3. Ivory Blue – “Elite Dreamland”

[KC based singer songwriter and rock & roller, Ivory Blue is currently in the studio putting together a new full length 10-song album called “Compound Love” for release in 2020. Ivory Blue’s debut EP, Ready Get Set was released in June 2015 and had wide radio airplay on this show and multiple radio and television stations in Kansas City and across the country. In 2017 Ivory was among 1800 bands that competed in neXt2Rock. Ivory won local & regional challenges and advanced to nationals in Los Angeles to win the top prize. Ivory Blue has played Crossroads Music festival, The Middle of the Map Festival, The Westport Roots Festival, the KCPT Screening of “Real Boy” at The Kansas City Public Library. Born in 1986 in Peoria Illinois, and given up for adoption at the age of four, it was difficult to find trust in people after living with eight different foster families. Running away at 15, Ivory moved from Indiana to Oklahoma and eventually ended up in Seattle. In 2011 Ivory moved to Kansas City, and has became a part of new family. Ivory will be our guest on WMM on April 29.]

[Rosé Perez is Carrie Wallen on guitar & keyboards, 2007 Balquier on bass & drums, and Lina Žemaitė on drums & bass. Rosé Perez recently released a new video for their song “Placenta Agenda” from their EP split with the band Period BOMB. The Rosé Perez tracks for this split were recorded, mixed, and mastered by Jametatone at The Infoaming Vortex. Rosé Perez will be with us on WMM on April 8.]

[2nd album from David Muhammad, social studies teacher at Shawnee Mission East High and martial arts instructor who wanted to be a rapper since his own high school days at Shawnee Mission South. He released his debut album, “The Hanging Trees,” Dec. 9, 2016, and the EP “11:15,” Nov. 15, 2018, and 11 singles.]

7. GHOSTY – “Prodigal Son”

[New EP from the Lawrence / Kansas City based band GHOSTY. The band was able to finally get back to finishing 3 tracks that were started in 2014. Andrew Connor on guitar & keyboards, & vocals, Bill Belzer on drums & percussion, Ross Brown on guitar & keyboards, and Mike Nolte – bass. Basic tracks were recorded in July 2014 at Westend, Kansas City, KS. Engineered by Mike Nolte. The songs were written by Andrew Connor. Mixed by Ross Brown and mastered by Mike Nolte at Eureka Mastering. Cover artwork by Paul Browning. This follows the band’s critically acclaimed 2013 album GHOSTY on High Dive Records.]

8. Una Walkenhorst – “Pretty Face”

[2nd single from Una’s upcoming EP, “Woman of the Year,” to be released April 16. 25 year old Una Walkenhorst is a singer/songwriter from Kansas City. Una told KCUR FM that her father was one of the people who made her love music. But having a famous father can be challenging: “I knew that if I started my music career here I would have a lot of opportunities, but not all of them would be because of my music. They would be because I am someone’s daughter,” Walkenhorst says. Loading up her 97 Honda Civic, Una then spent a year traveling across North America promoting her music and connecting with listeners one-on-one. She ended up living in New Orleans. Una Walkenhorst is the youngest daughter of Bob Walkenhorst, a founding member of The Rainmakers, which had national and international hits in the 1980s and 90s, and continue to this day touring and recording new music. In January of 2018 Una Walkenhorst returned home to Kansas City from New Orleans. Over the past several years, Una and Bob had performed together at selected events, including Folk Alliance International. In 2018 the father and daughter duo decided to record an album together, where they split the difference, taking turns as songwriters for the album’s songs, written individually, and recorded together, with beautiful harmonies. The Pitch is a free alternative newspaper distributed in the Kansas City Metropolitan Area, including Lawrence and Topeka, Kansas. While known for its investigative stories of the local government, it also covers local sports stories, restaurants, events, visual art, and concerts.

It was started in July 1980 as the “Penny Pitch” which was a monthly handout at Penny Lane Record Shop in the Westport area of Kansas City. The original editors were Dwight Frizzell and Jay Mandeville.

Village Voice Media bought The Pitch in 1999, and sold the paper in 2011 to SouthComm Communications. In 2017 The Pitch was sold to Stephanie Carey and Adam Carey.

DeMaur got much of his musical influence and inspiration singing in his late uncle’s church in Kansas City, Missouri during his teenage years. During this time, he knew that singing would be a part of his everyday life. DeMaur performs with his band, The Movement, throughout the Kansas City, Missouri area.]

We are talking with KC based singer-songwriter, Amy Marcus who in January released her new single, “Sweater.” We just premiered another new single, “Heartsick Movement.”

Amy wrote “Heartsick” a year into recovering from a relapse in an eating disorder she has dealt with since she was 11. She is passionate about speaking out about de-stigmatizing mental health issues, including eating disorders.

Amy also works for Sura Eats, a good friend’s Korean restaurant located in The Crossroads. Amy does all the photography and social media and marketing for Sura Eats.

[James Hoskins on guitar & vocals, Samuel Hoskins on drums, Chris Stuart on bass guitar, Jeremiah James Gonzales on guitar & vocals. Since their beginning in 1999, Elevator Division have received praise from critics and fans alike. They have been compared to U2, R.E.M., The Cure, Radiohead, and The Smashing Pumpkins. This is probably because, like the aformentioned bands, Elevator Division’s music has a classic, timeless quality to it and transcends mere entertainment. One critic noticed this and commented by saying, “Songs like this remind me why music matters.” Another critic even described Elevator Division’s music as having the ability to “change one’s entire outlook.” Whatever the response from critics and fans, Elevator Division have not let it affect their work ethic. [Indian classical violinist and mathematician Purnaprajna Bangere has created a new musical syntax based on a geometric framework that integrates Indian classical music and Western music, encompassing elements from classical, blues and jazz. The result opens new frontiers with exciting new sounds and structures that transcend known genres of music. Most of his current compositional work of Purna is with multi Grammy winning director of Turtle Island String Quartet David Balakrishnan. Joining Purna and David to complete the ensemble are bass virtuoso Jeff Harshbarger from Kansas City and the talented Amit Kavthekar from Boston on Tabla, with special guest Robert Walzel on clarinet (track 6). From Rick Hellman’s feature piece in KU News: “After decades of playing the violin and years as a math professor at the University of Kansas, Purnaprajna Bangere has achieved an artistic breakthrough that synthesizes his musical and mathematical skills, creating an entirely new approach to music he calls “metaraga.”

“…the title Bangere gave to the debut recording by his Purna Loka Ensemble, which is generating critical praise, radio airplay and even sales and chart action.

“In 2008, the Turtle Island String Quartet tplayed the Lied Center of Kansas and that led to Bangere’s crucial meeting with the two-time Grammy-winning leader of that group, David Balakrishnan. Balakrishnan has now become Bangere’s collaborator, co-writing four of the “Metaraga” album’s five original tracks and playing counterpart to Bangere’s lead violin lines throughout.”

Amy Marcus

At 11:00 Mark welcomes KC based singer-songwriter, Amy Marcus who in January released her new single, “Sweater” and will premiere another new single on the show. Amy Marcus was born and raised in Kansas City. She has been writing songs since she was a child. In 2016 she released her debut 5-song EP “Brave” and followed that up with the single, “I Want More For My Daughters” in 2017. Amy Marcus studied photography at the Kansas City Art Institute. She is a mother of three and works as a professional photographer and chef. Amy is currently working on a new EP set for release this year.

Purna Loka Ensemble

At 11:30 Jeff Harshbarger shares music from Purna Loka Ensemble‘s debut “Metaraga” released though Origin Records on January 17, 2020. Along with Purna Loka, Jeff Harshbarger has recorded and performed with: Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Bobby Watson, Forever Tango, Milt Abel, Tango Lorca, Krystle Warren, Brad Cox, Ghosty, and The People’s Liberation Big Band. Jeff is a co-founder of Tzigane Music, an artist-run record label, and is the curator of Jeff Harshbarger Presents: An Alternative Jazz Series, promoting new improvised music in KC. Jeff has received The Kennedy Center’s Betty Carter Fellowship, the Steans Institute Fellowship, and the 2015 Charlotte Street Generative Performing Artist Award. Manchester, England born Danny McGaw released one of our favorite recordings of 2012 with his album “Eccles Road.” Since that recording he has been playing with drummer Jason Jones and bassist Dan Hines (of the famed Lawrence band Paw), Chad Brothers on guitar, and musician, producer, and member of the famed duo Truckstop Honeymoon, Mike West, who was initially brought in to produce the group’s debut recording, and ended up becoming the fifth member of the band. The result is: Wells the Traveler, and a debut recording called “One for the Dreamers” to be released in a CD Release Show at The Brick, Friday, August 23, with 40 Watt Dreams. Danny McGaw, was a pro-soccer player, turned street singer, who played the sidewalks of Santa Monica, before landing in Kansas City. Danny’s adventurous spirit was a good match for Mike West. Danny talked about how he met Mike West and they agreed to do this project. It was the muddy campground of the Walnut Valley Bluegrass festival, where Danny met Mike West.

Jason Jones talked about how he came to be in the band with Dan Hines on bass & Chad Brothers on guitar.

Mike West, is a veteran banjo player, respected producer, one half of Trucktop Honeymoon with his wife Katie, who we played at the start of the show with 40 Watt Dreams. We’ve recently featured Mike’s work as producer on the Betse Ellis release, “High Moon Order” and his collaborations with other musicians including Kasey Rausch. Mike West lived in Manchester England in the 1980s, touring with indie rock bands of that time.

Danny Mcgaw talked about the name Wells The Traveler, and how Wells was a lost family name that his father wanted to give him as a middle name.

“One for the Dreamers” was recorded at the 9th Ward Pickin’ Parlor in Lawrence. The chemistry between the musicians in the studio was extraordinary. Dynamic arrangements combined with expressive vocal performances to produce an album full of subtlety, power and raw feeling. “After 3 days of recording, we realized we had experienced something exceptional ,” says Danny McGaw, “It was like a meditation, like a kind of church.”

The music of Wells the Traveler ranges from anthemic to bare and intimate, from garage rock to folk, searing electric guitars to mandolin and banjo. It is a rare meeting of British rock and American acoustic traditions in finely crafted songs, sung with honesty and heart.

Experimental electronic musical artist, Jesse Bartmess who pefoms under the moniker, Sinple joined us to talk about his recent recordings and to play LIVE in our 90.1 FM Studios.

Jesse talked about how he started making experimental, electronic music.

“Wallpaper” was released in late April, and followed up with “June Demos” a 10 track release that came out in mid june, followed by the EP “Dust.” Jesse and mark talked about how creating music electronically and making the music available digitally seems to allow for a more accelerated production of music.

People think of electronic music as a product of the studio, but Jesse talked about performing live, and described the experience as Bliss.

Jesse Bartmess went to school at Shawnee Mission North, and is a big fan of music and a supporter of the local scene.

“Union Voice” is the first track on “When the troubles come.” Mark talked about how in the past year Wednesday MidDay Medley has featured KC based punk bands: The Bad ideas, and members of the bands, Hip Shot Killer, and Smash The State, and surveyed music from the Center of The City Festival. mark and Shawn talked about how the genre of punk music in KC is not afraid to get political, and deal lyrically and musically with the problems of the day including unemployment, war, gay rights.

The new Red Kate LP contains eleven honest, high-energy punk rock and roll numbers handcrafted in hi-fidelity sound to carry you through the work week and into the weekend.

We first met The Clementines as a duo Tim Jenkins & Nicole Springer when they played LIVE on our show last year on April 25. Nicole Springer grew up in Oak Grove, MO, and graduated H.S. in 2004. She studied Music-Vocal/Choral at Missouri State University, in Springfield, MO, and studied Special Education with Music at Metropolitan MO CC, in KCMO. Tim Jenkins grew up in KC. Studied at UMKC. He has been playing music for over 10 years. Last year veteran drummer Stephanie Williams joined the band onDrums, along with Travis Earnshaw who joined the band on Bass.

Bill Belzer has been playing music in Kansas City since the late 1980s. Early bands include: Mongol Beach Party and Grumpy. Bill toured with Uncle Tupelo, Michelle Shocked, and many others. Bill has played drums with many of Matt Pryor’s projects including, The New Amsterdams. Bill also performs as a solo singer songwriter and recently released a solo EP of his own songs. [Originally released riding a wave of global interest in Afrobeat at the turn of the decade, Strut’s original Nigeria 70 set broke the mould for African compilations when it first surfaced in September 2001. Digging deep into Nigeria’s archives, the collection showcased for the first time on CD the stunning variety of fusions recorded across the country during the ‘70s, from national icons like Fela Kuti and Sunny Ade to lesser known young bands like Monomono and Ofo The Black Company. Across 2CDs, the compilation touches on the many subtle regional variations of the time – from the East, the Igbo groove of The Funkees, from the Hausa North, the Arabic flow of Bala Miller and, from Lagos, the hard-hitting Yoruba soul of Segun Bucknor. The set also made available many rare cuts on CD for the first time including obscure soundtrack ‘The Quest’ by Afro Cult Foundation and one of the most requested DJ tracks on the album, Shina Williams’ hypnotic Afro disco classic, ‘Agboju Logun’.]

[5th album by Graham Central Station, a funk band named after founder Larry Graham (formerly of Sly & the Family Stone). The band’s origins date from when Santana guitarist Neal Schon formed the band Azteca along with Larry Graham (bass guitar) and Gregg Errico (drums), both from Sly & the Family Stone, and Pete Sears (keyboards), from Hot Tuna and Jefferson Starship. Santana bass guitar player Tom Rutley would move into the bass spot with Azteca. That band, like Santana with heavy Latin influences, would eventually morph into Graham Central Station, while Schon would form Journey. The invention of electric slap bass is attributed by many (including Victor Wooten) to Graham, which influenced many musical genres, such as funk, R&B and disco. GCS’s biggest hit was “Your Love”, which charted at number 9 in 1975. The group also integrated gospel music into their repertoire, and played with the dichotomy between the funk/rock star image and the “sanctified” gospel group image. Some of their recordings feature the Tower of Power horn section. In 2011, Graham Central Station opened for Prince on Prince’s “Welcome 2 America” tour.]

[Follow up to her 1967 debut More Than a New Discovery. Three Dog Night took “Eli’s Comin'” to No. 10, while The 5th Dimension went to No. 3 with “Stoned Soul Picnic” and No. 13 with “Sweet Blindness”. Six songs from Eli and the Thirteenth Confession are included in the ballet Quintet performed by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Laura Nyro was born Oct. 18, 1947 – and died April 8, 1997. A songwriter, singer, and pianist, her style was a hybrid of Brill Building-style NYC pop, jazz, gospel, R&B, show tunes, rock and soul. In 2012, Laura Nyro was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.]

12. Michael Jackson – “Workin’ Day and Night (Original Demo)”

[5th studio album, released on Epic Records, after Jackson’s critically well-received film performance in The Wiz Jackson and Quincy Jones had become friends, and Jones agreed to work with Jackson on his next studio album. Jackson collaborated with a number of other writers and performers such as Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder and Rod Temperton. Five singles were released from the album. Three of the singles had music videos released. Jackson wrote three of the songs himself, including the Platinum-certified lead single, “Don’t Stop ’til You Get Enough”. It was his first solo release under Epic Records, the label he would record on until his death in 2009. Several critics observed that Off the Wall was crafted from funk, disco-pop, soft rock, jazz and pop ballads. The record won the singer his first Grammy Award since the early 1970s. 13. Bobby Charles – “Grow Too Old”

[Born as Robert Charles Guidry in Abbeville, Louisiana and grew up listening to Cajun music. At the age of 15, he heard Fats Domino, and that “changed (his) life forever.” Charles helped to pioneer the south Louisiana musical genre known as swamp pop. His compositions include the hits “See You Later, Alligator”, which he initially recorded himself as “Later Alligator”, and “Walking to New Orleans”, written for Fats Domino. Because of his south Louisiana-influenced R&B vocal style, Charles has often been thought to be black, when in fact he is white. On November 26, 1976, Charles was invited to play with The Band at their farewell concert, The Last Waltz. Charles played “Down South in New Orleans”, with the help of Dr. John and The Band. He co-wrote the song “Small Town Talk” with Rick Danko of The Band. “Promises, Promises (The Truth Will Set You Free)” was co-written with Willie Nelson. Charles died on January 14, 2010.]

[English pop/rock band, formed in 1979 in Kirkby, near Liverpool, with a core of vocalist/keyboardist Gary Daly and guitarist Eddie Lundon. Their output was pop music similar in style to that of New Wave but with strong similarities to the post-punk movement of the early 1980s, namely inclusion of a broader range of musical influences and occasional flirtation with political commentary. Throughout their career, China Crisis had ten hit singles between August 1982 and January 1987 and six albums, as well as commercial success in Western Europe, Australia and the Americas.]

In the ‘70s, it wasn’t just James Brown who influenced the musicians playing in the nightspots of Lagos – the loose-structured and elongated jams that he was pioneering in America had been a part of Nigerian music much longer than that. This album is the sound of Cuban-heeled and Micro-minied Lagos youth soaking up the sound of the American discotheque and putting their own inimitable twist on the proceedings.]

Their collaborative self-titled album was released on October 2, 2012. Allmusic’s Tim Sendra called it “a rather stunning debut”. Parker played guitar, featuring his distinctive spacey, phased guitar sound with Prochet’s dreamy vocals, and also produced the album.]

[Debut release from Rhye, a musical duo based in Los Angeles, California, made up of: Mike Milosh, from Canada, and Robin Hannibal, from Denmark. Milosh had previously released albums as Milosh, and Hannibal had previously recorded as Quadron. Recorded in Copenhagen and Los Angeles, their sound brings together elements of their modern cultural aesthetics mixed with an homage to classic sensibilities; lush strings and melodies intertwined with simple electronic production and soft and sultry vocals – a marriage between refined decadence and modern elegance.

21. Vic Chesnutt – “Flirted With You All My Life”

[James Victor “Vic” Chesnutt (Nov. 12, 1964 – Dec. 25, 2009) a singer-songwriter from Athens, Georgia. His first album, Little, was released in 1990, but his breakthrough to commercial success didn’t come until 1996 with the release of Sweet Relief II: Gravity of the Situation, a tribute album of mainstream artists covering his songs. Chesnutt released 17 albums during his career, including two produced by Michael Stipe, and a 1996 release on Capitol Records, About to Choke. His musical style has been described as a “skewed, refracted version of Americana that is haunting, funny, poignant, and occasionally mystical, usually all at once”. Injuries from a 1983 car accident left him partially paralyzed; he used a wheelchair and had limited use of his hands.]

The vocals are shared between Daniel & Boeckner. The album was recorded in Los Angeles in a backyard studio, with producer Nick Launay in March through May 2012.]

On Tuesday, February 19, a huge natural-gas explosion, in Kansas City’s west edge of the Country Club Plaza, destroyed the beloved restaurant JJ’s, reducing the area to a crater. 16 people were injured, including many JJ’s employees.

One JJ’s server, Megan Cramer, was killed in the blast. Megan Cramer had lived here in KC for over 26 years. She received her law degree from UMKC and started one of UMKC’s very first LGBT Student groups. As well as working with KC Human Rights Ordinance Project in the early 1990s, Megan was active in many other equality projects. Megan will be greatly missed by her Family from Springfield MO, and by her JJ’s Family, and all of us in the KC LGBT & Allied Communities, who have known and admired Megan for many years. A memorial service for Megan Cramer will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, March 4, at Community Christian Church, 4601 Main St., Kansas City, MO.

After five years of being nominated, The ACB’s won the 2012 Pitch Music Award for Best Pop Band. Their songs have been featured on MTV’s The Inbetweeners, and on Daytrotter. Their lead single, “Ocean,” released in late 2012, moved Popmatters to declare The ACB’s as one of its “Best Hopes to Break Out in 2013.” The ACB’s play a Record Release Show, Fri, Mar. 1, 7:00 PM, at recordBar, 1020 Westport Rd, with Fourth Of July. The ACB’s formed in 2006 in KC. In 2007 they released their self titled solo debut, went on tour, and played with The Get Up Kids, Republic Tigers. Music Editor of The Pitch, David Hudnall wrote: ‘The ACBs began 2010 as a broken band, but closed out the year as a super -group of sorts. After half the band moved to L.A., frontman Konnor Ervin & bassist Bryan McGuire regrouped, adding Andrew Connor from Ghosty and Kyle Rausch from Abracadabras. They released their first album in 4 years. On Stona Rosa, the ACBs moved beyond the power pop sound they’d cultivated on their debut and settled into a stranger, stonier, lonelier space. Ervin’s couching his inventive melodies in more tender, artful compositions, and the band has the chops & confidence to sell it. It’s a good look on them.’

Andrew Connor’s band Ghosty recorded one of our favorite releases of 2012.
Even though they weren’t officially released, the demos of Kyle’s band The I’ms, now known as Shy Boys, were included in our top ten Best Recordings of 2011.

Little Leaves, The ACBs 3rd full-length was inspired by Connor Ervin’s landscaping job.

Mark read from biographical information on The ACB’s where it was written that the band is influenced by the music of Michael Jackson, early Beatles, Matthew Sweet, and modern bands: Wolfdeerhorse and Bear Eyes.

The information went on to talk about how the The ACB’s are also influenced by an inability to interact comfortably with the opposite sex, fear of hair loss, male friendships that have been described by outsiders as bordering on homoerotic, and the lingering effects of their deeply Midwestern religious upbringing.

Konnor talked about his process of song writing and how he records his ideas on a small dictaphone for reference later.

The band talked about how they balance the connections between The ACB’s, Ghosty, and Shy Boys with the shows, recording process, and rehearsals.

The ACB’s have a brand new video for your new single “Television.” The video was directed by Brook Linder (SSLYBY, Free Energy), the clip’s grainy look is inspired by the grind house cinema of the ’70s. There was a disembodied beauty to the performances.

10. Christopher Owens – “Here We Go”

[Best known as the frontman & songwriter for the band Girls, Owens was born in Miami, Florida in 1979. At the time of his birth, both his parents were members of the Children of God traveling religious community. Shortly before Owens’ birth his infant brother Steven died of pneumonia due to the reluctance of the church’s members to seek professional medical assistance. In 1981, Owens’ family left the United States to travel with the church and he lived “all over Asia” until he was ten, before traveling throughout Western Europe. Owens learned to play guitar in his early teens and would perform covers of Everly Brothers and Fleetwood Mac songs on the street. At the age of sixteen, while living in Slovenia, he left the church and followed his sister to Amarillo, Texas. Owens spent his first four years in Texas working as a nighttime shelf stocker in Albertson’s grocery store as well as in various restaurants. In 2001 he met artist and oil tycoon Stanley Marsh 3, who hired him first as a lawn mower and later as a personal assistant. After nine years in Texas, Owens moved to San Francisco, California with the intention of becoming a “famous painter”. There he met musicians Matt Fishbeck and Ariel Pink and joined their band as a touring guitarist. In 2007, Owens was inspired to form his own band and began writing songs for the first time. In September 2012, it was announced by Saint Laurent Paris (formerly Yves Saint Laurent) that Owens would be the face of their Spring/Summer campaign.]

Writer, Director, Performer, Stephanie Roberts, was the winner of the 2010 Charlotte Street Foundation’s Generative Performing Artist Award. She is Assistant Professor of Physical Theatre for the UMKC’s MFA Professional Actor Training Program. She has toured nationally and abroad, and taught and directed works for the Seattle Repertory Theatre as well Cornish College of the Arts. Her Ensemble-generated works include “Meanwhile” for UMKC’s Undergraduate Theatre Department, “Tallahassee” for KC Fringe Festival, and “Boom! An International Lost and Found Marching Band” for KC Fringe Festival, and The St. Mane in Lanesboro, MN. In 2010 she created a piece with graduate theater students called “Slammed! KC Speaks Out About the Recession,” based on interviews with Kansas Citians. She received an Inspiration Award from ArtsKC, to development of “The Mask of the Broken Heart,” a one-woman mask play which premiered at the Fishtank Performance Studio. She holds a BFA in Acting from Cornish, and an MFA in Ensemble Based Physical Theatre from Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre. Stephanie Roberts joins us today to discuss her work as writer and director of the new UMKC Theatre production, Eat This! “KC Chews on the Politics of Food,” with preview performances March 2 – 5, Opening on March 6, and continuing through March 10, in Studio 116, of the Olson Performing Arts Center, at UMKC.

Stephanie talked about how she believes that our society is in the middle of a food movement, and many people don’t realize that this movement is happening, but that this movement is very politicized.

Stephanie and other company members visited farms, elementary schools, slaughterhouses and processing plants. You interviewed urban farmers, and nutritionists who plan school lunch menus, teachers and students.

Stephanie told The KC Star that: “It’s important (to me) that it’s not journalism because we’re putting our own stamp on it,” she said. “Most of the interviews I do are at a coffee shop. A lot of the people we interview are more introverted and soft-spoken. We, as actors and theater-makers, need to bring that inner passion out.”

“And also, because it’s theater, there needs to be conflict. We used the audio recordings for inspiration for characters. So it’s not by any means an impersonation. But it’s important that we get it right so we don’t misrepresent the people we’re portraying.”

Stephanie told Bob Trussell, in the KC Star that, “We found that most people are not connected to where their food comes from, and we became curious about that,” she said. “What goes into our food? Not just the ingredients, but where did it come from? How do you eat it? Where do you buy it? Who brought it to you?”

Stephanie discussed how all of the interview assembled, virtually hours and hours of narrative, were edited into a stage show.

Stephanie talked about how there are 60 characters are in the show.

Stephanie talked about the technical abilities of Studio 116 known as a black box theatre, in the Performing Arts Center. The show will use video projections, special lighting and sound, and a huge set change between act one and act two

By day, Matt Beat is a middle school social studies teacher. By night, the multi-instrumentalist writes and records songs about Presidents. He recorded them chronologically. The final volume of recordings features: Franklin Roosevelt to George W. Bush. “The Presidents of the United States of America (Volume 3)” was just released appropriately on Feb. 18. It was produced by Matt Beat, with all music and lyrics by Matt Beat, and all recorded performances by Matt Beat.

Matt Beat formed The Electric Needle Room with his brother. The two of them have lived in separate cities for many years. They email their music back and forth in collaboration.

Matt uses his songs to help teach to 7th and 8th grade middle school students in his social studies classes.

9:20 – Interview with Patrick Alexander

Patrick Alexander is a multidisciplinary artist who incorporates collage, painting and drawing with original sound compositions, developed organically, and often exhibited as a site-specific installations. His work has been exhibited in Los Angeles, and locally at The Telephone Booth Gallery, Next Space, Fahrenheit, H&R Block Artspace, Leedy-Voulkos, to name a few. As a curator he was owner operator of Locus Solis Art Gallery, and served as Art Gallery and Theatre Director the YWCA of Greater Kansas City Kansas. Since 1997 he has operated a mobile sound system for special events and clubs and has DJ’d (under the alias Fat Sal) locally and nationally. He specializes in rare vinyl recordings of soul, funk, Dub, reggae, latin, jazz, early hip hop and dance music.

As Facilities Manager for the Charlotte Street Foundation, Pat is responsible for the day to day management, operation, and maintenance of Urban Culture Project exhibition and performance spaces and Studio Residency Program facilities. Patrick Alexander joined us by phone to discuss Urban Culture Project – Studio Residency Open Studios Weekend, March 8-9.

The Foundation through the Urban Culture Project operates 3 different gallery spaces, and also offers studios, in downtown office buildings, for visual and performing artists.

12. (17.) Tame Impala – “Apocalypse Dreams”

[Trio from Perth, Australia, a psychedelic rock project of Kevin Parker. The band came to prominence in 2010 with the release of their debut album, Innerspeaker. In late 2010, Parker ran into some problems with the new album, he had all his demos, half of the new album, on his iPod, and he had a hole in his bag, and it fell out somewhere between Amsterdam and London. The demos were later found and returned to Parker who relocated to Paris in 2011, for the mixing of the album, with help of famed producer Dave Fridmann.]

[Jason Beers, Bernie Dugan, Marco Pascolini & Elaine McMilian. Members of the band joined us on WMM on June 20. Bernie Dugan told the story, with an almost perfect vocal interpretation, of how guitarist – Marco Pascolini asked band founder – Jason Beers, if he could join the band. Bernie Dugan also plays drums w/ The Quivers, and Cher UK. Marco Pascolini, considered one of the best guitarists in the area, played guitar with Expassionates, currently he also plays w/ Mr. Marcos V-7, and Dead Voices. Elaine McMilian has performed with several KC area bands including: Easterday, Swinging Six, and last year she released a solo recording.]

16. (13.) The Cave Girls – “I Said Wow!”

[TCG played LIVE on our April 18 Wednesday MidDay Medley. The Cave Girls include: Robin Campbell, Sara Teasley, & Stephanie Williams. Their debut recording was produced by Pat Tomek at Largely Studios in KC. Robin Campbell was formerly the lead singer of The Last Call Girls. When Robin Campbell was on our show in April she shared with us her love of Loretta Lynn, and gave me a special Loretta Lynn coloring book.

17. (12.) The B’Dinas – “Five-Day Weekend”

[The B’Dinas joined us LIVE on our February 22, Wednesday MidDay Medley. Katy Guillen (guitar/vocals/harmonica), Meredith McGrade (guitar/vocals), Peter Lawless (bass/vocals/saxophone), Katelyn Boone (keys/vocals/bass), and Tess Jehle (drums). The B’Dinas are a Super Group of 5 amazing musicians who are each involved in at least one or two or three other bands or performing entities and/or troupes. They all write and sing. Multi-instrumentalists, Artists all, collaborators, curators, students and teachers. Part-2, of our 4-week special: The 112 Best Recordings of 2012. Based on the playlists of Wednesday MidDay Medley. In 2012 we’ve played over 700 of New & Local Releases, we’ve presented dozens of LIVE in-studio performances from area performers, and we’ve interviewed over 150 local and national guests. 70% of the recordings on our list were locally produced. 1. (84.) Black Moth Super Rainbow – “Windshield Smasher”
from: Cobra Juicy / Rad Cult / October 22, 2012
[5th, and some say finest, album to date from the psychedelic-electronic-experimental band from Pittsburgh. Their sound is characterized by their use of analog electronic instruments including the vocoder, Rhodes piano, Novatron. Little is known about band members who’re all something of an enigma, keeping their true identities hidden behind monikers like: Tobacco, Bullsmear, The Seven Fields of Aphelion Fields. One critic described their music this way: “Imagine that disco put on a blonde wig, a denim jacket, and roller-skates; then proceeded to do a considerable quantity of acid and dance around in the abandoned roller rink in your hometown.”]

2. (83.) Gemini Revolution – “Other Side of Yesterday”
from: Gemini Revolution / Upstairs Recordings / September 20, 2012
[This year they also released: EPs: “Informal Revolution” “Sizuka.” Gemini Revolution is: Dedric Moore, Delaney Moore, Mika Tayana. They were asked to perform at this year’s Pop Montreal Festival in September 20. Upstairs Recordings of Vancouver, Canada, released their full-length debut to coincide with the festival.]

3. (82.) Alt-J – “Fitzpleasure”
from: An Awesome Wave / Infectious Records / September 18, 2012
[Debut, and Winner of The 2012 British Mercury Prize. Pronounced “alt-J”, the delta sign is created when you hold down the alt key on your computer keyboard and punch ‘J’ on a Mac computer. The symbol has a deeper meaning. The band explains that, “in mathematical equations it’s used to show change.” Gwil, Joe Newman [guitar/vocals], Gus Unger-Hamilton [keyboards] and Thom Green [drums] met at Leeds University in 2007.]

4. (81.) Folkicide – “Power To The People”
from: The Genocide is Mean EP / Independent / August 18, 2012
[Follow up to “Devotional Hymns From the Church of the Darwinian Snuff Film.” Folkicide is the outlet for Kansas City songwriter Burnie Booth’s vision of constructive pessimism that he hopes in time will be recognized as a new acoustical genre fully devoted to the documentation of the delightful futility of existence. Folkicide continues their pessimistic exploration into the decaying frame of Western Civilization. Most of the music was recorded on May 11, 2012, by Chubby Smith, at his magical tractor shed, in Perry, Kansas. Folkicide also released, “Folkicide’s Night at The Opera,” this year. Recorded April through August, 2012, mostly in Folkicide’s basement. Engineered and Mastered by David Moore at Merriam Shoals Studios. All songs were originally written by Queen members, then strategically deconstructed by Folkicide Mercury without disrespect or irony because he truly loves Queen (pre-Hot Space) and Night at The Opera in particular.]

5. (80.) Gossip – “Move in The Right Direction”
from: A Joyful Noise / Columbia Records a division of Sony Records / May 11, 2012
[Formed in 1999 in Olympia, Washington with vocalist Beth Ditto, guitarist Nathan “Brace Paine” Howdeshell and drummer Kathy Mendonca. All 3 were originally from Searcy, Arkansas; Mendonca moved to Olympia to attend Evergreen State College and Howdeshell and Ditto followed. Drummer Kathy Mendonca left the band to pursue a career as a midwife. Established punk drummer Hannah Blilie joined to replace her.]

6. (79.) The Clementines – “Fair Trade”
from: The Clementines / Independent / August 18, 2012
[We first met The Clementines as a duo Tim Jenkins & Nicole Springer when they played LIVE on our April 25 show. Since then they’ve added Stephanie Williams on Drums, and Travis Earndshaw on Bass. Nicole Springer grew up in Oak Grove, MO, and graduated H.S. in 2004. She studied Music-Vocal/Choral at Missouri State University, in Springfield, MO, and studied Special Education with Music at Metropolitan MO CC, in KCMO. Nicole told The Pitch (Jan. 10, 2012 article): “I grew up singing in gospel choirs,” she says. “And I still love gospel music, though I’m not religious or anything. I did musicals throughout high school, and I went to school for a year at Missouri State for music education. But I’ve never been in a committed band before this one.” Nicole told David Hudnall of The Pitch: that her vision for the Clementines was initially inspired by the Irish folk duo the Swell Season. “I had just seen them in concert before I put up that ad,” Springer says. “They’re just so passionate, and I wanted to do something that had that much soul in it. It’s the same reason I like Aretha or the Gossip.” Tim Jenkins grew up in KC. Studied at UMKC. He has been playing music for over 10 years. He is a fan of “geek rock, like ’70s prog stuff.” “I usually bring in a song,” Springer says, “and Tim will tweak it and add solos and sometimes a riff — he helps complete it.” More info at: reverbnation.com/theclementinesnicoleandtim]

[24-year old British soul musician has been compared to Bill Withers, Randy Newman, and Otis Redding, he grew up in North London, the son of Ugandan parents who had escaped the Amin regime.]

8. (77.) Helen Gillet – “Carolina”

A familiar face in New Orleans’ experimental jazz scene. Her first New Orleans-recorded album, “Running of the Bells,” was released last year. Helen Gillet’s new album has been compared to intensity and grace of John Cale and the recordings of the Velvet Underground and Nick Drake. Hellen Gillet was part ow WE and art/performance/installation created last year by Jane Gotch and Mark Southerland who often welcomes Gillet to KC for live shows with is band Snuff Jazz.]

[Katy & Go-Go is vocalist and guitarist Katy Guillen (of The B’Dinas) and drummer extraordinaire Go-Go Ray (of Mike Dillon’s Go-Go Jungle, Samantha Fish, John Velghe). They hit the KC stages in January of 2011, securing a steady monthly gig at The Brick’s Rhythm, Roots, & Soul Saturday Matinee. Nominated for a Pitch Music Award for Best Blues Band. Band leader, Katy Guillen has told us that Go-Go is on the road for an indefinite amount of time. Before he left to tour the country and Europe he replaced himself with an awesome drummer: Kelsey Cook, and Tim Braun of Good Foot has joined the band on bass.]

Originally from Greensburg, Kentucky, Forrest Whitlow is now based in Kansas City, KS. 90.1 FM”s Signal To Noise host Barry Lee describes Forrest Whitlow as, “David Lynch meets Neil Young.” This is Forrest’s ninth studio album. 11. (74.) Power and Light – “Earthly Schemes”
from: Power and Light [EP] / Independent / January 14, 2012
[A collaboration between: Nathan Readey (production) and Andrew Connor (songs, vocals). Andrew Connor saw the potential of Readey’s work and because of the success of Kansas City based bands like Ssion, he wanted to encourage Readey by allowing him to remix and release several new Ghosty songs, before Ghosty released them in their own new album. Nominated for a Pitch Music Award for Best Electronic Band.]

12. (73.) Laura Spiegel – “A Folk Study”
from: The Expanding Universe / Unseen Worlds / September 25, 2012
[Classic 1980 debut album by composer and computer music pioneer Laurie Spiegel. The album is reissued here for the first time in a massively expanded two-CD set, containing all four original album tracks plus an additional 15 tracks from the same period, nearly all previously unreleased! Chicago born composer. She has worked at Bell Laboratories, in computer graphics, and is known primarily for her electronic-music compositions and her algorithmic composition software Music Mouse. Spiegel was seen by some as a pioneer of the New York, new-music scene. Spiegel’s piece “Sediment” was used in the “cornucopia scene” of the 2012 movie The Hunger Games.]

[Founded in 1990 by Mike McCoy who grew up in Hutchinson, Kansas. Cher U.K. filled venues in Kansas City playing punk rock music. Mike McCoy, now lives in Austin Texas and fronts his band the Service Industry. Mike is the founder of The North vs. South Music Festival. Cher UK reunited to play the Middle of the Map Festival in April. While in KC Mike McCoy gathered up several musicians to record a new Cher UK EP. Mike McCoy Guitar & Vox, Mark Reynolds – Bass, Bernie Dugan – Drums. Mike McCoy, Mark Reynolds, Bernie Dugan, Lyle Wells of Cher UK & Matt Kesler of The Pedaljets joined us live on Wednesday MidDay Medley on October 17 to talk about their CD Release show at Davey’s Uptown, October 20.]

[Their song “Motionless” is on Midwestern Audio Vol. 1. Formed in Saint Joseph, MO, in 2008 by Austin (songwriter) and Dansare (voice). They released their first EP “Elephant” in early 2010. “The Woe Dies” was inspired by Bob Dylan, Iron & Wine, and Bright Eyes.]

[First album of new material in over 13 years. Earlier this year, the 68-year-old Bobby Womack was released from the hospital following a successful recovery from pneumonia. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee has also been battling cancer and was scheduled to undergo surgery this year and looks forward to touring in support of his album.]

[Acoustic song-writing project of multi-instrumentalist Brandon Draper, along with Barclay Martin and Rick Willoughby. Johan was inspired by the writings of Brandon’s 4th great grandfather Johan Augustin Pihl, a Swedish Immigrant that settled in the Kansas Plains in 1860. On Nov. 12 Organic Proof released a new single track called “Simple” at organicproof.bandcamp.com. Rick Willoughby works with Quixotic and he also plays with The Snow Globes, with Barclay Martin, and he joined us LIVE on Wednesday MidDay Medley, on November 21, with Victor & Penny, another KC based band where Rick plays bass.]

[We interviewed Eleni Mandell for a second time. Her recent tour and musical release came from the legendary indie singer songwriter who seemed happier than we’ve ever seen her before. The music created while she was pregnant, was, after the birth of her twins, released with an extensive tour in support of the new music. We talked with Eleni on our August 1 Wednesday MidDay Medley, about touring with the babies, her ex boyfriend that she hired as her nanny, and the inspiration for the new songs. Eleni Mandell played Davey’s Uptown Ramblers Club, on Aug 4, with Mikal Shapiro and Ruddy Swain.]

Recorded in Los Angeles during the summer of 2011, the album is a collection of new material along with the very first studio recordings of several of Spektor’s older live songs. The album’s second single, “Don’t Leave Me (Ne me quitte pas)” is a song originally from Spektor’s 2002 album Songs. [English indie pop band, formed in London in 2008. The group released their debut album, xx in August 2009. In 2010, the band won the Mercury Music Prize for their debut album. The band met while studying at Elliott School, the same school that produced Hot Chip, and Four Tet. Oliver Sim and Romy Madley-Croft started the band as a duo when they were 15. Guitarist Baria Qureshi joined once they began performing in 2005, with Jamie Smith joining a year after.]
