4. Calvin Arsenia – “Experience”
from: Catastrophe / Calvin Arsenia / February 14, 2017
[Calvin Arsenia premiered these songs in a live show at recordBar in November 2016 in a stage show that involved a company of 50 people, dancers, stilt walkers, special lighting, back up singers, guest artists. Born in Orlando, Florida, Calvin’s creative journey really began when he moved to the KC suburb of Olathe, teaching himself the guitar, and eventually the harp. He learned his signature instrument at the age of 20 after he couldn’t find a harpist as determined as him to meld folk, rock, classical, rap and R&B into the irresistible fusion which has become his calling card in the Kansas City music scene and beyond. His passion for stretching the boundaries of musical expression saw him transform a trip to Edinburgh, Scotland’s Fringe Festival early in his career into a life-changing music mission, with an Edinburgh church offering him a role as musical liaison between the church and the city that would change his life. Two years and 300 shows later, Calvin returned to Kansas City reborn as a humanistic songwriter/performer whose impassioned and conceptual stage shows (regularly sold-out in Kansas City, currently catching fire on the West Coast with a diverse following across Europe), are collaborative, costumed-culture-bridging spectacles which In KC Magazine has hailed as ‘equal parts opera, symphony, musical theatre, rock show, all built around its creator: a charismatic 6-foot-6-inch harpist with a natural stage command and knack for gilding gold and painting lilies.’ Since Calvin Arsenia came home to KC after living in Edinburgh, Scotland, he has released his EP, Moments, in 2014, and his EP Prose in 2015, and his Folk Alliance exclusive EP Catastrophe in 2016. His full length album Catastrophe on February 14, 2017, His EP Caviar in Novenber 2017. Calvin’s 2018 national debut, Cantaloupe, was released on September 15, 2018 on Center Cut Records. On June 28, 2019 Calvin released Honeydew, an EP including a remix of three songs from Cantaloupe. On September 20, 2019 Calvin released LA Sessions. On December 13, 2019 Calvin released his full length Christmas album “all is calm.” Calvin is also a graduate of Artist INC. Since 2014 we have been celebrating the music of Calvin Arsenia. He has played Folk Alliance International, Kansas City Fringe Fest, The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, The Kauffman Center For The Performing Arts, The Middle of the Map Fest., The Folly Theatre. ]

5. The Get Up Kids – “Lou Barlow”
from: Problems / Polyvinyl Record Co / May 10, 2019
[KC / Lawrence KS based band with Matt Pryor on vocals & guitars, Jim Suptic on guitar, Rob Pope on bass, James Dewees on keyboards, Ryan Pope on drums. Formed in 1995, the band was a major player in the mid-1990s emo scene, otherwise known as the “second wave” of emo music. As they gained prominence, they began touring with bands such as Green Day and Weezer before becoming headliners themselves, eventually embarking on international tours of Japan and Europe. The Get Up Kids Members Rob Pope is also in the band Spoon; Jim Suptic is in the bands: Blackpool Lights, and Radar State; James Dewees is in the band Reggie and the Full Effect; and Matt Pryor performs often as a solo artists, and in the bands: Radar State, and The New Amsterdams. On their new album Problems—their first full-length in eight years—The Get Up Kids examine everything from life-changing loss to loneliness to the inevitable anxiety of existing in 2019. But by sustaining the essence of their sound—anthemic choruses with sing-along-ready melodies—the band highlights those troubles as a shared experience, giving way to an unbreakable solidarity. And at the heart of Problems is an invaluable element the band’s embodied since their 1997 debut Four Minute Mile: a penetrating lyricism that’s both acutely introspective and indelibly resonant. // The follow-up to 2018’s Kicker EP, Problems came to life in Bridgeport, Connecticut, with the band holing up together for a three-week span. Working with Grammy Award-winning producer Peter Katis, The Get Up Kids took a characteristically riff-driven yet decidedly pop-minded approach to song structure, while also allowing themselves a new sense of creative freedom. “At one point with this band, if we came up with something that felt too much like when we first started out, we would’ve said, ‘No, we can’t do that anymore,’” says Pryor. “These days we’ve learned how to write without roadblocking the ideas that come naturally to us.” // Kicking off with lead single “Satellite,” Problems opens on a stark arrangement of acoustic guitar and stripped-bare vocals, then bursts into brightly crashing rhythms and lyrics revealing the time-bending quality of The Get Up Kids’ songwriting. “I started writing ‘Satellite’ about my son who’s 14 and a total introvert—not antisocial, he just genuinely likes to keep to himself,” says Pryor. “But then somewhere down the line I started singing about myself—about how even when you’re playing a show to a room full of people, I can still feel anxious and isolated.” // Throughout Problems, The Get Up Kids again prove themselves attuned to the nuance of highly specific emotions, and ultimately validate the messiest and most nebulous of feelings. On the joyfully swinging, piano-heavy “The Problem Is Me,” for instance, the band explores the notion of embracing your own romantic dysfunction, while “Salina” captures a small moment of melancholy with sweeping intensity and sprawling guitar work. Later, on “Your Ghost Is Gone,” The Get Up Kids deliver a gently devastating piano ballad sparked from an instrumental piece Dewees wrote soon after his mother’s death. // Through the years, The Get Up Kids have purposely pushed themselves toward previously unexplored songwriting material. “I’m 41 now, I could never write a song like when I was 19—all those ‘I miss my girlfriend’ kind of songs,” Suptic says. “It’s always important to us to write about wherever we are right now.” As shown on Problems, the resulting output both preserves the beloved spirit of The Get Up Kids and creates an entirely new context for their music. “A big part of the reason why we started writing new songs in the first place is that we have things we want to say about this moment in time,” says Pryor. “We’re still so connected to our past and where this all came from—it’s definitely a celebration of the fact that we still get to do this.” ]

8. Quiet Takes – “Wanted (The Dirty Windshield Version)”
from: “Wanted (Dirty Windshield Version)” – Single / Sarah Magill / May 1, 2020
[“Wanted” lives in the ellipses between acknowledging you want something you can’t have…and letting that desire go. The plan was to put this stripped-down version out in the fall after releasing its more produced twin on an EP this summer, but then everything changed. Beyond the pandemic’s catastrophic casualties, we are all grappling with lesser losses: plans, jobs, dreams, relationships, routines, shows, savings, physical touch. It seemed right to put this version out now. Sometimes we only realize what we want when it’s absent. That’s the gift in the grief, but it stings, doesn’t it? Music & Lyrics by Sarah Magill. Produced by David Bennett. Vocals & keyboards by Sarah Magill, guitars, & bass by David Bennett. Additional key by Ian Thompson. 10. Betty Davis – “They Say I’m Different”
from: They Say I’m Different / Just Sunshine / 1974 [2007 re-release Light in The Attic]
[The second studio album by Betty Davis. The Wire (magazine) placed They Say I’m Different in their list of “100 Records That Set the World on Fire (While No One Was Listening).” Betty Davis was born July 26, 1945. She is an American funk and soul singer. She is a performer who was known for her memorable and noteworthy live performances. Born in 1945 according to most sources (though she claims 1944), Betty Mabry grew up in Durham, North Carolina, and just outside Pittsboro. On her grandmother’s farm in Reidsville, North Carolina, she listened to B.B. King, Jimmy Reed, and Elmore James and other blues musicians. One of the first songs she wrote, at the age of 12, was called “I’m Going to Bake That Cake of Love.” Also at that age, her family moved to Pittsburgh. Aged 16, Betty left Pittsburgh for New York City, enrolling at the Fashion Institute of Technology while living with her aunt. She soaked up the Greenwich Village culture and folk music of the early 1960s. She associated herself with frequenters of the Cellar, a hip uptown club where young and stylish people congregated. It was a multiracial, artsy crowd of models, design students, actors, and singers. At the Cellar she played records and chatted people up. She also worked as a model, appearing in photo spreads in Seventeen, Ebony and Glamour. In her time in New York, she met several musicians including Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone. The seeds of her musical career were planted through her friendship with soul singer Lou Courtney, who produced her first single, “The Cellar” with simple, catchy lyrics like, “Where you going fellas, so fly? / I’m going to the Cellar, my oh my / What you going to do there / We’re going to boogaloo there.” The single was a local jam for the Cellar. Yet her first professional gig was not until she wrote “Uptown (to Harlem)” for the Chambers Brothers. Their 1967 album was a major success, but Betty Mabry was focusing on her modeling career. She was successful as a model but felt bored by the work. According to Oliver Wang’s They Say I’m Different liner notes, she said, “I didn’t like modeling because you didn’t need brains to do it. It’s only going to last as long as you look good.” In 2017, a documentary was released entitled Betty: They Say I’m Different. As a model in 1966, Betty first met jazz musician Miles Davis who was 19 years her senior at a concert. At the time he was separated from his first wife, dancer Frances Davis, and he was dating actress Cicely Tyson. Betty began dating Miles in early 1968, and they were married in September 1968. In just one year of marriage, she influenced him greatly by introducing him to the fashions and the new popular music trends of the era. In his autobiography, Miles credited Betty with helping to plant the seeds of his future musical explorations by introducing the trumpeter to psychedelic rock guitarist Jimi Hendrix and funk innovator Sly Stone. The Miles Davis album Filles de Kilimanjaro (1968) includes a song named after her and her photo on the front cover. In his autobiography, Miles said Betty was “too young and wild,” and accused her of having an affair with Jimi Hendrix, which hastened the end of their marriage. Betty denied the affair stating, “I was so angry with Miles when he wrote that. It was disrespectful to Jimi and to me. Miles and I broke up because of his violent temper.” After accusing her of adultery, he filed for divorce in 1969. Miles told Jet magazine at the time that the divorce was obtained on a “temperament” charge. He added, “I’m just not the kind of cat to be married.” Hendrix and Miles remained close, planning to record, until Hendrix’s death. The influence of Hendrix and especially Sly Stone on Miles Davis was obvious on the album Bitches Brew (1970), which ushered in the era of jazz fusion. The origin of the album’s title is unknown, but some believe Miles was subtly paying tribute to Betty and her girlfriends. In fact, it is said that he originally wanted to call the album Witches Brew—it was Betty who convinced him to change it. Davis briefly dated musician Eric Clapton; she refused to collaborate with him. In 1975, Davis’ lover Robert Palmer helped her facilitate a deal with Island Records. She released her album Nasty Gal shortly after.]

In 2017 Victor & Penny got married.

On Daisy Buckët/Spencer Brown’s 2018 debut record “Pansy” Jeff Freling not only oversaw making half of the album’s songs happen, {“Stars are Blind,” “Long, Long Time,” “What Makes a Man,” “I’ll Be With You in Apple Blossom Time,” “Hot Nuts”) but was also integral in the mixing process and lending his extra ears. Song credits include V&P band members: Jeff Freling on guitar; Brian Steever on drums; Rick Willoughby on bass; Ken Lovern on organ; James Isaac on tenor saxophone, and Erin McGrand on ukulele and background vocals.

Electricity is the culmination of 160,000 miles, 5 years and nearly 1,000 performances and is a testament to the incomparable vivacity of Victor & Penny’s live show, with newly added sophistication and rich instrumentation.

“Electricity” was Produced by Grammy Award winning Producer/Engineer Mitch Dane, and recorded at Sputnik Sound in Nashville, TN.

Electricity features Victor and Penny’s find band, The Loose Change Orchestra (LCO). The LCO’s rich, resonate sound is created by virtuoso reeds player James Isaac on clarinet, soprano saxophone, and melodica; Rick Willoughby on upright bass; and trombonist Kyle Dahlquist. Supplemental instrumentation includes accordion, violin, saw, mandolin, piano, and Hammond B3.

Sid Sowder and Brandon Phillips on the April 3, 2019 edition of Wednesday MidDay Medley on KKFI 90.1 FM

11:00 – Interview with Brandon Phillips and Sid Sowder

Brandon, Zach, & Adam Phillips come from an artistic family. Their father was a jazz musician, playwright, and actor and their mother an art teacher. The brothers started by playing AC/DC covers, but moved on to original songs and a broader range of influences. In 1991 they formed their first band and a 14-year-old Brandon led his younger brothers Zach & Adam into a seedy bar in KC to play their first gig to the small crowd of locals. In 1997 the brother’s a ska and rock & roll band, The Gadjits, released their debut album, Da Gravy on Yo’ Grits, on their own JoCo Ska label. They went on record five full length albums on Hellcat Records, Thick Records and an unreleased album for RCA Records. They appeared on The Vans Warped Tour, and supported the Skatallites, Rancid, and Let’s Go Bowling on the road.

In 2004 The Gadjits ended and the brothers formed a new band called The Architects who have released six full length albums and two EPs, including The Border Wars graphic novel/EP series, on which they worked with illustrator Mallory Dorn.

In the past three years the brothers have branched of into multiple musical and recording projects including Other Americans with Julie Berndsen (formerly of the Latenight Callers) on lead vocals, Radar State where Adam plays drums, and Brandon Phillips and The Condition with Brandon on vocals, Adam on drums, Zach on bass, former Gadjit member Ehren Starks on keyboard, Rachel Mallin (of Rachel Mallin & the Wild Type) on guitar, and Julie Berndsen on backup vocals. This ensemble changes based on availability of all involved.

Kansas City, Missouri bubblegum-soul champions Brandon Phillips and The Condition emerge from a long winters hibernation with a platinum –wrapped pouch of big league power pop that swings for the fences.

Brandon Phillips and The Condition “People Talk” Too Much Rock Single Series 009

On the A-side, “People Talk”– Brandon Phillips and the Condition simply do what they do with understated flex. Take a melody reminiscent of a sixties girl-group, bolt it to a boppy, eighties backbeat and then get to hanging all the accouterments and accessories of power-pop-soul on it like aftermarket chrome on a Lambretta scooter.

The B-side of this vinyl-only, limited-run record is a hand selected cover of Tommy Tutone’s “Angel Say No”– as near a perfect power-pop deep-cut as one is likely to find in even the dustiest record bin in it’s original version, here re-amplified by a crack rhythm section and wedded to the Ronettes-worshiping vocal style for which BP+C are known.

On April 3, 2018, Sasami shared her first solo track “Callous” on SoundCloud, which Pitchfork awarded with their “Best New Track” label. On October 9, Domino Recording Company announced that Sasami had signed to their label, and officially released “Callous” alongside a new song titled “Not the Time”, premiered by The Fader, who called Sasami “rock’s next big thing.” Sasami stated, “I wrote both of these songs on tour on a guitar on my iPad with GarageBand plugins and Moog 15 app sounds and then re-recorded them in the studio onto tape with really great tones. So it’s kind of like emotionally scribbling a letter on a tear and snot-stained napkin and then re-writing it on fancy papyrus paper to make it look like you have your shit together.”[4] The songs were released on a 7” vinyl on October 26. Throughout 2018, Sasami toured with various musicians, including Baths, No Joy, King Tuff, Mitski, Soccer Mommy, Snail Mail and Menace Beach.]

In January 2017, Le Bon released the four-track EP Rock Pool via Drag City. 7. Celeste & Gotts Street Park – “Lately”
from: Lately – EP / Both Sides Records – Polydor Records / March 22, 2019
[Celeste Waite is 24. She was born in Los Angeles, California. She left L.A. when she was three years old. With her my mother she moved to an area just on the outskirts of London, and then to Brighton when she was five years old. Brighton is an hour away from London on the train. Celeste told Interview Magazine in 2017, “It’s funny, because it’s such a good place to grow up when you’re a teenager because it is quite safe, really, so you can do all of that underage clubbing and go out when you’re 16. But by the time you get to 20, or even 18, you want more. It feels like quite a small place once you’ve lived here for a while, but the good thing about it is I’ve always felt free to just create and do what I want. There’s not real pressure to fit in and be something that you’re not. It’s always that you could do what you wanted to, in a good way.” She went on to say,”I think I really want to move to London, mainly because now I want to spend time in the studio more and I have, over the last few years, been traveling back and forth to London. I’ve made groups of friends there, so it feels like the natural thing to want to be there. But I think Brighton is always a place that I’ll come back to because it does feel really nice sometimes; when you’ve been feeling shitty then you come back and you can be near the ocean. There’s not a time of day where everyone’s rushing around because it’s not that kind of place.]

15. Miya Folick – “Thingamajig”
from: Premonitions / A Terrible Records – Interscope Release / October 26, 2018
[Los Angeles based musical artist writes: “Premonitions begins with “Thingamajig” — something you can’t quite recall the name of, but you know exactly what it means and what it feels like. Like the pull of desire that comes with not quite remembering fully. The magnetism of something just on the tip of your tongue. I wanted the album to feel like that thing. // I think a lot about about memory-making as an act of creation, the words we use to describe a memory give shape to and sometimes mutate the memory itself. I believe that the way we choose to describe the events of our lives is not only a means of creative fulfillment, but an absolutely vital part of creating the world we want to live in. When we are dishonest in the present, we create a dishonest future. When we are honest in the present, we create a more honest future. I wanted this album to be the vehicle for a hopeful, truthful, generous, and loving world. I tried not to posture or pretend. I wrote about my life as I’ve seen it and how I’d like to see it, as both memory and premonition. // The producers, Justin Raisen and Yves Rothman, and I spent months collecting organic sounds to fill the world of this record. We threw away everything that felt false and tried to keep the soul of each song alive. I hope Premonitions gives you comfort and joy. I hope it feels like all the mysterious details of your lives, all your massive and mundane glories. I hope it reminds you that there is beauty in the details. Rainbows in your sprinklers. Drinking water from a hose. The way it felt to make a friend for the first time. Locking yourself in a bathroom to avoid everyone. Dancing until your shins burn. Leaving your phone in an Uber and making your best friend drive you an hour away to knock on a stranger’s door after locating it on Find My Phone. Losing a friend. Losing yourself. Remembering.”]

16. Hop Along – “How Simple”
from: Bark Your Head Off, Dog / Saddle Creek / April 6, 2019
[Written over the course of 2016 and 2017 and recorded in the summer of the latter year by Frances Quinlan (songwriter/vocalist/rhythm guitar), Tyler Long (bass), Joe Reinhart (guitar), and Mark Quinlan (drums), Bark Your Head Off, Dog addresses disappointment, particularly in man’s misuse of power, and relates accounts from the periphery — one’s attempts to retreat from the lengthening shadows of tyrants, both historical and everyday. It considers what it’s like to cast off longheld and misguided perceptions, yet without the assurance of knowing what new ones will replace them. Much like on Hop Along’s first and second records, Get Disowned and Painted Shut, Quinlan seeks in real time to work through these issues. // Throughout the album, one gets the sense that Quinlan is wandering in the thicket of a forest—a state of being that will feel familiar to longtime listeners—and on this outing, she hasn’t left a trail of breadcrumbs behind her. The album’s artwork, which Quinlan painted herself, invites the listener into that forest, as well. “There is a terror in getting lost,” she says, “the woods are at the same time beautiful and horrifying.” This curious wandering gives the album, both lyrically and musically, a heightened dimensionality. // Bark Your Head Off, Dog is, without question, Hop Along’s most dynamic and textured record yet. Self-produced and recorded at The Headroom in Philadelphia by Reinhart and Kyle Pulley, Bark Your Head Off, Dog features the familiar sounds that have always made the band allergic to genre: grunge, folk, punk, and power pop all appear, with inspiration from ELO to Elvis Costello to ‘70s girl group vocal arrangements. This time around, they’ve added strings, more intricate rhythms, lush harmonies (featuring Thin Lips’ Chrissy Tashjian), along with a momentary visit with a vocoder. In more than one place, Mark Quinlan drums like he’s at a disco with Built to Spill. // Most significantly, Bark Your Head Off, Dog shows the band at its strongest and most cohesive. Hop Along (which originally began as Quinlan’s solo project under the moniker Hop Along, Queen Ansleis) has never sounded so deliberate, so balanced. “So strange to be shaped by such strange men” is a line that repeats on more than one song on the album. “I’ve been thinking about that a lot. That I just deferred to men throughout my life,” Quinlan says. “But by thinking you’re powerless, you’re really robbing yourself. I’m at a point in my life where I’m saying instead, ‘Well, what can I do?’” // Produced by Joe Reinhart and Hop Along // Written by Frances Quinlan and Hop Along (ASCAP) // Engineered by Kyle Pulley and Joe Reinhart at The Headroom in Philadelphia with Assistants Pat Quigley Ethan Farmer Ben Weiss // Mixed and Mastered by Ryan Schwabe .]

The group, started with members from all over the world including The United States, Japan, South Korea, London, Australia, and New Zealand, makes original internet-age electronically-tinged indie pop music. Bandmembers Harry, Emily, Ruby, B, Tucan, Soul, and Robert were all longtime friends who decided it was finally time to work together. Harry and Emily met Orono during one of their old band’s Japan shows (she attended as a fan), and they struck up a Facebook friendship with their future bandmate. After discovering she could sing, they invited her to add lyrics and vocals to a demo they’d been working on for a new project at the beginning of 2017.]

He founded The Actor’s-Craft Studio in 1987 where he has been teaching multiple acting classes for over 30 years. Richard Alan Nichols, studied as a scholarship student for five years with Uta Hagen at the HB Studio in New York. He has just released a new book, To Act Is To Do, (39 West Press) a guide for both actors and teachers. Richard Alan Nichols will read selections from his new book, To Act Is To Do, at a special Book Release & Reception, Sunday, March 18, at 4:00 pm, at Just Off Broadway Theatre, 3051 Penn Valley Dr., KCMO.

Richard Alan Nichols, thanks for being with us on Wednesday MidDay Medley

I first Richard Alan Nichols in June of 1986, at the old Unicorn Theatre space at the building that was the Norman School just east of the SW Trafficway. He were directing a short one piece, from a collection of short pieces in the workshop production of playwright Frank Higgins’ “Heartland.” Richard Alan Nichols was wearing a sports watch around his neck, and was directing Laurie Larson in a piece that took place in a shopping mall. It was my favorite piece in the show.

Richard Alan Nichols was born on a farm in Kensington, Connecticut. At 11 years old his father died, and with his mother he moved away from the farm and into the town of Meriden, Connecticut. His Aunt Gertrude helped introduce him to the theatre. When he was 16 he saw Uta Hagen in the play “St. Joan,” by George Bernard Shaw, in a theatre in New Haven.

1953, when he was 18 years old, he found himself studying theatre at Boston University. He writes in his book about how the 1950s were all about emotion, “method” acting. At Boston University he met Olympia Dukakis. At Boston University he also met his wife Joanna.

In 1957 he and Joanna moved to New York City. In April 1958 his son Peter was born. In 1959 he was accepted into the HB Studios to study with Uta Hagen. The HB Studio was run by Uta Hagen and Herbert Berghof. In 1962 Uta Hagen won a Tony Award for her portrayal of Martha in Edward Albee’s play “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”

In 1967 Richard Alan Nichols moved to St. Louis and worked with his wife Joanna teaching Viola Spolin’s Theatre Games and also creating their own performing theatre troupe that even included their 14 year old son.

In 1973 the American Psychiatric Association voted to remove homosexuality from its list of mental disorders. This came as a relief to Alan, who decided to be open about his sexuality and “come out.” Alan had been hiding his sexual orientation all of his life, living in the closet, he now wanted to be honest about his life.

In 1978 Richard Alan Nichols found himself divorced, and tired of working in improvisation. A friend encouraged him to audition for The Missouri Repertory Theatre, now the KC Rep. This is what brought him to Kansas City. In 1980 he met visual artist and set and costume designer Atif Rome who became his life partner.

In 1985 he started Actors-Craft Studio, at first in the Westport Allen Center, then in a space on West 39th street that was being rented by The Unicorn Theatre that is now a parking lot for Missy B’s. Actor’s Craft then moved into a three story house on Warwick, where he not only held multiple classes but also produced several shows including Connections and Incidents, written by Eric Adler, The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me by David Drake, and two original plays he wrote called Land, and Detours with all characters played by students. In 2001 Actors Craft reopened in South Hyde Park. More info at: http://www.actorscraftstudio.com

Richard Alan Nichols is a professional actor, director, and teacher. Some acting credits include: The View From The Bridge, Qed, The Giver, Tuesdays With Morrie, Proof, Rainmaker, Small Craft Warnings, Slight Defect, A Desert Holiday, Light:Damage, Over The River And Through The Woods, Prelude To A Kiss, Desert Holiday, An American Daughter, Keely and Du, The Sum Of Us, A Walk In The Woods, Frankie & Johnny In The Clair De Lune, The Normal Heart, Breaking The Code, A Christmas Carol. Directing credits include: Spring Awakening, The Glass Menagerie, All My Sons, Ti Jean Blues, Excerpts, Al Dente, Kissing Marianne, Three X Romulus Linney, There Are More Things…, Eight Easy Pieces, Rocks Can Float, The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me, Potluck, Land, On The Verge, Reckless, Connections, and Incidents. Richard Alan Nichols understudied at The New Theatre for Joel Rooks in Say Goodnight Gracie; Jack Kllugman in Aspirin & Elephants; Gary Burghoff in Marvin and Mel; and Paul Michael in Over the River and Through the Woods.

To Act Is To Do by Richard Alan Nichols, who studied as a scholarship student for five years with Uta Hagen at the HB Studio in New York, is the ultimate guide for both actors and teachers. In six informative and interactive class sessions, Nichols details twenty exercises designed to solve most acting problems that arise while working on plays. Also included are eighteen evaluations of work (scenes, monologues, and Hagen exercises) presented by Nichols’ students, with each evaluation serving as a model for teachers to follow in order to assist actors in learning how to assess their own work in an honest way. This unique exploration—the personal journey of one actor’s lifelong quest to perfect his craft while in pursuit of becoming a player—will help all actors develop the discipline necessary to fine-tune their acting instruments and discover new behaviors in themselves.

Richard Alan Nichols will read selections from his new book, To Act Is To Do, at a special Book Release & Reception, Sunday, March 18, at 4:00 pm, at Just Off Broadway Theatre, 3051 Penn Valley Dr., KCMO. http://www.justoffbroadway.org, http://www.actorscraftstudio.com, http://www.39westpress.com

“Stars Are Blind” a song written for Paris Hilton that she released in 2004

Spencer writes: “As the title of the album suggests, this is a very gay record and I couldn’t be prouder of that. The songs that found their way to me knew they belonged and deserved to be included in this collection of unapologetically gay gems. 2. AHI – “Alive Again”
from: We Made It Through the Wreckage / Ahkinoah H Izarh / January 20, 2017
[Debut album from Brampton, Ontario, Canada indie-soul/alt-folk songwriter AHI (pronounced “eye”). From humble beginnings in Brampton, Ontario, AHI independently toured over 100,000 miles, through the vast woodlands of Canada and the neon lights of Nashville, to the Guggenheim Museum in New York, and eventually beyond the Atlantic to the brick lanes of London. Along the way, he has recorded with leading acoustic sessions across the UK and Europe, but none has been more viewed than a simple home video of his stunning rendition of Bob Marley’s ‘No Woman No Cry’, filmed in a London alleyway and accompanied by the sweet harmonies of his three-year-old daughter. The video caught the attention of the Marley family who featured it on the official BobMarley.com website and sent AHI a personalized note from Mrs. Rita Marley herself – an unparalleled experience for an artist who cites Bob Marley as his greatest musical inspiration. Soon after, AHI returned to find his Indie Soul EP (2014) was chosen one of CBC Radio One’s top 10 records of the year, and he has since been recognized and awarded by Folk Alliance International, Nashville Songwriters Association International, the Songwriters Association of Canada, and the Canada Council for the Arts, among others. For his debut full-length We Made It Through The Wreckage (2017), AHI has collaborated with CMA winning producer Eric Masse (Miranda Lambert) to create what Masse has called an entirely “new genre”, blending folk, soul and rock, and topping it off with a vocal performance to be expected from a seasoned powerhouse rather than an indie debut..]

[AHI plays an Official Showcase at Folk Alliance International Conference, Friday, February 16, at 6:00 pm, in Shawnee Mission Room, at Weston Crown Center.]

3. Ruthie Foster – “What Are You Listening To?”
from: Joy Comes Back / Stone Truth Music – Blue Corn Music / March 24, 2017
[Ruthie Cecelia Foster (born February 10, 1964) is an American singer-songwriter of blues and folk music. She mixes a wide palette of American song forms, from gospel and blues to jazz, folk and soul. She has often been compared to Bonnie Raitt and Aretha Franklin. Foster is from Gause, Texas and comes from a family of gospel singers. At the age of fourteen, Ruthie was a soloist in her hometown choir, and was certain that her future would revolve around music. After high school, Ruthie moved to Waco, Texas to attend community college, where her studies concentrated in music and audio engineering. She began fronting a blues band, learning how to command a stage in the bars of Texas. Hoping to travel and gain a wider world perspective, Foster joined the Navy, and soon her musical talents soon had her singing in the naval band Pride, that played pop and funk hits at recruitment drives in the southeastern United States. Following her tour of duty, Ruthie headed to New York City where she became a regular performer at various local folk venues. Atlantic Records got wind of Foster’s talent and offered her a recording deal, with the intent of cultivating her as a budding pop star, but Foster wasn’t interested in a pop career, preferring instead to explore the various strains of American roots music that had informed her childhood. When her mother fell ill in 1993, Foster left New York and her recording deal and returned to Texas to be with her family. She began working as a camera operator and production assistant at a television station in College Station, Texas while she cared for her mother, who passed in 1996. A year later in 1997, Foster self-released the album Full Circle, the success of which paved the way to a long relationship with the record label Blue Corn Music. Blue Corn released the follow up album Crossover in 1999, Runaway Soul in 2002, and Stages (featuring a series of live tracks) in 2004. Stages marked a turning point in Foster’s career, as the experience of a Ruthie Foster live show was able to be experienced by a wide audience. Foster’s next release was Heal Yourself in 2006, followed by the studio album The Phenomenal Ruthie Foster in 2008 (produced by Papa Mali), and The Truth According to Ruthie Foster (produced by Grammy-winning producer Chris Goldsmith), recorded at Ardent Studios in Memphis, in 2009, all released by Blue Corn Music. The Truth According to Ruthie Foster earned Ruthie a Grammy Award Nomination for Best Contemporary Blues Album. A second album of Foster’s live performances, Live At Antone’s (CD and DVD), was released in 2011. In 2012, Ruthie and Blue Corn released the studio album Let It Burn, which featured special guests The Blind Boys of Alabama, William Bell and the rhythm section of The Funky Meters, and was produced by Grammy-award winner John Chelew. Let It Burn earned Foster a second Grammy Nomination, this time for Best Blues Album, and was the vehicle for numerous Blues Music Awards won by Foster. Her most recent album, Joy Comes Back, was released by Blue Corn Music in 2017.]

[Ruthie Foster hosts the International Folk Music Awards Show, Wednesday, February 14, at 7:00 PM, at The Folly Theatre with guest performances and presentations by John Oates, Guy Davis, Giri and Uma Peters, Anais Mitchell, and others.]

10:27 – Interview with Erin McGrane and Jeff Freling

Formed in 2010, Jeff Freling and Erin McGrane are Victor & Penny, a Swing-infused folk-jazz rooted in the riff-driven Kansas City style, delivered with class, joy, and soaring musical improvisation.. The duo have released four full length albums and most recently a 7″ vinyl single. Kansas City is their home.

Victor & Penny are members of Folk Alliance International Member, and Midwest Music Foundation

Victor & Penny were named “Best Folk Ensemble 2015” by the PITCH; “Standout Concert of the Year” by the Joplin Globe; and are two-time Folk Alliance International official showcase artists. V&P and the LCO feature tight vocal harmonies, dazzling guitar work, red-hot horns and a fiery ukulele. This corset-tight quintet brings a modern Kansas City voice to their original tunes and prohibition era jazz with sterling musicianship. V&P and the LCO impress and delight with charm and hot licks and they are an “absolute rollicking blast.”

The group released a new full-length CD, “Electricity” (March 2016) which debuted on the Folk Radio DJ charts at #12 with the #3 song. “Electricity” crackles and sparks with joy and regret; truths and dares; love and love gone wrong all set to a score of vibrant, rhythmic swing and virtuosic musicianship. Electricity is the culmination of 160,000 miles, 5 years and nearly 1,000 performances and is a testament to the incomparable vivacity of Victor & Penny’s live show, with newly added sophistication and rich instrumentation.

from: Odyssey / Sony Music Group / August 18, 2017
[The Accidentals are an American musical band, formed in Traverse City, Michigan, in 2012, by Savannah Buist and Katie Larson, joined by percussionist Michael Dause in 2014. The group features an eclectic blend of indie folk, pop, jazz, bluegrass, rock, classical, and other genres, utilizing a wide variety of instruments that reflect the group’s orchestral roots and electronic influences. As of 2017 they had released three full length albums and one EP. In March 2015, they performed at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas, which featured some 2,200 acts, and were named as one of the top breakout groups by Billboard staff. On January 9, 2017, the band announced that they were signed to Sony Masterworks via a feature in Local Spins, the album will feature multiple guest performers, including Jack White bassist Dominic John Davis, Jenny Conlee of The Decemberists, Keller Williams, Kaki King, Lily & Madeleine, and Carbon Leaf. Buist described Masterworks as “a family that gets us and our music, and wants to support that authentically”, while Larson added, “We feel like we can be truly who we are and they appreciate the honesty.” Masterworks is primarily a classical and jazz label, having previously signed such names as Yo-Yo Ma, Sonny Rollins, and Yanni, though it has recently expanded its reach with its signing of indie folk duo Tall Heights and acknowledgement of bluegrass on The Goat Rodeo Sessions. On August 18, 2017, the Accidentals embarked on tour throughout the United States and Canada to promote the album. The album received positive reviews from critics, including PopMatters, AllMusic, and Local Spins.]

12. The Mammals – “My Baby Drinks Water”
from: My Baby Drinks Water – Single / The Mammals / May 1, 2017
[Indie-roots trailblazers, The Mammals, bring politically-infused string-band fervor to their re-emergent new album and US tour in 2018. In an era of disconnect, The Mammals enjoy re-connecting generations thru their truth-telling lyrics, off-the-cuff storytelling and euphoric instrumentals, and by organizing a hometown community folk festival (The Hoot) near Woodstock, NY. Founded in 2001 by Seeger’s grandson, Tao, second generation fiddler/singer, Ruth Ungar, and multi-instrumental wordsmith, Mike Merenda, the original trio enjoyed a remarkable 7 year run that brought them to the largest folk festivals across North America, Australia and Denmark, Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium New York’s Carnegie Hall as the special guest of folk legend Arlo Guthrie, and to the pages of numerous publications lauding their unique “traditional-music-in-combat-boots-sound” including a feature in The New York Times handpicking them as a leader in a pack of new-wave stringbands “updating that old-time sound.” After a considerable break from the project during which time Merenda and Ungar married and started a family, a bi-annual folk festival, and a musical duo aptly called, Mike + Ruthy, and Seeger pursuing a solo career before retiring from music all together to start a family of his own, The Mammals returned fronted by Merenda and Ungar in 2017 “stronger than ever” (Folk Alley) with a pair of politically charged singles, “Culture War” and “My Baby Drinks Water,” and the announcement of a new album in 2018. The 2017 lineup includes some former Mammal members including Jacob Silver and Ken Maiuri when they are not touring with Lee Fields and the B-52’s respectively. “It’s a blessing to have a connection to the past and such great new players too,” says Mike. “The alchemy of fiddle, banjo, guitar, bass and drums is magic… and when keys, pedal steel, and horns are in the mix we leap to the next level.”]

13. Radio Free Honduras – “Morena (feat. Steve Eisen)”
from: Radio Free Honduras / Radio Free Honduras / September 6, 2014
[Charlie Baran has lived a life of music. Before moving the the United States he was a founding member of the legendary Honduran musical group Banda Blanca, who’s song “Sopa de Caracol” became the #1 Billboard Top Latin Songs hit in 1992. Now a maintenance man at a Catholic grade school by day, Charlie has kept his musical flame glowing largely through acoustic solo performances around Chicago for the past ten years. Charlie Baran is a true virtuoso. No one sees him perform without recognizing the presence of a true master – an heir to a rich tradition of Honduran music, as well as a guitar slinging showman and a gifted songwriter whose skill transcends all genres. But throughout most of his career he has existed in the shadows – until the formation of Radio Free Honduras. Radio Free Honduras is a diverse collective of Chicago musicians, all united under one goal – supporting the artistry of Charlie Baran and bringing this tremendous talent into the spotlight where it belongs. Founded by Dan Abu-Absi, longtime guitarist for JT and the Clouds and Birds of Chicago, Radio Free Honduras plays mostly Baran originals, but their live shows often feature a wide variety of reimagined cover songs. This band provides Charlie with the wide musical pallet his talent (and songs) deserve. Abu-Absi has gathered a large, revolving collective of some of Chicago’s most talented musicians; lively percussion, eclectic instrumentation, and rich harmonies all provide the backdrop, allowing Charlie to do what he does best – stunning guitar work, tapping into what seems a limitless supply of energy and enthusiasm for music. Charlie Baran has lived a long and storied musical life – but very few are familiar with his side of the story. Radio Free Honduras has made it their mission to change that.]

14. Rosie & The Riveters – “Let ‘Em Talk”
from: Ms. Behave / Rosie & the Riveters / April 6, 2018
[Saskatoon, Saskatchewan trio formed by Alexis Normand, Farideh Olsen, and Allyson Reigh. Rosie & the Riveters never planned to get political. But opening a newspaper or watching the news these days made it impossible to see the status of women around the world and stay silent. The result is Ms. Behave – a collection of gritty, sultry, vintage-inspired folk anthems that paint a portrait of a woman’s voice in a man’s world. The band wrote most of the album in a cabin nestled in the woods in the dead of the Canadian winter. A quick read through song titles like “Gotta Get Paid”, “Let’em Talk” and “I Wanna Be King” gives an idea of what they have to say. While their single, “Ms. Behave” lays down a Bill-Withers-inspired groove and rejects the policing of women’s behavior, “I Believe You” sprung from the outrage and sorrow they felt after hearing the recent avalanche of stories of sexual assault. Produced by Joshua Van Tassel (Rose Cousins, Great Lake Swimmers), their sophomore album echoes Aretha Franklin’s demand for R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Rosie & the Riveters believe women are the world’s greatest untapped resource which is why they invest 20% of merchandise profits in microfinance initiatives through KIVA.org. They helped women like Alice in Kenya expand her horticulture farm and Maria in Ecuador purchase a sewing machine for her tailoring business. To date, they have contributed more than $8800 to over 175 projects around the world. More info at http://www.rosieandtheriveters.com.]

17. Anais Mitchell – “Flowers” (Eurydice’s Song)
from: Hadestown / Righteous Babe Records / 2010
[born in 1981 Anais Mitchell grew up on a farm in Addison County, Vermont. She began writing songs at 17 and performing them during her school days, where she studied political science and languages. Her 2nd recording, “Hymns for the Exiled,” eventually reached the ears of Ani DiFranco, who signed Mitchell to her label, Righteous Babe Records. Anaïs Mitchell’s latest release comes in the form of a folk opera. Hadestown is the modern day interpretation of the ancient Greek myth of the poet Opheus and his doomed quest to rescue his wife Eurydice from the underworld. Hadestown began its existence in 2006 as a live “acoustic rock opera” that the Vermont-based singer/songwriter created in collaboration with director Ben t. Matchstick (Bread & Puppet Theater) and arranger / orchestrator Michael Chorney. After loading the sets and the 22-member cast of Vermont performers into a former circus bus and touring New England during “full-on winter,” it was time to rework a few songs. Next, Mitchell called upon a few fellow musicians to lend their voices to a recorded version—not a cast album, but a stand-alone, selcontained song cycle. The result is a veritable Who’s Who of modern indie folk/rock: Justin Vernon of Bon Iver plays Orpheus; Greg Brown is Hades; and Ani DiFranco plays Persephone. Also on hand in smaller roles are the Haden Triplets (Petra, Rachel, and Tanya) as the Fates and Ben Knox Miller of The Low Anthem as the Hermes, Mitchell herself sings the part of Eurydice.] [Hadestown became a 2016 stage musical adaptation of a 2010 folk opera concept album by the same name, written by Anaïs Mitchell. It premiered off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop on May 6, 2016 and ran through July 31. The show was developed for the stage and directed by Rachel Chavkin. Like the original concept album, Hadestown tells a version of the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, where Orpheus journeys to the underworld to rescue his wife Eurydice. Music by Anaïs Mitchell, Michael Chorney, Todd Sickafoose, Lyrics by Anaïs Mitchell, Book by Anaïs Mitchell.]

[Anais Mitchell play an Official Showcase at Folk Alliance International Conference at Thursday, February 15, at 9:00 PM, in Washington Park Place, at Weston Kansas City Crown Center.]

from: January 31, 2018: Super Blue Blood Moon – Single / Asteroid B – 612 / Jan 28, 2018
[Musical project led by singer-songwriter & multi-instrumentalist Ryan O’Neal. The project initially began in Wheaton, Illinois as a 3-piece band with Ryan O’Neal as the lead singer and guitarist, his brother Chad O’Neal as the drummer, and Dan Perdue as the bassist. The band independently recorded their debut album, Capture in 2000, which they used to attract the attention of Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan, who helped them get signed to a major record label Interscope Records. The band released their first and only major label album, Ghosts in 2003, before going independent again and releasing Keep No Score in 2006, and Storyboards in 2009. In the years following the release of their first four albums, both Chad O’Neal and Perdue would both leave the band to pursue other interests. Ryan O’Neal chose to retain the use of the band’s name for his solo work from that point on, but opted to focus on single songs and short EPs than any further traditional albums.]

from: Tunes We Like / Betse & Clarke / September 13, 2017
[Highway Man is from Bill (Willie) Bilyeu, part of a large musical Ozark family, that includes Mark Bilyeu, a good friend to Betse & Clarke. Betse learned this tune specially for an Ozark Heroes weekend the duo did with The Creek Rocks (comprised of Mark and his wife, Cindy Woolf). On the track Betse plays standard fiddle and Clarke plays guitar. Released only in analog on cassette featuring Betse Ellis on standard & cross-tuned fiddles, Clarke Wyatt on banjos & guitar, and some selections played by the Brushy Creek String Band, with Brett Hodges on guitar and Alex Mallett on bass. Produced as the first in a series of instrumental recordings. Betse & Clarke will continue this model, with plans to record on analog reel-to-reel tape for the next release in the series. The music may see an online release and digital distribution, but the plan is that all physical copies will be in analog format. Recorded by Wyatt live with no overdubs at home in KCMO, the instrumental collection highlights traditional Ozark tunes, learned from early string band recordings of the 1920s and from later Ozark heroes such as Bob Holt and soon to be 101 year old Violet Hensley. Betse & Clarke are a traditional and future folk duo with Betse Ellis on fiddles, violins, viola & vocals and Clarke Wyatt on banjos, guitar, cello, multi-instruments. We heard from Betse & Clarke in that last segment. Betse has been part of the KC Music Community for nearly 30 years now, and through most of those years she has made appearances on 90.1 FM as a musician. She has been a frequent guest on Wednesday MidDay Medley, River Trade Radio, and Signal to Noise with Barry Lee. She has emceed special KKFI fundraisers, and was the music director of Wednesday MidDay Medley’s LIVE stage version of A Story In A Song at the recordBar, and for the last 7 years she has been joining us during our on-air fund-drive shows to encourage our listeners to donate

Today’s show is our 719th consecutive weekly show. Last Fall we celebrated our 700th show, representing 1406 hours of radio, 10,000 hours of preparation, nearly 2000 guests, and over 15,000 songs, from thousands of musical artists.

To say we’ve been inspired by the KC music scene, is an understatement. In just this last year, we’ve played from over 200 local releases of 2017. The KC music community is fueled by a collaborative and generous heart that is beating in so many of the artists I’ve met while doing this show. I am inspired by the women who created radio on 90.1 FM long before me: my friend April Fletcher who know plays bass professionally in Los Angeles, and my friend Anne Winter, who left us in 2009, and reminded us how we’re all connected. I’m inspired by the diverse , intelligent, motivated, listeners, looking for place on the dial, where they can connect to the amazing stories and music and voice of our community.

Today we celebrate the pure idea of community radio, free form radio, radio that tells the story of the people who live here, the artists, the writers, the teachers, the performers, the lovers. Today we celebrate 719 weeks of Wednesday MidDay Medley, the show that has brought us together, at this time, on this frequency, in these community airwaves.

Her self titled debut ended up at the top of our list of The 100 Best Recordings of 2009. In 2010 Sara Swenson released her second full length recording, “All Things Big and Small” again working with Don Chaffer in Nashville who added new layers to Sara’s great songs and voice. In that time frame, she also had picked up two Kansas City Singer-Songwriter of the Year awards, performed with Sarah McLachlan’s Lilith Fair, and placed a song on the season finale of ABC’s “Private Practice.” Then after the school year ended in 2012, Sara Swenson left her job as a High School English and Journalism Teacher in Platte County High School, and left the Kansas City music scene, and she flew off to the United Kingdom, where she got married. In the Spring of 2014, Sara returned to Kansas City and performed for the Folk Alliance International Conference. [Katie West & Mike West are based in Lawrence, KS, and were relocated here after Hurricane Katrina and the devastation of their home. Hollering with all their hearts over a five string banjo and a doghouse bass, Truckstop Honeymoon live the life they sing about. Touring across three continents with four kids and a truck load of songs, Katie and Mike West tell stories about the strangeness of everyday life. 14. Krystle Warren – “Move”
from: Three The Hard Way / Parlour Door Music / August 18, 2017
[Produced by Krystle Warren and Ben Kane (D’Angelo, Emily King, PJ Morton). Recorded, engineered, and mixed by Ben Kane. Written & performed by Krystle Warren. Mixed at The Garden, Brooklyn. Mastered & cut by Alex DeTurk at Masterdisk. Last year in Krystle Warren premiered this song and her other new songs from this album at the Middle of the Map Fest in a packed room at Californos in Westport and later at The Polsky Theatre for the Performing Arts Series of Johnsons County Community College. For this record Krystle decided to play every instrument and vocals & back up vocals, “playing bass, drums, lap steel, piano, guitar, and vocals directly to analog tape. She and Ben Kane recorded in Villetaneuse, France, a small town on the outskirts of Paris in a vintage 70s era studio that offered just the right, rich sound to suggest the musical foundation for the record, and to do justice to the duo’s carefully balanced arrangements.” On the radio show last year Krystle shared inspirations for this record, early gospel recordings, that crossed over into Jazz from Pharoah Sanders, Edwin Hawkins, and The Swan Silvertones. Originally from KC, Krystle learned to play the guitar by listening to Rubber Soul & Revolver from The Beatles. Krystle graduated from Paseo Arts Academy in 2001 and began her musical career in collaborating with area jazz and pop musicians. After living in San Francisco and NYC, Krystle was signed to a French label, Because Music, and moved to Paris to release “Circles” in 2009. Krystle played French and British television programs, including Later with Jools Holland, garnering critical acclaim and traveling all over the world with Rufus Wainwright, Nick Cave, Norah Jones, and Joan As Police Woman. Krystle created, Parlour Door Music, to release “Love Songs: A Time You May Embrace” a recording from a 13-day session in Brooklyn, where she recorded 24 songs live with 28 musicians including her band, The Faculty, alongside choirs, horn and string sections.] [Krystle Warren was on WMM on September 20. We played her music on 12 different shows last year.]

15. Bobby Watson – “The Guitarist ‘For Grant Green'”
from: Made in America / Smoke Sessions Records / April 21, 2017
[Grant Green was born in St. Louis, Missouri, June 6, 1935. He died January 31, 1979. Grant Green was an American jazz guitarist and composer. He first performed in a professional setting at the age of 13 as a member of a gospel music ensemble. His influences were Charlie Christian, Charlie Parker, Lester Young, and Jimmy Raney, he first played boogie-woogie before moving on to jazz. His first recordings in St. Louis were with tenor saxophonist Jimmy Forrest for the United label. The drummer in the band was Elvin Jones, later the powerhouse behind sax player John Coltrane. Green recorded with Elvin again in the early 1960s. Lou Donaldson discovered him playing in a bar in St. Louis. After touring together with Donaldson, Green arrived in New York around 1959–60. Recording prolifically and mainly for Blue Note Records as both leader and sideman, Green performed in the hard bop, soul jazz, bebop and Latin-tinged idioms throughout his career. Critics Michael Erlewine and Ron Wynn write, “A severely underrated player during his lifetime, Grant Green is one of the great unsung heroes of jazz guitar … Green’s playing is immediately recognizable – perhaps more than any other guitarist.” Critic Dave Hunter described his sound as “lithe, loose, slightly bluesy and righteously groovy”. He often performed in an organ trio, a small group with an organ and drummer. Apart from guitarist Charlie Christian, Green’s primary influences were saxophonists, particularly Charlie Parker, and his approach was therefore almost exclusively linear rather than chordal. He thus rarely played rhythm guitar except as a sideman on albums led by other musicians. The simplicity and immediacy of Green’s playing, which tended to avoid chromaticism, derived from his early work playing rhythm and blues and, although at his best he achieved a synthesis of this style with bop, he was essentially a blues guitarist and returned almost exclusively to this style in his later career. From Smoke Sessions Records on Made in America: Jazz great Bobby Watson celebrates some of the vital but less well-known contributions of African-Americans on Made in America, his first recording on Smoke Sessions Records. Saxophonist and composer Watson does his part to call attention to black pioneers in a variety of fields, from politics to pop culture, science to sports. These compositions are inspired by a few names that should be familiar to jazz fans, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Grant Green, but also by more obscure historic figures such as Wendell Pruitt, Butterfly McQueen, Major Taylor, Madam C.J. Walker, Isaac Murphy, Bass Reeves, and Dr. Mark Dean. Watson explains, “This project has been a history lesson for me and I hope it will be a history lesson for the listeners.” From wikipedia.org: “Bobby Watson was born in Lawrence, Kansas, August 23, 1953. he is an American post-bop jazz alto saxophonist, composer, producer, and educator. Watson now has 27 recordings as a leader. He appears on nearly 100 other recordings as either co-leader or in a supporting role. Watson has recorded more than 100 original compositions. Watson grew up in Bonner Springs, Kansas, and Kansas City, Kansas. He attended the University of Miami with fellow students Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius and Bruce Hornsby. After graduating in 1975, he moved to NYC and joined Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. He performed with the Messengers from 1977 to 1981. After the Jazz Messengers, Watson work with many notable musicians, including: drummers Max Roach and Louis Hayes, fellow saxophonists George Coleman and Branford Marsalis, multi-instrumentalist Sam Rivers and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. In addition, Watson has served in a supporting role for a number of vocalists including: Joe Williams, Dianne Reeves, Lou Rawls, Betty Carter, and Carmen Lundy, and has performed as a sideman with Carlos Santana, George Coleman, Rufus and Chaka Khan, Bob Belden and John Hicks. Later, in association with bassist Curtis Lundy and drummer Victor Lewis, Watson started the first edition of Horizon, an acoustic quintet modeled after the Jazz Messengers but with its own slightly more modern twist. In addition to his work as leader of Horizon, Watson also led a group known as the High court of Swing (a tribute to the music of Johnny Hodges), The Tailor-Made Big Band (16 pieces in all) and is a founding member of the 29th Street Saxophone Quartet, an all-horn, four-piece group with alto saxophonist Ed Jackson, tenor saxophonist Rich Rothenberg, and baritone saxophonist Jim Hartog. Watson also composed an original song for the soundtrack of Robert De Niro’s A Bronx Tale (1993). A resident of New York for most of his professional life, Watson served as a member of the adjunct faculty and taught private saxophone at William Patterson University from 1985 to 1986 and the Manhattan School of Music from 1996 to 1999. He is currently involved with the Thelonious Monk Institute’s yearly “Jazz in America” high school outreach program. In 2000, he was approached to return to his native midwestern surroundings on the Kansas-Missouri border. Watson was selected as the first William D. and Mary Grant/Missouri, Distinguished Professorship in Jazz Studies. The past seven years he has served as the director of jazz studies at the University of Missouri–Kansas City Conservatory of Music although he still manages to balance live engagements around the world with his teaching responsibilities. Watson’s ensembles at UMKC have garnered several awards and national recognition.]

19. Joon Moon – “Tiger (Radio Edit)”
from: Moonshine Corner / Kwaiden Records / September 29, 2017
[First full length album from band formed in 2014 in Montmartre area of Paris. This follows the June 2017 release of their EP Tiger, their April 2016 EP, Call Me, and their October 2015 EP Chess. Joon Moon is the meeting of House producer Julien Decoret, drummer Raphael Chassin and American expat and singer/song writer extraordinaire Krystle Warren. After ten years of touring the world playing double bass with Marc Collin’s Nouvelle Vague ensemble, alongside excursions into house music on the Yellow Productions Art of Disco compilations, not to mention co-producing Florent Marchet’s Bamby Galaxy album, it was time for songwriter/producer/renaissance man Julien Decoret to dedicate his heart and soul to a new challenge. With Raphaël Chassin, (Hugh Coltman, Vanessa Paradis, Pauline Croze) on drums, helping out with the production and arrangements, and Sébastien Trouvé as sound engineer, Decoret set out on his retro-modern Joon Moon mission, laying out the contours of a world where trip-hop, jazz, soul and electronic music live side by side, sharing their joys and sorrows. The only missing element was that one last bit of magic, a voice that could take the project to ever-loftier heights. Enter Krystle Warren. She had worked with Rufus Wainwright, and Scritti Politti’s Green Gartside, and had made forays into house music herself by providing vocals to two cuts off Hercules and Love Affair’s, The Feast of the Broken Heart. That’s not even mentioning her own band, Krystle Warren and The Faculty – and its three albums – which display her impressive grasp of soul music, folk, blues…With Tiger, the band’s social concerns are brought to the forefront. A timely piece from a Franco-American band about the need to question authority and the power structure of society. Tiger sees its tension build up like an onimous populist, and turns into defiance. Art and love in a movement towards emancipation.]

25. Approach – “The Luv (Clean Edit)”
from: Elegant Knock / Datura Records / January 20, 2017
[Lawrence, Kansas based Sean Hunt is Approach. Sequenced, Produced, Recorded, Mixed & Mastered By: Aikido Bray at Prosidio Gardens in Lovely Lawrence, Ks. Sean Hunt writes: “Elegant Knock” started out as a beat album named after a production night I throw in Lawrence. It turned into a 10 track album that pays respect to a sound and vibe I loved in High School. It isn’t a throwback project on some I wish it was 96′ ish, it’s a “why aren’t we still freaking these sounds now” thang. My original concept was flipped when I dug out my old Ensoniq EPS 16+ and started funking around. The next thing I knew I was making a album I wanted to rap on. I did all of the production on the EPS (everything and it’s was headache) and made a few mixing edits on the Ensoniq ASR-10 (mainly stereo pans). I pushed myself to use the tools of yesteryear to capture the feeling I was seeking out (it was a pain in the ass and I lost a ton of beats in the process). I loved every second of it though. I feel like it’s the perfect bridge between my Lincoln Marshall project with Milkdrop and my album “Antique Mall” (coming out this year I promise).]

[Lincoln Marshall plays recordBar, 1520 Grand, Thursday, November 23, with Steddy P and DJ Mahf, Nakama Music Group, and Scotty Wu]
