway, and Blues. Nicole sings from the heart, writing every song to be a reflective piece of her life story and as a means to evolve and grow as a human. We first met Nicole as part of The Clementines, originally a duo with Tim Jenkins who played LIVE on our April 25, 2012 edition of WMM. In the true courageous spirit of DIY, she started her first band by putting an advertisement on Craigslist for a guitarist. The band added Stephanie Williams on drums, and Travis Earndshaw on bass. In 2014 she was the recipient of both a Pitch Music Award and Project Backstage Award. Nicole Springer grew up in Oak Grove, MO, and graduated high school in 2004. She studied Music-Vocal/Choral at Missouri State University, in Springfield, MO, and Special Education with Music at Metropolitan Community College, in KC. Nicole told The Pitch (Jan. 10, 2012 article): “I grew up singing in gospel choirs. I still love gospel music, though I’m not religious or anything. I did musicals throughout high school.” When she was 19, Nicole was disowned and made homeless by her family because of her sexual orientation. 15 years later she released her music video “Come Clean” dedicated to her wife Bethany Cain and the LGBTQIA Community. Nicole has recently found new confidence in her music and in telling her own story of her life. Last November Nicole was on the cover of Camp Kansas City Magazine in a feature written by John Long, where Nicole talks about being homeless, being rejected by her family for being lesbian, and overcoming her own fears while pursuing a career as a musician. The album was produced by Mitchell Froom, and other contributors include Matt Chamberlain, Jim Keltner, and Blake Mills. “Trouble in Paradise”, released in October 2019, served as the album’s lead single. “Damsel in Distress”, “Peaceful Afternoon”, and “Alone Time” were released in February, March, and April 2020, respectively. Originally scheduled to be available on April 24, the album’s release date was pushed back to July 24 because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Rufus McGarrigle Wainwright was born July 22, 1973, He is an American-Canadian singer, songwriter, and composer. He has recorded nine albums of original music and numerous tracks on compilations and film soundtracks. He has also written two classical operas and set Shakespeare sonnets to music for a theater piece by Robert Wilson. Wainwright’s self-titled debut album was released through DreamWorks Records in May 1998. His second album, Poses, was released in June 2001. Wainwright’s third and fourth studio albums, Want One (2003) and Want Two (2004), were repackaged as the double album Want in 2005. In 2007, Wainwright released his fifth studio album Release the Stars and his first live album Rufus Does Judy at Carnegie Hall. His second live album Milwaukee at Last!!! was released in 2009, followed by the studio albums All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu (2010) and Out of the Game (2012). The double album Prima Donna (2015), was a recording of his opera of the same name. His ninth studio album Take All My Loves: 9 Shakespeare Sonnets (2016), featured nine adaptions of Shakespeare’s sonnets. Wainwright is the son of musicians Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, and the older brother of singer Martha Wainwright.]

Proceeds from the concerts provided seed money for the Kate McGarrigle Foundation a non-profit organization dedicated to raising money in the fight against sarcoma and also to preserving her legacy through the arts. Net proceeds from the sale of Sing Me the Songs also will be donated to the Foundation. The double-disc set was produced by Joe Boyd, who curated the concerts, and features performances by Rufus and Martha Wainwright, Anna McGarrigle, Emmylou Harris, Antony, Norah Jones, and Teddy Thompson, among others. The New York concerts were filmed for a feature documentary entitled Sing Me the Songs That Say I Love You: A Concert for Kate McGarrigle, directed by Lian Lunson and produced by Luson and Teddy Wainwright. Candid interviews with McGarrigle’s family and friends are paired with rousing performances of her music.] [Originally from KC, Krystle learned to play the guitar by listening to Rubber Soul & Revolver from The Beatles. Krystle graduated from Paseo Arts Academy in 2001 and began her musical career in collaborating with area jazz and pop musicians. After living in San Francisco and NYC, Krystle was signed to a French label, Because Music, and moved to Paris to release “Circles” in 2009. Krystle played French and British television programs, including Later with Jools Holland, garnering critical acclaim and traveling all over the world with Rufus Wainwright, Nick Cave, Norah Jones, and Joan As Police Woman. Krystle created, Parlour Door Music, to release “Love Songs: A Time You May Embrace” a recording from a 13-day session in Brooklyn, where she recorded 24 songs live with 28 musicians including her band, The Faculty, alongside choirs, horn and string sections. Krystle followed up Love Songs with her 2017 album Three The Hard Way, Produced by Krystle Warren and Ben Kane (D’Angelo, Emily King, PJ Morton). Recorded, engineered, and mixed by Ben Kane. Written & performed by Krystle Warren. Mixed at The Garden, Brooklyn. Mastered & cut by Alex DeTurk at Masterdisk. Last year in Krystle Warren premiered this song and her other new songs from this album at the Middle of the Map Fest in a packed room at Californos in Westport and later at The Polsky Theatre for the Performing Arts Series of Johnsons County Community College. For this record Krystle decided to play every instrument and vocals & back up vocals, “playing bass, drums, lap steel, piano, guitar, and vocals directly to analog tape. She and Ben Kane recorded in Villetaneuse, France, a small town on the outskirts of Paris in a vintage 70s era studio that offered just the right, rich sound to suggest the musical foundation for the record, and to do justice to the duo’s carefully balanced arrangements.” On the radio show last year Krystle shared inspirations for this record, early gospel recordings, that crossed over into Jazz from Pharoah Sanders, Edwin Hawkins, and The Swan Silvertones.]

[There’s a Riot Goin’ On is the fifth studio album by American funk and psychedelic soul band Sly and the Family Stone. It was recorded from 1970 to 1971 at Record Plant Studios in Sausalito, California and released later that year on November 20 by Epic Records. The album’s recording was dominated by band frontman Sly Stone during a period of drug use and intra-group tension. Its music embraced a darker and more challenging sound than the optimistic style of the band’s previous releases, making use of hard funk rhythms, primitive drum machines, extensive overdubbing, and a dense mix. The album’s planned title was Africa Talks to You, but it was retitled in response to Marvin Gaye’s album What’s Going On, released six months before. There’s a Riot Goin’ On reached the Billboard Pop Album and Soul Album charts at number one upon its release, while its lead single “Family Affair” topped the Pop Singles chart. By 2001, it had sold one million copies and been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).[8] Received with ambivalence upon its release, the album is now praised as one of the greatest and most influential recordings of all time, and ranked at or near the top of many publications’ best album lists. [On June 26, 2020 Eddie Moore’s We The People released “Misunderstood” with a music video. This was the first single from the up-coming debut record of Eddie Moore’s group We The People. We The People is a power trio stemming from the roots of Black American Music, Hip-hip, Psych-Rock, and Classical. Over 25 Kansas City-based musicians came together to create “Kansas City Syzygy,” a compilation of music created during the shutdown of the world in the Spring of 2020. “Syzygy” is a term most commonly used in astronomy and is defined as “connected or corresponding events.” Album designer JC Franco states “like planets or stars aligning, so did our lives.” The nineteen songs on the album span the entire spectrum of music. Calvin Arsenia’s “Painted Ladies” is a dreamscape sung form his voice and harp, while Seth Andrew Davis’ “No Place But Home” invokes scenes of an underground dance club. Some musicians are collaborating for the first time on this album, as demonstrated on “Abyss.” Local electronic musician Chris Crabtree and Robert Castillo, bandleader of the groove jazz ensemble The Sextet, worked together with vocalist Audrey Chopin to create an experimental piece of EDM-adjacent music. [Born in Orlando, Florida, Calvin’s creative journey really began when he moved to the KC suburb of Olathe, teaching himself the guitar, and eventually the harp. He learned his signature instrument at the age of 20 after he couldn’t find a harpist as determined as him to meld folk, rock, classical, rap and R&B into the irresistible fusion which has become his calling card in the Kansas City music scene and beyond. His passion for stretching the boundaries of musical expression saw him transform a trip to Edinburgh, Scotland’s Fringe Festival early in his career into a life-changing music mission, with an Edinburgh church offering him a role as musical liaison between the church and the city that would change his life. [Marvin Gaye What’s Going On Live is the only live performance by Marvin Gaye of his landmark 1971 album What’s Going On — his first concert for four years. Recorded at the Kennedy Center in his home town of Washington DC during the city’s Marvin Gaye Day on May 1, 1972 and then shelved for decades, it was released on CD in 2001 as part of the expanded deluxe edition of the album, but it has never before been issued on vinyl or as a CD in its own right. What’s Going On Live has been newly mixed by John Morales at M+M Mix Studios and mastered by Alex Abrash at AA Mastering. Its vinyl debut is in black 2LP and limited 2LP turquoise editions with deluxe gatefold packaging. The vinyl and CD packages of What’s Going On Live include rare images from Gaye’s performance as well as new liner notes by his biographer, David Ritz, who describes it as “an invaluable and vibrant historical document marking a milestone in the artist’s career.” The album includes the only known live recordings of Gaye performing four songs: ‘That’s The Way Love Is’ and ‘You’ (which opened the Washington concert as part of a meditative 13-minute medley), ‘Right On’ and ‘Wholy Holy.” A delay in switching reel-to-reel tapes during the concert meant that his performance of the What’s Going On hit ‘Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)’ was not successfully recorded. ‘Wholy Holy’ is now available for streaming and immediate download with pre-orders of the album. Marvin Gaye Day began with the Motown idol’s speech to students at Cardozo High, the school he had himself attended. Then a motorcade took Gaye and his parents to various other locations around Washington, including the office of city mayor Walter Washington, who presented Gaye with a key to the city. Then came a VIP reception at the US House of Representatives’ Rayburn House Office Building, before Gaye took to the stage of the Kennedy Centre at around 11pm. It was his first live show since 1968, and he gave only one other brief performance in the year of 1972 the following month, a short set in Chicago on 27 September which was filmed and recorded for the documentary Save the Children. Gaye later told Ritz about the withdrawal from performing that followed the tragic early death of his friend and Motown recording partner Tammi Terrell. “I understood that I’d been punishing myself by staying away so long,” he said. “I’d been denying myself love, and that’s one of the most foolish things a man can do.” Of Marvin Gaye Day, he added: “It was certainly the biggest day of my parents’ life. Here they came to Washington in the thirties without a penny, and their son was being honoured by the mayor as some sort of hero. At least on this one day I felt like I made Father proud.”

[Flora Purim (born March 6, 1942) is a Brazilian jazz singer known primarily for her work in the jazz fusion style. She became prominent for her part in Return to Forever with Chick Corea and Stanley Clarke. She has recorded and performed with numerous artists, including Dizzy Gillespie, Gil Evans, Opa, Stan Getz, George Duke, Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead, Santana, Jaco Pastorius, and her husband Airto Moreira. In 2002, Purim was the recipient of one of Brazil’s highest awards, the 2002 Ordem do Rio Branco for Lifetime Achievement. She has been called “The Queen of Brazilian Jazz”.]

5. Dona Onete – “Mexe Mexe”

[Dona Onete (born June 18, 1939) is a Brazilian singer & composer. She has been referred to as the “Queen of Carimbo”. She was born Ionete da Silveira Gama in Cachoeira do Arari and grew up in Igarapé-Miri. By the time that she was fifteen, she was singing songs from traditional music genres such as sambas, quadrilles and boi bumba. She taught history & Amazonian studies in Igarapé-Mir and conducted research into rhythms, dances and traditions of the region. She helped establish music & dance groups which preserved traditional music and customs. From 1993 to 1996, she served as secretary of culture for the municipality. Onete recorded her first album Feitiço Caboclo when she was 73. She developed her own hybrid genre of music carimbo chamegado. After she retired to Pedreira [pt], she continued to perform. Together with a local band, she has performed throughout Brazil as well as in the UK, France, Portugal and NYC. In 2013, a biography of Onete Menina Onete – Travessias & Travessuras was published by anthropologist Antônio Maria de Souza Santos and educator Josivana de Castro Rodrigues. In 2017, she was named Brazilian Ordem do Mérito Cultural.]

6. Christone “Kingfish” Ingram – “Outside of This Town”

[Christone “Kingfish” Ingram (born January 19, 1999) is an American blues guitarist and singer from Clarksdale, Mississippi, United States, who became a well known performer as a teenager. His debut album, Kingfish, was released in May 2019. In addition to his own album, musicians he has recorded with include Eric Gales, Buddy Guy and Keb Mo. He has shared the stage with well-known blues artists and younger blues musicians such as The Tedeschi Trucks Band, Samantha Fish, Bob Margolin, Eric Gales, Rick Derringer, Guitar Shorty and Buddy Guy.One of his earliest influences is Muddy Waters. Christone Ingram was born to Princess Pride and Christopher Ingram of Clarksdale, Mississippi in 1999. His extended family sang and performed in church. Ingram grew up attending gospel performances, and while still young joined groups to play and perform. His mother, Princess Pride, is first cousin to country music legend Charley Pride. He listened to and learned from music by Robert Johnson, Lightnin’ Hopkins, B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Jimi Hendrix, Prince and others. Ingram became interested in the blues around age 5 when his father showed him a PBS documentary about Muddy Waters, and at the same time promised they would go to the Delta Blues Museum to learn all about the music. He was taught how to play by Bill “Howl -N- Mad” Perry and Richard “Daddy Rich” Crisman at the arts and education program of the museum. He has also attended Clarksdale’s Pinetop Perkins Workshop Experience, where the events are held every summer. He started playing drums at age six. By the time he was eleven he was playing bass and then he moved to guitar. He appeared on the Rachael Ray and the Steve Harvey shows. By the time he was fifteen, he had received offers to perform and for custom guitars.His early teachers gave him the name “Kingfish”. Ingram described how he explained his interest in the Blues to his childhood friends who were interested in hip hop music: “They really thought it was funny, cause it was like “Man you young but you listen to that old, sad stuff.” I’m like, “Man, I ain’t really like that, I’m listening more for a culture thing, you know? This is history. This birthed what you guys listen to today, because you know rap is nothing but the blues’ grandchild.]

[Joan Shelley was born in 1985,. She is a songwriter and singer from Louisville, KY. She draws inspiration from traditional and traditionally-minded performers from her native Kentucky, as well as those from Ireland, Scotland, and England, but she’s not a folksinger. Her disposition aligns more closely with that of, say, Roger Miller, Dolly Parton, or her fellow Kentuckian Tom T. Hall, who once explained—simply, succinctly, in a song—“I Witness Life.” Since the 2015 release of her fourth album Over and Even, Shelley has crossed the country and toured Europe several times as a headlining artist, joined by guitarist Nathan Salsburg and sharing shows with the likes of Jake Xerxes Fussell, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Doug Paisley, Daniel Martin Moore, the Other Years, and Michael Hurley. She has opened for Wilco, Chris Smither, Andrew Bird, and Richard Thompson. Jeff Tweedy produced her 2017 record “Joan Shelley” at The Loft in Chicago. She’ll be familiar to readers of guitar-centric magazines for having appeared, in the same season, on the covers of Fretboard Journal and Acoustic Guitar. Her latest album, “Like the River Loves the Sea,” was released to wide acclaim in Uncut magazine, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, Mojo, and Q magazine. Her second album, Ginko, and third album Farthest Field (with Daniel Martin Moore) were released in 2012 on Ol Kentuck. In 2014, Shelley released her fourth album, Electric Ursa, on No Quarter Records. In 2015, Shelley released her fifth album, Over and Even, on No Quarter. 9. Angel Olsen – “All Mirrors”

[4th album from Angel Olsen who was born January 22, 1987. She is an American singer-songwriter and musician from St. Louis, Missouri who currently lives in Asheville, North Carolina. At age three, Olsen was adopted by a foster family that had cared for her since shortly after her birth. The difference in years between her and her parents left an impression. “Because there are so many decades of difference between us, I became more interested in what their childhood was like,” she says of her parents, both of whom still live in St. Louis. “I fantasized about what it was like to be young in the ’30s and ’50s, more so than other kids my age.” Olsen explained that “my mother just has this capacity for children.” Despite early adolescent aspirations to be a “pop star”, her interests later shifted in high school. Olsen became more introverted, regularly attending punk rock and noise music shows at the Lemp Neighborhood Arts Center and the Creepy Crawl as well as Christian rock shows throughout the city. She began learning the piano and guitar and writing her own music. Two years after graduating from Tower Grove Christian High School, Olsen moved to Chicago.After releasing her first EP, Strange Cacti, and a debut album, Half Way Home, on Bathetic Records, Olsen signed with Jagjaguwar, ahead of her first full-band record, Burn Your Fire for No Witness, which was released on February 17, 2014. Olsen’s third full-length album, My Woman, was released on September 2, 2016. In addition to her work with Bonnie “Prince” Billy and The Cairo Gang, Olsen has collaborated with a number of other notable figures of American indie rock, including Tim Kinsella of Cap’n Jazz, LeRoy Bach of Wilco and Cass McCombs. Her collaboration with Kinsella and Bach, as well as with Chicago poet Marvin Tate, resulted in the album Tim Kinsella Sings the Songs of Marvin Tate by Leroy Bach Featuring Angel Olsen which the group released on Indianapolis label Joyful Noise Recordings on December 3, 2013. Her song “Windows” was featured in the final episode of the Netflix original series 13 Reasons Why.]

13. J.S. Ondara – “Saying Goodbye”

[J.S. Ondara is a Kenyan singer-songwriter whose debut album, Tales of America, was released on February 15, 2019 via Verve Label Group. J.S. Ondara was born in August 1992 in Nairobi, Kenya. As a child, he wrote poems and stories as well as songs despite not having an instrument to play them on because his family couldn’t afford one. He was inspired by Radiohead, Nirvana, Death Cab For Cutie, Jeff Buckley, Pearl Jam, Guns N’ Roses, and Bob Dylan. He grew up listening to rock songs on his older sisters’ battery-powered radio. Having discovered The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan following a dispute with a friend over whether Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door was a Guns N’ Roses song, Ondara resolved to travel to the United States to pursue a career in music. In February 2013, after winning in the green card lottery, he moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota at the age of 20. He taught himself to play guitar and perform during open mic nights. Eventually, he decided to study music therapy in college, but dropped out of school to return to playing small shows at coffee houses after attending a concert. After moving to Minnesota, Ondara tried his hand at making music and performing in small venues. His big break came when Minneapolis radio station KCMP 89.3 The Current played one of his songs on air by pulling audio from his YouTube channel, where he had been uploading covers of his favorite songs. At the time, he was going by the name Jay Smart. Ondara’s debut album, Tales of America, was released in February 2019 by Verve Label Group. Despite only 11 tracks making the final tracklist, Ondara wrote more than 100 songs for the album, all based on an immigrant’s life in America. The album was produced by Mike Viola of the Candy Butchers. In support of the album, Ondara embarked on his first headlining tour in March 2019. After the release of the album, Ondara debuted on Billboard’s Emerging Artist chart at No. 37 in March 2019. The album also landed on the Billboard Heatseekers Album, Americana/Folk Album Sales, and Rock Album Sales charts. He was nominated for Best Emerging Act at the 2019 Americana Music Honors & Awards. [Michael Samuel Kiwanuka (born 3 May 1987) is an English indie and folk rock singer-songwriter and record producer who is signed with Polydor Records. His 2012 debut album Home Again went gold in the United Kingdom and his second album, Love & Hate, debuted in 2016 at number one. He has been nominated for numerous honors, including the Brit Awards, MTV Europe Music Awards, Mercury Prize, BBC Music Awards. In January 2012, he won the BBC’s Sound of 2012. Born and raised in Muswell Hill, London, Kiwanuka is the son of Ugandan parents who escaped the Amin regime. He attended Fortismere School, leaving there in 2005 after completing his A-Levels. He went on to study at the School of Media, Arts and Design at the University of Westminster. Kiwanuka worked as a session guitarist, playing with Chipmunk and Bashy before working as a solo artist. His first proper gig was at The Oxford in Kentish Town at age 22. He came to the attention of Communion Records, which released his first two EPs, including his debut Tell Me A Tale on 13 June 2011. Kiwanuka supported Adele on her Adele Live 2011 tour, as well at her iTunes Festival 2011 gig, and played at the 2011 Hard Rock Calling. In 2011, he signed a deal with Polydor Records. He was included in the BBC’s Sound of 2012 poll and was named as the winner on 6 January 2012. In June 2012, he was illustrated in a BBC article regarding Spain vis-à-vis Uganda during the Eurozone crisis; his putative counterpart was actress Penélope Cruz. Kiwanuka released his debut studio album, Home Again, in 2012 to positive reviews from critics. The album peaked at number 4 in the UK and, as of 2012, has sold over 70,000 copies in the UK. They began jamming, and together with Correia and Dunham’s fellow school friend, Miles Michaud, formed the band. They released their first 7-inch recording in 2011, “Catamaran/Long Journey”, produced by Nick Waterhouse for his Pres label. In 2012, they released a second single, “Tell Me (What’s on Your Mind)/Sacred Sands”, produced again by Waterhouse but this time for their new label, Innovative Leisure. One reviewer commented that “their sound is steeped in the pop sensibilities of The Zombies, The Kinks and The Yardbirds, laced with Northern Soul, lo-fi funk and the ever-enduring influence of Arthur Lee and Love”. Allah-Las were featured in a Daytrotter session in May 2012 and their performance of Catamaran was named one of the top 200 Daytrotter songs of the year. In September 2012, Allah-Las released their self-titled debut LP, also produced by Waterhouse for Innovative Leisure. The album has been described as “an effortlessly wistful batch of starry-eyed, minor-key beauties that gently ruminate on the usual young-guy subjects: sex, freedom, the ways the former can interfere with the latter and vice versa”. In October 2012, NPR’s World Café featured two songs of Allah-Las, noting that “the music captures the carefree, breezy sounds of California… dreamy romanticism [with] a vibe that can feel both joyous and melancholy”. In October 2019, the album landed at no. 22 on Happy Mag’s list of “The 25 best psychedelic rock albums of the 2010s”, labeled as “a staple in surf-rock and ’60s revival.” Allah-Las completed their first tour in 2011, up the California coast from San Diego to San Francisco. They toured the East Coast and Europe during 2012, where their first show in London, UK was described by The Guardian as “a blissful 45 minutes on a cold night”. In 2014 they released their second album, Worship the Sun. The group released their third album, Calico Review, on September 9, 2016, out on Mexican Summer. The album was recorded in 2016 at the Valentine Recording Studio in Los Angeles.]

Shawn Stewart started playing music in Kansas City after he moved here from Chicago in 1991. His band, “Tin Roof Echo” played venues around town through 1993 when he retired to the suburbs to raise a family as a “stay at home dad.” In 2014, after his kids were grown, he moved to midtown to pick up where he left off. He released four albums under the moniker, “JohnnySuperColossal” and today is releasing is newest album, Radio, under his own name.

Jon “Piggy” Cupit was a graduate of the Kansas City Art Institute, in the fibers department. Jon Piggy Cupit is a multi media artist. He’s always had an affinity to the theatre & stage, both in front of the curtain and behind it, starting his career in the 5th grade as the back end of a dancing donkey and things have just been coming up roses ever since. Just last week Jon finish an extended run of “Golden Girls Gone Wild Part 3” for Late Night Theatre, where he has also appeared in “The Birds,” “The Stepford Wives,” “Super Models in Space” (a show he wrote) and many other productions. Jon designed the set for David Wayne Reed’s Mother Trucker. In the 1990s with his Thunder Pussy Productions, and with Big Bang Buffet Jon created multiple performance art pieces integral soundtracks, video projections and lots of wigs.

As a teen, he played guitar in garage bands while studying with his mentor, Haitian classical guitarist and composer Frantz Casseus. He moved to New York City in 1978. Fay Victor was born July 26, 1965. She is an American musician, composer, lyricist and educator. The band currently consists of primary recording artist and core member David Longstreth (vocals, guitar), alongside longtime bass guitarist Nat Baldwin, Mike Daniel Johnson (drums), Maia Friedman (guitar, keyboards, backing vocals), Felicia Douglass (percussion, keyboards, backing vocals) and Kristin Slipp (keyboards, backing vocals). Since its formation the band has released eight full-length studio albums, and has had numerous lineup changes, with major contributions from guitarist and vocalist Amber Coffman from 2006 to 2013. “If 2017’s Dirty Projectors was the band’s dark night of the soul, Lamp Lit Prose marks a vibrant rebirth. Bright, colorful, and bursting with hope, the music here splits the difference between pop instinct and avant-garde ambition, live-band rigor and super-synthetic production—think Talking Heads for the 2000s. They realized they had similar taste in music, and began playing together, at first as “BoboMosie,” a CocoRosie cover band and eventually composing originals as Seasaw. Seasaw’s album “Too Much Of A Good Thing” was selected as one of the top five underground albums of the month by The Nerdist in July 2016. The same month, they were named Top Emerging Artist at Wisconsin Summerfest. [Debut self-titled EP from Julie Berndsen on lead vocals, Adam Phillips on drums, Brandon Phillips on guitar, Zachary Phillips on bass. Hailing from the musical hotbeds of KCMO, and Lawrence, KS, and comprised of members of The Architects, Latenight Callers, Radar State and Brandon Phillips and The Condition, Other Americans is a virtual Midwestern supergroup of sorts. The cohorts first crossed paths in when a mutual friend and matchmaker introduced Brandon Phillips to vocalist Julie Berndsen “We were all looking for something new to do musically, recalls Brandon. “The way I remember it, a mutual friend (KC music producer Joel Nanos) told me that Julie was looking to start something new and I sent her a note about it. We had tacos to see if we liked each other.” The duo enlisted drummer Adam Phillips, bassist Zachary Phillips and late keyboardist Ehren Starks, who passed away suddenly in March 2018, and began writing the material that would become the EP. The band premiered their video for lead single, “Murdering Crows,” directed by artist Adrian Halperin, via The Spill Magazine in May 2018 Superlatively catchy and conjuring up well-intentioned comparisons to Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Fiery Furnaces, and even a jauntier and more aggressive Passion Pit, the new EP captures the excitement and spontaneity that punctuates coastal indie rock while embracing elements of the electronic dance rock that populates midnight warehouse parties. “All the basic tracking [for the EP] was done at Element Recording and was mastered by Joel Nanos,” Brandon Phillips reported. “Then I took it to my spot and worked and reworked it all for a year until it sounded like something none of us had heard before.”. The band’s video for their song, “Make Me Afraid,” was directed by Todd Norris & Mitch Brian./. Illuminated with the knowledge that the journey is as important as the destination, Phillips admits to looking forward to the period of dues paying that their debut brings. “I’m looking forward to all the firsts;. first show. first record. first tour. Magical thinking could have me pining for a post-Grammys Maserati coke party by the sea, but if I’m all wrapped up in making that fantasy come true, I’ll miss the fun of being present for the firsts and the fifths and the tenths.” From there the plan becomes a bit more complicated, “ The ‘Plan” as I see it is to con some major label artist into taking us out as support, steal their identities on laundry day, have reconstructive surgery, then only tour in countries without U.S. extradition treaties,” Brandon jokes. ]

[Manchester, England born Danny McGaw was a footballer, then a street musician, then a bar music, and then a husband and father living in Lawrence, Kansas, where he released one of our favorite recordings of 2012 – “Eccles Road.” After that he formed the band, Welles The Traveler with Jason Jones, Dan Hines, Chad Brothers, and Mike West, who produced the group’s debut recording. Eventually Danny and family relocated to California. He has made 10 records in 14 years and records his songs in his home studio. Danny is back in KC this week for multiple gigs and to be part of the 87th Annual Plaza Art Fair, Sept. 21-23.]

New York artist & musician Ted Riederer joins us to talk about Never Records a collaborative project exploring the potential of a record store and record label to unite, educate, and uplift a community through recorded sound. Never Records began in January 2010, in an abandoned Tower Records near Union Square in New York City. Soon the project expanded to become a mobile record-making lab with Riederer traveling from city to city, opening a vinyl record shop with recording equipment and a vinyl record lathe to cut two, four-minute records on the spot for people who visit the store. A “one-time refugee from punk and sometime band member,” Ted Riederer has armed himself with painting supplies, electric guitars, amplifiers, old LPs, record players, drum kits, hard disk recorders, photography equipment, a vinyl record lathe, and long-stemmed roses as he’s ambled artistically from the Americas to the Antipodes. His work has been shown nationally and internationally including exhibitions at PS1, Prospect 1.5, Goff and Rosenthal Berlin, Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery, Jack Hanley Gallery (San Francisco), Marianne Boesky Gallery, Context Gallery (Derry, Ireland), David Winton Bell Gallery (Brown University), The University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum, the Liverpool Biennial, and the Dhaka Arts Center, Bangladesh. His “Never Records” project has traveled from New York, to Liverpool, to Derry, to New Orleans, to Texas, and to London, which was sponsored by the Tate Modern.

Ted Riederer is the Founding Artistic Director of Howl! Happening: An Arturo Vega Project, non-profit gallery/performance space in the East Village. The New York Times has described Howl! Happening as, “Instrumental to the history of the area.” Howl! Happening’s thriving publishing imprint A/P/E has included essays by: Ai Wei Wei, Dan Cameron, Anthony Haden-Guest, Robert Nickas, Michelle Grabner, Michael Musto, C. Carr, Nicole Rudick, John Lyons, and James Wolcott.

New York artist and musician Ted Riederer launched Never Records in 2010 as part of a collaborative project with curators No Longer Empty in the former sales floor of Tower Records’ fabled East Village flagship store. One year later, Never Records had expanded to become a mobile record-making lab, using recording equipment and a vinyl record lathe to cut two, four-minute records on the spot for whoever walks in the door (one copy stays behind in the fast-growing library).
Never Records opened August 25, 2018 as part of Open Spaces Kansas City, and runs through October 28th, 2018, in a storefront space in the Crossroads district of Kansas City. The space is located at 1611 Oak St., Kansas City, MO 64108.

The exhibition will be open from Wednesday – Sunday from 10am-6pm. There will be a series of workshops and special events. A calendar of events will be posted on the Never Records website http://www.neverrecords.net.

Never Records is a combination recording studio and record shop, all operating in one building. The sole proprietor, interior decorator, and engineer is New York-based artist Ted Riederer. Inspired by his own redemptive education at a young age inside the walls of a local record store in Rockville, Maryland as well as the field recording projects of Alan Lomax, Riederer devised his unique community art installation in the early part of this century and has been replicating it with regional variations throughout the world since 2010.

Performers from a locale sign up for recording sessions ahead of time, with no auditions necessary. Riederer usually offers three hour sessions, during which he mixes on the fly and cuts vinyl right in front of the artist’s eyes once both are satisfied with a particular take. The recordings are free to the artist, the sessions are open to the public, and you can’t buy anything you see. Ted hasn’t lowered prices by cutting out the middleman. He is the middleman. He is not a vertical operation; he is an elliptical one, a constant feedback loop supplying its own demand. Still, everyone takes something home, even if it’s the barest speck of record shop camaraderie inadvertently inhaled.

Within the walls of the Never Records shop, visitors can view a gallery of photographs and artwork from previous temporary establishments in the US and UK, as well as flip through stacks of vinyl representing the hundreds of solo folk artists, punk bands, storytellers, jazz groups, and noisicians who jumped at the chance for a free recording session. Black wooden bins hold a curated selection of records from the growing collection, but these aren’t for sale or even trade.

The artist or band is allowed to take their own copy home, and another is added to Riederer’s archives, as well as a digital copy. Riederer encourages bands to use the recording any way they want. There are no fees, royalties, or ownership issues.

“I walk them through the cutting process and show them their sound waves on a microscope. I consider this interaction the real performance of Never Records. The alchemy of cutting never fails to put a smile on participants’ faces. The machine is a new one made by these crazy but wonderful dudes in southern Germany. It is called a Vinyl Recorder and while it may not be able to compete with a $50,000 Neumann cabinet lathe, I can get pure, beautiful, hiss free recordings.”

Beyond the technical aspect of recording, his main job is to maintain the right conditions inside the shop for insecurity-free performances. The right conditions go beyond the gear and the Persian rugs covering the floors. The right conditions exist separately from the poster-covered walls or the fact that the distribution chain from studio to factory to anti-commercial outlet runs about twelve feet. The right conditions include Riederer’s ability to quickly ascertain a band’s influences and capabilities and the vast cross-genre knowledge that allows him to alter his recording methods for each artist. The right conditions have everything to do with musicians in eyesight of each other, no one isolated in a booth. Everyone experimenting without worry because the meter isn’t running on dead air, eating up the credit limit.

Never Records has a slogan. It is YOU ARE NOT LISTENING. Riederer explains, “A lot of people say that certain movements just need a voice. But it doesn’t matter if you have a voice if no one is fucking listening! You can have the most articulate voice, but if no one’s listening, it’s like the voice doesn’t matter. You gotta listen. Someone has to listen, and this process I take very seriously.”

In a world where bands are judged on 30 second samples and MP3s are collected and traded like baseball cards with no thought to the hard work and personalities behind their creation, Never Records creates a physical reminder of what a virtual platform can never truly duplicate.

Yesterday and Today was more like a social library, a meeting place for musicians and artists, than a retail space. Never Records is my love letter to the record store. In the ruins of the one of the great retail giants of the end of the last century, a casualty of modernity and the Great Recession, we will reclaim the spirit of music and commune amongst the wreckage.

11. Lovergurl – “Rebel”

[Recorded and mastered with RLT at Audibly Recording. KC based 4-piece band, Lovergurl caught our ear with their synth pop sound and lyrics reflecting social and political messages with hip hop and punk elements. The trio released their EP, The President is a Sex Offender on May 19, 2017. Keyboardist and vocalist, Stephanie Bankston was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. She is a graduate of The University of Missouri. She moved abroad in her 20s, and lived in Seoul, Korea, where she played in a mostly female band called BaekMa (“White Horse”). Stephanie returned to Kansas City in the Fall 2015. Brook Worlledge, is 26 years old and is a Kansas City native. She is the band’s drummer and she sings and writes songs for the band. Brook is a defender of the proletariat. Brook’s influences range from The B-52s, The Velvet Underground, and The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Lovergurl guitarist and vocalist, Heather Andrews is also 26. She was born and raised in Rhode Island, and moved to Kansas City in 2011 and fell in love with the city.]

12. Anna Calvi – “Don’t Beat the Girl Out of My Boy”

[3rd album from London singer. Produced by Nick Launay (Nick Cave) at Konk Studios in London with some further production in LA, the album was recorded with Anna’s band – Mally Harpaz on various instruments and Alex Thomas on drums – with the addition of Adrian Utley from Portishead on keys and Martyn Casey from The Bad Seeds on bass. It has a new rawness, a primal energy into which Calvi pushes the limits of her guitar and voice beyond anything she’s recorded before. Hunter is the embodiment of the feeling of truly letting go. For the songwriter and virtuosic guitarist, it was a catharsis, an opportunity to be more truthful than ever. The first new music since 2014’s collaborative release with David Byrne, Strange Weather EP, her self-titled debut album and the 2013 follow-up One Breath, Hunter is a visceral album exploring sexuality and breaking the laws of gender conformity. A queer and a feminist record, it is galvanizing in its hunt for freedom. It was important to Calvi that it was as vulnerable as it is strong; as beautiful as it is harsh; as much about the hunted as it is about the hunter. But she’s careful not to characterize any of these traits as “masculine” or “feminine” – the whole point is that one person, of any gender, can be both. The power is in the contrast itself; in the way she oscillates between extremes, sounding freer than ever before. She wanted to express herself while being “free from the story that either gender is given, free from worrying how people would judge me on what I want to do with my body & myself. Ivory was one of the first artists to come-out as Non Binary Transgender, and gained respect from radio, television, and international magazines. In 2017 Ivory was among 1800 bands that competed in neXt2Rock. [Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear have garnered international acclaim, and new fans from all over the world. They signed with Glassnote Records and recorded their debut full length album in Nashville with acclaimed producer Jim Abiss. They performed their debut single “Silent Movies” on The Late Show with David Letterman, they’ve toured across the United States, and Europe, more than once. They were featured on CBS Sunday Morning, NBC’s The Today Show, and “Later With Jools Holland and played Bonnaroo, Pilgramage, and the Newport Folk Festival, and the Ryman Theatre, in Nashville. Ruth Ward has continually performed throughout her life, mostly in coffee shops and open mics, for over 30 years, even recording a solo record. In the midst of this she got married and became a mom, and was busy raising a family. Madisen Ward was born in Oklahoma, and grew up in the outskirts of Kansas City, Missouri. He graduated from William Chrisman High School in 2007. Madisen’s journey to become a musician, was “melodically passed down” through the songs of his mother, where Madisen grew up watching his mom perform at local coffee shops. 19. Iron & Wine – “What Hurts Worse”

[This EP collects extra Iron & Wine tracks written for 2017’s Beast Epic release. Samuel “Sam” Ervin Beam was born July 26, 1974. He is better known by his stage and recording name Iron & Wine, is an American singer-songwriter. He has released six studio albums, several EPs and singles, as well as a few download-only releases, which include a live album (a recording of his 2005 Bonnaroo performance). He occasionally tours with a full band. Beam was raised in South Carolina before moving to Virginia and then Florida to attend school. He now resides in Durham, North Carolina.[ The name Iron & Wine is taken from a dietary supplement named “Beef, Iron & Wine” that he found in a general store while shooting a film.]

20. Shiner – “Sleep It Off”
from: Lula Divinia / Castle Face / March 11, 1997 / Reissued by Desoto in 2001
[The group formed in 1992, and quickly found wide exposure, releasing a vinyl EP in 1993 and touring with acts such as Sunny Day Real Estate, Chore, Jawbox, Season to Risk, The Jesus Lizard, and Girls Against Boys. The group released their first LP, Splay (recorded at Steve Albini’s Chicago studio) in 1996, and a second album, Lula Divinia the next year. Sub Pop took notice, and released a 7″ single of the group’s songs “Sleep it Off” and “Half Empty”. Following this the band toured with Hum in 1998. A third full-length, Starless, was released on a label run by members of Descendents, Owned and Operated, in 2000. A fourth LP, The Egg, would follow before the group broke up in 2002. This was recorded and produced at Matt Talbott’s recording studio, Great Western Record Recorders in Tolono IL. Allen Epley is in The Life and Times. Shiner’s 3rd studio album, Starless, from 2000, is now available on vinyl.]

21. Todd Rundgren – “A Dream Goes On Forever”

[The 5th album and 2nd double album was an expansion of Rundgren’s experimentation on his previous album, A Wizard, a True Star. It showed his growing interest in the synthesizer, and its ability to expand the textures of rock music. Much of the album is intensely experimental. However, it is not without its share of pop songs. Todd also tinkers with the synth-heavy progressive sound he would take further with his later band Utopia. First issues of this LP included a large wall poster; all the lyrics appeared on one side, while the other was Todd’s cover portrait in shades of fine print, consisting of the names of 10,000 fans who had sent in the postcard included with A Wizard, a True Star. Todd Harry Rundgren (born June 22, 1948) is an American multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and record producer who has performed a diverse range of styles as a solo artist and as a member of the band Utopia. He is characterized for his sophisticated and often-unorthodox music, flamboyant stage outfits, and his later experiments with interactive entertainment. He also produced innovative music videos, pioneered forms of multimedia, and was an early adopter and promoter of various computer technologies, such as using the Internet as a means of music distribution in the late 1990s. A native of Philadelphia, Rundgren began his professional career in the mid 1960s, forming the psychedelic band Nazz in 1967. Two years later, he left Nazz to pursue a solo career and immediately scored his first US top 40 hit with “We Gotta Get You a Woman” (1970). His best-known songs include “Hello It’s Me” and “I Saw the Light” from Something/Anything? (1972), which have heavy rotation on classic rock radio stations, and the 1983 single “Bang the Drum All Day”, which is featured in many sports arenas, commercials and movie trailers. Although lesser known, “Couldn’t I Just Tell You” (1972) was influential to many artists in the power pop genre. His 1973 album A Wizard, a True Star remains an influence on later generations of “bedroom” musicians. Rundgren organized the first interactive television concert in 1978, designed the first color graphics tablet in 1980, and created the first interactive album, No World Order, in 1994. Additionally, he was one of the first acts to be prominent both as an artist and as a producer. His notable production credits include Badfinger’s Straight Up (1971), Grand Funk Railroad’s We’re an American Band (1973), the New York Dolls’ New York Dolls (1973), Meat Loaf’s Bat Out of Hell (1977) and XTC’s Skylarking (1986).]

[12th studio abum release from American rock band, formed in California in 1995 by singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mark Oliver Everett, known by the stage name E. Band members have changed across the years, both in the studio and on stage, making Everett the only official member for most of the band’s work. Eels’ music is often filled with themes about family, death, and lost love. In 1991, Everett signed a with Polydor and released A Man Called E under the name E. This was followed by Broken Toy Shop in 1993 and marked the beginning of E’s collaboration with drummer Jonathan “Butch” Norton. Eels were officially founded when Butch and E met Tommy Walter. Eels were one of the first to sign with DreamWorks Records, followed by Elliott Smith. In 1996, the band released their breakthrough debut album Beautiful Freak.]

5. Making Movies – “Montána”

[3rd full length release: from KC based 4-piece band and made up of two sets of brothers: Enrique Chi on guitar and lead vocals; Diego Chi on bass & vocals; Juan-Carlos Chaurand on percussion & keyboards; and Andres Chaurand on drums. The band draws their influences from the origins of their families: Santiago, Panama, and Kansas City, Missouri, and Guadalajara, Mexico. Upon th erelease of this album Making Movies kicked off a 22-date Immigrants Are Beautiful Tour, a celebration of solidarity in the face of fear-mongering and hate. Frontman Enrique Chi shared, “It’s time to realize we are all part of this continuum, this beautifully flawed human race that has migrated from every continent to bring us all the beauty we enjoy today.” The band’s social statement is straightforward enough that they can express it in four words: “We Are All Immigrants.” In supporting that cause, a portion of all proceeds from the album and tour go to the National Immigration Law Center. Enrique Chi, describes, “since making the album, the tides have shifted and the underbelly of systematic racism has reared its ugly head. It is no longer time to be silent is time for us to raise our voices.” The quartet has toured with Arcade Fire, Thievery Corporation, Cold War Kids, Los Lobos, Ozomatli, Tennis, Sergio Mendoza of Calexico, Rodrigo y Gabriela, and Hurray for the Riff Raff.]

[Joan As Police Woman, is Joan Wasser, born July 26, 1970), she is an American musician, singer-songwriter and producer. She began her career playing violin with the Dambuilders and played with Black Beetle, Antony and the Johnsons, and Those Bastard Souls. Since 2004 she has released her solo material as Joan As Police Woman. She has released five regular studio albums, one EP, a number of singles and a collection of covers. Throughout her career, she has regularly collaborated with other artists as a writer, performer and arranger. “Tell Me,” is the first single from the new album. Joan Wasser talked about its plea for openness and intimacy, “I am always wanting more intimate dialogue,” she says. “Fear of being vulnerable, future tripping and feelings of shame, paranoia and jealousy get in the way. You got to separate now what’s real, what’s not real – stop using jealousy (not real) as a way to avoid having to clarify and tell me what you really want (real). Why don’t we try trusting each other enough to be fully transparent? What is there to lose?”]

I first Richard Alan Nichols in June of 1986, at the old Unicorn Theatre space at the building that was the Norman School just east of the SW Trafficway. He were directing a short one piece, from a collection of short pieces in the workshop production of playwright Frank Higgins’ “Heartland.” Richard Alan Nichols was wearing a sports watch around his neck, and was directing Laurie Larson in a piece that took place in a shopping mall. It was my favorite piece in the show.

Richard Alan Nichols was born on a farm in Kensington, Connecticut. At 11 years old his father died, and with his mother he moved away from the farm and into the town of Meriden, Connecticut. His Aunt Gertrude helped introduce him to the theatre. When he was 16 he saw Uta Hagen in the play “St. Joan,” by George Bernard Shaw, in a theatre in New Haven.

1953, when he was 18 years old, he found himself studying theatre at Boston University. He writes in his book about how the 1950s were all about emotion, “method” acting. At Boston University he met Olympia Dukakis. At Boston University he also met his wife Joanna.

In 1957 he and Joanna moved to New York City. In April 1958 his son Peter was born. In 1959 he was accepted into the HB Studios to study with Uta Hagen. The HB Studio was run by Uta Hagen and Herbert Berghof. In 1962 Uta Hagen won a Tony Award for her portrayal of Martha in Edward Albee’s play “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”

In 1967 Richard Alan Nichols moved to St. Louis and worked with his wife Joanna teaching Viola Spolin’s Theatre Games and also creating their own performing theatre troupe that even included their 14 year old son.

In 1973 the American Psychiatric Association voted to remove homosexuality from its list of mental disorders. This came as a relief to Alan, who decided to be open about his sexuality and “come out.” Alan had been hiding his sexual orientation all of his life, living in the closet, he now wanted to be honest about his life.

In 1978 Richard Alan Nichols found himself divorced, and tired of working in improvisation. A friend encouraged him to audition for The Missouri Repertory Theatre, now the KC Rep. This is what brought him to Kansas City. In 1980 he met visual artist and set and costume designer Atif Rome who became his life partner.

In 1985 he started Actors-Craft Studio, at first in the Westport Allen Center, then in a space on West 39th street that was being rented by The Unicorn Theatre that is now a parking lot for Missy B’s. Actor’s Craft then moved into a three story house on Warwick, where he not only held multiple classes but also produced several shows including Connections and Incidents, written by Eric Adler, The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me by David Drake, and two original plays he wrote called Land, and Detours with all characters played by students. To Act Is To Do by Richard Alan Nichols, who studied as a scholarship student for five years with Uta Hagen at the HB Studio in New York, is the ultimate guide for both actors and teachers. In six informative and interactive class sessions, Nichols details twenty exercises designed to solve most acting problems that arise while working on plays. Also included are eighteen evaluations of work (scenes, monologues, and Hagen exercises) presented by Nichols’ students, with each evaluation serving as a model for teachers to follow in order to assist actors in learning how to assess their own work in an honest way. This unique exploration—the personal journey of one actor’s lifelong quest to perfect his craft while in pursuit of becoming a player—will help all actors develop the discipline necessary to fine-tune their acting instruments and discover new behaviors in themselves.

Keyboardist and vocalist, Stephanie Bankston was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. She is a graduate of The University of Missouri. She moved abroad in her 20s, and lived in Seoul, Korea, where she played in a mostly female band called BaekMa (“White Horse”). Stephanie returned to Kansas City in the Fall 2015. Brook Worlledge, is 25 years old and is a Kansas City native. She is the band’s drummer and she sings and writes songs for the band. Brook is a defender of the proletariat. Brook’s influences range from Yhe B-52s, The Velvet Underground, and The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Lovergurl guitarist and vocalist, Heather Andrews is also 25. She was born and raised in Rhode Island, and moved to Kansas City in 2011 and fell in love with the city.]

Daisy Buckët aka Spencer Brown joined us to talk about Daisy’s new solo album debut, “Pansy,” to be released this spring. The album of 10 tracks include five tracks recorded with Jeff Freling of Victor & Penny with Erin McGrane and the Loose Change Orchestra. There are also two tracks recorded with the KC psychedelic glam rock band The Philistines, and two original songs written for this album. This past year Daisy has performed with the Sacramento Gay Men’s Chorus, shows in Ohio, Connecticut, and New York at the historic Duplex Cabaret, and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Spencer Brown is a professional actor, singer, spokesmodel, super hero, and has appeared at The Unicorn Theatre, Late Night Theatre, The KC Fringe, Union Station, The Folly Theatre, Off Center Theatre, Just Off Broadway Theatre. Since 2008 Spencer has toured internationally and recorded several albums as a member of the acclaimed The Kinsey Sicks, America’s Favorite Dragapella Beautyshop Quartet. Most recently they were seen on Watch What Happens Live! With Andy Cohen and have been on tour with their critically-acclaimed show, Things You Shouldn’t Say.

[A press release on the Asthmatic Kitty website reported that the Illinois album was supposed to be a double record (with somewhere near 50 songs), but the idea was eventually scrapped. After the success of the album, Stevens returned to his analog 8-track recorder in late 2005 and began the process of finishing 21 of the previously abandoned songs, which would eventually become The Avalanche. Stevens has stated during interviews that although he doesn’t like The Avalanche as much as Illinois, he felt it was important to release the songs in light of the success of his most recent album. He has also said that he decided to release the album in order to buy time until his next “The 50 States” project,” release.]

To say I’ve been inspired by the KC music scene, is an understatement. In just this last year, we’ve played from over 100 local releases of 2017. Marion Merritt is our most frequent contributor to WMM, She grew up in Los Angeles, and St. Louis. She went to college in Columbia, Missouri. She studied art and musical engineering, and is a avid lover of classic films and punk rock music. She saw Talking Heads on their first U.S. tour when they played One Block West, in 1978. For 13 years she has been sharing her musical discoveries and information from her musically-encyclopedic brain on Wednesday MidDay Medley. Marion has joined us for every on-air fund drive to help raise funds for the MidCoast Radio Project. Marion is also the proprietor of Records With Merritt, at 1614 Westport Rd. in Kansas City, Missouri. That features new vinyl releases, weekly in-store performances from young and upcoming bands, and most recenty was the location for a wedding.

When I first met Marion, she walked up to me with a recording in hand and suggested I might like the Philip Glass recordings of the Low Symphony with David Bowie and Brian Eno.

Marion and I really didn’t know each other in the beginning, but throughout these 700 shows we’ve become very close friends, I’ve watched her life transition from corporate retail to owning her own record store in the neighborhood where I live.

For 13 years Marion Merritt haa had a huge influence on our playlists. It was during our first year that she interviewed Regina Spektor.

4. Regina Spektor – “Braile”

[Debut album by singer-songwriter Regina Spektor. It was self-released on CD and sold at Spektor’s early shows. The album is now out of print on CD and much sought-after by collectors, it is available as a download from online music outlets. Regina Spektor was born February 18, 1980, in Moscow (former Soviet Union, now Russia), and began classical training on the piano at the age of six. When she was nine years old, her family left the Soviet Union in 1989, during the period of Perestroika, when Soviet citizens were permitted to emigrate. Regina had to leave her piano behind. The seriousness of her piano studies led her parents to consider not leaving the Soviet Union, but they finally decided to emigrate, due to the racial, ethnic, and political discrimination that Jews faced. Traveling first to Austria and then Italy, the Spektor family was admitted to the United States as refugees with the assistance of HIAS (the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society). They settled in the Bronx, where Spektor graduated from the SAR Academy, a Jewish day middle school in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. Since the family had been unable to bring their piano from Moscow, Spektor practiced on tabletops and other hard surfaces until she found a piano on which to play in the basement of her synagogue. She began to write original songs shortly thereafter. Spektor gradually achieved recognition through performances in the anti-folk scene in downtown New York City, most prominently at the East Village’s SideWalk Cafe. She also performed at local colleges (such as Sarah Lawrence College) with other musicians, including the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players. She sold self-published CDs at her performances during this period: 11:11 (2001) and Songs (2002). After self-releasing her first three records and gaining popularity in New York City’s anti-folk scene, Spektor signed with Sire Records in 2004 and began achieving greater mainstream recognition. After giving her third album, Soviet Kitsch a major label re-release, Sire released her fourth album, Begin to Hope, which would go on to achieve a Gold certification by the RIAA. Her following two albums, Far and What We Saw from the Cheap Seats, each debuted at number 3 on the Billboard 200. Spektor married singer-songwriter Jack Dishel in 2011. Formerly a guitarist with the band the Moldy Peaches, Dishel is a member of the band Only Son and duets with Spektor in the song “Call Them Brothers”. On January 23, 2014, Spektor announced her pregnancy on Facebook. The couple announced the birth of a son in March 2014.]

Since 2014 we have been celebrating the music of Calvin Arsenia who came home to KC after living in Edinburgh, Scotland, and has released his EPs, Moments, Prose, and this year his full length debut, Catastrophe. He has played Folk Alliance International, Kansas City Fringe Fest, The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, The Kauffman Center For The Performing Arts, The Middle of the Map Fest., The Folly Theatre. Calvin is currently in the third month of his Outlyre Tour where he has played San Francisco, Portland, Vancouver, NYC, Boston, Edinburgh, Sweden, Denmark, Holland, Switzerland, Lyon and is currently in Paris where he joins us on the phone.

She has been a regular cast member in our “He Touched Me Gospel Hour” programs, and has contributed original material for almost all of our “A Story In A Song” shows, including our live show at recordBar, and this past Spring, for Big Bang Buffet Black Sheep Rising at The Buffalo Room. Maria is graduate of the Kansas City Art Institute, where she has taught in the Design/Illustration Department, as well as, the Nelson Atkins Museum. Maria is also a founding member of the Latino Writers Collective. Maria is also the host and producer of 90.1 FM’s ARTSPEAK Radio which airs Wednesdays at Noon, following Wednesday Midday Medley. Originally from Anaheim, California, Ron Megee has worked at every theater in Kansas City including The Kansas City Rep, The Coterie Theatre, New Theatre, The Unicorn Theatre, The Folly Theatre. I first met Ron Megee through The Unicorn Theatre. He was running the spotlight for The Rocky Horror Show. We became friends while working together with Lou Jane Temple at Cafe Lulu. This summer Ron starred in the Unicorn Theatre’s production of Priscilla Queen of the Dessert The Musical. Laughter is healing and Ron Megee is a comic genius. He has created one of Kansas City’s most enduring and successful theatre companies, Late Night Theatre that began in 1997, and after a hiatus, was reborn several years ago at Missie B’s, on West 39th Street. In the last 20 years Late Night Theatre has produced over 100 shows, including their most recent one-night-only performance of Valley of The Dolls at the Folly Theatre.

Krystle Warren is originally from Kansas City, Missouri, although she now lives outside of Paris. She learned to play the guitar by listening to The Beatles albums: Rubber Soul and Revolver. Krystle Warren graduated from Paseo Arts Academy in 2001 and began her musical career performing to Kansas City audiences and collaborating with local jazz and pop musicians. After living in San Francisco and New York City, Krystle was signed to a French recording label, Because Music, and moved to Paris and released her album “Circles” in 2009. Krystle played numerous French and British television programs, including Later with Jools Holland, garnering critical acclaim and traveling all over the world, touring with Rufus Wainwright, Nick Cave, Norah Jones, and Joan As Police Woman. Krystle created her own record label, Parlour Door Music, to release her, 2012 record: “Love Songs: A Time you May Embrace” a recording from a 13 day session in Brooklyn, where she recorded 24 songs live with 28 musicians including her band, The Faculty, alongside choirs, horn and string sections. For her most recent release, Krystle decided to go in a new direction, playing every instrument and singing all vocals & back up vocals herself, “playing bass, drums, lap steel, piano, guitar, and vocals directly to analog tape. Three the Hard Way was Produced by Krystle Warren and Ben Kane (D’Angelo, Emily King, PJ Morton).

Three the Hard Way wasn’t supposed to be a political album. It was never my intention to delve into religion, socio-economics, depression…In fact, when Kane first suggested we work together, after I answered defensively that, yes, I had been writing new stuff, long story, and that the songs were all in my head, I said, Let’s make a happy record. And yet, and yet. Heading into the studio a year and a half ago, driving over an hour from my home in Yvelines to Villetaneuse in the early thaw of winter, our recording began as the world’s papers with any common sense at all published a steady stream of, What the FUCK Has The U.S. Done NOW! We couldn’t help but be affected by the uncertainty. It was all around us—still is.

I believe the first session started with “Get a Load”, or at least, attempted to. I had just completed “So We Say” the night before/that very morning, and was eager to lay it. “So We Say” took shape after everyone else went to bed, and I sat alone in the kitchen, plucking away at my guitar, swigging off a bottle of red, thinking about the The Challenger explosion. It was all over the news that day. I was a youngster when it happened, but I remember the image well. The thirtieth anniversary’s coverage provided deeper insight into the whys and hows. I felt disgusted by it all. People rise and fall in pieces, but that’s the price for being free… So began the first tune of the album.

It’s an odd feeling being of the time, artistically—that is to say, one who is reflecting the world around them, by accident, with purpose. Countless quotes exist attributed to various famous folk saying things to the effect of, If you’re not doing this, then you’re doing that, and that’s shitty. I don’t agree with that sentiment as it pertains to artistic expression. Not everyone should hold a megaphone. Pete Seeger, early Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Neil Young—hey, that’s all well and good. The general message is also extremely self-righteous. I don’t like being told what to do, do you?

Likewise, I feel that it’s best to be informed before throwing in your two cents, otherwise, you’re just feeding into the cacophony of yells and screams that currently passes for debate. The world has always been an awful place. Some of us are waking up to that reality now. I couldn’t have written Three the Hard Way five years ago, because I wouldn’t have known what to say, let alone how to say it. I’m here now, taking it all in, and weeping, and writing, and singing, listening, learning, getting through.

We’re thrilled to welcome back to the show, for their 6th appearance on Wednesday MidDay Medley, Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear. Madisen Ward and Ruth Ward were with us for our 500th show, so we feel incredibly blessed to have them back for our 700th show. Between these two shows, they have skyrocketed out of Kansas City, garnering international acclaim, and new fans from all over the world. They signed with Glassnote Records and recorded their debut full length album in Nashville with acclaimed producer Jim Abiss. They performed their debut single “Silent Movies” on The Late Show with David Letterman, they’ve toured across the United States, and Europe, more than once. They were featured on CBS Sunday Morning, NBC’s The Today Show, and “Later With Jools Holland and played Bonnaroo, Pilgramage, and the Newport Folk Festival, and the Ryman Theatre, in Nashville. Ruth Ward has continually performed throughout her life, mostly in coffee shops and open mics, for over 30 years, even recording a solo record. In the midst of this she got married and became a mom, and was busy raising a family. Madisen Ward was born in Oklahoma, and grew up in the outskirts of Kansas City, Missouri. He graduated from William Chrisman High School in 2007. Madisen’s journey to become a musician, was “melodically passed down” through the songs of his mother, where Madisen grew up watching his mom perform at local coffee shops. Eventually he began to learn to play the guitar, and poured his talent for writing into the music to create original songs. They began playing shows together, playing Madisen’s original songs along with the occasional cover of a classic track, reinterpreted in their own incredibly beautiful performance of two voices and two guitars in harmony and orchestration. Their debut album, The Skeleton Crew, was released by Glassnote Records, May 9, 2015 and was our most played record that year and was #1 on our 115 Best Recordings of 2015. Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear are currently working on their 2nd album.

We first played music from Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear on this radio show in early May of 2013 after our mutual friend Joel Nanos of Element Recording sent us a copy of their independent EP, “We Burned The Cane Field” where they first recorded Madisen’s original songs.

When Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear opened for BB King at The Midland, 96.5’s The Buzz’s Lazlo Geiger saw them and he was blown away. He contacted his friend, Daniel Glass, founder of Glassnote Records who traveled to Kansas City to meet the band.

Scott Hobart

Singer-songwriter and guitarist Scott Hobart is a multi-talented artist. Known for his acclaimed honky-tonk country band, Rex Hobart & The Misery Boys (Bloodshot Records). Scott also works as the Coterie Theatre’s Resident Technical Director. He has also composed music and performed in the Coterie’s “Night of The Living Dead.” Scott met his friend Byron Collum at the Kansas City Art Institute in 1989. Eventually, they moved to Collum’s hometown of Green Bay, WI and formed the ‘post-hardcore power-trio’ GIANTS CHAIR in 1993. The band moved back to Kansas City became part of the burgeoning, mid-90’s KC rock scene – sharing bills with Germbox, Season To Risk, Molly McGuire and Shiner. After being signed to Caulfield Records out of Lincoln NE. on the strength of their debut 7″ single, GIANTS CHAIR recorded 2 critically-acclaimed full-length albums and toured the U.S. twice. GIANTS CHAIR sorted ended things in 1997 but have gotten back together here and there.

15. The Velvet Underground – “Heroin”

[The Velvet Underground & Nico is the debut album by The Velvet Underground, with the first professional line-up of the Velvet Underground: Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison and Maureen Tucker. German singer Nico was also featured, having occasionally performed lead vocals for the band. This resulted of the instigation of their mentor and manager, Andy Warhol, and his collaborator, Paul Morrissey. Nico sang lead on three of the album’s tracks—”Femme Fatale”, “All Tomorrow’s Parties” and “I’ll Be Your Mirror”—and back-up on “Sunday Morning”. In 1966, as the album was being recorded, this was also the line-up for their live performances as a part of Warhol’s Exploding Plastic Inevitable. Though the record was a commercial failure upon release and was almost entirely ignored by contemporary critics, The Velvet Underground & Nico is now widely recognized as one of the greatest and most influential albums in the history of popular music. In 1982, musician Brian Eno famously stated that while the album initially only sold approximately 30,000 copies, “everyone who bought one of those 30,000 copies started a band.” In 2003, it ranked 13th on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Clint Hoffmeier is a Kansas City native, He has played in bands since I was 10. Although heavy into film and theater in his 20’s, music has continued to be a big part of his life. In 2008, he opened CODA, with Dan and Ann Tutko, friends he made while working for The Majestic Restaurant. Clint has been involved in many recording projects and his currently writing and performing with the Kansas City based band, The Dynamite Defense.

Matt Tady was born in Wyandotte County, but grew up in Southeast Kansas. After landing in Kansas City, he met his wife Danielle Meister in 2004. Matt has collaborated as an actor and dancer on perfomance installation pieces for the Charlotte Street Foundation, and has worked hanging art in galleries and bars in the Crossroads. Matt has also been a part of the astro-conspiracy rock band, The Cosmic Tady Brothers with his brother Chris. He is also the owner of Tadej Leather Goods with his wife Danielle Meister, who is the owner of We Are Sincerely Yours, at 2711 Troost Avenue, in Kansas City.

Clint has written about how Wednesday Night Drinking Practice is an old tradition. Many of his close friends and brothers have met every Wednesday in his garage to have drinks and talk about movies and music and such. The idea to do a weekly podcast with the same concept came to him last year. Clint asked Matt to join him on this project. What was once just an idea, has turned into an amazing experience in which he gets to hang out and get to know local Kansas City musicians and artists.

8. Second Hand King – “Go So Wrong”

[Second Hand King is Joe Stanziola, who grew up in Shawnee Kansas, and Overland Park, Kansas, where he graduated from Shawnee Mission East High School in 2008. He calls his music Doo Wop / Hip Hop. He is a student of Hip Hop with a passion for Doo Wop music, and he takes his name from a 1966 Doo Wop song known as “The Joker went Wild” by Brian Hyland. Second Hand King released his debut EP, The Santa Sangre, in December 2011, followed by the full length albums: All My Fears (December, 2012), Lower Depths (October, 2013), Chuck (March 2014), Before the Bomb Drops (May, 2015), and Almost Blue (January, 2016). 9. Modern English- “Moonbeam”

[8th studio album from 5-piece band formed in Colchester, Essex, England, in 1979 by Robbie Grey on vocals, Gary McDowell on guitar & vocals, and Michael Conroy on bass & vocals. Modern English were originally known as The Lepers. The group expanded to “Modern English” when Richard Brown on drums and Stephen Walker on keyboards were subsequently added to the lineup of the band. Modern English are a new wave/post-punk band from Colchester, Essex, England best remembered for their songs “I Melt with You”, “Hands Across the Sea”, and “Ink and Paper”. The group disbanded twice, in 1987 and 1991, but reunited again in 1989 and 1995. This new album was recorded, produced and mixed by Martyn Young from Colourbox and MARRS, who also adds additional keyboards.]

10. Sky Smeed – “Lunker Bass”

[Sky Smeed was born and raised outside of Chanute, Kansas, in an old, one-room schoolhouse his parents bought and turned into a home in the early 1970s. Last year, he sold the country home he built by hand and migrated to Lawrence, Kansas, a place that has provided a non-stop supply of creativity, community and culture, and began settling in to an old fixer-upper on the north side of the Kaw River. To date, Smeed has self-released five full-length albums: Flying High (2002), The Front Steps (2004), Mill River (2006), Sky Smeed (2012) and Drive All Night (2015). His sixth album, Lunker Bass (2017), was recorded and produced at The Ninth Ward Pickin’ Parlor in Lawrence by none other than award-winning folk duo Truckstop Honeymoon (Mike & Katie West).]

11. Pieta Brown – “Street Tracker”

[Pieta Brown’s new release Postcards features her collaborating with musical friends, including Calexico, Bon Iver, Mark Knopfler and the Pines. She compiled the album by writing simple acoustic demos of what would become the album’s songs, sending them to the musicians that make up Postcards‘ roster of guests, and having those artists finish the tracks. Brown and her collaborators never worked in the same room, which lent the album its distance-implying title. Street Tracker was created with Mark Knopfler. Brown was born in 1973, in Iowa City, Iowa. She is an American musician and singer-songwriter who has released five albums and three EPs. She has performed with artists such as Mark Knopfler, John Prine, Amos Lee, Justin Vernon and Calexico. Her early upbringing was in Iowa. There, Brown was exposed to traditional and rural folk music through her father, singer songwriter Greg Brown. Brown spent her childhood living in 17 different residences between Iowa and Alabama. While living with her mother in Alabama, Brown began writing poetry and composing instrumental songs on piano. Pieta Brown is married to musician and producer Bo Ramsey.]

Matthew Dunehoo, serves as Festival Director of the First Friday Film Festival, at Musical Theater Heritage in Crown Center on April 7, with eleven short films from Barcelona, Minneapolis, Columbia, NYC, Los Angeles, France, Sweden, and Michigan that will be screened. Matt is also a film maker, musician and actor. Matt is the founder of Elk’s Pride Pictures, a film production company based in Kansas City, Missouri. Matt has also been at the center of many of our favorite and often played bands on this show, including Tidy Hippy, Loose Park, Baby Teardrops, and Doris Hensen. Lou Jane Temple is a chef and author. During her final year of college and for several years after, she ran all of the back stage catering for the leading rock and roll producer in the midwest. This led to her own catering company doing events for the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, and eventually her own restaurant, Cafe Lulu which opened in 1989. Since 1992 she has served as a marketing and restaurant and wine consultant, she has worked as a private chef on an island, off the coast of Maine. She became a columnist for the Kansas City Star. She wrote seven semi-autobiographical culinary mysteries in her own Heaven Lee Series, through St. Martin’s Press, and then two more in a new Spice Box Series with Berkley Press. She also co-authored The Big Platter Cookbook. Through all of this Lou Jane has worked extensively in film, theatre, retail, marketing, and radio. Originally from Anaheim, California, Ron Megee has worked at every theater in Kansas City including The Kansas City Rep, The Coterie Theatre, New Theatre, The Unicorn Theatre. I first met Ron Megee through The Unicorn Theatre. He was running the spotlight for The Rocky Horror Show. We became friends while working together with Lou Jane Temple at Cafe Lulu. Laughter is healing and Ron Megee is a comic genius. He has created one of Kansas City’s most enduring and successful theatre companies, Late Night Theatre that began in 1997, and after a hiatus, was reborn several years ago at Missie B’s, on West 39th Street. Cafe Lulu is where I had originally met Lou Jane Temple when I worked on a show at The Unicorn where she catered the opening night of Expiring Minds – Six Women with Brain Death and where she designed special food props for Kiss of The Spider Woman.

It all started at Cafe Lulu, a restaurant started by Lou Jane Temple on West 39th Street that opened on my 26th birthday, on a Tuesday, June 5, 1989. The restaurant was packed, people waited for hours, champagne was ordered for the entire room, Lou Jane’s friends from the Art Institute, her catering company, her work in film, her connections to Westport, Kansas, music, and art, were all waiting to eat her food. Lou Jane was my art mother. Between her and myself, and Ron Megee we created a Monday night, weekly, curated, live variety show of writers, theatre people, musicians, bands, performance artists, puppeteers, storytellers, who shared the tiny stage at the center of this one of a kind place.

Several of the weekly contributors were using the show as an opportunity to try out new material before a live and willing audience. Before long, scenes and material led to full-length works, and projects to be produced outside Cafe Lulu. For these performances we needed an identity. Mark Manning, Janice Woolery, and Ron Megee, founded Big Bang Buffet as an effort to provide venue for original, difficult pieces, controversial material.

Ron and Lou Jane talked about Ron’s first musical, produced as part of Big Bang Buffet’s first season of shows, in the Spring of 1992, Nasty Sally Searsucker was produced in Lou Jane’s Columbus Park Loft and featured a Cafe Lulu bartender who also was an talented electric guitar player named, Jimmy McCallister, who created a lot of the music with Scott Seitz for the show.
