[Bayou-born soul sensation, Durand Jones got his start in the church, after being forced to sing in the choir of his rural hometown Hillaryville, Louisiana because his Grandmother thought he sang too much at home. When his music career took him to Bloomington, Indiana, he was selected to join the legendary Indiana University Soul Revue, and it was through his involvement that he met writer/producer duo Aaron Frazer and Blake Rhein. The three began writing original soul music, recording themselves straight to tape in the basements of Bloomington – and their debut album is now available on Colemine Records.]

Formed in 2010, Victor & Penny are Erin McGrane on ukulele & vocals and Jeff Freling on guitar, & vocals. Victor & Penny have toured all over country and have performed at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts Inaugural New Year’s, the Missouri Governor’s Awards Luncheon, KC Union Station’s Centennial Celebration, KC Mayor, Sly James’ 2015 State of the City Address, representing Kansas City at a New York City press event for America’s Creative Crossroads campaign, “Paris of the Plains Goes to NY.”

Victor & Penny were named “Best Folk Ensemble 2015” by the PITCH; “Standout Concert of the Year” by the Joplin Globe; and are a four-time Official Showcase Artist for Folk Alliance International Conference, and have made over 1,000 personal appearances and traveled more than 200,000 miles in the last seven years. In 2016 Victor & Penny released their 4th album, ‘Electricity.’

Guitar virtuoso and one half of Victor & Penny, Jeff Freling is here in the studio to share details about the upcoming concert on Saturday, April 6, at 7:00 PM, at Californos, 4124 Pennsylvania Ave, KCMO when Victor & Penny with their full band The Loose Change Orchestra join forces with Oklahoma favorite Kyle Reid and The Low Swingin’ Chariots, for an night of high-energy swing, jazz, gypsy, original tunes, lots of laughs, and room for dancing.

Formally trained at Berklee School of Music (Boston) and the Conservatory of Music (Kansas City), Mr. Freling participated in the international program, The Acoustic Guitar Project in 2014 and is an accomplished composer, arranger, and outstanding instrumentalist.

After Kansas City Jeff moved to Chicago and lived there for 17 years where he played in multiple bands and was part of the critically acclaimed Blue Man Group band.

In 2017 Victor & Penny got married.

On Daisy Buckët/Spencer Brown’s 2018 debut record “Pansy” Jeff Freling not only oversaw making half of the album’s songs happen, {“Stars are Blind,” “Long, Long Time,” “What Makes a Man,” “I’ll Be With You in Apple Blossom Time,” “Hot Nuts”) but was also integral in the mixing process and lending his extra ears. Song credits include V&P band members: Jeff Freling on guitar; Brian Steever on drums; Rick Willoughby on bass; Ken Lovern on organ; James Isaac on tenor saxophone, and Erin McGrand on ukulele and background vocals.

Victor & Penny’s last full length album was the acclaimed, “Electricity” released in March 2016. “Electricity” debuted on the Folk Radio DJ charts at #12 with the #3 song. “Electricity” crackles and sparks with joy and regret; truths and dares; love and love gone wrong all set to a score of vibrant, rhythmic swing and virtuosic musicianship. Electricity is the culmination of 160,000 miles, 5 years and nearly 1,000 performances and is a testament to the incomparable vivacity of Victor & Penny’s live show, with newly added sophistication and rich instrumentation.

“Electricity” was Produced by Grammy Award winning Producer/Engineer Mitch Dane, and recorded at Sputnik Sound in Nashville, TN.

Electricity features Victor and Penny’s find band, The Loose Change Orchestra (LCO). The LCO’s rich, resonate sound is created by virtuoso reeds player James Isaac on clarinet, soprano saxophone, and melodica; Rick Willoughby on upright bass; and trombonist Kyle Dahlquist. Supplemental instrumentation includes accordion, violin, saw, mandolin, piano, and Hammond B3.

Sondra Freeman is Director of Promotions and Artist Relations for Midwest Music Foundation, a nonprofit created to support music and musicians in Kansas City and the surrounding areas, founded in 2008 by a collective of musicians and music lovers. The Midwest Music Foundation (MMF) unites and empowers the greater Kansas City music community by providing programs and resources to area musicians through outreach, support, education, and health care opportunities. Sondra is instrumental in MMF’s annual events: Apocalypse Meow, MidCoast Takeover and the MidCoast Takeover fundraiser shows, as well as many other collaborative musical events and fundraisers.

Midwest Music Foundation is in the midst of its inaugural Donation Drive, that started on Monday, April 1. The Strike A Match Donation Drive commences with a goal of $6000 to help local working musicians gain access to health care and valuable career resources.

On Saturday, April 6, the donation drive culminates with a Free Musicians’ Health Care Clinic at The Buffalo Room (817 Westport Road, behind Westport Flea Market), Saturday, April 6, from 12:00pm to 5:00 pm.

The Midwest Music Foundation along with the RockDocs, a collaboration of University of Kansas and the Community Health Council of Wyandotte County, present a Free Musicians’ Health Care Clinic that will offer information, screenings, wellness/smoking cessation programs, opportunities to discuss heath conditions/concerns and arrange follow up visits.

Colon Cancer screening FIT test kits will be provided to those that qualify (anyone 50-75 years old who are not up to date with colon screening) through a generous grant from the Colon Cancer Coalition. Get Your Rear in Gear – Kansas City will be on site with more information and the infamous #stolencolon will be there!

Truman Medical Center (www.trumed.org) will also be at the clinic from 12-3. Truman Medical Centers is an academic health center providing accessible, state-of-the-art quality healthcare to our community regardless of the ability to pay. They will supply information on health coverage for uninsured patients.

Bill Rogers, Physical Therapist, Orthopedic and Geriatric Clinical Specialist will be available to consult and help triage musculoskeletal problems.

There will also be representatives from Narcotics Anonymous (http://www.kansascityna.org/) on hand with information.

Priority will be given to musicians/music industry personnel, but the clinic is open to anyone.

In addition, the Midwest Music Foundation is providing custom earplugs to the first 20 qualified musicians/music industry personnel to apply. Impressions will be done by AudioGirl Consulting. (These slots are currently filled, but sign up for our waiting list or info on future opportunities).

Brandon, Zach, & Adam Phillips come from an artistic family. Their father was a jazz musician, playwright, and actor and their mother an art teacher. The brothers started by playing AC/DC covers, but moved on to original songs and a broader range of influences. In 1991 they formed their first band and a 14-year-old Brandon led his younger brothers Zach & Adam into a seedy bar in KC to play their first gig to the small crowd of locals. In 1997 the brother’s a ska and rock & roll band, The Gadjits, released their debut album, Da Gravy on Yo’ Grits, on their own JoCo Ska label. They went on record five full length albums on Hellcat Records, Thick Records and an unreleased album for RCA Records. They appeared on The Vans Warped Tour, and supported the Skatallites, Rancid, and Let’s Go Bowling on the road.

In 2004 The Gadjits ended and the brothers formed a new band called The Architects who have released six full length albums and two EPs, including The Border Wars graphic novel/EP series, on which they worked with illustrator Mallory Dorn.

In the past three years the brothers have branched of into multiple musical and recording projects including Other Americans with Julie Berndsen (formerly of the Latenight Callers) on lead vocals, Radar State where Adam plays drums, and Brandon Phillips and The Condition with Brandon on vocals, Adam on drums, Zach on bass, former Gadjit member Ehren Starks on keyboard, Rachel Mallin (of Rachel Mallin & the Wild Type) on guitar, and Julie Berndsen on backup vocals. This ensemble changes based on availability of all involved.

[Show Me the Body is an American hardcore punk band formed in New York City in 2009. They released “Yellow Kidney” independently in 2015 followed by the “SMTB” EP released via the Letter Racer Collective that same year. After signing with Loma Vista and releasing their debut album “Body War” in 2016, SMTB began touring the US and Europe. Upon returning home the band began a collaborative mixtape project called “Corpus 1” released in 2017. The mixtape featured a broad range of artists and friends who SMTB felt were comrades and innovators, marking the beginning of a community effort spearheaded by SMTB known as Corpus. In the same year, SMTB released a two song Ep called “Challenge Coin”, recorded at Electric Lady Land not far from where the band originated. Between the fall of 2018 and the beginning of 2019 SMTB produced and recorded three projects. All projects; “Grudge 2” by Dreamcrusher, “Machines Smoke” by Tripp Jones, and “Enemy” by Dog Breath, were released via Corpus. In 2019 SMTB presents their sophomore album, “Dog Whistle,” produced by Chris Coady, Show Me The Body, and Gabriel Millman (original drummer and in-house producer). Dog Whistle was written in Long Island City, Queens and recorded in Los Angeles California in the summer of 2018.]

[Soccer Mommy is the stage name of bedroom pop and indie rock musician Sophie Allison. Allison was born in Switzerland and grew up in Nashville, TN. She began posting home-recorded songs to Bandcamp as Soccer Mommy in 2015, during the summer when she was about to leave for college at New York University, where she studied music business. [Originally from Springfield, Missouri, this talented guitarist, singer and songwriter has lived in Nashville, Tennessee, since 2009. He studied at Belmont University in the Music City and dedicated himself to full-time music making in February of 2016 which got him out on the road. In his travels he kicks it through Kentucky, meanders to Missouri, then heads back to Tennessee before wandering up to Illinois or down to Arkansas for a few gigs. Yes, the guy stays busy playing his style of percussive, melodic rhythm guitar on a custom designed Craig Southern model backing up his smooth and appealing voice. He works off a song list ranging from unique mashups to top shelf originals, plus all kinds of styles in between since he can “jump effortlessly between folk, rock, hip hop and jazz” without breaking a cool sweat. 8. The War and Treaty – “Healing Tide”

[Full Length album debut from Michael Trotter Jr & Tanya Blount-Trotter are from Albion, Michigan. For Michael Trotter Jr., the journey began in 2004, when he arrived in Iraq, an untested soldier stricken by fear and self-doubt. His captain made it his personal mission to see to Trotter’s survival. The unit was encamped in one of Saddam Hussein’s private palaces, and in a forgotten corner in its basement, they found a black upright piano that once belonged to the dictator himself. When Trotter shared the fact he could sing, he was encouraged to teach himself to play piano on that confiscated keyboard. “I wrote my first song after that captain was killed,” Trotter recalls. “I sang it for his memorial in Iraq.” Soon after it became his mission to sing at the memorial services for those that had fallen. For the next three years, he sang songs that brought solace and comfort to the members of his unit. His efforts eventually garnered wider recognition as well. He came in first place in “Military Idol,” the army’s version of “American Idol,” during a competition held in Baumholder, Germany. Following his discharge, he was featured on the Hope Channel program “My Story, My Song.” Then he met Tanya Blount. Blount’s musically influences include Mahalia Jackson, Sister Odette and Aretha Franklin. The two fell in love, got married and used the experiences they had gained to create a new musical collaboration. The couple then secured the services of musicians whose skills add a distinctive sound to The War and Treaty’s blend of roots music, blue grass,folk, gospel and soul. Their 2017 EP Down to the River was released July 21, 2017. Recorded in Albion, Michigan, Down to the River boasts a sound that’s both stirring and sensual, driven by joy, determination and an unceasing upward gaze. The music is visceral but never morose, flush with emotion but void of despair… a style that touches on a variety of genres, but never finds itself confined to anyone. The arrangements are uncluttered– harmonies, basslines, guitar and mandolin licks, settle drum patterns and keyboards create an immensely moving soundscape — but the sentiments and emotions are fully realized and soar with a steady, chilling assurance. “The recording process wasn’t like anything I ever experienced,” Tanya recalls. “This EP has allowed me to breathe musically. I feel like all I have wanted to express for the past ten years has come forth with what we’ve done. The combination of heart, soul and the overwhelming amount of love that Michael and I have for one another comes across in this record.“ “I was sitting on the banks of the Euphrates River in Baghdad dreaming about one day being able to play and sing professionally for people all around the world,” Michael reflects. “As we recorded our music, I constantly had flashbacks of those desert dreams. I thought to myself that this is actually the perfect ending to usher in a new beginning in my life.”]

Shy Boys are on the verge of their national release, Bell House, on Polyvinyl Records. Shy Boys originally formed as a trio in 2012 with brothers Collin Rausch, Kyle Rausch, and roommate Konnor Ervin (of The ACB’s fame). The three shared a love for 1960s era pop rock and started writing their own music. Kyle Little and Ross Brown (of Fullbloods) joined to make Shy Boys a 5-piece. In 2014 Shy Boys released their self-titled debut on High Dive Records. Their single “Bully Fight” was featured on Spin.com. In June 2014 the band recorded and released two more singles. “Life Is Peachy,” was featured on Stereogum. On April 4th, 2018, it was announced that Shy Boys had signed to Polyvinyl. Being in a band is a sacred thing.

Being in a band that is from the Midwest in 2018…

Consider Shy Boys – DIY local champions of Kansas City, MO, who if you add it all up, are something sacred. Comprised of brothers Collin and Kyle Rausch and best friends Konnor Ervin, Kyle Little and Ross Brown, Shy Boys are the heartland’s answer to The Beach Boys had Alex Chilton been on guitar.

But if a harmony falls into a microphone in the middle of America does anyone really hear it? Some do. Take for instance Shy Boys’ 2014 self-titled debut on local Kansas City label, High Dive Records – I first came across this album while living in Los Angeles and catching wind of a band from my home town that I was told could “actually sing,” and after the first spin, through the muddy fidelity, man, could they actually sing.

Shy Boys’ history isn’t too dissimilar from any other Midwestern band. Like the many Replacements or Husker Düs before them – they exist neither here nor there, but instead, somewhere anonymously in the middle. And though you may not find the same opportunity floating in the middle as one would Here or There, you are allotted a certain amount of time and space to grow both yourself and your craft into what you want it to be. Over the past four years, that is exactly what Shy Boys have done and that is what brings us here today.

On August 3, 2018, the world will see the release of their second record, Bell House, out on legendary and globally cherished record label Polyvinyl, bringing both their profile and music to the surface for the first time.

The album’s title is taken from the band’s beloved headquarters – the old house on Bell Street in Kansas City where they lived together for the better part of 5 years.

“‘Lived’ is a loose term,” says lead songwriter Collin. “It was more like a bum den than anything else. There was a giant hole in the floor of the kitchen that had a piece of plywood over it. In the backyard, weeds got like 6 feet high in the summer. It was its own thriving biome. We lived in trash.”

Musically, Collin describes the songs on Bell House taking shape through “a group of guys trying to get through some sort of mutual identity crisis. The lifestyle became overwhelming and really seeped into the music.”

In the time since the release of ST, Collin saw himself falling in love and getting married, leaving the old house on Bell Street, and moving back into his mom’s house with his wife in a suburb of the city. It’s here where the songs of Bell House were born. Being back under the same roof he had grown up in where there was “still writing on the walls from childhood,” Rausch found himself reflective and looking out at his life as a whole.

Take closing track “Champion” for instance, a song Collin says is dedicated to his and Kyle’s mother. “It’s just a note saying that she took care of us when we were young, and now it’s time for us to be there and take care of her.”

The reflective spirit sprinkled throughout the album is also evident on lead single, “Take The Doggie,” a bouncy, guitar driven track centered around wanting to secretly rescue their neighbor’s dog from an abusive owner, or on album highlight “Evil Sin,” which tackles the memory of drummer/bassist Konnor Ervin getting robbed.

But through all of this, Rausch kept his passion in his band, if even for nothing more than to – in his own words – have an excuse to keep hanging out with his brother and best friends.

“I have to keep Shy Boys alive to have a regular excuse to hang out with them,” says Collin. “To keep the band alive, I have to write songs. To be able to travel with my buddies, there has to be a new record.”

There is an old term that’s kicked around in country music called a “blood harmony” – in which two people in the same blood line, usually siblings, harmonize with one another in real time. Perhaps that is Shy Boys’ magic touch, putting them just a notch above all the other angels out there in the indie rock choir, and it makes sense, though no longer practicing evangelicals, Collin and Kyle grew up singing besides their parents in their church choir, so their keen sense of harmony is nothing new to them, but instead a life practice devoted to the voice as an instrument.

The result is Bell House, and the result is beautiful. There is something sensitive to the touch about this album, which is perhaps another way of saying that, well – Shy Boys are indeed Shy Boys. I envision the band as a solid unit, with each moving part as an equal. There is a heavy sense of family in everything they do both, literally and figuratively. Bruce Springsteen’s 1980 song “Highway Patrolman” always seems to come to mind;

“Yeah me and Franky out laughing and drinking,
Nothing feels better than blood on blood.”

We talked with Ross Brown about Full Bloods and their critically acclaimed February 26, 2016 release Mild West released through High Dive Records. It was the second full length from Fullbloods. KC musician and recording artist Keaton Conrad joins us live in our 90.1 FM Studios. Keaton Conrad has received critical acclaim, being regarded as “exceptionally promising” by The Kansas City Star and “making things happen on stages … with an engaging voice and passion for creating good music” from Ink Magazine. In 2015, Keaton Conrad released his debut EP, Panic & Blame, which contained five original songs that were heavily inspired by the pop rock sound he grew up on. His first full-length album, Waves, followed in January 2017 which ranged in style from pop rock to hip-hop to ambient. Conrad’s newest single “(If I Told You to) Stay” is set to be released on July 20th, 2018. A lyric video will be coming out soon. Keaton Conrad is playing Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park as part of the Lenexa Outdoor Concert Series, September 16.

19 year old Kansas Native, Keaton Conrad records all of his own music in his home studio, mixing and mastering it all.

Keaton grew up in Olathe, Kansas (as did Calvin Arsenia, and Duncan Burnett). Keaton sang in High School Choir and performed in Olathe North West High School musicals.

At 10:30 we talk with Shy Boys on the verge of their national release, Bell House, on Polyvinyl Records. Shy Boys originally formed as a trio in 2012 with brothers Collin Rausch, Kyle Rausch, and roommate Konnor Ervin (of The ACB’s fame). The three shared a love for 1960s era pop rock and started writing their own music. Kyle Little and Ross Brown (of Fullbloods) joined to make Shy Boys a 5-piece. In 2014 Shy Boys released their self-titled debut on High Dive Records. Their single “Bully Fight” was featured on Spin.com. In June 2014 the band recorded and released two more singles. “Life Is Peachy,” was featured on Stereogum. On April 4th, 2018, it was announced that Shy Boys had signed to Polyvinyl. [Lead single from Tell Me How You Really Feel is the second studio album by Australian singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett. It was released on 18 May 2018 by Barnett’s Milk! Records, Mom + Pop Music, and Marathon Artists. The album was recorded in Melbourne with producer Burke Reid, who also worked on Barnett’s previous solo album, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit. Barnett was joined on the album by her live rhythm section of Bones Sloane (bass, backing vocals) and Dave Mudie (drums, backing vocals), as well as guitarist Dan Luscombe of The Drones. The album also features guest appearances from the Deal sisters, Kim and Kelley. In 2012 Barnett started her own label, Milk! Records, and released her first EP I’ve Got A Friend Called Emily Ferris to glowing reviews around Australia. From 2011 – 2013 Barnett was a member of Australian psych/country band Immigrant Union, a musical project founded by Brent DeBoer of The Dandy Warhols and Bob Harrow. Along with sharing vocal duties Barnett predominantly played slide guitar and features on their second studio album ‘Anyway’. DeBoer also played drums on her first EP ‘I’ve Got A Friend Called Emily Ferris’. Barnett received international critical acclaim in 2013 with her second EP How To Carve A Carrot Into A Rose. Barnett combined the 2 releases into The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas.]

3. Vacationer – “Being Here”

[The third full-length from Vacationer, Mindset is built on delicate melodies and crystalline rhythms that seem to alter the very texture of the world around you. Ornately composed but breezy in energy, Vacationer’s warm-hearted dream-pop perfectly mirrors frontman Ken Vasoli’s intentions in making the album. “The objective was to write songs that remind me how my brain needs to operate for my own wellbeing and happiness,” Vasoli says. “That’s where the title comes from—the record’s filled with all these reminders that put me in a good mindset for the day.” Despite its often-euphoric effect, Mindset began in frustration for Vasoli. After countless false starts on the follow-up to 2014’s Relief, the Philadelphia-based musician decided to completely upend his creative approach. While Vacationer’s previous albums came to life in close collaboration with fellow members Matthew Young and Grant Wheeler, Vasoli shifted his focus from songwriting to production and worked entirely on his own for months on end. During that time, he immersed himself in exploring the nuances of Ableton and analyzing the construction of beloved albums by artists like the Beach Boys, Barry White, and Curtis Mayfield.]

5. Miles Bonny – “It’s Your World”

[“It’s Your World” with lyrics & music by Brian Jackson is the title track of the double album by soul artist Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson, released in November 1976 on Arista Records. Recording sessions for the album took place in studio and live in July 1976 at St. Paul’s Mall in Boston, Massachusetts, Electric Lady Studios in New York City, and American Star Studios in Merrifield, Virginia. Scott-Heron and Jackson recorded the album with the former’s backing ensemble, The Midnight Band. It’s Your World was originally released on vinyl. Already a fan of Gil Scott and Brian Jackson, Miles was asked to learn “It’s your world” so he may cover it live at a Gil Scott-Heron tribute party in Cologne, Germany. The party never happened, but the song’s lyrics deeply impacted Miles. Upon moving to New Mexico shortly after, Miles recorded the lead vocal live alongside the cajon played by fellow explorer and off-grider Trance Conductor. The additional vocals, horns, percussion, and piano were recorded elsewhere in the neighborhood at Miles’ Mud Cabin Studio. Bass was layed by friend and fellow INnatesounds representative Dominique Sanders in Kansas City. Mixed and mastered by Miles Bonny in Northern New Mexico. [English artist, poet, vocalist, composer, and musician, Benjamin Sainte-Clémentine was born December 7, 1988, n London, England,. Clementine later moved to Paris, France becoming homeless as a teenager. There, his performances helped him to become a cult figure in the music and art scene. Moving back to London, he made his TV debut on the BBC programme Later With Jools Holland in 2013. A number of critics described him as becoming one of the great singer-songwriters of his generation and the future sound of London, whilst struggling to place his music in any one genre. Considered by The New York Times as one of the 28 geniuses who defined culture in 2016, Clementine’s compositions are musically incisive and attuned to the issues of life but also poetic, mixing revolt with love and melancholy, sophisticated lyricism with slang and shouts, and rhyming verse with prose monologues. He moved to popular art music, breaking free from traditional song structure, inventing his own dramatic and innovative musical territory. He is noticeably seen topless and barefoot onstage, dressed entirely in black or dark grey, with a long, wool trench coat. Clementine debut album At Least for Now won the 2015 Mercury Prize but fared better across mainland Europe. At the end of 2015, Clementine was included in The Guardian’s New Year’s honours list to celebrate heroes of 2015. Debrett’s and the London Evening Standard named him one of the most influential people in Britain. ]

12. Patsy Cline – “Sweet Dreams”

[Patsy Cline was born Virginia Patterson Hensley on September 8, 1932. She died in a plane crash on March 5, 1963. She was an American country music singer and part of the Nashville sound during the late 1950s and early 1960s. She successfully “crossed over” to pop music and was one of the most influential, successful, and acclaimed vocalists of the 20th century. She died at age 30 in the crash of a private airplane. Cline was known for her rich tone, emotionally expressive and bold contralto voice, and her role as a country music pioneer. She helped to pave the way for women as headline performers in the genre, along with Kitty Wells. She overcame poverty, a devastating automobile accident, and significant professional obstacles, and she has been cited as an inspiration by Reba McEntire, LeAnn Rimes, and other singers in diverse styles. Books, movies, documentaries, and stage plays document her life and career. Her hits began in 1957 with Donn Hecht’s and Alan Block’s “Walkin’ After Midnight,” Hank Cochran’s and Harlan Howard’s “I Fall to Pieces,” Hank Cochran’s “She’s Got You,” and Willie Nelson’s “Crazy,” and ended in 1963 with Don Gibson’s “Sweet Dreams.” Millions of her records have sold since her death. She won awards and accolades, causing many to view her as an icon at the level of Jim Reeves, Johnny Cash, and Elvis Presley. She became the first female solo artist inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1973, ten years after her death. In 1999, she was voted number 11 on VH1’s special The 100 Greatest Women in Rock and Roll. In 2002, she was voted Number One on Country Music Television’s The 40 Greatest Women of Country Music, and she was ranked 46th in the “100 Greatest Singers of All Time” issue of Rolling Stone magazine. Her 1973 Country Music Hall of Fame plaque reads: “Her heritage of timeless recordings is testimony to her artistic capacity.”]

[In early 1963, Patsy Cline was recording songs for her next album, Faded Love, which was set for release in late March, 1963. She recorded “Sweet Dreams” for the album on February 5. However, on March 5, Cline died in a plane crash on the way home from a benefit in Kansas City, Kansas for the family of Cactus Jack Call, a disc jockey who was killed in an automobile accident so, therefore, the album was never released. The songs were later compiled for the release Patsy Cline the Last Sessions in 1988. Instead, Decca Records issued a double album, entitled The Patsy Cline Story, in the summer of 1963.]

[In 1963, “Sweet Dreams” was released to the public and became a big Crossover hit, making it to #5 on the Country charts and to #44 on the pop music charts. It also peaked on the U.S. Adult Contemporary charts at #15. This song was followed by two other songs that were planned for release on Cline’s upcoming album: “Leavin’ on Your Mind” and “Faded Love”, which both became hits. It was said that Cline did not like the use of the violins that producer Owen Bradley was bringing into the song, because she feared she was becoming too “pop” for her Country audience (All references in this section are either from Patsy by Margaret Jones or Honky Tonk Angel by Ellis Nassour). But upon hearing the song after the playbacks the night she recorded it, she supposedly held a record up of her first record and “Sweet Dreams” and proclaimed “Well, here it is: The first and the last.” (Source: Loretta Lynn: Coal Miner’s Daughter (1976) This quote came from the video called Remembering Patsy, and was quoted by Jan Howard whose husband at the time was Harlan Howard. In 1985, the song became the title tune of a Patsy Cline biopic starring Jessica Lange as Cline. Cline’s hit version of “Sweet Dreams” was included on the film’s soundtrack, along with “Crazy,” “She’s Got You,” and many of her other songs.]

Tomorrow night at at the Kansas City Library The Plaza Branch Tim will present: A Look Back at Rockville: Great Moments in Kansas City Concerts, as part of the 2018 Adult Summer Reading Program Rock & Read. One of the concerts he will discuss is patsy Cline’s last performance of her career in Kansas City, Kansas.

Patsy Cline at Memorial Hall – March 3, 1963

We just heard Patsy Cline singing a song she record on February 5, 1963. Nearly one month later, on March 3, 1963, Cline performed a benefit at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall, Kansas City, Kansas, for the family of disc jockey “Cactus” Jack Call. He had died in an automobile crash a little over a month earlier. Call was a longtime DJ for KCKN, but had switched to KCMK a week before his death on January 25, 1963, at the age of 39. Also performing in the show were George Jones, George Riddle and The Jones Boys, Billy Walker, Dottie West, Wilma Lee and Stoney Cooper, George McCormick, the Clinch Mountain Boys as well as Cowboy Copas and Hawkshaw Hawkins.

Cline, ill with the flu, gave three performances, at 2 p.m. and 5:15 p.m., with an 8 p.m. show added due to popular demand. All the shows were standing-room only. For the 2 p.m. show, she wore a sky-blue tulle-laden dress; for the 5:15 show a red shocker; and for the closing show at 8 p.m., Cline wore white chiffon, closing the evening to a thunderous ovation. Her final song was the last she had recorded the previous month, “I’ll Sail My Ship Alone.”

Cline, who had spent the night at the Town House Motor Hotel, was unable to fly out the day after the concert because Fairfax Airport was fogged in. West asked Patsy to ride in the car with her and husband, Bill, back to Nashville, a 16-hour drive, but Cline refused, saying, “Don’t worry about me, Hoss. When it’s my time to go, it’s my time.” On March 5, she called her mother from the motel and checked out at 12:30 p.m., going the short distance to the airport and boarding a Piper PA-24 Comanche plane, aircraft registration number N-7000P. The plane stopped once in Missouri to refuel and subsequently landed at Dyersburg Municipal Airport in Dyersburg, Tennessee at 5 p.m.

Hughes was the pilot, but was not trained in instrument flying. Hawkins had accepted Billy Walker’s place after Walker left on a commercial flight to take care of a stricken family member. The Dyersburg, Tennessee, airfield manager suggested that they stay the night because of high winds and inclement weather, offering them free rooms and meals. But Hughes responded, “I’ve already come this far. We’ll be there before you know it.” The plane took off at 6:07 p.m. Hughes’ flight instructor, Elmo Merriwether, had also trained Jim Reeves, whose plane crashed the following year. Neither pilot was instrument-rated, and both attempted to navigate by visual flight rules (VFR), which proved impossible in the driving rain faced by both flights.

Cline’s flight crashed in heavy weather on the evening of March 5, 1963. Her recovered wristwatch had stopped at 6:20 p.m. The plane was found some 90 miles from its Nashville destination, in a forest outside Camden, Tennessee. Forensic examination concluded that everyone aboard had been killed instantly. Until the wreckage was discovered the following dawn and reported on the radio, friends and family had not given up hope. Endless calls tied up the local telephone exchanges to such a degree that other emergency calls had trouble getting through. The lights at the destination Cornelia Fort Airpark were kept on throughout the night, as reports of the missing plane were broadcast on radio and TV.

Early in the morning, Roger Miller and a friend went searching for survivors: “As fast as I could, I ran through the woods screaming their names–through the brush and the trees–and I came up over this little rise, oh, my God, there they were. It was ghastly. The plane had crashed nose down.” Shortly after the bodies were removed, looters scavenged the area. Some of the items which were recovered were eventually donated to The Country Music Hall of Fame. Among them were Cline’s wristwatch, Confederate flag cigarette lighter, studded belt and three pairs of gold lamé slippers. Cline’s fee and her attire from the last performance were never recovered.

Per her wishes, Cline’s body was brought home for her memorial service, which thousands attended. She was buried at Shenandoah Memorial Park in her hometown of Winchester, Virginia. Her grave is marked with a bronze plaque, which reads: “Virginia H. Dick (Patsy Cline) is noted under her name. ‘Death Cannot Kill What Never Dies: Love’.” With the help of Loretta Lynn and Dottie West, a bell tower was erected at the cemetery in her memory, which plays hymns daily at 6:00 p.m., the hour of her death. Another memorial marks the exact place off Fire Tower Road in Fatty Bottom, Tennessee, where the plane crashed in the still-remote forest.

13. Michael Jackson – “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin'”
from: Thriller / Epic/ November 30, 1982
[6th studio album by American singer Michael Jackson, released on November 30, 1982, in the United States by Epic Records and internationally by CBS Records. It explores genres similar to Jackson’s previous album, Off the Wall, including pop, post-disco, rock and funk. Recording sessions took place from April to November 1982 at Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angeles, with a production budget of $750,000. Quincy Jones produced the album and Jackson wrote four of its nine songs. In just over a year, Thriller became—and currently remains—the world’s best-selling album, with estimated sales of 66 million copies. It is the best-selling album in the United States and as of 2017 is the only album to reach 30x multi-platinum, with U.S. shipments of 33 million album-equivalent units certified. The album won a record-breaking eight Grammy Awards in 1984, including Album of the Year. It produced seven singles—”The Girl Is Mine”, “Billie Jean”, “Beat It”, “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin'”, “Human Nature”, “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)”, and “Thriller”—all of which reached the top 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Thriller broke racial barriers in pop music, enabling Jackson’s appearances on MTV and meeting with President Ronald Reagan at the White House. The album was one of the first to use music videos as successful promotional tools, and the videos for the songs “Thriller”, “Billie Jean”, and “Beat It” all received regular rotation on MTV. In 2001, a special edition reissue was released, which contains additional audio interviews, demo recordings and the song “Someone in the Dark”, a Grammy-winning track from the E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial storybook. In 2008, Thriller was reissued again as Thriller 25, containing remixes with contemporary artists, previously unreleased songs, and a DVD with three music videos and Jackson’s performance of “Billie Jean” from the 1983 television special Motown 25. In the same year, the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame along with Off the Wall. In 2012, Slant Magazine named Thriller the best album of the 1980s”. In 2003, Rolling Stone placed the album at number 20 on their list of “The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time”. The album was listed by the National Association of Recording Merchandisers at number three on its “Definitive 200” album list. Thriller was also included in the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry of culturally significant recordings, and the Thriller music video was included in the National Film Preservation Board’s National Film Registry of “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant films”.]

The Jacksons at Arrowhead Stadium – July 6, 7, and 8, 1984

The Victory Tour traveled the United States and Canada with Michael Jackson and The Jacksons between July and December 1984. It was the only tour with all six Jackson brothers (even though Jackie was injured for most of the tour). The group performed 55 concerts to an audience of approximately 2 million. Most came to see Michael, whose album Thriller had been dominating the popular music world at the time. Many consider it to be his Thriller tour, with most of the songs on the set list coming off of his Off the Wall album and from the Thriller album. The tour reportedly grossed approximately $75 million (US $181,608,277.19 in 2018 dollars) and set a new record for the highest grossing tour. It showcased Michael’s single glove, black sequined jacket and moonwalk.

Despite its focus on Michael, it was named after the newly released Jacksons’ album Victory although none of the album’s songs were performed. Marlon confirmed[citation needed] this was because Michael refused to rehearse or perform them; in fact, he had only reluctantly joined his brothers, who needed the income while he himself did not. On the tour, tensions between Michael and his brothers increased to the point that he announced at the final show that it would be the last time they would perform together, ending plans for a European and Australian leg of the tour in the spring and summer of 1985.

The Jacksons did make money from the tour, along with promoter Don King. Michael donated his share to several charities as he had promised before it, but the rancor between Michael and his brothers had a deep and lasting effect on the Jacksons as a family, alienating him from them for most of his later life and it effectively ended the Jacksons as a performing group. They made one more album (2300 Jackson Street which was released in 1989) but aside from the concert celebrating Michael’s 30 years as a solo artist in 2001, they never toured again during Michael’s lifetime.

The tour was a financial disaster for promoter Chuck Sullivan, who along with his father Billy was eventually forced to sell the New England Patriots football team they owned, along with Foxboro Stadium, the team’s home field, as a result of the losses he incurred.

The tour sold what was then a record number of tickets despite the high price. The opening shows were widely covered in the national media and sold out. “Anybody who sees this show will be a better person for years to come”, King told the media before the first date in Kansas City. “Michael Jackson has transcended all earthly bounds. Every race, color and creed is waiting for this tour.”

The Jacksons and Don King had made money even though Sullivan had not, and near the end of the tour they began making plans for a European leg. When word reached Michael, he let them know through his representatives that he would not be taking part. At the rain-soaked tour finale in Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium, after six sold-out shows, Michael announced at the end of the show, to his brothers’ shocked expressions, that this would be the last time they all performed together. The plans to go to Europe were ended.

The set list included songs from the Jackson’s albums Destiny and Triumph. Despite the name of the tour, the Victory album was not represented. There were also songs on the list from Jermaine’s and Michael’s solo careers. Songs from Michael’s albums Off the Wall and Thriller were both represented. The set list did not include “Thriller” itself because Michael did not like the way the song sounded live (it was later performed regularly during Michael’s solo tours).

The Beatles at Kansas City Municipal Stadium – September 17, 1964

The Beatles played for 31 minutes in Kansas City. The 20,280 tickets sold here tied Vancouver, British Columbia, for the second highest attendance for a single performance on the tour.

Charles O. Finley, owner of the Kansas City Athletics baseball team convinced The Beatles to add Kansas City to their tour, flying here on what was suppose to be their day off.

The Beatles spoke at a pre-concert news conference at the Hotel Muehlebach.

There were two Beatles visits to the U.S. in 1964. The first began with their famous Feb. 9 – “Ed Sullivan Show” appearance, watched by 73 million. They also played concerts in Washington, D.C., and New York, then did another Sullivan show from Miami Beach, Fla. By the time the third Sullivan bit, this one taped, ran Feb. 23, Thea Beatles were back in England. When The Beatles came back to the U.S. on Aug. 19 that year, their film “A Hard Day’s Night” had just been released theaters, and the title song went gold.

The 2nd tour was 33 days in 24 U.S. & Canadian cities.

The Kansas City Star reported that The Beatles “had not even left its first venue, San Francisco, before Charlie O. Finley contacted band manager Brian Epstein to see if a KC stop could be carved out of one of the eight off days. He offered $50,000. To put that in perspective, Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland were drawing $10,000 to $15,000 for a show, and a ’64 Beatles concert was running from $20,000 to $40,000.”

The band wasn’t excited about it. In “The Beatles Anthology, ” McCartney recalled: “Our days off were sacred. If you look at our 1964 timetable you can see why. I didn’t realise until recently that we used to have a whole year of work, and then get something like 23rd November off – and then have to judge a beauty competition that day. So, by the time we got to Kansas City, we probably needed a day off. I can’t actually remember falling out with Brian about him wanting us to work on a day off, we’d talk to each other rather than fall out.”

Then Finley wired Los Angeles, where the group played at the Hollywood Bowl, to double his bid. No, thanks, he was told again.

Charles O. Finley made a third offer: $150,000, at the time it was the all-time record cost for a single performance. In today’s dollars it would be $1.1 million.

The large photo in the Kansas City Times captured girls and boys excitedly waving their arms on the field, under a headline that continued the sense of a natural disaster averted: Police Hold Tide of Beatlemania.

The opening number was added as a concession to Finley: The Beatles’ version of “Kansas City/Hey-Hey-Hey.” It was included the next month when they cut their next album, “Beatles for Sale.” The Beatles played “Twist and Shout.”

The set list included: “You Can’t Do That”; “All My Loving”; “She Loves You, Yeah, Yeah! Yeah!”; “Things We Said Today”; “Roll Over Beethoven”; “Can’t Buy Me Love”; “If I Fell”; “I Wanna Hold Your Hand”; “Boys”; “A Hard Day’s Night” and “Long Tall Sally.”

14. The Beatles – “You Can’t Do That”

[A Hard Day’s Night is the third studio album by the English rock band the Beatles, released on 10 July 1964, with side one containing songs from the soundtrack to their film of the same name. The American version of the album was released two weeks earlier, on 26 June 1964 by United Artists Records, with a different track listing. In contrast to their first two albums, all 13 tracks on A Hard Day’s Night were written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney showcasing the development of their songwriting talents. The album includes the title track, with its distinct opening chord, and the previously released “Can’t Buy Me Love”, both transatlantic number-one singles for the band. The title of the album was the accidental creation of drummer Ringo Starr. According to Lennon in a 1980 interview with Playboy magazine: “I was going home in the car and Dick Lester [director of the movie] suggested the title, ‘Hard Day’s Night’ from something Ringo had said. I had used it in In His Own Write, but it was an off-the-cuff remark by Ringo. You know, one of those malapropisms. A Ringo-ism, where he said it not to be funny … just said it. So Dick Lester said, ‘We are going to use that title.’]

Legendary Kansas City Singer Songwriter – Howard Eisberg records and performs under the name Howard Iceberg. He is one of the most prolific and poetic songwriters of the Kansas City music scene. He has written hundreds, possibly thousands of songs. Howard has done all of this while also leading a distinguished career as an immigration attorney, and he has donated much of his time and music to valuable projects that serve our community. Howard Iceberg began performing in coffeehouses in the late 1980s with fellow area independent songwriters Scott Hrabko and Iris DeMent. Over the past three decades he has released countless CDs, and recorded multiple collections of songs. In 2011, Howard Iceberg & The Titanics released a seven CD, box set, of 106 new songs, all instant classics. In 2014 he released a collection called Spring 2014, on his birthday May 9, 2015 he released, Smooth Sailing which included 13 new songs. In September 2016 Howard released a 2 CD set of 26 new tracks called, “Kansas City Songs. Ear;lier this year Howard released Netherlands his collaboration with Rich Hill and other area Jazz musicians.

Pranav Nanda is a 2017 Teach for America Corps Member, serving as a teacher and leader in Kansas City. In his first year at Teach For America, he taught Humanities at DeLaSalle Charter School, an alternative high school serving the Kansas City Urban Corps. This summer, Pranav has had the opportunity to work in the Kansas City’s Mayor’s office through the Urban Leaders Fellowship. Pranav is currently pursuing his Master’s in Education at the University of Missouri in St. Louis & plans on going to Law School after his Teach For America service. Prior to joining Teach For America, Pranav attending George Washington University in Washington DC, receiving a Bachelor’s in Art in International Affairs and minored in Sociocultural Anthropology. While attending GW, Pranav had the opportunity to intern in the White House in the Office of Presidential Correspondence, at the Department of Education in the Office of Post-Secondary Education, and in many leadership positions on campus.

Like Mothers Against Drunk Driving, created to reduce drunk driving, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America was created to demand action from legislators, state & federal; companies; & educational institutions to establish common-sense gun reforms.

WHO WE ARE

Moms Demand Action was founded by stay-at-home mom Shannon Watts on December 15, 2012, in response to the devastating shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The organization quickly flourished into a leading force for gun violence prevention, with chapters in all 50 states and a powerful grassroots network of moms that has successfully effected change at the local, state and national level. We are facing a public health crisis: seven American children or teens are shot and killed every day.

Shapiro Brothers

Chad Brothers is a Kansas City based singer-songwriter and guitarist who has played music for over 25 years. His dynamic approach to guitar sets him among the best this town has to offer. He’s actively involved in several projects around town including Old Sound, Shapiro Brothers, Supermassive Black Holes, The Butter Band, and he is Mikal Shapiro’s lead guitarist in her band The Musical. In addition, he and Howard Iceberg have now formed a duo called The Hermanos Brothers. Chad was born and raised in Winfield, KS, home of the Walnut Valley Festival and National Flatpicking Championships, and finds himself comfortably at home among a wide range of musical genres including bluegrass, folk, blues, country and rock.

Mikal Shapiro is a Kansas City songwriter whose musical influences span popular songs, psych rock, lounge, classic country and old time spirituals. She has toured extensively across the United States and has recorded five critically acclaimed albums. Kansas City Star critic Tim Finn declared her album “The Musical” to be one of his top five releases of 2015. A third generation storyteller, she draws inspiration from her travels, love life, and the state of the Union. Mikal Shapiro released her latest solo album, The Musical II, on May 26.

[A soul/funk song written and composed by Kenneth Gamble, Leon Huff, & Anthony Jackson; recorded by Philadelphia soul group The O’Jays for the album Ship Ahoy. Produced by Gamble & Huff for Philadelphia International Records, “For the Love of Money” was issued as a single in late 1973 (see 1973 in music), with “People Keep Tellin’ Me” as its b-side. The single peaked at number three on the U.S. Billboard R&B chart, and at No. 9 on Billboard’s Pop Singles chart in spring 1974. Though the album version of the song was over seven minutes long, it received substantial radio airplay. The song’s title comes from a well-known Bible verse, 1 Timothy 6:10: “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” (This translation is from the King James Version of the Bible.) The O’Jays are an American R&B group from Canton, Ohio, formed in 1958 and originally consisting of Eddie Levert (born June 16, 1942), Walter Williams (born August 25, 1943), William Powell (Jan. 20, 1942 – May 26, 1977), Bobby Massey and Bill Isles. The O’Jays made their first chart appearance with “Lonely Drifter” in 1963, but reached their greatest level of success once Gamble & Huff, a team of producers and songwriters, signed them to their Philadelphia International label in 1972. With Gamble & Huff, the O’Jays (now a trio after the departure of Isles and Massey) emerged at the forefront of Philadelphia soul with “Back Stabbers” (1972), and topped the Billboard Hot 100 the following year with “Love Train”. Numerous other hits followed through the 1970s and into the 1980s and 1990s, and The O’Jays were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004, and The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.]

Red Kate is proud to announce the release of a new single on local label, Too Much Rock. As with all records in the Singles Series, this old-school, 45 rpm ripper contains one original track and one cover selected by the label. Side A, Iraqi Girl, is a grinding statement on American foreign policy, while side B follows suit with a cover of the TSOL song, American Zone. This frank indictment of how we treat those sent off to impose that foreign policy is as relevant today as it was in 1984. American Zone marks the first recording with the band’s newest member, rhythm guitarist Shaun Hamontree, whose contribution to the effort also includes his arresting, if not disturbing, cover art invoking the devastating reality of a war widow’s scrap book.

Both tracks were recorded at Weights and Measures Soundlab where engineer Duane Trower and producer L. Ron Drunkard have perfected Red Kate’s sonic signature. And like all 7” releases by the band, the covers were printed locally by the good folks of the Allied Printing and Trades Local 16C at Callender Printing in Kansas City, KS.

Red Kate will celebrate the release of the new record Friday, February 23 at Davey’s Uptown with Reacharounds from Springfield, MO, and up and comers, Arson Class and Vidco Kult. An all ages show is scheduled for Saturday, March 3 at Mills Record Company with the brand new Martian Martian Martian.

This limited edition release of 500 records includes 100 copies on clear vinyl with an alternate cover (collect away, nerds!). Distributed by Black Site, they will be available February 24 at record stores throughout the region and online at black-site.org/red-kate and redkate.bandcamp.com.

2. AHI – “Alive Again”

[Debut album from Brampton, Ontario, Canada indie-soul/alt-folk songwriter AHI (pronounced “eye”). From humble beginnings in Brampton, Ontario, AHI independently toured over 100,000 miles, through the vast woodlands of Canada and the neon lights of Nashville, to the Guggenheim Museum in New York, and eventually beyond the Atlantic to the brick lanes of London. Along the way, he has recorded with leading acoustic sessions across the UK and Europe, but none has been more viewed than a simple home video of his stunning rendition of Bob Marley’s ‘No Woman No Cry’, filmed in a London alleyway and accompanied by the sweet harmonies of his three-year-old daughter. The video caught the attention of the Marley family who featured it on the official BobMarley.com website and sent AHI a personalized note from Mrs. Rita Marley herself – an unparalleled experience for an artist who cites Bob Marley as his greatest musical inspiration. Soon after, AHI returned to find his Indie Soul EP (2014) was chosen one of CBC Radio One’s top 10 records of the year, and he has since been recognized and awarded by Folk Alliance International, Nashville Songwriters Association International, the Songwriters Association of Canada, and the Canada Council for the Arts, among others. For his debut full-length We Made It Through The Wreckage (2017), AHI has collaborated with CMA winning producer Eric Masse (Miranda Lambert) to create what Masse has called an entirely “new genre”, blending folk, soul and rock, and topping it off with a vocal performance to be expected from a seasoned powerhouse rather than an indie debut..]

3. Ruthie Foster – “What Are You Listening To?”

[Ruthie Cecelia Foster (born February 10, 1964) is an American singer-songwriter of blues and folk music. She mixes a wide palette of American song forms, from gospel and blues to jazz, folk and soul. She has often been compared to Bonnie Raitt and Aretha Franklin. Foster is from Gause, Texas and comes from a family of gospel singers. At the age of fourteen, Ruthie was a soloist in her hometown choir, and was certain that her future would revolve around music. After high school, Ruthie moved to Waco, Texas to attend community college, where her studies concentrated in music and audio engineering. She began fronting a blues band, learning how to command a stage in the bars of Texas. Hoping to travel and gain a wider world perspective, Foster joined the Navy, and soon her musical talents soon had her singing in the naval band Pride, that played pop and funk hits at recruitment drives in the southeastern United States. Following her tour of duty, Ruthie headed to New York City where she became a regular performer at various local folk venues. Atlantic Records got wind of Foster’s talent and offered her a recording deal, with the intent of cultivating her as a budding pop star, but Foster wasn’t interested in a pop career, preferring instead to explore the various strains of American roots music that had informed her childhood. When her mother fell ill in 1993, Foster left New York and her recording deal and returned to Texas to be with her family. She began working as a camera operator and production assistant at a television station in College Station, Texas while she cared for her mother, who passed in 1996. A year later in 1997, Foster self-released the album Full Circle, the success of which paved the way to a long relationship with the record label Blue Corn Music. Blue Corn released the follow up album Crossover in 1999, Runaway Soul in 2002, and Stages (featuring a series of live tracks) in 2004. Stages marked a turning point in Foster’s career, as the experience of a Ruthie Foster live show was able to be experienced by a wide audience. Foster’s next release was Heal Yourself in 2006, followed by the studio album The Phenomenal Ruthie Foster in 2008 (produced by Papa Mali), and The Truth According to Ruthie Foster (produced by Grammy-winning producer Chris Goldsmith), recorded at Ardent Studios in Memphis, in 2009, all released by Blue Corn Music. The Truth According to Ruthie Foster earned Ruthie a Grammy Award Nomination for Best Contemporary Blues Album. A second album of Foster’s live performances, Live At Antone’s (CD and DVD), was released in 2011. In 2012, Ruthie and Blue Corn released the studio album Let It Burn, which featured special guests The Blind Boys of Alabama, William Bell and the rhythm section of The Funky Meters, and was produced by Grammy-award winner John Chelew. Let It Burn earned Foster a second Grammy Nomination, this time for Best Blues Album, and was the vehicle for numerous Blues Music Awards won by Foster. Her most recent album, Joy Comes Back, was released by Blue Corn Music in 2017.]

Formed in 2010, Jeff Freling and Erin McGrane are Victor & Penny. The duo were honored to represent Kansas City at a New York City press event as part the America’s Creative Crossroads campaign, “Paris of the Plains Goes to NY.” Victor & Penny have also performed at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts Inaugural New Year’s, the Missouri Governor’s 2016 EDC Awards Luncheon, KC Union Station’s Centennial Celebration, and KC Mayor, Sly James’ 2015 State of the City Address.V&P are a four-time Official Showcase Artists for Folk Alliance International Conference, and have made over 1,000 personal appearances and traveled more than 200,000 miles in the last five years. In 2016 V&P released their 4th album, ‘Electricity.’ After recently getting married, Victor & Penny recently released their first ever vinyl 7-inch vinyl single though EAT.HEAR.RECORDS. Last night Victor & Penny and the Loose Change Orchestra joined famed composer & musician David Amram for David Amram: A Musical Life, interviewed by Chuck Haddix, at The Olathe Public Library.

Victor & Penny are a four-time Official Showcase Artists for Folk Alliance International Conference.

Formally trained at Berklee School of Music (Boston) and the Conservatory of Music (Kansas City), Mr. Freling participated in the international program, The Acoustic Guitar Project in 2014 and is an accomplished composer, arranger, and outstanding instrumentalist.

Erin McGrane is an ArtsKC Fund Inspiration Grant recipient and a Mid-America Arts Alliance Professional Development Grant recipient as well as a fellow of the ArtistINC program for which she currently serves as a peer facilitator and a workshop presenter. The duo was married in May 2017 and recently returned from an extended overseas honeymoon in Spain and Portugal (Oct. 2017).

Celebrating the simultaneous launch of Victor & Penny were the first release on the new label, EAT. HEAR. RECORDS. The 7” 45rpm vinyl record by Victor & Penny offers a new sonic landscape from the band as they have expanded to include drums with local jazz drummer, Brian Steever. Mr. Steever will join the band for a portion of the special concert.

10:27 – Interview with Erin McGrane and Jeff Freling

Formed in 2010, Jeff Freling and Erin McGrane are Victor & Penny, a Swing-infused folk-jazz rooted in the riff-driven Kansas City style, delivered with class, joy, and soaring musical improvisation.. The duo have released four full length albums and most recently a 7″ vinyl single. Kansas City is their home.

Victor & Penny were named “Best Folk Ensemble 2015” by the PITCH; “Standout Concert of the Year” by the Joplin Globe; and are two-time Folk Alliance International official showcase artists. V&P and the LCO feature tight vocal harmonies, dazzling guitar work, red-hot horns and a fiery ukulele. This corset-tight quintet brings a modern Kansas City voice to their original tunes and prohibition era jazz with sterling musicianship. V&P and the LCO impress and delight with charm and hot licks and they are an “absolute rollicking blast.”

The group released a new full-length CD, “Electricity” (March 2016) which debuted on the Folk Radio DJ charts at #12 with the #3 song. “Electricity” crackles and sparks with joy and regret; truths and dares; love and love gone wrong all set to a score of vibrant, rhythmic swing and virtuosic musicianship. Electricity is the culmination of 160,000 miles, 5 years and nearly 1,000 performances and is a testament to the incomparable vivacity of Victor & Penny’s live show, with newly added sophistication and rich instrumentation.

Jeff Freling played for many years in the band for Blue Man Group, in Chicago. Erin McGrane starred on screen with George Clooney in the film “Up in the Air.” She was also in the cabaret troupe Alacartoona. Ms. McGrane is an ArtsKC Fund Inspiration Grant recipient and a Mid-America Arts Alliance Professional Development Grant recipient as well as a fellow of the ArtistINC program for which she currently serves as a peer facilitator and a workshop presenter.

The Loose Change Orchestra:

Classically trained reeds virtuoso James Isaac fronts his own highly respected jazz quartet, The James Isaac Group and is a member of the People’s Liberation Big Band.

Bassist Rick Willoughby attended the UMKC Conservatory of Music and is a member of Quixotic, The Snow Globes and the Barclay Martin Ensemble.

Multi-instrumentalists Kyle Dahlquist (The Naughty Pines, Hardship Letters) rounds out the lineup with trombone, accordion and vocals.

7. The Accidentals – “Odyssey”

[The Accidentals are an American musical band, formed in Traverse City, Michigan, in 2012, by Savannah Buist and Katie Larson, joined by percussionist Michael Dause in 2014. The group features an eclectic blend of indie folk, pop, jazz, bluegrass, rock, classical, and other genres, utilizing a wide variety of instruments that reflect the group’s orchestral roots and electronic influences. As of 2017 they had released three full length albums and one EP. In March 2015, they performed at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas, which featured some 2,200 acts, and were named as one of the top breakout groups by Billboard staff. In 2015, the group contracted with Marshall Crenshaw and Stewart Lerman to produce four new albums, but upon the contract becoming renegotiable the following year, the band opted to continue releasing music independently. On January 9, 2017, the band announced that they were signed to Sony Masterworks via a feature in Local Spins, the album will feature multiple guest performers, including Jack White bassist Dominic John Davis, Jenny Conlee of The Decemberists, Keller Williams, Kaki King, Lily & Madeleine, and Carbon Leaf. Buist described Masterworks as “a family that gets us and our music, and wants to support that authentically”, while Larson added, “We feel like we can be truly who we are and they appreciate the honesty.” Masterworks is primarily a classical and jazz label, having previously signed such names as Yo-Yo Ma, Sonny Rollins, and Yanni, though it has recently expanded its reach with its signing of indie folk duo Tall Heights and acknowledgement of bluegrass on The Goat Rodeo Sessions. On August 18, 2017, the Accidentals embarked on tour throughout the United States and Canada to promote the album. The album received positive reviews from critics, including PopMatters, AllMusic, and Local Spins.]

9. Yirrmal – “Blackfella Whitefella”

[New gen Indigenous Australian artist Yirrmal Marika, from North-East Arnhem Land, has made a refreshing entrance into the music scene. Inspired by his Grandfather, Dr Yunupingu, former lead singer of Yothu Yindi, he fuses tradition and contemporary with class and passion. Yirrmal is an inspiring songwriter and guitarist with a beautiful voice, singing songs about his homeland and culture with feeling and depth beyond his years. Yirrmal is related to Dr G Yunupingu on his mother’s side, and his father, Witiyana Marika, was a singer and dancer in Yothu Yindi. He has extensive knowledge of traditional Yolngu “Manikay” songs, and he is also an excellent dancer and didgeridoo “yidaki” player. He is connecting a newfound sound and engaging the hearts of all who are lucky enough to hear him. Yirrmal has lived in Geelong for the past six years where he has been continuing his education and participating in the Marrma’ Rom Two Worlds Leadership Program. He aims to set an example for Indigenous youth and to be a strong, positive role-model for the next generation. Over the past 3 years Yirrmal has worked with song-writing mentors Neil Murray, Shane Howard and released his debut EP ‘Youngblood’ in November 2016. The release was followed by a short regional Victorian and interstate tour. Yirrmal is looking forward to working with more mentors in 2017 to write material for his first full-length album recording in 2018. Career highlights include performing at the Northern Territory NAIDOC Week concert and NAIDOC Ball, the National Indigenous Music Awards, Garma Festivals, New Zealand Music Festival and Singapore and Taipei Music Festivals with the Black Arm Band, Nannup Music Festival, BluesFest Touring Shows and Bluesfest Music Festival, Woodford Festival, the Port Fairy Folk Festival and he was the recipient of the 2017 Maton Class Act for Emerging Talent award. 10. John Oates – “Arkansas”

[John Oates is one half of the best-selling duo of all time, Hall & Oates, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Songwriters Hall of Fame. His new album “Arkansas” which blends delta blues, ragtime and roots influences. John Oates was born in New York City, his family moved to a small town outside of Philadelphia, PA in the early 1950s – a move that would change the course of his life. John Oates met Daryl Hall while attending Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. The two began collaborating and playing music together, marking the beginning of their historic partnership. Since their formation in the early 70s, Daryl Hall & John Oates have gone on to record 21 albums, which have sold over 80 million units, making them the most successful duo in rock history. They have scored 10 #1 records, over 20 Top-40 hits, and have toured the world for decades. Their involvement in the original Live Aid concert and the groundbreaking We Are The World charity recording have further established them as legendary artists, who have personally and through their music, stood the test of time. in 2005 they were inducted into the American Songwriters Hall of Fame. In May of 2008, they were also presented the prestigious BMI Icon Award for their outstanding career achievement in songwriting. In April 2014, Hall & Oates was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Since embarking on a long awaited solo career in 1999, John has recorded five solo albums: Phunk Shui, 100 Miles of Life, Mississippi Mile, a live album called The Bluesville Sessions, and Good Road To Follow, (which featured collaborations with Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic, Vince Gill, Nathan Chapman, Jim Lauderdale, and Jerry Douglas). Arkansas was originally inspired by the music and legacy of the legendary Mississippi John Hurt, the project grew to encompass other artists and styles that represent the dawn of American popular music. Stylistically diverse and eclectic, the collection features a full band that was put together specially to bring the full range and flavors of classic American musical styles to life. Oates crafted a number of original songs for the Arkansas album; selections actually inspired by the process of digging deep into the sonic soil of authentic roots music. “I really believe this is the most vital and satisfying solo project I’ve ever embarked upon,” Oates says of Arkansas. “Of all the music I have ever made with anyone, for me this album sits right up there.” John resides in Nashville, Tennessee with his wife Aimee.]

11. Black Umfolosi – “Umhlaba”

[From Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, this ensemble has been performing and recording music form 30 Years. Known as Zimbabwe’s greatest ambassadors, performing music inspired by the traditional song and dance of their native southern Africa. [Indie-roots trailblazers, The Mammals, bring politically-infused string-band fervor to their re-emergent new album and US tour in 2018. In an era of disconnect, The Mammals enjoy re-connecting generations thru their truth-telling lyrics, off-the-cuff storytelling and euphoric instrumentals, and by organizing a hometown community folk festival (The Hoot) near Woodstock, NY. Now a maintenance man at a Catholic grade school by day, Charlie has kept his musical flame glowing largely through acoustic solo performances around Chicago for the past ten years. Charlie Baran is a true virtuoso. No one sees him perform without recognizing the presence of a true master – an heir to a rich tradition of Honduran music, as well as a guitar slinging showman and a gifted songwriter whose skill transcends all genres. But throughout most of his career he has existed in the shadows – until the formation of Radio Free Honduras. Radio Free Honduras is a diverse collective of Chicago musicians, all united under one goal – supporting the artistry of Charlie Baran and bringing this tremendous talent into the spotlight where it belongs. 14. Rosie & The Riveters – “Let ‘Em Talk”

[Saskatoon, Saskatchewan trio formed by Alexis Normand, Farideh Olsen, and Allyson Reigh. Rosie & the Riveters never planned to get political. But opening a newspaper or watching the news these days made it impossible to see the status of women around the world and stay silent. The result is Ms. Behave – a collection of gritty, sultry, vintage-inspired folk anthems that paint a portrait of a woman’s voice in a man’s world. The band wrote most of the album in a cabin nestled in the woods in the dead of the Canadian winter. A quick read through song titles like “Gotta Get Paid”, “Let’em Talk” and “I Wanna Be King” gives an idea of what they have to say. While their single, “Ms. Behave” lays down a Bill-Withers-inspired groove and rejects the policing of women’s behavior, “I Believe You” sprung from the outrage and sorrow they felt after hearing the recent avalanche of stories of sexual assault. [born in 1981 Anais Mitchell grew up on a farm in Addison County, Vermont. She began writing songs at 17 and performing them during her school days, where she studied political science and languages. Her 2nd recording, “Hymns for the Exiled,” eventually reached the ears of Ani DiFranco, who signed Mitchell to her label, Righteous Babe Records. Anaïs Mitchell’s latest release comes in the form of a folk opera. Hadestown is the modern day interpretation of the ancient Greek myth of the poet Opheus and his doomed quest to rescue his wife Eurydice from the underworld. Hadestown began its existence in 2006 as a live “acoustic rock opera” that the Vermont-based singer/songwriter created in collaboration with director Ben t. Matchstick (Bread & Puppet Theater) and arranger / orchestrator Michael Chorney. After loading the sets and the 22-member cast of Vermont performers into a former circus bus and touring New England during “full-on winter,” it was time to rework a few songs. Next, Mitchell called upon a few fellow musicians to lend their voices to a recorded version—not a cast album, but a stand-alone, selcontained song cycle. The result is a veritable Who’s Who of modern indie folk/rock: Justin Vernon of Bon Iver plays Orpheus; Greg Brown is Hades; and Ani DiFranco plays Persephone. Also on hand in smaller roles are the Haden Triplets (Petra, Rachel, and Tanya) as the Fates and Ben Knox Miller of The Low Anthem as the Hermes, Mitchell herself sings the part of Eurydice.] [Hadestown became a 2016 stage musical adaptation of a 2010 folk opera concept album by the same name, written by Anaïs Mitchell. It premiered off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop on May 6, 2016 and ran through July 31. The show was developed for the stage and directed by Rachel Chavkin. Yesterday she released a new single that was produced by musician Zach Balch at his studios in Dallas. The new song is called here in KC and is hoping to get started on recording a full length album this Spring with Zach Balch, who recorded and produced “I Want More For My Daughters.” Amy writes music to bring her honest lyrics to life. Amy Marcus studied photography at the Kansas City Art Institute. She is a mother of three and works as a professional photographer and personal chef. Amy is currently making preparations to start recording a full length album this Spring with musical friend, Zach Balch.]

Michelle Bacon works as a freelance writer and has written for The Kansas City Star, The Deli Magazine KC, and Folk Alliance International. Michelle Bacon plays drums and sings harmony vocals with Chris Meck and the Guilty Birds. She also plays with Heidi Lynne Gluck. 19. Joon Moon – “Tiger (Radio Edit)”

[First full length album from band formed in 2014 in Montmartre area of Paris. This follows the June 2017 release of their EP Tiger, their April 2016 EP, Call Me, and their October 2015 EP Chess. Joon Moon is the meeting of House producer Julien Decoret, drummer Raphael Chassin and American expat and singer/song writer extraordinaire Krystle Warren. After ten years of touring the world playing double bass with Marc Collin’s Nouvelle Vague ensemble, alongside excursions into house music on the Yellow Productions Art of Disco compilations, not to mention co-producing Florent Marchet’s Bamby Galaxy album, it was time for songwriter/producer/renaissance man Julien Decoret to dedicate his heart and soul to a new challenge. With Raphaël Chassin, (Hugh Coltman, Vanessa Paradis, Pauline Croze) on drums, helping out with the production and arrangements, and Sébastien Trouvé as sound engineer, Decoret set out on his retro-modern Joon Moon mission, laying out the contours of a world where trip-hop, jazz, soul and electronic music live side by side, sharing their joys and sorrows. The only missing element was that one last bit of magic, a voice that could take the project to ever-loftier heights. Enter Krystle Warren. She had worked with Rufus Wainwright, and Scritti Politti’s Green Gartside, and had made forays into house music herself by providing vocals to two cuts off Hercules and Love Affair’s, The Feast of the Broken Heart. That’s not even mentioning her own band, Krystle Warren and The Faculty – and its three albums – which display her impressive grasp of soul music, folk, blues…With Tiger, the band’s social concerns are brought to the forefront. A timely piece from a Franco-American band about the need to question authority and the power structure of society. Tiger sees its tension build up like an onimous populist, and turns into defiance. Art and love in a movement towards emancipation.]

20. Emmaline Twist – “Desperate Measures”

[Emmaline Twist, Kansas City’s Darkwave / Post-Punk / Shoegaze project have released “Dissimulation 1”, four songs in digital format, their first since last year’s release of “Vega” b/w “Moon Eyes”. Meredith McGrade on vocals & guitar, Kristin Conkright on bass, Jonathan Knecht on drums, and Krysztof Nemeth on baritone Guitar. Recorded, Mixed, and Produced at Massive Sound by Paul Malinowski, and Mastered by Mike Nolte at Eureka Mastering, these four songs showcase the dark and driving nature of the Emmaline Twist sound, complete with all the mood and texture that the band has crafted through their live performances. 22. Katy Guillen and The Girls – “Can’t Live Here Anymore”

[For this new album the band worked with producer Lennon Bone. The band reworked songs from the 2012 album Katy & Go-Go, the 2014 Katy & The Girls eponymous debut album, and from 2016’s “Heavy Days” with one new song. Katy Guillen and The Girls, were formed in September of 2012 in Kansas City. The blues influenced roots rock trio is made up of Katy Guillen on guitar & vocals, Claire Adams on bass & vocals, & Stephanie Williams on drums.]

24. Rachel Mallin & The Wild Type – “Teenage Bodies”

[Indie synthpop from Kansas City based, 5-piece band that includes: Rachel Mallin on lead vocals & guitar, Justin Walker on bass, Austin Edmisten on drums & back-up vocals, Jesse Bartmess on synthesizers & keyboards. “Teenage Bodies,” the latest single from Rachel Mallin & the Wild Type, shows a band solidifying its identity. Mallin wrote, recorded and produced her first album, The Persistence of Vision, in 2014 — a solo effort that spoke to her synthpop sensibilities and landed her on Kansas City radio. That same year, she left the University of Missouri to pursue a music career, and enlisted bassist Justin Walker and drummer Austin Edmisten to form The Wild Type. By mid-2016, the act — with keyboardist Jesse Bartmess and former guitarist Matt Kosinski — released its debut EP, Degenerate Matters, recorded, produced, and mastered by Joel Nanos at Element Recording Studios. [Lawrence, Kansas based Sean Hunt is Approach. Sequenced, Produced, Recorded, Mixed & Mastered By: Aikido Bray at Prosidio Gardens in Lovely Lawrence, Ks. Sean Hunt writes: “Elegant Knock” started out as a beat album named after a production night I throw in Lawrence. It turned into a 10 track album that pays respect to a sound and vibe I loved in High School. It isn’t a throwback project on some I wish it was 96′ ish, it’s a “why aren’t we still freaking these sounds now” thang. My original concept was flipped when I dug out my old Ensoniq EPS 16+ and started funking around. The next thing I knew I was making a album I wanted to rap on. I did all of the production on the EPS (everything and it’s was headache) and made a few mixing edits on the Ensoniq ASR-10 (mainly stereo pans). I pushed myself to use the tools of yesteryear to capture the feeling I was seeking out (it was a pain in the ass and I lost a ton of beats in the process). I loved every second of it though. I feel like it’s the perfect bridge between my Lincoln Marshall project with Milkdrop and my album “Antique Mall” (coming out this year I promise).]
