11. Slim Twig – “Fadeout Killer”
from: Thank You For Stickin’ With Twig / Independent / Auust 7, 2015
[5th album by the Toronto based songwriter and producer. Twig has released these previous records among a swath of EP’s, singles and one-offs, displaying in the process a complete disregard for genre or consistency.Thank You For Stickin’ With Twig is to date the most sonically immersive album in Twig’s discography. Where some records have focused explicitly on sample-based songwriting, while others have been completely live- recorded, the new album arrives at a perfectly produced fusion of fidelities. It hovers, glamorously caught between a cloud of obscurant, half-speed tape hiss, and the most stoned Jeff Lynne production you’ve ever heard. Twig flirts here with a variety of vibes, most often opting for a three dimensional approach whereby a warped tape aura is overlaid with colourful, laser-cut keyboard and guitar melodies. A fetishization of analogue texture is married to a digital approach. All the while, we find Twig irreverently raiding classic rock of its symbolism, sexuality, and social ambition for ulterior subversions.]

The band started in 1998 as a duo formed by Haines and Shaw with the name “Mainstream”. After releasing an EP titled Mainstream EP, they changed the band’s name to Metric, after a sound that was programmed by Shaw on his keyboard. In 2001, Winstead and Scott-Key joined them. .]

14. Telekinisis – “Sleep In”
from: Ad Infinitum / Merge Records / September 18, 2015
[4th album, from drummer/songwriter/principal architect Michael Lerner who in just under five years, he has released three critically aclaimed records: Telekinesis! (2009), 12 Desperate Straight Lines (2011), and Dormarion (2013). After touring all over the world, amd sharing stages with great bands, Lerner is newly married and found himself happily ensconced in the home studio he’d assembled in his West Seattle basement. Lerner found himself asking the question of what do you do after the rock and roll dreams you had when you were 19 have all come true? “I went down to the basement,” Lerner recalls, “and started playing the same chords I always play… I just felt like I’d exhausted everything I knew. I was not excited at all. I just could not make another power-pop album.” From the Merge records.com website: “In the movie version of the story, Lerner would stumble on his way down the stairs, hit his head, and wake up in 1983, and the only way he could get back to the present day would be to make a record using available instruments. Then he’d wake in 2015 to discover he’d been in his basement studio all along. And the record he’d made in that strange dream state would turn out to be Ad Infinitum, the most ambitious and assured Telekinesis release to date. stumble on his way down the stairs, hit his head, and wake up in 1983, and the only way he could get back to the present day would be to make a record using available instruments. And the record he’d made in that strange dream state would turn out to be Ad Infinitum, the most ambitious and assured Telekinesis release to date.]

15. Iris DeMent – “From an Airplane”
from: The Trackless Woods / FlariElla / August 7, 2015
[6th studio album from Grammy nominated Iris DeMent who NPR said was considered ”one of the great voices in contemporary popular music.” The Trackless Woods sets 18 poems by acclaimed 20th century Russian poet Anna Akhmatova to life. Hailed as one of Russia’s finest poets, Akhmatova survived the Bolshevik Revolution, both World Wars and Stalin. She lost family, friends and fellow writers to political killings and labor in the gulags. When Iris randomly stumbled upon Akhmatova’s work in a book of poetry a friend sent as a gift, she was immediately taken by the sorrow and burden of the poems, juxtaposed with Akhmatova’s lightness and transcendence in the face of inhumanity. ”Anna’s gift of song is so strong, about alI I had to do was get really quiet and listen,” says Iris. After reading that first poem the melodies began pouring out of her, and before she even fully understood what was driving her, Iris was gathering musicians and friends, including co-producer Richard Bennett (Emmylou Harris, Neil Diamond, Steve Earle), to record ‘The Trackless Woods’ in her living room over a five-day period. The result is a breathtaking pairing of piano and voice in Iris’ style with timeless melodies that are deeply rooted in the American South. The project also fulfilled a long yearned-for desire to connect with her adopted daughter’s culture and history. Iris and her husband Greg Brown adopted their daughter from Siberia in 2005, when she was 6, and she says ”I’d never have made this record were it not for her.”]

[Iris DeMent plays Knuckleheads Saloon, Friday, November 20.]

21. Fly Golden Eagle – “Horse’s Mouth”
from: Quartz / ATO Records / May 12, 2015
[Ben Trimble was raised in Detroit but has Kentucky roots. It was in a Nashville basement that Trimble lost himself in rock ‘n’ roll. He found himself working for a music supervisor with a record collection of 60,000 releases. Ben fell down the vinyl the rabbit spindle hole. He explored: Motown, Blues, Glam rock, Psychedelia, all of the sparks of his inspiration, his musical tree of life, his Detroit roots, his need for expression, the new discovery of a musical community in Nashville. All of these ingredients, were baked together to become Fly Golden Eagle. Trimble says. “I realized that there was a long line of people who had expressed rebellion — both serious and casual — through music. They’d done so in different ways and in different parts of the country.” Joining Ben Trimble are Matt Shaw from Celeste, Texas, on bass; Mitch Jones from Knoxville, Tennessee, on the keyboards; and Richard Harper from Huntsville, Alabama, on drums rounding out this southern psychedelic sonic 4-piece. From the ban’s EPK: “Quartz is a 26-song epic, a collection of songs that join together to form a narrative arc describing a story that is sometimes vulgar, sometimes profane, and sometimes beautiful. It’s about the psychedelia found in the natural world and it’s a love story.”]

4. Naomi Shelton & The Gospel Queens – “You Got To Move”
from: Daptone Gold II / Daptone Records / September 18, 2015
[A collection of fan favorites, previously released 45 rpm only, and exclusive new tracks by Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens. From Pitchfork.com: Born in the early 1940s, Naomi began performing with her sisters at their small church in Midway, Alabama. After graduating high school and discovering soul music, she moved first to Florida and then to NYC, where she continued singing in church but also held court in Brooklyn nightclubs under the name Naomi Davis. Like many African American singers at the time, her repertoire balanced the secular and the spiritual. Even though her singing career spans half a century, her recording career has been much shorter. In 1999, she and collaborator named Cliff Driver formed a gospel group that attracted the ear of Gabriel Roth. who was running a label called Desco, for which Shelton recorded two sides; when it folded, she signed with his new venture, Daptone Records. She’s been a major presence on that label’s roster, touring the world with the Daptone Super-Soul Revue and singing with the Sugarman 3. Never quite as popular or as prolific as Sharon Jones (who is Daptone’s flagship act), Shelton has proved a powerful vocalist and performer even into her 70s. In 2009, she finally released her debut full-length for the label, What Have You Done, My Brother?, which closed with a soul-stirring cover of Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come”. Five years later, she finally followed it up with 2014’s Cold World.]

9. Ivory Black – “Third Degree”
from: Ready Get Set EP / Independent / June 23, 2015

Ivory Black was born in 1986 in Peoria Illinois, as Devin James Miclettet. Adopted at the age of four, it was difficult to find trust in people offering their home to someone denied of it for so long, she had lived with eight different families, before running away at 15, moving from Indiana to Oklahoma and eventually ending up in Seattle. In 2011, after a friend sent a plane ticket, she landed in here in the Kansas City area, and became a part of new family where she was able to have solid ground and over the past several years she has been performing in singer-songwriter showcases and this June released her debut EP, Ready Get Set.

Ivory Black plays Davey’s Uptown Ramblers Club, 3402 Main Street, on Friday, October 2, with Lucas Oswald and Rae Fitzgerald.

Ivory Black, was last on the show, on May 6.

Ready Get Set was released in June 2015, recorded and mastered by Larry Gann of Awestruck studios, with: Micah Burdick on guitar, Craig Kew on bass, and Lester Estelle, drummer for Kelly Clarkson, on drums for Ivory ‘s EP.

Ivory Black’s dream was made possible by the management skills of Klaartje Van Lue, whom took the opportunity to guide Ivory’s career for the past 4 years.

Klaartje Van Lue is Ivory’s manager and she was the one who helped her find her way to KC. icory has said that she saved her life.

From Ivory’s website:

Growing up in a world where music was a way of self expressing oneself and turning to in times of trouble, it was inevitable that Ivory would turn to it when waters were the roughest. “My parents listened to a lot of classics such as Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles, The Bee Gees, The Rolling Stones, and Tom Petty just to name a few”, Ivory has said. One of which, when a child, Ivory almost burned out a Robbie Dupree single “Steal Away’’ due to the catchy rhythms and melody of the song. “I wasn’t really allowed to listen to newer things, ultimately cause of how conventional my parents really were.”

10. Ivory Black – “Ready Get Set”
from: Ready Get Set EP / Independent / June 23, 2015

Ivory Black recently released a 7-minute EPK, (Electronic Press Kit) where she addresses her life, running away, coming to KC, and Caroline Gibbs, co-founder of the Transgender Institute.

In an interview with The Pitch KC, Caroline Gibbs said, “Trans people have to live with being objectified a lot. It’s an ugly place to be, and nobody wants to live in that place. The fact that people would be willing to live openly in the face of all kinds of denigration tells me how compelling this urge to live out their true gender really is.”

Ivory black says “People see what they want to see.”

Gender has always been defined as binary — either male or female, Ivory sees herself as “non-binar.”

Ivory Black plays Davey’s Uptown Ramblers Club, 3402 Main Street, on Friday, October 2, with Lucas Oswald and Rae Fitzgerald.

11:35 – Interview with Ryan Wilks

IMG_38172015-09-17-1442515324-5745452-Painting1-1

Artist Ryan Wilks recently launched an ambitious KickStarter Campaign to fund his new project called, “Gender Treason,” documenting the various realities of queer persons living in Kansas City through interviews that are being photographed, recorded, transcribed, and painted in oils. Upon completion of each interview Ryan is transcribing key elements, to be printed and framed next to a large scale oil painting created by Ryan of each person interviewed. Ryan will complete at lease 12 portraits and transcribed interviews. The project caught the attention on The Huffington Post who recently featured and interview with Ryan and also featured several of his paintings. You can help to financially support.

For more information on how you can be involved and support this project you can visit: http://www.wilkspainting.com

Ryan explains that “The aspiration of this project is to tell the story of Queer Kansas City, to convey relatable humanity despite vast differences, and to help the public bond with both common and uncommon struggles and victories.”

The Huffington Post became interested in Ryan’s story because as they wrote, “the queer media focuses on the great things going on in big cities, there is far too little attention paid to the smaller communities, many of which are still experiencing serious growing pains.” and that “Kansas City, like many cities in the Midwest, is in the midst of a blossoming of queer art and culture.”

The evolution of Ryan’s Art

Ryan started painting his female friends. It didn’t really have any context to it at all; it took a long time to find my voice in my painting.

Ryan has lived in queer communities in Kansas City, Chicago and San Francisco?

Ryan told Huffington Post: ”I think there are a lot of similarities in the queer culture of Kansas City to both of those places, in that there’s a lot of partying. Generally what I’ve experienced in gay culture has been partying. Especially in the Midwest, bars are one of the few places we as queer people can gather, so a lot of social interactions as gay men take place at a bar. The pride is similar too — the self loathing I experienced as a young man is definitely lifting, especially in San Francisco.”

11:15 – Interview with Nate Allen

Nate Allen, with his wife Tessa, perform as the band, Destroy Nate Allen. Fellow singer songwriter Doby Watson wrote in Deli KC that, Destroy Nate Allen is “a force of nature. A performance-based, upbeat and exciting whirlwind of energy that most full bands could aspire to attain.” After lengthy touring, Nate’s wife Tessa told him to start a solo project so she could have a break. In no time Nate wrote an entire album of songs that were different and darker than the colorful, and optimistic songs of Destroy Nate Allen. Recorded in Portland, Oregon before Nate and Tessa moved to KC about a year ago. Nate Allen & The Pac-Away Dots, are releasing the new album, Take Out The Trash on vinyl. A Special release show for Take Out The Trash is, Wednesday, September 16, at recordBar, 1020 Westport Rd. with Von Strantz opening the show.

Nate wrote that something needed to change. He needed to slow down and apologize for the non-stop pace he had dragged his wife/bandmate, Tessa, through. Staying constantly busy going back to college, recording MANY albums and playing over 800 shows since 2007.

Tessa told him to start a solo project so she could have a break. He listened to her, and in short time wrote an entire album in stark contrast to our bubbly Destroy Nate Allen persona.

On “Social Equality” he contrasts his experiences with those of his friends as we share the same streets. “Blinded by innocence, not fearing anyone, walking with great confidence. Chosen by providence, raised with such ignorance, vindication I do seek.”

Artwork by Joe Mendonca & Nate Allen. All songs written by Nate Allen except Death is Overrated.]

11:26

Nate Allen wrote that “As he focused intensely on looking for work, Portland doors kept shutting but Kansas City seemed to open up. There was work to be found, a cheap place to live and an unknown land. He and Tessa took the jump. Before moving, he dived into recording with a full band, wanting to document what the songs had become. This was a Portland record, and he had no idea how relevant it would be to his new home, or to the rest of the country for that matter.” As Nate wrote: “Written by a workaholic during the throes of unemployment, Take Out The Trash covers the identity struggle between projecting a good image and actually being a kind person.”

Take Out The Trash was funded via Kickstarter pre-orders.
This is Nate’s first non-Destroy Nate Allen since 2006.
The Pac-Away Dots are Nate’s backing band when he has one.
Nate will be touring the album starting in October around the US.

Nate Allen & The Pac-Away Dots, new album, Take Out The Trash, is to be released Sept. 18th. The Vinyl release show for Take Out The Trash is Wednesday, September 16, at recordBar, 1020 Westport Rd.

Spinning Records with Judy Mills
+ More New & MidCoastal Releases

1. “Main Title Instrumental – It’s Showtime Folks”
from: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to All That Jazz / 1980 [WMM’s theme song]

In our first hour, our friend Judy Mills, of Mills Record Company, returned to make her 7th appearance on Wednesday MidDay Medley, and again as “Guest Producer.”

Judy Mills has been a waitress, a student, a teacher, a poet, a corporate road warrior and a corporate retail slave, to name a few. She opened Mills Record Company, a new independent record store, at 314 Westport Rd, Kansas City, MO, about two and half years ago. A year later she expanded into the next door space to allow for used records and a new stage where bands play “in store” every week. Mills Record Company has hosted multiple bands for Record Store Day, and The Middle of The Map Fest.

Mills Record Company also offers a very helpful website: http://www.millsrecordcompany.com with in depth reviews of live shows and new musical releases, photographs, and a calendar of events.

Radio.com wrote that his singing voice, “like Joplin’s, stops you in your tracks.” Shamir has said that he does not mind having his voice described as androgynous, but notes that “countertenor” is the correct term: “It’s not feminine, it’s not masculine. It’s a happy medium … I feel like if the world was more like that, our problems would be gone.”]

[CARLTON MELTON formed along the Mendocino County coastline in Northern California on the weekend of July 17th, 2008, by members: Andy Duvall, Clint Golden, Brian McDougall, Rich Millman, John Steuernagel The idea to play live, loud, improvised, experimental, instrumental, psychedelic music in a geodesic dome had been discussed for many years prior to this date. The opportunity came to fruition after the dome was completely rebuilt and the acoustic sounds inside were fully realized. The music is recorded live inside the dome to analog and digital sources using omni-directional microphones. All music is improvised in the sense that no one really knows who or what is going to be played at any given time. There are no rehearsals, practices, demonstration tapes, second takes… what you hear is the first take… ” Hit It And Quit It ” as Funkadelic would prescribe. There are no studios. We record in Brian’s house and Brian happens to live in a geodesic dome.]

7. Talk Talk – “I Believe in You”
from: Spirit of Eden / Parlophone (EMI) / September 16, 1988
[4th album by the English band Talk Talk. The album did not find either critical acclaim or commercial success on release, however it has over the years gained cult-status and is considered highly influential. A number of popular music industry publications have retrospectively named it one of the better albums of the 1980s. The songs were written, predominantly, by Mark Hollis lead singer, and Tim Friese-Greene (the group’s producer during its active years). The album was developed from a lengthy recording process at Wessex Studios, London between 1987 and 1988. Often working in darkness, the band recorded many hours of improvised performances, edited them down heavily, then re-arranged the remaining collection of soundbites into an album in, mostly, digital format. The end product included elements of rock, jazz, classical, and ambient music. Critics often view Spirit of Eden as a departure from Talk Talk’s previous albums.]

8. Eleventh Day Dream – “Vanishing Point”
from: Works For Tomorrow / Thrill Jockey Records / July 24, 2015
[13th album from Chicago based band founded by guitarists Rick Rizzo and Janet Beveridge Bean, who met at 1069, a house/practice space/hang out in Louisville. After moving to Chicago, Bean and Rizzo joined with guitarist Baird Figi and bassist Doug McCombs; Bean soon switched over to drums. Their first self-titled EP in 1987 introduced the hallmarks of EDD’s sound: Neil Young-inspired electric guitar workouts mixed with punk energy. The band’s full-length follow-up, Prairie School Freakout (1988), won critical praise and the attention of major labels. The band signed with Atlantic Records. Follow-ups Beet (1989) and Lived to Tell (1991) won more strong reviews but did not sell many copies; Figi left during the Lived to Tell tour and was replaced by Matthew “Wink” O’Bannon. The band made a stab for commercial success with 1993’s El Moodio, but the effort was unsuccessful and Eleventh Dream Day was dropped from Atlantic’s roster. O’Bannon left after recording 1994’s “Ursa Major” and the band ceased to be a full-time entity; Rizzo went back to college to earn a degree in education, while Bean and McCombs concentrated on their other musical projects, Freakwater and Tortoise respectively. Eleventh Dream Day has since recorded new albums every few years, starting with 1997’s Eighth. Recent albums have balanced the band’s Young-influenced approach with an interest in ambient sound, likely influenced by McCombs’s work with Tortoise.[citation needed] EDD released Stalled Parade in 2000, playing a handful of shows after the album’s release with Mark Greenberg of (The Coctails) assisting on keyboards and other instruments. Zeroes and Ones was released on April 25, 2006, on Thrill Jockey Records. Riot Now! was released on March 15, 2011, on Thrill Jockey Records. ]
