First recording date: August 22, 2012, final mastering date: February 5, 2013. Cover art, layout and design by Brodie (at UNiPEGaDONG) …Notes from Kliph: Brodie Ayala and I made this record between August of 2012 and February of 2013. We sent it out to a few labels and received responses along the lines of, “this is completely unmarketable” and, “I just don’t think I can do the packaging you guys want.” Then I got busy with Lips stuff and Brodie was busy with Be/Non and his lovely wife and kids and we just sort of left it. We’ve been talking about recording some new stuff, which reminded us that we had this just sitting around. Even though there are some songs I think I could mix better now and some other things that we would do differently were we to record it today, we decided to just let it stand as the thing we did then and have put it up on Bandcamp for your “enjoyment”. I’m honestly really proud of it and had a blast making it. We had no agenda when we started recording other than, “dammit, we’ve been talking about recording forever, so let’s just fucking do it” and it just became what it became. But I’m glad it’s now available for people to love, like, hate or not particularly care about and I’m looking forward to our next batch of recordings. Special thanks to Doug McKinney, Kelli Mayo, Peyton Bighorse and Nanci Lee Ayala Rush for playing on it as well. Andrew Hunt has been living in Nashville for the past three years playing various roles in different bands and traveling the country spreading the good word of traditional country music. His own Nashville based, 6-piece country western band Johnny Appleseed comes to Kansas this week to play Topeka at the American Legion Hall post 400, Friday, August 15, 8:00pm, with The Top City Ramblers and Luke Bell. Johnny Appleseed released their debut EP earlier this year.

Johnny Appleseed was founded in 2012 by a group of young musicians in Nashville, Tennessee with:

Andrew Hunt on vocals and guitars
Brett Resnick on pedal steel
Mark Sloan on guitars / vocals
Andrew Squire on drums.

Johnny Appleseed draws their influence from classic sounds of Bob Willsʼ western swing, Ray Priceʼs country shuffles, Elvisʼ early hard hitting rockabilly, and Count Basieʼs big band swing eras. The Band aims to capture the sounds and styles, mix it all up.

Johnny Applesee’s first EP features three original songs recorded to vintage 1-inch tape at Americana music luminary Tony Joe Whiteʼs private studio.

Andrew Huntʼs crooning vocals hearken back to country stars of eras past, with lyrics and song craft that cut with the edge of modernity. Guitarist Mark Sloan, fiddle player Casey Driscoll and Brett Resnick on the pedal steel each represent the best of their respective instrument the burgeoning young Nashville music scene has to offer. Put them all on one stage, ripping solos and fantastic arrangements abound with this “hillbilly orchestra.”

10. Sarah Jaffe – “Leaving The Planet”

[Sarah Jaffe was born January 29, 1986, and she is a singer-songwriter from Denton, Texas. Jaffe self-released her first EP titled Even Born Again, which was recognized by Rolling Stone and the Dallas Observer.(She gave us a vinyl copy). In late 2009, she was signed to Kirtland Records and released her first full-length album, Suburban Nature, in May 2010. She has previously toured with Lou Barlow, (we saw her with Lou at the recordBar!!!!) Norah Jones, Blitzen Trapper and Chelsea Wolfe, as well as fellow bands Midlake, Old 97’s and Centro-matic. In 2011, she released The Way Sound Leaves a Room, which was touted as an EP that included a DVD of her performance at Wyly Theatre in Dallas that February. This release included a cover of a Drake song: “Shut it Down.”.It was with this release that she started moving away from an acoustic folk sound to a more orchestral indie rock sound, but it was only a hint at what was to come. In 2012, she opened on the New Multitudes Tour where she introduced fans to songs from her upcoming album. On April 21, she dropped her latest LP: The Body Wins, produced by John Congleton. On December 11, 2012, she performed “Talk”, a single from that album, on Jimmy Kimmel Live. In 2013, she featured uncredited vocals on Eminem’s song “Bad Guy” off his album The Marshall Mathers LP 2.]

11. PUJOL – “Circles”

[Daniel Pujol is based in Nashville, Tennessee. Originally from Tullahoma, TennesseeA kludge is: “A clumsy or inelegant solution to a problem.” “An ill assorted collection of poorly matching parts, forming a distressing whole.” “A crock that works.”In February of 2013, Daniel Pujol set out to write and record the follow-up to his debut album, 2012’s UNITED STATES OF BEING. Pujol and producer Doni Shroader set up shop in Mt. Juliet, TN at The Place: a suicide-prevention center for teens located in a strip mall. They used largely borrowed and donated gear, recording every day from 5pm until 6am, all the while breaking down and setting up the temporary studio every day between office hours. Mixing took place during the building of Battletapes, a two car garage that was in the midst of being converted into an acoustically treated, professional grade tracking room; building permit, construction workers, and all. Following four months of vampiric living and working around conflicting schedules/eccentricities (the band, the engineers, the sun), Daniel, Doni, and Battletapes had finished the album they had been working towards. Recording and mixing happened in a “non-location” where things were being built or set up, in order to work on the album, working around the obstacles the location presented. 12. Spoon – “Do You”

[8th studio album from indie rock band Spoon, formed in Austin, Texas in 1993, by lead singer and guitarist Britt Daniel and drummer Jim Eno, after the two met as members of The Alien Beats. The name Spoon was chosen to honor the 1970s German avant-garde band Can, whose hit song “Spoon” was the theme song to the 1985 movie Das Messer aka Jagged Edge in the United States. The new record is the band’s first album to feature new member Alex Fischel, who plays keyboards and guitar.]

13. Eels – “Where I’m From”

[11th studio album from indie band Eels. The album was produced by band leader Mark Oliver Everett. Eels were formed in California in1995 by singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mark Oliver Everett, better known as “E” (son of famous physicist Hugh Everett III). Band members have changed across the years, both in the studio and on stage, making Everett the only official member for the most of the band’s work. Often filled with themes about family, death and lost love, Eels’ music straddles a wide range of genres, which is evidenced by the distinct musical style of every album.]

The 15 piece ensemble welcomed 6 additional musicians to record “Shelf Life,” their 2nd full-length release, 2 years in the making. Recorded live at the Cooler Studio in KCK, with Chad Meise, and mastered by Collin Jordan at the Boiler Room in Chicago, using both vintage analog and modern digital technologies. The album was released on CD and as a limited edition collectible vinyl LP at local music stores, and also available on iTunes. 15. The Baseball Project – “They Played Baseball”

[A supergroup composed of Peter Buck, Mike Mills, Scott McCaughey, Steve Wynn & Linda Pitmon formed in 2007. They came together from discussions between McCaughey & Wynn at R.E.M.’s March 21, 2007 induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in NYC. They invited Buck to play bass & Pitmon on drums & recorded their first album, Volume 1: Frozen Ropes & Dying Quails later that year. Buck & McCaughey have previously played together in Robyn Hitchcock and The Venus 3, The Minus 5, R.E.M., & Tuatara. Britt Adair plays lead guitar for the band The Bad Idea’s. She organizes bands and shows at Vandals at Black and Gold Tavern, She works at Mills Record Company, she is an artist and film maker and huge nuturer of Kansa City Punk Music Scene.

Joining Britt is Michelle Wyssman who works at Black and Gold Tavern which is open from 10:00 am to 3:00 am Monday through Saturdays, and on Sunday serving lunch and dinner, and serving live music. Michelle convinced the owners of Black and Gold to create the performance venue Vandals, located at the back of Black & Gold Tavern as a home for Rock, Punk, and Metal shows and she brought Britt on to help.

23. The Coathangers – “Springfield Cannonball”

[Suck My Shirt is the 4th studio release from The Coathangers, a punk group formed in Atlanta, in 2006 as a joke. After playing a house show, they were asked to open for The Hiss on the strength of their performance. The name was chosen for its vulgarity, an irreverent take on abortions, though all band members are pro-choice. In 2011, they released their third album, Larceny and Old Lace for Suicide Squeeze Records, to generally positive reviews. They have opened in New York City for the Black Lips.]

[7th studio release from Daniel Victor Snaith, born 1978, a Canadian composer, musician and recording artist who records and performs under stage names Caribou, Manitoba and Daphni. Snaith originally recorded under the stage name Manitoba, but after being threatened with a lawsuit by Richard “Handsome Dick” Manitoba, formerly of punk band The Dictators, Snaith changed his performance name to Caribou. Snaith’s previous full-length albums were then re-released under the new moniker, and The Milk of Human Kindness was released in 2005 by Domino. Snaith said that the situation was “like The Smiths suing John Smith or something”. In 2005, Snaith received a doctorate in mathematics from Imperial College London, for work on Overconvergent Siegel Modular Symbols under Kevin Buzzard. When playing gigs, Snaith usually performs with a live band and plays percussion. Live shows also often include complex video projections on a large screen, as captured in a DVD released in November 2005. “[I]n music I will have an idea to put some different sounds together or a melody that meshes with a chord sequence or a sonic mood,” said Snaith in an interview. “I’m not the type of person who takes physical things apart and plays around with them, but I like taking mental ideas apart and playing around with them. That’s what appeals to me about what I’ve spent my life doing.”]

4. Stoney & The Jagged Edge – “Can’t Find the Key”

Contemporaries of the MC5 and Stooges, the Edge were equally as cutting edge, with a wild stage presence and notorious, enigmatic frontman in Dave “Stoney” Mazar. The quartet burned briefly but fiercely between early 1967 and late 1968, leaving only some indelible memories with the few that witnessed them in action, and one studio session supervised by Holland at Detroit’s United Sound, which in the ensuing decades was believed lost. [the 11th studio album from Meshell Ndegeocello a singer-songwriter, rapper, bassist, and vocalist. Her music incorporates a wide variety of influences, including funk, soul, hip hop, reggae, R&B, rock, and jazz. She has received significant critical acclaim throughout her career, and has had ten career Grammy Award nominations.Named Michelle Lynn Johnson at birth,August 29, 1968, Ndegeocello adopted her surname at the age of 17, which she says means “free like a bird” in Swahili. Meshell Ndegeocello is pronounced Mee-shell N-deh-gay-o-chel-o. Early pressings of Plantation Lullabies were stickered with the instructions. 8. Sweet Exorcist – “Testone”

[Sweet Exorcist was named after a Curtis Mayfield track, and was the project of Sheffield based musicians Richard H. Kirk (Cabaret Voltaire) and Richard ‘DJ Parrot’ Barratt. Kirk and Barratt knew each other since the mid-1980s. Barratt had already supported a Cabaret Voltaire British tour in 1986. After both worked on several tracks together Parrot suggested making a club track with studio test tones. In the January of 1990 the tracks were released as Testone on Warp Records. It defined the bleep techno sound, by making playful use of sampled sounds from Yellow Magic Orchestra’s Computer Game (1978) and the film Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977). The next release was Clonk, also on Warp. For both singles remix versions were released. 2011 saw the release of the compilation album RetroActivity on Warp Records.]

[Death is a garage rock and protopunk band formed in Detroit, Michigan in 1971 by brothers Bobby (bass, vocals), David (guitar), and Dannis (drums) Hackney. The trio started out as a funk band but switched to rock after seeing a concert by The Who. Seeing Alice Cooper play was also an inspiration. Music critic Peter Margasak retrospectively wrote that David “pushed the group in a hard-rock direction that presaged punk, and while this certainly didn’t help them find a following in the mid-70s, today it makes them look like visionaries.” In 1975 at Detroit’s United Sound Studios with engineer Jim Vitti, they recorded seven songs written by David and Bobby. According to the Hackney family, Columbia Records president Clive Davis funded the recording sessions, but implored the band to change its name to something more commercially palatable than Death. When the Hackneys refused, Davis ceased his support. The band only recorded seven songs instead of the planned dozen. The following year they self-released (on their label Tryangle) a single taken from the sessions: “Politicians in My Eyes” b/w “Keep on Knocking,” in a run of just 500 copies. The band broke up by 1977 but reformed in 2009 when the Drag City label released their 70s demos for the first time.]

[Clairy Browne & The Bangin’ Rackettes are a 9 piece soul band from Melbourne, Australia that formed in 2009. The band is fronted by lead vocalist Clairy Browne and backed by Camilla McKewen, Loretta Miller and Ruby Jones (The Bangin’ Rackettes) along with Darcy McNulty (Saxophone), Peter Bee (Guitar), Jules Pascoe (Bass), Gabriel Strangio (Keyboards) and Nick Martyn (Drums). The band’s debut album Baby Caught the Bus was released in Australia (Independent) in 2011 and in the US (Vanguard Records) in 2013, and features the lead single “Love Letter”.]

We’ve watched the band Rev Gusto grow from a band formed by high school classmates into a critically acclaimed area band that has just signed with High Dive Records and will be putting out a full length release in the fall. Rev Gusto played our Wednesday MidDay Medley Day Party for The Middle of The Map Fest this year at Westport Saloon, they played the MidCoast Takeover at SXSW in Austin, and they’ve been nominated for a Pitch Music Award. The band is: Jerry Frederick on Vocals & Guitar, Sam Frederick on Bass, Shaun Crowley on Guitar, Peter Beatty on guitar Quinn Hernandez on Drums. Rev Gusto’s debut EP was recorded at Element Recording.

Full disclosure. I first met Rev Gusto at the Youth Volunteer Corps 4th Annual KC Metro Youth Battle of the Bands on March 27, 2010. Jerry, Sam and Quinn were in the band at that time with Mitch Hecht and Taylor McHenry. All members were in high school. There were 13 bands in the competition. I was a judge with Skid Roadie from the Fox. Rev Gusto won first place! I invited the band to play LIVE on the radio. Then last summer, I was at an event at Mills Record Company and members of Rev Gusto came in and I didn’t recognize them. It had been 3 years. Quinn’s hair had grown. Apparently I’m still having problems, because for the first 5 minutes of the interview I called Shaun Sam.

Jerry Frederick graduated from St. James Academy in Lenexa in 2010 and started Rev Gusto in 2010 with brother, Sam, who plays bass, and drummer Quinn Hernandez, a fellow St. James alum. The band regrouped in early 2012, with a different lineup. They added two more St. James alums: Shaun Crowley and Peter Beatty, who play guitar, keyboards and the occasional trumpet.

Bassist Sam Frederick recently turned 21. Guitarist Shaun Crowley and keyboardist Peter Beatty are both 19. Drummer Quinn Hernandez and singer-guitarist Jerry Frederick are 22

Shaun Crowley is classically trained and has been enrolled in the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory.

The Name: Reverent Gusto as inspired by a priest Jerry knew from Rockhust High, who used to encourage people to sing with ‘reverent gusto.’

We started the segment with the bands 7″ 45 rpm vinyl release from the Too Much Rock Series.

Too Much Rock is a music blog site created by Sid Sowder in 1997, as a place where he could document his life as it relates to music. Sid posts his photos and videos and comments of the live music shows he attends. The site is not created as a for profit venture.

The Too Much Rock Single Series is a collection of 45 RPM singles that marry great songs with great bands all for the love of vinyl. Each old-school two-song single features one unique song pared with one cover chosen by Too Much Rock. 500 limited edition copies are pressed and given to the band, to sell as merchandise at shows and at local record stores.
So far, their have been three Too Much Rock 7″ Single Releases.

The single was released on Record Store Day at Mills Record Company.

Sam Frederick and Jerry Frederick are originally from Leawood, Quinn Hernandez of Kansas City, Kan., Shaun Crowley of De Soto and Peter Beatty of Bonner Springs. Most of the band currently live together in a house

The band has been compared to The Kinks. In a Sept. 4, 2013 Interview for Ink KC, Jerry Frederick told music writer Tim Finn, “Ray Davies does this songwriting class every couple of years over in England,” he said “He picks 12 people from all over the world, and for two weeks he teaches you about songwriting. I’m a big Kinks fan, so I entered some of my songs and got accepted.” “He was really encouraging,” Frederick said. “He said he really liked my songs and told me to keep working at it. So I was like, ‘OK, if you say so, Ray Davies.’”

In a Sept. 4, 2013 Interview for Ink KC Jerry Frederick told music writer Tim Finn, “Instead of going out on weekends, I like to sit in my room and listen to all kinds of music,” he said. “I really like that era of music, sunshine pop and old soul.” He was also influenced, he said, by a grandmother who wrote musicals, performed on Broadway and toured Europe. “She loved Cole Porter, so I heard a lot of that growing up, too,” he said.

By the time he was 14 his brother and sisters had taken him to see Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, the Spinners, the Four Tops, and The Temptations. Matt started playing bass at the age of 15, and soon discovered Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Neil Young and The Stones. Matt is also a member of several legendary KC based bands: The Doo-Dads, Midtown Quartet and The Pedaljets. For the past 25 years Matt Kesler has been owner of The Midwestern Musical Co. currently located at 1830 Locust, in the Crossroads District of KCMO. Matt Kesler joins us for our second hour to share music and stories about the 25th Anniversary of The Midwestern Musical Company. Matt Kesler, founded MMC in 1989 with Jim Strahm, who died in 2000. Kesler has kept the shop going for 14 years in memory of his friend, colleague and fellow musician. (Matt told Natalie Gallagher in the Pitch:)”Jim was the guy in Midwestern Music that’d talk your ear off. He was a character. And that’s part of what’s kept the store alive. It’s been for the sake of not just myself but everybody who was ever touched by Jim being there. When he died, we definitely tried to carry on a lot of the practices that he held, the rental and loaning of gear and repairing and things like that, the things that made it really personal.”

Kesler and Strahm moved from the original location in Mission to Kansas City’s El Torreon building in 2004 and, finally, to the Crossroads, its home since 2008.

Matt told Natalie Gallagher of The Pitch, “This has been a labor of love and more of a hobby than a business, as far as definitions of business and hobby go,” Kesler tells me with a laugh. “Don’t get me wrong, it’s been a lot of fun, and I’m sad, but it’s time to move on. Honestly, I was really pushing to get to 25 years, and I’m there, and now I’ll be able to concentrate on a lot of other things.”

Matt continued, “I mean, in this location, it’s been crazy. We’ve had the First Friday events, so we’ve had a lot of entertainment here. One thing about being right here behind Crossroads KC and Grinders is that, not only am I getting the best of the local bands but I’m getting national bands that are parking their buses right out front. I’ve met a lot of rock stars and a lot of different people, whether they’re driving the buses or work-ing the stage, so that’s been great. I’ve met so many famous people without knowing it.”

A store, a performance space, a practice space, a hangout, a museum of sorts. A story is behind each instrument, stacks of amps, a drum kit , guitars on the walls. The Midwestern Musical Co. has been the practice space for local bands The Philistines, The Silver Maggies, and The Pedaljets.

The store also includes a recording studio and all the bands that have played live in the space were recorded. Matt shared some of these recordings.

11. Phil Neal & the Wornalls – “Fear The Man”

[Veteran singer songwriter, and rock and roller, Phil Neal’s early eighties band, The Artists, had a video in rotation on MTV, critical acclaim, and national management. When the band fell apart, Phil continued on, writing songs, and playing for over three decades, with several different bands, all while raising a family, and making a home, here in Kansas City. The songwriter has written dozens, of what he calls “Midwestern Rock” numbers. The Wornalls are the band Phil wanted, to bring his songs to life. Doug Gunn on drums, Danko Loftus on bass, Gary Paredes on guitar, Ben Eisiminger on keyboard, and Bruce Sidener on guitar, they are more than a band to Phil, they’re old friends.]

[Fronted by lead singer/songwriters – Patrick Deveny and Terrence Moore (American Catastrophe, The Black Water). Founding members include Felix Dukes on electric guitar, Jonathan Knecht on drums and Steve Tubbert (Zoom) on bass. Terrence joined The Silver Maggies in 2010 after performing with them that year at the Murder Ballad Ball. He brought several original songs to add to the repertoire and splits singing and songwriting duties. This spring the band added Amy Farrand (American Catastrophe, Atlantic Fadeout, EIO) on vocals and additional instrumentation, as well as Samon Rajabnik on B3 organ. Both artists performed on “My Pale Horse” and joined the band for a raucous set at the 2012 Murder Ballad Ball in Kansas City. The album was recorded over the last year by Chris Cosgrove at Black Lodge, Cosgrove Audio, WaveLab and Element Recording. Mixing was done in Tuscon, AZ at WaveLab by veteran producer/engineer Craig Schumacher (Calexico, Neko Case, DeVotchKa).]

Natalie Gallagher has been the music editor at The Pitch Weekly since Sept. 2013, when she moved to KC from her beloved Minneapolis. She loathes being asked what her favorite type of music is, because she listens to it all anyway and couldn’t possibly choose (but if you must know, her first concert was Van Morrison and the last album she purchased was Sharon Van Etten’s Are We There). In the near-year that Natalie has lived in KC, she’s eaten enough burnt-end sandwiches and drank enough Boulevard Wheat to last a lifetime.

Sonia Larbi-Aissa is working towards her undergraduate degree in International Development and Pathology at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. Originally from Paris, France, Sonia grew up in Kansas City and graduated high school in the area. She is currently spending her summer in KC interning for Natalie Gallagher at the Pitch and urban exploring.

[“Josh Berwanger made a name for himself as a member of The Anniversary, a Kansas band that released 2 albums (2000’s Designing a Nervous Breakdown & 2002’s Your Majesty) and selling over 100,000 records before imploding in a breakup of Fleetwood Mac-style proportions while attempting to tour Japan. Undeterred, Berwanger put together a new band—a country-rock outfit called The Only Children–and would go on to release 2 criminally underrated records (2004’s Change of Living & 2007’s Keeper of Youth) before pulling the plug and taking a job coaching high school basketball in Lawrence. For his 2013 release Strange Stains, Berwanger joined forces with old pal & original drummer for The Anniversary, Michael Hutcherson. “Josh & I met in 1996 while playing in local KC pop punk bands, I am honored to be making music w/ Josh. Now out of school, Jamie spent a year and a half recording the full length release of material he composed for a large ensemble of musicians. He began furiously studying the guitar at the age of 10 when he first heard Jimmy Page’s guitar solo on “Whole Lotta Love” and has considered himself a guitar geek ever since. In the late 80s and early 90s Jeff was the guitarist and co-songwriter for two of KCs favorite bands: The Mongol Beach Party and Grumpy. He studied at the Conservatory at UMKC and at the Berklee School of music in Boston. Erin has been an active performing artist in the KC arts and music scene for many years. Erin is a film, theater and commercial actress; a musician and songwriter; and one of the co-hosts of the new TV program CINEMAKC. Most notably, Erin appeared in the Emmy-winning web series THE UNREAL HOUSEWIVES OF KANSAS CITY and in the Oscar-nominated film, UP IN THE AIR alongside George Clooney.]

When 90.1FM KKFI – Kansas City Community Radio hired Bill as the Special Events Coordinator he brought some of the Spice of Life Productions events to 90.1 as fundraisers. This will be another fantastic event as always and Bill is very excited to work at 90.1 and to do his best to put on events that both benefit the community and 90.1 at the same time. 90.1 DJ’s will be MC’s for each stage.
