[Una Walkenhorst is a singer/songwriter from Kansas City, Missouri. [Originally recorded by Foolish Sad Robot and 1990s band made up of Tom Livesay and Ike Sheldon – now Eve Sheldon. On Sunday, May 20 early in the evening Eve Sheldon asked asked Facebook humans to request a song of her’s and she would record four of them on the couch and post them. She ended up recording 10 songs in an hour or so, and she write to Tim Finn that it “was a fun freakin snapshot of her singing life.” friends chose songs from Foolish Sad Robot, The Wilders, a Trouble In Mind rap. Eve wrote, that the recordings represent her “mellow vocal stylings of this century, and the VERY FIRST song she ever wrote.” (She was was14.) Eve Sheldon called out other singers to ‘get down with this…imagine some 90s cats layin’ down some of their old tunes…and new cats laying down new tunes. i wanna hear!” Eve called out: Mark Smeltzer, David Regnier, Lauren Krum, Betse Ellis, Howard Iceberg, J Ashley Miller…the list is endless…sing for us, y’all!!!!. ]

Kansas City based multi-instrumentalist and singer songwriter, Ethan Eckert joins us to share music from his new solo EP, Punishment Part One. Ethan Eckert also plays drums in the band Salty. Salty plays Voltaire, 1617 Genessee, in the West Bottoms, on Tuesday, May 29. Salty opens for The Coathangers at recordBar, on Tuesday, June 12, at 7:00 PM.

10:40 – Interview with Shaun Crowley

We first met Shaun Crowley in the band Rev Gusto. He is a classically trained guitarist, and has studied at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory. Shaun is now part of the band Momma’s Boy and is a co-founder of Manor Records, a music label that grew out of Manor Fest, the first festival sized “house show” Shaun and friends produced in their basement featuring 12 bands. Shaun is here today to shares information about the Manor Records Summer Showcase, Friday, June 8, at 10:00 pm, at Replay Lounge in Lawrence, Kansas . In addition to his work with Momma’s Boy and Manor Records, Shaun is also organizing the live music at Voltaire, 1617 Genessee, in the West Bottoms.

January 19, 2018 the 3rd and final track of Momma’s Boys’ Dead Summer Single Series was released. The song was written by Jared Bajkowski, and recorded at Element Recording Studios with Joel Nanos.

Momma’s Boy, is an Indie Surf Pop 4-piece band from KCMO, formed December 2015, and made up of former members of Rev Gusto: Peter Beatty on guitar & vocals, Shaun Crowley on guitar & vocals, Quinn Hernandez on drums, and Jared Bajkowski on bass & vocals.

Their debut EP Liquid Courage was released February 25, 2017.

Momma’s Boy play Haunted Kitchen, in Lawrence, Kansas on Friday, May 25.

Manor Records is a KC record label created by artists for artists.

Songwriter Nick Carswell is originally from Limerick, Ireland, Nick Carswell has been living in Lawrence, KS since 2011. He formed Carswell & Hope in late 2012 with Jason Slote, Austin Quick, Chris Handley, and Jordan Tucker. The band released their debut album in 2014, coinciding with a two week Irish tour. Nick also plays bass in the electro-pop band Pink Royal and is the force behind Silly Goose Records and the annual MixMaster music conference, now part of the Crossroads Music Festival. Since 2014 we have been celebrating the music of Calvin Arsenia who came home to KC after living in Edinburgh, Scotland, and has released the EPs, Moments, Prose, and last year his full length debut, Catastrophe, and a LIVE recording from Greenwood Social Hall. Calvin Arsenia was our most played artist of 2017, and his release Castatrophe was in our Top Three of WMM’s The 117 Best Recordings of 2017.

Calvin has been traveling a lot this year. He participated in Escape to Create in Seaside Florida during the month of January. He has traveled to Australia, Gothenburg Sweden, Edinburgh Scotland. Calvin has spent time in Los Angeles recording songs for a new vinyl EP that will be coming out on Bullseye Records.

On the radio show we’ve played from Calvin’s live recordings from his show last year at Greenwood Social Hall. Calvin is returning to Greenwood Social Hall, 1750 Belleview Avenue, KCMO, on Tuesday, May 29 at 7:30 PM with Mike Dillon and Mary Ocher, presented by Haymaker Records and Bullseye Records.

Mike Dillon

Mike Dillon is a percussionist, vibraphonist, bandleader, vocalist and songwriter born in San Antonio, Texas. He is a member of Critters Buggin, Les Claypool’s Fancy Band and Garage A Trois. He has performed with many musicians including Ani DiFranco, Galactic, Brave Combo, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Marco Benevento and New Orleans musicians Kevin O’Day, Johnny Vidacovich and James Singleton. Dillon also performed in the 80’s with local Dallas and Denton favorites Ten Hands. He has led Dallas-based Billy Goat, Kansas City-based Malachy Papers and Austin-based Hairy Apes BMX (HABMX).

In 2006, Dillon started a funky project “Mike Dillon’s Go-Go Jungle” which included members of Billy Goat, drummer Go-Go Ray, and bassist, J.J. Jungle. The live Go-Go Jungle also performs songs from Dillon’s prior projects. They released their second CD entitled Rock Star Bench Press in 2009.

Dillon contributed the majority of compositions to Garage A Trois’ Power Patriot CD released in 2009.

Dillon and saxophonist Skerik perform as a trio called “The Dead Kenny G’s” with alternate third members. National tours have included keyboardist Brian Haas and bassist Brad Houser. With Houser they have also toured as “Critters Buggin Trio”. They released a CD entitled Bewildered Herd in 2009. As a trio with bassist James Singleton, Dillon and Skerik have toured as “Illuminasti” and as a trio with Les Claypool they have been billed as “The Fancy Trio”.

Dillon resides in New Orleans, Louisiana, but a busy touring schedule keeps him on the road much of the time.

We have played musical releases from Mike Dillon’s Go Go Jungle and Malachy Papers multiple times on Wednesday MidDay Medley.

Recently Mike Dillon has been on tour with Rickie Lee Jones.

Simon Huntley is multi-talented. He is a lighting designer, drummer, percussionist, engineer. He works as head percussionist with Quixotic. He serves as head lighting technician at The Folly Theatre. Simon traveled with Calvin throughout Europe and the US on last year’s Outlyre tour.

Christel Highland is an Artist and Designer who has created her own line of fashion line of clothes and wearable art called Pistol Threads.  Through Christel’s work she is devolping new trade between artists and products in Morocco and Kansas City with Argon Naturals and Atlas Weavers. Christel is also an artist and Mother and she will be featured in “Paint The Town” at The Intercontinental on September 24 during the weekend of The Plaza Art Fair.

We talked with Christel about her fashion line of clothes and wearable art called Pistol Threads, being an independent artist, the Journey.

Jeff Harshbarger was voted Kansas City’s Best Bassist by The Pitch Magazine in 2007.  A Composer, bandleader, and collaborator, Jeff has recorded and performed with Bobby Watson, Forever Tango, Krystle Warren, Milt Abel, Tango Lorca, Snuff Jazz, Ghosty, Forrest Whitlow, and The People’s Liberation Big Band.  Jeff is curator pf Jeff Harshbarger Presents: An Alternative jazz Series, promoting new improvised music in Kansas City.  Jeff has received numerous grants and awards, including The Kennedy Center’s Betty Carter Fellowship, the Steans Institute fellowship, and the professional Development Grant from the Creative Capital Foundation.  Jeff also host the Wednesday edition of Jazz Afternoon, 1:00 to 3:00, on 90.1 FM.  Jeff joins us to talk about Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey’s newest release, “Race Riot Suite.”

While this is Jacob Fred’s 20th album release, this is actually Jeff’s first recording with the band, as he joined just a year ago.
