For 19 years Mark Manning has served as Coordinator of the KCK Organic Teaching Gardens, an Initiative of The University of Kansas School of Medicine, Office of Cultural Enhancement and Diversity, Health Careers Pathways Program, K-12. Each year Mark works with 1000 to 2000 students, between K through 8th grades, with organic, "raised bed" gardens built directly on the school grounds of three Middle Schools and four Elementary Schools in the inner city of the Kansas City, Kansas school district. Mark conducts over 440 workshops annually in classrooms at these schools. He started the project under the guidance of Marcia Pomeroy, in 1999, after working in a literacy program. The KCK Organic Teaching Gardens has been financially supported through grants from The Kauffman Foundation, and The University of Kansas Medical Center. The project has been recognized locally and nationally by The National Gardening Association, The Kansas City Star, The Kansas City Community Gardens, The Green Bliss Festival, The Urban Farm & Garden Tour, and on the PBS television program America's Harvest. Mark learned about gardening from his grandmother Edna Jacobsen on the family's McCool Junction, Nebraska farm. His grandmother raised a huge garden, chickens, sheep and cattle. She preserved apples, wild berry jams, and beets and virtually everything she grew was canned for consumption in winter months. Edna raised seven children with no running water and as a child lived in a sod house. His passion for the school gardening program has been fueled by the fact that he doesn't see the lessons he learned from his grandmother passed down to kids today. Kids need to know where their food comes from, especially with the rise of diabetes, and over weight Americans. We can all learn from our gardens how to treat ourselves and the world better.

Kevin Morby – “Random Act Of Kindness” from: THIS IS A PHOTOGRAPH / Dead Oceans / May 13, 2022 [The third single release from Kevin Morby’s upcoming 7th album THIS IS A PHOTOGRAPH. From http://www.rollingstone.com: “In January 2020, songwriter Kevin Morby witnessed his father collapse from a medical event while visiting his childhood home in Kansas. In a state of shock, the singer spent the evening looking at old family photos and fixated on an image of his father as a young man, looking, as Morby states, ‘full of confidence.’ The experience forced Morby to confront both the idea of mortality and the passage of time — and, after an extended sojourn in Tennessee, these reflections came together in the form of his upcoming album, This Is a Photograph. To mark the announcement, the singer released the record’s eponymous single, accompanied by a music video directed by Chantal Anderson. Produced by frequent Morby collaborator Sam Cohen, This Is a Photograph was primarily written in Memphis’ historic Peabody Hotel, where the singer-songwriter holed up in search of inspiration and self-realization amongst the city’s dark past.” Morby will also embark on a 65 City tour of Europe and North America through the majority of 2022, which starts May 20 in Madrid, Spain and wraps Nov. 12 in Vancouver, BC. On October 16, 2020 Kevin Morby released SUNDOWNER, ranked #20 on WMM’s 120 Best recordings of 2020 and was the 6th release from Kevin Robert Morby born April 2, 1988. SUNDOWNER was the follow up to his 2019 release OH MY GOD. Kevin Morby released CITY MUSIC in 2017. Kevin learned to play guitar when he was 10. In his teens he formed the band Creepy Aliens. 17-year-old Morby dropped out of Blue Valley Northwest High School, got his GED, and moved from his native Kansas City to Brooklyn in the mid-2000s, supporting himself by working bike delivery and café jobs. He later joined the noise-folk group Woods on bass. While living in Brooklyn, he became close friends and roommates with Cassie Ramone of the punk trio Vivian Girls, and the two formed a side project together called The Babies, who released albums in 2011 and 2012. He began a solo career in 2013 releasing his debut album HARLEM RIVER. His 2nd album STILL LIFE was released in 2014. His album SINGING SAW was in WMM’s The 116 Best Recordings of 2016. His album CITY MUSIC was in WMM’s The 118 Best Recordings of 2018.]

Fantastic Negrito – “Trudoo” from: WHITE JESUS BLACK PROBLEMS / Storefront Records / Expected June 3, 2022 [Follow up to HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND YET? Released August 4, 2020. This followed his June 15, 2018 release, PLEASE DON’T BE DEAD on Blackball Universe – Cooking Vinyl Records that was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album. His 2016 album The Last Days of Oakland won a Grammy award for Best Contemporary Blues Album at the 59th Grammy Awards. In 2019, his album Please Don’t Be Dead won the same category for the 61st Grammy Awards.Fantastic Negrito was raised in an orthodox Muslim household. His father was a Somali-Caribbean immigrant who mostly played traditional African music. He was the eight of 15 children. When, at the age of 12, Negrito’s family moved from Massachusetts to Oakland, California. Oakland in 1970s was a million miles from Negrito’s conservative childhood. He went from Arab chants to Funkadelic in one day. By the time he was 20, Negrito had taught himself to play every instrument he could get his hands on. He was recording music, and after some difficulties on the streets he packed his bags and headed to LA, armed with a demo on cassette. Negrito signed with a million dollar deal at Interscope. The record deal was a disaster. Gangsta rap was ruling the airwaves and Negrito was in the wrong place at the wrong era. Negrito came out of the deal with a failed album and his confidence gutted. In 2000, Negrito was in a near fatal car accident that put him in a coma. For four weeks it was touch and go. Because his muscles atrophied while bedridden, he had to go through months of frustrating physical therapy to regain use of his legs. Rods were placed throughout his body. And worst of all, his playing hand was mutilated. Back in Oakland, Negrito forgot about life as a musician. He got married, he planted vegetables, raised his own chickens, and made money growing weed. He also settled into being a man, on his own, clear of the distractions of wanting to be a star. And then his son Kyu was born. He began recording without the hindrances that come with chasing trends. Negrito turned to the original DNA of all American music, the Blues. The beating life had given him primed him to channel his literal and musical forefathers: the Blues musicians of the Delta]
Marah McFadden – “Withdrawal” from: SIDE SHOW (EP) / Marah McFadden/ May 21, 2022. [Singer and actress Marah McFadden writes: “Growing up in small town Kansas, my family lived painfully below the poverty line. A superhero and single mother of four, my mom had to scrimp and save to be able to afford the dance lessons she put us in (starting age three). The arts became my great equalizer. Through theatre and dance, I found a precious and priceless part of myself that I was able to hold onto and keep sacred; giving me a deep desire to prove myself artistically. Every artistic endeavor I’ve encountered has thus been approached with that same fervor.” Marah has trained as an actor at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting in New York City and the open Jar Institute, She has appeared on the television show Billions, has worked onstage as a vocalist, actress, and choreographer More info at: http://www.instagram.com/marah.mcfab/%5D

Gee Watts – “Confidence (feat. Kye Colors & Jass) (Radio Edit)” from: NO RUSH (EP) / Caviart Records / March 23, 2022 [Gee Watts released the 4-track EP, NO RUSH 3 on March 23, 2022. Kansas City emcee Gee Watts latest music capsule “No Rush 3”. The Ep includes features from Kye Colors & Jass. Production Includes Mike Summers, Money Miiike, & Drizi Dre of Tha GoonEz. GeeWatts started in 2009 with his Mix tape NO RUSH. // CTYDWRITING wrote about Gee Watts for https://ctydcreativespace.blog on March 21, 2022 – “It’s not uncommon to see that many Creatives will have different talents for which they have different uses. When one uses their craft to motivate and inspire others, however, it speaks volumes about their character. Gee Watts from Kansas City, Missouri, is a Rapper and distinguished figure within his city. Working with some prominent figures in the music industry, Gee is viewed as an inspiration and motivator to many Creatives residing on both sides of KC. Watts states there’s footage of him rapping Snoop Dogg’s “Gin and Juice” as a one-year-old, claiming that music has been with him from the beginning. Like other Creatives, Watts’ has been met with wins, losses, and lessons on many occasions. Despite the obstacles, his faith and encouragement from loved ones have kept him rooted to stay the course.” “I love the locals. I’ve worked with a lot of them, probably too many to name. I want to work with Janelle Monaé, she’s beyond special. Morgan Cooper, I need a cameo on Bel-Air. I wanna work with Ron Ron and Tech, they’re the two rappers I looked up to as a kid like alright I need in. I was on Techs project I want him on mines.” —Gee Watts. “Gee describes music in KC as unheard and under appreciated. Kanas City’s sound does not receive the proper credit it deserves. Places such as Detroit and Los Angeles incorporate the same bass synth & string sounds originating from KC and The Bay. Many do not associate KC with a style that has grown so eminent and recognized elsewhere. Watts will continue to work through his craft to educate and support those who come after, declaring his mission statement “Save Our Babies.” He says the future is God’s plan, the will of Allah. Wherever life may take Gee Watts, he’ll be 100% him until the end. “Without confidence, you’re twice defeated. With confidence, you win before you begin.” A man we’re confident will see many more wins. Always move #CloserToYourDreams” // More info at: http://www.geewatts1.bandcamp.com.]

Brodie Rush has been working to get his life back after surviving an Aortic Dissection in October 2019, and after being in a coma, and after months of therapy, recovery, and healing through two dangerous years of Covid-19. Brodie was working on a new song before this life-threatening event and it’s taken over two years to get it together.
Be/Non released their critically acclaimed 6th album, Mystic Sunrise / Sunset Magic, on Haymaker Records on February 29, 2016, followed by Freedom Palace in 2018 that had been stuck in the studio for 12 years due to disputes with the original record label and personnel changes in the band until Brodie rescued the tapes and remastered the album for Haymaker Records.
In 2020 – Last time we talked with Brodie was in April 2020 when Brodie released a new album containing alternate mixes, isolated tracks and demo versions of Be/Non’s 2009 release, A Mountain of Yeses. The release was called, A Valley of No: The Alternative A Mountain of Yeses. And it was released through Haymaker Records.
The Originally released May 12, 2009, “A Mountain of Yeses” was made by: Brodie Rush on vocals, guitar, bass, drums, keyboards; Ben Ruth on bass guitar; Ryan Shank on drums & percussion, Jeremiah James on guitar, Moog & Vocals. Brodie writes: “This album is a journey into the sculpting process of creating “A Mountain of Yeses”. In contrast to the original release, this compilation contains alternate mixes, isolated tracks and demo versions. Be/Non presents a bizarro-like version of the AMOY album, showing an alternate universe what could have been if the creation of the album went on a divergent path. Behold the paradoxical serendipity of Be/Non’s unique take on constructing a space-themed story/album. “
Brodie shared a new song that he was still mixing called: “Zipper Club” The song refers to his physical experience of being opened up in surgery and then being “zipped up.”

Art d’Ecco – “Only Ones” from: “Only Ones” – Single / Paper Bag Records Records / April 6, 2022 [Last year Art d’Ecco released IN STANDARD DEFINITION on April 23, 2021 was on e of WMM 120 Best Releases of 2021. Art d’Ecco is based in British Columbia, “There’s more than a little David Bowie in both the sonic and fashion leanings of Art d’Ecco, a performer who fluidly crosses musical and gender lines, creating highly memorable tracks — and sporting an unforgettable look. Often labelled “neo glam,” the music boasts hints of everything from ’50s pop to psychedelics, from Velvet Underground-era art rock to Grimes-inspired electronics.” – CBC Music Art d’Ecco freleased the album Trespasser on Paper Bag Records on October 12, 2018. When d’Ecco moved into his grandmother’s cottage on one of the islands, he hadn’t planned on creating a new project. But, as it often does, circumstance charted his course. His grandmother, living with Alzheimer’s, suffered a related phenomenon called ‘sundowning,’ which triggers increased agitation and anxiety around sunset. “The only way to calm this lady down was to sit down at the piano,” says d’Ecco. He would play “Bohemian Rhapsody,” passing it off as Beethoven. After she was relocated, d’Ecco remained in the empty house where he had played as a child. Draped in memory, he gravitated toward the piano, spending the long, lonesome, quiet nights on the bench before the instrument. This is where Art d’Ecco was created. He relocated to a new cottage, built a studio and barricaded himself with copies of Deerhunter’s Cryptograms, Bowie’s Low, and choice krautrock records. In this solitude, d’Ecco would chase tones for hours. The result is a richly-realized confluence of the ferocious spark of those trailblazers and a distinct sadness, with d’Ecco as mad scientist, stitching together these delicious fragments and animating them. Art d’Ecco was our guest on September 29, 2021.]

Monta At Odds – “Hands Trace The Miles” from: “Hands Trace The Miles” / The Record Machine / May 6, 2022 [This single follows the bands recent single and cover of the New Order classic “The Perfect Kiss.” Both singles will eventually be part of a companion album called PEAKED to be released in June, that has remixes and alternative versions of Monta AT Odds’ 2021 album, PEAK OF ETERNAL LIGHT. On the track the band is: Dedric Moore on synths & programming, Mikal Shapiro on vocals, Matthew Heinrich on drums, Lucas Behrens on baritone guitar, Krysztof Nemeth on baritone guitar, and Kenn Jankowski on synths.. // Monta At Odds released their 7th album PEAK OF ETERNAL LIGHT on July 23, 2021.. // Monta At Odds is a Kansas City combo led by the brothers Dedric and Delaney Moore. The two have played music together all their lives and have been exploring the Monta At Odds sound since the band’s debut in 2000. Dedric’s pulsing, melodic bass and Delaney’s artfully unhinged synthesizers frame the band’s central character, which is fleshed out by a talented cast of musicians and collaborators. The result is a heady sonic pool that has been inscrutably referred to as ‘Ummagumma meets Arthur Russell’s mutant disco at Vangelis’s house.’ // In 2020 the band added acclaimed vocalists, guitarists, and songwriters Mikal Shapiro and Teri Quinn to the lineup. With Mikal and Teri’s otherworldly vocal contributions, Monta At Odds continued to push their alternate reality into streamlined consciousness. With Lucas Behrens on guitar and synth and Matthew Heinrich on drums both rounds out the stellar lineup. The nad releaased a remix of their single “When I’m Gone” mixed by The Record Machine label mate Kenn Jankowski, lead singer, co-founder of The Republic Tigers. The remix featured Kenn’s voice singing with Teri’s voice. The collaboration led to Kenn joining Monta At Odds as a voclist and synth player. And when Kenn plays out as The Republic Tigers the members of Monta At Odds become The Republic Tigers. On December 18, 2020 Monta At Odds released A GREAT CONJUNCTION their 5-song EP released just in to coincide with the ‘double-planet’ convergence of Jupiter and Saturn on December 21 2020, which last occurred in 1226. These tunes form a soundtrack to the planetary event, five songs linked together by the vastness of space and as a meditation on our infinitesimal place in the universe. The EP featured Krystof Nemeth, Teri Quinn, Alexander Thomas, Dedric Moore and Matthew Heinrich. // In late 2020 Monta At Odds released the single “When Stars Grow Old.” // Monta At Odds released their 4-song EP Zen Diagram on May 1, 2020. The album was a more post-punk leaning follow-up to Argentum Dreams. Expect minimal rhythms set to maximum noise, shoegazed guitar signals, slo-mo psychedelic darkwave, endless dub echo, and extended-cut warped disco. Live musicians manipulating time and space via knob turning, cymbal cracking, and pedal pushing as they interlock into hypnotic moments of heavenly bliss that seem to hold forever, captivating the mind. // Monta At Odds released their 6th full length album Argentum Dreams on Oct 19, 2018. Dedric Moore and Teri Quinn joined us on WMM on August 18, 2021 where Teri announced she was leaving the band. More info at: http://www.facebook.com/montaatodds%5D

The duo formed in the final months of 2021, drawing on influences like Fever Ray, Budgie-era Siouxsie and the Banshees and early M.I.A. Combining elements of their high intensity live shows with art-rock improvisation, Kianna and Cale took to the basement to self produce their brand of industrial, drum heavy electro-pop in October 2021. Cale Parks, Ori, and KiannaAlarid White
11:15 – Interview with Kianna Alarid White & Cale Parks
Many of us were first introduced to Kianna Alarid White as part of the critically-acclaimed indie band, Tilly and the Wall, touring through the mid to late 2000s with bands such as She and Him, Bright Eyes, Rilo Kiley, and Of Montreal, playing venues around the world and major festivals like Coachella, Japan’s Summersonic, Reading, as well as performing on Late Night with David Letterman and Sesame Street before going on hiatus in 2013. Kianna has also performed guest vocals on Rilo Kiley’s “The Absence of God”, “In the Sun” by She & Him and co-wrote and sang on Tiësto’s song “You Are My Diamond”. In 2017, Kianna launched her band, Yes You Are, with husband and co-writer Jared White, with many song placements in movies, television and commercials, including a Pepsi Super Bowl 51 commercial. Known for their electrifying live performances, Yes You Are shared the stage with the likes of K. Flay,Young the Giant and Fitz and the Tantrums, and toured the US with Neon Trees. On November 15, 2019 they released one of our favorite albums of that year, “HERE’S TO THE GREAT UNKOWNS. In mid 2020 Kianna announced the band’s break up when unexpected and major changes in the lineup served as a clear sign it was time to move on. Kianna and Jared decided to start a new band behind Kianna as a solo artist Kianna White, releasing the single, “Homecoming Queen “ on September 25, 2020, along with an incredible video that Kianna herself filmed, starred in and edited alone in her bedroom using an iPhone, a Snapchat filter, a flashlight and iMovie). On April 30, 2021 Kianna released the single “All Alone With Everything.”
Cale Parks is best known for decades of drumming in the bands: Aloha, and Yeasayer, and in high profile side hustles such as: Passion Pit, Chet Faker, and Joan of Arc. Cale released the albums, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT on Sept. 26, 2009, and SPARKFACE on November 3, 2008, and the EP TO SWIFT MARS on Augusgust 3, 2004. But On May 18, 2015, Cale released his 4-track solo EP, LAGOON FOOL giving his fans the first sign of becoming a more of a “mood-altering” electronic producer with his multi-faceted record featuring interlocking melodies and everything from acid techno asides to piano-laced synth progressions. Cale followed LAGOON FOOL with his most recent solo EP, BOARDS, released on January 24, 2020 on Whirling Wolf Records. Boards ventures even further into the ether, piling on the sort of polychromatic chords, artful hooks, and mood-altering melodies one might find on an old Air or Durutti Column album. A lot of this has to do with how it was made: in Parks’ home studio rather than a cramped apartment room, which gave him space to think and toy with a wide range of instruments. Listeners can thank a long overdue lifestyle change: a move from Brooklyn to Kansas City that made Parks look at music differently. “I didn’t own a car in New York,” he explains, “so all of my listening was done as I walked around the city. There’s something about the energy of New York that requires that electricity. Moving to Kansas changed the style of music I wanted to hear; I wanted room to let records breathe.”
We just heard “I’m So Nervous” from Ezmerelda. Kianna and Cales’s first single from their musical collaboration. Kianna White and Cale Parks Thank you for being with us on Wednesday MidDay Medley.
Last year, Team Love released a special collection of music from Tilly & The Wall plus.
Background info: Yes You Are was: Jared White – songwriter, rhythm guitar, backup vocals; Kianna Alarid – songwriter, lead vocals; Jacob Temeyer – lead guitar, keyboards, backup vocals; Joseph Wilner – drums ; and Willie Jordan – bass guitar, back up vocals. Yes You Are lead singer
Kianna Alarid White was also lead singer and bassist for the critical acclaimed band, Tilly and the Wall, who released 4 albums on Team Love Records (founded by Conor Oberst & Nate Krenkel in 2003). Tilly and the Wall was an indie pop group from Omaha, Nebraska. Their name originated from a children’s book called Tillie and the Wall, written by Leo Lionni. They are particularly noted for having a tap dancer, Jamie Pressnall, instead of a drummer. // The group formed in 2001 after the demise of several Omaha groups, including Conor Oberst’s Park Ave., of which Neely Jenkins and Jamie Pressnall (then Jamie Williams) were members. Jamie brought along Kianna Alarid from another band that broke up called Magic Kiss. Derek Pressnall and Nick White, natives of Dunwoody, Georgia were drawn to the music scene in Omaha, Nebraska and moved. Nick White was also one of the few constants for Bright Eyes in 2005, appearing on I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning and Digital Ash in a Digital Urn, as well as touring worldwide with the band. // Their first show was an open-mic night at the now defunct Ranch Bowl. Their first release, Woo!, was recorded in Conor Oberst’s garage, self-published, and distributed at shows around the Omaha area. The group released a limited-pressing eponymous 7″ on Rue Royale Records, followed by their debut LP, Wild Like Children in 2004. It was the flagship release on Oberst’s Team Love label and made with the help of Presto studios. Wild Like Children garnered the band a substantial amount of critical acclaim and propelled them to national tours with Bright Eyes, Rilo Kiley, and Of Montreal. In early 2005, Tilly and the Wall became the first “band in residence” at Omaha’s Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, using the Bemis Underground’s Studio T to develop their follow-up album to Wild Like Children. // In September of that year, they released “You and I Misbehaving” as a limited-pressing 7″ in the UK through indie label Trash Aesthetics. This release picked up further critical acclaim as well as support from BBC radio broadcaster Steve Lamacq. They played their first show outside of the US at the Freebutt in Brighton on February 14, 2006. // Bottoms of Barrels, the band’s follow-up to Wild Like Children, was released on May 23, 2006. Tilly and the Wall appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman on October 27, 2006, to perform “Bad Education”. The song was not played in full due to time constraints. A number of live dates were played to support the album. The band toured with Jenny Lewis in support of her album featuring The Watson Twins, Rabbit Fur Coat. They then went on their first headlining tour to promote Bottoms of Barrels, with acts such as David Dondero, Now It’s Overhead, and Wolf Colonel supporting them. They played the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 27, 2007. In addition to performing at 2007’s Splendour in the Grass festival, Tilly and the Wall toured Australia. Band members Jamie Williams and Derek Pressnall were married shortly after the album’s release, on August 12, 2006. // On February 25, Tilly and the Wall released a video for a new song entitled “Beat Control”. The digital release of the song was on March 4, with a new album track “Cacophony” appearing as a b-side. “Beat Control” was released only as a single and was not included on the album released later in 2008. // Tilly and the Wall’s third album, o, was released on June 17, 2008. Two songs they performed on their 2007 tour, “Too Excited” and “Chandelier Lake”, appear on the album. // Tilly have recorded their own version of the ABC song for the new season of Sesame Street. // The first single from the album is “Pot Kettle Black”. It was featured in the pilot episode of 90210, TV spots for the Seth Rogen film Observe and Report, the film Whip It and its soundtrack album, and in the video game Midnight Club: Los Angeles. // Tilly and the Wall released a new album entitled Heavy Mood on October 2, 2012, available in CD and vinyl formats.
In 2020 Team Love released a 16-track retro of Tilly and The Wall’s music from 2002

H.E.R. – “Change (From the Netflix series “We the People” from: “Change (from the Netflix series “We the People”-Single / RCA Records / June 4, 2021 [Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson (born June 27, 1997), known professionally as H.E.R. (pronounced “her”, an acronym for “Having Everything Revealed”), is an American R&B singer. After initial music appearances and singles under her real name, Wilson re-emerged in 2016 as H.E.R., releasing her debut EP H.E.R. Volume 1 under RCA, followed by four subsequent EPs. Her first compilation album H.E.R. (2017), consisting of tracks from her first two EPs plus six additional songs, was nominated for five Grammy Awards, winning Best R&B Performance and Best R&B Album. // Her second compilation album, I Used to Know Her, was nominated for five Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year and Song of the Year for “Hard Place”. In 2021, she was awarded the Grammy Award for Song of the Year for “I Can’t Breathe” and the Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Fight for You” from the film Judas and the Black Messiah with her also winning the Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Performance for the latter song the following year. Her debut full-length album Back of My Mind was released in June 2021. // Wilson was born in Vallejo, California to a Filipina mother and an African-American father. Raised in California’s San Francisco Bay Area, she was introduced to the public as an artist as a young child, covering Alicia Keys on piano on the Today Show, before competing on Radio Disney’s The Next BIG Thing when she was 12 years old. // Addressing the secrecy over her identity, she has said: “The mystery is a metaphor for who I am, or who I was at the time of creating the project… I feel like oftentimes we don’t like to be open as people about our emotions or things that we are going through. At the time [of recording], I was very closed off except for when I was writing or when I was in the studio.” // She explained further: “I am a voice for women who feel like they’re alone in these situations. This project came from emotion, and that’s what I want it to be about – not what I look like or who I’m with, but the raw emotion and support for women.” To NPR she said, “I feel like this is the era of the anti-star. I really just wanted it to be about the music, and get away from, ‘Who is she with?’ and ‘What is she wearing?'” // After being signed to RCA under Sony at the age of 14, Wilson released a single in 2014 titled “Something to Prove” under her real name. // Re-emerging in late 2016 with a new persona, Wilson released her debut EP, H.E.R. Vol. 1 on September 9, 2016, produced by songwriter David “Swagg R’Celious” Harris. She received support from Usher, Tyrese, Pusha T, and Wyclef Jean; labelmates Alicia Keys and Bryson Tiller helped get the word out through Twitter co-signs, shoutouts, and re-posts. In April 2017, Rihanna posted an Instagram clip with H.E.R.’s track “Focus” playing in the background. The clip has been viewed over 5 million times. Additional public support came from Issa Rae of HBO’s Insecure, Taraji P. Henson of Empire, Kylie Jenner, and Kendall Jenner. // NPR listed H.E.R. Vol. 1 as the first selection in its “5 Essential R&B Albums You Slept On”. Calling the music “Slow-burning R&B that zooms in on emotional highs and lows,” Rolling Stone included H.E.R. in its March 2017 “10 Artists You Need To Know” roundup. Forbes named her one of “5 Alternative R&B Artists to Look Out for in 2017”, reporting: “In the same vein as The Weeknd’s enigmatic introduction to the world, H.E.R.’s image remains a mystery. The irony, though, is that her moniker is an acronym for Having Everything Revealed.” // Wilson’s follow-up EP, H.E.R. Vol. 2 (2017) also produced by Harris, was released on June 16, 2017 and includes the single “Say It Again”. Also in 2017, she was on tour with Bryson Tiller for the Set It Off tour, and concluded her first headlining tour, the Lights On Tour, in support of her most recent effort H.E.R. Vol. 2. She released H.E.R. Vol. 2, The B Sides (2017), also produced by Swagg R’Celious on October 20, 2017 along with the single titled 2, released on October 13, 2017. The compilation album H.E.R. was released on October 20, 2017, comprising the songs from each of the three EP’s in this series. The album won Best R&B Album and received four other nominations at the 61st Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year and Best New Artist for H.E.R. // Her second compilation album I Used to Know Her was released on August 30, 2019. She performed as one of the headliners of the 2019 Global Citizen Festival in Central Park, New York on September 28. On October 5, she participated in the 2019 edition of the Rock in Rio festival located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Among the headliners were Drake, Foo Fighters, Bon Jovi, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Iron Maiden, Pink and Muse. // On September 20, 2020, she sang Prince’s song “Nothing Compares 2 U” for the In Memoriam segment of the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards. In February 2021, during the pre-game festivities for Super Bowl LV, she performed “America the Beautiful”, singing and playing guitar. On June 17, 2021, her single “Damage” topped the US R&B radio chart. The song is from her debut full-length album Back of My Mind, which was released on June 18, 2021. // In August 2021, it was announced that Wilson was in final negotiations to make her feature film debut in the upcoming film adaptation of The Color Purple, playing the role of Squeak. She also sings a duet with Tauren Wells on the song called “Hold Us Together”. // On November 30, 2021, the Apple Music Awards announced H.E.R. as the winner of Songwriter of the Year.]

The 7-song, La Cuarentena EP includes a brand new version of the first Making Movies song, “La Marcha” and the lullaby “Could You?” (both mixed by Jim Eno of Spoon and tracked at Memphis Magnetic studio), and the love ballad “Una Vida.” The EP was ranked #25 inWMM’s 120 Best Recordings of 2021. The EP also includes: covers of Talking Heads and Tears for Fears classics, plus bonus live acoustic tracks. This EP was made available on BandCamp for only three days on February 5 through February 7, 2021. Since then it has been made private, an is not available anywhere. Making Movies released their single “Could You” on January 12, 2021. About “Could You” lead singer Enrique Javier Chi wrote, “I was thinking about what to share for “Could You?” and I just go back to the fact that Memphis is a profound place… it is a place where you can feel what America truly is and where it comes from. I think you see and feel the reality that so much of this nation was built from exploiting people. You can see that our pop culture is driven by the Black community and yet that community is still the most oppressed in the nation. Things are still so messed up. // Memphis is the place where Elvis started singing black music with a country twang and where Martin Luther King Jr. was shot. It’s a beautiful place, it’s a charming place, it feels at times downtrodden and it’s a place that reminds me of home (both KC and Panamá in different ways. Our experiences going to Memphis gave us the context to create “Could You?” It was filmed originally for AMERI’KANA TV..” Making Movies released their critically acclaimed album ameri’kana through 3/2 Recordings on May 24, 2019. This was #1 on WMM’s 119 Best Recordings of 2019. Produced by Steve Berlin and Ben Yonas. The notes for this album read: “ameri’kana is a canary in a coal mine, the watchman at the tower. It is a desire to remember where we come from and assure that we better ourselves in every step along our journey. Every chapter is an example, a reason to not be silent and not accept corrupt leaders as something inevitable. ameri’kana is based on faith, faith that every person on this continent carries within themselves the ability to grow, to awaken their consciousness and merits of the same rights. We were accomplices to get ourselves to this point so we will have to be accomplices in the solutions.” This was the band’s follow up release to their critically acclaimed, I Am Another You, released May 26, 2017. The quartet has toured with Arcade Fire, Thievery Corporation, Cold War Kids, Los Lobos, Ozomatli, Tennis, Sergio Mendoza of Calexico, Rodrigo y Gabriela, and Hurray for the Riff Raff. Enrique Chi joined WMM on May 19, 2021. ]

Mensa Deathsquad – “Chin Up, Eyes Wide Open (Radio Edit)” from: YOU WILL HEAR THUNDER / Gran Cavalera / April 12, 2022 [This is the second single from the 14-track album YOU WILL HEAR THUNDER. Written, performed and produced by Mensa Deathsquad. Mastered at Element Recording and Mastering. Brandon Phillips of Mensa Deathsquad, writes: “By the time I wrote Chin Up Eyes Wide Open, I was just this little emotional soap bubble, exploding in slow motion. I felt safe in my own skin for the first time in a really long time. This is part of trauma recovery – early on there is this identity crisis that starts in your bone marrow and extends outward into the far reaches of the galaxy and it takes a lot of effort to find yourself again in all that messy tissue and ice cold vastness. By some quirk of luck, I bumped into myself by chance when a friend made a joke about my being exactly her “tall, thin and emotionally unavailable” type. To which I shot back, “Babe, all I am is emotionally available. I am skin and emotions.” Boom. There I was, hiding in plain sight. So “Chin Up, Eyes Wide Open” is a song about my deciding to live that punch line and to just fully embody “skin and emotions” and to never mask that version of myself again. It’s a song about showing up for yourself in all your flawed, fucked up glory.” “Chin Up, Eyes Wide Open” is a follow up to “Light” released November 16, 2021. Brandon Phillips writes, “The electronic music that I daydream about, always has that Stooges layer of dirt and shop grease on it. That’s what I want.” Follow up to CYCLIST, the second album from Mensa Deathsquad released February 23, 2021. The cyclist was released with these notes: Brandon Phillips laid in a Kansas City hospital through the winter of 2019-2020 as his own album release (the unintentionally but appropriately named Patient Zero by his alt-synthwave band Mensa Deathsquad) passed by in the outside world. The first tracks from his debut album Patient Zero were premiering and, chained to a Luciferian merry-go-round of post-operative infections, Brandon strained through the pharmaceutical blur to do promotion for his record, emailing editors and scraping together the necessary pieces they needed. Since his surgery a month prior had gone sideways, and the time, energy, and planning for things like photos, videos and shows had been blown to smithereens, all he had left to look forward to beyond the IVs and the machines that go “ping” was this premiere and the street date. And then came COVID-19, like a rogue wave, to finish off the aimless Mensa Deathsquad sailboat. // But Brandon didn’t die and the boat didn’t sink. As the squall receded and the wanton eye of cruel gods passed over him, Brandon clung to the boat and swore revenge… // As the aphorism goes, “revenge is sweet” and thus Brandon and his Mensa Deathsquad will have the triumphant last laugh. Holed up in the spare bedroom of his apartment in Kansas City with an open wound in his abdomen, two surgical drains, and a severely compromised immune system, Brandon slipped back into his Mensa Deathsquad persona and began working on what would become his newest full length album, Cyclist. // The music that emerged from Brandon’s isolation and illness is a raw, nearly garage-rock take on darkwave and a perfect continuation of what he had begun on Patient Zero. Launching with the one-two punch of electro-punk noir in “Nothing Is Ever Enough” and “Therapist” before the pounding synth-rock of “The Disappointment Of The Christ,” Brandon fixes his furious eyes upon the provocative hypocrisy and violence that results from American Christianity. // A heady package of nudge nudges and intellectual ruminations (a trademark of Brandon’s past as a smartpunk upstart in such seminal bands as The Gadjits and Architects), Cyclist carries both a powerful music punch, a cultural rummaging through pop culture, and a run through his ever-evolving intellect. A knowing wink to fans of the seminal vampire flick The Lost Boy, “Join Us, Michael” is at once a seething appraisal of a world scorched and defiled by an older generation and a musical love letter to that pivotal ‘80s vampire movie soundtrack. “Leap Year (Chaos Reigns)” which began as a Siouxsie & the Banshees-inspired jam serves as Cyclist’s true north – the story of a drug-fueled wrinkle in time that brought the entire cyclical nature of existence into visibility one fateful night. “End Of The World” is dance-floor nihilist electro-rock blending angular post-punk guitar with the nostalgia of neon synths and electroclash drums, while “Takes One To Know One” slowly approaches the thunderstorm of toxic relationships, soulful vocals, tech house kick drums, and grimey-as-hell bass. // As a fitting conclusion to the tour de force through his psyche, Cyclist closes with yet another two-track charge, the swaggering post-electro sneer at celebrity social media, “Famous” followed by the throbbing Giorgio Moroder-via-Tech House cover of Iggy Pop’s classic “The Passenger.” “It was important to me that I cover ‘The Passenger’ as a letter of intent.” Says Brandon. “The electronic music that I daydream about, always has that Stooges layer of dirt and shop grease on it. That’s what I wanted for Cyclist.” The result is a triumph over the storm, as Mensa Deathsquad sails, unvanquished, into victory. Anson The Ornery – “Burn It Down” from: Simply Sad Songs / Anson The Ornery / February 1, 2022 [Simply Sad Songs is just that, a collection of six original folk songs stripped down to Anson’s woeful voice singing over the lonesome strumming of his acoustic guitar. In the album Anson sings of hating love songs, his inability to care about anyone including himself, and being sorry for everything he’s ever done. This short listen is the ideal album for those dreary nights spent alone in the dark wallowing in your own sorrows. So next time you’re feeling down, lean into it and pop on Simply Sad Songs for the perfect listening experience. Anson is a multimedia artist combining his backgrounds in music, visual arts, writing and acting to create interactive installations and performances that make the viewer a part of the art rather than apart from the art. He has worked on The Great Tempest in a Bottle a website gallery exhibiting a series of sculptures, paintings, short stories and songs inspired by internet culture. Prior to this release Anson The Ornery released DJ Daniel The Cat on May 6, 2020, where Anson created small electronic toy synthesizers to accommodate the size of Daniel The Cat’s paws to create his self titled album synthpop DJ Daniel the Cat containing six upbeat dance songs with lyrics chronicling Daniel’s crippling social anxiety. After Daniel’s disappearance the DJ Daniel the Cat album was believed to be lost over. Kristopher Bruders (Freight Train) and Mark Smeltzer (Rabbit Killer)
Kristopher is a beautiful, peaceful gentleman and then we turn on the microphone and are blown away by the power of the voice, truly reminding me of a far away train, getting closer in the middle of a cold dark night.
Many Kansas City music fans know Kristopher Bruders for his great work with band, Cadillac Flambé with your wife vocalist and keyboardist, Havilah Bruders.
Mark Smeltzer is a principle musician of Rural Grit and the Rural Grit Happy Hour Mondays at The Brick, one of Kansas City longest running weekly live musical shows. Mark has also been part of bands: Columbo, Trouble In Mind, E.I.O., and Dually Jukes.
Mark: “When I saw the Anthony Ladesich short film “Two Sisters” many years ago, I was blown away by Mark’s on screen presence as an actor and musician. Along with being a seasoned musician, Frieght Train Rabbit Killer seems like a perfect vehicle for Mark to continue his work as a performance artist.”
A heavy doom blues American Roots opera about a shaman of the hills and a vigilante bent on justice, they have been performing out of their hometown of KC, Missouri and toured extensively internationally and across the USA. Freight Train Rabbit Killer is storytelling through music, American folk art via gritty blues, electric guitars, suits, and masks.
Featured performances at roots rock and blues festivals such as Muddy Roots, Raut Oak, and Clarksdale Mississippi’s Deep Blues Fest have secured a legion of dedicated followers.

The last time we had Freight Train Rabbit Killer on WMM was just before Halloween on October 25, 2017. When you introduced the first single from their, Wake Snake Death Dance – a hand-printed, 45 rpm (vinyl), 4 – volume release. These 8 songs that made up 4 singles and were recorded, mixed and mastered at Organica Studios with Andrew Crowley who also played keyboards and participated in the recordings.
Waiting three years for a record to be released can be challenging for creative people with alter egos of a Freight Train and a Rabbit Killer, how did you survive two years of Covid-19, obviously wearing a mask shouldn’t have been a problem.
The band hopes to tour with full four-person band and comprehensive concert promotion.

Jessica Salley is a classically trained singer who made the switch from opera and choral music, to Americana and drum kit, to play in her country western band Cowtown Country Club. Jessica Salley, Thanks for being with us on Wednesday MidDay Medley
We just heard Cowtown Country Club from their self titled album.
Since first appearing on stage in August 2017, Greg Gagnon (guitars), Leah Sproul Pulatie (guitars), Brian Werner (bass), and Jessica Salley (drums) have been delighting audiences as Cowtown Country Club with their sometimes surprising take on country and western executed with glittering guitars and 24-karat vocal harmonies. At once both deeply familiar and excitingly fresh, Cowtown Country Club has a reputation for their original interpretations of classic country and western swing, plus a signature brand of countrified covers – re-imaginings of pop hits.
Cowtown Country Club has performed on The Ink Stage for the Plaza Art Fair, Briarfest, the Crossroads Music Festival, Downtown KC’s Art in the Loop concert series, Junkfest in Omaha NE, Arapaho Valley Ranch Blue Grass Campout, Lansing DAZE, Old Shawnee Days Festival and invited Saturday night guests on Stage 5 at the Walnut Valley Music Festival in Winfield, KS. The quartet was also a featured band at The OPKS Botanical Gardens Annual STEMS Gala, and have appeared at Westport Saloon, Knuckleheads, KC Bier Co, Martin City Brewing Co, Bier Station, Stockyards Brewing, The RINO, and at private events across the metro area and live on KKFI community radio.
Cowtown Country Club uses close vocal harmonies, classic western swing tunes and a special brand of countrified covers to create an unforgettable music experience for audiences. Cowtown Country Club mixes their love of classic sounds and irreverent musical fun in every song and every performance.
Cowtown Country Club play the Green Guitar Folk Series, Saturday, April 30, 2022, at 7:00 PM, in Lenexa, Kansas.
Greg Gagnon on Guitars & Crooning – Greg “I can B-bend that” Gagnon is a Kansas City native. His philosophy is “If something is worth doing, it’s worth overdoing.” And by something, he means guitars, booze, and glitter. When he can pull himself away from tinkering on guitars and antique amps in the basement, Greg comes up with crazy covers and original versions of classic western-swing tunes for the club to play.
Jessica “Jessie” Salley on Drums & High Notes – Jessica didn’t have to be dragged kicking and screaming away from singing opera to join the club, but she did need some convincing about picking up the drums. Now, she couldn’t be happier to lay down that western groove and sing songs that make you wish you had a beer to cry into. After kicking off her boots at the end of the night, Jessie stews up the wild duck she just shot out of the sky. (Playing drums in the trad. of Karen Carpenter, Meg White, Stephanie Williams)
Leah Sproul Pulatie on Guitars & Belting – Leah has been two-steppin’ and boot scootin’ since the tender age of seven, serving as an assistant line dancing instructor to her mom during the heyday of 90’s Country FM. One of her childhood dreams was to one day sing with the house band at those dance halls, a dream that has finally come true with the help of the Club. She hopes you can join them out on the dance floor at one of their shows and might even show you a move or two.
Brian Werner on Bass & Bass – Despite being born and raised in the city, Brian’s collection of pearl snap shirts suggested a different calling. When CCC was formed, he was (al)ready (dressed). This long, tall, Missourian brings the low end to the group, playing, singing bass.
Kristin Hamilton’s new solo album, TOUCH OF BLUE was produced at ShapeNote Studios.

“Main Title Instrumental – It’s Showtime Folks” from: Orig. Motion Picture Soundtrack All That Jazz / Casablanca / December 20, 1979 [WMM’s Adopted Theme Song]
In Honor of 4-20
Cypress Hill– “Insane In the Brain” from: Black Sunday / Ruffhouse – Columbia / July 20, 1993 [“Insane in the Brain” is a 1993 song by American hip hop group Cypress Hill, released as the first single from their second album, Black Sunday (1993). In addition to hitting number one on the US rap chart, the song also was a mainstream hit, reaching number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1993. It earned a gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America and sold 600,000 copies domestically. According to B-Real, the song was actually a diss song aimed at Chubb Rock. The group felt Chubb had ridiculed their style on his 1992 album, I Gotta Get Mine Yo. The song is built around many samples: a drum break from organist George Semper’s cover version of Lee Dorsey’s “Get Out of My Life, Woman”; a sample of James Brown grunting from the opening of his song “Say It Loud – I’m Black and I’m Proud”; a sample of the line “insane in the brain” from Cypress Hill’s own song “Hole in the Head”; the opening keyboard from Sly and the Family Stone’s “Life”, a sample of the line “I think I’m going crazy” from the Youngbloods’ “All Over the World (La La)” which concludes the track and the most prominent sample throughout the song, a repeating sample of, in which DJ Muggs initially claimed, a pitched blues guitar. // Cypress Hill is an American hip hop group from South Gate, California. They are the first hip-hop group to have sold multi-platinum and platinum albums, having sold over 20 million albums worldwide. They are considered to be among the main progenitors of West Coast and 1990s hip hop. The group has been critically acclaimed for their first five albums. All of the group members advocate for medical and recreational use of cannabis in the United States. In 2019, Cypress Hill became the first hip hop group to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. // Senen Reyes (also known as Sen Dog) and Ulpiano Sergio Reyes (also known as Mellow Man Ace) are brothers born in Pinar del Río, Cuba. In 1971, their family immigrated to the United States and initially lived in South Gate, California. In 1988, the two brothers teamed up with New York City native Lawrence Muggerud (also known as DJ Muggs, previously in a rap group named 7A3) and Louis Freese (also known as B-Real) to form a hip-hop group named DVX (Devastating Vocal Excellence). The band soon lost Mellow Man Ace to a solo career, and changed their name to Cypress Hill, after a street in South Gate.]

She needed to see married women kissing and playing with their kids.” The music video highlights people in LGBTQ relationships and has a predominantly queer cast. // Oladokun’s song “Mercy” follows in the same theme, describing her experience as a Black person in the United States, while the single “I See America” criticizes systemic racism. The Black Creatures – “Negative Zero” from: “Negative Zero” – Single / Center Cut Records / April 2, 2021 [remixed, remastered] [All proceeds from this track go to the Tamir Rice Foundation. Info at: http://www.tamirericefoundation.org. The Black Creatures are Jade Green & Xavier Martin. This song was originally on the December 6, 2017 release, SEE NO EVIL The song was recently re-recorded. Band member Xavier Martin told us that, “Everything was done from the ground up. Remixing, rerecording, mastering, etc.” The Black Creatures wanted to released this as a single and video as a “part-two” to their earlier single and video release for “wretched (it goes)”, which was originally released on The Black Creatures 2019 album Wild Echoes. The video for “Negative Zero” picks up where the video for “Wretched (It Goes)” left off, “so there is a conceptual thread between the two,” says Patrick Sprehe of Center Cut Records. All music produced, arranged, recorded, and performed by The Black Creatures. Engineering and Mastering by J. Ashley Miller aka Jametatone. The Black Creatures write, “We talk about it all the time, but ‘Negative Zero’ is the best example of this phenomenon; sometimes we come together with pieces of a song that fit together so perfectly the results surprise even us. So, conceiving a video that acutely paralleled the direness of the message was a huge deal for us. The process happened in a similarly fluid stride that furthered our awareness of the unfortunate necessity of art, media, and dialogue that exist in the same sphere. With that in mind, there’s some positivity we hope fans of The Black Creatures can also takeaway from this music video. // We had been sitting on this video for a while, already finished filming and that whole process was very fun and literally nourishing (because we got Fannie’s West African Cuisine to celebrate after filming). Like past music video releases, we worked with Rondevu Productions on this video—and it was a careful little gathering! We all got our ‘negative’ COVID test results within 48 hours of each other and said, ‘Okay, let’s go to the lake like a family,’ and we did. We spent two days filming on a freezing cold lake, dancing on cryptic constructions, and being outside way late at night. // We have set up this release to directly fund The Tamir Rice Foundation, founded by mother Samaria Rice. We also encourage others who can, to give to something that is centered around Black life.” // After being signed to Center Cut Records the label remastered and reissued Wild Echoes and began releasing singles. “Wild Echoes” was #2 in WMM’s 119 Favorite Releases of 2019 (Albums & EPs). Since the release of ”Wild Echoes” the band has released seven entirely new songs, nearly one per month, all posted to their bandcamp page. The Black Creatures fuse dark-pop hip-hop, soul, jazz, and electronic music with elements from science fiction to tell inter-dimensional stories of love, community, life, culture, history. 10:35 – Interview with Jade Green & Xavier Martin of The Black Creaturesand Patrick Sprehe of Center Cut Records
Jade Green & Xavier Martin of The Black Creatures began working together in 2013. The Black Creatures blur the boundaries of hip-hop, dance, R&B, soul, and EDM, telling stories of real life, and the struggle for equality. Jade’s incredible vocals reveal her background in opera, and her honest lyrics are both personal and political. Jade can interpret soul, jazz, hiphop, and pop. Xavier Martin started music as a violinist, and has transitioned into a co-songwriter, producer, beat-maker, keyboardist, vocalist, engineer, and style maker. Their breakthrough album, WILD ECHOES, that was re-released and re-mastered by Center Cut Records in 2020 and named Album Of The Year from The Pitch Magazine. The Black Creatures recently were the recipients of the Charlotte Street Foundation 2022 Generative Performing Artist Fellowship Grant and Award. The Black Creatures play recordBar, Sunday, April 24, at 7:00 PM with Saving Miles Lemon, North By North, and Quite Frankly. Jade Green & Xavier Martin welcome back to Wednesday MidDay Medley.
Mark’s brief review: “Being named “Album of The Year” from The Pitch Kansas City was the recognition this young band deserved, because there is really no other band in Kansas City creating incredibly beautiful and painful protest songs in multi genre styles of beats, vocal styles, textures. The immediate personal and poetic lyrics of Jade Green and tribal, dance floor and soulful beats and melodies of Xavier bring the listener into a multicultural, mixed, gender fluid, soul celebration of life and an honest indictment of the racist, homophobic, and sexist world they are navigating through to survive. Listen carefully to these young music makers, they are wise beyond their years. They sound beautiful and speak the truth to power. They are beautiful. They are The Black Creatures.”
The Black Creatures released their single “Negative Zero” on April 2, 2021, with a music video that was the continuation of a story from their earlier single and video release for “wretched (it goes),” (originally released on The Black Creatures 2019/2020 album Wild Echoes.) Wild Echoes landed at #2 on WMM’s 119 Best Recordings of 2019, after being remastered and reissued by CenterCut Records in 2020.
All proceeds from The Black Creatures single “Negative Zero” go to the Tamir Rice Foundation. Info at: http://www.tamirericefoundation.org. This song was originally released on the December 6, 2017 album, SEE NO EVIL The song was re-recorded. Band member Xavier Martin told us that, “Everything was done from the ground up. Remixing, rerecording, mastering, etc.”
We also encourage others who can, to give to something that is centered around Black life.”
The Black Creatures’ most recent single, “True Friends” was released Friday, September 17, 2021 through Center Cut Records is the first from their upcoming album BY THY HAND produced by Xavier, and written by Jade Green and Xavier. The single was Mastered by Collin Jordan (Xiu Xiu, Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco). The Black Creatures will be releasing more singles and videos leading up to the release of BY THY HAND next year.
Per Jade, “This song is not only a celebration, but an offering of gratitude to the support system that I’ve been lucky to have in my life. Especially during this time where everybody feels so isolated, so far removed from community and from collaboration, this song is a cheeky way of telling listeners ‘you deserve loyalty, you deserve love – did you forget who the F you are?!'” The Black Creatures – Upcoming Shows:

From Center Cut Records Promo Materials: The Black Creatures make a point to blur the lines of genre while maintaining a recognizable cohesion; oftentimes blending contemporary styles of pop, hip-hop, dance, R&B, EDM and soul with cinematic and storytelling sci-fi/fantasy elements and themes. With the complex and creative approach The Black Creatures take to their art, a diverse audience regularly flocks to their gripping and intensely enchanting performances.
Representing the strange land of Kansas City, Missouri, Jade Green and Xavier began working together around the end of 2013 after meeting on-line talking about cosmetics. After Jade stumbled upon Xavier’s SoundCloud, they asked if they could put their vocals on it, and this led to future collaborations with no more than the intention to dabble. They couldn’t stop and eventually dubbed the project The Black Creatures.
Both Jade & Xavier write and perform vocals, with Xavier at the helm of production and composition. Jade Green has a vocal background in opera and a penchant for theatrics, and both are the foundation of their ever-evolving approach to writing and performing in The Black Creatures. While the instrumentals may set the tone for the show, Jade’s voice captivates the audience from beginning to end. Originally a violinist, Xavier unfurled into a producer and vocalist, maintaining the same air of intrigue and mystery throughout his compositions and performances in The Black Creatures.
After releasing Wild Echoes in the fall of 2020, the record received Album Of The Year from The Pitch Magazine, along with high praise from around the world for the four released singles and accompanying videos. “Wretched (It Goes)” was featured in the NPR Live Sessions “Songs For Change” when The Black Creatures were selected as one of 12 national artists, and included in 90.9 The Bridge’s Top 100 singles along with their song “D’ummm” which was in heavy rotation in the winter. Nuance Magazine wrote, “The Black Creatures take their musical talents and use them in such a way that forces listeners to not only tap their foot to a catchy tune, but pay attention and feel something about what is going on in the world around them. Tackling fascism, police brutality, and the deep-rooted effects of slavery in a rhythmic fashion is one thing. Simultaneously making it a good listen is another. However, The Black Creatures make it happen.”
The Black Creatures are a multifaceted music duo from Kansas City. Gleefully playing with elements of soul, hip-hop, and EDM, they’re here to tell interdimensional stories – through all-original, lyric-heavy songs and live performances. They share real stories from a less-explored perspective, while others are spun from fantastical vantage points. Influenced by neo-soul sirens like Erykah Badu and Alicia Keys, wordsmiths like Da Brat and Tech N9ne, and composers a la Daft Punk and Robert Glasper, they make music that defies genre and tradition in an effort to break generational curses. The idea is that society’s hexes, long bound up by the threads of anti-black repression, insincerity, and envy, can be uncrossed by doing what has not been done before. They aim to honor the past, celebrate the present, and transcend the expectations of the future by creating consistently unique songs, videos, images, and interactive live performances.
Xavier Martin is DJ/Writer/Producer/Rapper/Singer at The Black Creatures
Jade Green performs with: Arquesta Del SolSoul. a Kansas City-based music collective featuring 3 musicians who worked together in Hearts of Darkness. They call themselves: African Futurist Genre Killerz from the Middle of the Map bringing an innovative multidimensional sound inspired by our founding musical ancestors to decolonize and time bend indigenous sounds of the Caribbean, Latin America, West, Central, and Southern Africa.” Members include Les Izmore, Jessica Ayala, Brad Williams, Jade Green, Chalis O’Neal, Irving Graham, Ernest Melton, Andres Ramirez, Fabian Prado.
The Black Creatures will be releasing more singles and videos leading up to the release of By Thy Hand, and they have a full plate of performances in the coming months

The Sexy Accident Discography
New Roulette (2022) Kansas City’s The Sexy Accident plays mercurial pop of brains and heart “driven by catchy melodies and smart, real-life lyric writing.” (The Big Takeover) When the pandemic struck in 2020, songwriter and bandleader Jesse Kates built a home studio and began producing New Roulette remotely. Josh Williams performed and recorded Ramone Hall’s drum parts. Ryan Leip flew in guitars for Jesse to re-amp. Jamie Pratt sang at her father’s suburban home and Mack McKinney played bass from Jesse’s back yard. For more Kansas City flavor, New Roulette’s lead track, I’m Feeling Dancy, features Sisterbot and the EP includes a cover of Wind Flirter by True Lions. New Roulette comprises six tracks and releases on 23 April 2022.
Rabarbaro (2020) The band’s seventh long-player, Rabarbaro, released on 14 April 2020 during the year of the band’s fifteenth anniversary. Produced, engineered and mixed by longtime collaborator and pacific northwest legend Steve Fisk (Car Seat Headrest, Low, Unwound, Nirvana, Pigeonhed) in Kansas City and Tacoma, Rabarbaro comprises eleven of songwriter Jesse Kates’ most dark, dynamic and sensual songs, living up to the intensity of the album’s namesake adult beverage: a bittersweet, intoxicating (30% ABV) variety of Italian amaro distilled from Chinese rhubarb with zest and cardamom.
Champagne Babycakes (2016) Champagne Babycakes is the world’s first album released as a card game. Each copy of Champagne Babycakes includes a complete game deck of 54 cards illustrated by Gavin Snider and twelve songs written by Sexy Accident bandleader Jesse Kates. Champagne Babycakes was produced by Steve Fisk
The songs of Champagne Babycakes are hefty yet compact, like a deck of cards, and reflect Kates’ mainstay themes of romance and family life. Sonically, the album echoes and amplifies features of The Sexy Accident’s prior work, including the groove of Ninja Ninja Fight Darth Vader, the layering of Lavender 3, the squall of Mantoloking, and the dynamics of Kinda Like Fireworks.
Lavender 3 (2013) Like Champagne Babycakes, The Sexy Accident’s fifth release isn’t a typical record. To deliver tactile pleasure with the ease of downloads, the band created a pop album as a hardback book. Lavender 3 is a nine-inch square, 48-page, silver cloth-covered, smythe-sewn, silk-screened book brimming with lyrics, paintings, illustrations, interviews and commentary, including works by Blue Gallery painter Bernal Koehrsen and poet Jim Daniels. Lavender 3 comprises twelve love songs marinated in strings, keyboards and alternate-tuned guitars. The tracks guest star Laurel Parks and Sascha Groschang of string ensemble The Wires, and Sean Nelson of Harvey Danger, among others.
Origins In 2005, after years of spinning wordless tales with Pittsburgh, PA-based instrumental band Whitford, Jesse Kates decided to sing. Jesse had recently relocated to Kansas City for a day job and needed co-conspirators. A search of nearby cubicles revealed Dan Weller, the bass-playing spouse of a market researcher, and Craig used his list to find Billy Brown, the band’s first drummer. Musicians assembled, Jesse began to write. A graduate of Carnegie Mellon University’s Creative Writing program, Jesse remains influenced by a mantra of the faculty – have the courage to be clear – to this day. As the only permanent band member, The Sexy Accident remains unavoidably Jesse-centric, yet the sonics transform from album to album, showcasing the strengths of each lineup.

The album charted at number 6 on the Billboard 200 and number 2 on the Top R&B Albums. The singles “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World”, “I Hate U”, and “Gold” charted on the Billboard Hot 100 at numbers 3, 12, and 88 respectively. // The Gold Experience sold 500,000 copies in the United States and peaked at number six on the Billboard 200, failing to meet the record label’s commercial expectations. According to biographer Jason Draper, it may have undersold because Prince was losing touch with younger listeners and also because his contractual dispute with Warner Bros. Records overshadowed the album’s promotion, which he had done well before it was released. // Nonetheless, The Gold Experience was a success with critics. Melody Maker called it Prince’s best record in years, while Vibe said it was his best since Sign o’ the Times in 1987. In The Village Voice, Robert Christgau wrote that it showcased not only the unbridled artistry displayed on his other records but also “a renewal. It’s as sex-obsessed as ever, only with more juice—’Shhh’ and ‘319’ especially pack the kind of porno jolt sexy music rarely gets near and hard music never does.” He believed its best songs, specifically “Endorphinmachine” and “P Control”, “funk and rock as outrageously and originally as anything he’s ever recorded”. Jon Pareles was less enthusiastic in The New York Times, finding most of the songs to be minor successes and calling it “a proficient album, not a startling one; most of its songs are variations and retreads of previous Prince efforts.” // The Gold Experience was voted the 30th best album of 1995 in the Pazz & Jop, an annual poll of American critics published by The Village Voice. Christgau, the poll’s supervisor, ranked it 10th best in his own year-end list. In a retrospective review, Keith Harris from Blender cited The Gold Experience as the best album Prince recorded in the 1990s, “a mix of newly stripped-down funk and delicate balladry that reasserts his dynamic range”.// Several people speculated that the song “Billy Jack Bitch” was written about a Minneapolis Star Tribune gossip columnist known as “CJ”. Prince denied the song was about the columnist when CJ herself interviewed him.
[On Record Store Day on Saturday, April 23, 2022, The Gold Experience will be reissued for Record Store Day 2022. The scheduled reissue is a replica of the original translucent gold expanded, limited promo album from 1995. This is the first time the complete album will be reissued following the legal battle over “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World”. ]

Next week on Wednesday, April 27 we welcome back to the show Brenton Cook of Haymaker Records and the band: Freight Train Rabbit Killer. Freight Train Rabbit Killer will be releasing their new album, HAMMER OF JUDGEMENT on April 30, 2022 on vinyl
from Haymaker Records who write: “The album was recorded during the Hammer of Judgment Recording Sessions back in April 2019. Yes, it took 3 years for this album to be released. There were hurdles along the way, from pressing plant delays to global pandemics – but here we are and it’s totally worth the wait. The Hammer of Judgment recording session was a one-of-a-kind pseudo-live studio album, utilizing an interactive crowd of dedicated fans experiencing the recording process first-hand with all of the bells and whistles of a professional recording studio (isolated tracking, overdubs, post-production mixing, etc.). Thanks to GFM Modern Recording in Blue Springs, Missouri for the studio access and engineering work and Andrew Crowley of Organica Recording for the engineering, mixing, and mastering. The album will be released on black vinyl as well as a limited run of 200 copies on blue vinyl.” More info at http://www.haymakerrecords.net

Performing the bulk of instrumentation himself, this new record mines the eclectic influences of his performance history to produce bold and varied arrangements within a song cycle that contemplates the ever-shifting dynamics of friendships old and new as we age and our lives fray and intertwine in turn.
Fritz Hutchison is a multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter based in Kansas City. He released his debut album Wide Wild Acres in March 2020, receiving positive reviews in the US, Australia, the UK and the Netherlands. Performing nearly all of the instrumentation himself, the album is a warm collection of americana musings and earnest rock and roll, channeling the contemplative spirit of the American Midwest through his many years as a backing musician in genres as varied as Reggae/Ska, Honky Tonk, Jazz Fusion and Indie Rock.
Since Wide Wild Acres, he has released the sweet and sad country single “All the Way From Here (Happy Holidays)” in January 2021 and the unhinged rock rave-up “Zack Attack!” in March.

Jenna’s voice is unique. Her harmonies in recordings with Unfit Wives, Elexa Dawson, Jenna & Martin, rise above in their authentic, beautiful, honest delivery. Her voice has been compared to Iris DeMent.
Jenna Rae and Martin Farrell Jr. met in Winfield, Kansas at Walnut Valley Bluegrass Music Festival. Both were playing banjo in separate bands at the time and bonded through their love of classic country music.
They started learning Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris duets and quickly realized their voices nested well together. Determined to recreate classic country sounding music in a new way they started collaborating on a genre they call “Cosmic Western”. This music incorporates bluegrass techniques, gospel harmonies, rock rhythms and experimental classic country sounds.
The duo performs as “Jenna & Martin” wearing coordinated outfits and often times sharing the stage with their standard poodle, Roy Rogers. Past plays:
We played Deadeye on WMM back on August 2, 2017 and the song “Nothin’ At All” released on July 31, 2016. Produced by Deadeye. 11:02 – Interview with Kristie Stremel
Described as “Joan Jett & Tom Petty’s love child,” and armed with her guitar, fueled by coffee, and over 100 published songs, a few books, multiple videos, singer, songwriter, producer, and rock & roll mom, Kristie Stremel has toured all over the world and shared the stages with so many bands, comedians, performance artists, and rock and rollers. Kristie Stremel grew up in a western Kansas off the beaten track for most. She learned to play her father’s guitar with Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings songs that he taught her. In 1986, at age 12, she entertained her family with her first electric guitar. At 15, she caught Joan Jett at the county fair and decided to put together a band; it performed at the local skating rink and school dances. Transplanted to Kansas City the summer before high school, she got serious about writing songs. By 21, Stremel was a crowd favorite in one of Kansas City’s most promising bands, Frogpond, which released a 1996 album produced by Everclear’s Art Alexakis. The next year, her growing stockpile of songs led her to form her own band. She named it after the Interstate 70 off-ramp that led to her hometown, Exit 159. The band release one EP and one full length and toured the West Coast twice and received the Pitch newspaper’s prestigious Kansas City/Lawrence Area Music Award for both Best New Band and Band of the Year. After the band broke up Kristie embarked on her solo career. She won another Pitch Music Award for Best Female Vocalist, and signed with a Springfield, Missouri label Slewfoot Records (and one EP) and released three albums and an EP, produced by the late great Springfield, Missouri legend Lou Whitney. After Lou’s passing Kristie created her own recording studio and her own lable and began producing her own recordings. In 2015 Kristie released, Wildflowers, a children’s book of songs and poems with an accompanying CD recording inspired by her son Charlie. In 2016 Kristie released the single “Orlando (Keep Dancing).” in response to the mass shooting at Pulse, a gay nightcub in Orlando Florida. Her solo albums and single releases continued including a reunion with Exit 159 and on November 13, 2020, Kristie Stremel released SKY CREW her eleventh full length release. Kristie joins us today to share details about her new band, Prairie Brigade who will release their debut album FAILSAFE on April 12, 2022.
