[New Live album released just prior to her 80th birthday, and 10 years after her last live album, Mavis Staples Live: Hope at the Hideout, from 2008. A follow up to her 16th studio solo album, “If All I Was Was Black, from 2017. For Live in London, Mavis recorded with her touring band: Rick Holmstrom on guitar, music direction & backing vocals; Jeff Turmes on bass & backing vocals; Stephen Hodges on drums; Vicki Randle on backing vocals; and Donny Gerrard on backing vocals. This live album celebrates music from her last 5 studio albums, released in the last nine years, with songs written by Jeff Tweedy, M. Ward, Benjamin Booker, Ben Harper, Curtis Mayfield, Talking Heads, Roebuck “Pops” Staples, Justin Vernon. This track was written by George Clinton & Ernie Harris and recorded for “Maggot Brain,” the third studio album by the Funkadelic, released in 1971. Mavis Staples is a legend. She is a gospel R&B singer, actress and civil rights activist, born in Chicago, Illinois on July 10, 1939. She has recorded and performed with her family’s band The Staple Singers. She began her career with her family group in 1950. Initially singing locally at churches, appearing on a weekly radio show, the Staples scored a hit in 1956 with “Uncloudy Day” for the Vee-Jay label. When Mavis graduated from what is now Paul Robeson High School in 1957, The Staple Singers took their music on the road. Led by family patriarch Roebuck “Pops” Staples on guitar and including the voices of Mavis and her siblings Cleotha, Yvonne, and Purvis, the Staples were called “God’s Greatest Hitmakers.” With Mavis’ voice and Pops’ songs, singing, and guitar playing, the Staples evolved from enormously popular gospel singers (with recordings on United and Riverside as well as Vee-Jay) to become the most spectacular and influential spirituality-based group in America. By the mid-1960s The Staple Singers, inspired by Pops’ close friendship with Martin Luther King, Jr., became the spiritual and musical voices of the civil rights movement. They covered contemporary pop hits with positive messages, including Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall” and a version of Stephen Stills’ “For What It’s Worth”. Mavis!, the first feature documentary about Staples and the Staple Singers, directed by Jessica Edwards, had its world premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival in March 2015. Mavis! was screened in theaters and on HBO in February 2016. Staples was briefly married to Spencer Leak in 1964; they divorced when Staples would not end her music career to stay home. She has no children. In the 2015 documentary Mavis! she reveals that Bob Dylan once proposed to her, and she turned him down. This song was oroginally included on Mavis Staples’ 2013 release One True Vine, her 13th studio album, and the second on which she collaborated with record producer and Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy. Tweedy also played most of the instruments on the album, with the exception of the drums, which were played by his son, Spencer Tweedy. The album was recorded at the Wilco Loft in Chicago, and while working on it, Staples commuted back and forth between the Loft (on Chicago’s North Side) and her home on Chicago’s South Side.]

3. Shy Boys – “Dim The Light”

[New single release and follow up to the band’s second album and Polyvinyl debut, Bell House. Shy Boys line-up consists of brothers Collin Rausch and Kyle Rausch, Konnor Ervin, Kyle Little and Ross Brown. The group formed shortly after the trio became roommates in 2012. Kyle Rausch and Konnor Ervin were already band mates in the indie-pop band The ACBs and Collin had been playing for years in the Kansas City area in various bands. The three shared a love for 1960s era pop rock and soon started writing their own music. In 2014 they released the self-titled Shy Boys on High Dive Records. The album received generally positive reviews and the single “Bully Fight” was featured on Spin.com. In June 2014 the band recorded and released two more singles and one of them, “Life Is Peachy,” was featured on Stereogum. On April 4th, 2018, it was announced that the band had signed to Polyvinyl Record Co.]

4. Kasey Rausch – “City Strangers”

[From http://www.kaseyrausch.com: Released on the night of her 30th birthday, “Born Near the Waters…” is the first full album released by Kasey Rausch. It was recorded by Mike West at the 9th Ward Pickin’ Parlor in New Orleans, Louisiana over three hot muggy days – July 3, 4 & 5 2004. Breaks from the studio were spent on top of the now infamous levy broken by the forces of Hurricane Katrina. Kasey’s husband, Travis Huffhines (mandolin) and two of her dear friends, Mikal Shapiro (harmonies, percussion, clarinet) and Joel Kraft (vocals), recorded by day and gigged by night. The result is a raw, un-mastered recording that reflects the once youthful songwriting and vocal styles of Rausch. Guest musicians include Grammy nominee Gina Forsyth on fiddle, Mike West on banjo, mandolin, acoustic guitar and Katie West on upright bass (Truckstop Honeymoon). // Kasey Rausch is a 5th generation songwriter & musician, co-producer/host of roots music radio show River Trade Radio on KKFI 90.1FM Kansas City Community Radio and former host of Campfire on DittyTV (Memphis, TN). Her family and musical roots can be found in Parkville, Kansas City, the Missouri Ozarks, Winfield, Kansas (home of the legendary Walnut Valley Festival) and deep Southeast Texas. She tours nationally with pedal steel and guitar master Marco Pascolini as The Country Duo and plays locally with classic country honky tonkers The Naughty Pines and songwriter Scott Stanton. Rausch’s third album, Guitar in Hand (originally released on MudStomp Records 2014), debuted at #3 on the Roots Music Reporting charts and was voted one of the top three albums of the year by readers of The Pitch, KC’s weekly entertainment guide. She was named 2016 Best of the Northland Artist, 2013’s Female Performer of the Year by The Farmer’s Turnpike on KMXN 92.9 FM and is a four-time Pitch Music Award Nominee.]

5. Laura Spiegel – “Strand of Life (“Viroid”)”

[Laurie Spiegel’s second full-length album, Unseen Worlds, arrived just over ten years after her debut album. Having realized the pieces found on The Expanding Universe (1980) on an instrument no longer available to her, the GROOVE System at Bell Laboratories, Spiegel moved on to composing and developing for the Alles Machine, alphaSyntauri, McLeyvier and various other instruments before creating an instrument entirely her own. Spiegel created “Music Mouse – An Intelligent Instrument” on a Macintosh 512k so that she could have an instrument that was not general purpose but a small, specialized, and well defined musical instrument for and by her that she did not have to compromise on or risk losing access to it. While it was a very personal instrument for Spiegel, demand among friends and colleagues nevertheless grew until “Music Mouse – An Intelligent Instrument” became a commercial product for the Macintosh, Amiga, and Atari personal computers with a devoted popular following that continues to this day, despite the obsoletion of those platforms. At the time of her Unseen Worlds album’s original release in 1991, the issuing record label turned out to be going out of business, dissolved and disappeared, sending the album immediately into obscurity. Outside of a private CD edition issued by Spiegel on her own Aesthetic Engineering label in 1994, this new edition represents the first proper commercial release of Unseen Worlds. “Unseen Worlds is not so much based on melody and rhythm as it is on textures, pulses, and sonic environments. Sometimes dark, sometimes light, its drama pulls in the adventurous listener who wants to take a musical journey. Using computer software she wrote in order to implement a unique musical vision, Unseen Worlds blends the artistic and the technical, the cerebral and the sensual, and revives the virtually abandoned tradition of electronic music. Unseen Worlds is the work of a sonic explorer whose music can both challenge and caress. 7. Mae C – “Anxious”

[Follow up to her 2016 EP Warning Sign of True Love. Influenced by Hip Hop, Rock, Jazz, Soul & R&B, Mae C is making her mark as an independent artist in the Kansas City music scene. A self-acclaimed black girl nerd, she originally planned on becoming an engineer and studied computer design at Lincoln University of Missouri. After leaving Lincoln to pursue her true passion of singing and songwriting, she finds that her techy side impacts how she writes music. “As a kid, I was always picking things apart and figuring out how to put them back together,” she said. “As an artist, I do the same thing – I pick apart my favorite singers to discover what made them great so I can walk in their footsteps.” With Kansas City becoming a place of movement for arts and entertainment, Mae C says now is the time to reinvent the wheel, break barriers, build bridges, but most of all support each other. “Supporting each other is the secret to rising to the top and putting the town on the map”, says Mae C. She aspires to inspire other artists to capitalize in their craft by not putting themselves in a box. “I’m an African American woman, but I refuse to allow anyone to use that against me. I’m an artist & proud black girl and I deserve a chance at every opportunity just as anyone else,” she said..]

8. Mercury Rev – “Reunion feat. Rachel Goswell”

[Rachel Ann Goswell was born May 16, 1971. She is an English singer-songwriter and musician who rose to prominence as vocalist and guitarist of the shoegaze band Slowdive, which formed in 1989. Goswell, along with Neil Halstead, Ian McCutcheon and former Chapterhouse member Simon Rowe became Mojave 3 when Slowdive transitioned to a more country/folk rock style. She released a solo album in 2004, titled Waves Are Universal on 4AD Records. // It slipped out of a Mississippi of hot biscuits, genteel table manners and working-class sense, suddenly overturned by a grave sinning and suicide. Carried on an evening breeze of strings and a supple, foreboding voice like sensually charged breath, “Ode to Bilie Joe”—Bobbie Gentry’s 1967 debut as a singer-songwriter and a Number One single for three weeks in the late Summer of Love—was the most psychedelic record of that year not from San Francisco or London, as if Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Brian Wilson had conspired to make a country-rock Pet Sounds. Except Gentry, just 23 when she wrote the song, got there first, in miniature. // Gentry’s hit was a revolutionary act, a quietly thorough feminism in vision, deed and success amid the strict, paternal order of the country-music industry. And it was her license to thrill again. In October, 1967, while “Billie Joe” was still in the Top Five, Gentry began recording The Delta Sweete, a connected set of a dozen songs that extended the narrative dynamics of that single with personal reflection and set her folk-siren charisma in a richer frame of dream-state orchestration, swamp-rock guitars and big-city-R&B horns. // In her eight original songs for the album, Gentry drew from her childhood and church life on her grandparents’ farm in Chickasaw County, Mississippi: the girl-ish craving for a beautiful dress in “Reunion”; the rise-and-shine of “Mornin’ Glory”; the stern Sunday lessons in “Sermon,” based on a traditional hymn also known as “Run On.” The covers were boldly chosen: Mose Allison’s chain-gang blues “Parchman Farm”; “Tobacco Road”’s litany of trial; the Cajun pride in Doug Kershaw’s “Louisiana Man”. Gentry also turned them to new purpose and even gender. “Gonna get myself a man, one gonna treat me right,” she sang in Jimmy Reed’s “Big Boss Man” with heated assurance. // But The Delta Sweete—released in March, 1968, only three months after Dylan’s John Wesley Harding and right as the Byrds came to Nashville to cut Sweetheart of the Rodeo—was too soon in its precedence. Gentry’s LP, the first country-rock opera, was ignored on arrival, not even cracking Billboard’s Top 100. It was as if Billie Joe had risen out of the Tallahatchie River and thrown that record off the bridge instead. // This Delta Sweete is her long-delayed justice—Mercury Rev’s committed and an affectionate resurrection of an album that anticipated by three decades their own pivotal expedition through transcendental America, 1998’s Deserter’s Songs. From their recording lair in New York’s Catskill Mountains, the founding core of Jonathan Donahue and Grasshopper with Jesse Chandler (previously in the Texas group Midlake) honor Gentry’s foresight and creative triumph with spacious invention and hallucinatory air. And they are not alone. Gentry’s stories and original resolve are brought to new vocal life and empowerment by a vocal cast of women from across modern rock and its alternative paths: among them, Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval; Laetitia Sadier, formerly of Stereolab; Marissa Nadler; Margo Price, the fiery new country star with a punk-rock heart; and Norway’s Susanne Sundfør, who cuts through “Tobacco Road” with arctic-Nico poise. Phoebe Bridgers, whose first record was a softly stunning 2015 single for Ryan Adams’ PAX AM label, hovers through the acid- western suspense of Gentry’s “Jessye’ Lisabeth” with floating calm, like a comforting angel. // On the 1968 LP, Gentry opened with a call to jubilant order, “Okolona River Bottom Band,” like she was leading a barn-dance union of the early Rolling Stones and Louis Armstrong’s Hot Five. Norah Jones takes that entrance here with her own sultry command, like Sarah Vaughan at the head of a slow-blooming choir. In “Sermon,” Price—who has known real struggle up close—sings like a survivor through Mercury Rev’s explosion of color and groove: a specialty throughout the band’s history as recently as 2015’s The Light in You, going back through All Is Dream in 2001, the whirling iridescent soul of 1995’s See You on the Other Side and the sumptuous turbulence of the 1992 single “Car Wash Hair.” // Gentry is still very present in the changes. Her seesaw of pride and hurt in the melancholy blur of “Penduli Pendulum” (“When goodbye serves as/My one amusement”) is even more explicit with the seasoned intimacy of Vashti Bunyan—a once-elusive voice from Britain’s psychedelic-folk boom—set against the younger, brighter arc of Kaela Sinclair, now in the electronic project M83. And in “Courtyard,” a despairing finale of strings and guitar arpeggios on Gentry’s LP, Mercury Rev build a striking Delta Krautrock in which the English singer Beth Orton wanders, like Gentry, through a ruin of profound loss and treasured memory. // “Ode to Billie Joe” was not on the ‘68 Delta Sweete. But Mercury Rev go back to that dinner table with Lucinda Williams of Lake Charles, Louisiana, and it is an inspired bond, calling up the ghosts and questions of a South still very much with us. Indeed, Gentry—who retired from recording and performing in the Seventies—reportedly lives only a couple hours’ drive from the bridge that made her famous, while the spirits she set loose in The Delta Sweete are as restless and compelling as they were 50 years ago. This album is a loving tribute to that achievement, one of the greatest albums you have never heard. It is also a dozen new ways to walk that land. -David Fricke]

[Calvin’s first release on Bullseye Records. Calvin Arsenia came home to KC in 2014 after living in Edinburgh, Scotland, and has released the EPs, Moments, Prose, 2017’s Catastrophe. He released the EP Caviar to special guests who attended his Wickstock West show in West Bottoms. Standing at 6 foot 6 inches, Arsenia’s powerful vocals span a 3.5 octave range, while playing piano, banjo, guitar & harp. Calvin has played Folk Alliance International, KC Fringe Fest, Apocalypse Meow, The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, The Kauffman Center For The Performing Arts, Middle of the Map Fest., The Folly Theatre. He undertook a three month US/European Outlyre Tour where he has played San Francisco, Portland, Vancouver, NYC, Boston, Edinburgh, Sweden, Denmark, Holland, Switzerland, Lyon and Paris.]

Claire Adams is a critically acclaimed bassist, guitarist, singer, and songwriter. In the last year we have played musical tracks from Appropriate Grammar, Claire Adams and the Crowded Stage, The Classical Revolution, and Katy Guillen & The Girls all recordings and performing projects where Claire was essential, as a singer, songwriter and musician. Claire Adams has released multiple EPs and albums with each of these musical entities, while also releasing her very own solo EPs and solo albums too. Over the last 10 years Claire has traveled all around the world performing music, and “honing her melodic instincts and vision” in multiple genres of rock, blues, folk, americana, pop, jazz, and big band. At the center of all of this work is Claire’s beautiful and expressive voice, and her generous spirit and openness to collaborate, allowing oportunites for new younger musicians and producers to gain experience. Claire Studied Music Business at Belmont University and grew up in Topeka, Kansas.

Kansas City based Alyssa Bell is part if the string quartet Rewound. She is the Founder and Executive Director for Classical Revolution KC. Alyssa also serves as Adjunct Professor of High Strings at Northwest Missouri State University. Alyssa received her Master of Music in Performance/ Viola at Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Maryland and her undergraduate degree in Music education at the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance.

The Classical Revolution was a natural out-growth of your recordings as Claire and The Crowded Stage.

Peter Lawless is one of the founding members of The B’Dina’s, a band that included Katy Guillen on guitar & vocals, Peter Lawless on bass, saxophone, & vocals. Katelyn Jamison on keyboard & vocals, and Tess Jehle on drums & vocals, and released 3 EPs and one full length album between 2010 and 2014. Meredith McGrade was part of the original line up for their debut EP release. Peter Lawless and Katelyn Jamison play with Found A Job. Katelyn Jamison and Tess Jehle were part of the band Dream Wolf from 2010 to 2014. Tess Jehle is drummer for the band Dynamite Defense

Wick Thomas grew up in Drexel Missouri and graduated from UMKC. Wick is an urban pioneer who is also a gardener, a student, a teacher, a librarian and an activist. Wick was voted Best Activist by The Pitch Magazine. Wick has help organize LGBTQIA youth groups on college campuses and in High Schools, he served as President of EQUAL and won an award from the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. Wick spent many years working for the Kansas City Public Library and then the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art. Recently Wick was a guest artist for The Band That Fell To Earth – A Tribute To David Bowie at recordBar. Appropriately Wick interpreted the Bowie classic, “Rebel Rebel.” Wick Thomas, is lead singer for the punk rock band Wick and The Tricks. In late 2017, Wick & The Tricks, released a 7-inch vinyl, 4-song EP debut called “Not Enough,” on Black Site Records.

In 2006, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force gave Thomas a Creating Change Award for establishing a chapter of the Gay-Straight Alliance in 2004 while he was a student at Paola High School. He’s also been involved in bike activism, has volunteered for the ACLU and Greenpeace, and founded the local environmental group TWIG (Think Work Inspire Grow).

Wick Thomas is also involved in Shadow-casting for The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Frank Alvarez on the February 20, 2019 edition of Wednesday MidDay Medley.

I first met Frank Alvarez in the mid 1990s. Frank was working as a manager and music buyer for Recycled Sounds at Westport Road & Main Street. Before that Frank ran his own record store, Abba Zappa. When Recycled Sounds closed in 2006, Frank was part of a special radio show we produced on Wednesday MidDay Medley, featuring testimonials from past and present Recycled Sounds employees, and playlist created by Recycled Sounds Staff reflecting stories of the time Prince came into the store, or the multiple bus trips the store organized to see The Pixies, or the many cultural events that were connected to this special place. The Radio show also included live interviews with Frank, Kasey Rausch, Kurt von Schlemmer, Iris DeMent and Anne Winter herself, who helped to produced and coordinate the show.

It seemed like the end of an era for music. The end of vinyl. The end of brick and morter music stores. Frank went on to work for Vinyl Renaissance, one of the only record stores left in the metro, besides Zebedee’s on 39th, It’s A Beautiful Day, and Vinyl Underground at Seventh Heaven. Seven years passed, and then something happened, vinyl made a comeback. Mills Records Company opened in 2013, Records With Merritt opened in 2014, Zebedee’s closed and reopened as Revolution Records in the Crossroads, Josey Records opened at 19th & Oak St.; FM Music opened on East 18th St; Brothers Records & Music opened on Johnson Drive in Mission; and Gotwhatulike at 11601 Hickman Mills Drive opened in July 2014. Record Stores were opening and thriving again, creating that needed community space for music lovers, bands, and vinyl collectors.

Last Fall, Frank Alvarez and longtime friend James Oshel opened Sister Anne’s – Records and Coffee, at 901 East 31st Street, in Kansas City. Sister Anne’s sells used records, new local releases, posters, stereos, and coffee, and was named after Anne Winter who owned Recycled Sounds, one of Kansas City’s most treasured record stores, where both Frank and James worked. Since then their business is growing. They have welcomed many in-store concerts, and this weekend are presenting, Lenny Lashley’s Gang Of One, on Friday, Feb. 22, at 6:30 PM, with The Uncouth and Red Kate, hosted by Teenage Heart Records.

Sister Anne’s – Records and Coffee is two blocks west of Troost, at 901 East 31st Street.

James Oshel and Frank Alvarez had talked about starting a record store when they were roommates and working together at Recycled Sounds. When Recycled Sounds closed, in 2006, Frank Alvarez went to work at Vinyl Renaissance, and Jim Oshel at Broadway Cafe.

10 years passed by, and then the owner of Windhorse Tattoo, Mark Galloway, who had worked with Jim Oshel at Mercy Seat Tattoo, let his friend know he was moving and there would be extra space in the building. This was the spark that ignited Oshel and Alvarez moving into action to open their own place.

Frank Alvarez and Jim Oshel decided to open a record store and a coffee house and were motivated to name after Anne Winter, owner of Recycled Sounds, who died in 2009.

Recycled Sounds operated from 1988 to 2006. Anne Winter and husband Kurt Von Schlemmer, were integral to the Kansas City Music scene. Anne Winter was a co-founder of the Kansas City Free Speech Coalition, and the brain child behind the annual Culture Under Fire, a week and sometimes two week festival of music, art, performance, guest speakers and writing and publishing events centered around the 1st Amendment and freedom of speech. Recycled Sounds was home to many bands and a meeting place.

Frank told Aaron Rhodes in a Pitch Kansas City article published on December 26, 2018, “I want to do what Anne taught us to do,” Alvarez says. “She taught us to just be good people, help people find the music they’re looking for, provide a space in Kansas City where they can find out about music, come in and talk about music, and just do what we can for the whole scene.”

Frank ran his own record store, Abba Zappa, three blocks away from Recycled Sounds. As is usually the case record stores are generally friendly with each other, as studies prove that the more record stores in a community the more business for all. Frank and Anne were friends. Frank had been second guessing his decision to run his own store when at one point Anne Winter visited Anna Zappa and offered to buy him out, bringing his inventory , and he himself into Recycled Sounds. Alvarez accepted the offer.

Frank told Aaron Rhodes of The Pitch Kansas City, (When Anne hired me), “At that point, I was about 10 years in the game already, and I thought, ‘I know everything,’” Alvarez says. “I went to work for her and learned so much more.”

Anne Winter was one of the people who helped start 90.1 FM KKFI. She served on the Board of Directors and hosted Kansas City first ever Punk Rock show on the radio called Little “Orphan Annie.” Alvarez told Aaron Rhodes about the wide variety of music that could be found at Recycled Sounds. “There was someone there that specialized in every kind of music,” he says. “There was the hip-hop person, the punk rock person, there was a person that knew classic rock. Every base was covered.”

Frank Alvarez and Jim Oshel have been working diligently, building up the physical space and inventory, installing turn tables with coffee and espresso machines for their new business of Sister Anne’s – Records and Coffee. They are open from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM.The shop is hosting in-stores. Their opening featured Hipshot Killer and Emmaline Twist. Sister Anne’s – Records and Coffee has a big back room that serves as an all-ages venue.

Aaron Rhodes in his Pitchweekly feature called the Sister Anne’s “Winterlike — warm, friendly, knowledgeable.” “This is the only thing I’ve done since 1985,” Alvarez says. “I get up and come to a record store. That’s what I do.”

I’m Mark Manning. Today we celebrate the birthday of Iris DeMent, born January 5, 1961, in rural Paragould, Arkansas. She was the youngest of 14 children. At the age of 3, her devoutly religious family moved to California, where she grew up singing gospel music. During her teenage years, Iris was exposed to country, folk, & R&B, drawing influence from Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, & Joni Mitchell.

Iris moved to the midwest, and after a series of jobs as a waitress and typist she wrote her first song at the age of 25. She moved to Kansas City and played Harling’s Upstairs and open-mic nights alongside Scott Hrabko and Howard Iceberg. Iris met producer Jim Rooney in Nashville, in 1988, who helped her land a record contract.

Iris Dement made her recording debut in 1992, with her independently produced album, “Infamous Angel.” The record won critical acclaim and John Prine mentioned Iris in his list of favorite recordings of the year published in Rolling Stone. Despite a complete lack of support from country radio, the word of mouth praise for Iris DeMent’s “Infamous Angel” earned her a deal with Warner Bros Records, which reissued “Infamous Angel” in 1993. The album also included the song, “Let The Mystery Be” a composition that has also been covered by David Bryne, 10,000 Maniacs, Bun E. Carlos of Cheap Trick, Greg Brown, and it was the theme song for the second season of HBO’s The Leftovers.

Today we feature music from Iris DeMent’s six full length albums, her vast collaborative studio work with artists such as: Greg Brown, John Prine, Nancy Griffith, Emmylou Harris, Tom Russell, Steve Earle, and Kansas City’s own, Gary Kirkland.

And we’ll also feature music from Iris DeMent’s inspirations: Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Joni Mitchell, Merle Haggard and Bob Dylan.

Full disclosure, I love Iris DeMent. I’ve seen her live in concert over 8 times. I met Iris DeMent when I was working at Kinkos at 39th & Rainbow in 1992. Iris came in to copy press clippings, she was in the process of releasing her debut album. I wasn’t familiar with her music until I saw her on Late Night with Conan O’Brien in 1995, where she performed her song, “My Life.” I was blown away. I had video-taped the show, and I would replay that song for everyone that came to visit. I wanted everyone to know about Iris DeMent.

I ran into Iris at Classic Cup in Westport. By this point I had become a big fan of her music and I was sort of star stuck, but she approached me and asked, “How do I know you?” Our friendship was able to continue because we shared a mutual friend named Anne Winter, who invited me to a holiday party in Iris Dement’s River Market condo where we sang old fashioned hymns, with members of The Wilders. Anne Winter had become a close friend of Iris and even went out “on the road” with her at one point. Because of Anne, I stage managed a show at the Uptown Theatre with Michael Moore, Iris deMent and the Wilders all performing. Anne Winter also helped arranged for Iris to play one of our Big Bang Buffet shows in 1999 at The Hobbs Building. In 2002 Iris agreed to do a benefit show for Friends of Community Radio. At this point she was living in Coleman Heights in Kansas City and invited Linda Wilson and I to a home cooked meal at her house, to talk aver the details of the show. In 2004 Iris and Greg Brown performed together in a show with Amy Goodman of “Democracy Now!” to raise over $10,000.00 for KKFI. Iris never took a penny from any of these shows, and has always been such a generous supporter of 90.1 FM. She recognized as a singer songwriter how important community radio is for independent artists like herself, and she has always given back, to help keep this radio station alive. Because of Iris DeMent’s generosity, and in honor of our dear friend Anne Winter, who we lost in 2009, I vowed to pay tribute to Iris on her birthday, each year, with this radio show.

3. Loretta Lynn & Jack White – “Portland Oregon”
from: Van Lear Rose / Interscope / 2004 [produced by Jack White of The White Stripes and Racontuers. It was initially intended as a musical experiment, blending the styles of country singer-songwriter Lynn and producer White, who performs on the whole album as a musician. At the time, Lynn was 69 and White was 28. The title refers to Lynn’s origins as the daughter of a miner working the Van Lear coal mines. The album was the most successful crossover music album of Lynn’s 45-year career. At the 2005 Grammy Awards, Lynn won: Best Country Album and Best Country Collaboration with Vocals for her duet with White.]

4. Johnny Cash & Joni Mitchell – “Girl From North Country”
from: The Best of The Johnny Cash TV Show / Columbia Legacy / 2007
[a TV music variety show that ran for 58-episodes from June 7, 1969 to March 31, 1971 on ABC. It featured many folk/country musicians of the time: Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Linda Ronstadt, Kris Kristofferson, Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, Merle Haggard, James Taylor and Tammy Wynette. It also featured other musicians such as jazz great, Louis Armstrong, who died 8 months after recording the show. Recorded at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, then home of the Grand Ole Opry. The first show featured Joni Mitchell, Cajun fiddler Doug Kershaw, Fannie Flagg and Bob Dylan. The show included a “Country Gold” segment that featured legends never seen on network TV such as Bill Monroe & his Blue Grass Boys. Cash refused to cut the word “stoned” from Kris Kristofferson’s “Sunday Morning Coming Down”, he stood by his Christian faith “despite network anxieties”, and persisted in bringing on Pete Seeger whose anti-Vietnam song on another network had “caused a firestorm.” He premiered his Man in Black song on an episode filmed at Nashville’s Vanderbilt University’s campus. The show was dumped in 1971 as part of ABC’s so-called “rural purge,” which also claimed that network’s The Lawrence Welk Show.]

[In 1968 country superstar George Jones witnessed a fight between Tammy Wynette and her husband Don Chapel. At Jones’s urging, Wynette and her daughters drove away with him. Wynette and Jones married Feb. 16, 1969, and Wynette’s 4th daughter, Georgette, was born in 1970. Jones and Wynette, were nicknamed the “President and First Lady” of country music, and they recorded a string of hit duets that seemed drawn directly from their volatile relationship, which resulted in their divorcing in 1975. Their classic recordings included “Two Story House,” “Golden Ring,” and the humorous “(We’re Not) The Jet Set.” ]

6. Loretta Lynn – “You Ain’t Woman Enough To Take My Man”

[Live performance for Austin City Limits taped in 1983. Loretta Webb was the second of 8 children; grew up in Butcher Holler, a section of Van Lear, a mining community in Kentucky. Growing up with such humble roots had a huge effect on Lynn’s life and heavily influenced her music as an adult. Her autobiography describes how, during her childhood, the community had no motor vehicles, paved roads, or flush toilets. She married Oliver Vanetta Lynn, known as “Doo,” on Jan. 10, 1948, at age 13. In an effort to break free of the coal mining industry, at 14, Lynn moved to the logging community Custer, Washington, with her husband. The Lynns had 4 children – Betty Sue, Jack Benny, Cissy and Ernest Ray – by the time Loretta was 18, and in her early 20s she then had twin girls, Peggy & Patsy. No stranger to controversy, Loretta Lynn possibly had more banned songs than any other country music artist, prior to The Dixie Chicks, including “Rated X,” about the double standards divorced women face, “Wings Upon Your Horns,” about the loss of teenage virginity, and “The Pill,” lyrics by T. D. Bayless, about a wife and mother becoming liberated via the birth control pill. Her song “Dear Uncle Sam,” released in 1966 during the Vietnam War, describes a wife’s anguish at the loss of a husband to war. It has been included in live performances during the US – Iraq War.]

7. Merle Haggard – “Workin’ Man Blues”
from: Oh Boy Classic Presents Merle Haggard / Oh Boy Records / 2000 [Originally released in 1969, a tribute to a core group of his fans: The American blue-collared working man. Backed by an electric guitar that typified Haggard’s signature Bakersfield Sound, he fills the role of one of those workers expressing pride in values of hard work and sacrifice, despite the resulting fatigue and the stress of raising a large family. Influences of Iris DeMent

Iris DeMent represents that place in the road, where Country and Folk music merged with honest stories, of working class people, not afraid to tell the truth about the times they are living through. Iris DeMent grew up singing gospel music. During her teenage years she was first exposed to country, folk, and R&B, drawing influence from Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, and Joni Mitchell.

8. Johnny Cash – “Ring of Fire”
from: 16 Biggest Hits / Columbia Legacy / 2007
[co-written by June Carter (wife of Johnny Cash) and Merle Kilgore. The song was recorded on March 25, 1963 and became the biggest hit of his career, staying at #1 on the charts for 7 weeks. “Ring of Fire” refers to falling in love – which is what June Carter was experiencing with Johnny Cash at the time. Some sources claim that June had seen the phrase, “Love is like a burning ring of fire,” underlined in one of her uncle A. P. Carter’s Elizabethan books of poetry. She worked with Kilgore on writing a song inspired by this phrase as she had seen her uncle do in the past. In the 2005 film, Walk the Line June is depicted as writing the song while agonizing over her feelings for Cash despite his drug addiction and alcoholism as she was driving home one evening. She had written: “There is no way to be in that kind of hell, no way to extinguish a flame that burns, burns, burns”. Cash claims he had a dream where he heard the song accompanied by “Mexican horns”. Four years after the song was released, Carter and Cash were married which Cash states helped to stop his alcohol and drug addictions. Cash’s daughter, Rosanne has stated, “The song is about the transformative power of love and that’s what it has always meant to me and that’s what it will always mean to the Cash children.]

[Released between her 2 biggest commercial and critical successes – “Blue” and “Court & Spark”. In 2007 it was one of 50 recordings chosen that year by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry. The title song “For the Roses” was Mitchell’s farewell to the business; she took an extended break for a year after. The album was critically acclaimed with The New York Times saying “Each of Mitchell’s songs on For the Roses is a gem glistening with her elegant way with language, her pointed splashes of irony and her perfect shaping of images. Never does Mitchell voice a thought or feeling commonly. She’s a songwriter and singer of genius who can’t help but make us feel we are not alone.” A nude photograph of Joni Mitchell was included on the inside cover of the original LP and is included in the CD booklet. The photograph shows the singer from the rear and was taken from a considerable distance; she is shown standing on a rock and staring out at the ocean. This created some controversy at the time.]

Iris DeMent’s first three releases, all on Warner Brothers records, were critically acclaimed, and she received two Grammy nominations during this time, in the “Folk Music” category. Meanwhile country radio completely overlooked her original songs, and amazing voice that has been compared to Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette. For her 1992 debut record, John Prine wrote the liner notes.

Well the oil popped out and burnt my arm as if the pork chops were trying to say, “Shut up, or I’ll really give you something to cry about.” Of course, pork chops can’t talk. In the 2002 Iris DeMent did a benefit concert for The Friends of Community Radio at Unity Temple on The Plaza. I remember when Iris asked us if it was okay that she have a musician friend open the concert for her, we agreed because Iris was donating her talent to the cause of community radio. And then she told us that this musician friend was Greg Brown, who at this point was known all over the country, but had never before played KC.

Later that year, on November 21, 2002 Greg married Iris DeMent in a private ceremony in the office of Rev. Sam Mann of St. Mark Church in East KC.

Grammy Nominated Greg Brown is one of the most repected singer songwriters working in music today. He started singing professionally at the age of 18 organizing early folk concerts in New York City, Portland, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. In the 1980s, he worked and toured extensively as musical director for Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion radio program. He also founded his own record label, named Red House Records after a home in which he lived in Iowa.

Greg Brown has released over 30 recordings and has allowed much of his music to be used to raise funds and awareness for environmental and social causes. His songs have been performed by Willie Nelson, Jack Johnson, Carlos Santana, Michael Johnson, Ani DiFranco, Shawn Colvin, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Iris DeMent and Joan Baez.

[Lifeline is the fourth album released by singer-songwriter Iris DeMent, released in 2004, eight years since her previous recording The Way I Should. Lifeline contains many traditional Protestant gospel songs DeMent describes as finding comfort in playing and singing. In her liner notes, DeMent recounts how her mother sang these songs in times of stress looking straight at the sky, “as if she were talking to someone.” DeMent’s rendition of “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms” accompanies the closing credits of the Coen brothers’ True Grit (2010). Thom Jurek of Allmusic writes: “… [DeMent] claims that for her, too, the music contained here became her lifeline through a season of hardship… While this is far from a full return to form for Dement, it is truly good to have her back.” Music critic Robert Christgau wrote “Her heart cherishes Jesus’ memory, but her mind, voice, and soul remain her own.”]

After Lifeline it would be 8 more years before Iris DeMent would release another album.

Iris gave audiences a taste of her new music during a sold out benefit concert at The Folly Theatre with Greg Brown on November 11, 2011. The benefit was organised by friend Rev. Sam Mann for the St. Mark Child and Family and Development Center. Iris and Greg helped Rev Mann raise over $50,000.00 for the center that serves children and families on the east side in Kansas City.

Iris DeMent’s 2012 album “Sing The Delta” received glowing reviews from the UK publication UNcut, The New Yorker, The Boston Globe, The Chicago Tribune, and was in many Top Ten Lists of KC music affictionados, including being #1 on our list of WMM’s The 112 Best Recordings of 2012.

The Trackless Woods sets 18 poems by acclaimed 20th century Russian poet Anna Akhmatova to life. Hailed as one of Russia’s finest poets, Akhmatova survived the Bolshevik Revolution, both World Wars and Stalin. When Iris randomly stumbled upon Akhmatova’s work in a book of poetry a friend sent as a gift, she was immediately taken by the sorrow and burden of the poems. Iris recorded the album with co-producer Richard Bennett in her living room over a five-day period. The project also fulfilled a long yearned-for desire to connect with her adopted daughter’s culture and history. Iris and her husband Greg Brown adopted their daughter from Siberia in 2005, when she was 6, and Iris says ”I’d never have made this record were it not for her.”

When Iris randomly stumbled upon Akhmatova’s work in a book of poetry a friend sent as a gift, she was immediately taken by the sorrow and burden of the poems, juxtaposed with Akhmatova’s lightness and transcendence in the face of inhumanity. ”Anna’s gift of song is so strong, about alI I had to do was get really quiet and listen,” says Iris. After reading that first poem the melodies began pouring out of her, and before she even fully understood what was driving her, Iris was gathering musicians & friends, including co-producer Richard Bennett (Emmylou Harris, Neil Diamond, Steve Earle), to record ‘The Trackless Woods’ in her living room over a 5-days. The result is a pairing of piano and voice in Iris’ style with timeless melodies that are rooted in the American South.]

Like Russian poet Anna Akhmatova, Iris DeMent has never shied away from lending her voice to justice and social causes. On March 2, 2017 in response to the election and policies of current President Donald Trump, Iris released her latest song “We Won’t Keep Quiet” on You Tube. Written and performed by Iris DeMent with members of the Iowa City community who sang with her, and participated in the Lift the Ban Rally in Iowa City, the Women’s March in Des Moines, and the Women’s March in Washington, D.C. The song has not been released anywhere other than You Tube.

Had she been making country albums in the ’70s and ’80s and had more commercial ambition, she’d probably now be considered right up there with Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette. Instead, she’s lived a contemporary life, a somewhat private life. As she recently told an interviewer, “There’s a lot that goes into life besides songwriting.” And she’s taken her time in composing songs that fit into no genre easily.”

Wednesday MidDay Medley Celebrates Iris DeMent

WMM presents our annual celebration of Iris DeMent, born January 5, 1961, in rural Paragould, Arkansas. She was the youngest of 14 children. At the age of 3, her devoutly religious family moved to California, where she grew up singing gospel music. During her teenage years, Iris was exposed to country, folk, & R&B, drawing influence from Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, & Joni Mitchell.

Iris moved to the midwest and after a series of jobs as a waitress and typist, she wrote her first song at the age of 25. She moved to Kansas City and played Harling’s Upstairs and open-mic nights alongside Scott Hrabko and Howard Iceberg. Iris met producer Jim Rooney in Nashville, in 1988, who helped her land a record contract.

Iris Dement made her recording debut in 1992, with her independently produced album, “Infamous Angel.” The record won critical acclaim and John Prine mentioned Iris in his list of favorite recordings of the year published in Rolling Stone. Despite a complete lack of support from country radio, the word of mouth praise for Iris DeMent’s “Infamous Angel” earned her a deal with Warner Bros Records, which reissued “Infamous Angel” in 1993. The album also included the song, “Let The Mystery Be” a composition that has also been covered by David Bryne, 10,000 Maniacs, Bun E. Carlos of Cheap Trick, Greg Brown, and it was the theme song for the second season of HBO’s The Leftovers.

We’ll feature music from Iris DeMent’s six full length albums, her contributions to film, her vast collaborative studio work with artists such as: Greg Brown, John Prine, Nanci Griffith, Emmylou Harris, Tom Russell, Steve Earle, and Kansas City’s own, Gary Kirkland.

We’ll also feature music from Iris DeMent’s inspirations: Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Joni Mitchell, Merle Haggard and Bob Dylan.

A graduate of CalArts, where she studied composition, Holter released her debut studio album, Tragedy, in August 2011.]

5. Crocodiles – “I Like It In The Dark”

[4th studio album by noise pop/indie pop band from San Diego, CA. The group was formed in 2008 by core members Brandon Welchez and Charles Rowell after the break-up of their former punk bands Some Girls and The Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower. Brandon Welches also played in an early incarnation of Dum Dum Girls and he is married to frontwoman Dee Dee Penny. The album was produced by Sune Rose Wagner of The Raveonettes in Los Angeles, California. Guests on the album include Gregg Foreman of Delta 72 and Cat Power, soul singer Afrodyete of Breakestra as well as Welchez’ brother, jazz musician Josh Welchez.]

[In September 2010, Crocodiles released an instrumental song, “Kill Joe Arpaio”, referencing the controversial anti-immigrant Sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona. Arpaio heard the song and responded using twitter, “Msg for the San Diego band ‘Alligators’ who wrote new song called ‘Kill Joe Arpaio’: BITE ME,”. Arpaio also referenced the song during an appearance on Phoenix TV channel KPHO, saying “I’m a little concerned about the music, where kids can get this type of music. I think it sends a bad message. I understand freedom of speech, but there has to be a line of threatening a law enforcement official.” Crocodiles responded via Spin Magazine saying “Maybe if the song was called ‘I’m Gonna Kill Joe Arpaio,’ he’d have a case but what we are attacking is the attitudes and policies he represents. In reality, we’re keeping our fingers crossed that his much-deserved heart attack comes soon; the world can always use one less racist.” ]

[10th studio album from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, indie rock band consisting of singer/guitarist Mac McCaughan, guitarist Jim Wilbur, bassist Laura Ballance, and drummer Jon Wurster. Formed in 1989, they helped define the Chapel Hill music scene of the 1990s. Their energetic, high-velocity style and do-it-yourself ethics were influenced by punk rock. The band released a string of full length album’s and compilations throughout the 90’s. Idris Raoufi is a co-founding member of the 816 Bicycle Collective a volunteer run organization working to rescue, repair and redistribute bicycles. The collective wants to increase the bike community to promote alternative transportation that is healthy, inexpensive, and with zero emissions. The Kansas City Bicycle Federation currently owns the building at 518 E. 31st St. intended to house The 816 Bicycle Collective non-profit community bicycle shop, as well as other like-minded individuals and organizations.

All bikes are built up by WRENCH mechanics and are double checked for safety. The goal of the list build-up is to provide a bicycle that rolls, stops and is safe to ride; for any further maintenance or upgrades, our shop is here to assist with those needs. Each WRENCH volunteer has a dedicated shift on either THURSDAY or SATURDAY and attends WRENCH meetings. WRENCH volunteers help patrons of the collective with bike needs during any shop hours and often are responsible for opening, greeting, running and/or closing the shop. WRENCH volunteers have a say in how the shop is run, serve as both student and teacher, have an overall understanding of how the shop works, and basic mechanic skills.

The 816 Bicycle Collective purchased outright three under-loved buildings at the corner of 31st and Cherry. This affords us the unique opportunity to take ownership of our future and implement the programming we’ve always dreamed of. In addition to the new home of The 816, these buildings will provide space for other likeminded non-profits and businesses to sustain the operations of the buildings.

Last week we said goodbye to a friend, a musician, an activist, a singer, a songwriter, an organizer, a founder, a rock & roller, a warrior, a voice, a beauty, a daughter, a wife. The following is Abigail Henderson’s Obituary, as published in the KC Star on August 31, 2013, with additional notes, and 4 songs, from 4 bands, Abigail played with from 2001 to 2013.

Abigail Hope Henderson Meck, 36, died Aug. 27, 2013 at her home in Kansas City after a five-year battle with cancer. Abigail was born April 8, 1977, in New York. In 1984, she moved to a suburb of Detroit. In 1999, she moved to KC to live with her mother, Carol Pfander, who preceded her in death. Abigail attended the University of Missouri at Kansas City. She graduated in 2002 with a bachelor of arts in English. While at UMKC, she was co-founder and co-director of the Association of Women Students. The association sponsored several events, including an appearance by Angela Davis, a performance of “The Vagina Monologues” and a “Take Back the Night” vigil. After college, she also helped organize “Beauty Slays the Beast,” a benefit for political-activism and voter awareness. While in college, Abigail started playing guitar. In 2001, she started her first band, Trouble Junction.

This music was recorded and mixed by John Velghe who told me that when Abigail unleashed her powerful voice in his home studio, plaster fell from the ceiling.]

In the fall of 2003, singer/songwriter Abigail Henderson and guitarist Chris Meck got together and started writing songs. They confessed that their first songs were “pretty country…pretty… cow-punkish.” Mike Stover wrote on facebook that, “Trouble Junction had to end so that Abigail could start the next chapters.” In 2003, Abigail started the band The Gaslights with Chris Meck, who would later become her husband. The Gaslights recorded five albums, releasing three of them.

As we approach our 500th show this fall, I remember my friend Anne Winter, who inspired me to volunteer in community radio and so much more. Anne was instrumental in nudging me into working on many great projects and shows. I started doing this radio program the same year The Gaslights released their debut recording. Prominently displayed on the New Releases shelf at Recycled Sounds, Anne’s record store, it was Anne Winter who encouraged me to check out The Gaslights first release, “Midwest Hotel.”

The Gaslights toured & recorded from 2004 to 2008. After 9 bass players, 3 drummers, 2 vans, 1 dead moose, 1 impromptu marriage, countless tours of the United States, 3 tours in Europe, 3 full length releases. The Gaslights ended.

In early 2008, Abigail was diagnosed with Stage 3 inflammatory breast cancer. In response to her battle with a health insurance company and daunting medical bills, she and others in the music community founded the Midwest Music Foundation, a group that sponsors health care programs and provides financial relief to local musicians who have suffered a health care crisis. Since 2009, the MMF has distributed $30,000 in health-care grants. It also co-sponsored the Well Women’s Clinic, which provides free screenings for female musicians. Abigail also founded Apocalypse Meow, an annual fundraiser for the MMF.

Doing this radio show has taught me about the growing & fertile KC Music Scene. Abigail was always fostering the community, as a songwriter & performer, but also as an organizer. A frequent guest on WMM, she came on the air to talk about Apocalypse Meow & The MidCoast Takeover. On one of her earliest appearances, Abigail told me,”We think of this as OUR radio show.” She was right. In fact, 90.1 FM, belongs to all of us. She knew that.

In 2010, Abigail & Chris formed: Atlantic Fadeout with Dutch Humphrey on bass, vocals; and Amy Farrand on drums. Abigail had lost her hair, but not her power. Anyone who saw Atlantic Fadeout live, could not deny the spirit in her performance. Like opera, you felt the song, because Abigail imprinted her lyrics into your heart, with the strength of her voice.

The new band was created from the ashes of The Gaslights, combined with the super powers of Amy Farrand who plays bass in American Catastrophe (amoung several other bands) and Dutch Humphrey who sings lead in Cherokee Rock Rifle.]

Abigail had undergone multiple rounds of chemotherapy treatments. In January 2012 her cancer reappeared and she tried an experimental treatment. As reported in the Kansas City Star, “She took a last-ditch experimental drug and recovered, but not unscathed. The cancer had paralyzed one of her vocal cords. Still, she did not give up her music. Instead, she and Meck started Tiny Horse, a folk duo that would grow into a full band.” She told The Star last October, just days before the 5th annual Apocalypse Meow, “I used to nail notes to the walls, I can’t do that anymore. I had to find a different path. It’s like a guitar player who loses fingers: You can still play, you just have to figure out how to do it differently.”

In addition to her mother, Abigail was preceded in death by her father, Frank Henderson, who died in 2007. Abigail is survived by her husband and many friends and music fans in the KC and Lawrence area. A memorial in her honor was held Sat, Aug. 31, at Unity Temple on The Plaza. After the services, a wake was held that lasted until the sunrise.

This year Abigail Henderson and Chris Meck released the beautiful EP, “Darkly Sparkly” from their most recent band: Tiny Horse. Abigail’s final live performance in Kansas City was at Knuckleheads on July 11, when Tiny Horse opened for the BoDeans.

Abigail Hope Henderson Meck, your life was cut short, way too early, but in the last 10 years you did more than many will do in 60 years, and you have left us better off than we were before you were here. We will keep your light shining!

Writer, actor, musician, artist, teacher, singer, songwriter – Vi Tran was born near Saigon, Vietnam and raised in southwestern Kansas. He began performing as a toddler in the refugee camps of southeast Asia. Other refugees took pity on the young (and literally starving) artist, giving him what food they could spare. Vi Tran considers his life an open-ended refugee story and All-American tale, full of landlocked sailors and broken lovers; loss and discovery; but most of all, hope. Vi has appeared in Theatres all across Kansas City as an actor, has also become a big part of the Kansas City Music Scene and is on the verge of releasing his debut full length recording “American Heroine.”

50 years ago, on this date, I was born, so today i’ll play from some of my favorite recordings, from different times of my life, starting in 2nd grade when I discovered his Mom’s record collection in the basement.

I was in second grade, seven years old, in our unfinished basement we had an old TV that got one channel, CBS, out of Lincoln, Nebraska. Across the room was an old 1960’s wooden Stereo cabinet. Beside the cabinet was a box with several of my Mom’s albums. I pulled out “Meet The Beatles” put the needle on the groove, and this was this first spin of my life.

4. The Beatles – “All My Loving” (Mono)

Next I pulled out a cover that looked like a portrait of a wedding couple, except they were brother and sister, not husband and wife. It was “Close To You.” The Carpenters covered “Help” by The Beatles, and the big hits “We’ve Only Just Begun” and “Close To You” a Burt Bacharach / Hal David classic. On the second side of the LP, they recorded another Burt Bacharach / Hal David song, originally written for the 1968 musical “Promises, Promises.” This song was made a hit by Bobbie Gentry, and also Dionne Warwick, but this version displays the amazing harmony and almost spooky studio arrangements of brother Richard Carpenter. It was 1971.

I grew up in a small town in Nebraska. R&B wasn’t played on the radio. When I was 11 my parents got a divorce and we moved to the “other side of town.” My mom got a job working at the Women’s Prison. Since mom was a new employee, she had to work all of the holidays, so I spent Easter, Mother’s Day, 4th of July, at the prison. It was there that I heard this song for the first time. The best music in town was at the prison.

In my tween years my mother’s record collection was changing, her second husband Al drove a van, and listened to 8-track tapes. My mom was in the RCA Music Club where they would automatically send you the new release, that’s how she ended up with the soundtrack to the film “Superfly” from Curtis Mayfield.The movie never played our town. But the soundtrack tells the story, and we hear in the bridge Curtis singing, “Trying to get over” the theme we hear in so many of Curtis Mayfield’s incredible recordings.

In high school journalism class, working on the yearbook staff, we listened to this debut record, of a new band from Athens, Georgia. We listened on a little small portable stereo, checked out from the media department. The record’s label said, “play loud,” we did.

One summer morning, in 1982, in her apartment, in Crete, my friend BJ, woke me up, with the song, “Young Americans,” and it changed my life. I now had to have every Bowie recording ever made. Bowie actually helped me “come out,” and I learned that reinvention could prevent insanity. In my search back, I discovered “Hunky Dory,” recorded in 1971, just after his research trip to NYC & Andy Warhol’s Factory. This is the opening track on the second side of the album.

Their debut album came out in 1977, but it took some of us until 1981 to discover it, their music has been therapy to me, both physically and psychologically. I love all of their recordings, but 77 is special. They were fresh young art students fearlessly being a band.

I knew I was gay when I was 5, but I kept it a secret. My first year in college I fell in love with a girl, but after 9 months I ended our relationship. I felt I was lying. That summer I started to “come out,” at least to myself, and then, in my second year in college, I sort of fell in love with my friend B.J.’s lesbian girlfriend Dani. She had moved into our dorm after a few dates with BJ. One night after a trip to KC, Dani and I ran across campus to Baba Rama’s room at Smith Hall. He had friends visiting, but we put on the cassette, “Combat Rock” by The Clash, and the three of us just started dancing. A straight guy, a lesbian girl, and a gay guy. I was 19, and trying to figure everything out. It was confusing. Thankfully I had a “kick-ass” soundtrack to help make the connections.

50 years ago, on this date, I was born, so today I’m playing from some of my favorite recordings, from different times of my life

Baba Rama, was two years older than me in college, he was always luring me into new situations, and possible danger. He had a reputation. He introduced me to Patti Smith’s album “Wave” the same night he bought thai stick from several international students. From that day forward, I would always love Patti Smith. All of her recordings are worth their weight, for her authentic rock and roll voice has passed from underground poet to best selling author. Her debut was produced by John Cale, and I think this song is perfect.

1984, was my own personal “Year of Hell.” I was 22, it was my Senior year in college. I was taking 23 credits my 1st semester and 21 my 2nd. It was the same year my theatre director decided to “put the moves on me.” I went from denial to rebellion, in a 9-month ark, and left empty, and estranged. The Smiths helped me feel less alone, and they were cool.

In the mid 1990s my friend Sandra was Manager of The Midland Theater. As a perk she arranged for our friends, to have front row seats, for multiple Patti LaBelle concerts. These shows were very special. The audience was so incredibly mixed, half of the audience was African American straight couples and the other half were gay men, and everyone was dressed like they were going to church, or a nightclub. The music and the love of Patti brought us all together. Patti performed all of her usual tricks, giving her eye lashes to someone in the audience; rolling across the stage from one side to the other; kicking her shoes off high into the air; crying, witnessing on stage. And of course singing, filling the room, with her voice, dropping the mic to the stage floor, to prove she could still be heard even if the electricity went out. Patti represents the history of modern pop music, from her days in The Bluebelles, and The Bluebelles fantastic transformation into LaBelle, a band that reinterpreted many rock classics, and also wrote many of their own best songs. This one was written by LaBelle member Nona Hendrix.

This is the title song from one of my favorite albums of all time. If you broke up with your lover, you may never hold them again, this record speaks to that part of your heart. In 1988 we were buying all of our favorite albums again, on CD, and hearing Joni digitally through the speakers, it felt like she was singing directly to me. I got to see her live, when she toured with Dylan in 1998. I had front row, center seats, at The United Center in Chicago. I cried through the entire concert as Joni played guitar, with her Jazz Combo, smoking a cigarette, bringing all of her songs alive onstage, it was sacred, like this song…

BJ’s girlfriend was in a CD subscription service and was sent the 5 CD, Box Set “Peel Slowly and See,” featuring all of The Velvet Underground’s studio recordings. Before BJ’s girlfriend could send it back, BJ snagged it, and gave it to Caleb and I as a gift. The music filled our house on West 39th Street. Where our first floor was used as an art gallery, a rehearsal space, a place for Scorpio parties, Jen’s Seder. The Velvet Undergound were the house band for Andy Warhol’s Factory. When I think about The Factory, I hear this song.

I quickly began searching for all of the recordings of The Magnetic Fields. Then the band released the acclaimed, “69 Loves Songs.” Recently, Lisa and I were talking about how we love these recordings and how our favorite song changes from time to time. This is my current favorite, on “69 Love Songs,” from one of my favorite bands: The Magnetic Fields.

I was able to sit in the front row of the Kauffman Center to witness the living legend, Mavis Staples. She came up through gospel music, and then secular R&B, when Pops decided to broaden their audience. When you hear The Staple Singers you feel their struggle for equality through beautiful melody. Mavis has brought her voice & spirit to collaborations with The Band, Prince, Dylan. Her collaboration with Ry Cooder, “Down In Mississippi” was a musical masterpiece, of first-hand, civil rights history, in song. She followed that up with a collaboration with Jeff Tweedy, who wrote this perfect song, for Mavis to sing.

I met Iris DeMent when I was working at Kinkos at 39th & Rainbow in 1992. Iris came in to copy her press clippings, she was in the process of releasing her debut album. I wasn’t familiar with her music until I saw her on Late Night with Conan O’Brienin 1994, where she performed her song “My Life.” I was blown away. I had video taped the show and I remember replaying that song for anyone that came to visit. I ran into Iris at Classic Cup in Westport. I was sort of star stuck, but she approached me and asked, “How do I Know You?” Our friendship continued because we shared a mutual friend named Anne Winter, who arranged for Iris play a Big Bang Buffet in 1999. Iris also did a benefit for Friends of Community Radio in 2002, and KKFI in 2004. I love Iris! This is one of her first songs.

1. Loretta Lynn  & Jack White – “Portland Oregon”

[produced by Jack White of The White Stripes and Racontuers. It was initially intended as a musical experiment, blending the styles of country singer-songwriter Lynn and producer White, who performs on the whole album as a musician. At the time, Lynn was 69 and White was 28. The title refers to Lynn’s origins as the daughter of a miner working the Van Lear coal mines. The album was the most successful crossover music album of Lynn’s 45-year career. At the 2005 Grammy Awards, Lynn won: Best Country Album and Best Country Collaboration with Vocals for her duet with White.]  
 
2. Johnny Cash & Joni Mitchell – “Girl From North Country”

[a TV music variety show that ran for 58-episodes from June 7, 1969 to March 31, 1971 on ABC. It featured many folk/country musicians of the time: Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Linda Ronstadt, Kris Kristofferson, Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, Merle Haggard, James Taylor and Tammy Wynette. It also featured other musicians such as jazz great, Louis Armstrong, who died 8 months after recording the show. Recorded at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, then home of the Grand Ole Opry. The first show featured Joni Mitchell, Cajun fiddler Doug Kershaw, Fannie Flagg  and Bob Dylan. The show included a “Country Gold” segment that featured legends never seen on network TV such as Bill Monroe & his Blue Grass Boys.  Cash refused to cut the word “stoned” from Kris Kristofferson’s “Sunday Morning Coming Down”, he stood by his Christian faith “despite network anxieties”, and persisted in bringing on Pete Seeger whose anti-Vietnam song on another network had “caused a firestorm.” He premiered his Man in Black song on an episode filmed at Nashville’s Vanderbilt University’s campus. The show was dumped in 1971 as part of ABC’s so-called “rural purge,” which also claimed that network’s The Lawrence Welk Show.]
 
3. John Prine w/ Iris Dement – “We’re Not The Jet Set”

[In 1968 country superstar George Jones witnessed a fight between Tammy Wynette and her husband Don Chapel. At Jones’s urging, Wynette and her daughters drove away with him. Wynette and Jones married Feb. 16, 1969, and Wynette’s 4th daughter, Georgette, was born in 1970. Jones and Wynette, were nicknamed the “President and First Lady” of country music, and they recorded a string of hit duets that seemed drawn directly from their volatile relationship, which resulted in their divorcing in 1975. Their classic recordings included “Two Story House,” “Golden Ring,” and the humorous “(We’re Not) The Jet Set.”]

4.  Johnny Cash  – “Ring of Fire”

[co-written by June Carter (wife of Johnny Cash) and Merle Kilgore. The song was recorded on March 25, 1963 and became the biggest hit of his career, staying at #1 on the charts for 7 weeks.  “Ring of Fire” refers to falling in love – which is what June Carter was experiencing with Johnny Cash at the time. Some sources claim that June had seen the phrase, “Love is like a burning ring of fire,” underlined in one of her uncle A. P. Carter’s Elizabethan books of poetry. She worked with Kilgore on writing a song inspired by this phrase as she had seen her uncle do in the past. In the 2005 film, Walk the Line June is depicted as writing the song while agonizing over her feelings for Cash despite his drug addiction and alcoholism as she was driving home one evening. She had written: “There is no way to be in that kind of hell, no way to extinguish a flame that burns, burns, burns”. Cash claims he had a dream where he heard the song accompanied by “Mexican horns”. Four years after the song was released, Carter and Cash were married which Cash states helped to stop his alcohol and drug addictions. Cash’s daughter, Rosanne has stated, “The song is about the transformative power of love and that’s what it has always meant to me and that’s what it will always mean to the Cash children.]
 
5. Loretta Lynn – “You Ain’t Woman Enough To Take My Man”

[Live performance for Austin City Limits taped in 1983. Loretta Webb was the second of 8 children; grew up in Butcher Holler, a section of Van Lear, a mining community in Kentucky. Growing up with such humble roots had a huge effect on Lynn’s life and heavily influenced her music as an adult. Her autobiography describes how, during her childhood, the community had no motor vehicles, paved roads, or flush toilets. She married Oliver Vanetta Lynn, known as “Doo,” on Jan. 10, 1948, at age 13. In an effort to break free of the coal mining industry, at 14, Lynn moved to the logging community Custer, Washington, with her husband. The Lynns had 4 children – Betty Sue, Jack Benny, Cissy and Ernest Ray – by the time Loretta was 18, and in her early 20s she then had twin girls, Peggy & Patsy. No stranger to controversy, Loretta Lynn possibly had more banned songs than any other country music artist, prior to The Dixie Chicks, including “Rated X,” about the double standards divorced women face, “Wings Upon Your Horns,” about the loss of teenage virginity, and “The Pill,” lyrics by T. D. Bayless, about a wife and mother becoming liberated via the birth control pill. Her song “Dear Uncle Sam,” released in 1966 during the Vietnam War, describes a wife’s anguish at the loss of a husband to war. It has been included in live performances during the current Iraq War.]

7. Joni Mitchell  – “For The Roses”

[Released between her 2 biggest commercial and critical successes – “Blue” and “Court & Spark”. In 2007 it was one of 50 recordings chosen that year by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry.  The title song “For the Roses” was Mitchell’s farewell to the business; she took an extended break for a year after. The album was critically acclaimed with The New York Times saying “Each of Mitchell’s songs on For the Roses is a gem glistening with her elegant way with language, her pointed splashes of irony and her perfect shaping of images. Never does Mitchell voice a thought or feeling commonly. She’s a songwriter and singer of genius who can’t help but make us feel we are not alone.” A nude photograph of Joni Mitchell was included on the inside cover of the original LP and is included in the CD booklet. The photograph shows the singer from the rear and was taken from a considerable distance; she is shown standing on a rock and staring out at the ocean. This created some controversy at the time.]

Between “Unchained” and “Solitary Man,” Cash’s health declined due to various ailments, and he was even hospitalized for pneumonia. His illness forced Cash to curtail his touring. The album American III: Solitary Man (2000) contained Cash’s response to his illness, typified by a version of Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down”, as well as a version of U2’s “One” produced by Rick Rubin, it was a Grammy winner, for Best Male Country Vocal Performance for Cash’s version of the Neil Diamond song “Solitary Man”.]

Iris DeMent was the youngest child of Pat DeMent and his second wife, Flora Mae. (As the baby of the family, she was Pat DeMent’s fourteenth child, and Flora Mae’s eighth.) She was born near the town of Paragould, Arkansas but grew up in Cypress, California, where she grew up singing gospel music.  
 
Iris DeMent grew up singing gospel music. During her teenage years she was first exposed to country, folk, and R&B, drawing influence from Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, and Joni Mitchell who we featured in our first hour.
 
In this hour, we will feature music from her debut recording, “Infamous Angel,” as well as its follow-up, the autobiographical, “My Life,” released in 1994 and we’ll play from her third Warner Brother’s release, “The Way I Should,” released in 1996, which contains some of Iris DeMent’s more political songs.
 
Also this hour we’ll feature more of Iris DeMent’s collaborations with other artists, singing harmony w/ John Prine, John McCutcheon, Emmylou Harris, Tom Russell, Nancy Griffith, Randy Scruggs, and Kansas City Bus Driver – Gary Kirkland.
 
After a series of jobs: as a waitress and typist, Iris Dement wrote her first song at the age of 25. She played at open-mic nights in Kansas City, before moving to Nashville, in 1988, where she contacted producer Jim Rooney, who helped her land a record contract. Dement did not make her recording debut until 1992, when her independent label offering, Infamous Angel, won almost universal acclaim. Despite a complete lack of support from country radio, the record’s word-of-mouth praise earned her a deal with Warner Bros., which reissued “Infamous Angel” in 1993.

Hoffman and Anthony J. Showalter, and originally published in 1887. Copyright is now Public Domain. Iris also included an earlier version of this song on “Lifeline” her 2004 independently released album of protestant gospel hymns, she grew up hearing her mother sing.]

A Personal Note:
 
I first met Iris DeMent when I was working at Kinko’s at 39th & Rainbow in KC, KS, in the early 1990s.  Iris came in to copy a few of her press clippings, and on another visit to make her wedding announcements.  Later I personally discovered her as a singer on Late Night with Conan O’Brien where she performed her song “My Life.”  Then I ran into her at the old Classic Cup in Westport.  I was nervous and shy, but she approached me and asked, “How do I Know You?”  Our paths crossed many times again and we bumped into each other at a Patti Smith concert in Lawrence.
 
Iris DeMent played three songs for one of our Big Bang Buffet shows back in 1999, at one of the first First Fridays,  at the Hobbs Building during Culture Under Fire. She took the same stage as the incredible dance performance by David Ollington that ended with his body being absent of all clothing.  Iris also did a benefit for Friends of Community Radio in 2002, and for KKFI in 2004, both times Greg Brown joined Iris in concert.  We were all surprised when Iris and Greg were married several months after their 2002 show at Unity Temple on the Plaza.
 
Iris performed her song, “Wasteland of the Free” on stage at the Uptown, to open for Michael Moore, because it was one of his favorite songs.  She played with Greg at Community Christian Church before Amy Goodman (of Democracy Now), took the stage.  Amy is also a huge fan of Iris.  Iris helped raise over $20,000.00 in both benefit concerts she gave for Community Radio.  She never took a penny. 
 
One of the biggest reasons Iris did all of these things was because Anne Winter was a mutual friend, and Anne asked Iris. Anne was like that really incredible mentor who challenged us all to rise above life’s mediocrity, and DO something.  She challenged us all.  But she also LOVED helping to make her friend’s dreams come true.  Having Iris play on stage with us at a Big Bang Buffet show was one of those moments for me.  Asking me to stage manage at the Michael Moore show at the Uptown Theatre, was another.  Inviting me to sing old time hymns with Iris and Anne, and Ike Sheldon of The Wilders, at Iris’s River Market loft was another.  Anne helped to make all of these connections.  Anne even went on tour with Iris at one point, to support her friend.  
 
Thank you Iris! and thank you Anne!  I love you both so very much!
