Musician and composer Johnny Hamil is a teacher, a bass player, a composer, a band member who collaborates with jazz combos, theatre productions, The Malachy Papers, and many musicians in Kansas City. Johnny is one of the founding members of the band Mr. Marco’s V7, a band that has reinvented themselves with each new release, and changed and evolved with different line-ups. Known for their experimental, instrumental music. Johnny joins us today to share more details about his GAV7D Project, the vocal release: “GAV7D – Thanks For Everything.” There will be a special release performance, Sunday, June 21, at 8:00 pm, at recordBar, 1020 Westport Road, KCMO.

Johnny told us that for ALL of the music he has composed for the band came to him in his dreams. 4 years ago Johnny’s dream compositions included lyrics for the first time, and this set him on a new path to create, the GAWD project, which is not Mr. Marco’s V7 proper, but it is members of the V7 from throughout the long history of the the band. The concept was to collaborate a vocal version of a composition with musical friends and then have various lineups of the V7 family interpret the material in different ways.

Selections from the GAWD project first premiered at the Folk Alliance International – Kick Off Party, Feb. 18, at The Westin Kansas City at Crown Center.

GAV7D Project, the vocal release: “GAV7D – Thanks For Everything” will have a special release performance, Sun, June 21, at 8:00 pm, at recordBar, 1020 Westport Rd, KCMO.

Most of the singers involved in the GAV7D vocal record will be there to perform live. Special guests include: Chad Meise, Kent Burnham, Kyle Dalhquist, and vocalists: Howard Iceberg, Steve Tulipana, and Anna Cole, Kasey Rausch, Matt Tady, Mark Stevenson, David Regnier, John Bersuch’s/Bacon Shoe, Liz Spillman, Erin Bopp, Mikal Shapiro, Rex Hobart, Calandra Ysquierdo, Cody Wyoming, and Amy Farrand. CDs or Download Sticker will be available.

The core band includes: Hamil on bass, Mark Southerland on saxophone, Beau Bledsoe on oud, Kent Burnham on drums, Mike Stover on mantar and lap steel and Kyle Dahlquist on trombone and accordion. Guests will include guitarists Mikal Shapiro, Jeff Freling, Nick Howell, Kent Burnham, Chris Tady, and Marco Pascolini, as the band will transform into a five-piece Punk Funk Polka Band; a Noir Cartoon Jazz Band, and a Free Exotica Middle Eastern Band.

Songs include: “Eastwood Got Skinny, Travolta Got Fat,” “Polyester Rehab Scenario,” “Study Chemical Emotional Physical Realignment,” “Don’t Call Me Mr. Smartie Pants,” “The Difference Between Art and Sadness” and “For Those Who Breathe.”

Johnny Hamil is also the organizer of the 6th annual KC BASS FEST 2015, featuring Francois Rabbath. Mike Alexander is a very busy guy. He is a guitarist and singer in the power punk trio, Hipshot Killer. Mike has been a part of the Center of the City Fest for the past 4 years and is also one of this year’s organizers of the Fest. Mike is also a much sought after guitar player and he regularly performs live and records with John Velghe & The Prodigal Sons, and The Starhaven Rounders. Mike returns to Wednesday MidDay Medley to share all the details about the 4th Annual Center of the City Fest, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, June 18, 19, and 20, at Harling’s Upstairs, 3941-A Main St., Kansas City, Missouri.

With the closing of Vandals at 3740 Broadway, formerly Kenny’s Newsroom, and the home of Center of The City Fest from the beginning, many were worried, but Harling’s Upstairs has stepped in to become this year’s host venue.

Mike Alexander and Thad Nugent of Smash The State were on Chris Haghirian’s Eight One Sixty radio program on The Bridge last week. It was fun hearing about how 4 years ago, The Center of The City Fest was created in response to The Middle of The Map Fest, and how there became some crossover bands between the festivals, and ultimately Center of The City helped wave the banner of the KC area’s Punk scene.

The Fest features many variations of Punk. The KC area scene includes many bands.

Mike Tankersley is an artist, and a graduate of the Kansas City Art Institute. Mike has been working for 15 years with art and furniture. Mike is als a guitar player and keyboard player, and works as a producer, sometimes practicing in Joelle’s basement, creating new music and new recordings.

Joelle St. Pierre is an avid music lover and chronic volunteer. She tolds us that music, both recorded and live, weaves a transformative fabric in her life supporting her need for freedom of expression, independence and creativity. By day, Joelle is an insurance agent and by night, she works as a Faux finish painter along with volunteer work for 90.1 FM, Middle of The Map Fest, Folk Alliance International, Boulivardia, Midwest Music Foundation, and many other not-for-profit groups.

12. The Clash – “Lost in the Super Market”
from: London Calling / CBS / December 14, 1979
[After recording their second studio album Give ‘Em Enough Rope (1978), the band separated from their manager Bernard Rhodes. This separation meant that the group had to leave their rehearsal studio in Camden Town and find another location to compose their music. Drawing inspiration from rockabilly, ska, reggae and jazz, the band began work on the album during the summer of 1979. Tour manager Johnny Green had found the group a new place to rehearse called Vanilla Studios, which was located in the back of a garage in Pimlico. The Clash quickly wrote and recorded demos, with Mick Jones composing and arranging much of the music and Joe Strummer writing the lyrics. As early as their second album, the Clash had started to depart from the punk rock sound. While touring in the United States twice in 1979, they chose supporting acts such as rhythm and blues artists Bo Diddley, Sam & Dave, Lee Dorsey, and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, as well as neotraditional country artist Joe Ely and punk rockabilly band the Cramps.]

13. William Onyeabor – “Jungle Gods” (Vinyl)

[William Onyeabor is a funk musician from Nigeria, born in 1945 or 1946, his songs are often heavily rhythmic and synthesized, occasionally epic in scope, with lyrics decrying war sung by both Onyeabor himself and female backing vocalists. According to the Luaka Bop record label, Onyeabor “self-released 8 albums between 1977 and 1985 and then became a born-again Christian, refusing ever to speak about himself or his music again….By attempting to speak with Onyeabor himself, and by talking to people who seem to have firsthand knowledge, Luaka Bop has been trying to construct an accurate biography of him for the past 18 months…without success.” In 2014, the music website, Noisey, affiliated to Vice magazine, released a 31-minute documentary, Fantastic Man, that documents Onyeabor’s history and legacy as well as Noisey’s attempt to track him down for an interview. 2014 also saw a touring supergroup called the Atomic Bomb! Band come together to play Onyeabor’s music at a series of concerts and festivals around the world, the group includes David Byrne (of Talking Heads) and Money Mark (of the Beastie Boys). In December 2014, William Onyeabor made his first radio appearance on the Lauren Laverne Show on BBC 6 Music, where he stated “I only create music that will help the world”, whilst also admitting that he has never played live, despite announcing that he had plans to release new material.]

[Blind Faith were an English blues rock band, composed of Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, Steve Winwood, and Ric Grech. The band, which was one of the first “super-groups”, released their only album, Blind Faith, in August 1969. They were stylistically similar to the bands in which Winwood, Baker, and Clapton had most recently participated, Traffic and Cream. They helped to pioneer the genre of blues/rock fusion.]

17. Sleater-Kinney – “Fangless” (Vinyl)

[8th studio album from Sleater-Kinney, formed in early 1994 in Olympia, Washington, by Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein. The group’s name is derived from Sleater Kinney Road, Interstate 5 exit number 108 in Lacey, Washington, the location of one of their early practice spaces. Tucker was formerly in the influential riot grrrl band Heavens to Betsy, while Brownstein was formerly in the queercore band Excuse 17. They often played at gigs together and formed Sleater-Kinney as a side-project from their respective bands. When Heavens to Betsy and Excuse 17 disbanded, Sleater-Kinney became their primary focus. Janet Weiss of Quasi is the band’s longest lasting and final drummer, though Sleater-Kinney has had other drummers, including Lora Macfarlane, Misty Farrell, and Toni Gogin. Upon Tucker’s graduation from The Evergreen State College (where Brownstein remained a student for three more years), she and then-girlfriend Brownstein took a trip to Australia in early 1994. Their last day there, they stayed up all night recording what would become their self-titled debut album. It was released the following spring. They followed this with Call the Doctor (1996) and Dig Me Out (1997), and became critical darlings. The lineup features: Corin Tucker (vocals and guitar), Carrie Brownstein (guitar and vocals), and Janet Weiss (drums).]

21. Debbie Harry – “French Kissing”
from: Rock Bird / Geffen / November 15, 1986
[Rockbird was Harry’s second solo album, and came four years after the split of Blondie in 1982. Harry had largely put her music career on hold during the mid-1980s in order to look after boyfriend Chris Stein who had been diagnosed with a serious illness. The album was produced by Seth Justman, a key member of the J. Geils Band. Released in November 1986, there were five variations of the album artwork with the lettering in either green, orange, purple, pink and yellow.]

3. The Matchsellers – “White Bathtub”

[First full-length original album from The Matchsellers. Classically trained violinist Julie Bates from Kansas City, and a Chicago blues guitarist from Warsaw, Indiana, Andrew Morris. They met in Leipzig, Germany. During their year of living in the former East Germany, the pair began reanalyzing the songs of their homeland, and developed a tight yet gritty bluegrass style. In the summer of 2013 they left their jobs to hit the road and haven’t looked back. They’ve toured Germany, the UK, the Czech Republic, and 21 United States, averaging 170 shows a year. Kosciusko County is a county in Indiana with a town called Warsaw as it’s county seat. Formed in 1836. It was named after the Polish general Tadeusz Kościuszko who served in the American Revolutionary War and then returned to Poland. More info at http://thematchsellers.com%5D

[Ruddy Swain is David Regnier of Dead Voices and Lauren Krum of The Grisly Hand.
From http://www.kzfr.org: The song has been recorded by Bob Dylan, Dave Van Ronk, The Washington Squares, Bobby Bare, Mercury Rev, The Black Crowes, The Mitchell Trio, Willie Nelson, Nanci Griffith, Cat Power, The Leaves and, in a reworded version, The Byrds. The version recorded by Willie Nelson was used in the film Brokeback Mountain and inaccurately credits Bob Dylan as the songwriter. He was a Friend of Mine” had its origins in a song called “Shorty George” that musicologist John Lomax collected in the 1930’s from inmates at southern prisons and work farms. The most notable version was performed by a guitar playing inmate in Texas named Smith Casey. The title “Shorty George” refers to the train that carries convicts away to their prison. In some versions the singer laments the death of a friend, but in others (like Leadbelly’s) the deceased isn’t a friend but a person of questionable character. In all versions the dead guy was a traveling person, a rambler who dies either on the road or on a train. Lomax’s notes describe it as a “blues” and a “dirge for a dead comrade.” For his part Dylan wrote in the “Bootleg Series” notes that he had adapted “He Was a Friend of Mine” from a song he had learned from Blind Arvella Gray (1906-1980), a Chicago street singer. ]

Theatre director and teacher, David Luby, joined us with Paseo students Jordan Taylor and Khalil Odum spoke about their experiences of writing. Students from the Paseo Academy For the Performing Arts in Kansas City wrote and recorded live radio dramas. On Friday, June 12, at 7:00 pm these students will present these recordings and also perform live, at the Heartland Forum, at Crown Center, for The Mark Time Awards, the most prominent awards worldwide for original radio drama. The Mark Time Awards are part of the HEAR Now: The Audio Fiction and Arts Festival.

David Ossman and Judith Walcutt are presenting The Mark Time Awards (marktimeawards.org), this week in conjunction with the HEAR Now Festival. After 16 years they have moved their awards to KC and launched a new education program in KC public schools.

In April and May recently, Judith Walcutt through her Otherworld Media a 501(c)3 organization (http://otherworldmedia.com/) led a series of workshops at the Paseo Fine & Performing Arts High School with Theater, Creative writing and Broadcasting students from 9th-12th grades. She designed the curriculum to in part teach listening and collaboration skills using the radio theater / audio arts performance as the focus area.

Each student was encouraged to write and produce a short audio performance or recorded audio piece. We even built a temporary digital multi-track recording studio at Paseo for the week to help the students produce their pieces.

During a week in May, approximately 40 students attended the week-long workshops (Sound Play) with Judith to learn various techniques and ways to perform. Twelve student creations were presented and performed live on May 15th at the Paseo High School in the recital hall. David Luby, a theater teacher at Paseo helped facilitate the workshops and partnership with Otherworld Media.

To culminate the education program, this week (June 8-12, 2015), a core group of twelve Paseo high School students will be participating in The Mark Time Academy as part of The Mark Time Awards ceremony to be held 7:00PM Friday June 12th, at Heartland Forum theater as part of the HEAR Now Festival.

The students will be at The Paseo HS (blackbox theater) Monday-Wednesday working and rehearsing with David Ossman (Firesign Theater), Judith Walcutt and other professionals this week to refine and perfect live performance of their creations which will be performed live as part of The Mark Time Awards ceremony Friday evening June 12, 2015 at 7PM and preceding Right Between the Ears at 8PM. Awards and student performances will be at the Heartland Forum Theater in the shops at Crown Center.

The Mark Time Awards and Academy workshops which will now be an annual occurrence and partnership with the Paseo High School in KC for as long as funding is sustained. This is privately funded with contributions and private foundation underwriting. No public education funds are used for this project.

Over a 40-year career Tomlin has won two Tonys, two Peabodys, six Emmys, a Grammy, the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards, plus the Mark Twain Prize for American humor. She has made 18 films and was nominated for an Oscar for her debut in Robert Altman’s “Nashville.” Tomlin lives in Los Angeles with her partner, writer Jane Wagner.

Tyson Leslie, has been a part of so many bands and has recorded and performed so much music, his release: “Train Wrecks, Havoc & Heartbreak” released October 13, 2013 was your first solo release.

Tyson played every instrument except the drums which were handled by his good friend Go Go Ray, he also welcomed guest artists to play selected solos and contributions.

Tyson talked about moving to Nashville at the end of the month.

Tyson believes he has played in between 15 and 20 bands over the last 20 years.

Tyson plays keyboards, guitar, bass, however his very first instrument was the piano. He started playing at the age of 3.

Then he discovered MTV’s Headbangers Ball and the bands: Motley Crew and Guns and Roses and he quickly fell in love with the guitar.

Tyson won a talent contest in Greeley Colorado that helped him buy his first guitar.

Of all of the bands Tyson has been a part of, Pomeroy is the one where he gets noticed. Pomeroy fans from Omaha, Nebraska, and Iowa, recognize him.

Musician, guitarist, and singer, Ian Teeple, along with bassist, Brendan Dulohery, and drummer, Frazier Krohn, and vocalist & keyboard player Emma Daffin, are the band The Fog. Last December this young band released their debut full length, Darkness USA on High Dive Records. Recently, The Fog released, The Fog On Tour In America, a demos compilation, with singles B-sides. Ian Teeple and Brendan Dulohery have known each other since high school, and have played together in some capacity ever since.

Krohn and Dulohery both played in the same high school jazz band, but at different times, and both went on to the University of Missouri–Kansas City’s Conservatory of Music and Dance. Dulohery has transferred to a different program.

Teeple, who played in a band called Palace Neapolitan with Dulohery before the Fog formed in September 2013, also plays in Metatone.

Ian Teeple also plays with Sneaky Creeps, Metatone, Quadrigarum, and Yuck Ratz.

Betse Ellis is one of the hardest working musicians in KC, known by many as a founding member of The Wilders. Betse 2nd full-length solo release, the critically aclaimed, “High Moon Order” was one of our Best Recordings of 2013. She also recently did her 20th year at The Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas, and is currently performing with multi instrumentalist Clarke Wyatt. They have a brand new EP, Bird Notes.

Marion Merritt is our most frequent contributor to WMM, sharing her musical discoveries and info from her encyclopedic brain. She received her MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago studying Film, Video, New Media, and Animation. Her full length solo releases “The Crow The Lark And The Loon from 2008, and “For Good” from 2010 have been acclaimed by local music writers. Mikal is the creator of the web television project, “Go! Go! Global Girls.” She has also created music videos for Dead Voices and Folkicide. Mikal Shapiro is also a curator, producer and co-host of River Trade Radio. Aside from performing as a solo artist Mikal also performs with Chad Brothers of the band Old Sound, she is a member of the 4-piece band Royalphonic, and with Kasey Rausch as Partners in Glory. Kasey and Mikal are also the co-hosts / co-producers of River Trade Radio airing every Sunday morning 9 to 11:00 on 90.1 FM KKFI.][Mikal writes that The Musical is a collection of stories and characters; an intersection between popular music, classical songwriting and personal mythologies. [Omaha, Nebraska based Synth punk, New Wave, pop, lo-fi, and psychedelic musical project led by multi-instrumentalist Shawn Foree. Originally from Yuma, Arizona, Foree began calling his project Digital Leather when he moved to Tucson, where he studied American Literature at University of Arizona. He used student loan money to buy equipment. He managed to release his first three albums after recording them in his bedroom on labels such as Tic Tac Totally, Jay Reatard’s Shattered Records imprint, and FDH Records. He supported this “bedroom project” with several nationwide and European tours. Sorcerer, released on Goner Records in 2008, is a half-live, half-studio record. In 2009, Foree began working on a collection of songs in a fully operational studio. Released in September 2009 by Fat Possum Records, Warm Brother garnered positive reviews. After relocating to Omaha, Nebraska, a 5-piece band formed. They toured around and as a band Digital Leather recorded All Faded. The record sounds huge in comparison to the earlier efforts. [The album consists of comic sketches of Tomlin in her most famous character, Ernestine, the nosy, aggressive, and sharp-tongued telephone operator. The album’s tracks include monologues in which Ernestine tangles over the phone with Joan Crawford, Gore Vidal (“Mr. Veedle”), Martha Mitchell, and J. Edgar Hoover. It was recorded live at the intimate Ice House in Pasadena, California. The album, Tomlin’s first, won her a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Recording. It premiered at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival on May 21, 2013. It aired on HBO on May 26, 2013 and won multiple Emmy and Golden Globe Awards. It was released theatrically June 7, 2013 in the United Kingdom. The film features Michael Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon as Scott Thorsen.]

[Born in West Allis, Wisconsin, his career spanned four decades of concerts, recordings, motion pictures, television, and endorsements, Liberace became world-famous. During the 1950s–1970s he was the highest-paid entertainer in the world and embraced a lifestyle of flamboyant excess both on and off stage. He publicly denied being gay during his lifetime, and sued those who said he was. Towards the end of his life his chauffeur, Scott Thorson, sued him for palimony. He died of an AIDS-related illness in 1987.]

16. Jim Nabors – “It Takes All Kinds To Make The World Go Round”

[Jan. 29, 2013, Hawaii News Now reported that Jim Nabors married his partner of 38 years, Stan Cadwallader, at Seattle, Washington’s Fairmont Olympic Hotel, Jan. 15, a month after same-sex marriage became legal in Washington. An urban legend maintains that Nabors married Rock Hudson in the early ’70s, shortly before Nabors began his relationship with Cadwallader. At least publicly, the two were never more than friends. According to Hudson, the legend originated with a group of “middle-aged homosexuals who live in Huntington Beach” who sent out joke invitations for their annual get-together. One year, the group invited its members to witness “the marriage of Rock Hudson & Jim Nabors,” at which Hudson would take the surname of Nabors’ most famous character, Gomer Pyle, becoming “Rock Pyle.” Those who failed to get the joke spread the rumor. Hudson was also gay but closeted, and because of the fear that one or both of them might be outed, Nabors & Hudson never spoke to each other again.]

I think my parents had a tougher time hearing that I wanted to become a Theatre Major than when I told them I was Gay. Please know, that I believe the theatre is full of all sexual orientations, straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender…just like the rest of the world. The theatre, however, has always been a place where so many gay kids found their freedom and identity. The theatre gave gay kids their first glimpse into a world not found in their sheltered, small towns. Here in this next set is a song from Noel Coward from a album I found in my college library my freshman year. The plays of Noel Coward were some of the first pieces of gay literature to captivate me, and hearing the beautiful lyrics, wit, and diction of Noel Coward in action, you understand why is was so very popular onstage as an actor, well as a director and playwright.

Coward did not publicly acknowledge his homosexuality, but it was discussed candidly after his death by biographers including Graham Payn, his long-time partner, and in Coward’s diaries & letters, published posthumously.]

18. Paul Lynde & Marijane Maricle -“Kids”

[Paul Lynde’s sexual orientation was an open secret in Hollywood, although, in keeping with the prejudices of the time, it was not acknowledged or discussed in public. In a 2013 radio interview, Dick Van Dyke recalled the wrap party for Bye Bye Birdie. A series of men gave short speeches, each one praising Ann-Margret and predicting success and stardom for the young actress. When it was Paul Lynde’s turn to speak, he began, “Well, I guess I’m the only one here who doesn’t want to fuck Ann-Margret.” In 1965, Lynde was involved in an accident in which a young actor, reputed to be his lover, fell to his death from the window of their hotel room in San Francisco’s Sir Francis Drake Hotel. The two had been drinking for hours before 24-year-old James “Bing” Davidson slipped and fell eight stories, an event witnessed by two policemen, yet the event was largely kept out of the press, thus saving Lynde’s career. Despite his campy television persona, Lynde never publicly came out as gay and the press generally refrained from commenting about it. In 1976, a People magazine article on Lynde featured him and Stan Finesmith; the latter was dubbed Lynde’s “suite mate” and “chauffeur-bodyguard.” In the 1970s, this was as close as the press would come to hinting at his sexuality.]

The Biggest Gay Pride Celebration of the year is The 69th Annual Tony Awards that will be held June 7, 2015 to recognize achievement in Broadway productions during the 2014–2015 season. We just heard Charles Nelson Reilly talking about his Audition for “How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” winner of The Tony Award for Best Musical in 1961. As he said, at the time he was playing three parts in “Bye Bye Birdie” winner of The Tony Award for Best Musical of 1960. Two classic Broadway musicals with a Charles Nelson Reilly connection. Here again is Charles Nelson Reilly talking about his experience in”How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” a Broadway classic, with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser, and book by Abe Burrows. For many Queer Kids growing up in small towns, in rural areas, during the 1970s and 1980s and 1990s, The CBS broadcast of the annual Tony Awards was the biggest night of LGBT programming. Here is Rick Lyon with John Tartaglia performing as voice and puppeteer for Rod (the closeted Republican investment banker) in the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Avenue Q, which opened July 31, 2003. John Tartaglia was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical in 2004. First a song from Fun Home, a new musical based of the 2006 graphic memoir by Alison Bechdel nominated for 12 Tony Awards including Best Book & lyrics by Lisa Kron, and the score composed by Jeanine Tesori.

It has been called “the first mainstream musical about a young lesbian.” Ring of Keys is sung by Sydney Lucas who plays Alison as a child and Beth Malone who plays Alison as adult. Both actresses are nominated for Tony Awards.

Another new Broadway musical, An American in Paris, is nominated for 12 Tony Awards including Best Book of a Musical by Craig Lucas, with Director & Choreographer Christopher Wheeldon nominated in both categories. This new musical tells the story of a young American soldier, a beautiful French girl and an iconic European city, all yearning for a new beginning in the aftermath of war. The score features classic songs by George and Ira Gershwin including “I Got Rhythm,” “‘S Wonderful,” “But Not for Me,” “Stairway to Paradise,” “They Can’t Take That Away,” and orchestral music from George Gershwin including “Concerto in F,” “2nd Prelude,” “2nd Rhapsody” and “An American in Paris.” Director/choreographer Christopher Wheeldon made a ballet based on the Gershwin symphonic tone poem of the same name. The piece debuted at the New York City Ballet in 2005. The 1951 film musical An American in Paris also features the Gershwins’ music, but tells a different story. The Original Broadway Cast Recording will be released June 2, so we will play one of the Gershwin songs from the show as sung by the man who first introduced the song in 1937, in the film “Shall We Dance” with Missouri girl, Ginger Rogers, we’ll hear Fred Astaire from his 1957 recording, Mr. Top Hat.

As in the book, the story concerns the father-daughter relationship between Alison Bechdel and her father Bruce Bechdel. It has been called “the first mainstream musical about a young lesbian.” Writer/artist Alison Bechdel’s book Fun Home, a memoir in comics format, was published in 2006 to critical acclaim. Its subject is Alison Bechdel’s coming of age, with particular emphasis on her relationship to her father, Bruce Bechdel. Alison’s coming out as a lesbian is complicated by the revelation that Bruce had also had homosexual relationships, including encounters with males below the age of consent. Four months after Alison comes out to her parents, Bruce is killed by an oncoming truck; although the evidence is equivocal, Alison concludes that he committed suicide.]

26. Fred Astaire – “They Can’t Take That Away from Me”

[1937 song written by George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin and introduced by Fred Astaire in the 1937 film Shall We Dance. The song is performed by Astaire on the foggy deck of the ferry from New Jersey to Manhattan. It is sung to Ginger Rogers, who remains silent listening throughout. No dance sequence follows, which was unusual for the Astaire-Rogers numbers. Astaire and Rogers did dance to it later in their last movie The Barkleys of Broadway (1949) in which they played a married couple with marital issues. George Gershwin died two months after the film’s release, and he was posthumously nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 1937 Oscars.]

Nicole Springer grew up in Oak Grove, MO, and graduated H.S. in 2004. She studied Music-Vocal/Choral at Missouri State University, in Springfield, MO. Nicole told The Pitch (Jan. 10, 2012): “I grew up singing in gospel choirs,” she says. “And I still love gospel music, though I’m not religious or anything. I did musicals throughout high school, and I went to school for a year at Missouri State for music education. But I’ve never been in a committed band before this one.”]

[One of 75,000 contestants to audition for the 13th season of American Idol. She sang for the initial cattle call judges at San Francisco’s AT&T Park in July 2013 along with approximately 1,000 other hopefuls. She has been praised for her “vocal ability and likable demeanor” as well as her “soulful rasp. Nobilette was adopted and raised by two lesbian women and is publicly out as lesbian, which she talked about during her initial audition for the American Idol celebrity judges, which was aired. She stated to the judges, “I’m very obviously gay, and there are always going to be people in America and everywhere else who are definitely going to hate me. But I think in the last two years there have been a lot of things that have really changed that, and have made it a positive thing.” She is the first finalist to be openly gay going into the top contestants round; other contestants were not public with their information, and came out publicly after their finals. Her moms separated when she was four, and both now have girlfriends, resulting in a large extended family, which Nobilette characterized as “very San Francisco.”]

Bill Svoboda is serving as the KC Pride Fest Producer for Kansas City Gay Pride, June 5th, 6th, & 7th, at Berkley Riverfront Park. Bill serves under the guidance of the Kansas City Diversity Coalition the not-for-profit service organization that presents KC Gay Pride. Bill started his career over 25 years ago in the event planning industry working for the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce then in 2002 he started EventPros, Inc., planning Festivals, Corporate and Association events all over the country. He was one of the original producers of the KCRiverFest and the KC Marathon – Health & Fitness Expo, just to name a few of his accomplishments. This fall Bill will take over the Production role for the Kansas City Jazz Festival.

Originally written for a mooted Ziggy Stardust musical in late 1973, “Rebel Rebel” was Bowie’s last single in the glam rock style that had been his trademark. The song is notable for its gender-bending lyrics (“You got your mother in a whirl / She’s not sure if you’re a boy or a girl”) as well as its distinctive riff, which rock journalist Kris Needs has described as “a classic stick-in-the-head like the Stones’ ‘Satisfaction'”.Transsexual rock artist and former Bowie associate Jayne County claims that “Rebel Rebel” was based in part on County’s own song “Queenage Baby”, which was recorded in January 1974 by Bowie’s Mainman Records, but not released at the time. The song later surfaced on the independent 2006 release Wayne County at the Trucks, and some critics, upon hearing the track, echoed County’s claims.
