2. James Murphy – “Golden Years”

[Born February 4, 1970. James Murphy is a musician, producer, DJ, and co-founder of record label DFA Records. His most well-known musical project is LCD Soundsystem. James Murphy was influenced by Bowie and remixed songs for Bowie’s The Next Day Extras, and is credited as a percussionist on Bowie’s Backstar.][“Golden Years” was written and recorded by David Bowie in 1975, and originally released in a shortened form as a single in November 1975, and in its full-length version in January the following year on, Station to Station. It was the first track completed during the Station to Station sessions, a period when Bowie’s cocaine addiction was at its peak. “Golden Years” was more similar in style to the Young Americans funk/soul material from earlier in 1975 than the rest of Station to Station, that foreshadowed the Kraftwerk-influenced Euro-centric and electronic music that Bowie would move into with his ‘Berlin Trilogy’.]

[The video has had over 27,000,000 views on YouTube. The performance was the subject of a piece by Glenn Fleishman in The Economist on 22 May 2013 analyzing the legal implications of publicly performing a copyrighted work of music while in earth orbit. The song is the only one of Bowie’s for which Bowie did not own the copyright. Bowie’s publisher granted Hadfield a license to the song for only one year. Due to the expiry of the one year license, the official video was taken offline on May 13, 2014, despite Bowie’s explicit wishes that the publisher grant Hadfield a license at no charge to record the song and produce the video. Following a period of negotiations, the video was restored to YouTube on November 2, 2014 with a two-year license agreement in place.]

In May of 2013, Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, commander of Expedition 35 to the International Space Station, recorded a video of “Space Oddity” while on board the space station. This was the first music video ever shot in space. The lyrics were slightly changed to reflect Hadfield’s imminent return from his final mission. Hadfield announced the video on Twitter, writing, “With deference to the genius of David Bowie, here’s Space Oddity, recorded on board the Station. A last glimpse of the World.” Bowie responded to the video, tweeting back to Hadfield, “Hallo Spaceboy”.

David Bowie seemed to be from another world. He seemed to have multiple lives, he seemed immortal. His art kept coming. His influence vast. He was a guide. Much of my journey as an outsider queer kid finding a way through, was influenced by Bowie.

Bowie’s death, three years ago, in New York City, on January 10, 2016 sent shock waves of grief across the world. Bowie made over 50 years of music, for those of us who felt left out.

Bowie was a “gateway drug” to other important influences: The Velvet Underground, Lou Reed, Andy Warhol, Iggy Pop, Glam Rock, Electronica, Brian Eno, William S. Burroughs, Beat Poetry, Mick Ronson, Tony Visconti, T-Rex, Kraftwerk, Klaus Nomi, Nicolas Roeg, Bauhaus, Gender Expression, and more. Bowie was a synthesizer weaving them together.

Thanks for tuning into Wednesday MidDay Medley, on 90.1 FM KKFI – Kansas City Community Radio. I’m Mark Manning. Today we Celebrate David Bowie with selected songs from some of his 27 studio albums, and recordings that Bowie wrote and produced for Lou Reed, and Mott the Hoople.

Plus, we’ll play some of our favorite Bowie songs performed by musicians he influenced: Joan As Police Woman, Nile Rodgers, OK Go & Bonerama, including two Kansas City bands: Soft Reeds, and The Band That Fell To Earth. We started with James Murphy and Chris Hadfield

And into this mix of original songs and covers, we’ll feature short stories about David Bowie, from nine of his biggest fans: Michelle Bacon, Barry Lee, Ben Grimes, Cody Wyoming, Krystle Warren, Jesse Bartmess, Marion Merritt, Ian Michael Flanagan Johnson, and Nico Gray.

Our first story comes from band leader, musician, and director, Cody Wyoming, lead guitarist, singer, and founder of the Kansas City band, The Philistines, who released their debut full length album, “The Backbone of Night” on May 27, 2016 and was #1 on WMM’s 116 Best Recordings of 2016.

5. OK Go & Bonerama – “Rock ‘N’ Roll Suicide”
from: You’re Not Alone – EP / Capital / November 7, 2006
[Collaboration by rock band OK Go and brass funk rock band Bonerama, recorded to raise money for New Orleans musicians displaced in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina. The EP was recorded in August 2007 in New Orleans, Bonerama’s home city.] [“Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide” by David Bowie, was originally released as the closing track on the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars in June 1972. Critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine found it to have “a grand sense of staged drama previously unheard of in rock & roll”. The exhortation “Oh no, love, you’re not alone” references the Jacques Brel song “You’re Not Alone” (“Jef”) that appeared in the musical Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris. Bowie covered Brel’s “My Death” during some Ziggy Stardust live shows. Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide”, recorded on February 4, 1972, was one of the last songs recorded for Ziggy Stardust, along with “Suffragette City”, which would immediately precede it in the album track list. As the final song on the album and climax to the Ziggy Stardust live shows throughout 1972-73, it soon became a slogan, appearing on many fans’ jackets.]

7. David Bowie – “Changes”

[Written by David Bowie, originally released on Hunky Dory and as a single in January 1972. “Changes” became one of Bowie’s best-known songs. The lyrics are often seen as a manifesto for his chameleonic personality, the frequent change of the world today, and frequent reinventions of his musical style throughout the 1970s. This single is cited as David Bowie’s official North American debut, despite the fact that the song “The Man Who Sold the World” was released in North America two years prior. This was the last song Bowie performed live on stage before his retirement from live performances at the end of 2006.]

9. Mott The Hoople – “All The Young Dudes”
from: All The Young Dudes / Columbia / September 8, 1972
[The album was written and produced by David Bowie, during the same year he recorded and released The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Regarded as one of glam rock’s anthems, the song originated after Bowie came into contact with Mott the Hoople’s bassist Peter Watts and learned that the band was ready to split due to continued lack of commercial success. When Mott rejected his first offer of a composition, “Suffragette City” (from The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars), Bowie wrote “All the Young Dudes” specially for them, allegedly sitting cross-legged on the floor of a room in Regent Street, London, in front of the band’s lead singer, Ian Hunter. With its dirge-like music, youth suicide references and calls to an imaginary audience, the song bore similarities to Bowie’s own “Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide”, the final track from Ziggy Stardust. Described as being to glam rock what “All You Need Is Love” was to the hippie era, the lyrics name-checked contemporary star T. Rex and contained references to The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Bowie himself once claimed that the song was not intended to be an anthem for glam, that it actually carried a darker message of apocalypse. According to an interview Bowie gave to Rolling Stone magazine in 1973, the boys are carrying the same news that the newscaster was carrying in the song “Five Years” from Ziggy Stardust; the news being the fact that the Earth had only five years left to live. Bowie explains: “All the Young Dudes’ is a song about this news. It’s no hymn to the youth, as people thought. It is completely the opposite.” “All the Young Dudes” is also thought of as a gay anthem. Lou Reed said “It’s a Gay Anthem! A rallying call to the young dudes to come out in the streets and show that they were beautiful and gay and proud of it.

1972 was an amazing year for the 25 year old David Bowie

Starting with Bowie’s third album, The Man Who Sold The World, in 1970, through Hunky Dory in ’71, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars in ’72, Alladdin Sane and Pin Ups in ’73, Bowie records were built around a 4-piece band that included the great Mick Ronson on lead guitar, backing vocals, piano, and arrangements.

Mott The Hoople’s “All The Young Dudes” was written and produced by Bowie, in 1972, the same year he recorded and released The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars. “All the Young Dudes” was written specially for the band to keep them from breaking up, with Bowie allegedly sitting cross-legged on the floor of a room in Regent Street Hotel, in London, in front of the band’s lead singer, Ian Hunter.

During the year that saw the recording, and release, of two of rock music’s most important albums, David Bowie and Mick Ronson also served as producers on Lou Reed’s second solo album, the classic, Transformer, released on Bowie’s label RCA, in November of 1972.

In many ways Bowie was giving back to one of his biggest influences. Six years earlier, David Bowie’s manager Ken Pitt, returned from a trip to New York City, where he had met with artist Andy Warhol about the possibilities of representing a new, unknown group called The Velvet Underground. Ken Pitt didn’t much care for their music, so he gave the Andy Warhol signed acetate of The Velvet Underground & Nico, the band’s unreleased debut, to the 19-year old Bowie. Bowie said that receiving this acetate was “life changing.” He immedately learned the songs, and encouraged his band to perform, “I’m Waiting for the Man” in live shows, long before the album had been officially released. The Velvet Underground would mark the start of Bowie’s love affair with New York City.

I was able to view up close, this holy grail of glam rock music, the very special acetate, from Bowie’s own personal collection, as part of the internationally touring exhibition, David Bowie Is, at the The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, in September 2014.

Next we play the rare, previously unreleased track from the recording sessions of Lou Reed’s, Transformer” produced by David Bowie and Mick Ronson, from the incredible year of 1972.

10. Lou Reed – “Take A Walk on The Wild Side”
from: Monitor This / Monitor This / June-July 2003 (Transformer / RCA / Nov. 8, 1972)
[Produced by David Bowie and Mick Ronson. A previously unreleased version found during remastering sessions for Transformer release – different from version found on the BMG album NYC Man: The Collection. A Lou Reed song from his 1972 second solo album Transformer. It was produced by David Bowie. The song received wide radio coverage, despite its touching on taboo topics such as transsexuality, drugs, male prostitution and oral sex. In the United States, RCA released the single using an edited version of the song without the reference to oral sex. The lyrics, describing a series of individuals and their journeys to NYC, refer to several of the regular “superstars” at Andy Warhol’s New York studio, The Factory, namely Holly Woodlawn, Candy Darling, Joe Dallesandro, Jackie Curtis and Joe Campbell (referred to in the song by his nickname Sugar Plum Fairy). Candy Darling was also the subject of Reed’s earlier song for The Velvet Underground, “Candy Says”. Mick Ronson (who was at the time the lead guitarist with Bowie’s band, the Spiders from Mars) played a major role in the recording of the album at Trident Studios, serving as the co-producer and primary session musician (contributing guitar, piano, recorder and backing vocals), as well as arranger, notably contributing the lush string arrangement for “Perfect Day”. Reed lauded Ronson’s contribution in the Transformer episode of the documentary series Classic Albums, praising the beauty of his work and keeping down the vocal to highlight the strings. The songs on the LP are now among Reed’s best-known works, including “Walk on the Wild Side”, “Perfect Day” and “Satellite of Love”, and the album’s commercial success elevated him from cult status to become an international star.]

12. Joan As Police Woman – “Sweet Thing”

[Extra tracks from the solo debut recording of Joan Wasser, born July 26, 1970, known by her stage name, Joan As Police Woman. She is an American musician and singer-songwriter. She began her career playing violin with the Dambuilders. Throughout her career, she has regularly collaborated with other artists as a writer, performer and arranger. Kansas City artist Krystle Warren has toured around the world with her.] [“Sweet Thing” or “Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing (Reprise)” is a suite of songs written by David Bowie for the album Diamond Dogs. Recorded in January 1974, the piece comprises the songs “Sweet Thing” and “Candidate” and a one-verse reprise of “Sweet Thing.” In the opening line, “Sweet Thing” contains the lowest note Bowie had recorded in a studio album (C2) until “I Took a Trip on a Gemini Spacecraft” for the album “Heathen” (2002), where he growled the word “Well” (G1) towards the end of the song. Diamond Dogs was the 8th studio album from Bowie, was released May 24, 1974, after the ‘retirement’ of Bowies’s Ziggy Stardust, character. Diamond Dogs featured a new lead character named Halloween Jack, “a real cool cat,” who lives in the decaying “Hunger City”. Bowie, however, still wore the Ziggy haircut on the cover of Diamond Dogs, and the first single, “Rebel Rebel” continues his glam rock sound. However, with the rest of the album, music writers noticed a new Bowie. For his song “Sweet Thing” / “Candidate”/ “Sweet Thing (Reprise)” Bowie first used the William S. Burroughs’ cut-up style of writing. The song “1984” reflected the “plastic soul” sound of Bowie’s next release, Young Americans, from 1975. The Diamond Dogs Tour of 1974 was one of the first huge Rock and Roll, bus and truck tours. Bowie produced the show with a giant set, like a big Broadway production.]

For his song “Sweet Thing” Bowie first used the William S. Burroughs’ cut-up style of writing. Sweet Thing was from Diamond Dogs, Bowie’s 8th studio album, released May 24, 1974. The first single from Diamond Dogs was “Rebel Rebel” which continued Bowie’s glam rock sound, but the rest of Diamond Dogs was different, Mick Ronson was gone, Bowie was on lead guitar, music writers noticed a new Bowie, and songs like “1984” reflected the “plastic soul” sound of Bowie’s next release, Young Americans, from 1975. Bowie released his 10th album, Station to Station in 1976. It’s first single “Golden Years” was completed during a period when Bowie’s cocaine addiction was at its peak. “Golden Years” was more similar in style to his previous album Young Americans, but the rest of the songs on Station to Station were all foreshadowing of the Kraftwerk-influenced and electronic music of Bowie’s Berlin Trilogy of 1977’s Low, Heroes, and 1979’s Lodger.

Our next story, about Bowie, comes from one of Bowie’s biggest fans, Ben Grimes, founder of two influential KC bands: Soft Reeds and The Golden Republic. Ben Grimes now lives with his family in Los Angeles, where he recorded this story for us, along with sharing a special track, written by Bowie, during that Berlin Trilogy, and recorded by Ben’s band Soft Reeds. 14. Soft Reeds – “Sound and Vision”

Soft Reeds is the brainchild of Ben Grimes (formerly of Astralwerks’ The Golden Republic), a Chicago native whose roots grip firmly in the ’77 Berlin sounds of Brian Eno, David Bowie and Iggy Pop, with Austin, TX native Josh Wiedenfeld on drums, Beckie Trost, a fellow Chicagoan and childhood friend of Grimes on bass, and KC native John Mitchell on guitar, saxophone, keys.]

1977 was another big year for the 30 year old David Bowie. He released the first two albums of his “Berlin Trilogy” Low and Heroes, recording with longtime friend and producer Tony Visconti, and collaborating with musician Brian Eno.

Low came from the creative energy of Bowie’s previous album Station to Station, and music he had intended for the soundtrack to he film The Man Who Fell to Earth. When Bowie presented his material to Nicolas Roeg, the director decided that it wasn’t suitable. Elements from these pieces were incorporated into Low instead. The album’s cover, like Station to Station, is a photographic still from “The Man Who Fell To Earth.”

As a recovering cocaine addict, Bowie’s songwriting on Low dealt with difficult issues. Visconti contended that the title was partly a reference to Bowie’s “low” moods during the album’s writing and recording. Bowie said, “There’s oodles of pain in the Low album. That was my first attempt to kick cocaine, so that was an awful lot of pain.” Bowie and Iggy Pop went to Berlin together to try to kick their drug habit. Bowie said “And I moved to Berlin to do it. I moved out of the coke center of the world, Los Angeles, where Station to Station was recorded, into the smack center of the world, Berlin”.

Heroes was Bowie’s 12th studio album also released in 1977. The second installment of his Berlin Trilogy with Brian Eno .”Heroes” developed the sound of Low and featured the contributions of guitarist Robert Fripp, who flew in from the US to record his parts in one day. Of the Berlin Trilogy, it was the only one wholly recorded in Berlin. The title track remains one of Bowie’s best known. Recorded at Hansa Tonstudio in what was then West Berlin, “Heroes” reflected the zeitgeist of the Cold War, symbolized by the divided city. Co-producer Tony Visconti considered it “one of my last great adventures in making albums. The studio was about 500 yards from the Berlin Wall. Red Guards would look into our control-room window with powerful binoculars.”

Their annual With Bowie’s untimely passing only three weeks before the inaugural concert, the event garnered an attendance of more than 800 at the Uptown Theater, and generated press from KCPT, The Kansas City Star and various radio stations, along with high demand for an annual show.

Jeff Harshbarger is a bassist, composer, teacher, radio show host on KKFU, and has performed with jazz, rock, tango and avant-garde collectives including Bach Aria Soloists, Krystle Warren, and The People’s Liberation Big Band of Greater Kansas City.

[Let’s Dance was co-produced by Chic’s Nile Rodgers, the album contained three of his most successful singles; the title track, “Let’s Dance”, reached No. 1 in the US, “Modern Love” and “China Girl” both reached No. 2 in the UK. “China Girl” was a new version of a song which Bowie had co-written with Iggy Pop for the 1977 album The Idiot. The album also contains a re-recorded version of the song “Cat People (Putting Out Fire)” which had been a minor hit for Bowie a year earlier. Let’s Dance was a stepping stone for the career of the Texas blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan, who played on it. Let’s Dance has sold over 10.7 million copies worldwide, making it Bowie’s best-selling album. Let’s Dance is Bowie’s 18th official album release since his debut in 1967, including two live albums, one covers album (Pin Ups, 1973), and a collaboration with the Philadelphia Orchestra (1977). The success of the album surprised Bowie, who felt he had to continue to pander to the new pop audience he acquired with the album. This led to Bowie releasing two further solo albums in 1984 and 1987 that, despite their relative commercial success, did not sell as well as Let’s Dance, were poorly received by critics at the time and subsequently dismissed by Bowie himself as his “Phil Collins years”. Bowie would form the hard rock and grunge-predecessor band Tin Machine in 1989 in an effort to rejuvenate himself artistically. David Bowie had planned to use producer Tony Visconti on the album, as the two had worked together on Bowie’s previous four studio albums. However, he chose Nile Rodgers for the project, a move that came as a surprise to Visconti, who had set time aside to work on Let’s Dance. Visconti called [Bowie’s personal assistant] Coco and she said: “Well, you might as well know – he’s been in the studio for the past two weeks with someone else. It’s working out well and we won’t be needing you. He’s very sorry.” The move damaged the two men’s relationship and Visconti did not work with Bowie again for nearly 20 years (until 2002’s Heathen). Rodgers later recalled that Bowie approached him to produce his album so that Bowie could have hit singles. Rodgers reported that Bowie came into his apartment one day and showed him a photograph of Little Richard in a red suit getting into a bright red Cadillac, saying “Nile, darling, that’s what I want my album to sound like.”]

[Lazarus features David Bowie on vocals, acoustic guitar, and Fender guitar; Donny McCaslin on saxophone, flute, and woodwind; Jason Linder on piano, Wurlitzer organ and keyboards; Tim Lefebvre on bass; Mark Guiliana on drums. McCaslin and the rest of the jazz group recorded their parts in the studio over a period of about one week a month from January to March 2015, and until later in recording were unaware of Bowie’s declining health. The song “Lazarus” is part of Bowie’s Off-Broadway musical of the same name. The album has received universal critical acclaim and commercial success, reaching the number one spot in a number of countries in the wake of Bowie’s death and becoming his first album to reach number one on the Billboard 200 album chart in the U.S. Blackstar is the twenty-fifth and final studio album by musician, writer, actor, chameleon, David Bowie. It is the 27th when you count the Tin Machine records, which you should. Bowie taught us how to be ourselves, to celebrate being different. Bowie understood the theatre of rock and roll. 2. Sunflower Bean – “I Was a Fool”

[3-piece rock band from Glen Head, New York and Brooklyn founded in 2013. The band consists of Nick Kivlen (lead guitar and vocals), Jacob Faber (drums), and Julia Cumming (bass and lead vocals). The group has released two albums, Human Ceremony (Fat Possum Records, 2016) and Twentytwo in Blue (Mom + Pop Music, 2018). The band’s appearance at the 2014 CMJ Music Marathon received good notices from All Songs Considered’s Bob Boilen and from The New York Times’s Jon Pareles, who wrote “New York is still home to bands as varied as Sunflower Bean, whose music suggests what might have happened if psychedelia had emerged after punk and the Police rather than before.” They released their first EP, ‘’Show Me Your Seven Secrets’’, initially through their Bandcamp page on January 5, 2015, and later via Fat Possum Records. The EP, which features the singles “Tame Impala” and “2013”, was called “astonishingly good” by the NME. (The band, fans of Tame Impala, had named a song after the Australian combo, noting that Tame Impala itself had named a song “Led Zeppelin”.) Cumming provided a good description of the band’s sound at the time to i-D: “We used to call it ‘neo-psychedelia for the digital age’, and now we’ve just been calling it ‘night music’, however someone may take that. It’s like if Black Sabbath mixed with The Smiths, maybe?” The band – then as now – toured relentlessly, gaining themselves the title of New York City’s “hardest-working band” in 2014); they still tour extensively today, both as headliners and as openers for bands like Pixies, Wolf Alice, DIIV, Foxygen, Best Coast, Cherry Glazerr and Sleigh Bells.]

3. Shy Boys – “Take The Doggie”
from: Bell House / Polyvinyl Record Co. / August 3, 2018
[Shy Boys are an American indie-pop band from Kansas City, Missouri. The line-up consists of brothers Collin Rausch and Kyle Rausch, Konnor Ervin, Kyle Little and Ross Brown. The group formed shortly after the trio became roommates in 2012. Kyle Rausch and Konnor Ervin were already band mates in the indie-pop band The ACBs and Collin had been playing for years in the Kansas City area in various bands. The three shared a love for 1960s era pop rock and soon started writing their own music. In 2014 they released the self-titled Shy Boys on High Dive Records. The album received generally positive reviews and the single “Bully Fight” was featured on Spin.com. In June 2014 the band recorded and released two more singles and one of them, “Life Is Peachy,” was featured on Stereogum. On April 4th, 2018, it was announced that the band had signed to Polyvinyl Record Co. They will be releasing their sophomore album, Bell House on August 3rd, 2018. The first single from the album, “Take the Doggie” and an accompanying lyric video were released on June 5, 2018. In 2011 we started playing songs from The I’ms, a duo made of up Collin and Kyle, who posted 6 of their self recorded songs on their Facebook page. We included this informal release in our Top Ten of The 111 Best Recordings of 2011.]

4. Approach – “The Luv (Clean Edit)”

[Lawrence based Sean Hunt is Approach. Sequenced, Produced, Recorded, Mixed & Mastered By: Aikido Bray at Prosidio Gardens in Lawrence. Sean Hunt writes: “Elegant Knock” started out as a beat album named after a production night I throw in Lawrence. It turned into a 10 track album that pays respect to a sound & vibe that I loved in High School. It isn’t a throwback project, it’s a “why aren’t we still freaking these sounds now” thang. My original concept was flipped when I dug out my old Ensoniq EPS 16+ and started funking around. The next thing I knew I was making an album I wanted to rap on. I did all of the production on the EPS (everything and it’s was headache) and made a few mixing edits on the Ensoniq ASR-10 (mainly stereo pans). I pushed myself to use the tools of yesteryear to capture the feeling I was seeking out (it was a pain in the ass and I lost a ton of beats in the process). I loved every second of it though. I feel like it’s the perfect bridge between my Lincoln Marshall project with Milkdrop and my album “Antique Mall” (coming soon).]

5. Melody’s Echo Chamber – “Breathe in, Breathe Out”

[Melody’s Echo Chamber is the main project of French musician Melody Prochet. When Prochet’s previous project My Bee’s Garden supported Tame Impala on their European tour in 2010, Prochet collaborated with Kevin Parker to produce her new solo material as Melody’s Echo Chamber. The material was recorded in Parker’s makeshift studio in Perth, Australia and Prochet’s grandmother’s seaside home in the south of France. The self-titled debut album was released on Fat Possum Records in the Fall of 2012. In 2013, the debut album peaked at 61 on the US Billboard Heatseekers Album Chart. Q Magazine gave the album 8/10 calling it an “intoxicating listen that’s well worth experiencing for yourself.” Drowned in Sound’s Dom Gourlay awarded the album 9/10 and stated: “Whatever happens next, she can rest assured safe in the knowledge that together with her beau they’ve conjured up one of 2012’s–or any other year in recent memory–finest debuts.” In October 2014, Melody’s Echo Chamber released “Shirim”, the first single from her upcoming second album. In December 2014, it was announced that Melody’s Echo Chamber would play at Levitation, the 2015 Austin Psych Fest in Austin, Texas but her appearance was later cancelled due to visa issues. In April 2017 Melody Prochet released a new track on YouTube called Cross My Heart and announced a new album called Bon Voyage which she is producing independently. Bon Voyage was set to release in spring of 2017. On Tuesday 27 June 2017, in a statement released by the family of Melody Prochet, it was revealed that Melody had suffered a “serious accident” earlier in June, adding that her upcoming tour would be cancelled. On 3 April 2018, Prochet released the single “Breathe in, Breathe out” accompanied by a music video. She announced via Instagram that Bon Voyage was scheduled to release on June 15, 2018.]

6. Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear – “Everybody’s Got Problems”

[Second single from their upcoming EP. Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear have garnered international acclaim, and new fans from all over the world. They signed with Glassnote Records and recorded their debut full length album in Nashville with acclaimed producer Jim Abiss. They performed their debut single “Silent Movies” on The Late Show with David Letterman, they’ve toured across the United States, and Europe, more than once. They were featured on CBS Sunday Morning, NBC’s The Today Show, and “Later With Jools Holland and played Bonnaroo, Pilgramage, and the Newport Folk Festival, and the Ryman Theatre, in Nashville. Ruth Ward has continually performed throughout her life, mostly in coffee shops and open mics, for over 30 years, even recording a solo record. In the midst of this she got married and became a mom, and was busy raising a family. Madisen Ward was born in Oklahoma, and grew up in the outskirts of Kansas City, Missouri. He graduated from William Chrisman High School in 2007. Madisen’s journey to become a musician, was “melodically passed down” through the songs of his mother, where Madisen grew up watching his mom perform at local coffee shops. Eventually he began to learn to play the guitar, and poured his talent for writing into the music to create original songs. They began playing Madisen’s original songs along with the occasional cover of a classic track, reinterpreted in their own incredibly beautiful performance of two voices and two guitars in harmony and orchestration. Their debut, The Skeleton Crew, was released May 9, 2015 and was our most played record that year and was #1 on WMM’s The 115 Best Recordings of 2015.]

7. Jessica Paige – “Night Train”

[29 year old Jessica Paige moved to Kansas City from Manhattan, Kansas, after caring for her ailing grandmother for several years. She told CJ Janovy of KCUR News. “After she passed away, I started doing music full time, recorded my album and started touring.” Jessica self-produced my first album “Sweet Nothings” with Nashville-based artists and producers. The album is a reflection of the life-cycle of a relationship; the exciting and insecure beginnings to the lamenting demise of something that was once beautiful. The single released from the album, “Beautiful Life,” is a soul-pop reflection of someone trying to reconcile the conflicting emotions of trying to rescue or walk away from a relationship, while still appreciating how beautiful it is to love, regardless of how things turnout. While working on “Sweet Nothings,” Jessica settled in to Kansas City to start working with a full band and laying the groundwork for her next album.]

10. Parquet Courts – “Almost Had to Start a Fight / In and Out of Patience”
from: Wide Awake / Rough Trade / May 18, 2018
[6th studio album from Parquet Courts, of Denton, Texas, currently residing in New York City, New York. The band consists of Andrew Savage on vocals & guitar, Austin Brown on vocals & guitar, Sean Yeaton on bass, and Max Savage on drums. The band released their debut album, American Specialties, as a limited cassette release, in 2011. The band’s second studio album, Light Up Gold (2012), was initially released on Savage’s Dull Tools label and later reissued on What’s Your Rupture? in 2013.[1] Light Up Gold received widespread critical acclaim in both the DIY underground and mainstream rock press. In 2014, the band reached #55 on the Billboard albums chart with its third studio album, Sunbathing Animal. Later in 2014, the band released “Uncast Shadow of a Southern Myth” as a single under an alternative name, Parkay Quarts. Soon after they released their fourth studio album, Content Nausea, on which Sean and Max were absent, due to other commitments.The following year, the band released a mostly instrumental, experimental EP, entitled Monastic Living. On February 4, 2016, the band announced their fifth studio album, entitled Human Performance. The album was released on April 8 through Rough Trade. On October 13, 2017, the band’s co-frontman A. Savage released his first solo album, Thawing Dawn, through Dull Tools.]

11. Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever – “Talking Straight”
from: Hope Downs / Sub Pop / June 15, 2018
[Debut full-length album from Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, an Australian indie rock band formed in Melbourne in 2013 by singer-guitarists Fran Keaney, Tom Russo & Joe White. The band’s five members are Keaney, his cousin Joe White, Tom Russo, his brother Joe Russo on bass guitar, and Marcel Tussie on drums. Their debut EP, Talk Tight, was released in 2016 on Ivy League Records. It was followed by their second EP, the French Press, which was mixed by Doug Boehm and released in 2017 on Sub Pop Records. Robert Christgau gave Talk Tight an A grade, writing that “If you like the [guitar] effect—and why not, it’s beautiful—you’ll gravitate to it on sound alone. But what I’m loving at least as much is lyrics that suit the bright white male culture the sound implies.” He also compared the band’s sound to that of the Go-Betweens, a comparison that has also been made by critics like Stephen Deusner.]

12. Laura Veirs – “Seven Falls”
from: The Lookout / Raven Marching Band / April 13, 2018
[Laura Pauline Veirs was born October 24, 1973. She was raised in Colorado. She studied geology and Mandarin Chinese at Carleton College, and worked as a translator for a geological expedition in China. While growing up, she heard folk-country, classical, and pop music at home. However, she didn’t “listen seriously,” she says, until her 20s. At Carleton, she joined an all-girl punk band called Rair Kx!. After graduation, her taste moved to older country and folk, and during her time in China she began writing lyrics. In 1999, Veirs released a self-titled album, which was recorded live and featuring just herself and guitar. 2003 saw the release of Troubled by the Fire, accompanied by veteran musicians such as Bill Frisell. She then signed to Nonesuch and released Carbon Glacier. She also signed to Bella Union for European distribution. Year of Meteors followed in August 2005, and was selected by the New York Times as a “critic’s choice”. Veirs released her last full-length for Nonesuch, Saltbreakers, in 2007. July Flame appeared in January 2010 on her own Raven Marching Band Records. The Washington Post praised it. In November 2011, Veirs released the album Tumble Bee: Laura Veirs Sings Folk Songs for Children. The album presents mostly traditional songs, and features an array of guest musicians, including Colin Meloy, Jim James and Bela Fleck. Tumble Bee won a Parents’ Choice Award in 2012. In September 2012, her first feature film soundtrack was released: Hello I Must Be Going. The exclusive soundtrack features eight instrumental versions of previously released songs, five catalog favorites and one new vocal track, “Spring Song”. In August 2013, she released Warp and Weft. In 2015, she worked on the album Carrie and Lowell by Sufjan Stevens. Veirs husband and long term collaborator Tucker Martine engineered some of the album. Veirs was lead songwriter for the 2016 album case/lang/veirs, a collaborative project between Veirs, k.d. lang and Neko Case. The album received positive reviews. Veirs currently lives in Portland, Oregon. Her husband, Portland-based producer Tucker Martine, has produced her last nine albums, and plays many instruments on the records as well. Their first son, Tennessee Veirs Martine, was born in April 2010. In May 2013 they had a second son, Oz Rhodes Martine. Veirs runs a record label, Raven Marching Band Records, that has released her own and other artists’ music. In 2016, the label released Introducing Karl Blau, which was crowdfunded. In 2007, Veirs said about her lyrics, “I like to be personal in my writing, but not overly confessional.”]

The annual Out Here Now: Kansas City LGBT Film Festival, begins tomorrow June 21 and runs through June 28 at Tivoli Cinemas in Westport.

For the past nineteen years, Jamie Rich has served as the festival director for the Kansas City LGBT Film Festival, the city’s oldest and best-attended community film program. He coordinates the marketing and special screenings at the Tivoli Cinema in Westport, including the popular Open Circle Spiritual Cinema Series. Be here for the world premiere of a powerful, locally-produced new documentary about the most contested piece of legislation in Kansas City history.

Directed by historian and UMKC Doctoral Candidate, Austin Williams, THE ORDINANCE PROJECT commemorates the 25th anniversary of this landmark event through the voices and personal stories of those who were there. With insightful perspectives on the root of the local gay and lesbian civil rights movement, the film transports you back to the front lines of a life or death struggle within the context of the AIDS epidemic which fanned the flames of homophobia and forced issues of LGBT discrimination to the forefront.

On June 3, 1993, the City Council of Kansas City, Missouri added “sexual orientation” to its civil rights ordinance, capping an epic, three-year civic and political battle. While activists, organizers, politicians, and opponents spent years debating this particular issue, the fight for LGBT civil rights has a much deeper past in KC which continues today.

Austin Williams will offer an Audience Q&A following the screening. Keith Spare, one of the founding members of the KC Human Rights Commission, will also be honored with a Celebration of Courage Award for his many years of service to the LGBT community.

As Austin writes, “it was one of the most highly contested pieces of legislation in Kansas City history. It marked a turning point, after which discrimination against gays and lesbians could no longer be ignored, and it demonstrated how homophobia and the fear of AIDS were not only intertwined — they were inseparable.” More information at http://www.theordinanceproject.com

Austin Williams has been working on an oral history project, Responding to AIDS: Kansas City (1981-1995), and a documentary film, The Ordinance Project. His research focuses on the Kansas City activists and politicians who supported and opposed a series of ordinances introduced in the early 1990s designed to protect gays, lesbians, and people with HIV/AIDS from experiencing discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodations.

Austin has spent the last two and a half years studying Kansas City’s efforts to pass anti-discrimination legislation for members of the LGBT community. With the help of Stuart Hinds and the staff at The Gay and Lesbian Archive of Mid-America (GLAMA), Austin has pored through thousands of primary sources and digitized dozens of hours of VHS footage.

Austin writes, “I have been blessed to meet many of the activists and politicians directly involved in Kansas City’s fight for civil rights. People have invited me into their homes and shared their stories over cups of coffee. THE ORDINANCE PROJECT is our collective effort to capture their memories on film.”

Austin collaborated with UMKC’s Gay & Lesbian Archive of Mid America (GLAMA) and the Kansas City LGBT Film Festival, he is currently working on an oral history project, Responding to AIDS: Kansas City (1981-1995), along with The Ordinance Project.

Austin’s research focuses on the Kansas City activists and politicians who supported and opposed a series of ordinances introduced in the early 1990s designed to protect gays, lesbians, and people with HIV/AIDS from experiencing discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodations.

At the height of the AIDS crisis, the City Council of Kansas City, Missouri debated whether or not to amend its Civil Rights Ordinance to prevent discrimination against lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and people with HIV/AIDS.

It quickly became the most highly contested piece of legislation in KC’s history, galvanizing both supporters and opponents while exposing a social divide that is still felt today.

14. Romanovsky & Phillips – “Homophobia”
from: Trouble In Paradise / Fresh Fruit Records / 1986
[Romanovsky & Phillips is a gay singing duo named after its members, Ron Romanovsky and Paul Phillips. They are best known for their original recordings and live performances featuring songs combining humor with poignant observations about the lives of gay men (and to a lesser extent, lesbian women) in contemporary American society. Romanovsky & Phillips began their career at San Francisco’s Valencia Rose Cafe in 1982, as the musical break for Gay Comedy Open Mike Night. They mounted their first national tour in the fall of 1983. They toured extensively in the United States, Canada and Australia. Over the years the duo released seven albums under the “Fresh Fruit” label. Sydney Daily Mirror described them as “delightful and entertaining Ambassadors of Homosexuality.” Originally a romantic couple, the two ended that aspect of their relationship in the early 1990s, but continued to record and perform together, describing themselves as “a gay Sonny and Cher” (who had also briefly continued their professional collaboration following their divorce). In 1998 they presented their full-length musical, Jayson, at the 45th Street theatre in New York. A year later the duo decided to take some time off the road. While Phillips put music on hold to pursue other interests, Romanovsky took up a new instrument: the accordion. In 2002 he released a solo album in French, Je m’appelle Dadou. In 2004, Ron was commissioned to write a “circus opera” for Nurses for the Rights of the Child, a group of labor and delivery nurses who are conscientious objectors to male circumcision. After two years of writing and several workshop performances, It’s A Boy! was premiered in August, 2006 at the 9th International Symposium on Circumcision, Genital Integrity and Human Rights at the University of Washington in Seattle. The opera featured music written for accordion, violin and five vocalists. A recording was released concurrently. Immediately following up It’s A Boy! came the release of Pittsburgh to Paris, marking Ron’s return to song writing. In December, 2006, Fresh Fruit Records re-released all of R&P’s recordings. In 2007 Ron returned to the concert stage, this time fronting a four-piece band and performing his newest material along with several updated R&P chestnuts. The year culminated in a sold-out show in Taos, New Mexico, where Ron shared the bill with comic Vicki Shaw. His newest recording, Turn Up the Fun!, released in January 2008, is a return to his queer music roots, offering 14 original tracks featuring the characteristic satire, off-beat observations and poignancy that fans have come to expect. Currently, Romanovsky performs frequently in and around his adopted hometown of Santa Fe with his quartet, “Welcome to Bohemia”.]

Filmmaker Joshua Steven Allred based his film SINNER on his teenage years in Kansas City. In KU grad Hunter Harding’s TAYLOR SWIFT: LOOK WHAT YOU MADE ME DO a homophobic father learns his teenage son is gay, and responds by committing him to a psychotic, gay-conversion surgery. KC native filmmaker/photographer Keegun Selley profiles a local college student who is transitioning from female to male in HUMAN IS HUMAN.

MAN MADE takes us into the heart of transgender male (FTM) culture, revealing unexpected truths about gender, masculinity, humanity and love. Four trans men (who like the film’s director were born and raised female), take a variety of life paths toward stepping on stage at Trans FitCon, the only all-transgender bodybuilding competition in the world (held in Atlanta, GA). MAN MADE is a character-driven, intimate, and riveting verité-style competition film, but also a unique social justice narrative. It speaks to the ways in which we all choose to define and reshape ourselves, both figuratively and literally. We follow thier emotional and physical journeys as they navigate lives as the men they are, despite very real risks inherent in the current social and political climate. The strength on display in this deeply personal film transcends the physical. For the men of MAN MADE, it’s not about winning—it’s about being seen.

There’s no people like show people and there’s no telling what can happen when they’re pitted against each other. This brave new film follows a handful of young trans in Austin, Texas as they forge and fortify their adult identities. In an early scene, Elliot, a youth with choppy green hair, recounts how their father says trans people are ‘destroying the fabric of America.’ In the next scene, holding their phone in a shaking hand, they tell their mother, their father’s voice in the background, that they’re transgender. While trans identity is more visible than ever — the subject of television shows, talked about in the media, and tied up in controversial legislation — films that take us directly into the lives of trans youth are rare. TRANS YOUTH, by closely following seven different subjects as they navigate both the tumult and the ecstasy of growing up, lets us get to know them as individuals rather than stereotypes. Director Rebecca Adler will attend and offer a Q&A following.

WILD NIGHTS WITH EMILY

With the title taken from her raciest poem, WILD NIGHTS WITH EMILY sheds new light on the life of famously reclusive poet, revealing her hidden romance with her brother’s wife, and the irreverent side of Dickinson that the world at large never saw. Exploring the fierce rivalry between her brother’s wife and his mistress—who published Dickinson’s poems after her death—the film is also about the struggle to bring to life the work of one of history’s most gifted poets.

15. Thelma Houston – “Don’t Leave Me This Way (Single Version)”

[George Benson on guitar. Produced by Hal Davis. “Don’t Leave Me This Way” was covered by Motown in 1976. Originally assigned to Diana Ross, it was intended to be the follow-up to her hit “Love Hangover” but was reassigned and given to the upcoming Motown artist Thelma Houston instead.” Written by Kenneth Gamble, Leon Huff and Cary Gilbert. First charting as a hit for Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes featuring Teddy Pendergrass, an act on Gamble & Huff’s Philadelphia International label in 1975, “Don’t Leave Me This Way” was later a huge disco hit for Motown artist Thelma Houston in 1977. The song was also a major hit for British group the Communards in 1986. Thelma Houston was born May 7, 1946. She scored a number-one hit in 1977 with her recording of “Don’t Leave Me This Way”, which won the Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Houston was born in Leland, Mississippi. Her mother was a cotton picker. She and her three sisters grew up primarily in Long Beach, California. After marrying and having two children, she joined the Art Reynolds Singers gospel group and was subsequently signed as a recording artist with Dunhill Records. She is not related to Whitney Houston. In 1969, Houston released her debut album, entitled Sunshower, produced, arranged and composed by Jimmy Webb except for one track. In 1971 she signed with Motown Records but her early recordings with them were largely unsuccessful. Her most notable single during that period was “You’ve Been Doing Wrong for So Long” which peaked at #64 on the U.S. Billboard R&B chart in 1974. However Houston’s vocal prowess on that track secured her a nomination for a Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. In 1973 Motown Productions announced a projected biopic of Dinah Washington which would star Houston; however the project was dropped due to difficulties in getting clearance from Washington’s relatives. In April 1974 Houston joined the cast of The Marty Feldman Comedy Machine, playing various characters during the show’s skits. The show was canceled in August and for the next several years her work was limited to demo recordings and performing at small venues. Houston took acting classes and received her first role in the 1975 made-for-television film Death Scream. In that same year Sheffield Lab released “I’ve Got the Music in Me” a Direct to disc recording by Thelma Houston and Pressure Cooker that went on to become a benchmark vinyl recording for audiophiles. The following year she recorded songs for the soundtrack of the film The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings starring Billy Dee Williams and James Earl Jones. In 1975 Houston appeared on the Golden Globe Award broadcast performing the nominated song “On & On” and also was featured in a tribute to Berry Gordy on that year’s American Music Award broadcast singing “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy”. That year Houston’s version of “Do You Know Where You’re Going To” was being set for single release when it was pulled and the song given to Diana Ross to serve as the theme song for the movie Mahogany. In 1976 Houston sang backing vocals for Motown label mate Jermaine Jackson on his album My Name Is Jermaine. Houston released her third album Any Way You Like It in 1976. The first single released was her version of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes’ 1975 song “Don’t Leave Me This Way”. In February 1977 the track hit Number 1 in the U.S. on the R&B and Club Play Singles charts, then in April 1977 on the Billboard Hot 100. “Don’t Leave Me This Way” won Houston the Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the Grammys for 1977. Besides its US success “Don’t Leave Me This Way” became a hit in at least twelve countries, including the UK where it reached Number 13 despite the concurrent single release of the Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes original, which reached Number 5. Also in 1977 Houston teamed up with Jerry Butler to record the album Thelma & Jerry and that November 1977 she co-starred in the film Game Show Models. It was announced in February 1977 that Houston would star as Bessie Smith in a filmation of the play Me and Bessie, to be produced by Motown; after an announcement that December that Houston was set to portray Bessie Smith in a biopic to be produced in 1978 by Columbia Pictures nothing more was heard of the project.]

Tributes to Iris DeMent & David Bowie
+ Michelle Bacon & Katy Guillen of The Band That Fell To Earth

In our 1st hour, we celebrated the birthday of Iris DeMent, born January 5, 1961, in rural Paragould, Arkansas. She was the youngest of 14 children. At the age of 3, her devoutly religious family moved to California, where she grew up singing gospel music. During her teenage years, Iris was exposed to country, folk, & R&B, drawing influence from Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, & Joni Mitchell.

Iris moved to the midwest and after a series of jobs as a waitress and typist, she wrote her first song at the age of 25. She moved to Kansas City and played Harling’s Upstairs and open-mic nights alongside Scott Hrabko and Howard Iceberg. Iris met producer Jim Rooney in Nashville, in 1988, who helped her land a record contract.

Iris Dement made her recording debut in 1992, with her independently produced album, “Infamous Angel.” The record won critical acclaim and John Prine mentioned Iris in his list of favorite recordings of the year published in Rolling Stone. Despite a complete lack of support from country radio, the word of mouth praise for Iris DeMent’s “Infamous Angel” earned her a deal with Warner Bros Records, which reissued “Infamous Angel” in 1993. We started the show with a song originally from that album called, “Let The Mystery Be” that was lovingly covered by her husband, the great folk singer songwriter – Greg Brown. “Let The Mystery Be” has also been covered by David Bryne, 10,000 Maniacs, Bun E. Carlos of Cheap Trick, and it was the theme song for the second season of The Leftovers.

[Iris Dement’s song “Let The Mystery Be” from her debut Infamous Angel, from 1992. This song was covered by David Bryne, 10,000 Maniacs, Bun E. Carlos, and many others, it also became the theme song for the 2nd season of The Leftovers.While Greg Brown was recording this album, lighting hit the studio where Greg Brown he was recording songs for his 24th album: Freak Flag, the title track was all that remained of the lost original album. Greg wrote ten new songs, recording them at Memphis, Tennessee’s legendary Ardent Studios. Produced by Bo Ramsey, the album also includes a cover of Pieta Brown’s song ”Remember the Sun.”]

Full disclosure, I love Iris DeMent. I’ve seen her live, in-concert, over 8 times. I met Iris DeMent when I was working at Kinkos at 39th & Rainbow in 1992. Iris came in to copy press clippings, she was in the process of releasing her debut album. I wasn’t familiar with her music until I saw her on Late Night with Conan O’Brien in 1995, where she performed her song, “My Life.” I was blown away. I had video-taped the show, and I would replay that song for everyone that came to visit. I wanted everyone to know about Iris DeMent.

I ran into Iris at Classic Cup in Westport. By this point I had become a big fan of her music and I was sort of star stuck, but she approached me and asked, “How do I know you?” Our friendship was able to continue because we shared a mutual friend named Anne Winter, who invited me to a holiday party in Iris Dement’s River Market condo where we sang old fashioned hymns, with members of The Wilders. Anne Winter had become a close friend of Iris and even went out “on the road” with her at one point. Because of Anne, I stage managed a show at the Uptown Theatre with Michael Moore, Iris deMent and the Wilders all performing. Anne Winter also helped arranged for Iris to play one of our Big Bang Buffet shows in 1999 at The Hobbs Building. In 2002 Iris agreed to do a benefit show for Friends of Community Radio. At this point she was living in Coleman Heights in Kansas City and invited Linda Wilson and I to a home-cooked meal at her house, to talk aver the details of the show. In 2004 Iris and Greg Brown performed together in a show with Amy Goodman of “Democracy Now!” to raise over $10,000.00 for KKFI. Iris never took a penny from any of these shows, and has always been such a generous supporter of 90.1 FM. She recognized as a singer songwriter how important community radio is for independent artists like herself, and she has always given back, to help keep this radio station alive. Because of Iris DeMent’s generosity, and in honor of our dear friend Anne Winter, who we lost in 2009, I vowed to pay tribute to iris on her birthday, each year, with this radio show.

Iris DeMent represents that place in the road, where Country and Folk music merged with honest stories, of working class people, not afraid to tell the truth about the times they are living through. Iris DeMent grew up singing gospel music, but in her teenage years, she discovered other music through the radio: country, folk, and R&B, and the music of Loretta Lynn, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, and Joni Mitchell.

4. Loretta Lynn – “You Ain’t Woman Enough To Take My Man”
from: Legends of Country Music / Columbis Legacy / 1997
[Live performance for Austin City Limits taped in 1983. Loretta Webb was the second of 8 children; grew up in Butcher Holler, a section of Van Lear, a mining community in Kentucky. Growing up with such humble roots had a huge effect on Lynn’s life and heavily influenced her music as an adult. Her autobiography describes how, during her childhood, the community had no motor vehicles, paved roads, or flush toilets. She married Oliver Vanetta Lynn, known as “Doo,” on Jan. 10, 1948, at age 13. In an effort to break free of the coal mining industry, at 14, Lynn moved to the logging community Custer, Washington, with her husband. The Lynns had 4 children – Betty Sue, Jack Benny, Cissy and Ernest Ray – by the time Loretta was 18, and in her early 20s she then had twin girls, Peggy & Patsy. No stranger to controversy, Loretta Lynn possibly had more banned songs than any other country music artist, prior to The Dixie Chicks, including “Rated X,” about the double standards divorced women face, “Wings Upon Your Horns,” about the loss of teenage virginity, and “The Pill,” lyrics by T. D. Bayless, about a wife and mother becoming liberated via the birth control pill. Her song “Dear Uncle Sam,” released in 1966 during the Vietnam War, describes a wife’s anguish at the loss of a husband to war. It has been included in live performances during the US – Iraq War.]

5. Merle Haggard – “Workin’ Man Blues”
from: Oh Boy Classic Presents Merle Haggard / Oh Boy Records / 2000
[Originally released in 1969, a tribute to a core group of his fans: The American blue-collared working man. Backed by an electric guitar that typified Haggard’s signature Bakersfield Sound, he fills the role of one of those workers expressing pride in values of hard work and sacrifice, despite the resulting fatigue and the stress of raising a large family. Included on Haggard’s 1969 album “A Portrait of Merle Haggard.” Included in this collection on John Prine’s Oh Boy Records.]

6. Johnny Cash – “Ring of Fire”
from: 16 Biggets Hits / Columbia Legacy / 2007
[co-written by June Carter (wife of Johnny Cash) and Merle Kilgore. The song was recorded on March 25, 1963 and became the biggest hit of his career, staying at #1 on the charts for 7 weeks. “Ring of Fire” refers to falling in love – which is what June Carter was experiencing with Johnny Cash at the time. Some sources claim that June had seen the phrase, “Love is like a burning ring of fire,” underlined in one of her uncle A. P. Carter’s Elizabethan books of poetry. She worked with Kilgore on writing a song inspired by this phrase as she had seen her uncle do in the past. In the 2005 film, Walk the Line June is depicted as writing the song while agonizing over her feelings for Cash despite his drug addiction and alcoholism as she was driving home one evening. She had written: “There is no way to be in that kind of hell, no way to extinguish a flame that burns, burns, burns”. Cash claims he had a dream where he heard the song accompanied by “Mexican horns”. Jones and Wynette, were nicknamed the “President and First Lady” of country music, and they recorded a string of hit duets that seemed drawn directly from their volatile relationship, which resulted in their divorcing in 1975. Their classic recordings included “Two Story House,” “Golden Ring,” and the humorous “(We’re Not) The Jet Set.” ]

Iris DeMent’s first three releases, all on Warner Brothers records, were critically acclaimed, and she received two Grammy nominations during this time, in the “Folk Music” category. Meanwhile country radio completely overlooked her original songs, and amazing voice, that has been compared to Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette. Iris followed up her debut record with the autobiographical, “My Life,” released in 1994 and quickly followed with her third Warner Brother’s release, “The Way I Should,” released in 1996, which contains some of Iris DeMent’s most political songs.

In the 2002 Iris DeMent did a benefit concert for The Friends of Community Radio at Unity Temple on The Plaza. I remember when Iris asked us if it was okay that she have a musician friend open the concert for her, we agreed because Iris was donated her talent to the cause of community radio. And then she told us that this musician friend was Greg Brown, who at this point was know all over the country, but had never before played KC.

Later that year, on November 21, 2002 Greg married Iris DeMent in a private ceremony in the office of Rev. Sam Mann of St. Mark Church in East KC.

Grammy Nominated Greg Brown is one of the most respected singer songwriters working in music today. He started singing professionally at the age of 18 organizing early folk concerts in New York City, Portland, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. In the 1980s, he worked and toured extensively as musical director for Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion radio program. He also founded his own record label, named Red House Records after a home in which he lived in Iowa. Greg Brown has released over 30 recordings and has allowed much of his music to be used to raise funds and awareness for environmental and social causes. His songs have been performed by Willie Nelson, Jack Johnson, Carlos Santana, Michael Johnson, Ani DiFranco, Shawn Colvin, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Iris DeMent and Joan Baez.

In 2015 Iris DeMent released her 6th album, with national acclaim, and a #5 spot on WMM’s 115 Best Recordings of 2015. The Trackless Woods sets 18 poems by acclaimed 20th century Russian poet Anna Akhmatova to life. Hailed as one of Russia’s finest poets, Akhmatova survived the Bolshevik Revolution, both World Wars and Stalin. When Iris randomly stumbled upon Akhmatova’s work in a book of poetry a friend sent as a gift, she was immediately taken by the sorrow and burden of the poems. Iris recorded the album with co-producer Richard Bennett in her living room over a five-day period. The project also fulfilled a long yearned-for desire to connect with her adopted daughter’s culture and history. Iris and her husband Greg Brown adopted their daughter from Siberia in 2005, when she was 6, and Iris says ”I’d never have made this record were it not for her.”

In his review for WHYY’s Fresh Air, Entertainment Weekly Music Editor – Ken Tucker wrote: “Iris DeMent possesses one of the great voices in contemporary popular music: powerfully, ringingly clear, capable of both heartbreaking fragility and blow-your-ears-back power. Had she been making country albums in the ’70s and ’80s and had more commercial ambition, she’d probably now be considered right up there with Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette. Instead, she’s lived a contemporary life, a somewhat private life. As she recently told an interviewer, “There’s a lot that goes into life besides songwriting.” And she’s taken her time in composing songs that fit into no genre easily.”

Iris released her 5th album, “Sing The Delta” in 2012, to glowing reviews from the UK publication UNcut, The New Yorker, The Boston Globe, The Chicago Tribune, and was #1 on WMM’s 112 Best Recordings of 2012. And Because we have lost so many great folks in 2016, I find it fitting to end this hour long tribute with “Go On Ahead and Go Home” from Iris DeMent’s album, Sing the Delta. [Born February 4, 1970. James Murphy is a musician, producer, DJ, and co-founder of record label DFA Records. His most well-known musical project is LCD Soundsystem. James Murphy was influenced by Bowie and remixed songs for Bowie’s The Next Day Extras, and is credited as a percussionist on Bowie’s Backstar.] [“Golden Years” was written and recorded by David Bowie in 1975, and originally released in a shortened form as a single in November 1975, and in its full-length version in January the following year on, Station to Station. It was the first track completed during the Station to Station sessions, a period when Bowie’s cocaine addiction was at its peak. “Golden Years” was more similar in style to the Young Americans funk/soul material from earlier in 1975 than the rest of Station to Station, that foreshadowed the Kraftwerk-influenced Euro-centric and electronic music that Bowie would move into with his ‘Berlin Trilogy’.]

David Bowie seemed to be from another world. I thought he was immortal. His art kept coming. His influence so vast. He was a guide. So much of my journey, as a queer kid finding my way in the world, was influenced by Bowie.

David Bowie was born January 8, 1947. In school he studied art, music, and design before embarking on a music career in 1963. Over a span of 5 decades, he sold over 140 million records and released 27 studio albums, if count Tin Machine, which you should. His career is notable for his reinvention, his pushing of the boundaries of gender, art and music. He was the first to create a concert tour that was a big as a broadway touring show. He was also an actor in many influencial films including: The Man Who Fell to Earth, The Hunger, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, Basquiat, and 20 other films. He also played John Merrick in The Elephant Man on Broadway. He influenced multiple generations with his music, films, music videos, and concert tours.

Bowie was a gateway to other discoveries: The Velvet Underground, Lou Reed, T-Rex, Iggy Pop, Andy Warhol, Glam Rock, Electronica, Brian Eno, William S. Burroughs, Kraftwerk, Mick Ronson, Tony Visconti, Klaus Nomi, Bauhaus, Gender Expression, and much more.

A year ago on January 10, 2016, two days after he released his 25th solo album, Blackstar, on his 69th birthday, David Robert Jones passed away at home surrounded by his wife Iman, son Duncan Jones from his marriage to Angela Bowie, and daughter Alexandria from his marriage to Iman. David Bowie’s death sent shock waves of grief across the world.

For his song, “Sweet Thing,” Bowie first used the William S. Burroughs’ “cut-up style” of writing. Sweet Thing was from Diamond Dogs, Bowie’s 8th album, released May 24, 1974.

She began her career playing violin with the Dambuilders. Throughout her career, she has regularly collaborated with other artists as a writer, performer and arranger. Kansas City artist Krystle Warren has toured around the world with her.] [“Sweet Thing” or “Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing (Reprise)” is a suite of songs written by David Bowie for the album Diamond Dogs. Recorded in January 1974, the piece comprises the songs “Sweet Thing” and “Candidate” and a one-verse reprise of “Sweet Thing.” In the opening line, “Sweet Thing” contains the lowest note Bowie had recorded in a studio album (C2) until “I Took a Trip on a Gemini Spacecraft” for the album “Heathen” (2002), where he growled the word “Well” (G1) towards the end of the song. Diamond Dogs was the 8th studio album from Bowie, was released May 24, 1974, after the ‘retirement’ of Bowies’s Ziggy Stardust, character. Diamond Dogs featured a new lead character named Halloween Jack, “a real cool cat,” who lives in the decaying “Hunger City”. Bowie, however, still wore the Ziggy haircut on the cover of Diamond Dogs, and the first single, “Rebel Rebel” continues his glam rock sound. However, with the rest of the album, music writers noticed a new Bowie. For his song “Sweet Thing” / “Candidate”/ “Sweet Thing (Reprise)” Bowie first used the William S. Burroughs’ cut-up style of writing. The song “1984” reflected the “plastic soul” sound of Bowie’s next release, Young Americans, from 1975. The Diamond Dogs Tour of 1974 was one of the first huge Rock and Roll, bus and truck tours. Bowie produced the show with a giant set, like a big Broadway production.]

David Bowie’s song ”Lazarus” was released on December 17, 2015, making it the second single from his twenty-fifth studio album “Blackstar”, as well as his last single released before his death on January 10, 2016. The track is used in Bowie’s off-Broadway musical of the same name. “Lazarus” was Bowie’s first top 40 hit single on the Billboard Hot 100 in more than 28 years. According to Bowie’s producer Tony Visconti, the lyrics and video of “Lazarus” were intended to be a self-epitaph, a commentary on Bowie’s own impending death. In November 2015 during the week of shooting for the Lazarus video, doctors reportedly informed Bowie the cancer was terminal and that they were ending treatment. The video features Bowie, appearing with a bandage and buttons sewn over his eyes, lying on a deathbed and finishes with Bowie retreating into a dark wardrobe. In the scenes featuring the wardrobe, Bowie is wearing a diagonally striped suit referencing the back cover of the 1991 CD reissue of the Station to Station album, where he is pictured sitting on the floor drawing the kabbalistic Tree of Life.

On November 11 Katy Guillen and The Girls released their newest full length release, “Remember What You Knew Before.” a collection of reworked songs from the 2012 album Katy & Go-Go, the 2014 Katy & The Girls debut album, and from theoir 2016 “Heavy Days” with one new song.

20. David Bowie – “Boys Keep Swinging”

[Written by David Bowie. It was released as a single from the album Lodger on April 27, 1979. During the Lodger recording sessions, Bowie had wanted to capture a garage band style for the track, and agreed with Brian Eno that the best way to achieve this sound was to get the band to swap instruments after this was ‘suggested’ by Eno’s deck of ‘Oblique Strategies’ cards which supplied the suggestion “Reverse Roles”. Guitarist Carlos Alomar played drums and drummer Dennis Davis played bass. RCA decided against releasing the single in the US, choosing “Look Back in Anger” instead. Bowie performed the track with a puppet body special effect on Saturday Night Live on December 15, 1979, joined by Klaus Nomi and Joey Arias as backing singers. During the broadcast NBC censors muted the lines “life’s a pop o’the cherry” and “other boys check you out”, but failed to notice the puppet’s bouncing phallus at the close of the song. It was performed only during one tour, the 1995 Outside Tour. Interviewed in 2000, Bowie said the following about the song: “I do not feel that there is anything remotely glorious about being either male or female. I was merely playing on the idea of the colonization of gender.”]

21. David Bowie – “John, I’m Only Dancing”
from: John. I’m Only Dancing – Single / RCA / April , 1973 (sax version)
[“John, I’m Only Dancing” is a single by David Bowie, released in two versions — entirely different recordings, but carrying the same catalogue number — in September 1972 and April 1973. Bowie later re-worked the song into the disco-influenced “John, I’m Only Dancing (Again),” recorded in 1974, but unreleased until 1979. The song is widely believed to be concerned with a gay relationship, the narrator informing his boyfriend not to worry about the girl he’s with because he’s “only dancing” with her. Bowie had been ‘out’ as bisexual since an interview with Melody Maker in January 1972, and the subject matter did not affect the single’s radio airplay in the UK, where it and the earlier “Starman” became his first back-to-back hits. However, the original video directed by Mick Rock, featuring androgynous dancers from Lindsay Kemp’s mime troupe, was banned by Top of the Pops. The single was not released in America, being judged too risqué by RCA and did not officially appear stateside until it was finally issued on the compilation Changesonebowie in 1976. While the hook (“John, I’m only dancing / She turns me on / But I’m only dancing”) has long been considered a gay tease, author Nicholas Pegg asserts that the song’s narrator “could just as easily be a straight man reassuring the girl’s lover”. Alternatively, it has been suggested that Bowie wrote the song in response to a derogatory comment made by John Lennon about Bowie’s cross-dressing. Musically in a light R&B style, the track was recorded on June 26, 1972, released as a single, and then re-recorded on January 20, 1973 during the Aladdin Sane sessions, in a slightly different arrangement featuring Ken Fordham on saxophone. Often called the “sax version”, the second recording was issued as a single in April 1973 with exactly the same catalogue number as the first release, causing difficulties for collectors. Generally held to be superior to the original cut, the sax reworking also appeared on early pressings of Changesonebowie before it was replaced with the original single version. In 1974, a completely reworked funk-influenced version was recorded as “John, I’m Only Dancing (Again)”, made during the sessions for the album Young Americans. Released in December 1979, the re-recording featured a much more funk-influenced take on the track, and has some similarities with the song “Stay” recorded for the Station to Station album in 1976. Originally running at 6:57, the track was cut for a 7″ single release, but the full version was issued on 12″ vinyl – the first Bowie single to have a regular 12″ release in the UK. For the B-side, the original version of “John, I’m Only Dancing” was remixed. After the relative disappointment of the singles from Lodger on the charts, the single gave Bowie some greater degree of mainstream exposure during a period when his work was increasingly being perceived as esoteric and experimental. The long 12″ version was included as a bonus track on the 1991 Rykodisk/EMI remaster CD of Young Americans, on the 2007 collectors edition of the album, and on The Best of David Bowie 1974/1979. The 7″ single version was not released on CD until 2016’s Who Can I Be Now? (1974-1976).]

25. David Bowie – “Kooks”
from: Hunky Dory / RCA / June 11, 2002
[“Kooks” is a song written by David Bowie, which appears on his 1971 album Hunky Dory. Bowie wrote this song to his newborn son Duncan Jones. The song was a pastiche of early 1970s Neil Young because Bowie was listening to a Neil Young record at home on 30 May 1971 when he got the news of the arrival of his son. British indie band The Kooks named themselves after the song. Hunky Dory is the fourth studio album by the English musician David Bowie, released on 17 December 1971 by RCA Records. It was his first release through RCA, which would be his label for the next decade. Hunky Dory has been described by AllMusic’s Stephen Thomas Erlewine as having “a kaleidoscopic array of pop styles, tied together only by Bowie’s sense of vision: a sweeping, cinematic mélange of high and low art, ambiguous sexuality, kitsch, and class”. The album has received critical acclaim since its release, and is regarded as one of Bowie’s best works. Time chose it as part of their “100 best albums of all time” list in January 2010, with journalist Josh Tyrangiel praising Bowie’s “earthbound ambition to be a boho poet with prodigal style”. The style of the album cover, designed by George Underwood, was influenced by a Marlene Dietrich photo book that Bowie took with him to the photo shoot. With new bass player Trevor Bolder replacing Tony Visconti, Hunky Dory was the first production featuring all the members of the band that would become known the following year as Ziggy Stardust’s Spiders From Mars. Also debuting with Bowie, in Visconti’s place as producer, was another key contributor to the Ziggy phase, Ken Scott. The album’s sleeve would bear the credit “Produced by Ken Scott (assisted by the actor)”. The “actor” was Bowie himself, whose “pet conceit”, in the words of NME critics Roy Carr and Charles Shaar Murray, was “to think of himself as an actor”.]

[Singer songwriter Amy Marcus was born and raised in Kansas City. She has been writing song since she was a child and last May 2016 she released her debut 5-song EP Brave with Kansas City based Serve Productions. Yesterday she released a new single that was produced by musician Zach Balch at his studios in Dallas. The new song is called here in KC and is hoping to get started on recording a full length album this Spring with Zach Balch, who recorded and produced “I Want More For My Daughters.” Amy writes music to bring her honest lyrics to life. Amy Marcus studied photography at the Kansas City Art Institute. She is a mother of three and works as a professional photographer and personal chef. Amy is currently making preparations to start recording a full length album this Spring with musical friend, Zach Balch.]

19. Joon Moon – “Tiger (Radio Edit)”

[First full length album from band formed in 2014 in Montmartre area of Paris. This follows the June 2017 release of their EP Tiger, their April 2016 EP, Call Me, and their October 2015 EP Chess. Joon Moon is the meeting of House producer Julien Decoret, drummer Raphael Chassin and American expat and singer/song writer extraordinaire Krystle Warren. After ten years of touring the world playing double bass with Marc Collin’s Nouvelle Vague ensemble, alongside excursions into house music on the Yellow Productions Art of Disco compilations, not to mention co-producing Florent Marchet’s Bamby Galaxy album, it was time for songwriter/producer/renaissance man Julien Decoret to dedicate his heart and soul to a new challenge. With Raphaël Chassin, (Hugh Coltman, Vanessa Paradis, Pauline Croze) on drums, helping out with the production and arrangements, and Sébastien Trouvé as sound engineer, Decoret set out on his retro-modern Joon Moon mission, laying out the contours of a world where trip-hop, jazz, soul and electronic music live side by side, sharing their joys and sorrows. The only missing element was that one last bit of magic, a voice that could take the project to ever-loftier heights. Enter Krystle Warren. She had worked with Rufus Wainwright, and Scritti Politti’s Green Gartside, and had made forays into house music herself by providing vocals to two cuts off Hercules and Love Affair’s, The Feast of the Broken Heart. That’s not even mentioning her own band, Krystle Warren and The Faculty – and its three albums – which display her impressive grasp of soul music, folk, blues…With Tiger, the band’s social concerns are brought to the forefront. A timely piece from a Franco-American band about the need to question authority and the power structure of society. Tiger sees its tension build up like an onimous populist, and turns into defiance. Art and love in a movement towards emancipation.]

The blues influenced roots rock trio is made up of Katy Guillen on guitar & vocals, Claire Adams on bass & vocals, & Stephanie Williams on drums.]

Sean Hunt writes: “Elegant Knock” started out as a beat album named after a production night I throw in Lawrence. It turned into a 10 track album that pays respect to a sound and vibe I loved in High School. It isn’t a throwback project on some I wish it was 96′ ish, it’s a “why aren’t we still freaking these sounds now” thang. My original concept was flipped when I dug out my old Ensoniq EPS 16+ and started funking around. The next thing I knew I was making a album I wanted to rap on. I did all of the production on the EPS (everything and it’s was headache) and made a few mixing edits on the Ensoniq ASR-10 (mainly stereo pans). I pushed myself to use the tools of yesteryear to capture the feeling I was seeking out (it was a pain in the ass and I lost a ton of beats in the process). I loved every second of it though. I feel like it’s the perfect bridge between my Lincoln Marshall project with Milkdrop and my album “Antique Mall” (coming out this year I promise).]

8. Expassionates – “Big Blue Town”

[Scott Easterday on guitar, vocals, Marco Pascolini on guitar, Richard Burgess on bass, and Sam Platt on drums. Expassionates began as a recording project in 1998. Scott Easterday had a collection of songs to record. He hired Chad Meise as recording engineer and they set up shop in the historic El Torreon Ballroom for its unique acoustics. The large ballroom is the only surviving jazz hall of its kind from Kansas City’s jazz era. El Torreon was a concert venue, the Cowtown Ballroom, and then a skating rink. After being a recording site for Expassioantes and other bands it became an antiques market and ultimately a church. Chad Meise set up recording equipment and a control room in the historic ballroom. Easterday sang and played guitar and keyboards and hired Kansas City musicians from diverse backgrounds in rock, country and jazz. Bryan Hicks, bass; Ryan Bennett, drums; Marco Pascolini, guitar; Richard Alwyn, harmonica; Mark Southerland, saxophone; Nate Hofer, pedal steel and Jazzbo (Bill Hargrave), trumpet. The resulting album, “Verse, Chorus, Bridge,” was released in December 1998. There was a live release show December 26th at Harlings Upstairs in Kansas City. For the next several years Scott Easterday played solo shows and duo shows with Marco Pascolini, who had played guitar on Verse, Chorus, Bridge, until they decided to find a permanent rhythm section to complete a four-piece band. Bass player Richard Burgess joined Easterday and Pascolini, followed shortly by Sam Platt on drums, who is also a recording engineer. Their first gig as a four-piece was Halloween 2006. The group played hundreds of show dates in and around Kansas City plus Austin, TX for Midcoast Takeover. In addition to the live shows the band teamed up again with recording engineer Chad Meise and drummer/engineer Sam Platt for a new CD album called Landscapes, released in 2008. Rather than growing stale, the four-piece live version of Expassionates decided to call it mostly quits in September 2011, although they continue to play selected shows since then. In 2015 Scott Easterday set about to reintroduce the first album “Verse, Chorus, Bridge” after 17 years. Scott brought together a new band of Kansas City musicians from rock, country and jazz styles to rival the one that recorded the record. Bryan Hicks, bass, and Nate Hofer, pedal steel, return from the original group but this time they are joined by Matt Richey, drums, Troy van Horn, guitar, and Patrick Alonzo Conway on sax and percussion.]

10:33 – Interview with Rebecca Liberty & Guglielmo Pieragostini

Guglielmo Pieragostini and Rebecca Liberty on the November 1, 2017 edition of Wednesday MidDay Medley on KKFI 90.1 FM.

Rebecca Liberty & Guglielmo Pieragostini joined us to share a story of Kansas City’s music community. This past summer, Rebecca, a longtime friend of Guglielmo’s family from Fermo, Italy, proposed a music project for Guglielmo to come to Kansas City and experience our music community as an observer, and participant in live performances. In six weeks Guglielmo was able to see and hear over 55 bands, in 25 venues, with invitations to play in live performances with David Regnier, Dead Voices, The Ants, and to jam with Kaye Johnston, Mark Lowrey and Zach Morrow. In just a few days Guglielmo will be flying back home to Fermo, Italy, but before he we want to hear about his experience in Kansas City.

Rebecca Liberty has been a family friend of Guglielmo Pieragostini for over 30 years and has visited Italy quite often.

This summer she proposed a music project for Guglielmo to come and experience Kansas City music and, hopefully, infuse him into the community that supports the variety of music and venue and the abundance of performance opportunities. While he has a band, the chance to play in public is scarce and collaboration hard to come by.

While he would not be able to earn any money during this project, the wealth of information and experience gained as well as exposure to a thriving community that works to support each other would far outweigh a lack of monetary payment.

Guglielmo Pieragostini wrote to us about his life:

I grew up in the small town of Fermo, Italy, near the coast of the Adriatic Sea.

I’ve been lucky enough to grow up in a family with a great passion for music, so I’ve been exposed to different types of music since I was born from classical to reggae to rock & folk.

I asked my parents if i could get an electric guitar, and i finally got it after a year at the age of 12. I created my first rock band,The Troubles, a year and a half later. I’ve continuously been in a band since then, composing mostly rock music and writing lyrics.

My current band is called Mojave. It’s a Stoner/Doom band that I formed two years ago with my friends Guido Andrenacci on vocals, guitar, & bass; and Lorenzo Mandolesi on drums. Our setlist is divided in two different tunings: Standard (E) and C. When we’re playing in Standard tuning I sing and play guitar and Guido Andrenacci plays the bass, while when we’re playing in C tuning i play the bass and he plays guitar and sings.

We’ve just finished recording a three songs demo before I left Italy to come to KC, and it will soon be available on our social media.

As Fermo is a very small town and has a poor music scene I haven’t been able to perform live a lot of times, also because of the nature of the music i play.

Rebecca Liberty has been a friend of my family over thirty years, and she’s been visiting us off and on over all this time.

Five years ago she visited and we had the chance to speak about music, my band and how hard it was for me to be a musician in my hometown. In that occasion she told me that Kansas City as a great music scene and that the music community is very supportive of each other.

This summer she returned to visit again and she invited me to come experience KC’s music community in real life. She proposed this to me as a music project.

She posted (without my permission) a video of me just jamming on my guitar on her Facebook, and within one or two hours the response was amazing. I rwas really surprised about it, because I didn’t expect it to be so strong and in such little time.

With a second post, she requested a loaner of an electric guitar, because i really didn’t trust to bring mine on the plane. Once again, in just half a day I not only had an electric guitar, but it was almost like the one I play. This made me feel more comfortable, and confirmed that this experience could really work.

Who am I? A lover of music and arts and supporter of the community. I am not a musician but do love to sing in the shower!

Thanks to our dear Anne Winter introducing me to many musicians here in town, my connection to the music community was enhanced. Anne also made a point to connect me to Howard Iceberg, leading to an amazing opportunity to sing a few times in public due to his kindness and encouragement. I was also fortunate enough to be recorded on one song, “It’s Not Over Yet”, from Smooth Sailing by Howard Iceberg & the Titanics.

I met with Abigail Henderson and organized a well-woman clinic for female musicians.

Overall, I invest in local music as often as possible rather than national concert tours. I invest time in supporting local musicians in as many ways as possible. Music has saved me on so many occasions. It has given me joy and celebration and solace in times of despair.

I am just trying to give back and this music project with Guglielmo was devised to expose him to the possibilities of life as a working musician as well as the realities of working a “day job” to support the passion of music.

Guglielmo Pieragostini arrived in KC in mid-September and leaves after 6 weeks of infusion into KC’s music community at over 15 venues, hearing over 55 bands and playing in live performances with 2 different bands, in 4 shows, and jamming with local musicians.

This music project provided him with a wealth of information and experiences as well as exposure to a thriving community that works to support each other often across genres.

Guglielmo Pieragostini’s Reflections on Kansas City:

It’s not easy for me to express in words all the feelings I went through during this music project. I really had no idea what I was going to experience.

The Kansas City music scene is way different than Italy’s especially Fermo’s. Mostly that’s because Fermo is a very small town compared to Kansas City. The main difference is that back in my hometown, we only have music shows on the weekend, and it’s mostly dj sets. It’s quite rare to stumble in a good live show. Sometimes to hear an interesting band we have to go in different towns.

In the first three or four weeks of my staying here, when I was walking around (or being driven around), I still kind of couldn’t believe that I really was here, being able to experience all this live music in this great city. It really felt like a dream to me.

Here in KC I had so many choices for many different shows every night. It was almost unsettling because I was so undecided about where to go. The quality of the music is incredibly high. Maybe I was just lucky, but in the month and a half that I spent here, I never heard bad music.

The most amazing thing is the kindness of KC’S music scene. All these people helped me without asking anything in exchange, and that’s the most precious and invaluable thing about it. I don’t know how else to express this.

First of all, Marco Pascolini is one of the most talented and creative guitarists I had the honor to hear and play with. He really took care of me, loaned me all the gear I needed to play and he was just so happy to do so. He really is one of a kind. He’s the man!! I think I would let someone borrow my guitar but six weeks would be a lot of time and I would need to know the person who has my guitar. Marco showed me a lot of trust to get things started but he wasn’t the only one.

He also co-founded Mr. Marco’s V7, which happens to be one of my favorite KC bands. I got the chance to jam with part of the band! That really was different to be playing with Johnny Hamil on his upright bass along with Chris Fugitt on the drums and, of course, Marco on one of his many guitars! It was so fun to share the passion for music that we all have and it was an honor for me to play with such way more experienced people.

I went to the Brick for Rural Grit and I had never seen anything like that in my life. These people created a tradition to gather to play American Roots music and at the same time there is also space for experimental music with unusual instruments and styles of playing instruments. Kim Stanton and Mark Smeltzer obviously are relentless in the effort to keep it alive and going.

My first Monday in Kansas City and at Rural Grit, I met David Regnier and he almost immediately invited me to play with his band, Dead Voices, at the Ship five days later. It was a unique and very unexpected experience. This never happened to me in Italy and it happened so quickly I was shocked but quite happy.

At The Ship, I played two songs with no rehearsal at all so I was nervous but Marco and David made me feel more comfortable and at ease. They both were willing to take a big risk on me, a stranger… a guitar player from Italy that they barely knew. Being at The Ship for my first time playing in a show was a good start because Dead Voices had a great crowd and the vibe of The Ship is unique.

That same night, The Ants played and I loved them because they were just great. I loved their music. I met Chad Bryan, guitarist & singer of The Ants, who invited me to sit in with his band for an upcoming gig. The guys in the band, Chad, Sean, Brad, & David, really made me feel like a part of a family, practicing with them twice and playing 2 live shows!

Their music blending with lyrics is just so witty and clever and fun to hear and quite enjoyable. Playing with them was awesome because they taught me the basic foundation of their songs but they also told me to bring what I have to add to the songs. They let me loose and that made me feel free to play lead but I also did not take too much space.

I met Mark Lowrey at the Majestic the second week I was here, and I heard him playing with his outstanding jazz trio. He’s such a talented musician! He invited me to his jazz jam session that take place every Tuesday evening at the Phoenix, and finally last week I was able to go. I was very nervous about it because I never played jazz in public before, but Zach Morrow and Mark made me feel welcomed. We played a couple of funky jazz tunes including Chameleon Man by Herbie Hancock.

I was also lucky enough to meet Amy Farrand whom I had heard of and watched some of her videos back home in Italy. She made great music that was powerful and not only could she play electric guitar but she sang well, too. I really wanted to meet her when I got to Kansas City. I am actually quite shy but I introduced myself to her when I went solo to Outer Reaches music festival at The Record Bar. Even though we didn’t get the chance to jam, we hung out together a couple of times and had a great time.

In particular, Amy and I once met up at the Green Lady Lounge, another one of my favorite venues in KC, and we listened to Chris Hazelton’s Boogaloo 7, another one of my favorite bands. On that occasion, we met some of Queens of the Stone Age band members, that were just hanging out after their show in town! She was so kind to introduce me as a big fan to Troy, one of the guitarists, we got a picture together! She was very kind to me.

My experience at home is musicians normally have shows only on the weekend in Fermo but in Kansas City I saw that musicians play in a lot of different bands and genres and nearly every night there is some kind of show. Marco Pascolini was an example of this playing in so many shows. I also got to play with Mike Stover in two different shows and I saw him four different times impressively playing guitar, pedal steel, and the bass. There seem to be many musicians in KC do all this while at the same time having a day job.

When I arrived I wasn’t sure I could make it. I didn’t know if I was good enough to play here. It turned out that I could play here and along the way I learned more about myself and music. I became more encouraged to be less shy and more connected. I saw Mark Smeltzer from Freight Train Rabbit Killer play at Rural Grit three times. I told him I liked his experimental instruments and music. Our conversation turned to his philosophy of music which is to not be afraid to express yourself and put your heart out there with the music evolving. I really think this is how all musicians should make music.

I have been inspired to finally write some lyrics on a old riff of mine because of The Ants. It was great to work with David Regnier on song that we ended up playing at The Brick. I have absorbed a lot of new styles and new sounds that I can take back to my band in Italy and I can expand beyond my stoner band with this new experience.

I was very lucky to meet a lot of beautiful, talented, kind, and generous people who helped me out and made me feel welcome. It’s so satisfying to see how people of Kansas City welcomed someone, ME, that lives so far away and comes from a different culture. It was amazing that people can get together so easily and have such a great time playing music. This city really has a great music scene, and I really think that everybody should be proud of it and support it in the best way possible.

When I get back to Italy, I will try to do my best to improve the relationship between musicians in my hometown, and maybe, who knows, someday we will have a great music scene like the one in KC!

Kansas City based musician and songwriter Andrew Foshee joins us to share music from his new record, STRANGE RELATIONS, recorded earlier this year in Nashville, at The Bomb Shelter with producer and engineer Andrija Tokic, who has worked with, Alabama Shakes, Benjamin Booker, and Hurray for the Riff Raff. Strange Relations is “a hallucinatory song cycle from the perspective of a human being held captive by aliens in their spacecraft as they attentively study his dreams to better understand the human condition.”

“Previous to a few months ago, for the last six years I had been working as a sales rep and living a relatively comfortable but complacently unengaged lifestyle, making plenty of money but pissing it away on things like cars, going out to eat, and drinking heavily. Maybe a few things I won’t mention either. I would record demos from time to time when I felt inspired, but for some reason I always seemed to lead myself astray from my music right before something good would happen.

During this time I was also in an extremely toxic relationship where I became a jealous, insecure, piece of shit version of myself that eventually ended up going on hiatus from most of my close friends and family, usually drinking myself to sleep at night and becoming overwhelmingly depressed and anxious by the week.

This continued for quite some time until a rather surreal experience I had made me realize I was wasting my life and I needed to make some changes before it was too late. I felt like I had a lot left to experience in life and I had been sitting on a handful of songs I really wanted to share.

The whole Trump thing was also a real wake up call that this little spaceship we’re on could go down at any moment, so I guess I felt a sudden urge to produce.

I don’t want blab on, but the end result was me quitting my job, taking all of my money to Nashville last January, and making a record I always wanted to make.

Through the help of a friend I was able to connect with Andrija Tokic [who has produced records for The Alabama Shakes, Hurray For The Riff Raff, Benjamin Booker, The Deslondes, etc ] and we cut the tunes directly to tape at his sometimes creepy, always cozy, analogue home-studio, i.e. The Bomb Shelter.

Andrija ended up putting together this amazing crew of musicians, including Jack Lawrence, Jeremy Fetzer and Jon Esters, and it was a very surreal experience when everything came together in the end.

After things wrapped, I basically headed back home to Kansas City, left my sales job and started renting a room in this big, old house with four other musicians so I could save up some money and get back on my feet.

Honestly, I have never been so tired in my entire life but I have also never felt so alive.”

“Ever since I was a kid I’ve struggled with reciprocation. I’ve always had this underlying tendency to try and gravitate towards things I feel connected with on somewhat of a deeper level, and when I finally find them I get really manic. I remember when I was like six or something, sitting in my parent’s bedroom in our old house and Bob Seger’s “Night Moves” came on. My eyes got really big, and my heart rate instantly doubled. I got this weird feeling I hadn’t felt before. I think I started shaking. I was like, ‘Holy shit man. This guy gets me.’ I don’t think I even paid attention to the lyrics, it was just that chord progression coupled with his voice and maybe the way the drums sounded in that bedroom. It just all made perfect sense in a very surreal way, like some sort of alien was speaking to me in this new language I’d never heard, yet I understood every word he was saying.

I think if you try hard enough you can find a common ground with most people, but really connecting is a different story. Music has always been one way for me to feel connected, even if with only myself, and I think that was the day I figured it out.

We live in a very strange world in which we constantly derive meaning and values from a completely nonsensical ethos based in fear and ego. Music helps me challenge these boundaries and make sense of the experiences I’ve had within them, with the hopes that others can relate.”

[We were all surprised to hear the single Bowie released on his birthday, Jan. 8. His 1st new music in 10 years. In the works for over 2 years, Bowie is collaborating w/ longtime producer Tony Visconti who told the BBC that they worked on the new album at a very slow pace. “We never spent more than two to three weeks at a time recording,” Visconti said. “And then we’d take off as much as two months. We’d usually work on one or two songs in an afternoon and we’d whip them up to shape where they’d sound like great rock tracks. At that point there wouldn’t be any final vocals or lyrics. This is the same way I’d been working with him since The Man Who Sold the World. He hasn’t really changed in his approach.” Toward the end of Bowie’s 2004 tour in Europe the singer underwent emergency heart surgery for a blocked artery. There were rumors about Bowie’s health. Visconti told the BBC “He’s a very healthy man… I couldn’t explain how I know that, but I worked with a very healthy David Bowie in the studio and a very happy David Bowie in the studio.”]

Drew Black and Dirty Electric is a four-piece group that is the brainchild of Drew Black (formerly of The Belated), who wrote and released his solo album “Wanderlust” in early 2012. The band will play the recordBar, Saturday, January 26, with She’s A Keeper, Molly Picture Club, and Antennas Up for the first of 5 MidCoast Takeover Fundraisers.

In the coming weeks Wednesday MidDay Medley will feature the music from KC area bands participating in The MidCoast Takeover fundraiser shows. Proceeds from these shows benefit the Midwest Music Foundation’s SXSW MidCoast Takeover, the annual showcase, that this year will showcase over 40 bands from the KC area, over 4 days, March 13 – 16, at the Shangri-La, on East 6th Street, in Austin, Texas.

The Deli KC Editor, Michelle Bacon, who is also a dedicated Midwest Music Foundation volunteer, and member of the bands: Deco Auto, Dolls on Fire, along with Terra Peal who is part of the band The Quivers joined us to give us the details on this year’s MidCoast Takeover.

Drew Black and Dirty Electric will be playing the MidCoast Takeover Fundraiser on Saturday night at the recordBar with: She’s A Keeper, Molly Picture Club, and Antennas Up.

Mat Shoare is a Kansas City based singer, guitarist, songwriter, record label founder. His brand new solo record,”Domestic Partnership” was officially released December 11, 2012, on Golden Sound Records. This is Mat’s second full length solo release. He also released a solo EP. Mat has released two EPs with his band The Empty Spaces, and was a member of the band Everyday/Everynight. All of the music is available at Golden Sound Records, and independent, Kansas City based record label Mat founded with his friends Jerad Tomasino and Ross Brown.

Mat prefers the homemade sound and feel in his recordings. The Golden Sound Records website reports that most parts of his album were recorded in multiple bedrooms, basements, and offices from winter 2011 through the fall of 2012.

The Golden Sound Records website describes “Domestic Partnership” as a recollection of love, loss, and love again. Then loss…and so forth.”

On Domestic Partnership, all of the songs were written and performed by Mat Shoare. Made by Mat Shoare and Ross Brown. It was finally focused into something cohesive by Ross Brown at The Reservation in Kansas City, MO.

Ross plays drums on Domestic Partnership and also with Mat’s band The Empty Spaces. The band has released two EPs including 2012’s “Party Line” which was part of Wednesday MidDay Medley’s 112 Best Recordings of 2012. Mat’s solo work is very different for his work with the band, even though his band evolved out of the recording of your first full length solo recording.

[Last month, Arthur Jack Seume, the son of local singer-songwriter David Seume and his wife, Kelly, died, just five weeks shy of his due date. An unknown knot in the umbilical cord had tightened its grip. David Seume wrote about this tragic loss on his blog davidsueme.com where he very eloquently expressed his despair, and his questions, and his attempt, through ART, to “making sense of the senseless.” With his wife Kelly they are starting a memorial fund in Arthur’s name. David has recorded a new song, “All I Have to Give,” which can be downloaded, in support of Arthur. All proceeds go to the Arthur Jack Seume Memorial Fund. 11. Spencer Ward – “One Life”

The Broadcast premiere of Spencer Ward’s new song “One Life.” Spencer Ward grew up in the KC Area. He graduated from Shawnee Mission South High School, and received his Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Science and Holistic Health. In 2011 he released 4 song EP and is currently working on a new recording. Spencer is also an actor, and he recently worked in two new local films the will be making their premieres this year. Spencer also spent 13 years as an amatuer and professional boxer, where he had over 30 fights. We talked with Spencer about performing in Nashville, and his life growing up in a boxing and theatre family, and his new music.

“One Life” is one Spencer’s new songs that was just recently recorded and produced by David Lichtenauer.

Spencer grew up taking piano lessons, but didn’t really find his passion for music until he was taking audio and engineering and recording classes at Johnson County Community College.

One of his teachers, Mike Moreland, helped to encourage him to record and create new songs.

Spencer grew up in and musical family. His parents met while studying Theatre at Tarkio and performed in Plays and Musical and worked as commercial actors in print and television. Spencer’s sister is a performer too.

Spencer also grew up in the world of boxing. His father was an undefeated boxer, who and is now a trainer, and manager of The Underground Boxing Company in Overland Park, Kansas. Spencer’s brother Keaton is also a boxer.

Spencer has recently worked as an actor in two new short films produced here in the KC area.

A short student film called “Infected,” written and directed by Taylre Jones.

Spencer also appears in and the new short film “Martini Lunch,” written and directed by Nathan Kincaid, a Kansas City native who studied film in San Francisco and England. Nathan was recently selected as a Robert Altman Emerging Filmmaker in KC. This film will be shown in film festivals in Kansas City and all around the world. Spencer plays the main character of Charlie, a young busboy working in one of Kansas City’s most upscale restaurants in the 1950’s. Charlie serves the many wealthy and influential patrons, and overhears brief snippets of their conversations. Much of the film was shot in Kansas City’d Savoy Restaurant and also features former Mayor of Kansas City, and State Senator, Dr. Charles B. Wheeler, in a key role.

Spencer also works in the world of healthy food and healthy living. Spencer works at Whole Foods and talked about how Whole foods has opened the doors for him to do shows in Las Vegas, and Nashville.

Spencer also has performed Gavin DeGraw’s club in Nashville and at famous Bluebird Cafe.

Spencer considers Brett Dennen to be one of his biggest inspirations.
