Bummer plays The Riot Room, Friday May 30, 8:00 pm with The Runaway Sons, The Sluts, and Scruffy & the Janitors. Bummer digitally released their EP – MILK, on October 23, 2013. The duo of Perrin, and drummer Thomas Williams first came together under the name Vestibule. When Williams left the band in summer 2012, bassist Mike Gustafson and Perrin found another drummer, Sam Hunter, and formed Bummer. In April, 2013, they released “Young Ben Franklin,” a three-song EP. In July, Hunter left the band and Thomas Williams came back on board. In October, they released “Milk,” a four-song EP

Bummer’s influences are in hard rock. Heavy. Raw.

Members of Bummer told Tim Finn in an Ink Magazine article from February 18, 2014, about their influences.

Mike Gustafson, 21, likes Queens of the Stone Age. “I love stuff that’s heavy & dark,” he said. “I like pop-song structures, stuff that gets stuck in your head. But it has to be heavy.”

Matt Perrin, 19, admits he had a Nirvana/Kurt Cobain dependency as a young teen but has since moved on to bands like the Melvins, Unsane, Young Widows and Pissed Jeans. “Those were all turning points,” he said. “It’s all really raw, aggressive stuff.”

Thomas Williams said initially he was more of a pop-punk fan. “I was the odd one,” he said. “I was more into Blink 182 and My Chemical Romance. But once I started hanging out with these guys, it became more Nirvana and Foo Fighters.”

2. Billy Joe Shaver – “If The Trailer’s Rockin’ Don’t Come Knockin’”
from: The Real Deal / Compadre / September 20, 2004
[18th release of 22 from Billy Joe Shaver, born August 16, 1939, in Corsicana, Texas. He is a Texas country music singer and songwriter. Shaver’s 1973 album “Old Five and Dimers Like Me” is a classic in the outlaw country genre. Upon his discharge, from the Navy he worked a series of dead-end jobs, including trying to be a rodeo cowboy. About this time, Shaver met and married Brenda Joyce Tindell. They had one son, John Edwin, known as Eddy, who was born in 1962. The two divorced and remarried several times. Shaver took a job at a lumber mill to make ends meet. One day his right hand (his dominant hand) became caught in the machinery, and he lost the better part of two fingers and contracted a serious infection. He eventually recovered, and taught himself to play the guitar without those missing fingers. Shaver set out to hitchhike to LA and ended up just outside of Memphis, Tennessee. and then Nashville, where he found a job as a songwriter for $50 a week. His work came to the attention of Waylon Jennings, who filled most of his album Honky Tonk Heroes with Shaver’s songs. Other artists, including Elvis Presley and Kris Kristofferson, began to record Shaver’s music. This led to his own record deal. After losing his wife, Brenda, and his mother to cancer in 1999, Shaver lost his son and longtime guitarist Eddy, who died at age 38 of a heroin overdose on December 31, 2000. Shaver nearly died himself the following year when he had a heart attack on stage during an Independence Day show in Texas. After successful heart surgery, Shaver came back to release Freedom’s Child in 2002. In 1999, Shaver performed at the Grand Ole Opry. In November 2005, he performed on the CMT Outlaws 2005. In 2006, Shaver was inducted in the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame. He recently served as spiritual advisor to Texas independent gubernatorial candidate Kinky Friedman. For his efforts, the Americana Music Convention awarded him their Lifetime Achievement Award in Songwriting. He currently lives in Waco, Texas. Bob Dylan mentioned Shaver in his song “I Feel a Change Comin’ On” (Bob Dylan and Robert Hunter) on the album, Together Through Life (2009) – “I’m listening to Billy Joe Shaver, And I’m reading James Joyce”. Police in Lorena, Texas, issued arrest warrants for Shaver April 2, 2007 on charges of aggravated assault and possessing a firearm in a prohibited place. This was in connection with an incident outside a tavern, Papa Joe’s Texas Saloon in Lorena on March 31, 2007, in which Shaver shot a man, Billy Bryant Coker, in the face with a handgun. Coker’s injuries were reported as not life-threatening. Witnesses interviewed by police report hearing Shaver saying “where do you want it?” and then, after the shot was fired, “Tell me you are sorry” and “No one tells me to shut up.” Coker told police the attack was unprovoked. Shaver’s attorney declared that Shaver had shot Coker “in self-defense” after Coker threatened Shaver with a knife. After unsuccessfully attempting to surrender to police in Austin, TX, who were unaware of the warrant, Shaver turned himself in at McLennan County Jail in Waco, TX on Tuesday, April 3. He was released after an hour on $50,000 bond and gave his scheduled performance at Waterloo Records in Austin that evening, where he reportedly told fans, “Don’t forget to pray for me, and tell your kids to pray for me, too.” He was acquitted in a Waco court on April 9, 2010 after testifying that he acted in self-defense. The Texas based country musician, Dale Watson, wrote a song about the incident titled “Where Do You Want It?” The song has been recorded by Whitey Morgan and the 78’s and appears on their second album, Whitey Morgan and the 78’s, on Bloodshot Records.]

10:15 – Interview with Valarie Vogel

On June 11, 2001, the Jackson County Sheriff arrested Bryon Case and charged him with the murder of Anastasia WitbolsFeugen, who had been found dead, three years earlier, on October 22, 1997. Byron Case was convicted by jury trial, on May 2, 2002 of Murder in the First Degree and of Armed Criminal Action. He received a sentence of Life in Prison Without Chance of Parole. He exhausted his last appeal in 2010, when the Supreme Court of the United States denied his petition to consider his habeas corpus appeal. Through the trials and 13 years in prison, Byron and his family, have maintained his innocence.

Valarie Vogel is originally from Pittsburgh, PA. She currently lives in LA, and works as a police dispatcher in Southern California. Valarie learned about Byron Case through a friend and began doing research in Byron Case’s Murder trial. Valarie joined us to share information about Byron’s first book, THE PARIAH’S SYNTAX, Notes From An Innocent Man, published by Red Bat Books.

Much of the case rested on the testimony of Byron Case’s ex-girlfriend Kelly Moffett who had started dating the 18 year old Case when she was still in Middle School and 14 years of age. Kelly changed her story from what she reported to the investigating Sheriff immediately after the Anastasia was found dead. Kelly ended up testifying against Byron. She received immunity for her testimony.

Byron Case the writer. Byron’s work has appeared in magazines and literary journals as well as best selling anthologies, Requiem for a Paper Bag (Fireside, 2009) and The Moment (Harper Perennial, 2012).

10:35 – Interview with Camilla Camille, Iason Mac Ai

The Kansas City based rock and roll band, The Lucky celebrates the release of their furst full length release, Swimming Invisible, with release party and show, Friday, May 23 at 9:00pm, at the recordBar, 1020 Westport Rd, Kansas City, Missouri, with NowHere, and Sextonic Plates. Joining us in the studio are two of the four members of The Lucky, Camilla Camille, and Iason Mac Ai.

Igniting a post-punk-riot explosion, The Lucky combines the intellect, sensuality, and fire-and-powder energy of Camilla Camille and Iason Mac Ai. Together they create dirty garage rock with a literary edge and a beat you can dance to.

Camille and Iason became fast friends over coffee and guitar riffs in the summer of 2011. In the heat of their collaboration, new songs took shape and old songs were reborn.

Sharing vocals, they mixed a punk and riot girl recipe for rock-n-roll. They named the band The Lucky, added a drummer and began performing shows in June 2012.

The Lucky recorded with Paul Malinowski at Massive Sound Studio and released a four-song demo in February 2013.

After going through a Spinal Tap-like procession of drummers, Dustin Mott joined the band with bassist Calandra Rene in July 2013. Camille, who previously played guitar, switched solely to vocals, adding her enthusiastic choreography to the live show.

Camille is sometimes sweet, like Kathleen Hannah, and other times primal, like Donita Sparks. Iason is reminiscent of Iggy Pop and Lou Reed, while his guitar solos weave a haunting melody of divine frosting.

Drawing on musical influences throughout the history of rock-n-roll as well as literary idols such as Lord Byron and Emily Dickinson, The Lucky forges a powerful post-punk-riot fusion that begs to be turned up a little louder.

Camilla Camille on vocals, guitar, octave pedal; Iason Mac Ai on vocals, lead guitar; Calandra Rene on bass; Dustin Mott on drums.

[Indie folk rock duo from Baltimore, Maryland, composed of Andy Stack (drums, keyboards, backup vocals) and Jenn Wasner (vocals, guitars). Their sound has been described as “earnest folk-influenced indie rock with touches of noise and dream pop”. Wasner sings lead vocals and plays electric or acoustic guitar, while Stack plays both drums and keyboards, playing the drums with his feet and right hand, and the bass line with his left hand. The band was formed as Monarch in mid-2006, before changing their name to Wye Oak, a reference to the former state tree of their home state of Maryland. 4. Glynis Johns & Harold Hastings – “Send In the Clowns”
from: The Best of Broadway: The American Musical (Remastered) / UMG / October 5, 2004
[Original 1973 Recording. “Send in the Clowns” is a song written by Stephen Sondheim for the 1973 musical A Little Night Music. Sondheim wrote the song specifically for the actress Glynis Johns, who created the role of Desirée on Broadway. The song is structured with four verses and a bridge, and uses a complex compound meter. It became Sondheim’s most popular song after Frank Sinatra recorded it in 1973 and Judy Collins’ version charted in 1975 and 1977. Subsequently, Sarah Vaughan, Judi Dench, Grace Jones, Barbra Streisand, Shirley Bassey, Zarah Leander, Tiger Lillies, Ray Conniff, Glenn Close, Cher and many other artists recorded the song and it became a jazz standard.]

10:35 – Interview with Andy Parkhurst and Lauren Braton

Spinning Tree Theatre’s production of “A Little Night Music” just opened to critical acclaim and is up and running through May 24, at the Off Center Theatre, in Crown Center, 2450 Grand, Kansas City, MO. Set in 1900 Sweden and inspired by the Ingmar Bergman film “Smiles of a Summer Night.” The “Send in the Clowns” musical, was the winner of the 1973 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical. Joining us in our 90.1 FM studios are: Lauren Braton (Countess Charlotte Malcolm in A Little Night Music) and Andy Parkhurst (Choreographer, Producer, Managing Director).

Lauren’s voice was featured on the show, last year Mark Titus was our guest and he shared a recording of lauren singing – “Holding To The Ground from (Falsettoland)” from: Take The Stage / The Unicorn Theatre 40th Anniversary Gala / August 11, 2013.

Lauren Braton plays Countess Charlotte Malcolm. This is her Spinning Tree: Debut. Her local credits: Kansas City Repertory Theatre, Coterie Theatre, Starlight Theatre, American Heartland Theatre, Unicorn Theatre, Quality Hill Playhouse, Musical Theater Heritage, Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre and Kansas City Civic Opera. Regional: Arrow Rock Lyceum Theatre, Seagle Music Colony New York. She also stays busy with commercial and film work, and teaches private voice at Kansas City Young Audiences. Up next: Jazz in the Woods at Corporate Woods in June. http://www.laurenbraton.com

From Pitch review: “Lauren Braton is exceptional as the caustic Charlotte, who relies on wry humor to mask her wounds. Braton has some of the show’s sharpest comic timing, but she’s also a rich mezzo whose range powers the stirring “Every Day a Little Death.” Vigthor Zophoniasson is imposing as Count Malcolm, and Liz Golson lends her strong voice and keen edge to Petra, a maid who attempts to seduce Fredrik’s brooding son, Henrik (played by Daniel Beeman).”

Cast: Melinda MacDonald, Charles Fugate, Lauren Braton, Molly Denninghoff, Liz Clark Golson, Cathy Wood, and Vigthor Zophoniasson.

From Pitch review: “Director Michael Grayman elevates a formidable cast to new heights with a few smart adjustments, such as shaving the five-person chorus to four. It’s the right call for this space, where subtlety and intimacy help emotions cut deep. And each performer makes a sizable impression.”

From Pitch review: “Melinda MacDonald portrays the aging Desiree with confidence, and her husky lower register has a resonance in which we can splash around. Her talent is on full display in an expressive “Send in the Clowns,” a cabaret mainstay that she makes her own.”

The orchestra, is directed by Angie Benson. Kaytee Dietrich and Andy Johnson, on reeds and French horn.

It consists of singer Yukimi Nagano (vocals, percussion) and her close high school friends Erik Bodin (drums), Fredrik Källgren Wallin (bass) and Håkan Wirenstrand (keyboards). 12. Marva Whitney – “Daddy Don’t Know About Sugar Bear” (Vinyl)
from: 45 / Forte / 1972
[Included in Eccentric Soul: The Forte Label / Numero Group – Cleanteen Records / Sept. 3, 2013. Born Marva Ann Manning, May 1, 1944 in Kansas City, Kansas. Whitney’s performing career started as early as three years old while touring with her family’s gospel group, the Manning Gospel Singers. In 1960, when she was 16, she joined a Kansas gospel group, the Alma Whitney Singers, and ended up marrying Harry Whitney, the brother-in-law of the group’s leader. Ever since, she has gone by her married name, Marva Whitney. Marva Whitney is well known as a funk vocalist. Singing with James Brown in the late 1960s, she was able to make a name for herself with powerful songs like “I’m Tired, I’m Tired, I’m Tired (Things Better Change Before Its Too Late)” and “If You Don’t Work (You Can’t Eat).” Her recording of “It’s My Thing (You Can’t Tell Me Who to Sock It To)” reached the R&B Top 20. Her song “Unwind Yourself” has been sampled numerous times, most recognisably by DJ Mark the 45 King on his 1987 track “The 900 Number”, which was then sampled by DJ Chad Jackson on his 1990 hit single “Hear the Drummer (Get Wicked)” (UK #3 in July 1990), by DJ Kool on his 1996 hit “Let Me Clear My Throat” (UK #6 in March 1997), Sway on his 2009 track Mercedes Benz and Mac Miller on his 2011 track Party On Fifth Ave. In 2006, Marva Whitney collaborated with German born DJ/collector/manager DJ Pari and Japanese funk orchestra Osaka Monaurail to produce a new single, “I Am What I Am”. Osaka Monaurail style themselves on the James Brown sound and the single was produced in the fashion of an authentic release of the recordings she produced with Brown in 1969. Two successful tours of Japan and a full length album release followed, also entitled “I Am What I Am”. In 2007, 2008 and 2009, the tour was also brought to Europe. In December 2009, Whitney collapsed on stage in front of thousands of fans in Lorne, Australia, while performing with The Transatlantics at Falls Festival. She was immediately rushed to Geelong Hospital, where doctors diagnosed a stroke. The remaining dates of her tour had to be canceled, but Whitney made a recovery and performed again in 2010. 14. PRETTY – “Mustache In Your Face” (Vinyl)
from: 7″ / Independent / 1969/1970
(never officially released until Numero reissued it in 2013)
[The Numero Group’s 700 series kicks off with three ferociously rockin’ double seven-inch dispatches from the American Midwest. Hailing from Kansas City, Pretty were more famously known as the Fabulous Four, a local beat combo that ground their way through the K.C. club scene from 1959 to 1976. In 1969, they buried themselves in a hole in a Missouri hillside, known as the Cavern Recording Studio, alongside Electric Prunes drummer Michael “Quint” Weakley. Together, they churned out eight tracks as Pretty — earthy, grooving hard rock pushed to the hilt with stuttering, psychedelic Wurlitzer work and some supremely heeeeeavy fuzzed-out electric guitar riffs. The title track, “Mustache in Your Face,” is the pick of this litter, featuring hilariously incongruous lyrics about “a girl/yeah yeah,” “the devil and the monkeys are comin’ upstairs,” and “what a lie, what a lie/mustache in your face.” Don’t bother trying to parse out the sentiments, just keep these psychedelic scorchers on rotation; all the b-sides are killers in their own rights. -Michael Stasiak (January 25, 2013) Bob Theen told Garage Hangover: “To my knowledge the record was not distributed at all. After the sessions, Weekly took off for California to try and sell them to someone. Don’t think he had any luck, and we didn’t see much of him after that.” On March 22, 2008, The Fabulous Four Band (Bob Theen – Jeff Mann – Mike Myers – Mark Higbee & original drummer Alex Love) was inducted into the Kansas Music Hall Of Fame.]

15. Dirty Projectors – “Two Doves”
from: Bitte Orca / Domino / 2009
[7th release from Brooklyn-based, experimental band, released June 9. The word “bitte” is a German word for “please,” and “orca” is another name for a killer whale. This was one of our 100 best recordings of 2009]

16. Dead Rider – “Blank Screen”
from: Chills On Glass / Drag City / 2014
[Dead Rider, formerly known as D. Rider, is an experimental rock band from Chicago, formed by 2009. It features: Todd Rittman (guitar, lead vocals), Noah Tabakin (saxophone), Andrea Faught (keyboard, trumpet), Matt Espy (drums) – who replaced former member Theo Katsaounis (drums) in 2010.]

17. Mr. Bungle – “The Air-Conditioned Nightmare”
from: California / Warner Brothers / July 2, 1999
[Experimental band from Eureka, California. The band was formed in 1985 while the members were still in high school, and was named after a children’s educational film regarding bad habits which was featured in a Pee-wee Herman HBO special in the early ’80s. Mr. Bungle released four demo tapes in the mid to late 1980s before being signed to Warner Bros. Records and releasing three full-length studio albums between 1991 and 1999. The band toured in 2000 to support their last album but in 2004 they disbanded. Although Mr. Bungle went through several line up changes early in their career, the longest-serving members were vocalist Mike Patton, guitarist Trey Spruance, bassist Trevor Dunn, saxophonist Clinton “Bär” McKinnon and drummer Danny Heifetz. Mr. Bungle was known for its distinctive musical traits, often cycling through several musical genres within the course of a single song. Many of its songs had an unconventional structure and utilized a wide array of instruments and samples. Live shows often featured members dressing up and an array of cover songs. An ongoing feud with Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis escalated in the late 1990s, with Kiedis removing Mr. Bungle from a number of large music festivals in Europe.]

Very quickly Wednesday MidDay Medley established itself as a place to hear new and local releases.

from: Tepid Peppermint Wonderland: A Retrospective / a Records / November 2, 2004
[The band began as a shoe gazing group in San Francisco in 1988. After their debut and sophomore albums, the group quickly turned to a broader style of psychedelic rock incorporating folk, blues, raga, and later, electronica influences. The name “Brian Jonestown Massacre” is a portmanteau of The Rolling Stones’ founder and guitarist Brian Jones and the infamous mass cult suicide in Jonestown, Guyana. They have gained media notoriety for their tumultuous working relationships and the drug addiction of their leader, Anton Newcombe. Originally released on “Take It from the Man!” from 1996 their third album. It was the first of three critically acclaimed albums, preceding Their Satanic Majesties’ Second Request and Thank God for Mental Illness. It was another change of style for the band, with a large influence being 1960s garage rock, particularly the early work of The Rolling Stones.]

14. Fela Ransome Kuti –“Open & Close”
from: Open & Close / Independent / Originally released January 1, 1971
[Review by John Dougan: Another long-thought-lost gem from the Fela Anikulapo Kuti archives, Open & Close was originally released in 1971 and, in the manner of He Miss Road and Fela’s London Scene, is a total groove-fest loaded to the gills with raucous horn blowing, ferocious percussion (once again, Tony Allen take a bow), and song lengths over ten minutes. By this point, Fela could do no wrong when it came to recording; Afro-beat dissenters will claim that there is a trance-inducing similarity to much of Fela’s ’70s recorded output, that the grooves aren’t enough to make the songs distinctive enough on their own. That’s true of some of his later recordings (like in the mid- to late ’80s), but at this point he was still breathing fire and the band was in top form. Perhaps the distinguishing factors of records like Open & Close and some of Fela’s other ’70s releases are that as much as he liked to ride a groove, he also liked to disrupt it, twist it and turn it, reshape it, only to bring it back to its original shape. There was less of that later in his career.]

18. Sister Gertrude Morgan – “Let Us Make A Record”
from: Lets Make A Record / Ropeadope / June 27, 2004
[Sister Gertrude Morgan (1900-1980) was a preacher, missionary, artist, musician, and poet who worked in New Orleans in the 1960s and ’70s, notable primarily for her folk art. She was born in 1900 in Lafayette, Alabama, and moved to Columbus, Georgia at the age of eighteen. She was married to Will Morgan in 1928, but at the age of 38 thought she heard a voice from God telling her to become a street evangelist. She left her family and husband to move to New Orleans, where she organized an orphanage with two other missionaries. She believed God told her to begin painting in 1956, and in 1957 thought she heard a voice telling her that she was the Bride of Christ. Thus she adopted a white habit and moved out of the orphanage to establish “The Everlasting Gospel Mission” in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Music was one of the tools of her ministry, and in the early 1970s, Let’s Make A Record was recorded in order to capture Morgan singing and playing her tambourine. She painted in order to create visual aids for her preaching, and her paintings use a colorful religious iconography. Some of her favorite subjects are the Book of Revelation and her and Jesus flying in an airplane, this last accompanied by the poem “Jesus is my air Plane.” She painted on whatever was at hand, including styrofoam trays, window shades and even toilet paper rolls. Her art brought her fame and notoriety, and in 1974 she announced that the Lord had ordered her to cease painting in order to concentrate on her preaching and poetry. She died in 1980. In 2005, the New Orleans Museum of Art presented the first comprehensive collection of her art. Also in 2005, the Ropeadope label released King Britt presents Sister Gertrude Morgan, which took the a cappella/tambourine recordings of Let’s Make A Record and added contemporary beat programming and instrumentation. The album received rave reviews and created a new, young audience for Sister Gertrude Morgan. The album artwork featured her paintings.]

20. Nina Simone -“I Can’t See Nobody (Daniel Y. Remix)”
from: Remixed & Reimagined / BMG / October 31, 2006
[The first album in the Legacy Remixed series released by Sony BMG. This is a collection of songs by Nina Simone, remixed by several club DJ’s. All original songs come from her albums released by RCA records. Born Eunice Kathleen Waymon; February 21, 1933 – April 21, 2003) was an American singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger, and civil rights activist widely associated with jazz music. Simone aspired to become a classical pianist while working in a broad range of styles including classical, jazz, blues, folk, R&B, gospel, and pop. Born the sixth child of a preacher’s family in North Carolina, Simone aspired to be a concert pianist. Her musical path changed direction after she was denied a scholarship to the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, despite a well-received audition. Simone was later told by someone working at Curtis that she was rejected because she was black. When she began playing in a small club in Philadelphia to fund her continuing musical education and become a classical pianist she was required to sing as well. She was approached for a recording by Bethlehem Records, and her rendering of “I Loves You, Porgy” was a hit in the United States in 1958. Over the length of her career Simone recorded more than 40 albums, mostly between 1958—when she made her debut with Little Girl Blue—and 1974. Her musical style arose from a fusion of gospel and pop songs with classical music, in particular with influences from her first inspiration, Johann Sebastian Bach, and accompanied with her expressive jazz-like singing in her characteristic contralto. She injected as much of her classical background into her music as possible to give it more depth and quality, as she felt that pop music was inferior to classical. Her intuitive grasp on the audience–performer relationship was gained from a unique background of playing piano accompaniment for church revivals and sermons regularly from the early age of six years old. In the early 1960s, she became involved in the civil rights movement and the direction of her life shifted once again. Simone’s music was highly influential in the fight for equal rights in the United States. In later years, she lived abroad, finally settling in France in 1992. She received a Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 2000 and was a fifteen-time Grammy Award nominee over the course of her career.]
