[The 34th studio album in 36 years from the prolific master of music. On April 18, 2014, Prince released a new single entitled, “The Breakdown”. Along with news that a new album was in the works, an expanded edition of Purple Rain would be released for the 30th anniversary, and he has re-signed with his former label, Warner Bros. Records after an 18-year split. He also gained the rights to his master recordings from the 1980s, which had been a point of contention for his initial split with the major label.]

2. The Breeders – “Invisible Man”

[“Last Splash was the Breeders 3rd studio release. The band formed in 1988 by Kim Deal of the Pixies and Throwing Muses’ Tanya Donelly. The current line-up consists of the original Last Splash formation. Kim Deal (vocals and guitar), her twin sister Kelley Deal (vocals and guitar), Jim Macpherson (drums) and Josephine Wiggs (bass). The band’s website, Breedersdigest.net reports that Since completing their eight-month, 60-date world tour performing Last Splash, they’ve been working on new material. This September, the band will debut a selection of new songs with a series of dates leading up to a show at the Hollywood Bowl where—joined by Carrie Bradley—we’ll share the stage with Neutral Milk Hotel.]

Mũcũgũ Wahome and musicians from Mount Veritas Orchestra: Sarah Preston, Evan Hoffman, and Aryana Nemate joined us to share new recordings and live performances from “Water Is Food” a recording to benefit: Water.org and Cultivate Kansas City. We are premiered the music from “IRIO,” the Food Album. (Music from “MAJI” the Water Album premiered on River Trade Radio, Aug. 31.)

Also joining us was, Ami Freeberg of Cultivate KC.

Mũcũgũ Wahome told us how he discovered the music of Metatone from one of the band’s members Rabbit Killer aka Mark Smeltzer who he met at the Rural Grit happy Hour at The Brick.

Mũcũgũ Wahome, told us about how the polyrhythms of Metatone reminded him at the Kikuyu music of Kenya.

Metatone’s May 14, 2013 release called “Metatone” was recorded & mixed by Metatone from 2012 to 2013. With songs written by J. Ashley Miller & Metatone. The album’s credits: J. Cultivate KC is interested in helping to support sustainable, community- engaged farms are scattered throughout the metro, providing an abundance of fresh and healthy food to city residents. There are opportunities for people to earn income through farming. Unused spaces are turned to food producing farms and gardens, and appropriately scaled agriculture is understood and practiced as an integral part of a beautiful, lively, and healthy neighborhood.

[Jamie Searle won critical acclaim as lead vocalist and songwriter for the band It’s Over who won a Pitch Music Award for Best Live Act. He left It’s Over to concentrate on his music education as a student of UMKC’s Conservatory of Music where he has immersed himself in musical theory, compostion, harmonic structure, melody. Now out of school, Jamie spent a year and a half recording the full length release of material he composed for a large ensemble of musicians. The result is: “Violet Music Vol. 1” the debut full length release from Jamie’s band, My Brothers & Sisters, a collective of at times up to 18 musicians, including a strings, horns, percussionists, bass, keyboards, vocalists, and back-up vocalists, and Jamie on vocals, guitar and conducting.]

AY-MusiK was a contestant in 2012 on the X Factor receiving 4 Yes’ votes from celeb­rity judges L.A. Reid, Britney Spears, Louis Walsh, & Demi Lovato. [Influenced by traditional Mariachi music, Maria The Mexican is a hybrid of Mexican folklore and Rock. For ten years, Teresa and Maria Elena Cuevas performed with Marachi Estrella founded by their grandmother Teresa Cuevas in 1970. As one of the first all female mariachi bands in the country, Maria Teresa Alonzo Cuevas is a pioneer in the Hispanic musical community. Her band flourished in the 80s but was struck by tragedy when four of the seven members were killed in the Hyatt Skywalk collapse in 1981. Once Teresa recovered she began teaching her grandchildren Mariachi music. In 2000, Teresa and Maria began exploring other genres of music while simultaneously co-directing Mariachi Estrella. Today the fusion of Maria The Mexican is mixed with a touch of blues, soul, funk, and rock n’ roll enhanced by the musical knowledge and sounds of Garrett Nordstrom.]

[From Berwangermusic.com: “Josh Berwanger could easily be considered a veteran of the rock and roll wars. He first made a name for himself as a member of The Anniversary, a seminal Kansas band that released two glorious albums (2000’s Designing a Nervous Breakdown and 2002’s Your Majesty) and selling over 100,000 records before imploding in a breakup of Fleetwood Mac-style proportions while attempting to tour Japan. Undeterred, Berwanger put together a new band—a country-rock outfit called The Only Children–and would go on to release two criminally underrated records (2004’s Change of Living and 2007’s Keeper of Youth) before pulling the plug on that project and taking a job doing the next most logical thing possible– coaching high school basketball in Lawrence, Kansas. For the recording of Strange Stains, Berwanger joined forces with old pal (and original drummer for The Anniversary) Michael Hutcherson, who brought not only brought the rhythm to the record, but a wonderful familiarity as well. “Josh and I met in 1996 while playing in local Kansas City pop punk bands,” recalls Hutcherson, “I am honored to be making music with Josh again. For all that’s changed in our lives over the years, we’ve still got a symbiotic musical relationship. No questions, no egos, just rock and roll. 3. Phil Neal & The Wornalls – “Out Of Touch”

[Veteran singer songwriter, and rock and roller, Phil Neal’s early eighties band, The Artists, had a video in rotation on MTV, critical acclaim, and national management. When the band fell apart, Phil continued on, writing songs, and playing for over three decades, with several different bands, all while raising a family, and making a home, here in Kansas City. The songwriter has written dozens, of what he calls “Midwestern Rock” numbers. The Wornalls are the band Phil wanted, to bring his songs to life. Doug Gunn on drums, Danko Loftus on bass, Gary Paredes on guitar, Ben Eisiminger on keyboard, and Bruce Sidener on guitar, they are more than a band to Phil, they’re old friends.]

[Jon Dee Graham is a musician, guitarist and songwriter from Austin, Texas. He was born February 28, 1959. Graham was named the Austin Musician of the Year during the South by Southwest (SXSW) music conference in 2006. He was inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame three times: as a solo artist in 2000, again in 2008 as a member of The Skunks, and again in 2009 as a member of the True Believers.] [Jon Dee Graham played the Folk Alliance International with a special set with his 13 year old son William.]

Kansas City based, professional actor, Robert Gibby Brand, has a long and distinguished resume. He has performed with the Kansas City Lyric Opera, Quality Hill Playhouse, Actors’ Theatre of Kansas City, the New Theatre, the Unicorn Theater, Bach Aria Soloists, The Kansas City Public Library, The Kansas City Rep, and he has been a frequent actor with the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival. He joins us today to talk about Spinning Tree Theatre’s KC Premiere of “Ghost-Writer,” playing August 22 through September 7, at Quality Hill Playhouse, starring Robert Gibby Brand, Katie Kalahurka, and Jeannie Blau, directed by Michael Grayman.

Robert Gibby Brand has worked on stage at Quality Hill Playhouse, but this is his first show with Spinning Tree Theatre, and this is Spinning Tree Theatre’s first show at Quality Hill Playhouse, which seems like a good fit for this show.

Ghost-Writer is a new play written by Michael Hollinger that takes place in 1919

Robert Gibby Brand plays the novelist Franklin Woolsey who dies mid-sentence.

Katie Kalahurka plays Myra Babbage, devoted typist of two decades to the novelist who sits at her typewriter taking dictation from beyond. Woolsey is still with her.

and Jeannie Blau, plays Vivian Woolsey, widow of Franklin, not very pleased about Myra’s claiming to still hear Franklin Woolsey’s voice. She worries this woman may exploit her dead husband’s name or damage his literary standing with whatever she completes.

Ghost-Writer is loosely based on Theodora Bosanquet, who was secretary to Henry James from 1907 until his death in 1916. She went on to write her own literary histories after that, but certainly not in the voice of her former employer.

Dustin Rapier was born into a musical family in Northwest Arkansas. His debut album “Songs About No One” was released July 23, 2012. The album began in a college dorm room at a small private college. After trying a few things using school recording equipment, Dustin fell in love with the recording process. He eventually created Fly Penguin Records. Now in Kansas City, Dustin played a midwest album release tour for his latest release, as well as steady gigs at Californos, The Point, Kill Devil Club, restaurants, piano lounges, and bars all over the Midwest, where Dustin on piano plays everyone from Earth Wind & Fire, to Lana Del Rey, and the Jackson 5. Dustin’s latest shows feature live looping and sampling to craft a mesmerizing, “something from nothing” performance. Dustin released his second full-length album, “Spectrum” in June.

“Spectrum” is the true story of Dustin’s journey from a place of loneliness, self-doubt and despair in an unfamiliar city to a place of happiness, self-affirmation and fulfillment. The first single released from the album, “One More Chance” offers a snapshot of this journey, chronicling Dustin’s victory over a near suicide attempt in fall of 2013. “Spectrum” is a message of hope; that for every stormy season, there is light on the other side. That each of us has a purpose, even though it may not always be clear; that you matter simply because you exist.

We sent it out to a few labels and received responses along the lines of, “this is completely unmarketable” and, “I just don’t think I can do the packaging you guys want.” Then I got busy with Lips stuff and Brodie was busy with Be/Non and his lovely wife and kids and we just sort of left it. We’ve been talking about recording some new stuff, which reminded us that we had this just sitting around. Even though there are some songs I think I could mix better now and some other things that we would do differently were we to record it today, we decided to just let it stand as the thing we did then and have put it up on Bandcamp for your “enjoyment”. I’m honestly really proud of it and had a blast making it. We had no agenda when we started recording other than, “dammit, we’ve been talking about recording forever, so let’s just fucking do it” and it just became what it became. But I’m glad it’s now available for people to love, like, hate or not particularly care about and I’m looking forward to our next batch of recordings. Andrew Hunt has been living in Nashville for the past three years playing various roles in different bands and traveling the country spreading the good word of traditional country music. His own Nashville based, 6-piece country western band Johnny Appleseed comes to Kansas this week to play Topeka at the American Legion Hall post 400, Friday, August 15, 8:00pm, with The Top City Ramblers and Luke Bell. Johnny Appleseed released their debut EP earlier this year.

Johnny Appleseed was founded in 2012 by a group of young musicians in Nashville, Tennessee with:

[Sarah Jaffe was born January 29, 1986, and she is a singer-songwriter from Denton, Texas. Jaffe self-released her first EP titled Even Born Again, which was recognized by Rolling Stone and the Dallas Observer.(She gave us a vinyl copy). In late 2009, she was signed to Kirtland Records and released her first full-length album, Suburban Nature, in May 2010. She has previously toured with Lou Barlow, (we saw her with Lou at the recordBar!!!!) Norah Jones, Blitzen Trapper and Chelsea Wolfe, as well as fellow bands Midlake, Old 97’s and Centro-matic. In 2011, she released The Way Sound Leaves a Room, which was touted as an EP that included a DVD of her performance at Wyly Theatre in Dallas that February. This release included a cover of a Drake song: “Shut it Down.”.It was with this release that she started moving away from an acoustic folk sound to a more orchestral indie rock sound, but it was only a hint at what was to come. In 2012, she opened on the New Multitudes Tour where she introduced fans to songs from her upcoming album. On April 21, she dropped her latest LP: The Body Wins, produced by John Congleton. On December 11, 2012, she performed “Talk”, a single from that album, on Jimmy Kimmel Live. In 2013, she featured uncredited vocals on Eminem’s song “Bad Guy” off his album The Marshall Mathers LP 2.]

[Daniel Pujol is based in Nashville, Tennessee. Originally from Tullahoma, TennesseeA kludge is: “A clumsy or inelegant solution to a problem.” “An ill assorted collection of poorly matching parts, forming a distressing whole.” “A crock that works.”In February of 2013, Daniel Pujol set out to write and record the follow-up to his debut album, 2012’s UNITED STATES OF BEING. Pujol and producer Doni Shroader set up shop in Mt. Juliet, TN at The Place: a suicide-prevention center for teens located in a strip mall. They used largely borrowed and donated gear, recording every day from 5pm until 6am, all the while breaking down and setting up the temporary studio every day between office hours. Mixing took place during the building of Battletapes, a two car garage that was in the midst of being converted into an acoustically treated, professional grade tracking room; building permit, construction workers, and all. Following four months of vampiric living and working around conflicting schedules/eccentricities (the band, the engineers, the sun), Daniel, Doni, and Battletapes had finished the album they had been working towards. Recording and mixing happened in a “non-location” where things were being built or set up, in order to work on the album, working around the obstacles the location presented. [7th studio release from Daniel Victor Snaith, born 1978, a Canadian composer, musician and recording artist who records and performs under stage names Caribou, Manitoba and Daphni. Snaith originally recorded under the stage name Manitoba, but after being threatened with a lawsuit by Richard “Handsome Dick” Manitoba, formerly of punk band The Dictators, Snaith changed his performance name to Caribou. Snaith’s previous full-length albums were then re-released under the new moniker, and The Milk of Human Kindness was released in 2005 by Domino. Snaith said that the situation was “like The Smiths suing John Smith or something”. In 2005, Snaith received a doctorate in mathematics from Imperial College London, for work on Overconvergent Siegel Modular Symbols under Kevin Buzzard. When playing gigs, Snaith usually performs with a live band and plays percussion. Live shows also often include complex video projections on a large screen, as captured in a DVD released in November 2005. “[I]n music I will have an idea to put some different sounds together or a melody that meshes with a chord sequence or a sonic mood,” said Snaith in an interview. “I’m not the type of person who takes physical things apart and plays around with them, but I like taking mental ideas apart and playing around with them. That’s what appeals to me about what I’ve spent my life doing.”]

8. Sweet Exorcist – “Testone”

[Sweet Exorcist was named after a Curtis Mayfield track, and was the project of Sheffield based musicians Richard H. Kirk (Cabaret Voltaire) and Richard ‘DJ Parrot’ Barratt. Kirk and Barratt knew each other since the mid-1980s. Barratt had already supported a Cabaret Voltaire British tour in 1986. After both worked on several tracks together Parrot suggested making a club track with studio test tones. In the January of 1990 the tracks were released as Testone on Warp Records. It defined the bleep techno sound, by making playful use of sampled sounds from Yellow Magic Orchestra’s Computer Game (1978) and the film Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977). The next release was Clonk, also on Warp. For both singles remix versions were released. 2011 saw the release of the compilation album RetroActivity on Warp Records.]

[Death is a garage rock and protopunk band formed in Detroit, Michigan in 1971 by brothers Bobby (bass, vocals), David (guitar), and Dannis (drums) Hackney. The trio started out as a funk band but switched to rock after seeing a concert by The Who. Seeing Alice Cooper play was also an inspiration. Music critic Peter Margasak retrospectively wrote that David “pushed the group in a hard-rock direction that presaged punk, and while this certainly didn’t help them find a following in the mid-70s, today it makes them look like visionaries.” In 1975 at Detroit’s United Sound Studios with engineer Jim Vitti, they recorded seven songs written by David and Bobby. According to the Hackney family, Columbia Records president Clive Davis funded the recording sessions, but implored the band to change its name to something more commercially palatable than Death. When the Hackneys refused, Davis ceased his support. The band only recorded seven songs instead of the planned dozen. The following year they self-released (on their label Tryangle) a single taken from the sessions: “Politicians in My Eyes” b/w “Keep on Knocking,” in a run of just 500 copies. The band broke up by 1977 but reformed in 2009 when the Drag City label released their 70s demos for the first time.]

[Clairy Browne & The Bangin’ Rackettes are a 9 piece soul band from Melbourne, Australia that formed in 2009. The band is fronted by lead vocalist Clairy Browne and backed by Camilla McKewen, Loretta Miller and Ruby Jones (The Bangin’ Rackettes) along with Darcy McNulty (Saxophone), Peter Bee (Guitar), Jules Pascoe (Bass), Gabriel Strangio (Keyboards) and Nick Martyn (Drums). The band’s debut album Baby Caught the Bus was released in Australia (Independent) in 2011 and in the US (Vanguard Records) in 2013, and features the lead single “Love Letter”.]

[Lady is Nicole Monique Wray and her band, and also the title of her debut album. At 17, Nicole was the first artist signed to Missy Elliot’s Goldmind Records. In 1998, her debut single, “Make It Hot,” would go on to reach certified gold status. Her voice would later lend itself to features and hit singles by Missy Elliott, Cam’ron, Kid Cudi and to The Black Keys’ critically acclaimed project, Blackroc. She was then enlisted to lend background vocals on their seventh studio LP, Brothers. The Akron, Ohio duo encouraged Nicole to expand and mature as a vocalist and musician and from this experience rose a Phoenix, rose a Lady.]

Writer, actor, musician, artist, teacher, singer, songwriter – Vi Tran was born near Saigon, Vietnam and raised in southwestern Kansas. He began performing as a toddler in the refugee camps of southeast Asia. Vi has appeared in theatres all across Kansas City as an actor, has also become a big part of the Kansas City Music Scene.
