(Part 1 of 4)

The 119 Best Recordings of 2019 are based on playlists of Wednesday MidDay Medley. We’ve compiled representative tracks from our favorite full-length and EP recordings of 2019 (and a few that came out late in 2018). We realize these “Best of” lists can seem subjective, so we ask that you please accept our list as a celebration of the year in music.

In 2019 we have broadcast nearly 800 musical recordings through our 90.1 FM Community Radio Airwaves, powered by our 100,000 watt transmitter. Over 400 of these tracks were from New & MidCoastal Releases. We played tracks from 145 National Releases, and 183 MidCoastal Releases. 75 of the representative tracks in our “Best of” list are from MidCoastal Releases. In 2019 we conducted 127 interviews, with 209 special guests. 43 of the bands and artists in our “Best of” list have joined us as guests on WMM.

2. (119.) Tituss Burgess – “45 (feat. Daniel J. Watts)”
from: Saint Tituss – EP / Tituss Ink / July 26, 2019
[Tituss Burgess was born February 21, 1979. He is an American actor and singer. He has appeared in numerous Broadway musicals. He is best known for starring as Titus Andromedon on the Netflix comedy series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (2015–2019), for which he has received four consecutive Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series nominations. Born and raised in Athens, Georgia, he attended Cedar Shoals High School where he was active in the theatre program. He graduated from the University of Georgia with a BA in music. He is openly gay. Burgess made his Broadway debut in the musical Good Vibrations as Eddie in 2005, and then appeared in Jersey Boys in 2005 as Hal Miller. He originated the role of “Sebastian the Crab” in the musical The Little Mermaid in 2007 and went on to the role of Nicely-Nicely Johnson, traditionally played by a white actor, in the revival of Guys and Dolls in 2009. He has also performed in several regional theater productions, including The Wiz and Jesus Christ Superstar. Burgess performed at the “Broadway for Obama” benefit concert held at the State Theatre Center for the Arts in Easton, Pennsylvania on October 20, 2008. He appeared in Season 5 of 30 Rock as D’Fwan, a member of Tracy Jordan’s wife’s entourage. He reprised the role in Season 6. “45” is the first track off Burgess’ first album in seven years, Saint Tituss. Described by the artist as his “deepest and most soul-searching” work to date. He told them.us “… given the political climate, I think it’s time to speak out. I fear for our country. I fear for how our country treats its citizens and I fear for how our citizens treat each other. It’s a larger problem than just legislation. I didn’t know how to respond, so I just started with art.”]

3. (118.) Y La Bamba – “Mujeres (Album Version)”

[Mujeres is “Woman Island” in the Gulf of Mexico. Y La Bamba has been many things, but at the heart of it is singer-songwriter Luz Elena Mendoza’s inquisitive sense of self. Their fifth record, Mujeres, carries on the Portland-based band’s affinity for spiritual contemplation, but goes a step further in telling a story with a full emotional spectrum. Coming off Ojos Del Sol, one of NPR’s Top 50 Albums of 2016, Mujeres exhibits the scope of Mendoza’s artistic voice like never before. “Soy como soy,” Mendoza says, and that declaration is the bold— even political— statement that positions Mujeres to be Y La Bamba’s most unbridled offering yet.]

4. (117.) Sinkane – “Ya Sudan”

[7th Album from Sinkane (born Ahmed Abdullahi Gallab in London, England in 1983. He is a Sudanese-American musician who blends krautrock, prog rock, electronica, free jazz and funk rock with Sudanese pop. Born to college professors in London, he lived in Sudan, then moved to the US when he was five, and lived for some time in Ohio. Prior to embarking on his solo career, he worked with Eleanor Friedberger, Caribou, of Montreal, Born Ruffians, and Yeasayer as a session musician. Ahmed Gallab is the vocalist and music director of the Atomic Bomb! Band which plays the music of Nigerian funk musician William Onyeabor. The group includes David Byrne (of Talking Heads), Money Mark (of the Beastie Boys), Damon Albarn (of Blur and Gorillaz), Dev Hynes (aka Blood Orange and Lightspeed Champion), Alexis Taylor (of Hot Chip), Charles Lloyd, Amadou and Mariam, Jamie Lidell, Pharoah Sanders, Joshua Redman, among many many others.]

5. (116.) The Bad Ideas – “Nightmare”

[The Bad Ideas are: Britt Adair on guitar, Breaka Dawn on vocals, Matt Roberts on bass, and Way Jillis on drums. The Bad Ideas is an American punk band from Kansas City, Missouri formed in August 2011. They’ve written all original songs and are influenced by post-hardcore, punk, and early 80’s punk. Their EP, Worse Thoughts, was recorded on January 22, 2012 and released March, 2012. Their first self-produced full length, Lesson #1 was released March 8, 2013. The Bad Ideas also released a 7″ split with Red Kate on March 31, 2014. Their most recent release is a full length cassette, “Leave Me Alone.” Released in June 6, 2015.]

6. (115.) Sharon Van Etten – “Seventeen”
from: Remind Me Tomorrow / Jagjaguar / January 18, 2019
[5th studio album from Sharon Van Etten (born February 26, 1981 in Belleville, New Jersey and lived in Nutley, NJ before moving to Clinton as a pre-teen. Later, she moved to Tennessee to attend Middle Tennessee State University and studied recording, but dropped out of college after a year. Van Etten ended up working at the Red Rose, a coffee and record shop and music venue in Murfreesboro, for about five years. In 2004, she moved back to New Jersey, where she worked at Perryville Wine and Spirits. Van Etten moved to New York City in 2005. Van Etten self-released handmade CDs until 2009, when her debut studio recording was released. Before her studio debut, she worked at Astor Wines and as a publicist at Ba Da Bing Records. Van Etten’s debut, Because I Was in Love, was released on May 26, 2009, on Language of Stone, and was manufactured and distributed by Drag City. This is her third album from Jagjaguar.]

7. (114.) Shawn Stewart – “Better Than Me (feat. Ro Myra)”

[Radio was recorded by Pat Tomek, Mike Moreland, and Rob Nold, with mixing, mastering, and engineering performed by Pat Tomek. Drums and most percussion- was by Pat Tomek. All songs, 2019, “Hear You” Music. Shawn Stewart started playing music in Kansas City after he moved here from Chicago in 1991. His band, “Tin Roof Echo” played venues around town through 1993 when he retired to the suburbs to raise a family as a “stay at home dad.” In 2014, after his kids were grown, he moved midtown to pick up where he left off. He released four albums under the moniker, “JohnnySuperColossal”. In September he’s taking his trailer to Nashville for three months then to Los Angeles for three months to pursue music publishers and radio.]

8. (113.) Nilüfer Yanya – “In Your Head”
from: Miss Universe / ATO Records / March 22, 2019
[Debut album from British musical artist, Nilüfer Yanya who was born in 1996, the daughter of two visual artists. Yanya grew up in Chelsea, London. Growing up with her father’s Turkish music and her mother’s classical music playing at home, she soon gravitated to guitar rock and learned how to play the instrument at age 12. Informally starting her musical career with demos uploaded to SoundCloud in 2014, she turned down an offer to join a girl group produced by Louis Tomlinson of One Direction and focused on developing her own music instead. Her first EP, “Small Crimes/Keep on Calling”, was released in 2016. Her second EP, “Plant Feed”, was released in 2017, followed by “Do You Like Pain?” in 2018. Miss Universe has received wide critical acclaim, with critics noting her ability to bounce back and forth between musical and lyrical styles, shifting between “gimlet-eyed composure and cataclysmic panic”. Yanya’s music has been described as nervous and restless, combining influences from indie rock to soul, jazz, and trip hop. A Stereogum review called her voice “malleable and endlessly expressive.]

[Kansas City based musician, singer, songwriter, music scholar, record buyer at Mills Record Company, Dylan Pyles joined us on September 25, 2019, to share music and details on his new 20 track album, Popular Songs for the Heart, released September 20, 2019 digitally and on cassette through Manor Records. Dylan also released the 6 song EP, Solo Acoustic Guitar Vol. 1, on September 20, 2019. 11.(110.) Weyes Blood – “Something To Believe”

[Weyes Blood is Natalie Mering, born June 11, 1988, in Santa Monica, CA and grew up in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. She has released 4 albums and an EP. Both her siblings and parents are musicians and music played an important part in her upbringing. Her older brother, Zak Mering, is also a noteworthy recording artist, producer and songwriter under the “Raw Thrills” alias. At the age of 15 Mering began using the moniker Wise Blood to write songs. She changed to Weyes Bluhd on several self released records before changing the spelling to Weyes Blood. She took the name from the Flannery O’Connor novel Wise Blood. At the same time, while working on her own material, she toured the underground music scene with bands Jackie-O Motherfucker and Nautical Almanac. In 2011 she released the album The Outside Room as Weyes Blood And The Dark Juices on Not Not Fun Records. Uncut magazine described the album as “the vibe is devotional and ethereal, but with an edge”, while Beatbots found it “an impressive and ambitious album”. Natalie released her second record in October 2014 called The Innocents, which was released through Mexican Summer. In 2016 she released the album Front Row Seat to Earth on Mexican Summer to great acclaim throughout the music industry, and has spent the past few years touring throughout Europe and the states.]

12. (109.) Quixotic & Calvin Arsenia – “Experience”

[An innovative performance art collective that fuses imagination with technology, dance, projection, mapping and live music to create fully-immersive, multi-sensory experiences. Quixotic harnesses light, rhythm and expressive emotion. Quixotic was given Silicon Valley’s unofficial stamp of genius when they were invited to perform at the global TED Conference in 2012. A unique blend of performance art, technology and emotion. Quixotic fuses all these elements in to what the New York Times branded an “innovative circus performance,” and Men’s Journal declared “one of the best contemporary [cirque] acts.” They have performed for audiences worldwide and have helped launch brand products for companies such as BVLGARI, Faena Hotels, Garmin, HP, Smithsonian and Toyota. 13. (108.) Lionel Limiñana & The Limiñanas – “Ocean Kids”
from: Le Bel Été / Because Music / Nov. 15, 2019
[The Limiñanas are Lionel & Marie Limiñana . They are based in Cabestany, deep south of France. They record garage, psych and pop music. Getting their start in October of 2009, The Limiñanas are the brainchild of Lio and Marie Limiñana.]

14. (107.) Moon Duo – “Stars Are The Light”
from: Stars Are the Light / Sacred Bones / September 27, 2019
[Moon Duo is a psychedelic rock band from San Francisco, California formed in 2009 by Wooden Shjips guitarist Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada. Their debut album Mazes was released on Sacred Bones Records in 2011. The band’s style is inspired by psychedelic rock, combining repetitive rhythms and saturated guitars. Their influences include Alan Vega of Suicide, Spacemen 3 and Silver Apples. The band’s seventh full-length album, Stars Are the Light, was released on September 27, 2019.]

15. (106.) HMPH! – “The Upside”
from: HMPH! / Haymaker Records / November 15, 2019
[Ryan Lee Toms on guitar, Jonathan Thatch on drums, Kitten Adventure Boggs on bass. HMPH!’s second album, the self-titled “HMPH!” features their signature math-rock sound with a progressive rock and avant-jazz twist. The songs on HMPH! are more sprawling than on 2015’s Headrush, with lots of detours and left turns along the way. Recorded by the band in their home recording studio, the album had time to evolve, and the complicated arrangements materialized through this process. This album also features heavy basslines provided by Kitten Boggs, a significant addition since their first record. This album is a choose your own adventure of abrupt rhythm changes, dissident chords, or even about-face genre-hops into funk, punk, or samba. “HMPH!” is a different kind of album from a different kind of band.]

18. (103.) Purple Mountains – “My Happiness is Gone”
from: Purple Mountains / Drag City Records / July 12, 2019
[Purple Mountains was an American indie rock project formed by musician and poet David Berman. The project debuted in May 2019, over a decade after the dissolution of Berman’s previous group Silver Jews. An eponymous album was released in July 2019. The album was recorded primarily in Chicago and produced by Jarvis Taveniere and Jeremy Earl of the band Woods. The project’s name is a mondegreen of the lyric “Purple mountain majesties” from “America the Beautiful”. The project was presumably dissolved upon Berman’s death on August 7, 2019. Berman returned to music in 2018, co-producing Yonatan Gat’s critically acclaimed album Universalists. On December 12, 2018, former Pavement and Silver Jews member Bob Nastanovich revealed on his podcast Three Songs that David Berman would release new music in 2019 under the name Purple Mountains, which was also the name of Berman’s blog. Although, his blog was also titled Menthol Mountains at times. On May 10, 2019, Berman released his first music in over a decade, a single entitled “All My Happiness Is Gone” on vinyl by Drag City, using the moniker Purple Mountains. The single included two remixes of the song, “All My Happiness Is Wrong” by Noah Count and “All My Happiness Is Long” by Mark Nevers featuring clipped recordings of Dave Cloud, and also indicated that a full-length album was a “couple months away.” It also credited Berman, Jeremy Earl and Jarvis Taveniere of Woods, Aaron Neveu and songwriter Anna St. Louis. The single was released digitally on May 17, 2019 with the announcement of a full-length album. The eponymous debut album, accompanied by a US tour, was released on July 12, 2019. “Darkness and Cold” was released as the album’s second single on June 11, 2019. “Margaritas at the Mall” was released as the album’s third and final single on June 28, 2019. A remix of “All My Happiness Is Gone” by Australian electronic music group The Avalanches, who Berman has collaborated with in the past, was commissioned by him, but a licensing issue prevented their version from being released. A few reviews: David Berman is back from his post-Silver Jews void and moving Purple Mountains onto our fruited cultural plain. His iconic literary lyrics sit astride immaculate country-rock tunes, evoking jukebox-ready disaffection with twists of pathos, comedy and tragedy – an indie poet laureate at false dusk! Stop the world! Purple Mountains’ inaugural voyage launches with a five-alarm weep-rocker – and total self-destruction never sounded so good. Amid sumptuous mellotron strings n’ galloping tom-toms, David Berman’s stone-cold account of middle age’s wild unkindnesses takes on a positively heroic glow.]

19. (102.) Kadesh Flow – “Party Thoughts (feat. Jessica Paige)”

[Kadesh Flow is Ryan Davis is a rapper with an MBA. At age 11, he began rapping and playing trombone within two weeks of one another. His music has been featured on network television in multiple countries and territories across Southeast Asia. Locally, Kadesh can be found rocking solo hip hop sets, laying down bone bars with KC funk juggernaut The Phantastics, or jamming with Marcus Lewis Big Band.]

20. (101.) Chloe Jacobson – “Midas”

22. (99.) Helkat – “I Want You”
from: HelKat / Helkat / December 8, 2019
[1st single form debut 5-song EP from Kansas City based Post apocalyptic lounge punk who play “twangy queer cuddly rock,” with Helen Proctor on lead vocals & guitar, Rozz Petrozz on drums, Olive Cook on guitar and Dylan C.H. on bass. Recording engieered nd matred by Pat Tomek.]

23. (98.) Bedouine – “Echo Park”
from: Bird Songs of a Killjoy / Spacebomb / June 21, 2019
[2nd full-length album from Bedouine, aka Azniv Korkejian, a Syrian-American musician. She has lived in a number of cities and countries, including Saudi Arabia, Houston, Syria, and Boston. Bedouine released her first self-titled full-length album in 2017. The record includes sounds from her memories of her grandmother’s home in Syria, specifically on “Summer Cold” and a song written in Armenian “Louise” (which translates to “light and is written as Լոյս in Armenian). In an interview with Sound of Boston, Korkejian discussed writing the song in Western Armenian, the dialect her family speaks: “I was pretty shy about it because, like I said, my Armenian is kind of broken. But, I ran it by my cousin and kind of had his green light, and I got to a point where I just thought, even if it’s not perfect it’s okay because it’s still my experience.”]

24. (97.) Giants Chair – “Kids Running”

[Third album from Giants Chair who are: Scott Hobart on lead vocals & guitar, Byron Collum on bass, and Paul Ackerman on drums. Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Duane Trower at Weights & Measures Soundlab, KCMO. Scott and Byron met at the KC Art Institute in 1989. After college they moved to Collum’s hometown of Green Bay, and formed Giant’s Chair in 1993. The band moved back to Kansas City became part of the burgeoning, mid-90’s KC rock scene, sharing bills with Germbox, Season To Risk, Molly McGuire and Shiner. Shiner even named one of their songs after the band. After being signed to Caulfield Records out of Lincoln NE. on the strength of their debut 7″ single, Giant’s Chair recorded two full-length albums and toured the U.S. twice. Giant’s Chair ended in 1997 but have recently been working on new music. In 2017 they releases the singles “The Streets” and “Featureless Horizon”.]

27. (94.) Keaton Conrad – “I Think I Fell in Love with You”
from: Nova / Keaton Conrad / February 1, 2019
[Keaton Conrad is a recording artist from Kansas City. He has been regarded as “exceptionally promising” (The Kansas City Star) and “making things happen on stages …with an engaging voice and passion for creating good music” (Ink Magazine). In 2015, Keaton Conrad released his debut EP, Panic & Blame, which contained five original songs that were heavily inspired by the pop rock sound he grew up on. His first full-length album, Waves, followed in January 2017 which ranged in style from pop rock to hip-hop to ambient. Conrad spent 2 years as the lead singer & keyboardist in the cover band ChangeUp, performing around KC.]

28. (93.) Angel Olsen – “All Mirrors”

[4th album from Angel Olsen who was born January 22, 1987. She is an American singer-songwriter and musician from St. Louis, Missouri who currently lives in Asheville, North Carolina. At age three, Olsen was adopted by a foster family that had cared for her since shortly after her birth. The difference in years between her and her parents left an impression. “Because there are so many decades of difference between us, I became more interested in what their childhood was like,” she says of her parents, both of whom still live in St. Louis. “I fantasized about what it was like to be young in the ’30s and ’50s, more so than other kids my age.” Olsen explained that “my mother just has this capacity for children.” Despite early adolescent aspirations to be a “pop star”, her interests later shifted in high school. Olsen became more introverted, regularly attending punk rock and noise music shows at the Lemp Neighborhood Arts Center and the Creepy Crawl as well as Christian rock shows throughout the city. She began learning the piano and guitar and writing her own music. Two years after graduating from Tower Grove Christian High School, Olsen moved to Chicago.After releasing her first EP, Strange Cacti, and a debut album, Half Way Home, on Bathetic Records, Olsen signed with Jagjaguwar, ahead of her first full-band record, Burn Your Fire for No Witness, which was released on February 17, 2014. Olsen’s third full-length album, My Woman, was released on September 2, 2016. In addition to her work with Bonnie “Prince” Billy and The Cairo Gang, Olsen has collaborated with a number of other notable figures of American indie rock, including Tim Kinsella of Cap’n Jazz, LeRoy Bach of Wilco and Cass McCombs. Her collaboration with Kinsella and Bach, as well as with Chicago poet Marvin Tate, resulted in the album Tim Kinsella Sings the Songs of Marvin Tate by Leroy Bach Featuring Angel Olsen which the group released on Indianapolis label Joyful Noise Recordings on December 3, 2013. Her song “Windows” was featured in the final episode of the Netflix original series 13 Reasons Why.]

[14th studio solo album from rhythm & blues and gospel singer, actress and civil rights activist, born in Chicago, Illinois on July 10, 1939. The album’s cover features the photograph “Outside Looking In” by Gordon Parks from his 1956 photo essay The Restraints: Open and Hidden. The album was produced and written by Ben Harper. Staples & Harper had previously collaborated on “Love and Trust”, a song from Staples’ 2016 album, Livin’ on a High Note. In a statement, Staples said, “These songs are delivering such a strong message. We truly need to make a change if we want this world to be better.” Mavis Staples has recorded and performed with her family’s band The Staple Singers. She began her career with her family group in 1950. Initially singing locally at churches, appearing on a weekly radio show, the Staples scored a hit in 1956 with “Uncloudy Day” for the Vee-Jay label. When Mavis graduated from what is now Paul Robeson High School in 1957, The Staple Singers took their music on the road. Led by family patriarch Roebuck “Pops” Staples on guitar and including the voices of Mavis and her siblings Cleotha, Yvonne, and Purvis, the Staples were called “God’s Greatest Hitmakers.” With Mavis’ voice and Pops’ songs, singing, and guitar playing, the Staples evolved from enormously popular gospel singers (with recordings on United and Riverside as well as Vee-Jay) to become the most spectacular and influential spirituality-based group in America. By the mid-1960s The Staple Singers, inspired by Pops’ close friendship with Martin Luther King, Jr., became the spiritual and musical voices of the civil rights movement. They covered contemporary pop hits with positive messages, including Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall” and a version of Stephen Stills’ “For What It’s Worth.” Staples was briefly married to Spencer Leak in 1964; they divorced when Staples would not end her music career to stay home. She has no children. In the 2015 documentary Mavis! she reveals that Bob Dylan once proposed to her, and she turned him down.]

The notes for this album read: “ameri’kana is a canary in a coal mine, the watchman at the tower. It is a desire to remember where we come from and assure that we better ourselves in every step along our journey. Every chapter is an example, a reason to not be silent and not accept corrupt leaders as something inevitable. ameri’kana is based on faith, faith that every person on this continent carries within themselves the ability to grow, to awaken their consciousness and merits the the same rights. We were accomplices to get ourselves to this point so we will have to be accomplices in the solutions.” This was their follow up released to their critically acclaimed I Am Another You, released May 26, 2017. The quartet has toured with Arcade Fire, Thievery Corporation, Cold War Kids, Los Lobos, Ozomatli, Tennis, Sergio Mendoza of Calexico, Rodrigo y Gabriela, and Hurray for the Riff Raff.]

Josh Berwanger was in The Anniversary, a Kansas band that released, 2000’s Designing a Nervous Breakdown & 2002’s Your Majesty and sold over 100,000 records before breaking up on tour in Japan. The band recently reunited for new shows and a tour this year. Berwanger was also in the band, The Only Children, and released, 2004’s Change of Living & 2007’s Keeper of Youth. When Keeper of Touth ended Josh Berwanger took a break and became a high school basketball coach. In the 2012 Josh formed the Josh Berwanger band. 11. Calvin Arsenia – “Back To You”

Produced by Tony Braunagel (he also delivers exquisite percussion on LA Sessions) with Paul Brown on guitar, Mike Finnigan on keyboards, Freddie Washington on bass, and David Garfield on piano. Between them, the five musicians have worked with some of music’s most iconic names, including Jimi Hendrix, George Benson, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Leonard Cohen, Bonnie Raitt, Chuck Loeb, Rickie Lee Jones, Buddy Guy, The Neville Brothers From Center Cut Record Press Release: “It was a thrill for me to work with such legendary players,” says Calvin. “Not only were they incredibly talented, but I got off a plane straight from Australia, hit the studio, and they were more than ready to get to that place where you honor the songs, leaving their egos at the door and honoring what the muses tell them. It was one of the best recording experiences I ever had.” Calvin’s production M.O. on previous recordings was to piece together songs “like pieces of a puzzle” and “layer them over several sessions.” He believes the immediacy of the LA Sessions, and having the instrumentation all happening in the “same emotional space together as a band,” powerfully served the intimacy of the album, particularly on the reflective “Back To You.” “It’s one of the most vulnerable songs on the album, and it always plays that way in my live set, and the guys were able to help me capture that,” he says. “The song is a very heartfelt admission of guilt, I think. But it’s done in a way people usually don’t want to talk about. Breakup songs are usually angry and lashing out and this is a very sober-minded take on it. It’s not something we usually want to admit, surrendering or admitting defeat in a relationship, because everyone thinks you’re always going to make it through, and this is saying ‘no we didn’t…but it’s OK.’” Born in Orlando, Florida, his creative journey really began when he moved to the KC suburb of Olathe, teaching himself the guitar, and eventually the harp. He learned his signature instrument at the age of 20 after he couldn’t find a harpist as determined as him to meld folk, rock, classical, rap and R&B into the irresistible fusion which has become his calling card in the Kansas City music scene and beyond. His passion for stretching the boundaries of musical expression saw him transform a trip to Edinburgh, Scotland’s Fringe Festival early in his career into a life-changing music mission, with an Edinburgh church offering him a role as musical liaison between the church and the city that would change his life. Two years and 300 shows later, Calvin returned to Kansas City reborn as a humanistic songwriter/performer whose impassioned and conceptual stage shows (regularly sold-out in Kansas City, currently catching fire on the West Coast with a diverse following across Europe), are collaborative, costumed-culture-bridging spectacles which In KC Magazine has hailed as ‘equal parts opera, symphony, musical theatre, rock show, all built around its creator: a charismatic 6-foot-7-inch harpist with a natural stage command and knack for gilding gold and painting lilies.’ Calvin’s 2018 national debut, Cantaloupe (Center Cut Records), has been acclaimed for melding diverse textures into an alluring signature sound for the adventurous artist. Most recently, Calvin performed live at L.A.’s The Mint, showcasing the songs on LA Sessions with the musicians who collaborated with him on the album. Says Calvin: “It’s such a special experience to play with them. To be able to perform these songs in front of an audience and do this for a living – to have made a career out of something I love is so amazing – it is an honor that I never take for granted.” On September 15, 2018 Calvin released Cantaloupe on Center Cut Records. Calvin released Honeydew on June 28, an EP including a remix of three of the songs from Cantaloupe. Patrick Sprehe of Center Cut Records tells us that Calvin has been in California and the West Coast for much the past month. Calvin attended the Pride Parade in San Francisca and had a successful show at Hotel Utah. Center Cut reunited the musicians fromLA Sessions for a big show at The Mint in Los Angeles, Starline Social Club in Oakland, and a couple of events in Healdsburg. Calvin also played Oregon Country Fair with Quixotic and as a solo artist. alvin also played SoFar Sounds/xFinity radio show at the Tonga Room in San Francisco and is attending the first Billboard Pride Summit in LA on Thursday. 12. Ada Lea – “Wild Heart”

[Montreal, Quebec-based musician Ada Lea is also a painter and visual artist, and traces of her many creative abilities run throughout her debut album. To her, music and visual art are different vessels for communicating similar ideas. Ada Lea’s appreciation of female artists — including the writer Sylvia Plath, visual artists Frida Kahlo and Eva Hesse, and musicians Karen Dalton and Nina Simone — provides inspiration and guidance, informing her use of multiple artforms as tools for self-expression. Whether it’s creating music or art, “It’s a world that I can build around me and sit inside,” she says. [Florist is an American indie pop band from Brooklyn, New Yorkformed in 2013 with the release of a six-track EP titled We Have Been This Way Forever. Florist recorded another six-song EP, titled 6 days of songs, in May 2014, after lead vocalist Emily Sprague was severely injured in a hit-and-run while riding her bicycle. In October 2015, Florist released another EP titled Holdly on Double Double Whammy. Also in 2015, the band was listed on Stereogum’s “50 Best New Bands Of 2015” list. The band was also featured as one of Stereogum’s “Band To Watch” in 2015. In January 2016, Florist released their debut studio album titled The Birds Outside Sang on Double Double Whammy. The album was listed at number 34 on Noisey’s “100 Best Albums of 2016” list. Band members include: Emily Sprague, Rick Spataro, Jonnie Baker, and Felix Walworth. Sprague is an avid modular synthesizer collector and has made a number of YouTube videos showcasing her equipment. She self-released her debut solo album Water Memory, an ambient album composed with these instruments, in December 2017 with a follow-up album “Mount Vision” released in September 2018. In 2019, Beyonce used an instrumental portion of Florist track “Thank You” from their 2016 release The Birds Outside Sang in her Netflix concert movie Homecoming. Florist’s latest album, Emily Alone, was released was granted “Best New Music” by Pitchfork.]

14. Jay Som – “Super Bike”

If last year’s aptly named Turn Into compilation showcased a fuzz-loving artist in flux—chronicling her mission to master bedroom recording—then the rising Oakland star’s latest, Everybody Works, is the LP equivalent of mission accomplished. Duterte is as DIY as ever—writing, recording, playing, and producing every sound beyond a few backing vocals—but she takes us places we never could have imagined, wedding lo-fi rock to hi-fi home orchestration, and weaving evocative autobiographical poetry into energetic punk, electrified folk, and dreamy alt-funk. And while Duterte’s early stuff found her bucking against life’s lows, Everybody Works is about turning that angst into fuel for forging ahead. “Last time I was angry at the world,” she says. “This is a note to myself: everybody’s trying their best on their own set of problems and goals. We’re all working for something.” Everybody Works was made in three furious, caffeinated weeks in October. She came home from the road, moved into a new apartment, set up her bedroom studio (with room for a bed this time) and dove in. Duterte even ditched most of her demos, writing half the LP on the spot and making lushly composed pieces like “Lipstick Stains” all the more impressive. While the guitar-grinding Jay Som we first fell in love with still reigns on shoegazey shredders like “1 Billion Dogs” and in the melodic distortions of “Take It,” we also get the sublimely spacious synth-pop beauty of “Remain,” and the luxe, proggy funk of “One More Time, Please.” Duterte’s production approach was inspired by the complexity of Tame Impala, the simplicity of Yo La Tengo, and the messiness of Pixies. “Also, I was listening to a lot of Carly Rae Jepsen to be quite honest,” she says. “Her E•MO•TION album actually inspired a lot of the sounds on Everybody Works.” There’s story in the sounds—even in the fact that Duterte’s voice is more present than before. As for the lyrics, our host leaves the meaning to us. So if we can interpret, there’s a bit about the aspirational and fleeting nature of love in the opener, and the oddity of turning your art into job on the titular track. There’s even one tune, “The Bus Song,” that seems to be written as a dialog between two kids, although it plays like vintage Broken Social Scene and likely has more to do with yearning for things out of reach. While there’s no obvious politics here, Duterte says witnessing the challenges facing women, people of color, and the queer community lit a fire. And when you reach the end of Everybody Works, “For Light,” you’ll find a mantra suitable for anyone trying, as Duterte says, “to find your peace even if it’s not perfect.” As her trusty trumpet blows, she sings: “I’ll be right on time, open blinds for light, won’t forget to climb.”]

Singer-songwriter / guitarist Scott Hobart is a multi-talented artist. Known for his acclaimed honky-tonk country band, Rex Hobart & The Misery Boys (Bloodshot Records). Scott also works as the Coterie Theatre’s Resident Technical Director. He has also composed music and performed in the Coterie’s “Night of The Living Dead.” Scott met his friend Byron Collum at the Kansas City Art Institute in 1989. Eventually, they moved to Collum’s hometown of Green Bay, WI and formed the ‘post-hardcore power-trio’ GIANTS CHAIR in 1993. The band moved back to Kansas City became part of the burgeoning, mid-90’s KC rock scene – sharing bills with Germbox, Season To Risk, Molly McGuire and Shiner. After being signed to Caulfield Records out of Lincoln NE. on the strength of their debut 7″ single, GIANTS CHAIR recorded 2 critically-acclaimed full-length albums and toured the U.S. twice. We are talking with Singer-songwriter / guitarist Scott Hobart is a multi-talented artist.

Scott’s Notes:

GIANTS CHAIR started in fall of 1993 when the bassist, Byron Collum and I, Scott Hobart, moved from KC to Green Bay, WI to play with drummer Paul Ackerman who Byron had gone to high school with. As this trio, we started writing and made a 7” that winter that was picked up by now-legendary mid-west indie label, CAULFIELD RECORDS of Lincoln, NE.

We made two full-length LP albums and another 7” for CAULFIELD and toured the U.S. twice – once with fellow KC indie band, BOYS LIFE – before going on “unofficial hiatus” in 1997 when we each went off to pursue other projects, including my own focus on straight-forward, hard country / honky-Tonk with Rex Hobart & The Misery Boys (Bloodshot Records).

In the last 20-plus years, we had done a handful of reunion shows and were then approached by Duane Trower with whom we had recorded the 2nd album with back in ‘96. He offered to remake that record start-to-finish now as a more-seasoned engineer with his own studio. We thought about it, and decided we’d rather try to write a new album than re-learn an old one – so we got to work in November of 2016 and finally had 10 new songs by November 2018.

We recorded the album with Duane at his new studio (WEIGHTS AND MEASURES SOUND LAB) this past winter – and here it is! It’s currently available everywhere digitally but we’re also currently working on the real, official, vinyl release as we speak.

Why this album now? At first it was kind of a “Why not? We’re still all here.” And “Can we make up some new songs that we like?” – and I feel like the music actually came pretty naturally – we’ve never talked too much about the music. We just get together and get loud. I bring some guitar parts and scratch vocal things and we see how it all falls. But I will say that, as a lyricist, it was an interesting “journey” to write and sing this kind of stuff after having now spent the last couple of decades writing very straightforward country story-songs. We can talk about that and how, ultimately, I think I found this side of me again – possibly by trying to come to terms with the uncertainty of so many things in the world and America right now.

She has received several Kansas Association of Broadcasters awards as well as an Edward R. Murrow award for her online work in journalism. Fally lives in Lawrence, Kansas, where she reports on local & touring musicians and is the editor & founder of, I Heart Local Music a comprehensive website providing info and place for music lovers in Lawrence to gather. It was started out of a deep love & appreciation for the local music scene.

Last year Latinx rock’n’rollers and activists, Making Movies, partnered with RAICES to bring awareness to the family separation and detention crisis at the US border, creating a #ReuniteEveryChild T-shirt and hosting “Rally For RAICES” concerts in Chicago and New York that raised funds toward the cause. The band was last seen in Lawrence, KS, during Live on Mass alongside homegrown favorites The Get Up Kids.

In 2019 Making Movies released their third album ameri’kana and its apparent why Rolling Stone says, “this band is breaking down walls in the United States.” Collaborating with legends Los Lobos, Rubén Blades, and the late Lou Reed has NPR Music placing ameri’kana on its Best Music of 2019.

Rubén Blades joined forces with the Making Movies to release three singles on ameri’kana: No Te Calles, Cómo Perdonar (ft. Flor De Toloache) and Delilah a song co-written by Blades and Lou Reed. Grammy.com called Delilah an “epic musical collaboration brought together by the topic of immigration” and NPR Music placed “No Te Calles: on its Best Music of 2019 (so far).

The band has toured extensively, appearing with the likes of Arcade Fire, Los Lobos, Hurray For the Riff Raff, Bomba Estereo, Galactic, Jesse & Joy, Flor De Toloache, Thievery Corporation and will be joining Rubén Blades for some tour dates fall 2019.

[Follow up to their Oct. 2013 debut full length, Moon Colored Jade. Influenced by traditional Mariachi music, Maria The Mexican is a hybrid of Mexican folklore and Rock. For over ten years, Teresa and Maria Elena Cuevas have performed with Marachi Estrella founded by their grandmother Teresa Cuevas in 1970. As one of the first all female mariachi bands in the country, Maria Teresa Alonzo Cuevas is a pioneer in the Hispanic musical community. Her band flourished in the 80s but was struck by tragedy when four of the seven members were killed in the Hyatt Skywalk collapse in 1981. Once Teresa recovered she began teaching her grandchildren Mariachi music. In 2000, Teresa and Maria began exploring other genres of music while simultaneously co-directing Mariachi Estrella. Today the fusion of Maria The Mexican is mixed with a touch of blues, soul, funk, and rock n’ roll enhanced by the musical knowledge and sounds of Garrett Nordstrom]

21. Cate Le Bon – “Daylight Matters”

[From the upcoming 5th solo album from Cate Le Bon who was born Cate Timothy on March 4, 1983. She is a musician and producer. She sings in both English and Welsh. She has released four solo albums, three EPs and a number of singles. Le Bon has toured with artists such as St. Vincent, Perfume Genius and John Grant. In 2018, she joined John Cale on stage at The Barbican with the London Contemporary Orchestra. Le Bon was born in Penboyr, Carmarthenshire, Wales, and first gained public attention when she supported Gruff Rhys (of the Super Furry Animals) on his 2007 solo UK tour. She appeared as a guest vocalist on Neon Neon’s 2008 single “I Lust U” from their album Stainless Style. Under her original name she provided backing vocals on Richard James’s debut solo album The Seven Sleepers Den in 2006. She also appeared on his second solo album, We Went Riding, from 2010. Her first official release was a Welsh language EP, Edrych yn Llygaid Ceffyl Benthyg (“Looking in the Eyes of a Borrowed Horse”, similar to the English expression “to look a gift horse in the mouth”), on Peski Records in 2008. She also self-released the double A-side debut single “No One Can Drag Me Down” / “Disappear” (described by Gruff Rhys as “Bobbie Gentry and Nico fight over a Casio keyboard; melody wins!”) on her website. Le Bon worked alongside Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci’s Megan Childs, who contributed violin, and Super Furry Animals and Thrills collaborator John Thomas, who added pedal steel. Her debut album, Me Oh My was released in 2009, followed by Cyrk and the Cyrk II EP in 2012. In January 2013, Le Bon moved to L A to further her career in the US. Her third album, Mug Museum, was released November 2013. It was produced by Noah Georgeson and Josiah Steinbrick in Los Angeles, and featured Stephen Black (bass) & Huw Evans (guitar). She provided guest vocals on the track “Slow Train” from Kevin Morby’s debut album Harlem River. In 2015, Le Bon collaborated with Tim Presley as DRINKS and released the album Hermits on Holiday in August 2015. DRINKS released their second album Hippo Lite in April 2018. Le Bon released her fourth studio album, Crab Day, on April 15, 2016 on Drag City to generally favourable reviews. The album was produced by Josiah Steinbrick and Noah Georgeson, and again featured Stephen Black (bass) & Huw Evans (guitar), w/ Stella Mozgawa (drums). She noted how the collaboration with Presley had made her realise “that I make music because I love to, not because I have to”. On tour she was supported by Black and Evans and on occasion by Steinbrick and Josh Klinghoffer, a five-piece that also performs instrument improvisations under the name BANANA. In January 2017, Le Bon released the four-track EP Rock Pool via Drag City. It includes her version of the track “I Just Want to Be Good” featuring Perfume Genius, which she wrote for Sweet Baboo’s 2015 album The Boombox Ballads. In the same month Leaving Records released Live by BANANA, recorded live during the band’s 2016 tour and Le Bon remixed Eleanor Friedberger’s ‘Are We Good?’ In 2018, Le Bon signed with Brooklyn based record label Mexican Summer (Ariel Pink, Jessica Pratt, Connan Mockasin). Le Bon will release her fifth studio album, Reward via Mexican Summer on May 24, 2019.]

[The National is an American rock band from Cincinnati, Ohio, formed in 1999. The band consists of Matt Berninger (vocals), Aaron Dessner (guitar, piano, keyboards), Bryce Dessner (guitar), Scott Devendorf (bass) and Bryan Devendorf (drums). Founded by Berninger, Aaron Dessner, and Scott and Bryan Devendorf, The National released their self-titled debut album, The National (2001), on Brassland Records, an independent record label founded by Dessner and his twin brother, Bryce Dessner. Bryce, who had assisted in recording the album, soon joined the band, participating as a full member in the recording of its follow-up, Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers (2003). Leaving behind their day jobs, the National signed with Beggars Banquet Records and released their third studio album, Alligator (2005), to widespread critical acclaim. The band’s fourth and fifth studio albums, Boxer (2007) and High Violet (2010), increased their exposure significantly. In 2013, the band released its sixth studio album, Trouble Will Find Me, which was nominated for Best Alternative Music Album at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards. In 2017 the band released the album Sleep Well Beast, which won the Grammy award for Best Alternative Music Album at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards. Their eighth studio album, I Am Easy to Find, was released on May 17, 2019. Four of the band’s albums were included on NME’s 2013 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Pitchfork writes: “On nearly every song Berninger is accompanied and sometimes silenced by a rotation of featured female vocalists who step in to offer perspective, commentary, and dissent. The National have recruited some of the best singers out, among them Lisa Hannigan, Mina Tindle, Kate Stables, Sharon Van Etten, and the Brooklyn Youth Chorus, whose spotlight “Dust Swirls in Strange Light” benches Berninger all together. Most revelatory of all is Gail Ann Dorsey, David Bowie’s longtime bassist and backing singer, who heralds the album’s new direction midway through opener “You Had Your Soul With You.” Her extraordinary voice of saffron arrives like a divine intervention, instantly parting a track that had previously been National-by-numbers.]

4. Sinkane – “Ya Sudan”

[7th Album from Sinkane (born Ahmed Abdullahi Gallab in London, England in 1983. He is a Sudanese-American musician who blends krautrock, prog rock, electronica, free jazz and funk rock with Sudanese pop. Born to college professors in London, he lived in Sudan, then moved to the US when he was five, and lived for some time in Ohio. Prior to embarking on his solo career, he worked with Eleanor Friedberger, Caribou, of Montreal, Born Ruffians, and Yeasayer as a session musician. Ahmed Gallab is the vocalist and music director of the Atomic Bomb! Band which plays the music of Nigerian funk musician William Onyeabor. The group includes David Byrne (of Talking Heads), Money Mark (of the Beastie Boys), Damon Albarn (of Blur and Gorillaz), Dev Hynes (aka Blood Orange and Lightspeed Champion), Alexis Taylor (of Hot Chip), Charles Lloyd, Amadou and Mariam, Jamie Lidell, Pharoah Sanders, Joshua Redman, among many many others.]

5. Jamila Woods – “FRIDA”

[Second album from Jamila Woods who was born October 6, 1989, and is a Chicago-based American singer, songwriter and poet. Woods is a graduate of St. Ignatius College Prep and Brown University, where she received a BA in Africana Studies and Theater & Performance Studies. Her work focuses on themes of Black ancestry, Black feminism, and Black identity, with recurring emphases on self-love and the City of Chicago. In 2012, Jamila Woods published her first chapbook, entitled The Truth About Dolls. Her work can be found in the anthologies The Breakbeat Poets: New American Poetry in the Age of Hip-Hop (2015), Courage: Daring Poems for Gutsy Girls (2014), and The UnCommon Core: Contemporary Poems for Learning & Living (2013). Her influences include Lucille Clifton, Gwendolyn Brooks, Toni Morrison, and Frida Kahlo. Woods was also one of three editors of The Breakbeat Poets Volume II, entitled Black Girl Magic. The 2018 publication is an anthology of poetry by contemporary Black women, “exploring themes of beauty, unapologetic blackness, intersectionality, self-definition, and more.” Woods is the Associate Artistic Director of Young Chicago Authors (YCA), an organization in the Chicago dedicated to uplifting youth voices through arts education and mentorship. Through YCA, Woods helps to organize Louder Than a Bomb, the world’s largest youth poetry slam festival. She also facilitates poetry workshops and creates curriculum for Chicago Public Schools. She is widely known for her collaborative works with Chance the Rapper on the hit song “Sunday Candy” from the album Surf as well as “Blessings” from Coloring Book. Jason approached the multi-talented David George and asked him to produce. David agreed and helped Jason develop the songs to a new height he wouldn’t have discovered on his own.

David has treated each song as his own and helped Jason grow in his expression of songs.

Jason and David were also fortunate enough to record with Pat Tomek (The Rainmakers) at his home studio. Pat is an excellent drummer and did incredible work engineering and mixing each song in addition to lending his powerful drums to the mix.

The cherry on top was having Duane Trower master the album at Weights & Measures.

Jason loved collaborating with other musicians he admires: Caleb Ryan Martin, Kristin Hamilton, Michael Turnbo, Mark Verbeck, Marco Pascolini and Nathan Reeves Nall contribute their talents to the ep.

He released four albums under the moniker, “JohnnySuperColossal”. In September he’s taking his trailer to Nashville for three months then on to Los Angeles for three months to pursue music publishers and radio.

Shawn and Helen were introduced by Poet Jen Harris

Shawn Stewart writes: “In December, I had this crazy idea to form a band that was equal parts WWF and punk pop. It didn’t matter if the band could play, I just wanted flash and image and hopefully a lead singer with a massive personality who wasn’t too flat. The reception to my idea was lukewarm from most people. I decided to run the idea by Jen Harris though before giving up. She loved it and impressed upon me the importance of having each character develop a unique persona. She also told me Helen Proctor was the lead singer I needed.

Helen and I met. I told her we would record Spotify singles and schedule a series of faux shows which would consist of her kicking the crap out of a strategically placed actor each time: unruly sound tech, loud cell-phone talker and sometimes even physical altercations with me, the manager. As Jen had predicted, she loved the idea! She was quite enthusiastic and crafted the role of “hot lesbian lead singer who seduces the crowd and occasionally assaults men.”

We added Laura Fred (the perpetually intoxicated one) on drums and Phia (the broody quiet one) on bass. I gave Helen the song with which I wanted to lead- “I Want You”. We took black and whites of our first “show” a NYE house party at which Helen had beat some guy up for taking unauthorized pics. I received a series of Instant Messages from people disappointed they had not been invited to the house show and imploring me to invite them to see this spectacle of a band’s future outings.

As things progressed, it became clear that there was a lot of actual talent and musical compatibility within the fake band. The meetings organically turned into practices and we were jamming. We were writing new songs, bringing old songs to practice and reworking them together. Helen showed us an acoustic breakup song she’d written a few years back and now it’s a groovy reggae-punk tune. We added Rozz Petrozz on drums, Dylan McGonigle on guitar and with great reluctance, and mostly because Phia was leaving the country, me on bass.

Helkat is releasing the Spotify single of “I Want You” on May 31, and playing shows through August only before we lose Dylan to The Iowa Writers Workshop and Shawn to Nashville. Helkat is a meteor, not a planet.

[Sunshine Rock is the 13th solo album from American rock musician Bob Mould born Robert Arthur Mould on October 16, 1960. He is principally known for his work as guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter for alternative rock bands Hüsker Dü in the 1980s and Sugar in the 1990s. Born in Malone, New York Mould lived in several places, including the Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota area where he attended Macalester College. There, he formed Hüsker Dü in the late 1970s with drummer/singer Grant Hart and bass guitarist Greg Norton. Mould and Hart were the principal songwriters for Hüsker Dü, with Hart’s higher-pitched vocals and Mould’s baritone taking the lead in alternate songs. Though Mould’s sexual orientation had previously been something of an open secret, he was outed in the early 1990s in an interview in the music magazine Spin; he came to terms with being openly gay, even appearing in the movie Bear Nation, self-identifying as a bear. In April 2004, Mould was a co-organizer of the WEDRock benefit concert for Freedom to Marry. “WedRock” was a play on the word “wedlock”. The event raised an estimated US$30,000. Mould also contributed the song “See a Little Light” to the 2006 album Wed-Rock: A Benefit for Freedom to Marry, an album to support in the legalization of same-sex marriage. The sales allowed the independent label Olivia Records the ability to release music from a whole new movement of diverse female artists, all overlooked by mainstream music. Cris Williamson recently was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from The Americana Music Association. We loved seeing Cris Williamson in the American Masters PBS film Singing For Our Lives the story of Holly Near.

Cris is currently in rehearsal with friends Barbara Higbie and Teresa Trull.

The first show of their tour is this Friday in Portland.

Teresa Trull was brought up in Durham, North Carolina, where she was steeped at an early age in blues, gospel, and rhythm & blues, Teresa Trull began her musical career singing gospel in churches, then served as the lead singer in a rock & roll band for several years before joining the East Coast nightclub circuit. Since the release of her first album, The Ways a Woman Can Be, in 1977, Trull’s gutsy rock & roll vocal style and her songwriting and record production talents have won the fiery-haired singer an ever-widening recognition. In particular, Teresa’s collaboration with Barbara Higbie on their CD’s Unexpected and Playtime as well as her partnership with Cris Williamson on the CD Country Blessed have received wide critical acclaim. Other musicians with whom Trull has performed and recorded include Huey Lewis, Bonnie Hayes, David Sanborn, Andy Narell, Darol Anger, Mike Marshall, Alex DeGrassi, Joan Baez, Linda Tillery, Holly Near, the Topp Twins, Tami Neilson and Tracy Nelson. A songwriter of considerable note, Trull co-wrote two songs on the Whispers’ gold album Love for Love, including the title track, with Ray Obiedo, and her production talents were recognized by the New York Music Awards and featured in the industry standard Mix Magazine.

In 2011 Teresa moved to New Zealand to pursue her passion for horses and founded New Zealand Horse Help to help horses with their people problems. She has sung on stage at the Rugby World Cup and sung NZ’s national anthem in Maori and English for the World Cup Show Jumping Event.

Blessed with an endless supply of energy, Trull’s live performances have been said to combine the high power of Nona Hendryx with the irreverent wit of Bette Midler.

Barbara Higbie has been a professional musician since age 17, Barbara has played everything from Traditional Jazz, Bluegrass and Irish to New Classical Music, Blues, and African Pop. She is known for her ability to compose in a style that is both genre-bending and accessible. A Grammy-nominated, Grammy award-winning composer, pianist, fiddler, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Barbara Higbie has performed on more than 100 albums, including Carlos Santana’s 2007 release. Her latest solo release, 2014’s Scenes from Life was recorded at Lucas Films Skywalker Sound.

As a solo artist, Barbara’s first solo CD Signs of Life was named a Washington Post Top Ten of the Year. Four other solo releases, I Surrender, Variations on a Happy Ending and Alive in Berkeley and last years Scenes from Life followed to much critical acclaim. In 2011, Higbie was the first ever Artist in Residence at the prestigious west coast Jazz Club, Yoshi’s, where she created two new bands. Roots music, Hills to Hollers with icons Linda Tillery and Laurie Lewis, and the exotic Cello Heaven with cellists Joan Jeanreneau of Kronos Quartet fame and new age star, Jami Sieber.

Higbie has 13 solo and group recordings to her name, as well as contributions to 10 compilations that have sold in the millions. She was the first female instrumentalist to compose and record for Windham Hill Records, 1982’s Tideline, a duet project with violinist, Darol Anger. Tideline’s unique sound became an instant classic, thanks in part to Higbie’s innovative and moving compositions. One of her pieces from Tideline, True Story, was downloaded on Pandora in 2014 more than 850,000 times. In June of 2015, Tideline was re-issued on Adventure Records. 1984 was an important year when Higbie recorded with Anger, Mike Marshall and Andy Narrell, Live at the Montreux Jazz Festival for Windham Hill Records, a landmark genre-defining album. Her composition To Be became Montreux’s radio/VH-1 hit. She toured worldwide with Montreux until 1990.

These songs were all impeccably and professionally produced and have stood the test of time and could go up against any of the songs by Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, or James Taylor. Only difference is mainstream radio and television has almost completely ignored Cris Williamson. Despite this injustice, through her amazing voice, and spirit, and open heart, Cris has helped make the world a better place for all female and LGBTQIA artists who follow the path she cleared. From http://www.smithsonianmag.com – Ginny Berson belonged to the Furies collective, a radical, separatist household that published journals, taught classes, and advocated communal living apart from men. Judy Dlugacz, 20, had postponed law school to pursue lesbian activism and was interested in finding an economically workable means of serving the women’s community. Performing as a folk musician at area clubs and coffeehouses, Meg Christian was eager to meet other women songwriters like Cris Williamson—who had released her first album in 1964 at age 16.

When Williamson came on tour to D.C., Christian and Berson not only arranged to bring other women’s music fans to the concert; in a gesture that changed history, they also scheduled a follow-up interview on Georgetown University’s “Radio Free Women” program. On the show, Berson spoke about how she and other members of the Furies collective were searching for a bigger project to invest in— “something that’s for women, by women, and supported by women’s money”—and Williamson responded with a simple yet provocative suggestion, “Why don’t you start a women’s record company?”

Cris Williamson recorded her first record in 1964 at the age of 16. She has been releasing music for over 50 years.

In the last 17 years Cris has released 11 full length albums ( a few of those were double albums). That works out to being a new album every year and half.

[Barbara Higbie (born 1958) is a Grammy nominated, Bammy award winning pianist, composer, violinist, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. She has played on over 65 CDs including 3 tunes on the recent Carlos Santana CD. A longtime Windham Hill recording artist, she has also recorded for Olivia/Second Wave records and Slowbaby Records. She resides in the San Francisco Bay Area with her family. She is a folk, jazz, pop, and fusion singer-songwriter, noted for her highly melodic, jazz/folk piano performances. She has toured nationally and internationally since the early 1980s. An early recording artist on the Windham Hill record label, she formed and played with the group Montreux along with Darol Anger, Mike Marshall, Todd Phillips, and Michael Manring. She recorded a critically acclaimed album titled Unexpected with singer Teresa Trull in 1983, which was included in The Boston Globe’s Guide to Best Albums of 1983. Higbie and Trull teamed up again in 1997 to record an album titled Playtime. Since 1990, Barbara Higbie has released a number of solo albums on the Windham Hill and Slowbaby labels. She is known as a versatile and soulful musician. Born in Michigan and raised in Indiana, she spent several years as a teenager in Ghana with her family. She went to Mills College, attended the Sorbonne in Paris, and collected traditional music in West Africa on a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship. It was in Paris that she met Darol Anger and began a fruitful musical collaboration. Together they recorded the record Tideline (1982), one of the early successful records of Windham Hill. Two years later they led a group with three other musicians (Mike Marshall, Todd Phillips, and Andy Narrel) for the Montreux Jazz Festival. The concert was considered so successful that a recording made at the concert was released as a Windham Hill record (Live at Montreux–Darol Anger/Barbara Higbie Quintet) and a new group was formed. However, after two studio releases, Sign Language and Let Them Say, the group disbanded. Barbara occasionally collaborates with her Montreux colleagues. She has performed with Bonnie Raitt, Terry Riley, The Kronos Quartet, Jaron Lanier, Cris Williamson, Holly Near, Teresa Trull and Ferron. Barbara Higbie has an active performing schedule. In August 2006, she participated in the Windham Hill 30th Anniversary Concert. She spent 18 months living in Hawaii with her family and moved back to the San Francisco Bay Area in June 2009.]

Cris Williamson’s groundbreaking album, The Changer and the Changed, from 1975, became one of the best-selling independent releases of all time, selling over 500,000 copies. The sales allowed the independent label Olivia Records the ability to release music from a whole new movement of diverse female artists, all overlooked by mainstream music. Cris Williamson helped to forge a historic movement for women in the male dominated music industry, fostering the creation of completely female owned record labels, touring companies, and music festivals. [New Live album released just prior to her 80th birthday, and 10 years after her last live album, Mavis Staples Live: Hope at the Hideout, from 2008. A follow up to her 16th studio solo album, “If All I Was Was Black, from 2017. For Live in London, Mavis recorded with her touring band: Rick Holmstrom on guitar, music direction & backing vocals; Jeff Turmes on bass & backing vocals; Stephen Hodges on drums; Vicki Randle on backing vocals; and Donny Gerrard on backing vocals. This live album celebrates music from her last 5 studio albums, released in the last nine years, with songs written by Jeff Tweedy, M. Ward, Benjamin Booker, Ben Harper, Curtis Mayfield, Talking Heads, Roebuck “Pops” Staples, Justin Vernon. This track was written by George Clinton & Ernie Harris and recorded for “Maggot Brain,” the third studio album by the Funkadelic, released in 1971. Mavis Staples is a legend. She is a gospel R&B singer, actress and civil rights activist, born in Chicago, Illinois on July 10, 1939. She has recorded and performed with her family’s band The Staple Singers. She began her career with her family group in 1950. Initially singing locally at churches, appearing on a weekly radio show, the Staples scored a hit in 1956 with “Uncloudy Day” for the Vee-Jay label. When Mavis graduated from what is now Paul Robeson High School in 1957, The Staple Singers took their music on the road. Led by family patriarch Roebuck “Pops” Staples on guitar and including the voices of Mavis and her siblings Cleotha, Yvonne, and Purvis, the Staples were called “God’s Greatest Hitmakers.” With Mavis’ voice and Pops’ songs, singing, and guitar playing, the Staples evolved from enormously popular gospel singers (with recordings on United and Riverside as well as Vee-Jay) to become the most spectacular and influential spirituality-based group in America. By the mid-1960s The Staple Singers, inspired by Pops’ close friendship with Martin Luther King, Jr., became the spiritual and musical voices of the civil rights movement. They covered contemporary pop hits with positive messages, including Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall” and a version of Stephen Stills’ “For What It’s Worth”. Mavis!, the first feature documentary about Staples and the Staple Singers, directed by Jessica Edwards, had its world premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival in March 2015. Mavis! was screened in theaters and on HBO in February 2016. Staples was briefly married to Spencer Leak in 1964; they divorced when Staples would not end her music career to stay home. She has no children. In the 2015 documentary Mavis! she reveals that Bob Dylan once proposed to her, and she turned him down. This song was oroginally included on Mavis Staples’ 2013 release One True Vine, her 13th studio album, and the second on which she collaborated with record producer and Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy. Tweedy also played most of the instruments on the album, with the exception of the drums, which were played by his son, Spencer Tweedy. The album was recorded at the Wilco Loft in Chicago, and while working on it, Staples commuted back and forth between the Loft (on Chicago’s North Side) and her home on Chicago’s South Side.]

3. Shy Boys – “Dim The Light”

[New single release and follow up to the band’s second album and Polyvinyl debut, Bell House. Shy Boys line-up consists of brothers Collin Rausch and Kyle Rausch, Konnor Ervin, Kyle Little and Ross Brown. The group formed shortly after the trio became roommates in 2012. Kyle Rausch and Konnor Ervin were already band mates in the indie-pop band The ACBs and Collin had been playing for years in the Kansas City area in various bands. The three shared a love for 1960s era pop rock and soon started writing their own music. In 2014 they released the self-titled Shy Boys on High Dive Records. The album received generally positive reviews and the single “Bully Fight” was featured on Spin.com. In June 2014 the band recorded and released two more singles and one of them, “Life Is Peachy,” was featured on Stereogum. On April 4th, 2018, it was announced that the band had signed to Polyvinyl Record Co.]

4. Kasey Rausch – “City Strangers”

[From http://www.kaseyrausch.com: Released on the night of her 30th birthday, “Born Near the Waters…” is the first full album released by Kasey Rausch. It was recorded by Mike West at the 9th Ward Pickin’ Parlor in New Orleans, Louisiana over three hot muggy days – July 3, 4 & 5 2004. Breaks from the studio were spent on top of the now infamous levy broken by the forces of Hurricane Katrina. Kasey’s husband, Travis Huffhines (mandolin) and two of her dear friends, Mikal Shapiro (harmonies, percussion, clarinet) and Joel Kraft (vocals), recorded by day and gigged by night. The result is a raw, un-mastered recording that reflects the once youthful songwriting and vocal styles of Rausch. Guest musicians include Grammy nominee Gina Forsyth on fiddle, Mike West on banjo, mandolin, acoustic guitar and Katie West on upright bass (Truckstop Honeymoon). // Kasey Rausch is a 5th generation songwriter & musician, co-producer/host of roots music radio show River Trade Radio on KKFI 90.1FM Kansas City Community Radio and former host of Campfire on DittyTV (Memphis, TN). 5. Laura Spiegel – “Strand of Life (“Viroid”)”

[Laurie Spiegel’s second full-length album, Unseen Worlds, arrived just over ten years after her debut album. Having realized the pieces found on The Expanding Universe (1980) on an instrument no longer available to her, the GROOVE System at Bell Laboratories, Spiegel moved on to composing and developing for the Alles Machine, alphaSyntauri, McLeyvier and various other instruments before creating an instrument entirely her own. Spiegel created “Music Mouse – An Intelligent Instrument” on a Macintosh 512k so that she could have an instrument that was not general purpose but a small, specialized, and well defined musical instrument for and by her that she did not have to compromise on or risk losing access to it. While it was a very personal instrument for Spiegel, demand among friends and colleagues nevertheless grew until “Music Mouse – An Intelligent Instrument” became a commercial product for the Macintosh, Amiga, and Atari personal computers with a devoted popular following that continues to this day, despite the obsoletion of those platforms. At the time of her Unseen Worlds album’s original release in 1991, the issuing record label turned out to be going out of business, dissolved and disappeared, sending the album immediately into obscurity. Outside of a private CD edition issued by Spiegel on her own Aesthetic Engineering label in 1994, this new edition represents the first proper commercial release of Unseen Worlds. “Unseen Worlds is not so much based on melody and rhythm as it is on textures, pulses, and sonic environments. Sometimes dark, sometimes light, its drama pulls in the adventurous listener who wants to take a musical journey. [Follow up to her 2016 EP Warning Sign of True Love. Influenced by Hip Hop, Rock, Jazz, Soul & R&B, Mae C is making her mark as an independent artist in the Kansas City music scene. A self-acclaimed black girl nerd, she originally planned on becoming an engineer and studied computer design at Lincoln University of Missouri. After leaving Lincoln to pursue her true passion of singing and songwriting, she finds that her techy side impacts how she writes music. “As a kid, I was always picking things apart and figuring out how to put them back together,” she said. “As an artist, I do the same thing – I pick apart my favorite singers to discover what made them great so I can walk in their footsteps.” With Kansas City becoming a place of movement for arts and entertainment, Mae C says now is the time to reinvent the wheel, break barriers, build bridges, but most of all support each other. “Supporting each other is the secret to rising to the top and putting the town on the map”, says Mae C. 8. Mercury Rev – “Reunion feat. Rachel Goswell”

[Rachel Ann Goswell was born May 16, 1971. She is an English singer-songwriter and musician who rose to prominence as vocalist and guitarist of the shoegaze band Slowdive, which formed in 1989. Goswell, along with Neil Halstead, Ian McCutcheon and former Chapterhouse member Simon Rowe became Mojave 3 when Slowdive transitioned to a more country/folk rock style. She released a solo album in 2004, titled Waves Are Universal on 4AD Records. // It slipped out of a Mississippi of hot biscuits, genteel table manners and working-class sense, suddenly overturned by a grave sinning and suicide. Carried on an evening breeze of strings and a supple, foreboding voice like sensually charged breath, “Ode to Bilie Joe”—Bobbie Gentry’s 1967 debut as a singer-songwriter and a Number One single for three weeks in the late Summer of Love—was the most psychedelic record of that year not from San Francisco or London, as if Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Brian Wilson had conspired to make a country-rock Pet Sounds. Except Gentry, just 23 when she wrote the song, got there first, in miniature. // Gentry’s hit was a revolutionary act, a quietly thorough feminism in vision, deed and success amid the strict, paternal order of the country-music industry. And it was her license to thrill again. In October, 1967, while “Billie Joe” was still in the Top Five, Gentry began recording The Delta Sweete, a connected set of a dozen songs that extended the narrative dynamics of that single with personal reflection and set her folk-siren charisma in a richer frame of dream-state orchestration, swamp-rock guitars and big-city-R&B horns. // In her eight original songs for the album, Gentry drew from her childhood and church life on her grandparents’ farm in Chickasaw County, Mississippi: the girl-ish craving for a beautiful dress in “Reunion”; the rise-and-shine of “Mornin’ Glory”; the stern Sunday lessons in “Sermon,” based on a traditional hymn also known as “Run On.” The covers were boldly chosen: Mose Allison’s chain-gang blues “Parchman Farm”; “Tobacco Road”’s litany of trial; the Cajun pride in Doug Kershaw’s “Louisiana Man”. Gentry also turned them to new purpose and even gender. “Gonna get myself a man, one gonna treat me right,” she sang in Jimmy Reed’s “Big Boss Man” with heated assurance. // But The Delta Sweete—released in March, 1968, only three months after Dylan’s John Wesley Harding and right as the Byrds came to Nashville to cut Sweetheart of the Rodeo—was too soon in its precedence. Gentry’s LP, the first country-rock opera, was ignored on arrival, not even cracking Billboard’s Top 100. It was as if Billie Joe had risen out of the Tallahatchie River and thrown that record off the bridge instead. // This Delta Sweete is her long-delayed justice—Mercury Rev’s committed and an affectionate resurrection of an album that anticipated by three decades their own pivotal expedition through transcendental America, 1998’s Deserter’s Songs. From their recording lair in New York’s Catskill Mountains, the founding core of Jonathan Donahue and Grasshopper with Jesse Chandler (previously in the Texas group Midlake) honor Gentry’s foresight and creative triumph with spacious invention and hallucinatory air. And they are not alone. Gentry’s stories and original resolve are brought to new vocal life and empowerment by a vocal cast of women from across modern rock and its alternative paths: among them, Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval; Laetitia Sadier, formerly of Stereolab; Marissa Nadler; Margo Price, the fiery new country star with a punk-rock heart; and Norway’s Susanne Sundfør, who cuts through “Tobacco Road” with arctic-Nico poise. Phoebe Bridgers, whose first record was a softly stunning 2015 single for Ryan Adams’ PAX AM label, hovers through the acid- western suspense of Gentry’s “Jessye’ Lisabeth” with floating calm, like a comforting angel. // On the 1968 LP, Gentry opened with a call to jubilant order, “Okolona River Bottom Band,” like she was leading a barn-dance union of the early Rolling Stones and Louis Armstrong’s Hot Five. Norah Jones takes that entrance here with her own sultry command, like Sarah Vaughan at the head of a slow-blooming choir. In “Sermon,” Price—who has known real struggle up close—sings like a survivor through Mercury Rev’s explosion of color and groove: a specialty throughout the band’s history as recently as 2015’s The Light in You, going back through All Is Dream in 2001, the whirling iridescent soul of 1995’s See You on the Other Side and the sumptuous turbulence of the 1992 single “Car Wash Hair.” // Gentry is still very present in the changes. Her seesaw of pride and hurt in the melancholy blur of “Penduli Pendulum” (“When goodbye serves as/My one amusement”) is even more explicit with the seasoned intimacy of Vashti Bunyan—a once-elusive voice from Britain’s psychedelic-folk boom—set against the younger, brighter arc of Kaela Sinclair, now in the electronic project M83. And in “Courtyard,” a despairing finale of strings and guitar arpeggios on Gentry’s LP, Mercury Rev build a striking Delta Krautrock in which the English singer Beth Orton wanders, like Gentry, through a ruin of profound loss and treasured memory. // “Ode to Billie Joe” was not on the ‘68 Delta Sweete. But Mercury Rev go back to that dinner table with Lucinda Williams of Lake Charles, Louisiana, and it is an inspired bond, calling up the ghosts and questions of a South still very much with us. Indeed, Gentry—who retired from recording and performing in the Seventies—reportedly lives only a couple hours’ drive from the bridge that made her famous, while the spirits she set loose in The Delta Sweete are as restless and compelling as they were 50 years ago. This album is a loving tribute to that achievement, one of the greatest albums you have never heard. It is also a dozen new ways to walk that land. -David Fricke]

Claire Adams is a critically acclaimed bassist, guitarist, singer, and songwriter. In the last year we have played musical tracks from Appropriate Grammar, Claire Adams and the Crowded Stage, The Classical Revolution, and Katy Guillen & The Girls all recordings and performing projects where Claire was essential, as a singer, songwriter and musician. Claire Adams has released multiple EPs and albums with each of these musical entities, while also releasing her very own solo EPs and solo albums too. Over the last 10 years Claire has traveled all around the world performing music, and “honing her melodic instincts and vision” in multiple genres of rock, blues, folk, americana, pop, jazz, and big band. At the center of all of this work is Claire’s beautiful and expressive voice, and her generous spirit and openness to collaborate, allowing oportunites for new younger musicians and producers to gain experience. Claire Studied Music Business at Belmont University and grew up in Topeka, Kansas.

Kansas City based Alyssa Bell is part if the string quartet Rewound. She is the Founder and Executive Director for Classical Revolution KC. Alyssa also serves as Adjunct Professor of High Strings at Northwest Missouri State University. Alyssa received her Master of Music in Performance/ Viola at Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Maryland and her undergraduate degree in Music education at the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance.

Wick Thomas grew up in Drexel Missouri and graduated from UMKC. Wick is an urban pioneer who is also a gardener, a student, a teacher, a librarian and an activist. Wick was voted Best Activist by The Pitch Magazine. Wick has help organize LGBTQIA youth groups on college campuses and in High Schools, he served as President of EQUAL and won an award from the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. Wick spent many years working for the Kansas City Public Library and then the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art. Recently Wick was a guest artist for The Band That Fell To Earth – A Tribute To David Bowie at recordBar. Appropriately Wick interpreted the Bowie classic, “Rebel Rebel.” Wick Thomas, is lead singer for the punk rock band Wick and The Tricks. In late 2017, Wick & The Tricks, released a 7-inch vinyl, 4-song EP debut called “Not Enough,” on Black Site Records.

In 2006, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force gave Thomas a Creating Change Award for establishing a chapter of the Gay-Straight Alliance in 2004 while he was a student at Paola High School. He’s also been involved in bike activism, has volunteered for the ACLU and Greenpeace, and founded the local environmental group TWIG (Think Work Inspire Grow).

Wick Thomas is also involved in Shadow-casting for The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Frank Alvarez on the February 20, 2019 edition of Wednesday MidDay Medley.

I first met Frank Alvarez in the mid 1990s. Frank was working as a manager and music buyer for Recycled Sounds at Westport Road & Main Street. Before that Frank ran his own record store, Abba Zappa. When Recycled Sounds closed in 2006, Frank was part of a special radio show we produced on Wednesday MidDay Medley, featuring testimonials from past and present Recycled Sounds employees, and playlist created by Recycled Sounds Staff reflecting stories of the time Prince came into the store, or the multiple bus trips the store organized to see The Pixies, or the many cultural events that were connected to this special place. The Radio show also included live interviews with Frank, Kasey Rausch, Kurt von Schlemmer, Iris DeMent and Anne Winter herself, who helped to produced and coordinate the show.

It seemed like the end of an era for music. The end of vinyl. The end of brick and morter music stores. Frank went on to work for Vinyl Renaissance, one of the only record stores left in the metro, besides Zebedee’s on 39th, It’s A Beautiful Day, and Vinyl Underground at Seventh Heaven. Seven years passed, and then something happened, vinyl made a comeback. Mills Records Company opened in 2013, Records With Merritt opened in 2014, Zebedee’s closed and reopened as Revolution Records in the Crossroads, Josey Records opened at 19th & Oak St.; FM Music opened on East 18th St; Brothers Records & Music opened on Johnson Drive in Mission; and Gotwhatulike at 11601 Hickman Mills Drive opened in July 2014. Record Stores were opening and thriving again, creating that needed community space for music lovers, bands, and vinyl collectors.

Last Fall, Frank Alvarez and longtime friend James Oshel opened Sister Anne’s – Records and Coffee, at 901 East 31st Street, in Kansas City. Sister Anne’s sells used records, new local releases, posters, stereos, and coffee, and was named after Anne Winter who owned Recycled Sounds, one of Kansas City’s most treasured record stores, where both Frank and James worked. Since then their business is growing. They have welcomed many in-store concerts, and this weekend are presenting, Lenny Lashley’s Gang Of One, on Friday, Feb. 22, at 6:30 PM, with The Uncouth and Red Kate, hosted by Teenage Heart Records.

Sister Anne’s – Records and Coffee is two blocks west of Troost, at 901 East 31st Street.

James Oshel and Frank Alvarez had talked about starting a record store when they were roommates and working together at Recycled Sounds. When Recycled Sounds closed, in 2006, Frank Alvarez went to work at Vinyl Renaissance, and Jim Oshel at Broadway Cafe.

10 years passed by, and then the owner of Windhorse Tattoo, Mark Galloway, who had worked with Jim Oshel at Mercy Seat Tattoo, let his friend know he was moving and there would be extra space in the building. This was the spark that ignited Oshel and Alvarez moving into action to open their own place.

Frank Alvarez and Jim Oshel decided to open a record store and a coffee house and were motivated to name after Anne Winter, owner of Recycled Sounds, who died in 2009.

Recycled Sounds operated from 1988 to 2006. Anne Winter and husband Kurt Von Schlemmer, were integral to the Kansas City Music scene. Anne Winter was a co-founder of the Kansas City Free Speech Coalition, and the brain child behind the annual Culture Under Fire, a week and sometimes two week festival of music, art, performance, guest speakers and writing and publishing events centered around the 1st Amendment and freedom of speech. Recycled Sounds was home to many bands and a meeting place.

Frank told Aaron Rhodes in a Pitch Kansas City article published on December 26, 2018, “I want to do what Anne taught us to do,” Alvarez says. “She taught us to just be good people, help people find the music they’re looking for, provide a space in Kansas City where they can find out about music, come in and talk about music, and just do what we can for the whole scene.”

Frank ran his own record store, Abba Zappa, three blocks away from Recycled Sounds. As is usually the case record stores are generally friendly with each other, as studies prove that the more record stores in a community the more business for all. Frank and Anne were friends. Frank had been second guessing his decision to run his own store when at one point Anne Winter visited Anna Zappa and offered to buy him out, bringing his inventory , and he himself into Recycled Sounds. Alvarez accepted the offer.

Frank told Aaron Rhodes of The Pitch Kansas City, (When Anne hired me), “At that point, I was about 10 years in the game already, and I thought, ‘I know everything,’” Alvarez says. “I went to work for her and learned so much more.”

Anne Winter was one of the people who helped start 90.1 FM KKFI. She served on the Board of Directors and hosted Kansas City first ever Punk Rock show on the radio called Little “Orphan Annie.” Alvarez told Aaron Rhodes about the wide variety of music that could be found at Recycled Sounds. “There was someone there that specialized in every kind of music,” he says. “There was the hip-hop person, the punk rock person, there was a person that knew classic rock. Every base was covered.”

Frank Alvarez and Jim Oshel have been working diligently, building up the physical space and inventory, installing turn tables with coffee and espresso machines for their new business of Sister Anne’s – Records and Coffee. They are open from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM.The shop is hosting in-stores. Their opening featured Hipshot Killer and Emmaline Twist. Sister Anne’s – Records and Coffee has a big back room that serves as an all-ages venue.

Aaron Rhodes in his Pitchweekly feature called the Sister Anne’s “Winterlike — warm, friendly, knowledgeable.” “This is the only thing I’ve done since 1985,” Alvarez says. “I get up and come to a record store. That’s what I do.”

[25 year old Una Walkenhorst is a singer/songwriter from Kansas City, Missouri. Following the release of her debut album “Scars” in 2014, Una immediately had “new fans. . . coming out of the proverbial woodwork” (AXS). Paired with refreshingly raw vocals, Una’s heartfelt lyrics “will stop you in your tracks (at once beautiful and chilling),” wrote Gilded Palace Radio, as she weaves stories of genuine human experience. Una told KCUR FM that her father was one of the people who made her love music. But having a famous father can be challenging: “I knew that if I started my music career here I would have a lot of opportunities, but not all of them would be because of my music. They would be because I am someone’s daughter,” Walkenhorst says. Loading up her 97 Honda Civic, Una then spent a year traveling across North America promoting her music and connecting with listeners one-on-one. She ended up living in New Orleans. Una Walkenhorst is the youngest daughter of Bob Walkenhorst, a founding member of The Rainmakers, which had national and international hits in the 1980s and 90s, and continue to this day touring and recording new music. In January of 2018 Una Walkenhorst returned home to Kansas City from New Orleans. Over the past several years, Una and Bob had performed together at selected events, including Folk Alliance International. This year the father and daughter duo decided to record an album together, where they split the difference, taking turns as songwriters for the album’s songs, written individually, and recorded together, in clear beautiful harmonies, with that extra special shared musical DNA, that can be heard in the harmonies of The Carter Family, Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear, or Shy Boys.]

3. Mary Gauthier – “Got Your Six”

[Brand new collection of songs by Mary Gauthier, co-written with U.S. veterans and their families, through Songwriting With Soldiers, a non-profit organization that pairs US veterans with professional songwriters. These songs are a glimpse inside the hearts and souls of both male and female soldiers, and their spouses. From Pop Matters: “SongwritingWith:Soldiers is an organization founded by songwriter Darden Smith that holds retreats pairing wounded veterans with established songwriters to help them to find a voice to express their experiences and through their sharing work towards emotional and spiritual healing. Songwriters who have participated in the program include Beth Nielsen Chapman, Marshall Crenshaw, Radney Foster, and Amy Speace, and some of the songs produced have been recorded by major country artists including Willie Nelson, Trisha Yearwood, Luke Bryan, and Garth Brooks. Mary Gauthier is a natural to serve as a contributor to this cause, her powerful autobiographical songwriting on past records addressing such topics as addiction, abandonment, and the search for meaning amidst pain. Turning her empathetic ear to the plights of others, she guides a group of veterans and their families through the composition of 11 highly effective and affecting songs. Of the experience, Gauthier writes “None of the veterans are artists. They don’t write songs; they don’t know that songs can be used to move trauma. Their understanding of song doesn’t include that. For me, it’s been the whole damn deal. Songwriting saved me. It’s what I think the best songs do, help articulate the ineffable, make the invisible visible, creating resonance, so that people (including the songwriter) don’t feel alone.” Gauthier was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. Born to a mother she never knew and left in St Vincent’s Women and Infants Asylum, Gauthier was adopted when she was a year old by an Italian Catholic couple from Thibodaux, Louisiana. At age 15, she ran away from home, and spent the next several years in drug rehabilitation, halfway houses, and living with friends; she spent her 18th birthday in a jail cell. Struggling to deal with being adopted, she used drugs and alcohol. These experiences provided fodder for her songwriting later on. Spurred on by friends, she enrolled at Louisiana State University as a philosophy major, dropping out during her senior year. After attending the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts, she opened a Cajun restaurant in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood, Dixie Kitchen (also the title of her first album). Mary ran, and cooked at, the restaurant for eleven years. She was arrested for drunk driving opening night, July 12, 1990, and has been sober ever since. After achieving sobriety, she was driven to dedicate herself full-time to songwriting, and embarked upon a career in music. She wrote her first song at age 35. She sold her share in the restaurant to finance her second album, Drag Queens in Limousines, in 1998. The summer of the release of this album, she was invited to play 11 major folk festivals, including the Newport Folk Festival. Drag Queens in Limousines won in The 1st Annual Independent Music Awards for Folk/Singer-Songwriter Song, and she was nominated for Best New Artist of the year by the Boston Music Awards. She was nominated for three Gay and Lesbian American Music Awards (GLAMA) and won best country artist of the year. In 2002 her third album, Filth and Fire, was named “Best Indy CD of the year” by Jon Pareles of The New York Times. She moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 2001 and secured a publishing deal with Harlan Howard Songs, then secured a record deal with Lost Highway, a division of Universal Music, in 2003. Her first major label release, in 2005, Mercy Now was on the top 10 list for the year in dozens of publications, including The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Daily News, and Billboard Magazine.]

4. Krystle Warren & The Faculty – “Every Morning”

[Krystle Warren’s double album: Love Songs – A Time You May Embrace & Love Songs – A Time to Refrain from Embracing came from a 13 day recording session in Brooklyn, where she recorded the 24 songs live with 28 musicians including her band, The Faculty, alongside choirs, horn and string sections. Krystle wrote the songs, and produced the vinyl release. Originally from Kansas City, Krystle learned to play the guitar by listening to Rubber Soul & Revolver from The Beatles. Krystle graduated from Paseo Arts Academy in 2001 and began her musical career collaborating with area jazz and pop musicians. After living in San Francisco and NYC, Krystle was signed to a French label, Because Music, and moved to Paris to release “Circles” in 2009. Krystle played French and British television programs, including Later with Jools Holland, garnering critical acclaim and traveling all over the world with Rufus Wainwright, Nick Cave, Norah Jones, and Joan As Police Woman. Krystle created, Parlour Door Music, to release “Love Songs.” Krystle release her last album, Three The Hard Way on Parlour Door Music on August 18, 2017. Produced by Krystle Warren and Ben Kane (D’Angelo, Emily King, PJ Morton). Recorded, engineered, and mixed by Ben Kane. Written & performed by Krystle Warren. For this record Krystle decided to play every instrument and vocals & back up vocals, “playing bass, drums, lap steel, piano, guitar, and vocals directly to analog tape. She and Ben Kane recorded in Villetaneuse, France, a small town on the outskirts of Paris in a vintage 70s era studio that offered just the right, rich sound to suggest the musical foundation for the record, and to do justice to the duo’s carefully balanced arrangements.” Three The Hard Way was #1 on WMM’s 117 Best Recordings of 2017.]

Since 2014 we have been celebrating the music of Calvin Arsenia who came home to KC after living in Edinburgh, Scotland, and has released the EPs, Moments, Prose, and last year his full length debut, Catastrophe, and a LIVE recording from Greenwood Social Hall. This year he released the EP Caviar to special guests who attended his show at Wickstock West in West Bottoms. Standing at 6 foot 6 inches, Arsenia’s powerful vocals span a 3.5 octave range, while playing piano, banjo, guitar and harp. Emmaline Twist got started in early 2016 when Krysztof Nemeth, former baritone guitarist in The Latenight Callers, started collaborating with Meredith McGrade, a veteran of several Kansas City bands, including Admiral Red, Wick and The Tricks, and The B’Dinas. Krysztof told Timothy Finn of The Kansas City Star, “Meredith and I got started in trying to capture the sound and feel of the music we mutually loved: post-punk and shoegaze,” Nemeth said. “Meredith initially played bass and sang, while I employed the baritone guitar as the lead instrument.”

Jonathan Knecht, formerly of the Silver Maggies, came along as drummer.

Kristin Conkright, formerly of Knife Crime and Onward Crispin Glover, was looking for a project. During the very first The Band That Fell to Earth – Bowie Tribute Show, at The Uptown Theatre, in January 2016, Kristin approached Krysztof asking what he was working on and asked if he needed a bassist. Krzysztof liked her sound and thought it would fit the Emmaline Twist vision. McGrade moved to guitar and Conkright came aboard as bassist.

Alex Alexander & The Band That Fell To Earth

Recently, Alex Alexander, of The Band That Fell to Earth, has joined the band on synthesizers, becoming the 5th member.

In 2017 the band released “Dissimulation 1,” four songs in digital format, their first since 2016’s single release of “Vega” b/w “Moon Eyes.”

The band’s new 12″ LP is being released by Black Site Records, a label started by members of the band Red Kate, who have had a busy couple of years releasing music from Red Kate, Chess Club, Truckstop Love, Wick and The Tricks, and others.

Earlier this season, Emmaline Twist became the second official release of the eat.hear.records, limited edition 7″ vinyl single series, with the tracks: “Vega” and “Moon Eyes.” These were the band’s original first two digital releases.

Teri Quinn is a Kansas City based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan. Teri moved to Kansas City in 2009 to study Clarinet Performance and Music Composition at the University Of Missouri Kansas City’s Conservatory of Music where she graduated in 2013. We first met Teri playing clarinet and guitar for Claire and the Crowded Stage. Teri is also a jewelry designer and her business is calle Rattlebone Design. Teri calls herself, “A Northern girl with a Southern heart living in the Mid-West.” Teri has also contributed experimental compositions for The Black House Collective, andin 2016 released her debut EP, Moons and Meltdowns.

Tyson Schroeder is an illustrator and fine artist. Over the last 20 years he has created images for bands, galleries, theatre companies, book illustrations and covers, periodicals, and Zim’s Sauces. Tyson has had works included in group and solo shows in KC, Boston, Salem, Portland, Houston and Nashville, and in museum shows about band posters, as he has created posters for, The Dresden Dolls, Unsane, Fiona Apple, and Season to Risk. Tyson has worked with puppets, sculpture, and improv performance, spoken word, and theatre as an actor, designer, and playwright. Tyson is also a musician, who plays in the band Medicine Theory.

Krysztof Nemeth moved back to the Kansas City area from Seattle, Washington, 10 years ago. He is a published artist who has work specializing in fetish, gothic, retro, and low-brow kulture pin-up illustration. Krysztof has created saucy pin-up girls for everything from bands to burlesque troupes, gallery shows to rock shows, and clothing stores to private commissions. He work is in shows all over the country. Krysztof is also a father. He was one of the founders and lead guitarist for the band The Latenight Callers who released their critically acclaimed EP Easy Virtues in 2012 and the full length album, Songs for Stolen Moments in 2013. Krysztof os also the founder and baritone guitarist for Emmaline Twist, who are releasing their full length debut album, Dissimulation on Black Site Records, on Friday, August 24, at 8:00 PM, at recordBar, 1520 Grand, with Mysterious Clouds & Sona.

Brown grew up in small town rural Kansas and describes having a “dreamers disease” from a very young age. He quotes Kerouac, Woody Guthrie, and Waldo Emerson for developing his curiosity about being a “life long freedom seeker.” The notion of “self obtained freedom” is the central issue at the heart of Wade D. Brown’s music. With primary influences from pre-war delta and ragtime blues, medicine show music, bluegrass, vaudeville, and country folk, Wade D. 3. Yo La Tengo – “Esportes Casual”

[15th album from band formed in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1984. Since 1992, the lineup has consisted of Ira Kaplan (guitars, piano, vocals), Georgia Hubley (drums, piano, vocals), and James McNew (bass, vocals). In 2015, original guitarist Dave Schramm rejoined the band and appears on their f14th album, Stuff Like That There. Despite achieving limited mainstream success, Yo La Tengo has been called “the quintessential critics’ band” and maintains a strong cult following. They chose the name “Yo La Tengo” (Spanish for “I have it”; or referring to a female-gender object or person, also “I’ve Got Her”) in an effort to avoid any connotations in English. The name came from a baseball anecdote. During the 1962 season, New York Mets center fielder Richie Ashburn and Venezuelan shortstop Elio Chacón found themselves colliding in the outfield. When Ashburn went for a catch, he would scream, “I got it! I got it!” only to run into Chacón, who spoke only Spanish. Ashburn learned to yell, “¡Yo la tengo! ¡Yo la tengo!” instead. In a later game, Ashburn happily saw Chacón backing off. He relaxed, positioned himself to catch the ball, and was instead run over by left fielder Frank Thomas, who understood no Spanish and had missed a team meeting that proposed using the words “¡Yo la tengo!” as a way to avoid outfield collisions. After getting up, Thomas asked Ashburn, “What the hell is a Yellow Tango?”]

[On April 28 the band embarks on month-long European Tour, followed by dates in the states, then back to Europe.]

Praised by the New York Times as a “splendid player,” Argentinean bandoneónist Héctor Del Curto’s career has spanned more than 25 years and has encompassed traditional Tango, New Tango, Jazz, Classical and World music.

On Jan. 28, Del Curto just won the Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album as a member of the Pablo Ziegler Trio, for the album Jazz Tango.

As one of the world’s most sought-after bandoneónists, he has performed with luminaries across many musical genres, including the Tango legends Astor Piazzolla and Osvaldo Pugliese; Latin jazz giant Paquito D’Rivera; jazz violinist Regina Carter; saxophonist Joe Lovano; and violinist Cho-Liang Lin. He has appeared with such prestigious orchestras as the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Mobile Symphony and Buenos Aires Symphony Orchestra.

Originally from Montevideo, Uruguay, Gustavo Casenave is a pianist, composer, producer & educator. He has been called “one of the best pianists our country has” by Uruguayan newspaper Diario El Pais. He was a Latin Grammy nominee in 2012 and 2014.

He has toured throughout Europe, Asia, South America, Central America and United States, performing in the prestigious festivals and concert halls throughout the world. As a composer, Casenave has composed and arranged more than 200 works, including original music for movies. He received the prestigious Organization of American States scholarship to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he received the Professional Music Achievement award. His composition Fragiltimer for the Past Future was named one of 10 best original compositions from Berklee in the last 30 years.

“KC has proven that they love Jazz and Tango. We believe our community will relish in this concert of Piazzolla’s passionate music expertly combining his singular language of Tango with jazz and classical influences,” says Elizabeth Suh Lane, Artistic Director-Founder-violinist. “We are extremely fortunate to be sharing the stage with Hector and Gustavo. The virtuosity of our musicians and the searing music will sweep our listeners away to Buenos Aires for an experience that will last for much longer than one night!”

Brenton Cook studied Computer Science at Missouri University of Science and Technology, in Rolla, Missouri, where he also had his own college radio show. He formed the Kansas City independent music label, Haymaker Records in January 2014. The label has released multiple full length albums, from Monta At Odds, HMPH!, Be/Non, Jorge Arana Trio, Riala, Mysterious Clouds, Sie Lieben Maschinen, Schwervon!, and others. For the last 5 years, Brenton & Haymaker Records has co-sponsored & co-curated of the Outer Reaches Music Fest with Dedric Moore.

Dedric Moore launched this festival in 2012. The idea grew out of the music he was creating with his Brother Delaney Moore at the HQ Artspace in KCK. Dedric is a member of the bands Monta At Odds, Mysterious Clouds, and Gemini Revolution. He has also produced recordings for the Philistines and HMPH, and others.

Outer Reaches showcases the left-of-center, under-the-radar artists experimenting and pushing boundaries within their respective genres. Regional, national, and international touring acts comprise the annual fest, with previous appearances from Deerhoof, El Ten Eleven, and Magic Castles.

The show celebrates boundary-pushing music while emphasizing a broader geographic appeal, giving prominence to artists inspired by rhythms & traditional world instruments.

The show begins with a lecture and workshop on world percussion from Brandon Draper’s Drum Safari.

Other performers include Smoky Mountain banjo folk artist Teri Quinn;

Harptasia, a multi-harp project featuring Calvin Arsenia;

a solo set from Making Movies’ frontman Enrique Javier Chi;

and Afrobeat, funk, jazz, and soul group SUNU.

Live video projection will be provided by XO Blackwater;

DJ Memo will be play dance-friendly vinyl from around the globe between sets.

Outer Reaches Explores the World is a partnership between the festival and Midwest Music Foundation and has been made possible through a grant from the Kansas City Neighborhood Tourist Development Fund.

Midwest Music Foundation (MMF), a nonprofit organization founded in 2008, provides health care assistance, education, and resources to the Kansas City music community, and receive proceeds from ticket sales for the April 20 event.

The band draws their influences from the origins of their families: Santiago, Panama, and Kansas City, Missouri, and Guadalajara, Mexico. Upon their release of this album Making Movies kicked off a 22-date Immigrants Are Beautiful Tour, a celebration of solidarity in the face of fear-mongering and hate. Frontman Enrique Chi shared, “It’s time to realize we are all part of this continuum, this beautifully flawed human race that has migrated from every continent to bring us all the beauty we enjoy today.” The band’s social statement is straightforward enough that they can express it in four words: “We Are All Immigrants.” In supporting that cause, a portion of all proceeds from the album and tour go to the National Immigration Law Center. Enrique Chi, describes, “since making the album, the tides have shifted and the underbelly of systematic racism has reared its ugly head. Chris Teasley and Davin Watne share new music from their band Thee Devotion on the April 18, 2018 edition of Wednesday MidDay Medley on KKFI 90.1 FM.

Chris Teasley is an artist and musician. Chris is currently in several bands: The New Lost Souls, Heavy Figgs, Dynamite Defense and Thee Devotion and lends his musical skills to several other bands as well. He is also a painter. He studied at School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston

Davin Watne is also an artist and musician as well as an educator. He is a professor at UMKC where I teaches Painting and Drawing. He is a practicing artist that exhibits nationally, internationally and locally. He studied The Kansas City Art Institute.

Davin Watne plays guitar, keyboards, harmonica & sings in the KC based 4-piece band, Thee Devotions with Chris Teasely who plays keyboards, organ, harmonica, flute, trumpet, and sings. Thee Devotion’s released their new album Chapel on vinyl, on April 7, 2018

The two other members of Thee Devotion, Bruce Eddy who plays bass and sings; and Keith Patterson who plays drums and sings.

Davin told us the band first started in January 1, 2008, with Davin ad our drummer Keith Patterson. They formed Thee Devotion out of the ashes of our first band together called Emma Feel.

We both love Funk and Soul music and wanted to explore it more. So we brought on some other musicians to help fill out the sound and expand our vision.

The Devotion call their music: “chickenshack” & “garage soul”

Chapel is the band’s second record and was produced by Bill Honan who also played piano and moog.

Jesus Negron and Sean Branagan played percussion and David Williams played pedal steel on the record.

Marion is the creator of Records With Merritt, a small, independent, minority owned business, at 1614 Westport Rd. in Kansas City, Missouri.

[A soul/funk song written and composed by Kenneth Gamble, Leon Huff, & Anthony Jackson; recorded by Philadelphia soul group The O’Jays for the album Ship Ahoy. Produced by Gamble & Huff for Philadelphia International Records, “For the Love of Money” was issued as a single in late 1973 (see 1973 in music), with “People Keep Tellin’ Me” as its b-side. The single peaked at number three on the U.S. Billboard R&B chart, and at No. 9 on Billboard’s Pop Singles chart in spring 1974. Though the album version of the song was over seven minutes long, it received substantial radio airplay. The song’s title comes from a well-known Bible verse, 1 Timothy 6:10: “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” (This translation is from the King James Version of the Bible.) The O’Jays are an American R&B group from Canton, Ohio, formed in 1958 and originally consisting of Eddie Levert (born June 16, 1942), Walter Williams (born August 25, 1943), William Powell (Jan. 20, 1942 – May 26, 1977), Bobby Massey and Bill Isles. The O’Jays made their first chart appearance with “Lonely Drifter” in 1963, but reached their greatest level of success once Gamble & Huff, a team of producers and songwriters, signed them to their Philadelphia International label in 1972. With Gamble & Huff, the O’Jays (now a trio after the departure of Isles and Massey) emerged at the forefront of Philadelphia soul with “Back Stabbers” (1972), and topped the Billboard Hot 100 the following year with “Love Train”. Numerous other hits followed through the 1970s and into the 1980s and 1990s, and The O’Jays were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004, and The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.]

Red Kate is proud to announce the release of a new single on local label, Too Much Rock. As with all records in the Singles Series, this old-school, 45 rpm ripper contains one original track and one cover selected by the label. Side A, Iraqi Girl, is a grinding statement on American foreign policy, while side B follows suit with a cover of the TSOL song, American Zone. This frank indictment of how we treat those sent off to impose that foreign policy is as relevant today as it was in 1984. American Zone marks the first recording with the band’s newest member, rhythm guitarist Shaun Hamontree, whose contribution to the effort also includes his arresting, if not disturbing, cover art invoking the devastating reality of a war widow’s scrap book.

Both tracks were recorded at Weights and Measures Soundlab where engineer Duane Trower and producer L. Ron Drunkard have perfected Red Kate’s sonic signature. And like all 7” releases by the band, the covers were printed locally by the good folks of the Allied Printing and Trades Local 16C at Callender Printing in Kansas City, KS.

Red Kate will celebrate the release of the new record Friday, February 23 at Davey’s Uptown with Reacharounds from Springfield, MO, and up and comers, Arson Class and Vidco Kult. An all ages show is scheduled for Saturday, March 3 at Mills Record Company with the brand new Martian Martian Martian.

This limited edition release of 500 records includes 100 copies on clear vinyl with an alternate cover (collect away, nerds!). Distributed by Black Site, they will be available February 24 at record stores throughout the region and online at black-site.org/red-kate and redkate.bandcamp.com.

At 11:30 members of Red Kate share their new Too Much Rock – Singles Series, 7” vinyl 45 rpm release. Their original song, “Iraqi Girl,” is on side A, with a side B cover of TSOL’s,” American Zone,” the first recording with the band’s newest member, rhythm guitarist Shaun Hamontree. Both tracks were recorded at Weight and Measures Soundlab with engineer Duane Trower and producer L. Ron Drunkard. Red Kate celebrates the release of the new record Friday, February 23 at Davey’s Uptown with Reacharounds from Springfield, MO, Arson Class and Vidco Kult. The band also plays an all ages show Saturday, March 3 at Mills Record Company with Martian Martian Martian.
