At 11:00 Bernard Dugan, Jr. and Jason Beers join us to talk about, The Brannock Device, formed in 1995, with guitarist and vocalist Jeremy Schutte. We’ll spin a few of the band’s earliest recordings. The three original members of the trio: Bernie, Jason, and Jeremy, will reunite for the first time in six years to play The Brick, and officially release an album that was recorded 12 years ago! The Brannock Device play a 20 Year Anniversary & Album Release Party at The Brick, 1727 McGee, KCMO, on Friday, February 27, at 9:00 pm, with special guests: Black Luck and The Heavy Figs.

At 11:30 Mark talks with J. Ashley Miller, who with his trance band Quadrigarum, composed and produced a new operetta called, R v B, featuring six actors and an octet of curated musicians. In conjunction with their grant from the Charlotte Street Foundation, each performance is a singular event, featuring site specific compositions, fiercely performed and captured with high definition cameras and recording equipment. The performance features two agile drone instruments, known as ‘Chariots’, designed and built by founder and conductor of Quadrigarum, J. Ashley Miller. Quadrigarum performs R v B, March 7 & 8, la Esquina Gallery, 1000 W. 25th Street, KCMO. Doors open at 7:30 pm, the performance begins at 8:00 pm sharp (no late entry). [The HillBenders came together in late March 2008 after the break-up of a former band (The Arkamo Rangers)left three of it’s members, Mark Cassidy on Banjo, Jim Rea on Guitar, & Gary Rea on Bass) picking up the pieces and looking for a fresh start. Mark Cassidy’s friend from South Plains College, Nolan Lawrence, a mandolin player, moved from Austin, TX to join the yet unnamed HillBenders. Former member of The Arkamo Rangers, Chad Graves returned to his home in Polk County, MO. and began playing Dobro with the band. The HillBander are the recipients of: 2010 National Single Mic Champions, 2009 Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Contest Winners, and 2009 Rockygrass Finalists. Louis Meyers was one of the founders of the SXSW Music Festival. As a musician himself, Louis Meyers was already attending the Folk Alliance International Conference and eventually he became Executive Director of FAI for over 10 years. Louis moved the FAI to Kansas City in 2014 and has worked to build relationships with Kansas City’s music community through partnerships and The FOLK Store, at 509 Delaware, in the River Market. Musician and composer Johnny Hamil is a teacher, a bass player who collaborates with jazz combos, theatre productions, The Malachy Papers, and many musicians in Kansas City. Johnny is one of the founding members of the band Mr. Marco’s V7, a band that has reinvented themselves with each new release, and changed and evolved with different line-ups. Known for their experimental, instrumental music, Johnny told us that for ALL of the music he has composed for the band came to him in his dreams. 4 years ago Johnny’s dream compositions included lyrics for the first time, and this set him on a new path to create, the GAWD project, which is not Mr. Marco’s V7 proper, but it is members of the V7 from throughout the long history of the the band. The concept was to collaborate a vocal version of a composition with musical friends and then have various lineups of the V7 family interpret the material in different ways. Selections from the GAWD project that will premiere at the Folk Alliance International – Kick Off Party, Feb. 18, at 8:00 pm in the Penn Valley Room, at The Westin Kansas City at Crown Center, TONIGHT!

[Indie folk duo from Eagle Rock, California, comprised of singers and guitarists Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan, who formed the group in early 2011. The Grammy-nominated, flat-picking harmony duo have since emerged as a powerful voice defining the continuing folk tradition. The band has recorded and released three albums: Retrospect, Prologue, and The Ash & Clay. Kelley Hunt co-produced “Bones” with her husband and manager, Al Berman, at Sixteen Ton Studios in Nashville. With drummer Bryan Owings, who played on two previous recordings, “Gravity Loves You” and “Mercy”; Hammond B3 player Mark Jordan, who played on the same two recordings and has toured with Hunt; and bassist Tim Marks, who played on “Gravity.”

88 Records is her record label.

[Previously-unreleased music with new production by Mavis Staples and Jeff Tweedy of Wilco. The album features 10 songs, originally recorded and produced by Pops in 1999, but left unfinished at the time of his death in 2000. The album, which also features newly recorded vocals by Mavis Staples, takes its title directly from the instruction Pops gave to his daughter as the two listened to the unfinished recording before his death: “Don’t lose this.” Mavis didn’t, and in 2014 brought the tapes of her father’s last work to her recent collaborator, Tweedy, for completion. The two had previously teamed up on Mavis’ recent solo releases, One True Vine and the Grammy-winning You Are Not Alone.]

8. The Brian Jonestown Massacre – “Heat”

[Last year BJM released their 13th studio album, Revelation in May. Late in the year this three song EP was released on vinyl. Neo-psychedelia. Formed in San Francisco in 1990. The band’s output spans psychedelic rock, folk rock and shoegaze. The name “Brian Jonestown Massacre” is mix of The Rolling Stones’ founder and guitarist Brian Jones and the infamous mass cult suicide in Jonestown, Guyana. Along with The Dandy Warhols, BJM were the subjects of the 2004 documentary film Dig!. The film captured a love–hate relationship between both bands, highlighting the interaction of BJM frontman Anton Newcombe with his counterpart in the Warhols, Courtney Taylor-Taylor. The film was recorded over the course of seven years by Ondi Timoner and won the Documentary Grand Jury Prize at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. For over 10 years we’ve play their music on WMM. We love the creative genius of rock underdog Anton Newcombe. ]

12. Maria The Mexican – “You and Me Against the Moon”

[Influenced by traditional Mariachi music, a hybrid of Mexican folklore and Rock. For 10 years, Teresa & Maria Elena Cuevas performed w/ Mariachi Estrella founded by their grandmother Teresa Cuevas in 1970. One of the first all female mariachi bands in the country, Maria Teresa Alonzo Cuevas is a pioneer in the community. Her band flourished in the 80s but was struck by tragedy when 4 of the 7 members were killed in the Hyatt Skywalk collapse in 1981. Once Teresa recovered she began teaching her grand-children Mariachi music. In 2000, Teresa & Maria began exploring other genres of music while simultaneously co-directing Mariachi Estrella. Maria the Mexican began as a band in 2011, in Chicago, when vocalists Maria and Teresa Cuevas hired blues/funk musician Garrett Nordstrom to play Mariachi guitar. Having been lifelong musicians from the Midwest, Nordstrom and the Cuevas Sisters paired up with guitarist Jason Riley to form Maria the Mexican, mixing with blues, soul, funk, rock, Americana Soul, Mexicana Groove.

13. William Elliott Whitmore – “Don’t Need It”

[7th album from American blues singer and musician from Lee County, Iowa, born May 11, 1978. In his live performances he mostly of plays the banjo or guitar while singing. While he has earned much acclaim from the folk, blues and alt-country communities, and hardcore punk community. Whitmore has toured with Chris Cornell, City and Colour, The Pogues, Murder By Death, Clutch, Lucero, Converge, Red Sparrows, Modern Life is War, Frontier Ruckus, Frank Turner and The Low Anthem.]

In the spring of 2007, with degree in hand, and a nearly finished solo album, Jacob moved to Kansas City, by the end of 2008 The Blackbird Revue was formed with Danielle. Jacob and Danielle talked about how they met, and began collaborating.

Bach Aria Soloists are a celebrated and adventurous chamber music ensemble dedicated to presenting the genius of Johann Sebastian Bach and those he inspired, through performances, collaborations and educational outreach. Now in their 15th year Bach Aria Soloists offer collaborations with composer, choreographers, musicians & actors.

Elizabeth Suh Lane is the founder-Artistic Director and violinist of the Bach Aria Soloists. She has been acclaimed, “…among the finest chamber musicians in America today” by San Francisco Symphony’s Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas. She has performed across the globe as a chamber, solo and orchestral musician in the finest concert halls.

Composer Narong Prangcharoen was awarded the 2013 Guggenheim Fellowship. His work has been performed internationally with: Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, German National Theater Orchestra, China Philharmonic Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra. He is a composer in residence for the Pacific Symphony in Orange County, California. He received his Doctor of Music Arts academic degree from University of Missouri-Kansas City. His primary teacher was Chen Yi.

In February of 1988, KKFI began broadcasting over the airwaves…

We helped spread the news about Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear who were featured four times in 14 months on Wednesday MidDay Medley, and who wowed audiences and KKFI’s Tribute to Pete Seeger at Unity, and 90.1 FM’s Crossroads Music Fest. A few weeks later they wowed national music critics at The Americana Music Festival in Nashville and ended the year being signed to Glassnote Records and recording their first full length record in Nashville. They will be opening for Iron and Wine at The Uptown Theatre for The Middle of The Map Fest. Their debut full-length release is expected in April.

We’ve covered… The expansion of Mills Record Company (doubling their size.) The opening of Records with Merritt, 1617 Westport Road. The LIVE performances at Vinyl Renaissance on West 39th…and the comeback of vinyl. We have devoted entire shows to 7 inch local vinyl releases, and are including vinyl plays in almost all of the shows we have done in the last year.

We’ve come a long way since 1988, when those first radio shows were pre-recorded on reel to reel tape in the basement of Tom Crane’s house, and delivered to the tower site and transmitter, to be played.

Anne Winter aka Little Orphan Annie hosted Kansas City’s first punk show on the airwaves. KKFI still celebrates punk music with one of the best music shows, DIY KC, Monday nights at midnight. On Wednesday MidDay Medley we regularly feature punk, as well as electronic, folk, indie rock, alternative, jazz, classical, soul, blues, country, hip hop.

Did you know, that in the late 1990s Robert Moore served as Station Manager at 90.1 FM?

[Pulled from tapes found in the back corners of closets and dusty shoe boxes, this is the first in a series of releases – songs long neglected, but never forgotten. With the Archive Series, Sam Beam (Iron & Wine) will be gathering otherwise unreleased home recordings, covers, and live sets from his entire career and releasing them on his own label, Black Cricket Recording Co. The songs on Volume No. 1 came to life at the same time as those selected for The Creek Drank the Cradle. The songs on Creek were only 11 of the many performed and recorded by Iron & Wine at home on a 4-track cassette. While some of this material has been widely bootlegged, it has never received a widespread or proper release until now.]

[24 year old Calvin Arsenia, who recently returned home to Kansas City after living and performing in Edinburgh, Scotland. Arsenia stands at 6 foot 5 inches, where he delivers soulful and powerful vocals with his multi-octave range, while also playing piano, guitar, and harp. A songwriter, producer, and engineer, Calvin Arsenia made his performance debut in early 2010 and since then has written, arranged and produced 5 EPs. In April, 2014, he released an intimate 7-song EP called “Moments” and now is set to release a new collaborative EP called, “Prose.” Calvin Arsenia played live on the show on October 22.]

[Dustin Rapier was born into a musical family in Northwest Arkansas. His debut album “Songs About No One” was released July 23, 2012. Crystal Clayton

Kansas City based singer/songwriter, Crystal Clayton has been performing since she was 7 years old. She has performed The New Theatre in Overland Park and for The Lyric Opera of Kansas City. She wrote her first song when she was 15. She has released three original singles, digitally, available on iTunes. She plays with a five-piece band of local musicians and has been performing at venues all over KC as well as local festivals in the area. Crystal has sang on tracks with Prozak and Ces Cru (part of Tech N9ne’s label, Strange Music) and she is currently working with her new band Vetta, recording in the studio for their debut EP to be released this year.

The new band is called Vetta, and the group includes: Tayler Spencer – Guitar, Jordan Caldwell – Cajon & Percussion, Sean Bird – Bass Guitar, and Daniel Clayton – Synthesizers

10. Sleater-Kinney – “Surface Envy”
from: No Cities To Love / Sub Pop Records / January 20, 2015
[8th studio album from Sleater-Kinney, formed in early 1994 in Olympia, Washington, by Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein. The group’s name is derived from Sleater Kinney Road, Interstate 5 exit number 108 in Lacey, Washington, the location of one of their early practice spaces. Tucker was formerly in the influential riot grrrl band Heavens to Betsy, while Brownstein was formerly in the queercore band Excuse 17. They often played at gigs together and formed Sleater-Kinney as a side-project from their respective bands. When Heavens to Betsy and Excuse 17 disbanded, Sleater-Kinney became their primary focus. Janet Weiss of Quasi is the band’s longest lasting and final drummer, though Sleater-Kinney has had other drummers, including Lora Macfarlane, Misty Farrell, and Toni Gogin. Upon Tucker’s graduation from The Evergreen State College (where Brownstein remained a student for three more years), she and then-girlfriend Brownstein took a trip to Australia in early 1994. Their last day there, they stayed up all night recording what would become their self-titled debut album. It was released the following spring. They followed this with Call the Doctor (1996) and Dig Me Out (1997), and became critical darlings. The lineup features: Corin Tucker (vocals and guitar), Carrie Brownstein (guitar and vocals), and Janet Weiss (drums).]

Singer, songwriter, artist, filmmaker, puppeteer, ring-leader Mikal Shapiro studied Film History, Film, and Writing at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York. She received her MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago studying Film, Video, New Media, and Animation. Her full length solo releases “The Crow The Lark And The Loon from 2008, and “For Good” from 2010 have been acclaimed by local music writers. Mikal is the creator of the web television project, “Go! Go! Global Girls.” She has also created music videos for Dead Voices and Folkicide. Mikal Shapiro is also a curator, producer and co-host of River Trade Radio. Aside from performing as a solo artist Mikal also performs with Chad Brothers of the band Old Sound, she is a member of the 4-piece band Royalphonic, and with Kasey Rausch as Partners in Glory. Kasey and Mikal are also the co-hosts / co-producers of River Trade Radio airing every Sunday morning 9 to 11:00 on 90.1 FM KKFI. Her new full length recording, The Musical is about to be released.

Mikal co-produced Kasey Rausch’s new recording Guitar in Hand. Kasey gave Mikal her first guitar and taught Mikal her first chord.

The Musical is Mikal’s third full length solo release. She also has previously recorded albums with the bands: Eudora and Boon.

The Musical is a collection of stories and characters; an intersection between popular music, classical songwriting and personal mythologies. Pronouns shift between “them” and “us,” “you” and “me.” Tracks jump influences from jazz, folk, and blues to rock, country and psychedelia.

The core band includes a line-up of local greats:

Johnny Hamil (Mr. Marco’s V7/The Malachy Papers) upright & electric bass,
Matt Richey (Dead Voices/Grisly Hand) on drums
Chad Brothers (Old Sound/Supermassive Black Holes) on electric guitar / harmony vocals.
Emily Tummons also lends her voice to the mix creating lush three part harmonies that weave throughout the album.

Long time friend and collaborator Rachel Gaither (Tullamore/The Boon) stepped in to sing and play violin on the song “Chimo.”

Recorded, mixed and mastered by Joel Nanos at Element Studios, it displays a full spectrum of production. Some tracks are deep and watery. Others wide and epic.

“Mikal Shapiro: The Musical” has two acts–an A-side and a B-side. The songs are engineered for long play off a 12” vinyl record on a hi-fidelity stereo system. Mikal plans to release The Musical on vinyl which cost a lot more to accomplish, so she has launched a Kickstarter campaign to cover the basic costs of producing this record on vinyl.

River Trade Radio has been on the air on 90.1 FM since March of 2014 and has quickly developed a loyal listenership.

Mikal Shapiro is a “renaissance woman” because she is involved in many creative projects from radio, to film, to visual arts, to music.
