The 116 Best Recordings of 2016
(Part 2 of 4)

Wednesday MidDay Medley presented part-two, of our four-week special: The 116 Best Recordings of 2016. Based on playlists of this little ole radio show, we’ve compiled representative tracks from our favorite full-length and EP recordings of the year. We realize that these “Best of” lists can seem very subjective, however we ask that you please accept our list as a celebration of the year of music.

In 2016 we’ve played over 1000 different songs on the show, and from over 300 New & MidCoastal Releases. Over 40 of the bands and artists in our “Best of” list have actually joined us live and/or performed in our 90.1 FM studios. We’ve interviewed over 200 local and national guests. 70 of the representative recordings on our “Best of” list were MidCoastal Releases, produced by artists based here in the area. It’s all good!

Tune into 90.1 FM, Wednesdays in December, on the 21st, and 28th. We’ll be packing 8-hours of radio with music that represent: The 116 of Best Recordings of 2016!

Warhol thought ‘her poems were good, really good, half poetry and half comedy.’ In later years, Ingrid Von Scheven fell on hard times, struggling with a drug problem and eventually ending up in Kingston, New York, where she worked in sweater factory. She disappeared one day in December 1986, after leaving her apartment to buy cigarettes. although the Kingston police announced ‘there’s a clear possibility of foul play and we are intensifying our investigation,’ she was never found. Initially singing locally at churches, appearing on a weekly radio show, the Staples scored a hit in 1956 with “Uncloudy Day” for the Vee-Jay label. When Mavis graduated from what is now Paul Robeson High School in 1957, The Staple Singers took their music on the road. By the mid-1960s The Staple Singers, inspired by Pops’ close friendship with Martin Luther King, Jr., became the spiritual and musical voices of the civil rights movement. They covered contemporary pop hits with positive messages, including Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall” and a version of Stephen Stills’ “For What It’s Worth”. Livin’ on a High Note was produced by M. Ward the album features songs written specifically for Staples by Nick Cave, Justin Vernon, tUnE-yArds, Neko Case, Aloe Blacc, and others. In an interview with Bob Boilen on All Songs Considered, Bird described how getting married had changed his writing style on this album:“”Knowing that you’re going to be with someone for a long time definitely changes [the way you write], often because you’re sitting in the same room with them as you’re writing, and when you’re sitting on the couch and you know it’s not going to last, you might … have to … encrypt … things. And when you don’t have to do that anymore it might change your writing in that sense.” Fiona Apple was his first choice to appear on the single “Left Handed Kisses”, and he contacted her through mutual friends. The track’s recording session was, according to Bird, “a long whiskey-fueled night.”]

18. (100.) Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings – “I’m Still Here”
from: Miss Sharon Jones (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) / Daptone Records / Aug 19, 2016)
[Grom the film directed by Academy Award winning director, Barbara Kopple. On the eve of the release of her band’s new album, internationally recognized soul singer Sharon Jones was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Tour dates were cancelled, the release of the group’s fifth album, Give the People What They Want, was pushed back and Sharon entered into a fight for her life and career. MISS SHARON JONES! intimately follows this intense and courageous year in Sharon’s life. I was able to see this band twice, and the last time was with my dear friend Necia R Gamby in Lawrence, at Liberty Hall, pressed up to the front of the stage, in awe of Sharon Jones, and the fabulous Dap Kings. It was March 8, 2014. Sharon and I became Facebook friends that night when she shared my album of pictures on her own page. During the show Sharon locked eyes with Necia, and then pulled Necia onto the stage to sing a duet of “Heard It Through The Grapevine.” A year later, during the screening of her documentary “Miss Sharon Jones” at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, Jones revealed that her cancer had returned, and that she would be undergoing chemotherapy again. In November, she suffered a stroke while watching the 2016 United States presidential election results and another the following day. Jones remained alert and lucid during the initial period of her hospital stay, jokingly claiming that the news of Donald Trump’s victory was responsible for her stroke. She died on November 18, 2016, in Cooperstown, New York, aged 60. Sharon Lafaye Jones was born May 4, 1956 and died this year on November 18, 2016. She was an American soul and funk singer. KAlthough shoe collaborated with Lu Reed, David Byrne and others, she is best known as lead singer of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, a soul and funk band based in Brooklyn, New York. Jones experienced breakthrough success relatively late in life, releasing her first record when she was 40 years old. In 2014, Jones was nominated for her first Grammy, in the category Best R&B Album, for Give the People What They Want. Jones was born in Augusta, Georgia, the daughter of Ella Mae Price Jones and Charlie Jones, living in adjacent North Augusta, South Carolina. Jones was the youngest of six children; her siblings are Dora, Charles, Ike, Willa and Henry. Jones’s mother raised her deceased sister’s four children as well as her own. She moved the family to New York City when Sharon was a young child. As children, she and her brothers would often imitate the singing and dancing of James Brown. Her mother happened to know Brown, who was also from Augusta.Jones grew up in the Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. In 1975, she graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn. She attended Brooklyn College. A regular gospel singer in church, Jones often entered talent shows backed by local funk bands in the early 1970s. Session work then continued with backing vocals, often credited to Lafaye Jones, but in the absence of any recording contract as a solo singer, she spent many years working as a corrections officer at Rikers Island and as an armored car guard for Wells Fargo, until receiving a mid-life career break in 1996 after she appeared on a session backing the soul and deep funk legend Lee Fields. Sharon Jones was part of the very beginning of Daptone Records Daptone Records’ first release was a full-length album by Sharon Jones. A new band, the Dap-Kings, was formed from the former members of the Soul Providers and the Mighty Imperials. Some of the musicians went on to record for Lehman’s Soul Fire label, while some formed the Budos Band, an Afro-beat band. From the original Soul Providers, Roth (also known as Bosco Mann) on bass, guitarist and emcee Binky Griptite, percussionist Fernando Velez, trumpet player Anda Szilagyi and organist Earl Maxton were joined by original Mighty Imperials saxophonist Leon Michels and drummer Homer Steinweiss, plus Neal Sugarman from Sugarman 3, to form The Dap-Kings. Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, the released the album Dap Dippin’ with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings in May of 2002, , for which they received immediate attention and acclaim from enthusiasts, DJs and collectors. Next they released, Naturally (2005), 100 Days, 100 Nights (2007) and I Learned the Hard Way (2010). They are seen by many as the spearhead of a revival of soul and funk.]

Tidy Hippy is a Kansas City based band formed by Hannah Copeland of KCUR 89.3 FM, and Matthew Dunehoo of Doris Henson, Baby Teardrops, and Loose Park. Hannah Copeland told Bryan Voell of the Johnson County Library, “Our songs usually start with a Matt playing a lick on his guitar at band practice. I will add a beat, and if the beat and melody feel right, we’ll keep jamming until we have made parts to a complete song. We usually add lyrics after we write our songs. My lyrics are mostly narrative, and Matt uses lots of wordplay with subtle themes. I wrote the lyrics to “Death Accessory,” an anthem calling lawmakers to allow Midwestern cities to make their own gun laws that fit the needs of their city, not their mostly rural state.. We sing together, separately, and in harmony.” Matthew Dunehoo added, in this same Johnson County Library website piece written by Btyan Voell, “Getting to practice in Hannah’s parents’ home has been an incredible luxury, especially after living in NYC and practicing in overpriced inhospitable 3’x3′ ovens. There’s always TP and her mom is an awesome cook. I always want to just crank tunes out willy-nilly without condemning them to death too soon. Hannah seems mostly on board.”]

Over 40 of the bands and artists in our “Best of” list have actually joined us live and/or performed in our 90.1 FM studios. Marion Merritt’s Favorite Musical Releases of 2016

#5. – Vivien Goldman – Resolutionary (Songs 1979-1982) /Staubgold Germany/May 20, 2016

7. Vivien Goldman – “P. A. Dub”
from: Resolutionary (Songs 1979-1982) / Staubgold Germany / May 20, 2016
[British journalist, writer and musician. She was born in London, August 25, 1954, the child of two German-Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany. Goldman wrote for the music magazines NME, Sounds and Melody Maker about reggae, punk and post-punk. She was a member of The Flying Lizards, shared a flat with fellow NME journalist and The Pretenders singer Chrissie Hynde. Goldman lived in Paris for a year and a half, where she was a member of new wave duo Chantage, which gained modest fame in France. She released the “Dirty Washing EP” in 1981, with tracks produced by John Lydon and Adrian Sherwood. The EP appeared first on Ed Bahlman’s iconic 99 Records imprint on June 3, 1981. In August 1981, two of the tracks from the EP, “Launderette” and “Private Armies,” were issued as a 7″ single in the UK. Later the song “Launderette” was included on Gomma Records’ “Anti NY” compilation and the Chicks On Speed-produced Girl Monster collection. In that year she also contributed vocals (on the track “Private Armies,” which is actually “Private Armies Dub,” or “P.A. Dub,” from the EP) to the New Age Steppers’ self-titled debut.]

#4. Betty Harris – Soul Jazz Records Presents Betty Harris: The Lost Queen of New Orleans Soul / Soul Jazz Records / 2016

8. Betty Harris – “What’d I Do Wrong”
from: Soul Jazz Records Presents Betty Harris: The Lost Queen of New Orleans Soul / Soul Jazz Records / 2016
[In 1963, after being in the music business for a few years, Betty Harris recorded a slowed down version of Solomon Burke’s hit of the year before, “Cry to Me”, produced by the original record’s producer, Bert Berns, and released on the Jubilee record label. Taken at a slower pace, Harris’ rendition turned the song into a Billboard Hot 100 number 23 hit, with a corresponding number 10 listing on the R&B chart, and it became a deep soul classic. A total of three further singles including a reissue of “Cry to Me” were released on Jubilee, also produced by Bert Berns, with “His Kiss”, which was released on January 4, 1964, another deep soul ballad, reaching the lower part of the Billboard Pop and R&B charts. In 1964, Betty Harris switched record labels to Sansu, a New Orleans label, where she was produced by Allen Toussaint. Her recording with Sansu produced ten singles. Of those, only “Nearer to You”, an atmospheric, dramatic soul ballad, now considered one of the milestones of deep soul, achieved U.S. national chart success (Billboard number 85). However, practically all of her recordings for Sansu, uptempo tunes and ballads alike, featuring Toussaint’s raw yet sophisticated Southern soul arrangements behind Harris’ rich, distinctive vocal, are considered prime specimens of the classic soul era; some notable recordings were “I’m Evil Tonight”, a beat ballad favored in Northern soul circles; “I Don’t Want to Hear It”, “Show it” and “Twelve Red Roses”, stirring up-tempo tracks; “Can’t Last Much Longer” and “What’d I Do Wrong”, emotive deep soul ballads]

#3. Lee Moses – Time and Place / Maple Records/ 1971 [Light In The Attic / 2016]

9. Lee Moses – “Hey Joe”
from: Time and Place / Maple Records/ 1971 [Light In The Attic / 2016]
[Lee Moses was born March 13, 1941, in Atlanta, Georgia, and attended Booker T. Washington High School. In the late 1950s he formed his first band, the Showstoppers. They became a popular live act in the Atlanta area, and were at one time the house band at the Royal Peacock club. Moses moved to New York City in the mid-1960s, where he worked as a session musician as well as recording with Johnny Brantley, who co-wrote and produced his first single, “My Adorable One”, in 1965. In 1967 he recorded three singles – all commercially unsuccessful – for the Musicor label, including “Bad Girl” and an instrumental version of The Four Tops’ “Reach Out, I’ll Be There”. He also recorded a version of “Dark End of the Street”, issued by Gates Records probably in 1969. Moses’ guitar style has been described as “funky” and likened to that of Jimi Hendrix, a contemporary of his on the club scene of the mid-1960s. He has also been praised for his “rough and powerful deep soul singing style”. In 1970, he released a single, “Time and Place”, on the Maple label, a subsidiary of All Platinum Records. This was followed by a nine-track LP of the same name, again produced by Brantley, which contained his versions of several classic songs of the period including “Hey Joe”. The album featured several members of The Ohio Players, as well as Moses’ own band, the Diciples (sic). Although the album has since been described as “a revered and highly sought-after lost treasure for deep soul fans and collectors”, it was a commercial failure at the time. Moses also worked with fellow Atlanta native The Mighty Hannibal on his 1973 album, Truth.[1] He returned to Atlanta in the early 1970s, and continued to perform locally, but did not record again. He died there from lung cancer in 1997.]

#2. Charlie Hilton – Palana / Captured Tracks / 2016

10. Charlie Hilton – “WHY”
from: Palana / Captured Tracks / 2016
[Charlie Hilton, is known for her work in the band Blouse, and has now forged a new one with her debut solo album, Palana. The album’s title itself is a nod to Hilton’s given Sanskrit name, an identity she shed completely after high school in favor of the androgynous “Charlie,” and Palana’s overarching theme can be summed up by a quote from Hermann Hesse’s Steppenwolf, a phrase Hilton cites as a personal mantra: “Man is not by any means of fixed and enduring form…he is much more an experiment and a transition….”]

#1. Fantastic Negrito – The Last Days of Oakland / Blackball Universe / 2016

11. Fantastic Negrito – “In the Pines”
from: The Last Days of Oakland / Blackball Universe / 2016
[Fantastic Negrito was raised in an orthodox Muslim household. His father was a Somali-Caribbean immigrant who mostly played traditional African music. When, at the age of 12, Negrito’s family moved from Massachusetts to Oakland, California. Oakland in 1970s was a million miles from Negrito’s conservative childhood. He went from Arab chants to Funkadelic in one day. By the time he was 20, Negrito had taught himself to play every instrument he could get his hands on. He was recording music, and after some difficulties on the streets he packed his bags and headed to LA, armed with a demo on cassette. Negrito signed with a million dollar deal at Interscope. The record deal was a disaster. Gangsta rap was ruling the airwaves and Negrito was in the wrong place at the wrong era. Negrito came out of the deal with a failed album and his confidence gutted. In 2000, Negrito was in a near fatal car accident that put him in a coma. For four weeks it was touch and go. Because his muscles atrophied while bedridden, he had to go through months of frustrating physical therapy to regain use of his legs. Rods were placed throughout his body. And worst of all, his playing hand was mutilated. Back in Oakland, Negrito forgot about life as a musician. He got married, he planted vegetables, raised his own chickens, and made money growing weed. He also settled into being a man, on his own, clear of the distractions of wanting to be a star. And then his son Kyu was born. He began recording without the hindrances that come with chasing trends. Negrito turned to the original DNA of all American music, the Blues. The beating life had given him primed him to channel his literal and musical forefathers: the Blues musicians of the Delta]

From album notes: Lazlo Szombathy is a peripheral character in the Kurt Vonnegut novel Mother Night, whose inclusion was a nod to the interconnectedness of all actions. Watch what you’re doing: We are all peripheral characters in the Novel of the Galaxy. Wherein Betse Ellis makes the Kansas and Mahavishnu Orchestra dreams of those who have such things come true. That’s the main melody there in the acoustic intro, reharmonized a fifth lower. We know you people love reharmonization. The melody at 1:54 originated as sort of a guitar placeholder, then took on a most macabre flavor when doubled by Betse. The song is in 7/8, but contains exactly one measure of 8/8. Can you spot it? Karin attended school in Barnesville, Ohio and graduated from Barnesville High School in 1984. She then went to Malone College, located in Canton, Ohio, where she met Linford. Sondra Freeman is Director of Promotions and Artist Relations for Midwest Music Foundation, a nonprofit created to support music and musicians in Kansas City and the surrounding areas, founded in 2008 by a collective of musicians and music lovers. The Midwest Music Foundation (MMF) unites and empowers the greater Kansas City music community by providing programs and resources to area musicians through outreach, support, education, and health care opportunities. Sondra is instrumental in MMF’s annual events: Apocalypse Meow, MidCoast Takeover and the MidCoast Takeover fundraiser shows, as well as many other collaborative musical events and fundraisers.

We fell in love with Rachel Mallin‘s September 2014, solo EP release, The Persistence of Vision, that she recorded, mixed, and produced in the basement of her mom’s house in Gladstone, MO when she was 19. Rachel Mallin was sitting in a University of Missouri lecture hall scrambling to complete the last final exam of her sophomore year when she received a text in ALL CAPS from longtime friend and bassist Justin Walker, announcing that her song, “Razorback” was being broadcast on a radio station in her hometown, KC. Then her song “Something Wicked” was included in the compilation series How To Keep Dreaming Volume 1, from The Record Machine released in 2015. This summer, on July 30, Rachel’s 5 piece band, Rachel Mallin and The Wild Type released their debut EP, Degenerate Matters.

from: South Of The Border Moonlight / Maria The Mexican / March 15, 2016
[Second album from Kansas City based band formed by Maria Elena Cuevas, Tess Cuevas, Garrett Nordstrom. Influenced by traditional Mariachi music, Maria The Mexican is a hybrid of Mexican folklore and Rock. For ten years, Teresa and Maria Elena Cuevas performed with Mariachi Estrella founded by their grandmother Teresa Cuevas in 1970. As one of the first all female mariachi bands in the country, Maria Teresa Alonzo Cuevas is a pioneer in the Hispanic musical community. Her band flourished in the 80s but was struck by tragedy when four of the seven members were killed in the Hyatt Skywalk collapse in 1981. Once Teresa recovered she began teaching her grandchildren Mariachi music. In 2000, Teresa and Maria began exploring other genres of music while simultaneously co-directing Mariachi Estrella. Today the fusion of Maria The Mexican is mixed with a touch of blues, soul, funk, and rock n’ roll enhanced by the musical knowledge and sounds of Garrett Nordstrom. With a southwestern flare and melancholy motifs, Maria The Mexican rocks it out in Spanish and English with a host of emotion. More info at: http://www.mariathemexican.com]

16. John Cale – “Maria”
from: Helen of Troy / Island Records / November, 1975
[ Helen of Troy is the sixth studio album by Welsh musician John Cale, released in 1975 by record label Island, his last of three albums for the label. During the sessions Cale cut three other songs: the unreleased covers “Willow Weep for Me” and “God Only Knows”. Another unused track, “Mary Lou”, was released on the compilation album Guts. The album features a cover of “Pablo Picasso” by The Modern Lovers, a song which Cale had produced for the band’s debut album. Helen of Troy was released in November 1975 by Island. Even though the other Island albums were issued in the US (June 1, 1974, Fear, Slow Dazzle, Guts), Helen of Troy was not. It was commonly sold as a UK import all over the US. No singles were released from the album. This album came out without the consent of Cale, who considered that the tapes were not finished. Cale was touring when the album was released. For the spring 1975 tour of Slow Dazzle, he assembled guitarist Chris Spedding alongside Sandy Denny’s previous rhythm section of Pat Donaldson (bass) and Timi Donald (drums). Later that autumn, he toured again with this same line-up for twice as many dates. After shipping the first pressings Island Records replaced the track “Leaving It Up to You” with “Coral Moon”, because the former song mentioned Sharon Tate, wife of film director Roman Polanski, who was murdered in 1969 by the Charles Manson gang (Island never updated the cover or label). Things turned sour, and Cale and Island went their separate ways. The CD version contains both tracks. John Cale explained: “It could have been a great album. I came back from finishing Patti Smith’s Horses and had three days to finish Helen of Troy before I went on Italian tour. I was spending eighteen hours a day in the studio. When I got back, I found the record company had gone ahead and released what amounted to demo tapes. The trouble was that Island had their own ideas of what that album should sound like. They wanted to include songs I don’t particularly like, but it was also an impertinent assumption on my part that I was capable of managing myself. My determination to have Helen of Troy the way I did was not really fair to Island or my management, especially at a time when Island was losing its percentage of the market, which was making everybody very paranoid.”]
