15. Liberace – “The Impossible Dream” [Vinyl]
from: Liberace Sends You Love [3 record set] / Brookville Records – ABC Records / 1974
[Born in West Allis, Wisconsin, his career spanned four decades of concerts, recordings, motion pictures, television, and endorsements, Liberace became world-famous. During the 1950s–1970s he was the highest-paid entertainer in the world and embraced a lifestyle of flamboyant excess both on and off stage. He publicly denied being gay during his lifetime, and sued those who said he was. Towards the end of his life his chauffeur, Scott Thorson, sued him for palimony. He died of an AIDS-related illness in 1987.]

16. Jim Nabors – “It Takes All Kinds To Make The World Go Round”
from: Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. / Sony / 1965
[Jan. 29, 2013, Hawaii News Now reported that Jim Nabors married his partner of 38 years, Stan Cadwallader, at Seattle, Washington’s Fairmont Olympic Hotel, Jan. 15, a month after same-sex marriage became legal in Washington. An urban legend maintains that Nabors married Rock Hudson in the early ’70s, shortly before Nabors began his relationship with Cadwallader. At least publicly, the two were never more than friends. According to Hudson, the legend originated with a group of “middle-aged homosexuals who live in Huntington Beach” who sent out joke invitations for their annual get-together. One year, the group invited its members to witness “the marriage of Rock Hudson & Jim Nabors,” at which Hudson would take the surname of Nabors’ most famous character, Gomer Pyle, becoming “Rock Pyle.” Those who failed to get the joke spread the rumor. Hudson was also gay but closeted, and because of the fear that one or both of them might be outed, Nabors & Hudson never spoke to each other again.]

10:22 – “Just say the lines and don’t bump into the furniture.”

I think my parents had a tougher time hearing that I wanted to become a Theatre Major than when I told them I was Gay. Please know, that I believe the theatre is full of all sexual orientations, straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender…just like the rest of the world. The theatre, however, has always been a place where so many gay kids found their freedom and identity. The theatre gave gay kids their first glimpse into a world not found in their sheltered, small towns. Here in this next set is a song from Noel Coward from a album I found in my college library my freshman year. The plays of Noel Coward were some of the first pieces of gay literature to captivate me, and hearing the beautiful lyrics, wit, and diction of Noel Coward in action, you understand why is was so very popular onstage as an actor, well as a director and playwright.

After Noel we’ll hear Paul Lynde from the Original Broadway Cast Recording of “Bye Bye Birdie.” Then we’ll hear Charles Nelson Reilly talking about his experience in “Bye Bye Birdie” while auditioning for “How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying”

10:24 – “Tots” and “Kids”

17. Noel Coward – “What’s Going To Happen To the Tots”
from: Noel Coward in New York / drg / 2003 [orig. 1957] [Born Dec. 16, 1899 / died Mar. 26, 1973. English playwright, composer, director, actor and singer, known for his wit, flamboyance, and what Time magazine called “a sense of personal style, a combination of cheek and chic, pose and poise”. Coward did not publicly acknowledge his homosexuality, but it was discussed candidly after his death by biographers including Graham Payn, his long-time partner, and in Coward’s diaries & letters, published posthumously.]

18. Paul Lynde & Marijane Maricle -“Kids”
from: Bye Bye Birdie! (Original Broadway Cast) / Columbia Masterworks / 1960
[Paul Lynde’s sexual orientation was an open secret in Hollywood, although, in keeping with the prejudices of the time, it was not acknowledged or discussed in public. In a 2013 radio interview, Dick Van Dyke recalled the wrap party for Bye Bye Birdie. A series of men gave short speeches, each one praising Ann-Margret and predicting success and stardom for the young actress. When it was Paul Lynde’s turn to speak, he began, “Well, I guess I’m the only one here who doesn’t want to fuck Ann-Margret.” In 1965, Lynde was involved in an accident in which a young actor, reputed to be his lover, fell to his death from the window of their hotel room in San Francisco’s Sir Francis Drake Hotel. The two had been drinking for hours before 24-year-old James “Bing” Davidson slipped and fell eight stories, an event witnessed by two policemen, yet the event was largely kept out of the press, thus saving Lynde’s career. Despite his campy television persona, Lynde never publicly came out as gay and the press generally refrained from commenting about it. In 1976, a People magazine article on Lynde featured him and Stan Finesmith; the latter was dubbed Lynde’s “suite mate” and “chauffeur-bodyguard.” In the 1970s, this was as close as the press would come to hinting at his sexuality.]

19. Charles Nelson Reilly -“The Audition”
from: How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying / Victor / 1961

10:32 – Tony Awards

The Biggest Gay Pride Celebration of the year is The 69th Annual Tony Awards that will be held June 7, 2015 to recognize achievement in Broadway productions during the 2014–2015 season. We just heard Charles Nelson Reilly talking about his Audition for “How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” winner of The Tony Award for Best Musical in 1961. As he said, at the time he was playing three parts in “Bye Bye Birdie” winner of The Tony Award for Best Musical of 1960. Two classic Broadway musicals with a Charles Nelson Reilly connection. Here again is Charles Nelson Reilly talking about his experience in”How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” a Broadway classic, with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser, and book by Abe Burrows. In 1961 Charles Nelson Reilly was the winner of The Tony Award for his portrayal of Bud Frump.

In this next set we are featuring more music from the biggest Gay Pride celebration of the year, The 69th Annual Tony Awards. First a song from Fun Home, a new musical based of the 2006 graphic memoir by Alison Bechdel nominated for 12 Tony Awards including Best Book & lyrics by Lisa Kron, and the score composed by Jeanine Tesori.

It has been called “the first mainstream musical about a young lesbian.” Ring of Keys is sung by Sydney Lucas who plays Alison as a child and Beth Malone who plays Alison as adult. Both actresses are nominated for Tony Awards.

Another new Broadway musical, An American in Paris, is nominated for 12 Tony Awards including Best Book of a Musical by Craig Lucas, with Director & Choreographer Christopher Wheeldon nominated in both categories. This new musical tells the story of a young American soldier, a beautiful French girl and an iconic European city, all yearning for a new beginning in the aftermath of war. The score features classic songs by George and Ira Gershwin including “I Got Rhythm,” “‘S Wonderful,” “But Not for Me,” “Stairway to Paradise,” “They Can’t Take That Away,” and orchestral music from George Gershwin including “Concerto in F,” “2nd Prelude,” “2nd Rhapsody” and “An American in Paris.” Director/choreographer Christopher Wheeldon made a ballet based on the Gershwin symphonic tone poem of the same name. The piece debuted at the New York City Ballet in 2005. The 1951 film musical An American in Paris also features the Gershwins’ music, but tells a different story. The Original Broadway Cast Recording will be released June 2, so we will play one of the Gershwin songs from the show as sung by the man who first introduced the song in 1937, in the film “Shall We Dance” with Missouri girl, Ginger Rogers, we’ll hear Fred Astaire from his 1957 recording, Mr. Top Hat.

25. Sydney Lucas & Beth Malone – “Ring of Keys”
from: Fun Home (A New Broadway Musical) / PS Classics / May 19, 2015
[Fun Home is a musical adapted by Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori from Alison Bechdel’s 2006 graphic memoir of the same name. As in the book, the story concerns the father-daughter relationship between Alison Bechdel and her father Bruce Bechdel. It has been called “the first mainstream musical about a young lesbian.” Writer/artist Alison Bechdel’s book Fun Home, a memoir in comics format, was published in 2006 to critical acclaim. Its subject is Alison Bechdel’s coming of age, with particular emphasis on her relationship to her father, Bruce Bechdel. Alison’s coming out as a lesbian is complicated by the revelation that Bruce had also had homosexual relationships, including encounters with males below the age of consent. Four months after Alison comes out to her parents, Bruce is killed by an oncoming truck; although the evidence is equivocal, Alison concludes that he committed suicide.]

26. Fred Astaire – “They Can’t Take That Away from Me”
from: Mr. Top Hat / Verve / 1957
[1937 song written by George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin and introduced by Fred Astaire in the 1937 film Shall We Dance. The song is performed by Astaire on the foggy deck of the ferry from New Jersey to Manhattan. It is sung to Ginger Rogers, who remains silent listening throughout. No dance sequence follows, which was unusual for the Astaire-Rogers numbers. Astaire and Rogers did dance to it later in their last movie The Barkleys of Broadway (1949) in which they played a married couple with marital issues. George Gershwin died two months after the film’s release, and he was posthumously nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 1937 Oscars.]

[We first met The Clementines as a duo of Tim Jenkins & Nicole Springer when they played LIVE on WMM April 25, 2012. Since then they’ve become a solid 4-piece band. Nicole Springer grew up in Oak Grove, MO, and graduated H.S. in 2004. She studied Music-Vocal/Choral at Missouri State University, in Springfield, MO. Nicole told The Pitch (Jan. 10, 2012): “I grew up singing in gospel choirs,” she says. “And I still love gospel music, though I’m not religious or anything. She has been praised for her “vocal ability and likable demeanor” as well as her “soulful rasp. Nobilette was adopted and raised by two lesbian women and is publicly out as lesbian, which she talked about during her initial audition for the American Idol celebrity judges, which was aired. She stated to the judges, “I’m very obviously gay, and there are always going to be people in America and everywhere else who are definitely going to hate me. But I think in the last two years there have been a lot of things that have really changed that, and have made it a positive thing.” She is the first finalist to be openly gay going into the top contestants round; other contestants were not public with their information, and came out publicly after their finals. Her moms separated when she was four, and both now have girlfriends, resulting in a large extended family, which Nobilette characterized as “very San Francisco.”]

32. The Cure – “Lovesong”
from: Disintegratration / Fiction / August 21, 1989
[3rd single from The Cure’s 8th studio album. The song saw considerable success in the United States, where it was a number two hit (blocked by Janet Jackson’s Miss You Much and the band’s only top ten entry on the Billboard Hot 100. This song was also performed by Adele on her 2011 album 21. Robert Smith, Simon Gallup, Porl Thompson, Roger O’Donnell, Boris Williams, and Lol Tolhurst.]

33. David Bowie – “Rebel Rebel”
from: A Reality Tour / ISO – Columbia – Legacy / January 25, 2010
[Recorded November 22-23, 2003, Point Theatre, Dublin, Ireland. Originally written for a mooted Ziggy Stardust musical in late 1973, “Rebel Rebel” was Bowie’s last single in the glam rock style that had been his trademark. The song is notable for its gender-bending lyrics (“You got your mother in a whirl / She’s not sure if you’re a boy or a girl”) as well as its distinctive riff, which rock journalist Kris Needs has described as “a classic stick-in-the-head like the Stones’ ‘Satisfaction'”.Transsexual rock artist and former Bowie associate Jayne County claims that “Rebel Rebel” was based in part on County’s own song “Queenage Baby”, which was recorded in January 1974 by Bowie’s Mainman Records, but not released at the time. The song later surfaced on the independent 2006 release Wayne County at the Trucks, and some critics, upon hearing the track, echoed County’s claims. The 2004, live version features David Bowie – vocals, guitars, stylophone, harmonica; Earl Slick – guitar; Gerry Leonard – guitar; Gail Ann Dorsey – bass guitar, backing vocals, lead vocals on “Under Pressure”; Sterling Campbell – drums; Mike Garson – keyboards, piano; Catherine Russell – keyboards, percussion, acoustic guitar, backing vocals. A Reality Tour was a worldwide concert tour by David Bowie in support of the Reality album. The tour commenced on 7 October 7, 2003 at the Forum, Copenhagen, Denmark continuing through Europe, North America, Asia, including a return to New Zealand and Australia for the first time since the 1987 Glass Spider Tour. The tour grossed $46,000,000, making it the ninth-highest grossing tour of 2004. At over 110 shows, the tour was the longest tour of Bowie’s career. Bowie played Kansas City, May 10, 2004, at Starlight Theatre. I was there, seven rows from the stage.]

[Charlie Colborne – keyboards, guitar, vocals; Bill Belzer – drums; Jeff Harshbarger – bass; Recorded at More Famouser Studios w/ Mike Nolte engineer, mixing, mastering the recordings. The Sleazebeats have played Live on the show on several occassions.]

35. Lou Reed and John Cale – “Small Town”
from: Songs For Drella / Sire – Warner Bros. / 1990
[Dedicated to the memory of Andy Warhol, their mentor, who had died unexpectedly in 1987. Drella was a nickname for Warhol coined by Warhol Superstar Ondine, a contraction of Dracula and Cinderella, used by Warhol’s crowd. The song cycle focuses on Warhol’s interpersonal relations and experiences, with songs falling roughly into three categories: Warhol’s first-person perspective (which makes up the vast majority of the album), third-person narratives chronicling events and affairs, and first-person commentaries on Warhol by Reed and Cale themselves. The songs on the album are, to some extent, in chronological order.]

Kodascope is a six piece super group of area musicians who also play in the bands: Found A Job, Monta At Odds, Claire and The Crowded Stage, Anna Cole and the Other Lovers, The Waldo Jazz Collective, and Brutus. Formed from the ashes of the bands: Molly Picture Club and Dream Wolf, the group includes: Matthew Hayden on drums and percussion; Justin Skinner on percussion and drums; Michael Tipton on vocals and guitar; Ashleigh Guthrie on keyboards; Brent Jamison on bass; and Andy Kirk on guitar. Kodascope play a special CD Release Show, Sat, May 23, at The Brick, with Schwervon, and DJ Ser Matt.

Megan Zander (Dream Wolf, REN) and Camry Ivory (Chris Meck & The Guilty Birds) lend their amazing vocal talents to the EP on a couple tracks: “So Afraid of Losing You,” and “It’s Alright, It’s OK.”

Harnessing funk, soul, pop, and electronic influences, the band has crafted an album reflective of their energetic live performances.

The current line-up of the band started playing shows in the summer of 2014 and was well-received by dancing audiences.

Not wanting to release an album that strayed too far from that experience, the band began recording live in their West Bottoms studio in the fall. “We would basically lock ourselves in the studio and play through the songs a few times and try to capture the energy we have as a live band,” says Justin Skinner, percussionist.

Holing up a couple times a week for a month in Skinner’s studio, the band knocked out 8 eight songs for a full length album. “We are all album-lovers, so we wanted to put songs on this first release that fit together and have something in common thematically,” explains singer Mike Tipton.

The EP was mixed and produced by Skinner over the course of the winter.

10:47

In December 2014, the band released “Wind Rider” on ITunes and Spotify, along with a self-produced video.

“We wanted to get something out to show the fruits of our labor and that song shows a different side to our music than the dance stuff. It’s a pretty good tune for the winter months,” says drummer Matt Hayden.

10:15 – Interview with Allison Webber and Gk Callahan

Allison Webber and Gk Callahan

Allison Webber and Gk Callahan

Allison Webber is a freelance photographer based in San Francisco, her personal work focuses on fine art documentary and portraits shot with multiple different film cameras. Her work has been shown in galleries in San Francisco, Portland and Vermont. Webber’s editorial work centers mostly on the cocktail industry on the west coast and portraits for artists, chefs, bartenders and distillers. Her images have been published in Juxtapose Magazine, Food and Wine and online in The Wall Street Journal, and other notable sites.

Gk Callahan is a trans-media artist. He earned his MFA in social practice at California College of the Arts and his BFA in painting at the San Francisco Art Institute. Creating cultural change through social engagement, Gk focuses on humanitarian issues around public health. Gk is the founder of The Please Touch Community Garden in San Francisco; and has produced various exhibitions in galleries and alternative spaces throughout the Bay Area. He has taught art to the blind and visually impaired, as well as to grade school children, within the non-profit arts sector, and has facilitated several community based public murals around the San Francisco Bay area.

Allison Webber and Gk Callahan joined us to discuss Contracting an Issue – A social awareness project and performance, April 29, at 6:00 pm, at LikeMe Lighthouse, at 3909 Main St. Contracting An Issue – Kansas City, is a spoken-word documentary performance collaboration with Cat Mahari composed of local stories and questions about HIV/AIDS here in KC.

Gk Callahan, recently wrote in his blog about, “Why do you do this kind of work? Why HIV/AIDS?”

[From Gk’s blog site at contractinganissue.com: “There are many answers. My mom likes to joke that I picked two of the hardest and worst paying careers because I am a glutton for punishment. Currently, I spend my days working on a participatory art practice; this sort of art form (social practice) “for me” blends social work and art. It is a difficult medium to finance and promote, but recently, this project was, in a very uneasy way, validated. This form of validation is sad. I don’t want this to come across as gossip or the airing of dirty laundry, but even with the grief I feel, the validation that the work I am struggling to produce is making an impact lets me know that I must keep going, even if sometimes it feels like I am talking to a wall.”]

Have you ever had someone tell you that they have contracted HIV?

Allison Webber’s passion has always been about capturing the honest moments in between, fleshing out the day to day with narratives on the people and the places they inhabit.

Contracting An Issue – Kansas City, is a spoken-word documentary performance collaboration with Cat Mahari composed of local stories and questions about HIV/AIDS here in KC.

Cat Mahari is part of the Charlotte Street Foundation Studio Residency Program. She is a dancer and performance artist whose work is based in exploring collaboration, practice, and research of known and unknown movement disciplines, video projects, and music. She has performed nationally and internationally. In 2011, she received her MA from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, London, UK. Johnson focuses on issues of communication-relationship paradigms. Her investigations utilize, convey, and present a diversity of processes pertaining to individuality and culture. She is both self-taught and has had guided training in urban dance, ballet, and contemporary movements, and utilizes lived experience across a spectrum of politics, society, and culture.

The Cast has been rehearsing this past week and last.

Material, text, was created from interviews.

HIV testing will be offered on-site at this event and will be free, CONFIDENTIAL HIV testing. Sufficient accommodations will be made to provide a confidential testing experience, from KC CARE staff) look forward to attending the event!

Gk has also built expertise in cultural development, working at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts under the Curator of Public Programs in the Community Engagement Department, and with the City of San Francisco working on public health policies.

In reference to Gk’s last project the Please Touch Community Garden –
“A bright red needle dispensary box was placed just outside the garden gates. Once installed, the number of needles found around the lot dropped dramatically. The needles were one of the bigger problems the team faced at the beginning of the project. Over 2,000 used needles were collected initially, and for a long time after the initial clean up, five to fifteen needles a day would need disposal. It was a biohazard, it was scary, and in its own way an epidemic. It was one of those said angels, and the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, who were instrumental in helping get the sharps dispensary box installed. It was the needles that led Callahan to his next project . . .
The needles are a byproduct of combating the AIDS epidemic; they are the aftermath of saving lives. It was a moment for him where an issue he had only known to fear as a sort of boogie monster manifested itself as a reality. The accumulation of needles forced him to see something that has always been in his face. He wondered where had the culture that formerly addressed this issue gone? Had it moved? Had the fear of something still very real become sedated by it’s own presence? So he began investigating and listening to people’s stories, they were so enlightening; he felt they needed to be shared. The idea for the Contracting An Issue project was born from the waste and challenge of creating a garden on a blighted lot. ”

Contracting an Issue – A social awareness project and performance, Tonight, at 6:00 pm, at LikeMe Lighthouse, at 3909 Main St. Contracting An Issue – Kansas City, is a spoken-word documentary performance collaboration with Cat Mahari composed of local stories and questions about HIV/AIDS here in KC. . From Wild Honey Pie.com:
The video capitalizes on the track’s incredibly cinematic feel, cutting quickly between vintage and current footage of a man wandering around his own town. Of the visual Shoare says: “This video was put together by Shae Mermis in Kansas City. We compiled some found footage that we thought fit the vibe for the song and also shot some cool footage of our own that mirrors the album artwork and also links up in a cool way with out found footage. The song is supposed to be kind of dreamy and foggy…so we went there with the video too.”

Because we witnessed Peter Hook perform the music of Joy Division at Middle of The Map Fest…

18. Joy Division – “Transmission”
from: Permanent / London Records / May 8, 1995 [compilation album]
[Debut single originally released on 7″ vinyl in October 1979 by record label Factory. It was re-released as a 12″ single with a different sleeve in December 1980. Joy Division consisted of singer Ian Curtis, guitarist/keyboardist Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook and drummer Stephen Morris. Formed by Sumner and Hook right after they attended a Sex Pistols gig, Joy Division transcended their punk roots to pioneer a complex post-punk sound that incorporated synthesizers, dub-influenced production values, and haunting melodies. Their self-released 1978 debut EP, An Ideal for Living, drew the attention of the Manchester television personality Tony Wilson. Joy Division’s debut album Unknown Pleasures was released in 1979 on Wilson’s independent label Factory Records. Aided by Martin Hannett’s sparse production, it was a critical success with the British music press. Despite this early acclaim, Curtis suffered from severe depression and personal difficulties, including a broken marriage and epilepsy. In particular he found it increasingly difficult to perform at live concerts, during which he often suffered seizures. In May 1980, on the eve of the band’s debut American tour, Curtis, aged 23, committed suicide. Closer, Joy Division’s second and final album was released two months later; the album and preceding single “Love Will Tear Us Apart” became the band’s highest charting releases. After Curtis’s death, the remaining members continued as New Order, achieving critical and commercial success. Joy Division are seen as one of the most influential bands of the late 1970s.]
