Caroline Lee & Barry Lee

We lost one of our own at KKFI as Caroline Lee passed away early in the morning on Wednesday, April 18th, surrounded by her family. Caroline was married to Barry Lee. Together they have been a constant presence in the area music scene and on the radio. Caroline was an early volunteer and organizer for 90.1 FM. When the station went the air in 1988 Caroline hosted and produced “Watusi Rodeo,” (one of the first alternative country radio shows). When that program ended its run, she was often a guest-host on, Signal To Noise. Barry Lee will present a radio memorial for Caroline on May 4th at 9:00 pm. There will also be a concert at Knuckleheads Saloon in July in her memory.

In honor of Caroline’s passing I would love to play a song from Cris Williamson’s 2001 release “Ashes,” 12 original songs about transformation, love, and the Phoenix rising. Helping Cris with the vocals is her friend Bonnie Raitt.

John Keck’s mom was a teacher.

Missouri Queen.

John’s words – This is an ode to my single mother and the advice she’s given me. I wanted a short biographical song that allows me to give a frame of reference for where all of my songs come from and this was born. My Grandfather flew a B-29 in WWII called the “Missouri Queen”. There were Japanese fighters with floodlights on their noses that would chase the B-29s and light them up so they could be shot down. She told me that he would say “Don’t get caught in the light”, which is advice that she passed down for me to interrupt My Dad was a pilot and always gone when i was growing up, I would look up at the stars and confuse them with taillights of airplanes. Hence the shooting stars. When my parents separated, my mom returned to the farm where my grandparents lived and it became an integral part of my life. When I pushed my mom for more advice for the song she repeated what she has always told me, which is this story. “A Persian king asked the wisest man of his country for advice that would always be true, and he replied ‘This too shall pass’”

“Song For Mother”

John’s words – The last piece began after the shooting in Ferguson, MO. In following weeks I heard an interview with a woman who was protesting, I remember her saying “We’re just trying to keep our sons alive in the streets, don’t you understand, why can’t people understand”. Her voice stayed with me, haunting me as I watched and read about shooting after shooting. Eventually I dreamt a conversation with a mother who has been confronted all of her days with the death of their child. I woke up and sang this song to myself in the middle of the night. At first she is hesitant to say anything, but then can’t stop herself, going through grief, confusion, sadness, anger, frustration and finally feeling hopeless, pointless. The faint piano represents the child voice/spirit and the violin is speaking for the mother.

John’s words – Just before recording I spoke to the violinist, Shannon O’Shea, I told her what the song represented and asked her to play a solo with that represents the physical struggle when you’re sobbing so hard you can’t control your breath.

Patrick Alonzo Conway is a Kansas City based composer, performer, educator, and independent musician. He holds a Masters in Music Composition from the UMKC Conservatory of Music. He was a founding member of newEar, and he works with Terrestrial Consort, People’s Liberation Big Band of Greater Kansas City, Owen/Cox Dance Group, Mambo DeLeon, Chris Hazelton’s Boogaloo 7, Expassionates, and BCR. He is a 2012 recipient of the Charlotte Street Foundation Generative Performing Artist Fellow Award. Patrick Alonzo Conway is also the Director of Gamelan Genta Kasturi.

Patrick joins us to share details about KC’s Gamelan Genta Kasturi – 15th Anniversary performance at The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, Sunday, April 29 at 2:00 PM.

The performance will feature guest Balinese artists: I Ketút Gedé Asnawa, Putu Oka Mardiani, Ni Made Nias Yunirika and Ni Nyoman Nias Yonitika;

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Gamelan Students: Putu Tangkas Hiranmayena, Ika Putri and Fedelia Trivianti;

and The Indonesian Community of KC Dancers; plus special guest Shawn Hansen on electronics.

This concert of will demonstrate traditional and modern Balinese Gamelan Music and Dance. This event is free, but requires a ticket to enter.

For over 15 years KC’s community Balinese gamelan orchestra, Gamelan Genta Kasturi, has been presenting community concerts.

The group’s founder and family return in a special concert of Balinese Music & Dance featuring original compositions by Mr. Asnawa and traditional classics.

Gamelan Genta Kasturi with Balinese Guest Artists, under the direction of I Ketút Gedé Asnawa, featuring his wife Putu Oka Mardiani Asnawa, and two daughters Yunirika Asnawa & Yonitika Asnawa performing several dances with the music.

Mr. Asnawa has been faculty at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in conjunction with the Robert E. Brown Center For World Music since leaving Kansas City in 2006. He and his family maintain an active schedule performing, teaching and promoting Balinese Cultural Arts.

Gamelan Genta Kasturi have been Studio Residents as part of the Charlotte Street Foundation/Urban Culture Project Studio Residency Program.

Gamelan Genta Kasturi, premiered a large scale collaborative work in 2011 featuring his Patrick Alonzo Conway’s original composition Angels & Demons at Play through Urban Culture Project and ArtSounds.

A gamelan is a traditional musical ensemble from Indonesia, typically from the islands of Java and Bali, featuring a variety of instruments such as metallophones, xylophones, kendang (drums) & gongs; bamboo flutes, bowed & plucked strings. Vocalists may also be included. For most Indonesians, gamelan music is an integral part of Indonesian culture.

The term refers more to the set of instruments than to the players of those instruments. A gamelan is a set of instruments as a distinct entity, built and tuned to stay together – instruments from different gamelan are generally not interchangeable.

Bali is a province of Indonesia. The province covers a few small neighboring islands as well as the isle of Bali. The main island is located in the westernmost end of the Lesser Sunda Islands, lying between Java to the west and Lombok to the east. It is one of the country’s 34 provinces w/ the provincial capital at Denpasar towards the S. of the island.

Legendary singer songwriter Cris Williamson recently released her 32nd album, Motherland. Cris Williamson is a brilliant songwriter, poet, pioneer, and renegade who recorded her first album in the 1964 when she was sixteen. Cris Williamson’s groundbreaking album, The Changer and the Changed, was released in 1975, and became one of the best-selling independent releases of all time, selling over 500,000 copies. The sales of these records allowed the independent label Olivia Records to release music from a whole new movement of diverse female artists, all overlooked by mainstream music. Cris Williamson helped to forge a historic movement in the male dominated music industry, fostering the creation of completely female owned record labels, touring companies, and music festivals. The movement, (often misclassified as a genre) was about opening the doors, and smashing glass ceilings, for so many women to follow, who had been shut-out of the game, simply because of their gender. Cris seemed to shrug all of that off with an earthy sexy confidence that makes audiences swoon for her. She wrote music for people desiring to find their own identities in modern folk and pop music. No one had ever courageously written and performed so many brilliant full length albums of songs by women, about women, for women. At the same time, these songs are universal to us all. These songs were all impeccably and professionally produced and have stood the test of time and could go up against any of the songs by Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, or James Taylor. Only difference is mainstream radio and television has almost completely ignored Cris Williamson. Despite this injustice, through her amazing voice, and spirit, and open heart, Cris has helped make the world a better place for all female and LGBTQIA artists who follow the path she cleared. We owe her for that. Cris Williamson has written and recorded hundreds of beautiful, incredible songs, while remaining one of our most underrated singer songwriters of the last 50 years. On Motherland we just heard the title track, a song Cris wrote. All of the other songs on the new record are written by her musical contemporaries of the past 50 years: Joni Mitchell, Eliza Gilkyson, Laura Nyro, Patty Griffin, Bob Dylan, Jackson Brown, James Taylor, Leonard Cohen & Jennifer Warnes. “I’m kind of hand-carried, person to person,” Cris Williamson told the journalist Ben Fong-Torres in 1981, when asked how people discovered her music. “There are secretaries who’ve told me they can’t get through the day without running home during lunch hour and playing it.” Such was the impact of the Wyoming native’s voice, clear as a mountain stream, and her empathetic songwriting, which made this album one of the best-selling independent releases of all time and the cornerstone of the feminist “women’s music” movement. Produced by Williamson and featuring dozens of the era’s finest women musicians — including guitarists Meg Christian and June Millington, bass virtuoso Jacqueline Robbins and vocalists Holly Near and Margie Adam — Changer blended pop, country and folk elements in songs that were both cuttingly intimate and generously communal. (A few featured large choruses inspired by the sing-alongs women’s music artists inspired in concert.) Williamson’s own keyboard playing ranged from contemplative to dance-floor funky. The clear and confident lesbian desire behind love songs like “Sweet Woman” and “Dream Child” made Williamson a sex symbol; her philosophical side made Changer a record of spiritual growth, too. Ginny Berson belonged to the Furies collective, a radical, separatist household that published journals, taught classes, and advocated communal living apart from men. Judy Dlugacz, 20, had postponed law school to pursue lesbian activism and was interested in finding an economically workable means of serving the women’s community. Performing as a folk musician at area clubs and coffeehouses, Meg Christian was eager to meet other women songwriters like Cris Williamson—who had released her first album in 1964 at age 16.

When Williamson came on tour to D.C., Christian and Berson not only arranged to bring other women’s music fans to the concert; in a gesture that changed history, they also scheduled a follow-up interview on Georgetown University’s “Radio Free Women” program. On the show, Berson spoke about how she and other members of the Furies collective were searching for a bigger project to invest in— “something that’s for women, by women, and supported by women’s money”—and Williamson responded with a simple yet provocative suggestion, “Why don’t you start a women’s record company?”

It has been over 10 years since Cris Williamson has been back to Kansas City.

Never one to rest on her laurels, to which Cris replied laughing, “What Laurels?” In the last 17 years Cris have released 11 full length albums (a few of those were double albums). That works out to be a new album every year and half. Considering the process of writing, recording, mastering, raising the funds to produce and launch a new record, we asked Cris to share what she might be currently working on for the next release. She told us that she has a back log of new songs she has written and collected and from those songs she is working through what she may release next. She has been playing with the idea of releasing an album of American standards, but held back because so many other musicians have been doing this.

(Note: The laurels that are being referred to when someone is said to ‘rest on his laurels’ are the aromatically scented Laurus Nobilis trees or, more specifically, their leaves. The trees are known colloquially as Sweet Bay and are commonly grown as culinary or ornamental plants. Rest on his laurels. The origins of the phrase lie in ancient Greece, where laurel wreaths were symbols of victory and status.)

Throughout the last 15 years Cris Williamson has also conducted Songwriting Workshops.

This summer Cris will be traveling to Norway with Olivia Cruises, and returning to National Women’s Music Festival, and in the fall, attending Women’s Week in Provincetown.

[Musical project led by singer-songwriter & multi-instrumentalist Ryan O’Neal. The project initially began in Wheaton, Illinois as a 3-piece band with Ryan O’Neal as the lead singer and guitarist, his brother Chad O’Neal as the drummer, and Dan Perdue as the bassist. The band independently recorded their debut album, Capture in 2000, which they used to attract the attention of Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan, who helped them get signed to a major record label Interscope Records. The band released their first and only major label album, Ghosts in 2003, before going independent again and releasing Keep No Score in 2006, and Storyboards in 2009. In the years following the release of their first four albums, both Chad O’Neal and Perdue would both leave the band to pursue other interests. Ryan O’Neal chose to retain the use of the band’s name for his solo work from that point on, but opted to focus on single songs and short EPs than any further traditional albums.]

Betse Ellis is originally from Fayetteville, Arkansas. She received her Bachelors of Arts in Music and a Bachelors of Arts in English, from the University of Missouri – Kansas City. She has been playing the Violin for over 40 years, with over 20 years playing fiddle and also working as a teacher of music. Betse was one of the founding members of the critically acclaimed and internationally known band, The Wilders. Betse has released two solo records, and now is recording and performing with her partner, multi-instrumentalist Clarke Wyatt, as Betse & Clarke. Their debut album, “River Still Rise” was in our Top Ten, of The 116 Best Recordings of 2016, and last year they released a new full length recording on cassette called Tunes We Like, part of WMM’s 117 Best Recordings of 2017.

Marion Merritt is our most frequent contributor to WMM, She grew up in Los Angeles, and St. Louis. She went to college in Columbia, Missouri. She studied art and musical engineering, and is a avid lover of classic films and punk rock music. She saw Talking Heads on their first U.S. tour when they played One Block West, in 1978. For 14 years she has been sharing her musical discoveries and information from her musically-encyclopedic brain on Wednesday MidDay Medley. Marion has joined us for every on-air fund drive to help raise funds for the MidCoast Radio Project. Marion is also the proprietor of Records With Merritt, at 1614 Westport Rd. in Kansas City, Missouri, featurinh new vinyl releases, weekly in-store performances from young and upcoming bands, and last fall was the location for a wedding. 5. Betse & Clarke – “Highway Man”

[Highway Man is from Bill (Willie) Bilyeu, part of a large musical Ozark family, that includes Mark Bilyeu, a good friend to Betse & Clarke. Betse learned this tune specially for an Ozark Heroes weekend the duo did with The Creek Rocks (comprised of Mark and his wife, Cindy Woolf). On the track Betse plays standard fiddle and Clarke plays guitar. Released only in analog on cassette featuring Betse Ellis on standard & cross-tuned fiddles, Clarke Wyatt on banjos & guitar, and some selections played by the Brushy Creek String Band, with Brett Hodges on guitar and Alex Mallett on bass. Produced as the first in a series of instrumental recordings. Betse & Clarke will continue this model, with plans to record on analog reel-to-reel tape for the next release in the series. The music may see an online release and digital distribution, but the plan is that all physical copies will be in analog format. Recorded by Wyatt live with no overdubs at home in KCMO, the instrumental collection highlights traditional Ozark tunes, learned from early string band recordings of the 1920s and from later Ozark heroes such as Bob Holt and soon to be 101 year old Violet Hensley. Betse & Clarke are a traditional and future folk duo with Betse Ellis on fiddles, violins, viola & vocals and Clarke Wyatt on banjos, guitar, cello, multi-instruments. Today’s show is our 719th consecutive weekly show. Last Fall we celebrated our 700th show, representing 1406 hours of radio, 10,000 hours of preparation, nearly 2000 guests, and over 15,000 songs, from thousands of musical artists.

To say we’ve been inspired by the KC music scene, is an understatement. In just this last year, we’ve played from over 200 local releases of 2017. The KC music community is fueled by a collaborative and generous heart that is beating in so many of the artists I’ve met while doing this show. I am inspired by the women who created radio on 90.1 FM long before me: my friend April Fletcher who know plays bass professionally in Los Angeles, and my friend Anne Winter, who left us in 2009, and reminded us how we’re all connected. I’m inspired by the diverse , intelligent, motivated, listeners, looking for place on the dial, where they can connect to the amazing stories and music and voice of our community.

9. Sara Swenson – “In A Field”

[Critically acclaimed singer songwriter Sara Swenson has released some of our most played and favorite recordings of the last 10 years. Her self titled debut ended up at the top of our list of The 100 Best Recordings of 2009. In 2010 Sara Swenson released her second full length recording, “All Things Big and Small” again working with Don Chaffer in Nashville who added new layers to Sara’s great songs and voice. In November of 2011, Sara released her 5 song EP called “Never Left My Mind,” featuring her band at the time, The Pearl Snaps. In that time frame, she also had picked up two Kansas City Singer-Songwriter of the Year awards, performed with Sarah McLachlan’s Lilith Fair, and placed a song on the season finale of ABC’s “Private Practice.” Then after the school year ended in 2012, Sara Swenson left her job as a High School English and Journalism Teacher in Platte County High School, and left the Kansas City music scene, and she flew off to the United Kingdom, where she got married. In the Spring of 2014, Sara returned to Kansas City and performed for the Folk Alliance International Conference. On July 18, 2014 Sara released Runway Lights her 4th studio album that captures snapshots of her 18-month experience of living abroad, moving from dating to marriage and sorting through the accompanying transitions. 10. Truckstop Honeymoon – “Go Go Go”

[Katie West & Mike West are based in Lawrence, KS, and were relocated here after Hurricane Katrina and the devastation of their home. Hollering with all their hearts over a five string banjo and a doghouse bass, Truckstop Honeymoon live the life they sing about. Touring across three continents with four kids and a truck load of songs, Katie and Mike West tell stories about the strangeness of everyday life. Their music combines elements of bluegrass, music hall jazz and straight up rock’n’roll. Vaudevillian wit and showmanship spike their energetic live shows, while the fearless honesty of their songs touches the hearts of listners around the world. In eleven years Truckstop Honeymoon have released eight CDs and a full length documentary film on Baton Rouge label, Squirrel Records. They perform at International folk festivals, rock clubs, neighborhood bars, house concerts and hay barns from Nebraska to Tasmania. Truckstop Honeymoon’s story begins in New Orleans, where Katie played wash-tub bass and blues piano in the streets of the French Quarter. Mastered & cut by Alex DeTurk at Masterdisk. Last year in Krystle Warren premiered this song and her other new songs from this album at the Middle of the Map Fest in a packed room at Californos in Westport and later at The Polsky Theatre for the Performing Arts Series of Johnsons County Community College. For this record Krystle decided to play every instrument and vocals & back up vocals, “playing bass, drums, lap steel, piano, guitar, and vocals directly to analog tape. She and Ben Kane recorded in Villetaneuse, France, a small town on the outskirts of Paris in a vintage 70s era studio that offered just the right, rich sound to suggest the musical foundation for the record, and to do justice to the duo’s carefully balanced arrangements.” On the radio show last year Krystle shared inspirations for this record, early gospel recordings, that crossed over into Jazz from Pharoah Sanders, Edwin Hawkins, and The Swan Silvertones. Originally from KC, Krystle learned to play the guitar by listening to Rubber Soul & Revolver from The Beatles. Krystle graduated from Paseo Arts Academy in 2001 and began her musical career in collaborating with area jazz and pop musicians. After living in San Francisco and NYC, Krystle was signed to a French label, Because Music, and moved to Paris to release “Circles” in 2009. Krystle played French and British television programs, including Later with Jools Holland, garnering critical acclaim and traveling all over the world with Rufus Wainwright, Nick Cave, Norah Jones, and Joan As Police Woman. Krystle created, Parlour Door Music, to release “Love Songs: A Time You May Embrace” a recording from a 13-day session in Brooklyn, where she recorded 24 songs live with 28 musicians including her band, The Faculty, alongside choirs, horn and string sections.] [Krystle Warren was on WMM on September 20. 15. Bobby Watson – “The Guitarist ‘For Grant Green'”

[Grant Green was born in St. Louis, Missouri, June 6, 1935. He died January 31, 1979. Grant Green was an American jazz guitarist and composer. He first performed in a professional setting at the age of 13 as a member of a gospel music ensemble. His influences were Charlie Christian, Charlie Parker, Lester Young, and Jimmy Raney, he first played boogie-woogie before moving on to jazz. His first recordings in St. Louis were with tenor saxophonist Jimmy Forrest for the United label. The drummer in the band was Elvin Jones, later the powerhouse behind sax player John Coltrane. Green recorded with Elvin again in the early 1960s. Lou Donaldson discovered him playing in a bar in St. Louis. After touring together with Donaldson, Green arrived in New York around 1959–60. Recording prolifically and mainly for Blue Note Records as both leader and sideman, Green performed in the hard bop, soul jazz, bebop and Latin-tinged idioms throughout his career. Critics Michael Erlewine and Ron Wynn write, “A severely underrated player during his lifetime, Grant Green is one of the great unsung heroes of jazz guitar … Green’s playing is immediately recognizable – perhaps more than any other guitarist.” Critic Dave Hunter described his sound as “lithe, loose, slightly bluesy and righteously groovy”. He often performed in an organ trio, a small group with an organ and drummer. Apart from guitarist Charlie Christian, Green’s primary influences were saxophonists, particularly Charlie Parker, and his approach was therefore almost exclusively linear rather than chordal. He thus rarely played rhythm guitar except as a sideman on albums led by other musicians. The simplicity and immediacy of Green’s playing, which tended to avoid chromaticism, derived from his early work playing rhythm and blues and, although at his best he achieved a synthesis of this style with bop, he was essentially a blues guitarist and returned almost exclusively to this style in his later career. These compositions are inspired by a few names that should be familiar to jazz fans, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Grant Green, but also by more obscure historic figures such as Wendell Pruitt, Butterfly McQueen, Major Taylor, Madam C.J. Walker, Isaac Murphy, Bass Reeves, and Dr. Mark Dean. Watson grew up in Bonner Springs, Kansas, and Kansas City, Kansas. He attended the University of Miami with fellow students Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius and Bruce Hornsby. After graduating in 1975, he moved to NYC and joined Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. He performed with the Messengers from 1977 to 1981. After the Jazz Messengers, Watson work with many notable musicians, including: drummers Max Roach and Louis Hayes, fellow saxophonists George Coleman and Branford Marsalis, multi-instrumentalist Sam Rivers and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. In addition, Watson has served in a supporting role for a number of vocalists including: Joe Williams, Dianne Reeves, Lou Rawls, Betty Carter, and Carmen Lundy, and has performed as a sideman with Carlos Santana, George Coleman, Rufus and Chaka Khan, Bob Belden and John Hicks. Later, in association with bassist Curtis Lundy and drummer Victor Lewis, Watson started the first edition of Horizon, an acoustic quintet modeled after the Jazz Messengers but with its own slightly more modern twist. In addition to his work as leader of Horizon, Watson also led a group known as the High court of Swing (a tribute to the music of Johnny Hodges), The Tailor-Made Big Band (16 pieces in all) and is a founding member of the 29th Street Saxophone Quartet, an all-horn, four-piece group with alto saxophonist Ed Jackson, tenor saxophonist Rich Rothenberg, and baritone saxophonist Jim Hartog. Watson also composed an original song for the soundtrack of Robert De Niro’s A Bronx Tale (1993). A resident of New York for most of his professional life, Watson served as a member of the adjunct faculty and taught private saxophone at William Patterson University from 1985 to 1986 and the Manhattan School of Music from 1996 to 1999. He is currently involved with the Thelonious Monk Institute’s yearly “Jazz in America” high school outreach program. In 2000, he was approached to return to his native midwestern surroundings on the Kansas-Missouri border. Watson was selected as the first William D. and Mary Grant/Missouri, Distinguished Professorship in Jazz Studies. [5th studio album from St. Vincent is Anne Erin “Annie” Clark was born September 28, 1982. Masseduction has been described as the “culmination of years of writing, with songs crafted from voice memos, text messages, and snippets of melodies that came to Clark while traveling the globe.” Clark has stated that the album focuses on themes of power, sex, drugs, sadness, imperiled relationships and death. In a press release, she stated: “every record I make has an archetype. Strange Mercy was Housewives on Pills. St. Vincent was Near-Future Cult Leader. Masseduction is different, it’s pretty first person. You can’t fact-check it, but if you want to know about my life, listen to this record. Annie Clark was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Her mother is a social worker turned administrator for a non-profit organization and her stepfather works in the tax business. Clark’s parents divorced when she was three years old, and she moved to Dallas, Texas when she was seven years old with her mother and two older sisters. Her father lives in Tulsa. Clark was raised Roman Catholic and Unitarian Universalist. From her parents’ blended families, Clark has eight siblings: four brothers and four sisters. She began playing the guitar at the age of 12 and, as a teenager, worked as a roadie for her uncle and aunt, Tuck Andress and Patti Cathcart, of the guitar-vocal jazz duo Tuck & Patti. After studying at Berklee College of Music for three years, she began her music career as a member of the Polyphonic Spree. Clark was also a member of Sufjan Stevens’s touring band before forming her own band in 2006. St. Vincent’s work has received consistent praise for its distinct musical style, which blends soft rock, experimental rock, electropop, and jazz influences. Her debut album was Marry Me (2007), followed by Actor (2009) and Strange Mercy (2011). She released a collaborative album with David Byrne in 2012 titled Love This Giant. Clark also contributed backing vocals for Swans on their 2014 album, To Be Kind. Her fourth solo album, self-titled St. Vincent, was released on February 25, 2014 and was named album of the year by The Guardian, Entertainment Weekly, NME, and Slant Magazine, as well as second best album of the year by Time magazine. The album won her a Grammy for Best Alternative Album, her first Grammy award. She was the first solo female performer in 20 years to win a Grammy in that category.]

4. Beck – “Dear Life”

[13th studio album from Beck Hansen, born July 8, 1970. Colors was recorded at co-executive producer Greg Kurstin’s LA studio, with Beck & Kurstin playing nearly every instrument themselves. Beck rose to fame in the early 1990s with his sonically experimental and lo-fi style, and became known for creating musical collages of wide genre styles. Today, he musically encompasses folk, funk, soul, hip hop, electronic, alternative rock, country, and psychedelia. He has released 13 studio albums (3 of which were independently released), as well as several non-album singles and a book of sheet music.]

[At the height of his “Loser” fame, on April 13, 1994, Beck played Kansas City’s Rhumba Box 1012 McGee. The Rhumba Box lasted from the summer of 1993 to the spring of 1994. Prior to The Rhumba Box, 1012 Megee was home to Human Observation Lab. In 1987 a group of UMKC students called Stimulus and Response took over the defunct gay bath house, Club Bath, at 1012 McGee and opened The Human Observation Lab. At night, this downtown neighborhood was basically deserted except for the old bus station, a few dive bars, and street prostitution. The Lab’s proprietors rehabbed the building into a two story live/work space that evolved into a legendary live performance venue. Gorilla Theatre, Eyes Wide Open, Mongol Beach Party, The Cocktails, and DJ Ray Velasquez are just a few of the off-the-wall performers that evolved out of this underground venue.]

Kansas City based Tyson Schroeder is an illustrator and fine artist. Over the last 20 years he has created images for bands, galleries, theatre companies, book illusgtrations and covers, periodicals, and Zim’s Sauces. He has had works included in group and solo shows in Kansas City, Boston, Salem, Portland, Houston and Nashville. His work has been included in two museum shows about band posters, and he has created posters for some of his favorite bands, The Dresden Dolls, Unsane, Fiona Apple, and Season to Risk. Tyson He is also a musician, who plays in the bands Abandoned Bells, and Medicine Theory. Tyson has worked with puppets, sculpture, and improv performance, spoken word, and theatre as an actor, designer, and playwright. Tyson Schroeder joins us to talk about his new play, “Bastard” currently running through October 29 at the Living Room Theatre, 1818 McGee. BASTARD explores the challenges, sacrifices, and inevitable consequences of the choices made by an artist and his family. As an illustrator and fine artist working Tyson works in a wide range of media. From pen and ink to watercolor; hand cut prints to oils and sometimes even a bit of digital collage and editing.

Tyson focuses on painting and existential, surreal renderings of the human condition. He also applies this approach to music, writing, puppets, sculpture, and improv performance.

His editorial illustrations have appeared in The Pitch, and The Boston Globe.

There are numerous books that contain Tyson’s illustrations.

Bastard, was 7 years in the making. On Monday, February 20, 2017, Writer’s Den series at The Living Room Theatre held a special staged reading of Bastard. Earlier versions of the play were presented at Staged readings at The Fishtank.

Kansas City based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Teri Quinn is originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan. Teri moved to Kansas City in 2009 to study Clarinet Performance and Music Composition at the University Of Missouri Kansas City’s Conservatory of Music where she graduated in 2013. We first met Teri playing clarinet and guitar for Claire and the Crowded Stage. Teri is also a jewelry designer and her business is calle Rattlebone Design. Teri calls herself, “A Northern girl with a Southern heart living in the Mid-West.” Teri has also contributed experimental compositions for The Black House Collective, and last year Teri Quinn released her debut EP, Moons and Meltdowns, and is a member of the Kanssa City band, Abandoned Bells with Krysztof Nemeth and Tyson Schroeder. Kansas City based vocalist Julia Haile is a member of the band Hi-Lux. She has also performed and released music with bands The Buhs, and The Good Foot. This summer Julia Haile collaborated with Barclay Martin at KKFI Collaborations Live!, at The Folly Theatre. With her bands she has played in almost every venue in Kansas City, and she joins us to talk about her Live Solo Show, Julia Haile at Greenwood Social Hall, 1750 Belleview, KCMO on Friday, October 20, 6:30 to 8:30 pm with musicians: Ryan J. Lee, Ben Leifer & Peter Schlamb.

Also joining us is artist, Peregrine Honig who was born in San Francisco, and moved to Kansas City, at 17 to attend the Kansas City Art Institute. At age 22, Honig was the youngest living artist to have work acquired by the Whitney Museum of Art’s permanent collection. Peregrine appeared on season one of Bravo’s artist reality television show, Work of Art: The Next Great Artist, which aired in the summer of 2010. She owns a lingerie and swimwear boutique, Birdies, which opened in 2003, in the Crossroads, just down the sidewalk from YJ’s. Since March, Peregrine has been managing the Greenwood Social Hall, where she also lives. Originally the Greenwood Baptist Church. Peregrine earlier this year presented Calvin Arsenia in a live solo show, as well as concerts from Tango Lorca, plays from The Fishtank and Heidi Van, and other events.

Also joining us is Ross Redmon, a Kansas City based artist, originally from Greer, South Carolina after completing his studies on a full scholarship from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2015, he received a bachelors of Fine Arts with a double major in Ceramics and Art History. He has attended residencies, and worked as an artist in Denmark and Hungary. Ross Redmon’s new exhibition, “Ross Redmon: Passenger Migration,” opens Thursday, October 19 through November 30, at Greenwood Social Hall.

Julia has worked as a musician and vocalist in some of Kansas City’s favorite bands including The Good Foot, and The Buhs. She is also a member of Hi-Lux and this year Hi-Lux has released three original singles, compostions demonstrating the range of the band elements of soul, reggae and funk. Julia talked about the transition of moving from singing cover songs, from other bands and artists, and making them your own, and the new original music from Hi-Lux and the process of releasing these new tracks.

Greenwood Social Hall, 1750 Belleview, KCMO, is a gently renovated building in the Westside neighborhood, established in 1927. It is a private space dedicated to small public projects. It’s also Peregrine’s home.

Last year in Krystle Warren premiered this song and her other new songs from this album at the Middle of the Map Fest in a packed room at Californos in Westport and later at The Polsky Theatre for the Performing Arts Series of Johnsons County Community College. For this record Krystle decided to play every instrument and vocals & back up vocals, “playing bass, drums, lap steel, piano, guitar, and vocals directly to analog tape. She and Ben Kane recorded in Villetaneuse, France, a small town on the outskirts of Paris in a vintage 70s era studio that offered just the right, rich sound to suggest the musical foundation for the record, and to do justice to the duo’s carefully balanced arrangements.” On the radio show last year Krystle shared inspirations for this record, early gospel recordings, that crossed over into Jazz from Pharoah Sanders, Edwin Hawkins, and The Swan Silvertones. Originally from KC, Krystle learned to play the guitar by listening to Rubber Soul & Revolver from The Beatles. Krystle graduated from Paseo Arts Academy in 2001 and began her musical career in collaborating with area jazz and pop musicians. 15. The B-52’s – “Hero Worship”

[The B-52s were formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1976. The original line-up consisted of Fred Schneider (vocals), Kate Pierson (vocals, keyboards), Cindy Wilson (vocals, percussion), Ricky Wilson (lead guitar), and Keith Strickland (drums, rhythm guitar, keyboards). After Ricky Wilson’s death from AIDS in 1985, Strickland switched from drums to lead guitar. The band also added touring members for albums and live performances. The band is best known for their 1978 debut single “Rock Lobster”, and their pair of 1989 hits; “Love Shack” and “Roam”. Rooted in new wave and 1960s rock and roll, the group later straddled many genres, ranging from post-punk to pop rock. The “guy vs. gals” vocals of Schneider, Pierson, and Wilson, sometimes used in call and response style, and their unique guitar and keyboard driven instrumentation compose their trademark sound. The B-52’s were formed when vocalist Cindy Wilson, her older brother and guitarist Ricky, keyboardist and vocalist Kate Pierson, original drummer and percussionist Keith Strickland and cowbell player, poet and lead vocalist Fred Schneider held an impromptu jam session after sharing a tropical Flaming volcano drink at a Chinese restaurant in Athens, Georgia. Other ideas they had to name their band were the “Tina-Trons” and “Fellini’s Children.” When they first jammed, Strickland played guitar and Ricky Wilson played congas. They later played their first concert (with Wilson playing guitar) in 1977 at a Valentine’s Day party for their friends.]

[In 1967, two teenage friends, Bobby Nunn and Eugene Copland, were the stars of Mo Do Records, a Buffalo, New York, independent record label run by Bobby’s dad, William Nunn. As BOB & GENE they recorded several sides for the label along with other local gospel and soul artists and the dozen or so 45s on Mo Do. William Nunn’s dream of a Bob & Gene album would never be realized in his lifetime. 40 years later, Daptone Records pulled together these recordings into an album called BOB & GENE’S IF THIS WORLD WERE MINE, released in February 2007 on vinyl, and sold out quickly and has remained out-of-print ever since. It’s stature has grown over the years and is, these days, a desirable but hard-to-find record for fans of sweet soul. A decade later Daptone records is reissuing this record on vinyl, this time with TWO bonus cuts.]

6. Noname – “Casket Pretty”

[Noname was born Fatimah Warner on September 18, 1991. She is a poet and hip hop recording artist from the Bronzeville neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. She has been rapping and performing slam poetry in Chicago since 2010. In 2013 she gained wider recognition and acclaim following her appearance on the track “Lost” from Chance the Rapper’s mixtape Acid Rap. Telefone is centered around important telephone conversations that Noname has had over the years. Her rap speaks of black women’s pain and also highlights the struggles of growing up in Chicago. On December 18, she appeared with Chance the Rapper on Saturday Night Live.Chicago based Noname was recently featured on NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concert series.

Kansas City based vocalist Erin Keller is originally from Waukee, Iowa. She was born in August, in 1980. Erin has been singing on a professional level for 25 years. Erin sang with the internationally competitive Des Moines Children’s Choir for 5 years, and 3 years in All-State choir in high school, which helped her earn a voice performance degree from the Conservatory of Music at the University of Missouri in Kansas City, in 2002. Erin peforms with the Grammy-Award winning Kansas City Chorale. Erin has also worked as a featured soloist with Owen Cox Dance Ensemble, New Ear, KC jazz musicians, the big band at University of Colorado, a West African Highlife Ensemble, the Balkan brass band Gora Gora Orkestar. Erin also has experience writing her own music, singing in rock, folk, and free improv settings and she more recently earned a Master’s in Music Education from the University of Colorado at Boulder. In Colorado she worked for two years in public schools teaching music and moved back to KC to continue her career as musician and educator. In April Erin released her new album, “Distracted,” and has been playing live shows while also being upfront and honest about her recent cancer diagnosis where she has received multiple rounds of chemo treatments.

We just heard Distracted the title track of Erin’s debut solo album that came out this Spring. The song “Distracted” was written by Erin Keller.

Distracted was produced by Chad Meise.

After the album was released Erin was diagnosed with cancer and began treatments.

UMKC Conservatory of Music brought Erin to Kansas City, where she made friends and built collaborations with KC Civic Opera, KC Choral, New Ear, Own Cox Dance Ensemble.

Erin decided to get her Masters Degree and left KC for The University of Colorado at Boulder, and then later Denver, where she worked in public schools.

While in Colorado Erin studied Ethno musicology and sang with a High Life Ensemble, and also with the Balkan brass band Gora Gora Orkestar.

[“The Tea Leaf Prophecy (Lay Down Your Arms)” was written by Joni Mitchell and recorded for her 1988 album, Chalk Mark in a Rainstorm. Cris Williamson, a huge fan of Joni Mitchell, brought the song into the recording sessions for Cris & Holly. This album was the very first time Holly Near and Cris Williamson had recorded together after 30 years in the music business, specifically in Women’s Music. Originally undertaken to create a souvenir CD for sale at Near & Williamson’s joint concerts Originally the album was be a greatest hits package, but along the way they created several new songs and new covers with John Bucchino’s accompaniment on piano. Produced by Cris Williamson & Holly Near. Recorded at Skywalker Sound, Nicasio, CA. Cris Williamson was born in 1947 in Deadwood, South Dakota. She has released 25 studio albums, 1 reissue, 2 greatest hits collections, and 2 live albums. During a radio interview in Washington, D.C. in 1973, Williamson suggested that a record label aimed at gay women would be a good idea. The independent label Olivia Records was founded the next day. Olivia Records released Williamson’s The Changer and the Changed in 1975, which became one of the best-selling independent releases of all time. As William Ruhlmann of AllMusic writes: “The Changer and the Changed was to women’s music what Michael Jackson’s Thriller was to the music industry in general in the mid-’80s, an album that sold far beyond the perceived size of the market, more than 100,000 copies in its first year of release. Eventually, it reportedly sold more than 500,000 copies, which would make it a gold album. Williamson went on to record more than a dozen more albums with Olivia Records, then after its demise formed her own label, Wolf Moon Records. This helped to set the pace for other recording artists who found it difficult to work with the major record labels. Cris Williamson’s 25 studio album, Motherland will be released October 5, on Harvest Moon Records. Holly Near was born June 6, 1949 in Ukiah, California. She is an American singer-songwriter, actress, teacher, and activist. After starting high school in 1963, Holly Near began singing with the Freedom Singers, a folk group modeled on The Weavers. In 1968, she enrolled in the Theatre Arts program at UCLA; that year, she attended her first Vietnam War peace vigil and joined Another Mother for Peace. Holly Near’s professional career began in 1969 with a part on the television show The Mod Squad, which was followed by appearances in other shows, such as Room 222, All in the Family, and The Partridge Family. She also appeared in Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five, and Minnie and Moskowitz, and had a prominent role in the 1991 film Dogfight. In 1970, Near was a cast member of the Broadway musical Hair. Following the Kent State shootings in May of that year, the entire cast staged a silent vigil in protest. The song, “It Could Have Been Me” (which was released on A Live Album, 1974), was her heartfelt response to the shootings. In 1971, she joined the FTA (Free The Army) Tour, an anti-Vietnam War road show of music, comedy, and plays, organized by antiwar activist Fred Gardner and actors Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland. In 1972, Near founded an independent record label called Redwood Records (now defunct) to produce and promote music by “politically conscious artists from around the world”. During her long career in folk and protest music, Holly Near has worked with Ronnie Gilbert, Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, Bernice Johnson Reagon, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Meg Christian, Joan Baez, Phil Ochs, and Harry Belafonte. Holly Near has been recognized many times for her work for social change, including honors from the ACLU, the National Lawyers Guild, the National Organization for Women, NARAS, Ms. Magazine (Woman of the Year), and the Legends of Women’s Music Award. Vandalia, Illinois, based acclaimed singer-songwriter Summer Osborne has been touring the United States and Canada wowing audiences with her original songs and powerful and charismatic voice. Summer’s eighth album, As I Am, was released in 2013 and her ninth album, Spiritual Revolution, was released in late 2016. Summer Osborne has played at National Women’s Music Festival, SXSW, and Pridefests in St. Louis, Phoenix, Fairbanks, Tacoma, Vancouver, Halifax, Lexington Kentucky, Springfield, Columbia and Memphis. Summer first joined us on Wednesday MidDay Medley on October 2, 2013. Since then she has been touring all over, including the National Women’s Music Festival.

Mark first met Summer at the HRC Battle of the bands in 2011 where she blew away the judges & the crowd with her powerful stage presence and performance.

Summer started singing at the age of 4 when her mom, a teacher, encouraged her onto the stage. Summer Osborne lists her Mother, Carol Osborne as her biggest influence.

Summer plays guitar, and piano and keyboards, among other instruments, and has released a nine full length albums.

Summer Osborne used to work in education with middle school students.

Since deciding to focus on her musical career (performing and writing) full time in 2009, Summer has remained on tour, doing shows at venues and festivals far and wide. Summer played at National Women’s Music Festival in 2012 and 2014, and SXSW in 2012 and 2013. She has played music at Pridefests all over the Mid-West US & Canada, including: Pridefest St. Louis; Phoenix Pride – Phoenix, AZ; Fairbanks Pride – Fairbanks, AL; Tacoma Pride – Tacoma, WA; Vancouver Pride – British Columbia, Canada; Mid-MO Pride – Columbia, MO; Halifax Pride – Nova Scotia, Canada; Mid-South Pride – Memphis, TN; Springfield Pride – Springfield, MO; Kentuckiana Pride – Lexington, KY; and Metro East Pride – Belleville, IL.
